18:1
And this man has left us very many memoirs of an educated mind devoted to divine things, full of all profit, to which we shall refer those who love learning, having usefully indicated those that have come to our knowledge.
One of them is his address on behalf of our doctrines to Antoninus surnamed the Pious, and to his children, and to the Roman Senate; another contains a second Apology on behalf of our faith, which he made to the successor and namesake of the aforesaid emperor, Antoninus Verus, whose times we are now treating.
And there is another, addressed to the Greeks, in which, after extending a long argument concerning very many things inquired into both among us and among the philosophers of the Greeks, he treats of the nature of demons; concerning which there would be no urgency to quote anything at present.
And again another work of his against the Greeks has come down to us, which he also entitled A Refutation; and besides these, another concerning the Sovereignty of God, which he establishes not only from our own Scriptures but also from the books of the Greeks.
After these, a work entitled Psaltes, and another scholastic treatise On the Soul, in which, having put forward various questions concerning the problem under discussion, he sets forth the opinions of the philosophers among the Greeks, which he promises also to refute, and to set out his own opinion in another work.
He also composed a dialogue against the Jews, which he held in the city of Ephesus against Trypho, the most distinguished Hebrew of that day; in which he sets forth in what manner the divine grace urged him on to the word of faith, and what zeal he had formerly brought to philosophic studies, and how earnest a search after the truth he made.
And in the same work he relates concerning the Jews, how they contrived a plot against the teaching of Christ, directing these very words against Trypho: 「You not only did not repent of the evils you did, but at that time you chose out picked men and sent them from Jerusalem into all the earth, saying that a godless sect of Christians had appeared, and recounting those things which all who do not know us say against us; so that you are the cause of unrighteousness not only to yourselves, but also to absolutely all other men.」
He writes too that even down to his own time prophetic gifts shone in the church. And he makes mention also of the Apocalypse of John, plainly saying that it is the work of the apostle. He also recalls certain prophetic sayings, convicting Trypho on the ground that the Jews had cut them out of the Scripture. And very many other of his labours are extant among many brethren.
So worthy of study did this man's words seem even to the ancients, that Irenaeus quotes his sayings—this once in the fourth book Against the Heresies, where he adds these very words: 「And Justin well says, in his treatise against Marcion, that he would not have believed the Lord himself had he proclaimed another God beside the Creator」; and this again in the fifth book of the same work, through these words: 「And Justin well said that before the coming of the Lord Satan never dared to blaspheme God, inasmuch as he did not yet know his condemnation.」
And these things have been said of necessity, for the encouragement of those who love learning, that they may zealously give heed to his words. Such, then, were the things concerning this man.
