Pay what thou owest. And his fellow-servant, falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. But he would not; but went and cast him into prison till he should pay the debt. Now his fellow-servants, seeing what was done, were very much grieved; and they came and told their lord all that was done. Then his lord called him, and said to him: Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all the debt because thou besoughtest me; shouldst not thou then have had compassion also on thy fellow-servant, even as I had compassion on thee? And his lord, being angry, delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt. So also shall my heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not everyone his brother from your hearts.
And a little after: And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, and saying: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? Who answering said to them: Have ye not read that he who made man from the beginning made them male and female? and he said: For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh. Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder. They say to him: Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce and to put away? He saith to them: Because Moses, by reason of the hardness of your heart, permitted you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it was not so.
But I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery; and he that shall marry her that is put away committeth adultery. His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry. Who said: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who were born so from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made so by men; and there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take it, let him take it. Then were little children presented to him, that he should impose hands upon them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said to them: Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me; for the kingdom of heaven is for such.
And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from thence. And behold, one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting? Who said to him: Why askest thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith to him: Which? And Jesus said: Thou shalt do no murder; thou shalt not commit adultery; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not bear false witness; honour thy father and thy mother; and, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith to him: All these have I kept; what is yet wanting to me? Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go, sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad:
For he had great possessions. Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered very much, saying: Who then can be saved? And Jesus, beholding, said to them: With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Then Peter answering said to him: Behold, we have left all things and have followed thee; what therefore shall we have? And Jesus said to them:
Amen I say to you, that you who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess life everlasting. And many that are first shall be last, and the last first. And a little after: Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many. And somewhat after: Render therefore the things that are Caesar's to Caesar, and the things that are God's to God. And elsewhere:
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets. And after a few verses: Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have sat on the chair of Moses. All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do; but according to their works do ye not, for they say and do not. For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but with a finger of their own they will not move them. And all their works they do for to be seen of men.
For they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge their fringes. And they love the first places at feasts and the first chairs in the synagogues, and salutations in the market place, and to be called by men Rabbi. But be not you called Rabbi, for one is your master, and all you are brethren. And call none your father upon earth, for one is your Father, who is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters, for one is your master, Christ. He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. And a little after: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left the weightier things of the law:
Judgment and mercy and faith. These things you ought to have done, and not to leave those undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within you are full of rapine and all uncleanness. Blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside may become clean also. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you are like to whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear to men beautiful, but within are full of dead men's bones and of all filthiness. So you also outwardly indeed appear to men just, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, that build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the just, and say: If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the sons of them that killed the prophets; and fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. You serpents, generation of vipers, how will you flee from the judgment of hell? Therefore behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; and some of them you will put to death and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:
That upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just even to the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. And a little after: And because iniquity hath abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold; but he that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved. And somewhat after: Be ye also ready, because at what hour you know not the Son of man will come. Who, thinkest thou, is the faithful and wise servant whom his lord hath appointed over his family, to give them meat in season? Blessed is that servant whom, when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing.
Amen I say to you, he shall place him over all his goods. But if that evil servant shall say in his heart: My lord is long a-coming, and shall begin to strike his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken, the lord of that servant shall come in a day that he hopeth not, and at an hour that he knoweth not, and shall separate him, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And a little after: Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour. Again, after a little:
But when the Son of man shall come in his majesty, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit upon the seat of his majesty; and all nations shall be gathered together before him, and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats; and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; naked, and you covered me; sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me. Then shall the just answer him, saying:
Lord, when did we see thee hungry and fed thee, thirsty and gave thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and took thee in, or naked and covered thee? Or when did we see thee sick or in prison and came to thee? And the king answering shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry, and you gave me not to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me not to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me not in; naked, and you covered me not; sick and in prison, and you did not visit me. Then they also shall answer him, saying:
Lord, when did we see thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to thee? Then he shall answer them, saying: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it not to one of these least, neither did you do it to me. And these shall go into everlasting punishment, but the just into life everlasting. And somewhat after: Watch ye and pray, that ye enter not into temptation. XXVI. FROM THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK. And calling again the multitude unto him, he said to them: Hear me all, and understand. There is nothing from without a man that entering into him can defile him; but the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
And when he was come into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him the parable. And he said to them: So are you also without knowledge? Understand you not that everything from without entering into a man cannot defile him, because it entereth not into his heart but into the belly, and goeth out into the privy, purging all meats? But he said that the things which come out from a man, they defile a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man. And in another place: Having called the multitude together with his disciples, he said to them:
If any man will follow me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel shall save it. For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For he that shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man also will be ashamed of him when he shall come in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. And elsewhere: And taking a child, he set him in the midst of them; and when he had embraced him, he said to them:
Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me receiveth not me, but him that sent me. And a little after: For whosoever shall give you to drink a cup of water in my name, because you belong to Christ, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward. And whosoever shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea. And a little after: Have salt in you, and have peace among you. And a little after: And the Pharisees coming to him asked him: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. But he answering said to them: What did Moses command you? Who said:
Moses permitted to write a bill of divorce and to put her away. To whom Jesus answering said: Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you that precept; but from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they two shall be in one flesh. Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder. And in the house again his disciples asked him concerning the same thing. And he saith to them: Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her; and if the wife shall put away her husband and be married to another, she committeth adultery. And after four verses: Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not.
For the kingdom of God is for such. Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall not enter into it. And embracing them and laying his hands upon them, he blessed them. And when he was gone forth into the way, a certain man running up and kneeling before him asked him: Good master, what shall I do that I may receive life everlasting? And Jesus said to him: Why callest thou me good? None is good but one, God. Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery; do not kill; do not steal; bear not false witness; do no fraud; honour thy father and mother. But he answering said to him: Master, all these things I have observed from my youth. And Jesus, looking on him, loved him and said to him: One thing is wanting unto thee:
Go, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. Who, being struck sad at that saying, went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. And Jesus, looking round about, said to his disciples: How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus again answering, saith to them: Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Who wondered the more, saying among themselves: And who can be saved? And Jesus, looking on them, saith: With men it is impossible, but not with God:
For all things are possible with God. Peter began to say to him: Behold, we have left all things and have followed thee. Jesus answering said: Amen I say to you, there is no man who hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or lands for my sake and for the gospel, who shall not receive a hundred times as much now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions, and in the world to come life everlasting. But many that are first shall be last, and the last first. And a little after: You know that they who seem to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their princes have power over them. But it is not so among you:
But whosoever will be greater shall be your minister, and whosoever will be first among you shall be the servant of all. For the Son of man also is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many. And somewhat after: And Jesus answering saith to them: Have the faith of God. Amen I say to you, that whosoever shall say to this mountain: Be thou removed and cast into the sea! and shall not stagger in his heart, but believe that whatsoever he saith shall be done, it shall be done unto him. Therefore I say unto you, all things whatsoever you ask when you pray, believe that you shall receive, and they shall come unto you.
And when you shall stand to pray, forgive, if you have aught against any man, that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your sins. But if you will not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive you your sins. Again, somewhat after: And Jesus answering said to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And in another place: And there came one of the scribes that had heard them reasoning together, and seeing that he had answered them well, asked him which was the first commandment of all. And Jesus answered him: The first commandment of all is:
Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like to it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said to him: Well, master, thou hast said in truth that there is one God, and there is no other besides him; and that he should be loved with the whole heart, and with the whole understanding, and with the whole soul, and with the whole strength; and to love one's neighbour as oneself is a greater thing than all holocausts and sacrifices. And Jesus, seeing that he had answered wisely, said to him: Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.
And no man after that durst ask him any question. And a little after: Beware of the scribes, who love to walk in long robes, and to be saluted in the market place, and to sit in the first chairs in the synagogues, and to have the highest places at suppers; who devour the houses of widows under the pretence of long prayer: these shall receive greater judgment. And Jesus, sitting over against the treasury, beheld how the multitude cast money into the treasury; and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she cast in two mites, which make a farthing. And calling his disciples together, he saith to them: Amen I say to you, this poor widow hath cast in more than all they who have cast into the treasury. For all they cast in of their abundance, but she of her want cast in all that she
Had, she cast in, even all her living. And a little after: And when they shall lead you and deliver you up, be not thoughtful beforehand what you shall speak; but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye; for it is not you that speak, but the Holy Spirit. And a little after: And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake; but he that shall endure unto the end, he shall be saved. And in another place: Take heed, watch and pray; for you know not when the time is. Even as a man who, going into a far country, left his house, and gave authority to his servants over every work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore; for you know not when the lord of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning; lest, coming on a sudden, he find you sleeping.
But what I say to you, I say to all: Watch. XXVII. FROM THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will. And a little later: And the crowds asked him, saying, 'What then shall we do?' And he answered and said to them, 'He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.' Now the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, 'Master, what shall we do?' And he said to them, 'Exact nothing more than what is appointed to you.' And soldiers also asked him, saying, 'And what shall we do?' And he said to them, 'Do not shake anyone down, nor bring false accusation; and be content with your wages.' And after a while:
Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who now hunger, for you shall be filled. Blessed are you who now weep, for you shall laugh. Blessed shall you be when men hate you, and when they separate you and reproach you and cast out your name as evil for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy: for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have your consolation. Woe to you who are filled, for you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. Woe to you when all men speak well of you: for so their fathers did to the prophets. But I say to you who hear:
Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who falsely accuse you. And to him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from him who takes away what is yours, do not ask it back. And as you wish that men should do to you, do likewise to them. And if you love those who love you, what thanks do you have? For sinners also love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do you have? Since sinners do this also. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what thanks do you have?
For sinners also lend to sinners, in order to receive as much again. But rather love your enemies: do good and lend, hoping for nothing in return: and your reward shall be great, and you shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind toward the ungrateful and the evil. Be therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven. Give, and it shall be given to you: good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall they give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you have measured, it shall be measured again to you. And he told them also a parable: 'Can the blind lead the blind? Do they not both fall into the pit?'
The disciple is not above the master: but everyone shall be perfect as his master. Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the beam that is in your own eye? And how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me cast out the speck from your eye,' when you yourself do not see the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite, first cast out the beam from your own eye, and then you shall see clearly to take out the speck from your brother's eye. For a good tree does not bear evil fruit, nor a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor harvest grapes from a bramble. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good, and the evil man out of the evil brings forth evil.
For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. And why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things I say? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you to whom he is like. He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation upon rock. And when a flood arose, the river burst against that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon rock. But he who hears and does not do is like a man building his house upon the earth without a foundation: against which the river burst, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great. And after a while: To what then shall I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like?
They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying, 'We piped to you with flutes and you did not dance; we mourned and you did not weep.' For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' The Son of man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold a glutton and a wine-drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' And wisdom is justified by all her children. Likewise after a while: Now this is the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those beside the way are they who hear: then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, lest believing they should be saved.
For those on the rock are they who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are those who heard, and going away are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and bring forth no fruit. But that which fell on good ground are those who, hearing the word with a good and excellent heart, hold it fast and bring forth fruit with patience. No one who lights a lamp covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it upon a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that shall not be made manifest, nor anything concealed that shall not be known and come into the open. Take heed therefore how you hear.
For to him who has, it shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken from him. And after a while: Then having called together the twelve apostles, he gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick, and said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey, neither staff nor bag nor bread nor money; nor have two tunics. And into whatever house you enter, there remain, and do not depart from there. And whoever does not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet for a testimony against them.' Likewise after a while: And he said to all:
