Brethren, be not children in your understanding; but in malice be babes, and in your understanding become perfect.
36:2
Fittingly, after the great array of arguments and the demonstration, he uses more vehement language and much rebuke, and mentions an example suited to the matter in hand.
36:3
For children indeed gape and are thrilled at small things, but for exceedingly great things they have not so much wonder.
36:4
既然這些人也因擁有方言的恩賜,就以為自己擁有了一切,其實方言在眾恩賜中乃是最末的,因此他說:「不要作小孩子」——就是說,在該有智慧之處不要無知,倒要在有不義之處、有虛榮之處、有自高之處作嬰孩、作純樸的人;
Since therefore these men too, having the gift of tongues, thought they possessed the whole, whereas this was the least of the others, for this reason he says, Be not children—that is, be not without understanding where one ought to be sagacious, but there be babes and simple where there is injustice, where there is vainglory, where there is arrogance;
36:5
for he who is a babe in malice must also be prudent.
36:6
For just as prudence with knavery would not be prudence, so also simplicity with folly would not be simplicity.
36:7
For in simplicity one must flee folly also, and in prudence wickedness.
36:8
For just as neither bitter medicines beyond what is needful, nor sweet ones, do good, so neither does simplicity by itself, nor prudence.
36:9
Wherefore Christ, bidding us blend the two together, said, Be prudent as the serpents, and guileless as the doves.
36:10
然而在惡事上作嬰孩是什麼意思呢?就是連惡事究竟是什麼都不曉得;
But what is it to be a babe in malice? Not even to know what malice ever is;
36:11
for such he wished them to be.
36:12
Wherefore also he said, It is actually reported that there is fornication among you.
36:13
He did not say, It is dared, but, It is reported.
36:14
For you know the matter thoroughly, he says.
36:15
For indeed he wished them to be both men and children, but the one in malice, the other in prudence.
36:16
For in this way a man would become a man, if he were also a child; that is, a child in respect of wickedness.
36:17
But so long as he is not a child in respect of wickedness, neither will he be a man.
36:18
For the evildoer will not be perfect, but foolish.
36:19
'For in the law it is written: With men of other tongues and with other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.'
36:20
And yet nowhere in the Law is this written; but, as I said before, he always calls the whole of the Old Testament 'the Law,' together with the Prophets and the historical books.
36:21
He brings forward the testimony from the prophet Isaiah, again cutting short the
36:22
恩賜的榮耀,為使他們得益處;
glory of the gift, for the sake of their profit;
36:23
yet nevertheless even so he sets it down with a word of commendation.
36:24
因為「雖然如此,他們還是不」這句話,是要顯明這神蹟本足以使他們驚駭;
For the phrase 'and yet for all that not' was meant to show that the wonder was sufficient to astound them;
36:25
but if they were not persuaded, the blame is theirs.
36:26
And for what reason did God do this, if they were not going to be persuaded? That He might everywhere be seen doing His own part.
36:27
Having therefore shown from the prophecy also that the sign was not very useful, he added:
36:28
'Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not;'
36:29
'but prophesying is not for them that believe not, but for them that believe.'
36:30
'If therefore the whole Church be assembled together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in the unlearned or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? But if all prophesy, and there come in some unbeliever or unlearned, he is convicted by all, he is judged by all;'
36:31
'and thus the secrets of his heart are made manifest, and so falling down on his face he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed among you.'
36:32
Here one may see great perplexity arising out of what has been said.
36:33
For if tongues are a sign to the unbelievers, how does he say, 'If the unbelievers see you speaking with tongues, they will say that ye are mad'? And if prophecy is not for the unbelievers, but for them that believe, how will the unbelievers also gain profit from it? For 'if there come in,' he says, 'an unbeliever while ye are prophesying, he is convicted by all, and is judged.'
36:34
不但如此,繼這疑難之後,又有第二個不同的疑問從此生出;
And not this only, but after this a second, different inquiry springs up from here;
36:35
for the tongue will appear once more to be greater than prophecy.
36:36
For if tongues are for a sign to the unbelievers, but prophecy for the believers, then that which draws in and appropriates the strangers is greater than that which orders the members of the household.
36:37
What then is the meaning of what has been said? There is nothing difficult, nor obscure, nor contrary to what went before, but even very consistent, if we attend.
36:38
For prophecy is suitable for both, but the tongue is no longer so.
36:39
Wherefore, having said concerning the tongue, 'It is for a sign,' he added, 'Not to them that believe, but to them that believe not'; and to these for a sign, that is, for astonishment, not so much for instruction.
36:40
But concerning prophecy also, he says, he did this same thing, when he said, 'But prophecy is not for them that believe not, but for them that believe.'
36:41
For neither has the believer need to see a sign, but only needs teaching and instruction.
36:42
'How then,' one may say, 'do you say that prophecy is useful to both, when he himself says, Not for them that believe not, but for them that believe?' If you examine accurately, you will understand what is said.
36:43
For neither did he say that prophecy is not useful to the unbelievers, but, 'It is not for a sign,' as the tongue is—useless, that is to say.
36:44
方言對不信的人也毫無用處;
Nor is the tongue in any way useful to the unbelievers;
36:45
for it has but one work, only to astound and to throw into commotion.
36:46
因為「證據」乃屬於中性之物;
For the sign belongs to the class of things intermediate;
36:47
正如經上說:『求你向我顯出恩待的憑據』,並加上『使我得好處』;
as when it says, 'Work with me a sign,' and adds, 'for good';
36:48
and again, 'I am become as it were a wonder unto many,' that is, for a sign.
36:49
And that you may learn that he introduced the sign here not as something altogether useful, he added what results from it.
36:50
And what was this? 'They will say,' he says, 'that ye are mad.'
36:51
But this is not owing to the nature of the sign, but to the folly of those men.
36:52
And when you hear of 'unbelievers,' do not suppose that the same persons are everywhere meant, but sometimes those who are sick with an incurable disease and remain past correction, and sometimes those who are able even to be changed—such as, in the days of the apostles, were those who marveled at the mighty works of God that were spoken.
36:53
This then is what he means:
36:54
就是先知講道在不信的人中間和在信的人中間都有功效;
that prophecy has power both among the unbelievers and among the believers;
36:55
but as for the tongue, the unbelievers and the foolish, when they hear it, not only gain nothing, but even mock those who utter it, as though they were mad.
36:56
因為對他們而言,它不過是作證據而已;
For indeed to them it is for a sign only;
36:57
that is, merely for being astonished.
36:58
But those at least who had understanding actually gained profit, for the purpose for which the sign was given.
36:59
因為那時不單有指控他們醉酒的人,也有許多人希奇他們,當他們是述說神大作為的人;
For it was not only those who accused them of drunkenness that were present then, but many also marveled at them, as men declaring the mighty works of God;
36:60
so that those who laughed were the foolish ones.
36:61
Wherefore Paul also did not simply say, 'They will say that ye are mad,' but added, 'the unlearned and unbelievers.'
36:62
But prophecy is not for a sign simply, but is also suitable and useful to both, unto faith and unto profit.
36:63
And this, even if not at once, yet through what follows he explained more clearly, saying:
36:64
'For if all prophesy,' he says, 'and there come in some unbeliever or unlearned, he is convicted by all, he is judged by all, and thus the secrets of his heart are made manifest, and so falling down on his face he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed among you.'
36:65
So that prophecy is greater not in this respect only, that it has power among both, but also in that it draws in the more shameless of the unbelievers.
36:66
因為彼得責備撒非喇的時候所行的奇事——那是先知講道之事——與他說方言的時候並不相同;
For the wonder was not the same when Peter convicted Sapphira—which was a matter of prophecy—and when he spoke with tongues;
36:67
but in the former case all were abashed, whereas when he spoke with tongues he received even the reputation of a raving man.
36:68
Having therefore said that the tongue did not profit, and having again cut short this very point by turning the blame upon the Jews, as he proceeds he shows that it even does harm.
36:69
或有人說:『那麼它是為甚麼賜下的呢?』是為叫它伴著翻方言而發出;
'And for what purpose,' one may say, 'was it given?' That it might go forth with interpretation;
36:70
seeing that without this, the very opposite result comes about among the foolish.
36:71
'For if,' he says, 'all speak with tongues, and there come in unbelievers or unlearned, they will say that ye are mad;'
36:72
正如使徒也曾被人疑為醉酒一樣;
just as the apostles too incurred the suspicion of being drunken;
36:73
'For these men,' it says, 'are full of new wine.'
36:74
But this was no accusation against the sign, but against the ignorance of those men.
36:75
For this reason he added, 'the unlearned and unbelievers,' so that the supposition might be that of their inexperience and unbelief.
36:76
For, as I said before, it is not among the things reproached, but among those not very profitable, that he is eager to rank the gift, and this in order to restrain them and to bring them to the necessity of seeking one to interpret.
36:77
For since the many looked not to this, but employed it for display and self-aggrandizement, from this consideration especially he leads them away, showing that they are damaged in respect of reputation, incurring the suspicion of madness.
36:78
And this is especially what Paul is continually attempting to establish, whenever he wishes to lead someone away from anything: he shows him to be injured in the very things which he desires.
36:79
所以你也當這樣行;
And do thou also therefore act in this way;
36:80
你若要把人從宴樂中引開,就當指明那事乃是苦的;
if you would lead a man away from pleasure, show that the thing is bitter;
36:81
if you would draw him away from vainglory, show that the thing is full of dishonor.
36:82
For indeed, when withdrawing the rich from the love of money, he did not say only that wealth is harmful, but that it also casts men into temptations.
36:83
'For they that will be rich,' he says, 'fall into temptation.'
36:84
For since it seems to deliver from temptations, he attached to it the very opposite of what the rich supposed.
36:85
另有些人又緊緊持守那從外邦而來的智慧,彷彿藉此可以堅立教義;
Again, others held fast to the wisdom that is from without, as though establishing the doctrine thereby;
36:86
He showed that circumcision not only gives no aid to the cross, but actually empties it of its power.
36:87
They insisted on being judged before outsiders, thinking it beneath them to be judged among their own people, as though those outside were the wiser.
36:88
He demonstrates that to be judged before outsiders is a shameful thing.
36:89
They clung to eating things sacrificed to idols, as though displaying a perfect knowledge.
36:90
He showed that this very thing belongs to an imperfect knowledge, namely, not knowing how to have regard for the affairs of one's neighbours.
36:91
So too here: since they were beside themselves over this gift of tongues, being enamoured of glory, he shows that this is precisely what most puts them to shame, not only depriving them of glory, but also enveloping them in the suspicion of madness.
36:92
Yet he did not say this at once, but only after saying countless things beforehand; when he had made his argument readily acceptable, then he introduces what is exceedingly paradoxical.
36:93
And this very principle is a customary one.
36:94
因為凡要動搖一個根深蒂固的成見,並將它扭轉成相反之見的人,不可一開始就直說相反的話;
For one who is about to overthrow a firmly fixed opinion and turn it into its opposite must not straightway state the contrary;
36:95
for he will be laughed to scorn by those already preoccupied by the opposite verdict.
36:96
Since what is exceedingly paradoxical could not become acceptable from the very outset, one must first undermine the ground well by other means, and only then turn the matter into its opposite.
36:97
This, at any rate, is exactly what he did when discoursing about marriage.
36:98
For since many were attached to the practice as being a relaxation, while he himself wished to show that not marrying is the true relaxation, had he said this at once he would not have made it so acceptable.
36:99
他使這話容易被人接受;
he made it readily acceptable;
36:100
but now, having placed it after many other things, and introducing it at the fitting moment, he made a deep impression upon his hearers.
36:101
This he did also in the matter of virginity.
36:102
For indeed, after saying much beforehand, and again afterward, then he says, 'I spare you,' and, 'I want you to be free from care.'
36:103
This very thing he does also concerning tongues, showing that it not only deprives of glory, but even puts to shame those who possess it in the presence of unbelievers.
36:104
But prophecy, on the contrary, is both free from the shame that comes from unbelievers, and possesses the greatest glory and benefit.
36:105
For no one will say concerning prophecy, 'They are mad,' nor will he laugh at those who prophesy; but on the contrary he will be astounded and marvel at them.
36:106
因為他被眾人所勸戒;
For he is convicted by all;
36:107
that is to say, the things he holds in his heart are brought out into the open and made manifest to all.
36:108
然而進來時看見一個人說波斯話、另一個人說敘利亞話,與進來時聽見自己心思中隱密之事被說出來——並被說明他究竟是懷著試探與惡意而來,還是心懷純正而來——這兩者絕不相同;
But it is not the same thing to see, upon entering, one man speaking in Persian and another in Syriac, and, upon entering, to hear the hidden secrets of one's own mind, and whether one has come in to tempt and with an evil purpose, or in soundness of heart;
36:109
以及指明他行過這事那事,又存過這樣那樣的心念;
and that this or that has been done by him, and this has been purposed;
36:110
for this is far more awe-inspiring and more profitable than the other.
36:111
故此,論到方言他便說:「你們是癲狂了」;
For this reason, then, concerning tongues he says, 'You are mad;'
36:112
然而他並非憑自己斷定這話,乃是根據那些人的判斷;
yet he does not pronounce this on his own authority, but from their judgement;
36:113
'For they will say,' he says, 'that you are mad.'
36:114
But here he has made use both of the verdict of the facts themselves and of that of those who are benefited.
36:115
'For he is convicted,' he says, 'by all, he is examined by all,' and thus the secret things of his heart become manifest, and thus, falling upon his face, he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed among you.
36:116
你看見這是無可爭辯的嗎?因為在方言的事上,所發生的乃是可疑的,人或許會控告不信之人是癲狂;
Do you see that this is beyond dispute? For there the thing that takes place is doubtful, and one might charge the unbelievers with madness;
36:117
but here there will be nothing of the sort, but he will both marvel and worship, confessing first by his deeds, then also by his words.
36:118
Thus also Nebuchadnezzar worshipped God, saying, 'Of a truth your God, he is a God who reveals mysteries, seeing you were able to reveal this mystery.'
36:119
你看見申言的能力,怎樣改變了那兇暴的人,教化了他,領他歸入信仰嗎?弟兄們,這卻怎麼樣呢?你們聚集的時候,各人或有詩歌,或有教訓,或有方言,或有啟示,或有繙譯;
Did you see the power of prophecy, how it transformed that savage man, and instructed him, and led him to faith? What then is it, brethren? When you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation;
36:120
let all things be done for edification.
36:121
Do you see the foundation and the rule of Christianity? For as it is the builder's work to build, so also it is the Christian's work to profit his neighbours in all things.
36:122
然而他既如此嚴厲地貶抑了這恩賜,唯恐它顯得多餘無用;
But since he had run down the gift very severely, lest it should seem superfluous;
36:123
因為他一心要挫下他們的驕傲,才這樣行;
for wishing to pull down their conceit, he did this alone;
36:124
again he numbers it together with the others, saying:
36:125
He has a psalm, he has a teaching, he has a tongue.
36:126
因為古時他們憑恩賜作詩歌,也憑恩賜施教訓;
For indeed in olden times they composed psalms from a spiritual gift, and taught from a spiritual gift;
36:127
然而他說,這一切總要著眼於一件事,就是鄰舍的匡正;
yet nevertheless let all these things, he says, look to one end, the correction of one's neighbour;
36:128
因為你若不是為造就弟兄而來,又何必來呢?我實在不甚措意於各恩賜之間的分別;
For if you do not come in order to build up your brother, why do you even come? Truly I have no great concern for the difference among the gifts;
36:129
one thing alone concerns me, and my sole earnest endeavour is one, to do all things for edification.
36:130
Thus even he who has the small gift will outrun him who has the great one, if this be added to it.
36:131
因為眾恩賜之所以存在,正是為叫各人得造就;
For it is on this account that the gifts also exist, that each may be built up;
36:132
since, if this does not come about, the gift will even turn to condemnation for the one who received it.
36:133
For what, tell me, is the profit of prophesying? and what the profit of raising the dead, when no one is the gainer thereby? But if this is the end of the gifts, and it is possible to accomplish it also in another way, apart from gifts, do not be highly minded over the signs, nor bewail yourself, O you who are bereft of the gifts.
36:134
If any man speaks in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and in turn, and let one interpret.
36:135
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God.
36:136
你既論到方言說了這許多,說它無益,說它若無繙譯之人便屬多餘,如今卻又吩咐我們說方言麼?他說,我並不吩咐,卻也不禁止;
Having said so much about tongues, that it is unprofitable, that it is superfluous unless one have an interpreter, do you again bid us speak in tongues? I do not bid it, he says, but neither do I forbid it;
36:137
just as when he says, 'If any of the unbelievers invites you, and you are willing to go,' he does not
36:138
立法命人去,卻也不加攔阻;
lay it down as a law to go, but neither does he hold one back;
36:139
so also here: 'Let him speak to himself and to God.'
36:140
If he cannot bear to keep silence, he says, but is so ambitious and vainglorious, let him utter it by himself.
36:141
So that by this very permission granted in such a manner he restrained him, putting him to shame.
36:142
This he does also elsewhere, when discoursing about intercourse with a wife, and saying:
36:143
But this I say because of your incontinence.
36:144
But when he was speaking about prophecy, he did not speak thus; but how? In a commanding and legislative manner:
36:145
Let the prophets speak, two or three.
36:146
And nowhere here does he seek the interpreter, nor does he stop the mouth of the one who prophesies, as there when he says, 'If there be no interpreter, let him keep silence.'
36:147
For neither is he who speaks with a tongue self-sufficient.
36:148
所以,人若兼有這兩樣恩賜,就讓他說;
Wherefore, if any man has both gifts, let him speak;
36:149
but if he has them not, yet wishes to speak, let him do this together with the interpreter.
36:150
For indeed the prophet also is an interpreter, but of God, whereas you are the interpreter of a man.
36:151
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence.
36:152
For nothing ought to be done superfluously, nor for the sake of vainglory.
36:153
只對自己和神說;
But let him speak to himself and to God;
36:154
that is, in his mind, or quietly and without noise, if indeed he wishes.
36:155
For this is not the language of one laying down a law, but rather perhaps of one who by his very permission puts to shame the more, just as when he says, 'But if any man is hungry, let him eat at home.'
36:156
And though he seems to grant them concession, by this very thing he lays hold of him the more sharply.
36:157
'For you do not come together for this,' he says, 'to show that you possess a gift, but that you may edify those who hear.'
36:158
This is just what he said at the outset: 'Let all things be done unto edification.'
36:159
'Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the others discern.'
36:160
Nowhere did he add 'at the most,' as he did in the case of the tongues.
36:161
And what does this mean? For does he not show prophecy also to be insufficient, seeing that he entrusts the judgment of it to others?
36:162
其實不然,先知講道乃是極其自足的;
Nay, it is exceedingly sufficient;
36:163
因為他並不像對那說方言的人那樣,在沒有翻譯的人時堵住先知的口;
for he did not muzzle him, as he did the other, when there was no interpreter present;
36:164
nor did he say concerning this one, as he said concerning that one, 'If there be no interpreter, let him keep silence,' so also here, 'If there be none to discern, let him not prophesy,' but he only secured the hearer.
36:165
For with a view to the full assurance of the hearers he has said this, that no soothsayer might slip in among them.
36:166
For this too he commanded them from the beginning to guard against, when he introduced the distinction between soothsaying and prophecy; and now he bids them discern this very thing and take heed, lest anything diabolical creep in unawares.
36:167
'But if anything be revealed to another sitting by, let the first keep silence.'
36:168
'For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be exhorted.'
36:169
What then is this that is said? 'If, while you are prophesying and speaking,' he says, 'the spirit of the other should rouse him, be silent thereafter.'
36:170
他論到方言所說的,在此處也照樣要求,就是輪流而說;不過此處的事更為神聖;
For what he said concerning the tongues, this also he requires here, namely the taking of turns; but the matters here are more divine;
36:171
for he did not say 'in turn,' but 'if anything be revealed to another.'
36:172
For what then ought to be done, when this one is moved to prophecy—should that one keep on speaking? But ought both to speak? Nay, that were absurd, and full of confusion.
36:173
But the former, then? Nay, this too were absurd.
36:174
For on this account, while that one was speaking, the Spirit moved this one, that he too might say somewhat.
36:175
Then, consoling the one who was silenced, he says:
36:176
'For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be exhorted.'
36:177
Do you see how again he sets down the reason for which he does all things? For if he altogether forbids the one who speaks in tongues to speak, whenever he has no interpreter, because of its unprofitableness, with good reason he also bids prophecy to be restrained, if it lacks this, but produces confusion and disturbance and untimely tumult.
36:178
'And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.'
36:179
你看見他如何有力而可畏地叫那人自覺羞愧麼?為要免得那人好爭辯、起紛爭,他就顯明那恩賜本身乃是順服的;
Do you see how vigorously and awfully he abashed him? For lest the man be contentious, or make a faction, he shows that the very gift is in subjection;
36:180
for by 'spirit' here he means the operation of the gift.
36:181
But if the spirit is in subjection, much more would you who possess it have no right to be contentious.
36:182
Then he shows that this also is well-pleasing to God, adding and saying:
36:183
'For God is not a God of confusion, but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints I teach.'
36:184
Do you see by how many arguments he led him to silence, and consoled the one who gives place to the other? By one indeed, and
36:185
藉著這一點:這樣行對他並無損失;
the first, that no harm comes to him from this happening;
36:186
他說:「因為你們都可以一個一個地作先知講道」;
'For you can,' he says, 'all prophesy one by one';
36:187
第二,藉著這一點:這也是聖靈所喜悅的;
and by another, that this is also well-pleasing to the Spirit;
36:188
「因為先知的靈原是順服先知的」;
'For the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets';
36:189
此外,藉著這一點:這乃是照著神的旨意;
and besides these, that this is according to the will of God;
36:190
他說:「因為神不是叫人混亂的神,乃是叫人和睦的神」;
'For God,' he says, 'is not a God of confusion, but of peace';
36:191
and fourthly, that this law prevails everywhere throughout the world, and that nothing strange is being enjoined upon them.
36:192
'For thus,' he says, 'in all the churches of the saints I teach.'
36:193
What then could be more awe-inspiring than these things? For the Church then was a heaven, the Spirit ordering all things, and moving each of those who presided, and making them inspired.
36:194
But now we retain only the symbols of those gifts.
36:195
因為即使如今,我們也是兩三個人說話,並且是輪流的,一人靜默,另一人便起頭;
For even now we speak two or three, and in turn, and while one is silent another begins;
36:196
but these are only signs and memorials of those things.
36:197
Wherefore, when we begin to speak, the people respond, 'And with your spirit,' showing that of old they spoke thus, not by their own wisdom, but moved by the Spirit.
36:198
但如今教會好像一個婦人,從先前的興盛中跌落下來,在許多事上只保留著昔日那繁榮的表號,雖然仍展示著她盛金子的匣子和箱籠,那財富卻已被奪去了;
But the Church now seems like a woman who has fallen from her former prosperity, and who in many respects retains only the symbols of that ancient well-being, displaying indeed the caskets and coffers of her gold, but robbed of the wealth itself;
36:199
to such a one is the Church now like.
36:200
我說這話並不是單為著恩賜的緣故;
And I say this not on account of the gifts;
36:201
因為倘若所失去的僅止於此,那還算不得什麼可怕的事;
for it were no dreadful thing, if this were the only loss;
36:202
因為那時寡婦的數目和童女的班次,曾是眾教會極大的裝飾;
For the number of the widows and the choir of the virgins then possessed a great adornment for the churches;
36:203
but now it is made desolate and emptied, and only the symbols remain.
36:204
For there are widows even now, there are also virgins, but these do not possess that adornment which those who have stripped themselves for such wrestlings ought to have.
36:205
因為童女特出的記號,乃是專一顧念神的事,並殷勤事奉主而不分心;
For the distinguishing mark of the virgin is to care for the things of God alone, and to wait upon Him without distraction;
36:206
and of the widow, the proof would not be so much her not contracting a second marriage, as those other things: the deeds of hospitality, of love for the poor, of steadfast endurance in prayers, and all the rest which Paul requires with great strictness, writing to Timothy.
36:207
One might see even those in wedlock displaying much decorum among us.
36:208
But this is not the only thing sought, but rather the diligent ministering to those in need, whereby the women of old shone forth most, not as many of those now.
36:209
因為那時她們不以金子為裝飾,乃以出於施捨的美飾為妝;
For then, instead of gold, they wore about them the adornment that comes from almsgiving;
36:210
but now, having let this go, they are girt about on every side with golden cords woven from the chain of their sins.
36:211
我還要再說一個空了、失去祖傳裝飾的匣子麼?古時眾人都聚在一起,同聲應和歌唱詩篇;
Shall I tell of yet another coffer emptied of its ancestral ornament? Of old all came together, and chanted the psalms in common;
36:212
那時眾人中間乃是一心一意;
but then among all there was one soul and one heart;
36:213
but now not even in one soul might a man see that concord, but great is the warfare everywhere.
36:214
如今主持教會的人,也仍向眾人祝願平安,如同進入祖傳的家一般;
Peace even now the president of the Church prays upon all, as one entering into an ancestral home;
36:215
but of this peace the name is much, yet the reality is nowhere to be found.
36:216
那時連家庭也都是教會;
Then even the houses were churches;
36:217
but now the church has become a house, or rather even worse than any house.
36:218
因為在一個家裡,人能看見許多良好的秩序;
For in a house one may see much good order;
36:219
for the mistress of the house sits upon her seat with all seemliness, and the maidservants weave in quietness, and each of the household servants has in hand the task appointed him.
36:220
但在這裡卻是大有喧嚷、大有混亂,我們的聚會與酒館毫無分別;
But here there is much tumult, much confusion, and our assemblies differ in nothing from a tavern;
36:221
so great is the laughter, so great the disturbance, as in the baths, as in the markets, with all shouting and making an uproar.
36:222
whereas in other cases it is not even lawful to greet one's neighbor in the church, even should one recover a friend long absent, but these things are done outside, and very fittingly so.
36:223
For the church is not a barber's shop, nor a perfumer's shop, nor any other workshop of those in the marketplace, but a place of angels, a place of archangels, the kingdom of God, heaven itself.
36:224
所以,若有人分開了天,把你領進那裡,即使你看見了你的父親、你的弟兄,你也必不敢開口說話;
If therefore one, having parted the heaven, led you in there, even if you saw your father, even your brother, you would not dare to speak;
36:225
so neither here ought anything else to be spoken, save the things that are spiritual.
36:226
For indeed the things here are heaven itself.
36:227
但你若不信,就望一望這裡的聖桌,回想它為誰而設,又是為了甚麼緣故;
But if you disbelieve, look toward this Table here; call to mind for whose sake it stands, and for what purpose;
36:228
consider who it is that comes forth here, and shudder even before the appointed moment.
36:229
For indeed, when a man sees merely the throne of a king, he rises up in his soul, expecting the king's coming forth.
36:230
You too, therefore, even before that awesome moment, shudder at it; rouse yourself, and before you see the veils drawn back and the choir of angels advancing, ascend up to heaven itself.
36:231
但未領受奧秘之人卻不明白這些事;
But the uninitiated is ignorant of these things;
36:232
it is necessary, then, to say other things to him as well.
36:233
For with regard to him too we shall not be at a loss for arguments able to rouse him up and to persuade him to take wing.
36:234
You, then, who are ignorant of these things, when you hear the prophet saying, 'Thus says the Lord,'
36:235
depart from the earth, ascend, you also, into heaven; consider who it is that through him is speaking to you.
36:236
然而如今,當一個丑角在耍寶,或一個淫婦在行不知羞恥之事時,這麼大的一群觀眾卻安靜地坐著,對台上所講的極其肅靜——而且並沒有人吩咐他們閉口——既無喧嘩,也無叫喊,連一點兒嘈雜聲都沒有;
But as it is, when a buffoon plays the fool, or a harlot woman behaves shamelessly, so great a crowd sits and offers deep silence to what is being said—and this though no one bids them be quiet—and there is neither uproar nor shouting nor the least murmur;
36:237
but when God is speaking from the heavens about such awesome matters, we are more shameless than dogs, not offering to God even as much reverence as we show to harlot women.
36:238
Did you shudder to hear these things? Then all the more shudder for doing them.
36:239
What Paul said concerning those who despise the poor and who feast alone—
36:240
'What, do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God, and put to shame those who have nothing?'—grant me too to say the like concerning those who make a disturbance and chatter here;
36:241
「難道你們沒有房屋可以閒談嗎?還是你們藐視神的教會,甚至敗壞那些願意謹守安靜的人呢?」「可是與熟人交談,對我們是甘甜可愛的事。」我並不禁止這事,但讓它在家中、在市場上、在澡堂裡進行;
'What, do you not have houses to prattle in? Or do you despise the church of God, and corrupt even those who wish to be sober and quiet?' 'But it is sweet and dear to us to converse with our acquaintances.' I do not forbid this, but let it take place in the house, in the marketplace, in the baths;
36:242
for the church is a place not of conversation but of teaching.
36:243
然而如今,它與市場毫無分別;
But as it is now, it differs in nothing from the marketplace;
36:244
而且,若說得不算太放肆的話,或許連戲台也不如;
and, if it be not too bold to say, perhaps not even from the stage;
36:245
so much more wantonly do the women who gather here deck themselves out than the harlot women there.
36:246
因此她們也把許多放縱之徒引到這裡來;
Wherefore indeed they draw here many also of the licentious;
36:247
and if anyone should attempt or wish to corrupt a woman, no place, I think, seems to him more suitable for it than the church.
36:248
And if it be needful to buy or sell anything, the church appears more serviceable than the marketplace.
36:249
For here more discussions arise even about these matters than in the very workshops themselves.
36:250
若有人想要毀謗人並聽人毀謗,你也要看見這事在這裡發生,更甚於在外面的市場;
And if some wish to speak ill and to hear ill of others, this too you will see happening here rather than out in the marketplace;
36:251
你若想聽聞任何政事,或家中之事,或軍營中之事,不必上法庭,也不必坐在醫館裡;
and if you wish to hear anything of civic affairs, or of what happens in households, or of what happens in the army, do not go to the law court, nor sit in the physician's surgery;
36:252
for here they are, here are those who announce all these things more precisely than anyone—and everything here is anything rather than a church.
36:253
或許我責備你們太過嚴厲了;
Perhaps I have rebuked you very sharply;
36:254
for when you persist in the same things, how shall I know that what has been said has taken hold of you? It is necessary, then, to take up the same matters again.
36:255
那麼,這些事還可容忍嗎?還受得了嗎?我們天天勞碎、被撕裂,為要叫你們學得些有益的事而回去;
Are these things, then, bearable? Are they to be endured? We are worn down and torn apart every single day, that you may go away having learned something useful;
36:256
and not one of you goes away having gained anything, but rather having been the more harmed.
36:257
For indeed you come together unto judgment, having no longer any excuse for your sin, and you drive out the more reverent, harassing on every side those who are troubled by your idle chatter.
36:258
But what is the saying of the many? 'I do not hear the things that are read,' one says, 'nor do I know what the words spoken are.'
36:259
Because you make a disturbance, because you cause tumult, because you do not come with a soul that has reverence.
36:260
What do you say? You do not know what the words spoken are? For this very reason you ought to have paid attention.
36:261
The obscure rouses your soul—far more so; whereas if it were clear, you would have run past it.
36:262
For on this account not all things are clear—lest you grow slothful—nor all obscure—lest you despair.
36:263
那位太監,那位外邦人,卻沒有說這些話,反倒雖被這麼多事務的紛擾所纏繞,又在路途之中,仍手裡拿著書卷誦讀,儘管他並不明白所讀的是甚麼;
And that eunuch, that barbarian, said none of these things, but even though encompassed by a throng of so many affairs, and being on the road, he held a book in his hands and was reading, though he did not understand what he was reading;
36:264
but you, though you have an abundance of teachers, and have others who read to you, put forward pretexts and excuses to me.
36:265
你不知道所講的?那就當禱告,好叫你能明白;
You do not know the things spoken? Then pray that you may learn;
36:266
or rather, it is impossible to be ignorant of everything.
36:267
因為的確有許多事物本身就是顯明清楚的;
For indeed many things are of themselves plain and clear;
36:268
or rather, even if you were ignorant of all things, even so you ought to keep silent, lest you drive out those who are attentive—so that God, receiving your quietness and reverence, may make even the obscure things plain.
36:269
But you cannot keep silent? Then go out, lest you become a harm to others as well.
36:270
For indeed there ought always to be one voice in the church, as though it were a single body.
36:271
為此緣故,誦讀者也是獨自發聲;
For this reason the reader too speaks alone;
36:272
連那擔任監督之職的,也甘願靜坐無聲;
and even he who holds the office of bishop endures to sit in silence;
36:273
唱詩者也獨自歌唱;
and the psalm-singer sings alone;
36:274
縱使眾人應和,那聲音也如同從一張口發出;
and even though all respond, the voice is carried as from a single mouth;
36:275
and he who preaches, preaches alone.
36:276
But when many speak many and diverse things, why do we trouble you to no purpose? For not even if you deem that we trouble you not to no purpose—while we are speaking about matters so great—would you be conversing about things that in no way concern you.
36:277
因這些緣故,你們裡面有極大的乖謬,不僅在生活行事上,甚至在對事物本身的判斷上;
For these reasons there is much perversity in you, not only in your manner of life, but even in your very judgment of matters;
36:278
and you gape after superfluous things, and, forsaking the truth, you pursue shadows and dreams.
36:279
Or are not all present things shadow and dreams, and worse than a shadow? For before they appear, they fly away, and before they fly off, they cause much tumult and more than the pleasure they give.
36:280
縱使有人在此得了千萬財富,把它埋藏起來,一夜過去,他仍是赤身離世——這也是理所當然的;
And even if a man, having gotten ten thousand riches here, should bury them, when the night has passed he departs hence naked—and very rightly so;
36:281
因為連那些在夢中致富的人,一從床上起來,就毫無他們睡著時所以為擁有的東西;
since even those who grow rich in a dream, when they have risen from their bed, have none of the things they seemed to have while sleeping;
36:282
那些貪心之人也是如此;
so also is it with the covetous;
36:283
or rather, not so, but even much worse.
36:284
因為那在夢中致富的人,既沒有他所幻想擁有的財富,也沒有因那幻象而受著甚麼別的害處就起來;
For he who grows rich in a dream neither has the riches which he imagined himself to have, nor does he rise up having taken any other harm from that fancy;
36:285
但這人卻既失去了財富,又滿載著那由財富而生的罪去了,並且他在財富中幻想過一番,如今卻不再是在幻想中,而是在事物本身的真實中看見那由財富而來的禍患;
but this man is deprived of the riches, yet departs having been filled with the sins that come from riches, and, having fancied himself in wealth, he beholds the evils that come from wealth no longer in fancy, but in the very reality of things;
36:286
and the pleasure came to pass in dreams, but the punishment that comes from the pleasure no longer befalls as a dream, but in the very experience—or rather, even before that punishment, here also he pays the uttermost penalty, in the very gathering rubbing upon himself countless despondencies, anxieties, accusations, slanders, tumults, and disturbances.
36:287
In order, then, that we may be delivered both from the dreams and from the evils that are not in dreams, let us choose almsgiving instead of covetousness, love of mankind instead of rapine.
36:288
For thus shall we attain unto both the present and the future good things, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
