Τοῦ δὲ Θεοφίλου, ὃν τῆς Ἀντιοχέων ἐκκλησίας ἐπίσκοπον δεδηλώκαμεν, τρία τὰ πρὸς Αὐτόλυκον στοιχειώδη φέρεται συγγράμματα, καὶ ἄλλο πρὸς τὴν αἵρεσιν Ἑρμογένους τὴν ἐπιγραφὴν ἔχον , ἐν ᾧ ἐκ τῆς ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰωάννου κέχρηται μαρτυρίαις , καὶ ἕτερα δέ τινα κατηχητικὰ αὐτοῦ βιβλία. τῶν γε μὴν αἱρετικῶν οὐδὲν χεῖρον καὶ τότε, ζιζανίων δίκην, λυμαινομένων τὸν εἰλικρινῆ τῆς ἀποστολικῆς διδασκαλίας σπόρον , οἱ πανταχόσε τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν ποιμένες ὥσπερ τινὰς θῆρας ἀγρίους τῶν Χριστοῦ προβάτων ἀποσοβοῦντες αὐτοὺς ἀνεῖργον , τοτὲ μὲν ταῖς πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς νουθεσίαις καὶ παραινέσεσι, τοτὲ δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς γυμνότερον ἀποδυόμενοι , ἀγράφοις τε εἰς πρόσωπον ζητήσεσι καὶ ἀνατροπαῖς , ἤδη δὲ καὶ δι ἐγγράφων ὑπομνημάτων τὰς δόξας αὐτῶν ἀκριβεστάτοις ἐλέγχοις διευθύνοντες. ὅ γέ τοι Θεόφιλος σὺν τοῖς ἄλλοις κατὰ τούτων στρατευσάμενος δῆλός ἐστιν ἀπό τινος οὐκ ἀγεννῶς αὐτῷ κατὰ Μαρκίωνος πεπονημένου λόγου, ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς μεθ ὧν ἄλλων εἰρήκαμεν εἰσέτι νῦν διασέσωσται. τοῦτον μὲν οὖν ἕβδομος ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποστόλων τῆς Ἀντιοχέων ἐκκλησίας διαδέχεται Μαξιμῖνος.
Of Theophilus, whom we have shown to be bishop of the church of the Antiochians, there are extant three elementary works To Autolycus, and another bearing the title Against the Heresy of Hermogenes, in which he uses testimonies from the Apocalypse of John; and certain other catechetical books of his. And since at that time too the heretics, like tares, were no less corrupting the pure seed of the apostolic teaching, the shepherds of the churches everywhere drove them off and held them back, as it were certain wild beasts, from the sheep of Christ—now by admonitions and exhortations to the brethren, now by stripping for the contest against them more openly, by unwritten inquiries and refutations face to face, and now also through written memoirs setting straight their opinions with most exact proofs. Theophilus, at any rate, is plainly one who campaigned against them along with the others, from a certain work composed by him not ignobly against Marcion, which together with the others we have mentioned is preserved even to this day. And him Maximinus succeeds as the seventh from the apostles in the church of the Antiochians.
