'I thank my God always concerning you, for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus;'
2:2
'that in everything you were enriched in Him.'
2:3
What he exhorts others to do, saying, 'In everything by thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God,' this he himself also practiced, teaching us always to begin with these words, and before all things to give thanks to God.
2:4
For nothing is so dear to God as to be thankful, both on our own behalf and on behalf of others.
2:5
因此他在幾乎每一封書信裏都把這事放在開端;
Wherefore also in nearly every Epistle he sets this at the beginning;
2:6
but here he does it even more necessarily than in the others.
2:7
因為那感謝的人,既是以受了恩待的身分感謝,也是為著恩典而感謝;
For he who gives thanks, both gives thanks as one who has been well treated, and gives thanks over a grace;
2:8
然而恩典既不是虧欠,也不是報答,也不是償還;
but grace is not a debt, nor a recompense, nor a repayment;
2:9
which everywhere indeed it is necessary to say, but much more in the case of the Corinthians, who were gaping after those who had divided the Church.
2:10
他出於深厚的情誼,把眾人所共有的據為己有,這也是眾先知向來所慣說的;
Out of much affection he seizes upon what is common and makes it his own, which also it was ever the custom of the prophets to say;
2:11
and he leads them on to the exhortation that they too should say this.
2:12
For he who speaks thus withdraws from all human things, and passes over to Him whom he calls upon with much affection.
2:13
For this a man can genuinely say who is ever ascending from the things of this life to God, and setting Him before all things always, and continually giving thanks, not only for the grace already given, but if ever anything good should come to pass afterward as well, for this too he offers up the same praise to Him.
2:14
For this reason he did not simply say, 'I thank,' but, 'Always on your behalf,' training them both ever to know grace, and to owe it to no other, but to God alone.
2:15
你看他如何從各方面糾正他們麼?因為那有恩典的地方,就沒有行為;
Do you see how from every side he sets them right? For where there is grace, there are not works;
2:16
where there are works, there is no longer grace.
2:17
If then it is grace, why do you think so highly of yourselves? From what source are you puffed up? By the grace given to you.
2:18
And through whom was it given? Was it through me, or through some other apostle? By no means, but through Jesus Christ.
2:19
For this is the meaning of the words, 'In Christ Jesus.' Observe how in many places the word 'in' stands in place of 'through whom.'
2:20
This, then, is by no means inferior to the phrase 'through.'
2:21
'That in everything you were made rich.'
2:22
Again, through whom? 'In Him,' he says.
2:23
And you were made rich not simply, but 'in everything.'
2:24
When, therefore, there is both wealth, and the wealth of God, and it is in everything, and through the Only-begotten, consider the unspeakable treasure.
2:25
'In all utterance and in all knowledge.'
2:26
By 'utterance' he means not that which is from without, but that which is of God.
2:27
For there is a knowledge apart from utterance, and there is a knowledge accompanied by utterance.
2:28
For indeed there are many who have knowledge, but do not have the gift of utterance, such as unlearned men, and who are unable to set forth clearly the things which they hold in their mind.
2:29
'But you are not such,' he says, 'but are capable both of understanding and of speaking.'
2:30
'Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you.'
2:31
Under the guise of praises and thanksgiving, he keenly takes hold of them.
2:32
For not through the philosophy that is from without, he says, nor through the education that is from without, but through the grace of God, and the wealth and the knowledge and the utterance given by Him, were you able to learn the doctrines of the truth and to be confirmed unto the testimony of the Lord, that is, unto the preaching.
2:33
For you enjoyed many signs, many wonders, unspeakable grace, so that you received the preaching.
2:34
If then you were confirmed through signs and grace, for what reason are you shaken? These words are at once both of one who reproves and of one who forestalls them beforehand.
2:35
'So that you come short in no gift.'
2:36
If those who were enriched in all utterance, so as to come short in no gift, how are these men carnal?
2:37
For if they were such from the beginning, much more are they so now.
2:38
How then does he call them carnal? 'For I could not speak to you,' he says, 'as to spiritual men, but as to carnal.'
2:39
What then is one to say? That having believed from the beginning, and having obtained gifts of every kind (for indeed they were zealous for them), they afterwards became more slothful.
2:40
Or, if not this, then that it is not with reference to
2:41
眾人所說的,無論是這些話或那些話都不是對一切人說的;
all of them that either these things or those are spoken;
2:42
but some things are addressed to those liable to the accusations, and others to those who plume themselves upon the praises.
2:43
至於他們仍舊有恩賜,他說:「有人有詩歌,有啟示,有方言,有翻方言的恩賜」;
For that they still had gifts, 'One has a psalm,' he says, 'has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation';
2:44
「凡事都當為造就人而行」;
'Let all things be done unto edification';
2:45
and, 'Let two or three prophets speak.'
2:46
But there is also something else to say, namely, that just as it is our custom to speak of the whole from the greater part, so also here he has spoken.
2:47
And together with these things I suppose that he is also hinting at his own case, that he too displayed the signs, even as he says in the second Epistle to them:
2:48
「我使徒的憑據,在你們中間用百般的忍耐顯出來了」;
'Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience';
2:49
and again, 'For what is it wherein you were inferior to the rest of the Churches?' Either, as I said, he is reminding them of his own doings, or he is saying these things to those who are still approved.
2:50
For there were many saints there, who also set themselves to the ministry of the saints, and became a firstfruits of Achaia, even as he shows toward the end.
2:51
But in another way also, even if the praises do not strictly hold to the truth, yet they are set down by way of wise management, preparing the way for the discourse.
2:52
For he who from the very outset utters harsh things, has by his words closed the hearing to the weaker sort.
2:53
因為聽的人若與他地位相等,就會惱怒;
For if the hearers be of equal rank, they are provoked to anger;
2:54
and if they be very much inferior, they will be grieved.
2:55
In order, then, that this may not happen, he makes his beginning from what seem to be commendations.
2:56
因為這其實並不是稱讚他們,乃是稱讚神的恩典;
For neither was this a commendation of them, but of the grace of God;
2:57
for to have one's sins forgiven and to be justified, this was of the gift from above.
2:58
For this very reason he also dwells upon these things, which display the loving-kindness of God, so that he may the more thoroughly purge out their disease.
2:59
'Waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
2:60
Why are you disturbed, he says, why are you troubled, because Christ is not present? Nay, He is indeed present, and the Day moreover is at the doors.
2:61
And mark his wisdom, how, having led them away from human things, he struck them with fear by reminding them of the dread judgment-seat, and showing that there is need not only of a good beginning, but also of a good ending.
2:62
因為除了這些恩賜以外,還當有其餘的美德,並要記念那日子;
For along with these gifts, and the rest of virtue, one must call to mind that Day;
2:63
and there is need of many labors, so that one may be able to come to the end.
2:64
And he says 'revelation,' showing that, even if He is not seen, yet He is, and is present even now, and then shall be made manifest.
2:65
For this reason you received the miracles, that you might remain steadfast.
2:66
'Who shall also confirm you unto the end, blameless.'
2:67
Here he seems indeed to be healing them, but what is said is free from all flattery.
2:68
For indeed he knows how to take hold of them, as when he says:
2:69
「現今有些人自高自大,以為我不到你們那裡去」;
'Now some are puffed up, as though I were not coming to you';
2:70
「你們願意怎麼樣呢?是要我帶著刑杖到你們那裡去,還是要我存慈愛溫柔的心呢?」又說:「你們既然尋求那在我裡面說話之基督的憑據?」他也隱然責備了他們;
'What will you? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and in a spirit of meekness?' and, 'Since you seek a proof of Christ speaking in me?' And he covertly accuses them as well;
2:71
for by saying 'shall confirm,' and 'blameless,' he shows that they were still being shaken, and were liable to accusation.
2:72
But do you observe how he ever rivets them to the name of Christ.
2:73
And he makes mention of no man, neither apostle nor teacher, but continually of Him whom they longed for, as though preparing to bring back to themselves those who were heavy-headed as if from some drunkenness.
2:74
因為在別的書信中,從沒有像這裡這樣不斷地寫出基督的名;
For nowhere in any other Epistle is the name of Christ set down so continually;
2:75
here, however, many times within a few lines, and by means of this he weaves almost the whole prelude.
2:76
「奉召作耶穌基督使徒的保羅,寫信給那在基督耶穌裡成聖、並求告我們主耶穌基督之名的人」;
'Paul, a called apostle of Jesus Christ, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, to those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ';
2:77
'grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.'
2:78
「我常為你們感謝我的神,因神在基督耶穌裡所賜給你們的恩典」;
'I thank my God for the grace given to you in Christ Jesus';
2:79
「正如基督的見證在你們中間得了堅固」;
'even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you';
2:80
「等候我們主耶穌基督的顯現」;
'waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ';
2:81
'who shall also confirm you blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
2:82
「神是信實的,你們原是被祂所召,好進入祂兒子我們的主耶穌基督的交通」;
'God is faithful, through whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord';
2:83
'and I beseech you through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
2:84
Do you see the continual recurrence of the name of Christ? Whence
2:85
it is plain even to the very dull, that he does this neither idly nor at random, but by the frequency of this good appellation he drains away their inflammation, and purges out the corruption of their disease.
2:86
'God is faithful, through whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son.'
2:87
Oh! How much has he said here!
2:88
What greatness of gift has he here disclosed!
2:89
You were called into fellowship with the Only-begotten, and do you give yourselves over to men? What could be worse than such wretchedness? And how were you called? Through the Father.
2:90
For since he was continually speaking of the Son as 'through Him' and 'in Him,' lest they should suppose that he mentions Him thus as being less than the Father, he ascribed this same act to the Father.
2:91
For it is not, he says, through this one and that one, but through the Father that you were called; through Him also were you enriched.
2:92
Again, you were called; you did not come of yourselves.
2:93
And what does 'into the fellowship of His Son' mean? Hear Him saying this very thing more plainly in another place:
2:94
'If we endure, we shall also reign with Him;'
2:95
'if we die with Him, we shall also live with Him.'
2:96
Then, since he had said something great, he added also a reasoning that carries an irrefutable assurance:
2:97
'For God is faithful,' he says;
2:98
祂若是真實的,祂所應許的也必成就;
and if He is true, what He has promised He will also perform;
2:99
祂已應許要使我們與祂的獨生子相交;
and He has promised to make us partakers of His Only-begotten Son;
2:100
因為祂正是為此才呼召了我們;
for it was unto this that He called us;
2:101
for the gifts of God and the calling of God are without repentance.
2:102
And these things he now lays down beforehand in his discourse, so that after the vehemence of his accusations they might not fall into despair.
2:103
因為那從神而來的事必然隨之而來,除非我們自己極其悖逆;
For assuredly the things which come from God will follow, unless we ourselves become exceedingly unruly;
2:104
even as the Jews, when they were called, were unwilling to receive the good things.
2:105
But this was no longer the fault of Him who called, but of their own perverseness.
2:106
For He indeed willed to give, but they, unwilling to receive, cast themselves out.
2:107
因為祂若是召他們去作一件勞苦艱難的事,即使如此,他們推辭仍不配得寬恕,但他們至少還有這一點可說;
For if He had called them to a laborious and toilsome matter, though even so they would not have been worthy of pardon in declining it, yet they would have had this very thing to plead;
2:108
but if it be unto cleansing and righteousness and sanctification and redemption and grace and free gift, and the good things prepared, which eye has not seen nor ear heard, and God is the one who calls, and calls through Himself, of what pardon could they be worthy who do not run to Him? Let no one therefore lay the blame upon God.
2:109
For the failure to believe comes not from Him who calls, but from those who spring away.
2:110
But, one says, He ought to have brought them in even against their will.
2:111
For He neither forces nor compels.
2:112
因為有誰在邀請人去得尊榮、冠冕、筵席和節慶時,會把人捆綁著、違背其意願地拖進來呢?沒有一個人這樣作;
For who, when inviting to honors and crowns and banquets and festivals, drags men in unwilling and in bonds? There is no one;
2:113
for this belongs to one who insults.
2:114
祂差人下地獄乃是違背他們意願的,但祂召人進國度卻是甘心樂意的;
It is to hell that He sends men against their will, but to the kingdom He calls them willingly;
2:115
祂領人入火,是把他們捆綁著、哀號著帶去的,但領人去得那無數的美物卻不是這樣;
to the fire He leads them bound and wailing, but to the countless good things it is not so;
2:116
since this would even discredit the good things themselves, if their nature were not such that men run to them even willingly, and with much gratitude.
2:117
And whence is it that not all choose them? one asks. From their own weakness.
2:118
And why does He not cut away their weakness? And how, tell me, and in what manner ought He to have cut it away? Did He not fashion a creation that teaches His love toward mankind and His power? 'For the heavens,' it says, 'declare the glory of God.'
2:119
祂豈不是也差遣了先知麼?豈不是也呼召並尊榮了人麼?豈不是行了神蹟奇事麼?豈不是賜下了成文的律法和自然的律法麼?豈不是差遣了子麼?豈不是差派了使徒麼?豈不是行了諸般異能麼?豈不是以地獄警戒人麼?豈不是應許了國度麼?豈不是每日使祂的日頭升起麼?祂所吩咐的豈不是這樣容易輕省,以致許多人憑其豐盛的操練竟超越了祂的命令麼?「我為我葡萄園所作的之外,還有甚麼可作,是我沒有作的呢?」有人說,祂為何不使知識與美德成為我們天生固有的呢?說這話的是誰呢?是希臘人還是基督徒?其實兩者都說,只是所爭論的並非同一件事;
Did He not also send prophets? Did He not call and honor men? Did He not work wonders? Did He not give a law, both written and natural? Did He not send the Son? Did He not send apostles? Did He not work signs? Did He not threaten hell? Did He not promise a kingdom? Does He not each day cause His sun to rise? Are not the things He has enjoined so easy and light that many surpass His commandments by their abundance of self-discipline? 'What ought to have been done to My vineyard that I have not done?' And why, one says, did He not make knowledge and virtue natural to us? Who says this—the Greek or the Christian? Both indeed, yet not concerning the same things;
2:120
but the one contends about knowledge, the other about the life.
2:121
所以我們要先向自己人說話;
Therefore we will speak first to our own;
2:122
for I am not so much concerned about those outside as about my own members.
2:123
What then does the Christian say? He ought to have implanted in us the very knowledge of virtue.
2:124
For if He had not implanted it, whence should we have known the things to be done and the things not to be done? whence the laws
2:125
and the tribunals? But it was not the knowledge, but the practice itself.
2:126
倘若一切都要出於神的作為,那麼你還能得甚麼賞賜呢?請告訴我,你和希臘人同樣犯罪時,神會同樣地刑罰麼?絕不會;
And of what reward would you have been receiving, if the whole were to be God's doing? For tell me, does God punish you and the Greek alike when you sin? By no means;
2:127
for you have meanwhile the boldness that comes from knowledge.
2:128
那麼,倘若有人現今說,論到知識,你和希臘人都要被看為配得同樣的事,你豈不會不悅麼?我想你會的;
What then, if someone were now to say that in respect of knowledge both you and the Greek shall be counted worthy of the same things, would you not be displeased? I think you would;
2:129
for you would say that the Greek, though able to find knowledge of himself, was unwilling.
2:130
那麼倘若他也說:「神本該天生就把知識安置在我們裡面,」你豈不要譏笑他,並對他說:「那你為何不去尋求呢?你為何不像我這樣殷勤呢?」你豈不要滿懷坦然地站立,說那因神沒有把知識天生安置在人裡面就控告神,乃是極端的愚妄麼?你之所以這樣說,是因為你在知識的事上已經成就了;
If then he too should say, 'God ought to have implanted knowledge in us by nature,' will you not laugh him to scorn, and say to him, 'Why then did you not seek it? why were you not diligent, as I was?' and will you not stand with much boldness, and say that it was the height of folly to accuse God because He did not implant knowledge by nature? And these things you will say because the matter of knowledge has been achieved by you;
2:131
so too, if the matter of life had been achieved, you would not have sought these things; but because you grow weary in the pursuit of virtue, for this reason you put forward these foolish arguments.
2:132
And how ought He to have made a good thing come about by necessity? In that case the irrational animals would contend with us for virtue, seeing that some of them are more temperate than we.
2:133
But I would rather, he says, be good by necessity and be deprived of all rewards, than be base by my own choice and be punished and chastised.
2:134
But it is never possible to be good by necessity.
2:135
那麼你若不知道當作的是甚麼,就顯明出來,那時我們必說當說的話;
If then you are ignorant of what ought to be done, show it, and then we will say what needs to be said;
2:136
but if you know that wantonness is wicked, why do you not flee from the wicked thing? 'I cannot,' he says.
2:137
But others, who have accomplished the greater things, will accuse you and stop your mouth out of their great abundance.
2:138
For you perhaps, even when with a wife, are not chaste, while another, even without a wife, keeps his purity unblemished.
2:139
What defense then have you, who do not keep even the measure, when another leaps beyond the very lists? 'But I am not such by nature,' he says, 'either in the constitution of the body or in the will.'
2:140
這是因為你不願意,並不是因為你不能夠;
It is because you will not, not because you cannot;
2:141
for indeed I show that all men are by nature fitted for virtue.
2:142
因為一個人所不能作的事,即使有必然逼迫著,他也仍不能作;
For what a man cannot do, he will not be able to do even under the pressure of necessity;
2:143
but if, under the pressure of necessity, he who does not do it is able to do it, then it is contrary to his own will that he does it not.
2:144
To fly up and be borne to heaven with a body is altogether burdensome and impossible.
2:145
那麼,倘若有王吩咐要這樣行,並且威嚇說要處死,說:「凡不能飛的人,我命令要斬首焚燒,或受別的這類刑罰,」有誰會順從呢?絕不會有;
What then, if a king should command this to be done, and threaten death, saying, 'I order that the men who do not fly be beheaded and burned, or suffer some other such thing,' would anyone obey? By no means;
2:146
but if this same thing be done in the matter of chastity, and he lay down decrees that the wanton be punished and burned
2:147
and scourged and suffer countless dreadful things, would not many be persuaded to obey the command? 'No,' one says;
2:148
for even now there is a law laid down commanding men not to commit adultery, and not all obey it.
2:149
這不是因為那懼怕減弱了,乃是因為多數人指望能不被察覺;
It is not because the fear has grown weak, but because the many expect to escape notice;
2:150
for if the lawgiver and the judge were present with them when they were about to act wantonly, the fear would have had power to cast out the desire.
2:151
Since, if I were to bring to bear another necessity even less than this, and taking him away from the woman he loves lead him off and bind and shut him up, he will be able to endure and to suffer nothing distasteful.
2:152
Let us not then say that this man is good by nature and that man is bad by nature.
2:153
因為他若生來為善,就永不能變為惡;
For if he is good by nature, he can never become bad;
2:154
and if he is bad by nature, he could never become good.
2:155
But as it is, we see rapid changes, and men changing from these things to their opposites, and falling back from those to these.
2:156
而這些事不僅在聖經中可以看見,例如稅吏成了使徒,門徒成了賣主的,妓女成了貞潔的婦人,強盜蒙了嘉許,博士前來敬拜,不敬虔的人轉向了敬虔,這在新約之下和舊約之下都是如此;
And these things one may see not in the Scriptures only—for instance, that tax-collectors became apostles, and disciples became betrayers, and harlots became chaste women, and robbers were well approved, and magi worshipped, and the ungodly changed to godliness, both under the New Covenant and under the Old;
2:157
But one may see many such things happening every single day.
2:158
But if these things were natural, they would not undergo change.
2:159
For indeed, though we are by nature subject to passions, we would never by our own diligence become free from passion.
2:160
For that which is by nature something cannot fall away from what is according to nature.
2:161
No one, at any rate, has passed from sleeping to not sleeping, no one from
2:162
being corruptible to being incorruptible, no one from being hungry to never suffering this.
2:163
For this reason these things are not charges against us, nor do we reproach ourselves on their account.
2:164
Nor did anyone, when about to bring a charge against another, say:
2:165
but it is always adultery, or fornication, or something of the sort that we bring forward against the guilty, and we lead them before judges who accuse and punish, while for the contrary deeds they bestow honour.
2:166
所以,無論從我們彼此的所作所為,或從我們受審時所受的遭遇,或從我們所制定的律法,或從即使無人控告我們仍自我定罪這事,或從我們懶散時變得更壞、敬畏時變得更好這事,或從我們看見別人行事正直並達到德行巔峰這事——都極其明顯,行善乃在乎我們自己;
When therefore both from what we do to one another, and from what we suffer when brought to judgement, and from the laws we have enacted, and from the fact that we condemn ourselves even when there is no accuser, and from the fact that in idleness we become worse but in fear better, and from the fact that we see others succeeding and attaining to the summit of virtue—it is quite plain that right action lies within our own power;
2:167
那麼我們許多人為何要用那些冰冷的藉口和辯解徒然欺騙自己呢?這些藉口不但得不著赦免,反倒招致難以承受的刑罰。我們本當把那可畏的日子擺在眼前,殷勤追求德行,稍微勞苦,便可得著那不朽壞的冠冕。因為我們這些言辭絲毫不能為我們辯護;
why then do so many of us vainly deceive ourselves with cold pretexts and excuses that not only fail to obtain pardon but even bring unbearable punishment—when we ought rather, keeping that fearful Day before our eyes, to give heed to virtue, and by labouring a little, to receive the unfading crowns? For these words of ours will avail nothing to defend us;
2:168
but our fellow-servants who have accomplished the contrary virtues will condemn all who go astray—the merciful will condemn the cruel, the kind the wicked, the gentle the insolent, the amiable the envious, the wise the vainglorious, the earnest the slothful, the temperate the licentious.
2:169
Thus will God bring judgement upon us, and set both companies in their places, praising the one and punishing the other.
2:170
但願在座的沒有一人落在受懲罰、被羞辱之列,倒都在得冠冕、承受神國之列;
But God forbid that any of those present should be among the punished and dishonoured, but rather among the crowned and those who attain to the divine Kingdom;
2:171
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
