Now if Timothy come, see that he may be with you without fear.
44:2
或許有人認為這樣的勸勉配不上提摩太的剛勇;
Perhaps someone thinks this exhortation unworthy of the manly courage of Timothy;
44:3
然而這話並非為提摩太的緣故而說,乃是為聽者的緣故,免得他們因謀害他而傷及自己;
but it was said not for Timothy's sake, but for the sake of the hearers, lest by their plotting against him they should do harm to themselves;
44:4
for that man was ever set in the midst of dangers.
44:5
For 'as a child with a father he served with me in the Gospel,' he says.
44:6
But lest, from their insolence toward the disciple, they should proceed also against the teacher and become worse, he checks them from afar off, saying:
44:7
'That he may be with you without fear;'
44:8
that is, that none of those desperate men rise up against him.
44:9
因為他也可能要為保羅所寫的那些事責備他們;
For he too was likely to rebuke them for those things concerning which Paul also had written;
44:10
for indeed he had promised to send him for this very purpose.
44:11
'For I have sent Timothy unto you,' he says, 'who shall put you in remembrance of my ways which are in Christ, even as I teach everywhere in every Church.'
44:12
In order, then, that they might not, trusting in noble birth and wealth and the support of the populace and outward wisdom, assail him and spurn him and plot against him, being pained at his reproofs, or, for the things wherein the teacher had rebuked them, demand satisfaction of that man by way of retaliation—for this cause he says:
44:13
'That he may be with you without fear.'
44:14
你不要向我提那些在教外的人,就是希臘人和不信的人;
For do not name to me those outside, the Greeks and the unbelievers;
44:15
it is of you that I make this demand, for whose sake also the whole Epistle was composed, and whom he had struck with fear even at the very beginning and in the opening words.
44:16
Then from his ministry he makes him worthy of credit, saying:
44:17
'For he worketh the work of the Lord.'
44:18
For look not, he says, at this—whether he is not rich, whether he is not well-educated, nor whether he is aged—but at what he is charged with and accomplishes:
44:19
'For he worketh the work of the Lord.'
44:20
And this suffices him in the place of all—of noble birth, and wealth, and age, and wisdom.
44:21
And he was not content with this, but added—
44:22
and higher up: 'Who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord;'
44:23
'he shall put you in remembrance of my ways which are in Christ.'
44:24
Since, then, he was both young, and alone had been entrusted with the correction of so great a people, and both these things tended toward contempt, with good reason he adds:
44:25
'Let no one therefore despise him.'
44:26
他所要求的不只是這個,更是要有更大的尊敬;
And he does not demand this only, but also greater honor;
44:27
'But set him forward on his journey in peace;'
44:28
that is, without fear—not stirring up strifes and contentions, not enmities and hostilities, but yielding to him submission and honor, as attending to a teacher.
44:29
'for I look for him with the brethren.'
44:30
And this too was calculated to make them fear.
44:31
For that, knowing that everything which Timothy might suffer would be reported to him, they might become more gentle, on this account he added:
44:32
And in another way too he here makes him worthy of credit, seeing that, though about to depart, he waits for him; and he shows his love toward those Corinthians, when he is seen to have sent for their sake one so useful.
44:33
Now concerning Apollos the brother, I besought him much that he would come unto you with the brethren.
44:34
This man seems both to be well-educated and to be older than Timothy.
44:35
Why ever then did he not send the elder man, but the younger in his stead? See how he soothes this matter too, both calling him brother and saying that he had besought him much, in these words:
44:36
For lest he should seem to have preferred Timothy to him, and for this reason not to have sent him, and so kindle greater envy, he added:
44:37
'I besought him much that he would come.'
44:38
What then? Did that man not yield nor consent, but resisted and contended? He does not say this, but, that he might neither cast blame on Apollos nor make excuse for himself, he says:
44:39
'And it was not at all his will that he should come now.'
44:40
Then, lest they should say that these were pretenses and an excuse, he added:
44:41
'But he will come to you when he shall have opportunity.'
44:42
By this he both made his defense on that man's behalf, and gave rest to them who longed for him, through the hope of his coming.
44:43
Then, showing that they ought to place their hopes of salvation not in their teachers only, but also in themselves, he says:
44:44
'Watch, stand fast in the faith.'
44:45
因為在那境地裡並沒有靜止不動,人乃是不斷被帶著往前行;
For there is no standing still in that realm, but one is ever being carried onward;
44:46
so then, to stand fast is precisely to stand in the faith.
44:47
'Let all your things be done in love.'
44:48
In saying these things he seems indeed to be exhorting them, yet he is also laying hold of them as of men grown slack.
44:49
「你們務要警醒」,是對那些沉睡的人說的;
'Watch,' as to men who were sleeping;
44:50
「站立得穩」,是對那些搖動不定的人說的;
'Stand fast,' as to men who were being shaken;
44:51
「要作大丈夫,要剛強」,是對那些變為軟弱的人說的;
'Be manly, be strong,' as to men grown soft;
44:52
'Let all your things be done in love,' as to men who were factious.
44:53
「務要警醒,站立得穩」這話,是針對那些被迷惑的人說的;
And the words 'Watch, stand fast' are addressed to those who were being deceived;
44:54
「要作大丈夫」這話,是針對那些設謀陷害他們的人說的;
the word 'Be manly' is addressed to those who were plotting against them;
44:55
and the words 'Let all your things be done in love' are addressed to those who were factious and sought to tear the Church apart—love, which is the bond of perfectness, and the root and fountain of all good things.
44:56
那麼「凡事憑愛心」是什麼意思呢?他說,無論人是責備、是治理、是受治理、是學習、還是教導,一切都當以愛心而行;
But what is the meaning of 'all things in love'? Whether one rebukes, he says, or rules, or is ruled, or learns, or teaches—let all things be done with love;
44:57
since indeed all the aforesaid evils arose from love having been neglected.
44:58
For if this had not been neglected, they would not have been puffed up, they would not have said:
44:59
「我是屬保羅的,我是屬亞波羅的」;
'I am of Paul, and I of Apollos';
44:60
倘若這愛還在,他們就不會到世人面前去打官司,甚至根本就不會去打官司了;
if it had been present, they would not have gone to law before the world—nay, rather, they would not have gone to law at all;
44:61
if it had been present, that man would not have taken his father's wife, they would not have despised the weaker brethren, they would not have had their sects, they would not have vaunted themselves vaingloriously over their spiritual gifts.
44:62
For this reason he says, 'Let all things be done with love.'
44:63
'I beseech you, brethren—you know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have appointed themselves to the ministry of the saints.'
44:64
And at the very beginning of the Epistle he made mention of this man, saying:
44:65
「我也給司提反一家施了洗」;
'And I baptized also the household of Stephanas';
44:66
and now he calls him the firstfruits, not of Corinth alone, but of the whole of Greece.
44:67
And this too is no small praise, to have been the first to come to Christ.
44:68
Wherefore also in the Epistle to the Romans, praising certain persons on this very ground, he said:
44:69
'Who also were in Christ before me.'
44:70
And he did not say that they believed first, but 'They became firstfruits,' showing that together with the faith they also displayed a most excellent manner of life—as in the case of fruits, offering themselves worthy on every side.
44:71
因為初結的果子,理當比其餘所出的果子更為美好;
For the firstfruits must needs be better than the rest whereof they are the firstfruits;
44:72
and this indeed Paul testified concerning these men by this very expression.
44:73
For not only did they believe genuinely, as I said, but they also displayed much reverence, and virtue in its full vigor, and a generous zeal in acts of mercy.
44:74
And not from this alone, but from another quarter also he shows their reverence—namely, from their having filled their whole household with piety.
44:75
And that they abounded in good works also, he makes plain by what follows, saying:
44:76
'They appointed themselves to the ministry of the saints.'
44:77
你聽見了他們接待客旅所受的稱讚何等之大嗎?因為他沒有說「他們服事」,乃說「他們專以此為念」;
Did you hear how great is the praise of their hospitality? For he did not say 'They minister,' but 'They appointed themselves';
44:78
this manner of life they chose for all time; this is the pursuit to which they devote themselves.
44:79
'That you also may submit yourselves to such.'
44:80
That is, 'That you may join in taking up the burden both in the expenditure of money and in the service of the body, that you may share in the fellowship.'
44:81
For to them also the labor will be light when they have fellow-helpers, and the fruit of the beneficence will pass on to a greater number.
44:82
And he did not say simply 'Work together,' but also 'In whatsoever things they may bid you, obey them,' displaying the intensity of the obedience required.
44:83
And lest he should seem to be showing favor to them, he added:
44:84
'And to every one that labors and works together with us.'
44:85
他說,願這成為一條通則;
Let this, he says, be a common rule;
44:86
for I do not speak of those men in particular, but if anyone is like them, let this man too enjoy the same treatment.
44:87
For this reason, as he begins to commend them, he calls the Corinthians themselves as witnesses, saying:
44:88
'I beseech you—you know the house of Stephanas.'
44:89
'For you yourselves also know,' he says, 'how they toil, and you have no need to learn it from us.'
44:90
「司提反、福徒拿都、亞該古到這裡來,我很喜樂,因為你們所缺欠的,他們都補上了;
'And I rejoiced at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because that which was lacking on your part they themselves supplied;
44:91
for they refreshed my spirit and yours.'
44:92
因為那些人很可能對他們懷有敵意(原來正是這幾個人來到、把有關結黨的事告訴了他;
For since it was likely that they had grown savage against these men (for these were the ones who had come and disclosed to him the matters concerning the faction;
44:93
for it was through these that they wrote also the things concerning the virgins and concerning those that had married)—see how he soothed them, having said at the beginning of the Epistle:
44:94
「因為革來氏家裡的人曾對我提起你們的事」;
'For it hath been declared unto me concerning you by them which are of the house of Chloe';
44:95
他把這幾個人隱藏起來,卻把那家裡的人推到前面來;
and by concealing these men, and bringing those others into the midst;
44:96
因為那家裡的人很可能就是藉著這幾個人把消息傳來的;
for it was likely that those had made the disclosure through these men;
44:97
但在這裡他卻說:「你們所缺欠的,他們都補上了,並且使我和你們的靈都得了暢快」;
but here he says, 'That which was lacking on your part they supplied, and they refreshed my spirit and yours';
44:98
showing that they had come in the stead of all, and had chosen to undertake so great a journey abroad on their behalf.
44:99
How then may this private good become common? If you shall make amends for the deficiency by your goodwill toward them, if you honor them, if you receive them gladly, if you share with them in the good work.
44:100
'Acknowledge therefore such men.'
44:101
And while praising those who had come, he interweaves those others also into the encomium—linking the senders with the sent—saying that 'They refreshed my spirit and yours.'
44:102
'Acknowledge therefore such men, that for your sakes they left their country and their home.'
44:103
你看見他的智慧了嗎?他指明他們所施的恩惠不僅是對保羅一人,也是對那些人,因為他們是把全城都帶在自己身上;
Did you see his prudence? He shows that they bestowed a favor not upon Paul alone, but upon those others as well, in that they carried the whole city about with them in their persons;
44:104
which both made these men trustworthy, and did not suffer those others to sever themselves from them, inasmuch as it was through them that they had presented themselves to Paul.
44:105
'All the Churches of Asia salute you.'
44:106
他總是藉著問安,把肢體聚集並黏合在一起;
He is ever gathering and cementing the members together by means of the salutation;
44:107
'Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord.'
44:108
For with these he abode, being a tentmaker.
44:109
'With the Church that is in their house.'
44:110
And this too is no small virtue, to have made even one's house a church.
44:111
'All the brethren salute you.'
44:112
'Greet one another with a holy kiss.'
44:113
This addition of the holy kiss he inserts here only.
44:114
Why so? They had been greatly divided from one another by their saying, 'I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas, and I of Christ';
44:115
又因為這個飢餓,那個酒醉;
by the one being hungry and the other drunken;
44:116
by their having strifes and jealousies and lawsuits.
44:117
And from the spiritual gifts too there was much envy, much arrogance.
44:118
Since therefore he had joined them together by his exhortation, he fittingly bids them also be joined together through the holy kiss.
44:119
因為這使人合而為一,並生出一個身體;
For this unites, and gives birth to one body;
44:120
this is holy, when it is not with guile and under condemnation.
44:121
'The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand.'
44:122
他顯明這封書信是用極大的殷勤寫成的;
He shows that the Epistle was composed with much diligence;
44:123
wherefore also he added this.
44:124
'If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema.'
44:125
By this one word he struck fear into all: those who were making their own members the members of a harlot, those who were causing offence to the brethren through things sacrificed to idols, those who were named after men, those who disbelieved the resurrection.
44:126
And he not only struck fear, but also showed the road of virtue and the fountain of vice.
44:127
因為正如對祂的愛,當它火熱起來的時候,就止息並驅逐一切種類的罪;
For just as love toward Him, when it becomes fervent, quenches and thrusts out all kinds of sins;
44:128
so when it is weaker, it causes these to spring up.
44:129
For what reason was this said? And why also
44:130
用希伯來話說呢?因為驕傲乃是他們一切惡事的根源;
in the Hebrew tongue? Because pride was the cause of all their evils;
44:131
而這驕傲是外邦的智慧所造成的,這正是諸惡之首,尤其把哥林多撕裂了;
and this pride the wisdom from without produced, and this was the head of their evils, which above all tore Corinth asunder;
44:132
so, in repressing their pride, he uses not even the Greek language but the Hebrew, showing that not only is he not ashamed of his lack of learning, but even embraces it with much warmth.
44:133
But what is 'Maranatha'? 'Our Lord has come.'
44:134
那麼他為甚麼說這句話呢?乃是要堅立那論到救贖經綸的道理,他也正是從這道理中,尤其編織出復活的種子;
For what reason then does he say this very thing? Confirming the word of the dispensation, from which especially he had put together the seeds of the resurrection;
44:135
and not this only, but also putting those men to shame, as though he were saying:
44:136
The common Master of all deigned to descend so far, and are you in the very same state, and do you persist in sinning? And do you not shudder at the exceeding greatness of His love, the head of all good things? For consider this one thing only, he says, and it will suffice you for advancement in every virtue, and you will be able to quench every sin.
44:137
'The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.'
44:138
This is the mark of a teacher, to help not only with counsels but also with prayers.
44:139
'My love be with you all in Christ Jesus.'
44:140
For lest they should think that he ended in this way merely to flatter them, he says:
44:141
因為這愛毫無人的成分,也毫無屬肉體的成分,乃是一種屬靈的愛;
For it has nothing human nor fleshly, but is a kind of spiritual love;
44:142
for indeed the word was that of one who loved exceedingly.
44:143
For since he was separated from them by distance, as though by the stretching out of a right hand, he embraces them with the hands of love, saying, 'My love be with you,' as though he were saying:
44:144
By these words he shows that what was written was not of wrath nor of anger, but of tender care; seeing that, after so great an accusation, he does not turn away from them, but even loves and embraces them, though they are far off, being poured out upon them through these Epistles and letters.
44:145
因為凡要糾正別人的,理當這樣行;
For thus ought he to act who would set others right;
44:146
因為那單憑忿怒行事的人,不過是發洩自己的情慾;
since he who acts merely out of anger only satisfies his own passion;
44:147
but he who, after having corrected the sinner, also displays the marks of love, shows that even those things he said in rebuke were of affection.
44:148
所以我們也當這樣彼此教導,那責備人的不可惱怒;
So then let us also instruct one another, and let neither him who reproves be angry;
44:149
因為這不是糾正,乃是情慾;
for this is not of correction but of passion;
44:150
那受責備的也不可煩惱;
nor let him who is reproved be vexed;
44:151
for what is done is a healing, not an enmity.
44:152
醫生的門徒施行燒灼卻不受責備,他們甚至常常達不到目的;那些被燒被割的人,雖然疼痛,卻仍把那激起這疼痛的人看為恩人;
But if physicians' sons cauterize and are not blamed—often even failing of their end—and even those who are burned and cut, though in pain, count as benefactors those who stir up this pain;
44:153
much more ought he who receives a reproof to be so disposed, and to attend to him who corrects as to a physician, and not as to an enemy.
44:154
而我們這些施行責備的人,也當帶著極大的溫柔、極大的明智前來;你若看見弟兄犯錯,就當照基督所吩咐的,不要把責備張揚出去,只在你和他之間單獨行之,不是辱罵,也不是踐踏那已跌倒的人,乃是自己憂傷、自己焦心;
And let us too who administer the rebuke approach with much gentleness, with much discretion; and if you see your brother sinning, as Christ commanded, do not make the reproof public, but between you and him alone, not reproaching nor trampling on him when he is down, but yourself grieving and pining away;
44:155
and hold yourself ready also to be reproved, if you should be at fault in anything.
44:156
為要使我所說的更加明白,讓我們用一個假設的例子來操練這番話;
And that what I say may become clearer, let us exercise the argument by way of a supposition;
44:157
因為但願在真實的事上,絕不容易找著這樣的例子;
for God forbid that in the very truth of things one should easily find such an example;
44:158
Let there be some brother dwelling together with a virgin, orderly indeed and chaste, yet let him not even so escape the evil report.
44:159
If then you hear this cohabitation talked about, do not make light of it, nor say:
44:160
「難道他沒有自己的心思嗎?難道他自己不知道甚麼對他有益嗎?不要枉然愛,也不要枉然恨;
'For has he no mind of his own? Does he not himself know what is expedient? Do not love in vain, and do not hate in vain;
44:161
for what concern is it of mine to take up a needless enmity?' These are the foolish words of beasts, or rather of demons.
44:162
For it is not possible to be hated in vain by one who does this for the sake of correction, but rather it is for great benefits and unspeakable crowns.
44:163
但你若說:「怎麼呢,難道他沒有自己的心思嗎?」你要從我們聽見,他確是沒有;
But if you should say, 'What then, has he no mind of his own?' you shall hear from us that he has not;
44:164
for if in the courts of the world those who are wronged are unable to speak on their own behalf when boiling with anger—and yet this fellow-feeling is no accusation—
44:165
how much more those who are held fast by an evil habit? For this reason I say that even if he be ten thousand times prudent, he has not a wakeful mind.
44:166
他豈比大衛更有智慧嗎?大衛乃是那說「你所隱藏並不明的智慧,你已使我知道」的人;然而當他用不義的眼目看那兵丁的妻子時,那時,正如他論到那些在狂怒之海上航行的人所說的,「他一切的智慧都被吞滅了」;
He was wiser than David, a man who said, 'The hidden and secret things of Thy wisdom Thou hast made known to me'; but when he looked upon the wife of his soldier with unjust eyes, then—as he said of those sailing on a raging sea—'All his wisdom was swallowed up';
44:167
and he needed others to set him right, and did not even perceive amid what evils he was.
44:168
Wherefore also, lamenting his sins, he said:
44:169
'As a heavy burden they weighed heavy upon me.'
44:170
'My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.'
44:171
所以犯罪的人是沒有心思的;
The sinner therefore has no mind;
44:172
所以你不要說這些話,也不要加上那句「這與我無干」;
Say not, then, these things, nor add that, 'It is no concern of mine';
44:173
'For each man shall bear his own burden.'
44:174
For indeed a very great charge arises against you also, that having seen him gone astray you did not raise him up.
44:175
因為若照猶太人的律法,連仇敵的驢也不可置之不理,那麼,那眼看著一個靈魂沉淪——不是驢,也不是仇敵的靈魂,乃是朋友的靈魂——卻漠然置之的人,還能得著甚麼寬恕呢?因為單說那人自有心思,並不足以為我們開脫;
For if, according to the law of the Jews, one must not overlook the beast of burden of one's enemy, what pardon shall he obtain who overlooks—not a beast of burden, nor an enemy's soul, but a friend's soul—perishing? For it does not even suffice for our defense that the other man has a mind of his own;
44:176
since we too, though we have often given much exhortation, have not sufficed for our own selves, nor become useful.
44:177
This then consider also concerning that erring man, that it is likely he will more readily receive excellent counsel from you than from himself, and do not say:
44:178
「這與我何干呢?」你當懼怕那最先說這話的人;
'But what concern is this of mine?' Fear him who first spoke this word;
44:179
因為那句「我豈是看守我兄弟的嗎?」與這話正是同出一轍;
for the saying, 'Am I my brother's keeper?' comes to the same thing as this;
44:180
hence are born all evils, that we account the things of our own body to be alien to us.
44:181
What do you say? You have no concern for your brother? But to whom shall he be a concern? To the unbeliever, who exults and reproaches and leaps upon him? Or to the devil, who thrusts him down and trips him up? And whence comes this? 'Because I accomplish nothing,' he says, 'by speaking and counseling what is fitting.'
44:182
But how is it clear that you will not succeed? For this too, in turn, is the mark of utter folly: while the outcome lies still in uncertainty, to incur the charge of an admitted sloth.
44:183
And yet God, who foreknew things to come, often spoke and did not prevail, and even so He did not desist—and this though He knew that He was not about to persuade.
44:184
但若那位預知自己不會有更多成效的神,尚且不肯放棄糾正的工作,那麼你這對將來全然無知、卻又鬆懈麻木的人,還能有什麼藉口呢?因為許多人多次嘗試之後終究成功了;
But if He who foreknew that He would accomplish nothing more does not refrain from setting things right, what excuse will you have—you who are wholly ignorant of the future, yet grow slack and numb? For many, having often made the attempt, did succeed;
44:185
and when they had most of all despaired, then most of all did they attain their end.
44:186
But even if you accomplish nothing further, you have done your own part.
44:187
Therefore do not become inhuman, nor unmerciful, nor careless.
44:188
For that these words are the marks of cruelty and of sloth is plain from this consideration.
44:189
For why is it that, when one of the members of your body is ailing, you do not say:
44:190
'What is it to me, and how is it clear that, if it receives care, it will be made whole?' Rather, you do everything, so that even if you help it not at all, you may not have to accuse yourself that any of the things which ought to be done was left undone.
44:191
Then shall we so care for the members of the body, yet neglect those of Christ? And where is this deserving of pardon? For if I do not bend you by saying, 'Take thought for your own member, that at least out of fear you may become better,' I remind you of the body of Christ.
44:192
眼見他的肉體正在腐爛,卻置之不理,這豈不令人戰慄嗎?倘若你有一個僕人或一頭驢子生了膿瘡,你尚且不忍坐視不顧;
For how is it not worthy of horror to see his flesh rotting away, and to overlook it? And if indeed you had a servant or a donkey afflicted with a sore, you would not endure to overlook it;
44:193
yet when you see the body of Christ filled with scab, do you pass it by? And do you not consider these things worthy of ten thousand thunderbolts? For this reason all things have been turned upside down—because of this inhumanity, because of this sloth.
44:194
因此,我懇求你們,讓我們除掉這殘忍;
Wherefore, I beseech you, let us cast out this cruelty;
44:195
去到那與童女同住的人跟前,對那弟兄說幾句稱讚的話,就從他所擁有的其他長處來構成這些讚語;
approach that man who dwells together with the virgin, and speak a small word of praise concerning the brother, composing it out of the other advantages which he possesses;
44:196
彷彿用溫水以稱讚沐浴他一般,如此消退他傷處的腫脹;
and as though bathing him with warm water by your praises, so soften the swelling of his wound;
44:197
count yourself also wretched, accuse the common race of men, show that we all are involved in sins, ask pardon, saying that you are undertaking matters greater than yourself, but that love persuades one to venture all things.
44:198
隨後在勸告時,不要以命令的口吻,而要以弟兄的方式來作這事;
Then in giving counsel, do this not in a commanding manner, but in a brotherly one;
44:199
並且先撫慰那將要來的責備如同刀割所帶來的痛楚,屢次表示歉意,又懇求他不要動怒;
and having soothed the pain that will arise from the incision of the coming reproof, and having often made use of an apology, and having entreated him not to be angered;
44:200
when you have bound him fast with these things, then apply the blow, neither making the matter too tight nor too loose, so that he may neither leap away from thence nor despise it from hence.
44:201
因為你若不擊中要害,就毫無成效;
For if on the one hand you do not deal a decisive blow, you have accomplished nothing further;
44:202
but if on the other you strike too violently, you have caused him to bolt away.
44:203
因此,當你在這一切之後將要責備時,要再次把稱讚摻雜在責備之中;
Wherefore, when after all these things you are about to reprove, again mingle praise with the reproofs;
44:204
and since the thing that is being done cannot in itself be a subject of praise (for it is not worthy of commendation to dwell together with a young maiden), work this out from the intention of him who dwells with her, and say: 'I know indeed that you do this for God's sake, and that, beholding the desolation and the unprotected state of that poor woman, you stretched out a hand.'
44:205
And even if he does not act with this intention, do you nevertheless speak thus, and after this add these things too, again making use of an apology, and saying: 'I say these things not in command, but as a reminder;'
44:206
「你是為神的緣故而行,這我也知道;
'you do it for God's sake, I too know;
44:207
但讓我們看看,是否會由此生出別的禍患來;
but let us see whether some other evil is not born of this;
44:208
若沒有,你就把它存在心裡,緊守這美好的熱心,沒有人攔阻你;
and if there be none, keep it within, and hold fast to this good zeal—no one hinders you;
44:209
but if some harm arise from this greater than the gain, let us take heed, I beseech you, lest in hastening to give rest to one soul, we cause ten thousand to stumble.'
44:210
And do not straightway add the punishments laid up for those who cause offence, but take his own testimony to help you, saying:
44:211
'You have no need to learn these things from me; you yourself also know that if anyone offends one of these little ones, how great a penalty is threatened;'
44:212
and having thus sweetened your speech, and smoothed away his wrath, apply the medicine of correction.
44:213
But if he again pleads her desolation as an excuse, do not even so refute the pretext, but say to him:
44:214
「不要讓這些事使你懼怕,你必有充分的辯解,就是別人所受的絆跌;
'Let none of these things frighten you; you will have a sufficient defence—the offence given to others;
44:215
for it was not out of sloth, but out of care for them, that you desisted from this zeal.'
44:216
勸告的部分要簡短;
And let the part of counsel be in brief;
44:217
因為這實在不需要許多教導;
for indeed it needs no great instruction;
44:218
但求恕與寬容的部分,卻要充分而反覆;
but let the part of pardon, on the other hand, be much and repeated;
44:219
and take refuge in love continually, casting a shade over the burdensomeness of what has been said, and giving him the authority, saying: 'I indeed exhort and counsel these things, but he himself is master of being persuaded;'
44:220
'for I do not constrain nor compel, but entrust the whole to your own judgement.'
44:221
我們若以這樣的方式來施行責備,就能輕易地糾正那些犯罪的人;
If we handle the reproof in this manner, we shall be able easily to set right those who sin;
44:222
whereas what we now do belongs rather to wild beasts and irrational creatures than to human beings.
44:223
因為如今若有人察覺到某人在這類事上犯罪,他們對那人一句話也不說,卻彼此之間如同醉酒的老婦一般竊竊私語;
For if now certain persons perceive someone sinning in such matters, to that man they say nothing at all, but among themselves, like drunken old women, they whisper with one another;
44:224
在這裡,「不要無故地愛,不要無故地恨」這句話,在他們看來竟毫無立足之地;但每當他們想要毀謗人時,就藐視那不至於無故被恨的顧慮,甚至藐視被刑罰的後果(因為由此不僅生出仇恨,更生出刑罰);
and nowhere here does the saying, 'Love not at random, hate not at random,' seem to them to have any place; but whenever they desire to speak evil, they despise the not-being-hated-at-random—rather, even the being punished (for from this is born not only hatred, but also punishment);
44:225
but whenever correction is needed, they bring forward this very thing and ten thousand other pretexts.
44:226
For these things you ought then to have considered—when you speak evil, when you slander: the 'Hate not at random,' and the 'I accomplish nothing,' and the 'It is no concern of mine.'
44:227
但如今,那時你倒是極其激烈而好管閒事地去探究,並且藐視仇恨與千萬的禍患;
But now, then indeed you meddle vehemently and inquisitively, and you despise hatred and ten thousand evils;
44:228
yet whenever it is necessary to take thought for the salvation of the brother, then you wish to be some unmeddlesome and unburdensome person.
44:229
其實毀謗會招來人的恨惡,也招來神的恨惡,而這你卻不甚介意;
And indeed from evil-speaking there arises hatred both toward men and toward God, and this does not greatly concern you;
44:230
but from private counsel and reproofs of this kind, there will be for you friendship both with this man and with God.
44:231
縱使他自己恨你,神反倒因此更加愛你;
And even if he himself hates you, God on this account remains loving you the more;
44:232
或者說,他這樣恨你,也不至於像從前當你毀謗他時他恨你那般深;
or rather, not even so will he hate you as when he hated you for speaking evil;
44:233
but then indeed he will turn away from you as from an enemy and foe, whereas now he will esteem you more venerable than any father.
44:234
And even if he is openly displeased, in his mind and privately he will know many thanks are owed to you.
44:235
Considering these things, therefore, let us take care of our members, and let us not
44:236
whet our tongue against one another, nor speak words of drowning, undermining our neighbour's good name, and, as in war and battle, striking and being struck.
44:237
當舌頭沉醉,並且以比狗肉更污穢的筵席為食,變得嗜血、傾吐污泥、使口成為污穢的溝渠與陰溝,甚至比這遠為可憎時,此後禁食或守夜還有什麼益處呢?因為那從陰溝流出的,只玷污了身體;
For what profit is there henceforth of fasting or of vigil, when the tongue is drunk, and feeds upon a table more unclean than dogs' flesh, becoming blood-drinking, and pouring forth filth, and making the mouth a sewer and channel of foulness—or rather far more loathsome than this? For that which proceeds from thence defiled the body;
44:238
but that which proceeds from hence has often choked the soul to death.
44:239
These things I say, not vainly caring for those who are evil spoken of (for they are even worthy of crowns, when they bear nobly the things said against them), but for you who speak.
44:240
因為聖經雖是徒然地稱那被人毀謗的人為有福,卻把那說毀謗之言的人趕出聖潔的奧祕之外,甚至趕出聖所的院牆之外;
For the Scriptures vainly count the one who is evil spoken of as blessed, but the one who speaks evil they cast out of the sacred mysteries—nay, even out of the very enclosures;
44:241
'For the one who slanders his neighbour in secret,' it says, 'him did I drive out;'
44:242
and it declares such a one to be unworthy even of the reading of the sacred books.
44:243
'For why,' it says, 'do you declare My statutes, and take up My covenant in your mouth?' Then, stating the cause, it says:
44:244
'Sitting, you spoke against your brother.'
44:245
在這裡,經上並未分辨所說的是真是假;
And here indeed it did not distinguish whether the things were true or false;
44:246
but elsewhere it forbade even this, showing that even if you speak the truth, these things are not to be uttered by you.
44:247
'For judge not,' it says, 'that you be not judged;'
44:248
since the one too who spoke evil of the publican was condemned, and that though he accused him with truth.
44:249
有人說:「那麼,若有人放肆污穢,我們豈不當糾正他、責備他嗎?」我們固然當責備並糾正他,只是要照我先前所說的方式;
'What then,' one says, 'if someone be insolent and defiled—must we not set him right, nor reprove him?' We must reprove and set him right, yet in the manner I described before;
44:250
but if you do this by reviling, take heed lest, imitating that Pharisee, you suffer the things which he suffered.
44:251
For no gain comes from thence—neither to you who speak, nor to that man who is thus accused as he hears.
44:252
然而那毀謗人的卻變得愈發厚顏無恥(因為當他尚未被人察覺時,他還懂得羞恥;
But the one who slanders becomes ever more shameless (for so long as he is unnoticed, he still knows how to feel shame;
44:253
but once he becomes evident and conspicuous, he casts off from himself even the restraint that remained).
44:254
And the one who listens, in turn, will be harmed all the more.
44:255
因為他若自覺行過善事,便會因別人受到的指控而自高自大、心中膨脹;
For if he is conscious of good deeds in himself, he is puffed up, swollen with pride at another man's accusations;
44:256
and if he is conscious of sins, he is made all the more eager for wickedness.
44:257
And the speaker himself, in turn, will acquire an evil reputation in the eyes of his hearer, and will provoke God more grievously against himself.
44:258
所以我懇求你們,讓我們摒棄一切臭穢的言語;
Therefore, I beseech you, let us cast out every foul-smelling word;
44:259
and if there is anything good for edification, let us speak that.
44:260
But do you desire to avenge yourself on that man? Why then do you take vengeance on yourself in his stead? For he who is eager to avenge himself on those who have grieved him, let him avenge himself in the manner that Paul commanded us to avenge ourselves:
44:261
'If your enemy hungers, feed him.'
44:262
But if you do not do this, and only plot against him, you are thrusting the sword against yourself.
44:263
因此,那人若毀謗你,你就以稱許和讚美回報他;
Wherefore, if that man speaks ill of you, requite him with commendations and praises;
44:264
for in this way you will both be able to avenge yourself on him, and you will free yourself from any evil suspicion.
44:265
因為那因被人毀謗而憂傷的人,顯得是出於一個邪惡的良心才如此受苦;
For the man who grieves at being spoken ill of seems to suffer this from an evil conscience;
44:266
but the man who laughs at what is said gives the greatest proof that he is conscious of no evil in himself.
44:267
Since, therefore, you benefit neither the hearer, nor yourself, nor the one being slandered, and you thrust the sword against yourself, at least from this consideration become more prudent.
44:268
本來理當是由天國、並由神所看為美善的事來說服你才對;
For it were fitting indeed that you should be persuaded by the kingdom of heaven and by the things that seem good to God;
44:269
但既然你的性情較為粗鈍,又像野獸一般咬人,那就至少受這番話的管教吧,好叫你被這些話語規勸而清醒過來,能夠單單被神所看為美善的事所調節,並且勝過一切情慾,得著那屬天的美善;
but since you are of a grosser disposition, and bite like a wild beast, be disciplined at least by this, so that, brought to your senses by these words, you may become able to be regulated solely by the things that seem good to God, and, becoming superior to every passion, may attain the heavenly good things;
44:270
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
