← ch. 14ch. 16 →
15:1
And Jesus, seeing the multitudes, went up into the mountain;
耶穌看見這許多的人,就上了山;
15:2
and when He had sat down, His disciples came unto Him.
And He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
αʹ
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
15:5
Observe how free from ostentation and vainglory it is.
For He did not lead them about with Himself; but when there was need to heal, He Himself went about everywhere, visiting both cities and country regions;
因為祂並沒有帶著他們四處巡行,反倒是當需要醫治的時候,祂親自到處奔走,遍訪各城各鄉;
15:7
but when a great multitude was gathered, He seats Himself in one place;
然而當大批的群眾聚集時,祂卻在一個地方坐下;
15:8
and not in a city or in the midst of a marketplace, but on a mountain and in a solitude, teaching us to do nothing for display, and to withdraw from the tumults in the midst of men—and this most of all when we must pursue wisdom and discourse concerning necessary matters.
Now when He had gone up and sat down, the disciples came unto Him.
Do you see their advance in virtue, and how of a sudden they became better? For the many were spectators of the miracles;
你看見他們在美德上的長進,以及他們如何驟然變得更好嗎?因為眾人不過是神蹟的觀看者;
15:11
but these longed to hear something further, great and lofty;
但這些人卻渴望聽見更深、又大又高的道理;
15:12
which very thing indeed impelled Him to His teaching, and made Him begin these discourses.
He did not heal only, but also set souls aright, and again He passed from the care of these to the healing of those, at once diversifying the benefit, and mingling with the teaching of words the demonstration from works, and stopping the shameless mouths of the heretics, whereby He showed His care for either substance, proving that He is Himself the Creator of the whole living being.
Wherefore also He imparted much providence to each nature, now setting right the one, now the other.
For He opened, it says, His mouth and taught them.
And for what reason is it added, He opened His mouth? That you may learn that He instructed even in silence, not only by speaking; but now opening His mouth, now sending forth the voice that comes from His works.
But when you hear that He taught them, think not that He conversed with the disciples alone, but also, through them, with all men.
For since the multitude was of the common sort, and moreover of those that grovel on the ground, He set the band of the disciples before Him and directs His words to them, in His discourse to them making the teaching of true wisdom unburdensome for all the rest as well, even for those who fell far short of what was spoken.
This very thing indeed Luke also hinted at when he said that He turned His discourse toward them;
路加也正是暗指這件事,說祂把話轉向他們;
15:20
and Matthew too, making this same thing plain, wrote that His disciples came unto Him, and He taught them.
For thus also the rest were likely to give heed more eagerly than if He had addressed Himself to all.
Whence, then, does He begin, and what foundations does He lay for us of the new polity? Let us hearken with exactness to the things spoken;
那麼,祂從何處起頭,又為我們立下這新生活方式的哪些根基呢?讓我們留心細聽所講的話;
15:23
for they were spoken to those men, but were written also for the sake of all that come after.
For this cause, indeed, in His public discourse He gave heed to the disciples;
誠然,正是為此緣故,祂在公開講論時特別顧到門徒;
15:25
yet He does not restrict the things spoken to them, but without distinction sets forth all the beatitudes.
For neither did He say, Blessed are you, if you become poor, but, Blessed are the poor.
And yet, even had He addressed those men, the counsel would have become common to all.
Lo, I am with you always, even unto the consummation of the age—
He does not converse with those men alone, but also through them with the whole inhabited world;
祂並非單與那些人交談,乃是藉著他們與普天下的人交談;
15:30
and when He calls them blessed as being persecuted and driven out and suffering things unbearable, it is not for them alone, but for all who accomplish the same things, that He weaves the crown.
Yet, that this may become even clearer, and that you may learn that the things spoken have much in common with you, and with the whole of human nature—if one be willing to give heed—hear how He begins these wondrous words.
«Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.»
What is the meaning of «the poor in spirit»? They are the humble and those contrite in mind.
For here by «spirit» He means the soul and the deliberate purpose of the will.
For since there are many who are humble, not willingly, but constrained by the necessity of their circumstances, He passes over these (for this would be no praise), and pronounces blessed first of all those who abase and restrain themselves out of deliberate choice.
And why did He not say «the humble», but «the poor»? Because this is more than that.
For here He means those who are crouched down in awe, and who tremble at the commandments of God — those whom God, greatly approving of them through the prophet Isaiah, spoke of, saying:
«Upon whom shall I look, but upon him that is meek and quiet, and that trembleth at My words?» 2.
For indeed the modes of humble-mindedness are many;
因為謙卑的方式原是多樣的;
15:40
and one man is humble in due measure, but another with all excess. It is this latter humility that the blessed prophet also praises — not sketching for us the mind that is merely composed and subdued, but that which is utterly broken — in the words by which he says:
«The sacrifice for God is a broken spirit; a broken and a humbled heart God will not despise.»
And the three children, too, offer this to God in place of a great sacrifice, saying:
«But in a contrite soul and a spirit of humility may we be accepted.»
This same humility Christ also pronounces blessed now.
15:45
For since the greatest of
evils, which have laid waste the whole world, entered in through senseless pride;
眾惡,就是那毀壞了全世界的,乃是藉著狂妄自大而進來的;
15:47
for the devil, who was not such before this, became a devil in this very way;
因為魔鬼在此之先本非如此,牠就是這樣成了魔鬼;
15:48
which very thing Paul also made plain when he said:
«Lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil»;
「恐怕他自高自大,就落在魔鬼所受的刑罰裡」;
15:50
and the first man, being puffed up by the devil with these same hopes, was hurled down headlong and became mortal;
頭一個人也是被魔鬼用這同樣的指望所吹脹,以致栽倒墜落,成了必死的;
15:51
for looking to become a god, he lost even that which he had;
因為他妄想成為神,反倒連他所有的也失去了;
15:52
which is why God, reproaching him and mocking his folly, said:
«Behold, Adam is become as one of us.»
And each one of those after this drifted into impiety from this same source, imagining himself equal to God;
此後的每一個人,也都由此陷入不敬虔,妄想與神同等;
15:55
since therefore this was the citadel of evils, the root and the fountain of all wickedness, in preparing the remedy suited to the disease, He first laid down this law as a strong and secure foundation.
For when this is laid beneath, the builder sets all the rest upon it with safety;
因為這根基一旦奠定,建造者便可穩妥地將其餘一切加建其上;
15:57
but when this is removed, even though a man in his manner of life should reach as far as the heavens, all is easily swept away and turns to a grievous end.
Though you should gather fasting, prayer, almsgiving, temperance, or any other good thing whatsoever, without humble-mindedness it all runs to waste and perishes.
Which very thing happened also in the case of the Pharisee.
For even after reaching the very summit, he came down having lost everything, because he did not possess the mother of good things.
For just as pride is the fountain of all vice, so humble-mindedness is the beginning of all true wisdom.
Therefore He begins from this very point, plucking up arrogance by the very root out of the soul of His hearers.
And what has this to do with the disciples, one may say, who were humble in every respect? For they had no occasion for pride, being fishermen and poor men, obscure and unlearned.
Even if these words were not addressed to the disciples, yet they were at least addressed to those then present, and to those who were afterwards to receive them, that they might not on this account despise them;
即使這些話不是對門徒說的,至少也是對當時在場的人,以及日後要接待門徒的人說的,免得他們因此輕看門徒;
15:65
or rather, they were addressed to the disciples also.
For even if not then, yet later they were going to need this benefit — after the signs and the wonders, and the honour paid them by the whole world, and their boldness before God.
For neither wealth, nor dominion, nor royalty itself was so able to lift a man up, as those things which fell to their lot.
And apart from this, it was likely that even then, before the signs, they should be lifted up, when they saw the multitude and that great throng surrounding their Teacher, and should experience some human feeling.
For this reason He at once represses their pride of mind.
And He does not introduce what He says in the manner of exhortations and commandments, but in the manner of a blessing, making His word less burdensome, and opening the arena of His teaching to all.
For He did not say, «This man and that man», but «Blessed are all they that do these things.»
So that even if you be a slave, or poor, or needy, or a stranger, or unlearned, there is nothing to hinder you from being blessed, if you emulate this virtue.
Having begun therefore from this point, where it was most fitting, He proceeds to another commandment, which seems to be opposed to the verdict of the whole world.
For while all men count those who rejoice to be enviable, but those in dejection, poverty, and mourning to be wretched, He, in their stead, pronounces these last to be blessed, saying thus:
And yet all men count them miserable.
For this reason He first wrought the signs beforehand, that in laying down such laws He might be worthy of credence.
And here again He has not simply set down those that mourn, but those who do this over their sins;
在這裡祂也不是單單指那哀哭的人,乃是指那為自己罪過而哀哭的人;
15:78
since that other kind, to lament over some worldly thing, is even exceedingly forbidden.
Which very thing Paul also made plain, saying that «the sorrow of the world worketh death»;
保羅所指明的正是這事,他說:「世俗的憂愁是叫人死」;
15:80
«but that which is according to God worketh repentance unto salvation not to be repented of.»
It is these, then, that He too here pronounces blessed — those who sorrow in this way;
所以祂在此所稱為有福的,也正是這些如此憂傷的人;
15:82
and He has not set down simply those who sorrow, but those who do so with intensity.
For this reason He did not say, «They that are sorrowful», but «They that mourn.»
For this commandment, too, is again a teacher of all true wisdom.
For if those who mourn for children, or a wife, or any other of their kindred who has departed, are not, during
that season of grief, in love with riches or with bodily pleasures, do not aspire after glory, are not provoked by insults, are not taken captive by envy, nor besieged by any other passion, being wholly given over to mourning alone;
那哀痛的時候,既不貪愛錢財,也不貪戀肉體的享樂,不追求虛榮,不因受辱而動怒,不被嫉妒所擄,也不被別的情慾所圍困,只全然沉浸在哀傷之中;
15:87
much more will those who mourn their own sins, as is worthy of mourning, display a wisdom greater than this.
Then, what is the reward for them? «That they shall be comforted», He says.
15:89
Where shall they be comforted? tell me.
For since the commandment was very heavy and burdensome, that which most of all made it light — this He promised to give.
So that if you wish to be comforted, mourn.
And do not think that what has been said is a riddle.
For when God comforts, even if ten thousand storms of sorrows come upon you, you shall be higher than them all.
For indeed God always gives rewards far greater than the toils;
因為神所賜的報償,總是遠超過那勞苦的;
15:95
which very thing He has done here also, in declaring those that mourn to be blessed — not according to the worth of the deed, but according to His own loving-kindness.
For those who mourn, mourn over their transgressions;
因為那哀慟的人,是為自己的過犯哀慟;
15:97
and for such it is enough to enjoy pardon and to obtain acquittal.
But since He Himself is exceedingly loving toward mankind, He does not make His recompense to stand merely in the removal of punishments nor in the deliverance from sins, but He even makes them blessed and imparts to them much comfort.
And He bids us mourn not only over our own transgressions, but also over those of others;
祂也吩咐我們不但要為自己的過犯哀慟,也要為別人的過犯哀慟;
15:100
such were the souls of the saints;
眾聖徒的心正是這樣;
15:101
such was the soul of Paul, and of David.
For indeed these too have often mourned over the calamities of others.
'Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.'
For nowhere in the Scripture do we find a spiritual, intelligible earth.
But what then is meant by this saying? He sets forth a perceptible reward, just as Paul also does.
For having said, 'Honour thy father and thy mother,' he added, 'For so shalt thou be long-lived upon the earth.'
And He Himself again said to the thief:
'Today shalt thou be with Me in paradise.'
For He urges them on not only by the good things to come, but also by those that are present, for the sake of the grosser among His hearers, who even before the things to come are seeking after these.
For this reason indeed, as He went on, He also said:
'Be well-disposed toward thine adversary.'
Then He sets forth the reward of such love of wisdom, and says:
'Lest the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge to the officer.'
Seest thou whence He inspired fear? From perceptible things, from what happens right at our feet.
'Whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council.'
And Paul too abounds in setting forth perceptible rewards, and in urging men on by present things;
保羅也大量地設立可感知的獎賞,並以現世之事勸勉眾人;
15:117
as, for instance, when he discourses concerning virginity;
例如,當他論到守童身的事時;
15:118
for saying there nothing about the heavens, he for the time being draws them on from present considerations, saying:
15:119
'Because of the present distress;'
15:120
and, 'But I spare you;'
and, 'But I would have you to be without carefulness.'
Thus indeed did Christ also mingle perceptible things with spiritual.
For since the meek man is thought to lose all that is his own, He promises the contrary, saying that this is rather the man who possesses his goods in security—he who is neither insolent nor boastful;
因為溫柔的人被認為會失去他一切所有的,於是祂應許了相反的事,說:這人反倒是穩妥地擁有其所有的,就是那不魯莽、不誇口的人;
15:124
whereas such a bold man will often be dispossessed even of his ancestral inheritance, and of his very soul.
And in another way too: since in the Old Testament the Prophet continually said, 'For the meek shall inherit the earth,' He weaves His discourse out of words familiar to them, so as not everywhere to speak in an alien tongue.
But He says these things not confining the recompenses to present things, but with these bestowing also those others.
For whether He speak of some spiritual thing, He does not take away the things in the present life;
因為無論祂論到某件屬靈之事,祂都不奪去今生的事物;
15:128
or whether again He promise something of the things in this life, He does not confine the promise to that alone.
'For seek ye,' saith He, 'the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added unto you;'
'Whosoever hath forsaken houses, or brethren, shall receive a hundredfold in this world, and in the world to come shall inherit eternal life.'
'Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness.'
What manner of righteousness? Either He means virtue as a whole, or that particular virtue which stands opposed to covetousness.
For since He is about to give commandment concerning almsgiving, showing
how one ought to show mercy—namely, that it be not out of rapine nor out of covetousness—He pronounces blessed those who lay claim to righteousness.
And observe with how great an emphasis He sets it forth.
For He said not, 'Blessed are they that hold fast to righteousness,' but, 'Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness;'
因為祂沒有說「持守義的人有福了」,而是說「飢渴慕義的人有福了」;
15:137
that we may pursue it not carelessly, but with all desire.
For since this is especially the property of covetousness, and we do not so love meats and drinks as the acquiring and encompassing of more,
He commanded us to transfer this desire to the not being covetous.
Then again He appoints a perceptible reward, saying:
For because covetousness is thought to make the multitude wealthy, He says that on the contrary it is quite otherwise;
因為貪婪被認為能使眾人富足,祂便說事實恰恰相反;
15:142
for it is righteousness that works this.
Therefore, in doing what is just, fear not poverty, neither tremble at famine.
For they that snatch away, these especially are the men that fall from everything;
因為那些搶奪的人,正是那從一切之中跌落、盡都喪失的人;
15:145
whereas he that loves righteousness possesses all men's goods in security.
But if they that covet not other men's goods enjoy so great abundance, much more do they that give away their own.
Here He seems to me to mean not only those who show mercy by money, but also those who do so by deeds.
For manifold is the manner of mercy, and this commandment is broad.
What then is its reward? 'That they themselves shall obtain mercy.'
And it seems indeed to be a kind of equal recompense;
這看來似乎是某種對等的回報;
15:151
but it is far greater than the good deed.
For they themselves show mercy as men, but they obtain mercy from the God of all.
And human mercy and divine are not equal, but as great as is the interval between wickedness and goodness, so far is the one distant from the other.
'Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.'
Behold again a spiritual reward.
And by 'pure' here He means either those who have acquired virtue as a whole and are conscious of no evil in themselves, or those who live in chastity;
祂在此所說的「清」,或是指那些擁有全備德行、自覺心中並無邪惡的人,或是指那些過著貞潔生活的人;
15:157
for of nothing have we so much need, in order to see God, as of this virtue.
15:158
Wherefore Paul also said:
'Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.'
But by 'sight' He here means such as it is possible for man to see.
For since many show mercy, and do not snatch away, nor covet, yet commit fornication and act licentiously,
showing that the former does not suffice, He added this also.
Which very thing Paul also testified of the Macedonians, when writing to the Corinthians, that not only did they abound in almsgiving, but also in the rest of virtue;
這正是保羅寫信給哥林多人時,為馬其頓人所作的見證,就是他們不但在施捨上富足,也在其餘的德行上富足;
15:164
for having spoken of their liberality in money, he says that they also 'gave their own selves to the Lord and to us.'
Here He takes away not only their being at strife and hating one another, but He requires yet something more—that we should also bring together others that are at strife;
在此,祂不僅除去他們彼此爭鬥、彼此仇恨,更要求某種更進一層的事,就是我們也當把那些爭鬥的別人使他們和好;
15:166
and again He brings in a spiritual reward.
What manner of reward is this? 'That they themselves shall be called sons of God.'
For indeed this was the work of the Only-Begotten: to bring together the things that were divided, and to reconcile the things that were at war.
Then, lest thou shouldest think that peace is in every case a good thing, He added:
'Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness' sake;'
that is, for virtue's sake, for the protection of others, for godliness.
For He is accustomed always to call the whole moral discipline of the soul 'righteousness.'
Blessed are you when they reproach you and persecute you, and speak every evil word against you falsely, for My sake.
As if to say: Even should they call you sorcerers, deceivers, pests, or anything else whatsoever, blessed are you, He says.
What could be more novel than these commands, when He declares that the very things which others flee from are to be longed for?
I mean being poor, and mourning, and being persecuted, and being ill spoken of. Yet nonetheless He both spoke it and persuaded, not two or ten or twenty or a hundred or a thousand men, but the whole inhabited world.
And hearing things burdensome and grievous and contrary to the custom of the many, the crowds were astounded.
So great was the power of Him who spoke.
But lest you should suppose that being ill spoken of simply makes men blessed, He set down two conditions: when it is both for His sake, and...
For unless these are present, not only is the one ill spoken of not blessed, but he is even wretched.
Then behold the reward once again:
For your reward is great in the heavens.
But you, even if you do not hear the kingdom bestowed at each one of the beatitudes, do not be disheartened.
For though He names the recompenses variously, yet He leads them all into the kingdom.
For indeed when He says, The mourners shall be comforted, and the merciful shall obtain mercy, and the pure in heart shall see God, and the peacemakers shall be called sons of God, He hints at nothing else through all these than the kingdom.
For those who enjoy these things shall by all means attain to that kingdom.
Do not therefore think that the reward belongs only to the poor in spirit, but also to those who hunger after righteousness, and to the meek, and to all the rest without exception.
For this reason He placed the blessing upon all of them, that you might look for nothing perceptible by the senses.
For he could not be blessed who is crowned in those things which are dissolved together with the present life, and pass by more swiftly than a shadow.
And having said, For your reward is great, He added yet another consolation, saying:
For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
For since that other thing, the matter of the kingdom, was yet to come and lay in the realm of hope, He hence furnishes them consolation from their fellowship with those who suffered ill before them.
Do not suppose, He says, that it is because you speak and legislate things contrary that you suffer these things;
祂說:你們不要以為,你們是因所講、所立的道理與眾不同,才遭受這些事的;
15:194
or that, being teachers of wicked doctrines, you are about to be driven out by them.
For the plots and dangers arise not from the wickedness of the things spoken, but from the malice of those who hear.
Hence they do not even slander you who suffer ill, but those men who do the ill.
And all the time before bears witness to these things.
For it was not by charging the prophets with lawlessness and a God-opposing mind that they stoned some, drove out others, and encompassed others with countless other evils.
Let not this therefore trouble you;
所以不要讓這事攪擾你們;
15:200
for it is from the very same disposition that they now do all these things also.
Do you see how He raised up their spirits, setting them near to those around Moses and Elijah? So also Paul, writing to the Thessalonians, says:
For you became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea.
For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Jews, who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and please not God, and are contrary to all men.
This very thing Christ here also established.
And in the case of the other beatitudes He said, Blessed are the poor, and the merciful;
在其他的福分上,祂說:虛心的人有福了,憐憫人的人有福了;
15:206
but here He did not set it down indefinitely, but turns His word directly to them, saying:
Blessed are you when they reproach you and persecute you, and speak every evil word;
「當人辱罵你們、逼迫你們、說各樣的壞話,你們就有福了」;
15:208
showing that this is especially their distinction, and that above all other teachers this is peculiar to them.
And at the same time He hints here also at His own dignity, and His equality of honor with Him who begot Him.
For just as they suffered these things for the Father's sake, He says, so also you shall suffer them for My sake.
And when He says, The prophets who were before you, He shows that they too had already become prophets.
Then, making clear that this above all benefits them and makes them illustrious, He did not say, They will indeed speak ill of you and persecute you, but I will prevent this;
然後,為要表明這事最能使他們得益處、使他們榮耀,祂並沒有說:他們固然要辱罵你們、逼迫你們,但我要攔阻這事;
15:213
for He wills their security to consist not in not being ill spoken of, but in nobly bearing being ill spoken of, and in refuting them by their deeds;
因為祂所要的,是叫他們的穩妥不在於不被辱罵,乃在於高尚地忍受辱罵,並藉著行為駁倒那些人;
15:214
for this is far greater than that;
因為這遠比那一樣更為偉大;
15:215
just as for one who is struck to suffer nothing grievous is far greater than not to be struck.
Here then He says that Your reward is great in the heavens;
所以在這裡祂說:你們在天上的賞賜是大的;
15:217
but Luke says that He spoke this both more emphatically and with fuller consolation.
For He does not only pronounce blessed those who are ill spoken of for God's sake, but also calls wretched those who are well spoken of by all;
因為祂不僅稱那些為神的緣故被辱罵的人為有福,也稱那些被眾人稱讚的人為可憐;
15:219
For woe to you, He says, when all men speak well of you.
And yet they spoke well of the apostles too;
然而人也曾稱讚過使徒;
15:221
For this reason He did not say, When men speak well of you,
should men speak well of you, but, When all men.
For it is not possible that those who live in virtue should be well spoken of by all.
When they cast out your name as evil, rejoice and leap for joy.
For not only for the dangers which they endured, but also for the evil-speaking, He appoints a great recompense.
For this reason He did not say, When they drive you out and kill you, but, When they reproach you, and speak every evil thing.
For evil-speakings sting more grievously than the deeds themselves.
For in dangers there are many things that lighten the pain;
因為在危險之中,有許多事可以減輕痛苦;
15:229
such as being encouraged by all, having many to applaud and crown and proclaim you;
譬如受眾人的激勵,有許多人為你鼓掌、加冠、傳揚;
15:230
but here, in the case of evil-speaking, even this consolation is taken away.
For the good deed does not seem to be anything great, and it stings the one who contends more than the dangers do.
Many at least have come even to the noose, not being able to bear an evil reputation.
And why do you marvel at other men? For that betrayer, the shameless and abominable one, who cast off all sense of shame utterly toward everything, this above all is what drove him to hang himself.
And Job too, that adamant, harder than rock, when his possessions were taken away and he suffered irremediable calamities, and was suddenly bereft of his children, and saw his body gushing forth a fountain of worms, and his wife pressing upon him, bore all these things easily;
還有約伯,那如金鋼石般、比磐石更堅硬的人,當他的財物被奪去、遭受無可挽回的災禍、忽然喪盡兒女、看見自己的身體湧出蟲蛆的泉源、又有妻子在旁逼迫他的時候,他都輕易地承受了這一切;
15:235
but when he saw his friends reproaching him and trampling upon him, and holding an evil opinion of him, and saying that he suffered these things for his sins and was paying the penalty for his wickedness;
然而當他看見朋友們辱罵他、踐踏他、對他持有惡劣的看法,說他遭受這些是因為犯了罪、是為自己的惡行受刑罰的時候;
15:236
then he was troubled, then that noble and great man was thrown into confusion.
And David too, letting go of all that he had suffered, sought from God a recompense for the evil-speaking alone;
還有大衛,也撇下他所受的一切,單單為那毀謗向神求報應;
15:238
For let him curse, he says, because the Lord has bidden him, that the Lord may look upon my affliction, and repay me good for the cursing of this day.
And Paul too proclaims not only those who are in danger, nor those who are stripped of their possessions, but these also, speaking thus:
Call to mind the former days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great contest of sufferings;
「你們要追念往日,蒙了光照以後,忍受了大爭戰般的許多苦難;
15:241
partly made a spectacle by reproaches and afflictions.
It is for this very reason that Christ has appointed a great reward.
Here you do not defend yourself, nor do you stop up their mouths, and there you are given a reward? He set the prophets before them, showing that not even there did God take vengeance on their behalf.
But if, in those days when the recompense was close at hand, He anointed them for the struggle by the promise of things to come,
how much more now, when this hope has become clearer and the philosophy of life greater.
But consider, too, after how many commandments He has placed this one.
For He did not set it down at random, but to make clear that it is impossible for one who has not been furnished and trained by all those preceding virtues to go forth to these contests.
For this reason, always paving the way from the former commandment to the one that follows, He has woven for us a kind of golden chain.
For he who is humble will surely also mourn his own sins;
因為謙卑的人,必然也要為自己的罪過哀慟;
15:250
he who mourns will be both meek and just and merciful;
哀慟的人,也必溫柔、公義、憐憫;
15:251
he who is merciful and just and contrite of heart will assuredly also be pure in heart; and such a one—
he who has achieved all these things will also be arrayed against dangers, and will not be shaken when he hears himself reviled and suffers countless terrors.
Having therefore exhorted them to what was fitting, He again gives them respite with words of praise.
For since the injunctions were lofty and far greater than those in the Old Covenant, lest they be troubled and dismayed and say:
'How shall we be able to accomplish these things?'—hear what He says:
'You are the salt of the earth';
「你們是世上的鹽」;
15:257
showing that He enjoins these things of necessity.
For your responsibility, He says, will be not for your own life alone, but for the whole inhabited world.
For I am not sending you to two cities, or ten, or twenty, nor to a single nation, as I sent the prophets, but to land and sea and the whole inhabited world—and that in a wretched condition.
For by saying, 'You are the salt of the earth,' He showed that all human nature had become insipid and was rotted through by its sins.
For this reason He requires of them precisely those virtues which are
most necessary and useful for the care of the many.
For the man who is meek and forbearing and merciful and just does not shut up his good deeds within himself alone, but takes care that these fair springs should overflow also for the benefit of others.
And again, he who is pure in heart and a peacemaker, and is persecuted for the truth's sake, likewise orders his life for the common good.
'Do not therefore suppose,' He says, 'that you are being dragged into ordinary contests, or that your responsibility is for some small matters:
You are the salt of the earth.'
What then? Did they themselves set right what was corrupted? By no means.
For it is not possible to benefit things already utterly ruined by sprinkling salt upon them;
因為對那已然朽爛的東西撒上鹽,是不能使之得益的;
15:269
but only after they had first been renewed and delivered over to them, and freed from that foul stench, did they then salt them, holding and preserving them in that freshness which they had received from the Master.
For the deliverance from the rottenness of sins was Christ's achievement;
因為脫離罪惡的腐爛,乃是基督所成就的;
15:271
but again, the not returning any more to that state was the work of these men's own diligence and toil.
Do you see how, little by little, He shows them to be even better than the prophets? For He says they are teachers not of Palestine, but of all the earth;
你看見祂如何漸漸指明他們甚至勝過眾先知嗎?因為祂說他們不是巴勒斯坦一地的教師,乃是全地的教師;
15:273
and not simply teachers, but even awe-inspiring ones.
For this indeed is the marvel: that not by flattering or fawning, but by biting like salt, they became so beloved by all.
'Do not therefore marvel,' He says, 'if, leaving the others aside, I converse with you and draw you into so many dangers.'
'For consider to how many cities and peoples and nations I am about to send you as overseers.'
'For this reason I would have you be not only prudent yourselves, but able to make others such as well.'
And such men must be exceedingly wise, in whose hands lies the salvation of others, and must possess so great an abundance of virtue as to impart the benefit to others also.
For if you do not become such, you will not even suffice for yourselves.
Do not, therefore, be indignant, as though the things being said were burdensome.
For while it is possible for the rest, who have become insipid, to be restored through you,
因為其餘那些已然失味的人,尚可藉著你們得以復原;
15:282
you, if you should suffer this, will destroy others along with yourselves.
So that in proportion as you are entrusted with great matters, so much the greater diligence do you need.
'But if the salt should lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden underfoot by men.'
For the rest, though they fall ten thousand times, are able to obtain pardon;
因為其餘的人縱然跌倒千萬次,仍能蒙赦免;
15:286
but the teacher, if he suffers this, is stripped of every defence, and shall pay the utmost penalty.
For lest, hearing, 'When they reproach you and persecute you, and speak every evil word against you,' they should be afraid to come forth into the midst, He says that unless you are arrayed against these things, you were chosen in vain.
For it is not being ill spoken of that one must dread, but rather being seen to play the hypocrite along with them;
因為當懼怕的,並非被人惡言相待,乃是被看出與他們一同假冒為善;
15:289
for then you will lose your savour and be trodden underfoot.
But if you continue to bite them with your sharpness, and are then ill spoken of, rejoice.
For this is the work of salt: to sting and to grieve the dissolute.
So that the evil-speaking follows of necessity, in no way harming you, but rather bearing witness to your firmness.
But if, fearing it, you should betray the vehemence that befits you, you shall suffer things far more grievous, being both ill spoken of and despised by all.
For this is what it means to be trodden underfoot.
Then He leads them on to another, more exalted illustration:
'You are the light of the world.'
Again, of the world—not of one nation, nor of twenty cities, but of the whole inhabited earth;
又是「世上」的——不是一個民族,也不是二十座城,乃是整個天下;
15:298
and a light that is spiritual, far better than this visible ray, just as the salt too was spiritual.
And first salt, and then light;
並且先說鹽,然後才說光;
15:300
that you may learn how great is the gain of astringent words, and the profit of grave instruction.
For it binds tight and does not allow one to dissolve away, and it makes one see clearly, leading him by the hand toward virtue.
'A city set on a mountain cannot be hid;
「城造在山上,是不能隱藏的;
15:303
neither do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel.'
Again by these words He leads them to strictness of life, training them to be vigilant, as men set beneath the eyes of all,
and contending in the midst of the theatre of the whole inhabited world.
'For do not regard this,' He says, 'that we are now sitting here, and are in a small corner of a nook;
祂說:「你們不要只看這一點,就是我們如今坐在此處,身在一隅之小角落;
15:307
for so shall you be manifest to all, as a city lying upon a mountain-top, as a lamp shining in a house upon the lampstand.'
Where now are they who disbelieve in the power of Christ? Let them hear these things, and being amazed at the power of the prophecy, let them worship His might.
For consider how great things He promised to men who were not even known in their own country;
因為你且思想,祂向這些連在本鄉都無人認識的人,應許了何等偉大的事;
15:310
that land and sea should know them, and that they should reach the ends of the inhabited world by their fame;
就是陸地與海洋都要認識他們,他們的名聲要傳到天下的極處;
15:311
or rather, not by fame alone, but also by the active working of their beneficence.
For it was not fame, spreading everywhere, that made them conspicuous, but the very demonstration that came through their deeds.
For as though they had become winged, they overran the whole earth more swiftly than the sunbeam, sowing the light of true religion.
And here He seems to me to be anointing them also for boldness of speech.
For to say, 'A city set on a hill cannot be hidden,' is the saying of One who is displaying His own power;
因為說「城造在山上,是不能隱藏的」,乃是彰顯祂自己大能者所說的話;
15:316
for just as it is impossible for that city to be concealed, so is it impossible for the preaching to be silenced and to escape notice.
For since He had spoken of persecutions and slanders and plots and wars, lest they should suppose that these could silence them, He encourages them, saying that not only will the message not be hidden, but it will illuminate the whole inhabited world.
And for this very reason they shall be resplendent and renowned.
By this, then, He displays His own power;
因此,祂藉此彰顯了自己的大能;
15:320
but by what follows He requires boldness on their part, speaking thus:
'Neither do men light a lamp and put it under the bushel, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.'
'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.'
15:323
'For I,' He says, 'have kindled the light;
祂說:「我已經點亮了這光;
15:324
but that it remain burning, let this be the work of your own diligence;
但要使它持續燃燒,這當是你們自己殷勤努力的事;
15:325
and this not for your own sakes alone, but also for the sake of those who are to enjoy this radiance, and to be led by the hand toward the truth.'
For the slanders will not be able to overshadow your brightness, if you live with strictness, and in such a way as those who are to convert the whole inhabited world.
Show forth, then, a life worthy of the grace, so that, just as it is proclaimed everywhere, so too your life may run alongside it.
Then He sets down yet another gain, besides the salvation of men, one sufficient to make them earnest and to lead them into all diligence.
'For you will not,' He says, 'merely set the inhabited world aright by living uprightly, but you will also cause God to be glorified;
祂說:「你們正直度日,不僅要匡正這天下,也要使神得著榮耀;
15:330
just as, on the contrary, by doing the opposite, you will both ruin men and cause the name of God to be blasphemed.'
'And how,' one might say, 'shall God be glorified through us, if indeed men are going to slander us?' But not all will do so;
或有人問:「若世人要毀謗我們,神怎能因我們得榮耀呢?」但並非人人都如此;
15:332
and even those very ones who do this out of envy will, in their conscience, marvel at you and approve of you;
就連那些出於嫉妒而如此行的人,在良心裡也必驚奇你們、稱許你們;
15:333
just as, on the other hand, those who openly flatter men living in wickedness inwardly condemn them.
What then? Do You bid us live for display and for vainglory? Away with the thought—that is not what I say.
For neither did I say, 'Be eager to bring your good deeds into the midst';
因為我並未說:「你們要熱切地將自己的善行擺在眾人面前」;
15:336
nor did I say, 'Display them';
也未說:「把它們顯露出來」;
15:337
but rather, 'Let your light shine';
乃是說:「你們的光當照耀出來」;
15:338
that is, let your virtue be abundant, and the fire lavish, and the light unspeakable.
For when virtue is so great, it is impossible for it to be hidden, even if he who pursues it should overshadow it ten thousand times.
Present to them a blameless life, and let them have no true occasion for accusation;
你們要向他們顯出無可指摘的生活,使他們沒有任何真實的把柄可控告;
15:341
and even if there be ten thousand accusers, none will be able to cast a shadow over you.
For nothing makes a man so conspicuous, even if he wishes ten thousand times to be hidden, as the display of virtue.
For as though clothed with the very sunbeam, so he shines brighter than it, sending forth his rays not to the earth, but even surpassing heaven itself.
From this too He comforts them all the more.
'For even if you grieve,' He says, 'when you are slandered, yet you will have many who, on your account, marvel at God.'
And from both sides is the reward gathered for you, both
when God is glorified through you, and when you are slandered for God's sake.
For lest we should make it our practice to be ill spoken of, having learned that the matter has a reward, He set down that saying not simply, but with two limitations;
因為恐怕我們一知道這事有賞賜,便刻意去招致惡名,祂並非籠統地說那話,而是加上兩個限定;
15:349
namely, when what is said is false, and when it is for God's sake;
就是:當所說的是虛謊的時候,並當是為神的緣故的時候;
15:350
and He shows that not that alone, but also being well spoken of brings much gain, since the glory passes over to God;
並且祂指明,不僅那事,連得著美名也帶來極大的益處,因為那榮耀歸與神;
15:351
and He holds out to them good hopes.
'For the slander of the wicked,' He says, 'has not such power as also to darken for others the sight of your light.'
'For when you have become foolish, then only will they trample on you; not when, in doing what is right, you are slandered.'
'For then there will be many who marvel, not at you only, but on your account also at your Father.'
And He said not 'God,' but 'the Father,' already laying beforehand the seeds of the nobility that was to be given them.
Then, showing their equal honor, above He said:
'Grieve not when you are ill spoken of;
「你們被人辱罵的時候,不要憂愁;
15:358
for it is enough for you that you hear these things for My sake.'
But here He sets down 'the Father,' everywhere indicating the equality.
Knowing therefore the gain that comes from this diligence, and the danger of negligence—for far worse than our own perdition is it that our Master should be blasphemed on our account—let us become without offense both to Jews and to Greeks and to the Church of God; offering a life brighter than the sun, and, if any wishes to slander us, grieving not at being ill spoken of, but at being justly ill spoken of.
For if we live in wickedness, even though there be none to slander us, we are more wretched than all men;
因為我們若生活在邪惡中,縱使無人毀謗,也比眾人更為可憐;
15:362
but if we are careful of virtue, even though the whole world speak ill of us, then shall we be more enviable than all, and shall draw to us all who choose to be saved;
但我們若留心於美德,縱使普天下都毀謗我們,那時我們必比眾人更值得羨慕,並要吸引一切甘願得救的人歸向我們;
15:363
for they will attend not to the slander of the wicked, but to the virtue of the life.
For the demonstration that comes through deeds is brighter than any trumpet, and a pure life is more luminous than the light itself, even though there be ten thousand who slander.
For if we have all the things spoken of before—if we are meek and lowly and merciful, pure and peacemakers, and when ill spoken of do not revile in return but even rejoice—we shall draw those who behold us no less than by miracles, and all will be gladly disposed toward us, be it a wild beast, be it some demon, be it whatsoever it may. And if there be some who slander, be not troubled thereat, nor look to their reviling you publicly, but examine their conscience, and you will see them applauding and admiring you, and reckoning up ten thousand praises.
See, at any rate, how Nebuchadnezzar praises the young men in the furnace;
你且看尼布甲尼撒怎樣稱讚那些在窯中的少年人;
15:367
and yet he was an enemy and a foe;
他原是仇敵,是對頭;
15:368
but when he saw them standing nobly, he proclaims and crowns them—for no other reason than that they disregarded him and obeyed the law of God.
For the devil, when he sees himself accomplishing nothing, thereafter withdraws, fearing lest he become the cause of yet more crowns for us;
因為魔鬼一見自己毫無成就,便就此退去,惟恐反倒成了我們得更多冠冕的緣由;
15:370
and when he has withdrawn, even one who is defiled and corrupt will recognize your virtue, that mist having been removed.
But even if men should misjudge you, from God you shall have the praise and the greater admiration.
Grieve not, then, nor fall down;
所以不要憂傷,也不要頹喪;
15:373
since the apostles also were to some a savor of death, but to others a savor of life.
For if you afford no handle, you are quit of all charges;
因為你若不給人任何把柄,就脫離了一切的控告;
15:375
nay rather, you have become the more blessed.
Shine forth, then, in your life, and take no account of any who slander.
For it is not possible—no, it is not possible—for one who is careful of virtue not to have many enemies.
But this is nothing to the virtuous man;
但這對有德之人算不得甚麼;
15:379
for through such things he will become the more resplendent.
Considering these things, then, let us look to one thing only—to order our own life with strictness;
所以,我們既思想這些事,就當單單注目於一件事,就是嚴謹地安排自己的生活;
15:381
for thus shall we also lead by the hand those who sit in darkness toward the life that is yonder.
For such is the power of this light, that it shines not here alone, but also guides on their way those who follow in the world to come.
For when they see us despising all present things and preparing ourselves for the world to come, they will be persuaded by our deeds before any word.
For who is so foolish that, seeing the man who but yesterday and the day before
lived in luxury and abounded in wealth now stripping himself of all things, taking wings, and arraying himself against hunger and poverty, against every hardship of ascetic living, against dangers, against bloodshed, against slaughter, and against all that seems to be dreadful—who would not take from this a clear proof of the things to come? But if we entangle ourselves in present things and thrust ourselves ever deeper into them, how shall they be able to be persuaded that we are hastening toward another abode? And what defence will then remain to us, when the fear of God has not among us the strength that human glory had among the philosophers of the Greeks? For some even of those men stripped themselves of their possessions and despised death, that they might make a display before men;
昔日窮奢極侈、家財萬貫,如今卻脫去一切,展翅高飛,甘願面對飢餓與貧窮,面對種種嚴苛的克己苦行,面對危險、流血、屠戮,並面對一切看似可怕之事——有誰不從此得著將來之事的明證呢?然而,倘若我們纏繞於現世之事,越發往裡頭鑽,他們又怎能被說服,相信我們是急切奔向另一個居所呢?那時,我們還有甚麼可推諉的呢?既然神的敬畏在我們中間,竟不如人的虛榮在希臘哲士中間那樣有力量?因為他們中有些人也曾脫去財物、輕看死亡,好在人前誇耀;
15:386
and for this reason their hopes proved empty.
What word then shall deliver us, when, with so much set before us and so great a philosophy opened to us, we cannot accomplish even the same as those men, but destroy both ourselves and others besides? For a Greek doing lawless deeds does not so much harm as a Christian who does these things;
那麼,當這許多的事擺在我們面前、這樣高深的智慧向我們敞開,我們竟連那些人所行的都不能成就,反倒既毀滅自己又連累別人,還有甚麼言語能救我們呢?因為希臘人行不法之事,其害處尚不及基督徒行這些事之大;
15:388
for the reputation of those men is already corrupt;
因為那些人的名聲本已敗壞了;
15:389
but ours, through the grace of God, is honourable and illustrious even among the ungodly.
Wherefore, when they most wish to reproach us and to heighten their accusation, they add this word, saying, for instance, 'The Christian!'
which they would not say, unless they held a high estimation concerning our doctrine. Have you not heard how many things and how great Christ commanded? When, then, will you be able to accomplish even one of those commandments, when, forsaking all, you go about collecting interest, patching together loans, contriving business dealings, purchasing herds of slaves, fashioning silver vessels, buying fields and houses and countless furnishings? And would that it were this only!
But when to these unseasonable pursuits you add injustice as well—cutting off another's land, tearing away his house, grinding down the poor, increasing hunger—when will you ever be able to set foot within those doors? Yet there are times when you even show mercy to the poor.
but there too again is much corruption.
For you do it either with arrogance or with vainglory, so that not even in your good deeds do you gain anything;
因為你行善時,不是帶著傲慢,就是帶著虛榮,以致就連在善事上你也一無所得;
15:395
than which what could be more wretched, when you suffer shipwreck even in the harbour? That this may not happen, then, when you have done some good deed, seek not the reward from me, that you may have God as your debtor.
'For lend,' it says, 'to those from whom you do not expect to receive.'
Why, forsaking Him, do you demand it of me, a poor and wretched man? Is the debtor vexed at being asked to repay? Is He poor? Is He unwilling to pay it down? Do you not see His unspeakable treasures? Do you not see His indescribable munificence? Take hold of Him, then, and demand payment;
你為何撇下祂,反倒向我這貧窮困苦的人索討呢?那欠債之主豈會因被索討而惱怒嗎?祂豈是貧窮的嗎?祂豈是不肯償付的嗎?你豈沒有看見祂那說不盡的寶藏嗎?你豈沒有看見祂那難以述說的慷慨嗎?那麼,就抓住祂,向祂索討罷;
15:398
for when thus asked, He rejoices.
For if He sees another being asked in place of what He Himself owes, He will be disposed as one insulted;
因為祂若看見有別人替祂所欠的被索討,祂就必像受了侮辱一般看待此事;
15:400
and He will no longer repay you, but will even justly bring a charge against you.
'For what ingratitude did you find in me?' He says;
'what poverty are you aware of in me, that passing me by you go to others? You lent to one, and demand of another? For even if a man received it, yet it was God who commanded that it be paid down;
你知道我有甚麼貧窮,竟越過我而去尋求別人呢?你借給了這一位,卻向另一位索討嗎?」因為即或是人接受了,卻是神吩咐要償付的;
15:403
and He wishes to be Himself both the principal debtor and the surety, furnishing you with countless occasions for demanding of Him on every side.
Do not, then, forsaking so great an ease and abundance, seek to receive from me who have nothing.
For what reason do you make a display to me of pitying the poor man? Did I tell you, 'Give'? Did you hear it from me, that you should also demand of me? He Himself said,
'He that has mercy on the poor lends to God.'
15:407
But He does not repay the whole now.
For such is His manner as a debtor;
因為祂作欠債之主的方式正是如此;
15:409
not as many are eager only to repay what was lent, but that He may also lay up in safety what was given, He devises and does all things.
For this very reason He pays some things down here, but treasures up others there.
Knowing these things, then, let us show much mercy and display great love toward men, both through money and through deeds.
And if we see someone suffering ill treatment and being beaten in the market-place, if it is possible to pay down money, let us do it;
我們若看見有人在市場上被虐待、被毆打,倘若能出錢,就當出錢;
15:413
and if it is possible to make peace by words, let us not shrink from it.
For there is a reward even for a word, or rather even for groanings;
因為就連一句話,甚至就連歎息,也是有賞賜的;
15:415
and this the blessed Job said:
'I wept for every one that was helpless, and I groaned when I saw a man in distress.'
But if there is a reward for tears and groanings, when words and zeal and many other things are added besides, consider how great the recompense becomes.
For we too were enemies to God;
因為我們從前也是與神為敵的;
15:419
and the Only-begotten reconciled us, casting Himself into the midst, receiving blows on our behalf, and enduring death for our sake.
Let us too, then, be zealous to deliver from countless evils those who fall into them, and not, as we now do, when we see people clashing and coming to blows with one another, stand by rejoicing in others' disgrace and forming a diabolical spectacle around them;
因此,我們也當熱心地救那些陷入無數禍患的人脫離困境,而不是像我們如今所行的,一看見有人彼此爭鬥、扭打成一團,就站在旁邊,以別人的醜態為樂,圍成一個屬魔鬼的看臺;
15:421
than which what could be more savage? You see men reviled, torn to pieces, rending their garments, their faces battered, and you endure to stand quietly by? Is the one fighting a bear? A wild beast? A serpent? He is a man who shares all things with you everywhere, he is a brother, he is a member of the same body.
do not incite others to the disgrace, but drive off those who have gathered and disperse them.
For to rejoice in such misfortunes belongs to the shameless and to household drudges, to filth and to irrational asses.
You see a man behaving disgracefully, and do you not think that you yourself are behaving disgracefully? Nor do you go into the midst and scatter the devil's phalanx and dissolve human ills? 'That I too may receive blows,' you say;
你看見一個人行事失態,難道不覺得你自己也在失態嗎?你竟不走進中間,去驅散魔鬼的陣營,並化解人間的禍患嗎?你說:「這樣連我自己也要挨打了;
15:425
and do you enjoin this on me?' Most likely you will not even suffer this;
你竟吩咐我做這事嗎?」多半你連這都不會遭遇;
15:426
but if you do suffer even this, the thing is a testimony for you.
But if you shrink from receiving blows, consider that your Master did not shrink from enduring the cross for your sake.
For those men are drunken and darkened, wrath tyrannizing over them and marshalling them as its general, and they have need of some sober person to help them—both he who does the wrong and he who is wronged;
因為那些人都已醉了、昏暗了,怒氣像暴君統轄他們,又像將軍調度他們,他們就需要一個清醒的人來幫助他們——那行不義的和那受不義的都是如此;
15:429
the one, that he may be freed from suffering ill; the other, that he may cease from doing ill.
Come forward, then, and stretch out your hand—you who are sober—to the drunken.
For there is also a drunkenness of anger, and one more grievous than that which comes from wine.
Do you not see the sailors, who, when they see some fallen into shipwreck, spread their sails and depart with much haste, that they may snatch their fellow-craftsmen from the surge? But if partners in a craft display so great a championship, how much more is it right that partners in nature should do all these things? For here too there is a shipwreck more grievous than that one.
For either he blasphemed under provocation, and emptied out everything;
因為那人或是在被激怒之下說了褻瀆的話,把一切都倒空了;
15:434
or he swore falsely, being tyrannized over by wrath, and again fell into hell;
或是在怒氣的暴虐之下起了假誓,就又墮入地獄;
15:435
or he strikes a blow and works murder, and undergoes this same shipwreck once more.
Go forth, then, and stay the evil, and drag up those who are sinking, going down into the very sea of the tempest;
因此,你當前往,制止這禍患,親自下到那風暴的海中,把正下沉的人拉上來;
15:437
and having broken up the devil's theatre, and having taken each one apart privately, exhort them to quell the flame and to lull the waves.
But if the fire is greater and the furnace becomes more grievous, be not afraid;
倘若那火更大了,那爐更兇險了,你也不要懼怕;
15:439
for you have many who will lay hold with you and stretch out a hand, if only you supply the beginning, and before all the God of peace.
And if you first shake off the flame, many others also will follow, and of the good deeds accomplished by them you yourself will receive the reward.
Hear what Christ enjoined upon the Jews, who crept upon the ground:
'If you see the beast of burden of your enemy,' He says, 'falling down, do not pass by, but raise it up.'
And yet, to raise up a fallen beast of burden is far lighter than to part fighting men and to reconcile them.
But if we must raise up together the ass of enemies, much more the souls of friends;
既然連仇敵的驢我們都當一同扶起,那麼朋友的靈魂就更當如此了;
15:445
and especially when the fall is more grievous;
尤其當那跌倒更為兇險時;
15:446
for these fall not into a mire, but into the fire of hell, unable to bear the burden of wrath.
But you, seeing your brother lying under the load, and the devil standing over him and kindling the fire, run past cruelly and mercilessly;
然而你看見你的弟兄壓在重擔之下,又看見魔鬼站在他身旁煽起火來,你卻殘忍無情地從旁跑過去;
15:448
a thing which is not without danger to do even in the case of an irrational beast.
And the Samaritan, seeing a wounded man who was a stranger and in no way related to him, both stood over him, and set him upon his own beast of burden, and brought him to the
inn, and hired a physician, and gave the one sum of money, and promised the other.
But you, seeing one who has fallen not among robbers, but into a phalanx of demons and a siege of wrath, not in a wilderness, but in the midst of the market-place, not being about to spend money, nor to hire a beast of burden, nor to escort him a long road, but only to utter words—do you shrink back and draw away, and run past cruelly and mercilessly? And how do you expect ever to find God propitious when you call upon Him? And let me speak also to you who behave disgracefully in public, to the one who insults and does wrong.
Do you deal out blows, tell me, and kick, and bite? Have you become a wild boar, and a wild ass? And are you not ashamed, nor do you blush, turning savage and betraying your own nobility? For though you are poor, still you are free;
告訴我,你竟施打、踢踹、咬囓嗎?你變成了野豬、野驢嗎?你難道不覺羞恥、不臉紅嗎?竟如此獸性大發,出賣了自己與生俱來的高貴?縱然你貧窮,你到底仍是自由的;
15:453
for though you are a craftsman, still you are a Christian.
For this very reason then, because you are poor, it is necessary for you to keep still.
For quarrelling belongs to the rich, not to the poor;
因為爭鬥是富人的事,不是窮人的事;
15:456
to the rich, who have many occasions for wars.
But you, who have not the pleasure of wealth, go about heaping upon yourself the evils of wealth—enmities and rivalries and quarrels;
但你既沒有財富所帶來的享樂,卻四處為自己招聚財富所帶來的禍害——仇恨、爭競與鬥毆;
15:458
and you throttle your brother, and choke him, and cast him down in public while all look on;
你在眾目睽睽之下勒住你的弟兄、扼其咽喉、將他摔倒在地;
15:459
and do you not consider that you yourself are rather the one disgraced, imitating the impulses of the brute beasts—nay rather, becoming even worse than they? For among them all things are common, and they herd together with one another, and walk together;
難道你不想想,其實是你自己更為丟臉嗎?你效法了無理性牲畜的衝動——不,甚至比牠們還糟。因為在牠們中間萬事都是共有的,牠們彼此成群、同行同走;
15:460
but among us there is nothing common; rather all is turned upside down—quarrels, rivalries, revilings, and hatreds, and insults.
And we reverence neither the heaven, unto which we have all in common been called, nor the earth which He gave up in common to all, nor even nature itself;
我們既不敬畏那我們眾人一同被召去的天,也不敬畏那神共同賜給眾人的地,甚至連本性也不顧念;
15:462
but wrath and the love of money sweep all these away and are gone.
Have you not seen him who owed the ten thousand talents, and then, after the remission of that debt, throttled his own fellow-servant for a hundred denarii—
how many evils he underwent, and how he was delivered over to undying punishment? Do you not dread the example? Do you not fear lest you too suffer the same? For we also owe our Master many and great debts;
他遭受了何等的禍患,又如何被交付於永不止息的刑罰?你不懼怕這榜樣嗎?你不害怕自己也要受同樣的報應嗎?因為我們也欠了主人許多而重大的債;
15:465
yet nevertheless He bears with us and is longsuffering, and neither presses upon us, as we do upon our fellow-servants, nor chokes and throttles us;
然而祂卻寬容我們、恆久忍耐,既不像我們逼迫同伴那樣逼迫我們,也不扼我們的咽喉、不勒我們;
15:466
and yet, if He had willed to demand of us even the smallest fraction of them, we should long ago have perished.
Considering these things then, beloved, let us humble ourselves, and be thankful to those who are indebted to us;
所以,親愛的,我們思念這些事,就當自卑,並向那些欠我們債的人心存感激;
15:468
for they become to us, if we are wise, an occasion of the greatest forgiveness, and giving little, we shall receive much.
Why then do you demand by force, when you ought—even if the other were willing to pay—to forgive him, that you might receive the whole from God? But as it is, you do everything, and use violence, and contend, so that nothing of yours may be forgiven you;
那麼你何必用強逼索討呢?其實你當如此行——縱使對方情願償還,你也該赦免他,好叫你能從神那裡領受這全部。可是現今你卻無所不用其極,又逼迫又爭競,以致你自己的債反倒毫不得赦;
15:470
and while you seem to be injuring your neighbour, you are thrusting the sword against yourself, increasing your punishment in hell;
你自以為在傷害鄰舍,其實是把刀刺向自己,增添你在地獄裡的刑罰;
15:471
but if you will be a little wise here, you make the reckoning gentle for yourself.
For God on this account wills that we should begin such munificence, that He may take occasion to render us in return yet more.
As many debtors then as you have, both of money and of sins, releasing them all as free, demand from God the recompense of such magnanimity.
For as long as those men are indebted to you, you will not have God as your debtor;
因為只要那些人還欠你的債,你就不能以神為你的欠債者;
15:475
but if you release them, you will be able to lay hold of God, and to demand, with much munificence, the recompense of so great wisdom.
For if a man passing by and seeing you holding fast your debtor, and bidding you release that one but hold him accountable in that one's stead, would not choose to act dishonourably after the release, seeing he had transferred the whole to himself—
how shall not God repay many times, yea ten thousand times over, when for the sake of His command we let those who are accountable to us depart freed, without calling them to account for anything, small or great? Let us not then think of the temporary pleasure that comes to us from exacting from our debtors, but of the loss, how great, which we shall thereafter endure from this, harming ourselves in things immortal.
Being made superior therefore to all these things, let us freely forgive both money and
trespasses to those who are accountable to us, that we may make the reckoning gentle for ourselves;
過犯,好叫我們為自己使那算帳變得溫和;
15:480
and what we were not able to accomplish through our other virtue, obtaining this through not bearing malice against our neighbours, may we enjoy the eternal good things, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
