'Judge not, that ye be not judged.'
What then? Ought we not to rebuke those who sin? For Paul too says this very same thing:
or rather, there also it is Christ who speaks through Paul, saying:
'Thou, why dost thou judge thy brother? And thou too, why dost thou set at nought thy brother?' And, 'Who art thou that judgest another man's servant?' And again:
'Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come.'
'Reprove, rebuke, exhort.' And, 'Them that sin rebuke before all.' And Christ too said to Peter:
'Go, reprove him between thee and him alone;
「你去,趁著只有他和你在一處的時候,指出他的錯來;
23:8
and if he will not hear, take also another to thyself;
他若不聽,你就另帶一兩個人同去;
23:9
but if not even so he yields, tell it also to the church;'
and He appointed so many to rebuke, and not only to rebuke, but even to chastise? For him who would hear none of these things, He commanded to be as a heathen and a publican.
And how did He give them also the keys? For if they are not to judge, they shall have authority over nothing, and to no purpose have they received the power of binding and loosing.
And otherwise, if this doctrine were to prevail, all would go to ruin — the affairs of the churches, and of the cities, and of households.
For if the master judge not his servant, and the mistress her handmaid, and the father his son, and the friend his friend, the works of wickedness will increase.
And why do I say, the friend his friend? If we judge not our enemies, we shall never be able to dissolve the enmity, but all things will be turned upside down.
What then can that saying be? Let us attend with exactness, lest one suppose the remedies of salvation and the laws of peace to be laws of overthrow and confusion.
For chiefly by what follows He showed to those who have understanding the virtue of this law, when He said:
'Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?' But if to many of the more careless it still seems rather obscure, I will try to explain it from the beginning.
For here, as it seems to me at least, He does not simply command us not to judge all sins, nor does He simply forbid the doing of such a thing, but He speaks of those who, being full of countless evils, trample upon others for trifling faults.
And He seems to me here also to hint at the Jews, in that, being bitter accusers of their neighbours for small and worthless matters, they themselves committed great sins without perceiving it;
並且在我看來,祂在此也暗指猶太人,因為他們為著微小而無足輕重的事苦苦控告鄰舍,自己卻毫無知覺地犯了大罪;
23:20
which also toward the end He reproached them with, saying, 'Ye bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, but ye yourselves will not move them with your finger;'
and, 'Ye tithe mint and dill, and have left the weightier matters of the law, judgment, and mercy, and faith.'
He seems then to be aiming at these men also, forestalling them in the very things wherein they were about to accuse the disciples.
For even if those men had committed no such sin, yet nevertheless in the eyes of the others these were reckoned to be transgressions;
因為門徒縱然沒有犯過這樣的罪,然而在那些人眼中,這些事仍被算為過犯;
23:24
such as, not keeping the Sabbath, eating with unwashed hands, reclining at table with publicans.
'Ye who strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel.'
Nevertheless He lays down a common law concerning these matters.
And to the Corinthians too Paul commanded not simply not to judge, but not to judge those above themselves, and that on a matter not agreed upon;
保羅對哥林多人也是這樣,並非單單吩咐不可論斷,乃是吩咐不可論斷那在他們之上的人,並且是在尚未公認確定的事上;
23:28
not simply those who sin, not to judge them.
And He rebuked them not indiscriminately, all at that time, but He reproved disciples doing this concerning their teachers, and those who, being themselves guilty of countless evils, slandered the guiltless.
This then is what Christ here also hinted at;
這正是基督在此所暗指的;
23:31
and He hinted at it not simply, but He also attached great fear,
23:32
and made the punishment inevitable.
'For with what judgment ye judge,' He saith, 'ye shall be judged.'
For thou dost not condemn him, He saith, but thyself, and thou makest the tribunal fearful to thee, and the reckonings exact.
As, therefore, in the forgiveness of sins the beginnings are from us, so also in this judgment the measures of the condemnation are laid down by us.
For one ought neither to reproach, nor to trample upon, but to admonish;
因為我們既不當辱罵,也不當踐踏人,乃當勸誡;
23:37
not to speak evil, but to counsel;
不當惡言毀謗,乃當勸告;
23:38
not to set upon him with arrogance, but to correct him with tender affection.
For it is not him, but thyself, that thou deliverest over to the uttermost punishment, in not sparing him when it may be needful to give sentence concerning the faults committed against him.
Seest thou how these two commandments are both light and the causes of great good to those who obey, even as they are of evils to those who give no heed? For he that forgives his neighbour has, before that neighbour, freed himself from the accusations, having toiled at nothing;
你看見這兩條誡命是何等容易,卻又是順從者莫大益處的根源,正如它們也是不留心者禍患的根源麼?因為那饒恕鄰舍的人,未費絲毫力氣,便先於那鄰舍脫離了控告;
23:41
and he that examines the faults committed by others with sparing and pardon has, by his very sentence, laid up beforehand for himself a great contribution of pardon.
What then? If one commits fornication, He saith, am I not to say that fornication is an evil, nor to correct the licentious man? Correct him indeed, but not as an enemy, nor as a foe exacting a penalty, but as a physician preparing remedies.
For He did not say, Stop him not from sinning, but, Judge not;
因為祂並沒有說:不要攔阻犯罪的人,乃說:不要論斷;
23:44
that is, become not a bitter judge.
And moreover, this was said not concerning the great and forbidden sins — as I said before — but concerning those which are not even thought to be transgressions.
'Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye?' For indeed many now do this;
「為甚麼看見你弟兄眼中有刺呢?」因為如今許多人正是這樣行;
23:47
if they see a monk having a superfluous garment, they cast at him the Lord's law, while they themselves plunder countless things and every day are covetous;
他們若看見一個修士多有一件衣服,便將主的律法擲向他,自己卻掠奪無數之物,天天貪婪;
23:48
and if they see one enjoying more abundant food, they become bitter accusers, though they themselves every day are drunken and given to carousing, not knowing that together with their own sins they thereby heap up for themselves a greater fire, and deprive themselves of all defence.
For that one must examine one's own doings with exactness, thou thyself wast the first to lay down the law, having thus passed sentence upon thy neighbour's affairs.
Do not, then, think it a grievous thing, if you too are destined to render such an account.
'You hypocrite, first cast out the beam from your own eye.'
Here He wishes to display the great wrath which He bears toward those who do such things.
For indeed, whenever He wishes to show that a sin is great, and that great is the punishment and wrath that attend it, He begins with a reproach.
Thus, indeed, He also spoke in indignation to that man who exacted the hundred denarii, saying:
'You wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt;'
so also here, 'You hypocrite.'
For such a verdict does not proceed from solicitude, but from a hatred of mankind;
因為這樣的判斷並非出於關切,乃是出於恨惡世人;
23:58
and it puts forward a mask of loving-kindness, while it accomplishes a work of the utmost wickedness, fastening superfluous reproaches and accusations upon one's neighbours, and seizing the rank of a teacher when one is not even worthy to be a disciple.
For this reason He called such a one a hypocrite.
For you who in the affairs of others are so harsh as to observe even trifling faults, how have you become in your own affairs so careless as to overlook even great ones? 'First cast out the beam from your own eye.'
You see that He does not forbid judging, but commands one first to cast out the beam from the eye, and then to set right the affairs of others? For a man knows his own faults better than those of others;
你看見祂並非禁止判斷,乃是吩咐人先去掉自己眼中的梁木,然後才去糾正別人的事嗎?因為人對自己的過失比對別人的過失知道得更清楚;
23:62
and he sees the greater rather than the lesser;
並且他看見的是較大的而非較小的;
23:63
and he loves himself more than his neighbour.
So that, if you act out of solicitude, care first for yourself, where the sin is both plainer and greater.
But if you despise yourself, it is plain that you judge your brother not out of solicitude, but out of hatred and a desire to expose him to public shame.
For even if it were needful that he should be judged, it should be by one who is guilty of no such thing,
23:67
and not by you.
For since He had laid down great and lofty precepts of the higher wisdom, lest anyone should say that it is easy to philosophize about such things in words, wishing to show His boldness of speech, and that He was answerable for none of the things He had said but had accomplished them all rightly, He spoke this parable.
For indeed He too was afterwards to judge, saying, 'Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites;'
but He was not liable to the things He had spoken;
然而祂對自己所說的話並無虧欠;
23:71
for neither did He cast out a mote, nor did He have a beam upon His eyes, but being pure of all these things, He thus corrected the transgressions of all.
For one ought not, He says, to judge others, when one is himself guilty of the same faults.
And why do you marvel if He Himself laid down this law, when even the robber knew it upon the cross, saying to the other robber:
'Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?' — speaking the very same thoughts as Christ.
But you not only do not cast out your own beam, you do not even see it;
但你不但不去掉自己的梁木,甚至連看也看不見;
23:76
yet the mote of another you not only see, but you also judge it and attempt to cast it out;
然而別人眼中的刺,你不但看得見,還加以判斷,並試圖去把它取出;
23:77
just as though a man afflicted with a severe dropsy, or with some other incurable disease, should neglect this, but blame another who neglects a slight swelling.
And if it is an evil not to see one's own sins, it is a twofold and threefold evil both to sit in judgment upon others, while insensibly carrying the beams about upon one's own eyes.
For sin is heavier than a beam.
What then He enjoined through the words spoken is this: that he who is himself liable to countless evils should not be a bitter judge of the faults of others, and especially when these are trifling;
那麼,祂藉著所說的話所吩咐的,就是這事:凡自己身負無數惡行的人,不當作那嚴苛的判官去審斷別人的過失,尤其當那些過失是微小的時候;
23:81
not overthrowing reproof or correction, but forbidding a man to neglect his own affairs and to leap upon those of others.
For indeed this made men advance into great wickedness, introducing a twofold depravity.
For he who has made it his practice to neglect his own faults, though they be great, but to scrutinize bitterly those of others, though they be small and paltry, was corrupted in two ways:
both by despising his own concerns, and by taking up enmity and hostility against all men, and by anointing himself day by day for the utmost cruelty and want of compassion.
Having therefore taken away all these things by this excellent legislation, He again added another injunction, saying:
'Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast your pearls before swine.'
And yet, He says, further on He commanded:
'What you have heard in the ear, proclaim upon the housetops.'
But neither is this contrary to the former.
For there too He did not simply command to speak to all, but to speak with boldness to those to whom one ought to speak.
And by 'dogs' here He obscurely indicated those who live in incurable impiety, and have no hope of a change for the better; and by 'swine' those who spend their whole life in unbridled living — all of whom He declared to be unworthy of such a hearing.
This indeed Paul also declared, saying:
'But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit;'
and in many other places he says that corruption of life is the cause of not receiving the more perfect doctrines.
Wherefore He commands not to fling the doors open to them;
因此祂吩咐不要向他們敞開門戶;
23:96
for they become more insolent after learning.
For to the well-disposed and the intelligent, holy things when unveiled appear venerable;
因為對於心存善意、有見識的人,聖物一經揭示便顯為可敬;
23:98
but to the senseless, they are more so when they remain unknown.
Since, then, from their nature they cannot understand these things, [let them be concealed, He says, so that] they may at least be put to shame through their ignorance.
For neither does the swine know what a pearl is.
Therefore, since it does not know, let it not even see it, lest it trample upon what it does not know.
For nothing more comes of it than greater harm to those who are so disposed and who hear.
For holy things are outraged by such men, who know not what they are;
因為聖物被這等不曉得其為何物的人所褻瀆;
23:104
and they are the more lifted up and armed against us.
'Lest they trample them, and turn again and rend you.'
And yet, He says, they ought to have been so strong that, even after being learned, they should remain invincible, and afford no handles to others against us.
But it is not those holy things that give the handle, but the fact that these men are swine;
然而給人把柄的並非那些聖物,乃是這些人本是豬的緣故;
23:108
just as the pearl also, when trampled, is trampled not because it is contemptible, but because it fell among swine.
For they feign moderation, in order to learn;
因為他們假裝溫和,為要學習;
23:110
then, when they have learned, becoming altogether other men, they lampoon, they mock, they laugh at us as though we had been deceived.
For this reason Paul too said to Timothy:
'for he has greatly withstood our words;'
and again in another place, 'From such turn away;'
and, 'A man that is a heretic, after a first and second admonition, reject.'
It is not, then, from those holy things that they arm themselves, but they of themselves become foolish thereby, being filled with greater madness.
For this reason it is no small gain that they should remain in ignorance;
為此,使他們仍留在無知之中,並非小小的益處;
23:117
for so they do not despise it as much.
But if they learn, the loss is twofold.
For they themselves will reap no fruit from it, but will even be more grievously harmed, and will cause you countless troubles.
Let those give heed who shamelessly entangle themselves with everyone, and who make sacred things contemptible.
For it is on this account that we celebrate the Mysteries with the doors shut, and exclude the uninitiated—not because we have condemned as weak the rites we perform, but because the many are still too imperfectly disposed toward them.
For this very reason He Himself also spoke many things to the Jews in parables, since seeing they did not see.
For this reason too Paul commanded that one should know how one ought to answer each person.
Ask, and it shall be given you;
你們祈求,就給你們;
23:125
knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For since He had enjoined great and marvelous things, and had commanded them to be superior to all the passions, and had led heaven itself down to them, and had charged them to be zealous—so far as is possible—to become like, not to angels nor to archangels, but to the very Lord of all; and since He commanded the disciples not only to achieve these things themselves, but also to set others right, and to distinguish the wicked from those who are not such, the dogs from those who are not dogs (though much lies hidden within men)—therefore, lest they should say that these things are hard and unbearable,
for indeed, in what follows, Peter uttered something of this kind, when he said:
Who then can be saved? And again:
If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not expedient to marry.
In order, then, that they might not say these things now also, He had chiefly demonstrated already through the foregoing that these things are easy, laying down many continuous arguments able to persuade;
為要叫他們如今也不再這樣說,主已首先藉著前面所講的,用許多連貫且足以說服人的論證,證明這些事乃是容易的;
23:131
and now He adds the crowning proof of their easiness, devising no ordinary consolation for the labors—namely, the alliance that comes from persevering prayers.
For we must not be zealous ourselves alone, He says, but must also call in the help from above;
祂說,我們不可單靠自己殷勤,還要祈求那從上頭來的幫助;
23:133
and by all means it will come and be present, and will take part with us in our contests, and will make all things easy.
For this reason He both commanded us to ask, and pledged the gift.
Yet He did not simply command us to ask, but with much perseverance and intensity.
For this is the meaning of 'Seek.'
For indeed the one who seeks, casting all else out of his mind, becomes wholly intent upon that one thing which is sought, and gives no thought to any of the things present.
And those know the truth of what I say who, having lost either gold or servants, go in search of them.
23:139
By 'seeking,' then, He indicated this;
祂用「尋找」所指的便是這個;
23:140
and by 'knocking' He indicated approaching with vehemence and a fervent mind.
Do not, then, fall down in despair, O man, nor show less zeal for virtue than desire for riches.
For those things you have often sought and not found;
因為那些錢財你屢次尋找卻找不著;
23:143
yet nonetheless, though you know that you will by no means certainly find them, you set every manner of search in motion;
然而縱然你知道未必一定能得著,你仍舊動用一切方法去尋覓;
23:144
but here, though you have a promise that you shall by all means receive, you do not display even the smallest fraction of that zeal.
And if you do not receive at once, do not even so despair.
For it was on this account that He said 'Knock,' to show that even if He does not at once open the door, one must persevere.
But if you disbelieve My declaration, at least believe the example.
For what man is there of you, He says, whom if his son shall ask bread, will he give him a stone? For among men, if you do this continually, you seem to be troublesome and burdensome;
祂說:「你們中間誰有兒子求餅,反給他石頭呢?」因為在人間,你若不住地這樣求,就顯得討厭而累贅;
23:149
but with God, it is when you do not do this that you provoke Him the more.
And if you continue asking, even though you do not receive at once, you shall by all means receive.
For it is on this account that the door is shut—that it may lead you to knock;
門所以關著,正是為要引你去叩門;
23:152
for this reason He does not consent at once—that you may ask.
Continue therefore doing these things, and you shall by all means receive.
'Shall I ask and not receive?' He has fortified you with the parable, again laying down arguments, and from human affairs leading you on to be confident concerning these matters;
「難道我求了卻得不著嗎?」祂已用這比喻堅固你,再次擺出論證,並從人間的事引你對這些事存著把握;
23:155
showing through these things that we must not only ask, but also ask the things we ought.
For what father is there of you, whom if his son shall ask bread, will he give him a stone? So that if you do not receive, it is because you ask a stone.
For even if you are a son, this alone does not suffice for receiving;
因為你即使是兒子,單憑這一點還不足以得著;
23:158
nay, this very thing hinders the receiving—that, being a son, you ask things which are not expedient.
Do you therefore ask nothing worldly, but all things spiritual, and you shall by all means receive.
For Solomon too, since he asked the very things that ought to be asked, behold how quickly he received.
Two things, then, must belong to the one who prays: both to ask earnestly, and to ask the things one ought;
所以祈禱的人必須具備兩件事:既要懇切地求,又要求所當求的;
23:162
since you also, He says, though you are fathers, wait for your sons to ask;
祂說,因為你們也是這樣,你們雖作父親,仍等候兒子來求;
23:163
and if they ask anything unprofitable from you, you withhold the gift;
他們若向你們求甚麼無益的事,你們就不給;
23:164
just as, on the other hand, if it is profitable, you consent and provide it.
And you, considering these things, do not withdraw until you receive;
你也當思想這些事,不到得著就不要退去;
23:166
until you find, do not depart;
不到尋見就不要離開;
23:167
do not relax your zeal, until the door be opened.
For if you approach with this mind, and say, 'Unless I receive, I will not depart,' you shall by all means receive—provided you ask such things as are fitting for Him who is asked to give, and profitable for you who ask.
And what are these things? To seek all things spiritual;
這些是甚麼呢?就是尋求一切屬靈的事;
23:170
to approach asking forgiveness only after having forgiven those who have trespassed against us;
在饒恕了那些得罪我們的人之後,才前來祈求赦免;
23:171
to lift up holy hands without wrath and disputings.
If we ask in this manner, we shall receive.
For as things now are, our asking is a laughingstock, and of men whether drunk or sober.
'What then,' someone says, 'when I ask even spiritual things and do not receive?' By all means you did not knock with zeal, or you rendered yourself unworthy of receiving, or you withdrew too quickly.
'And for what reason,' someone says, 'did He not say what things one ought to ask?' Yet indeed He did say all these things in what precedes, and showed concerning what things one ought to approach.
Do not, then, say, 'I approached, and did not receive.'
For with God there is never any not-receiving—with Him who loves so as even to surpass fathers, and to surpass them by as much as goodness surpasses this wickedness.
For if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven?
But He said these things, not disparaging human nature, nor reviling the race;
祂說這話,並非要毀謗人的本性,也非要辱罵人類;
23:180
but by way of contrast with His own goodness, calling the fatherly tender affection 'wickedness';
乃是為要與祂自己的良善作對照,才把父親的慈愛稱為「不好」;
23:181
so great is the excess of His love for mankind.
Do you see an ineffable argument, sufficient to rouse even one who has utterly despaired unto good hopes? Here, then, He shows the goodness from the case of fathers;
你看見這無可言喻的論證了嗎?它足以喚起連那全然絕望的人,也生出美好的盼望。在此,祂從作父親的例子顯明良善;
23:183
but in what precedes, from the greater things which He gave—from the soul, from the body;
而在前面,則是從祂所賜更大的恩賜—就是從魂、從身體來顯明的;
23:184
and nowhere does He set forth the sum of good things, nor bring into the midst His own coming;
然而祂並不在任何地方擺出眾善之總和,也不把自己的降臨提出來說;
23:185
for He who hastened thus to give up His Son to slaughter, how shall He not freely give us all things? For it had not yet come to pass.
But Paul indeed sets this forth, speaking thus:
He who spared not His own Son, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? But He Himself still discourses with them from human examples.
Then, showing that we must neither be confident in prayer while neglecting our own efforts, nor, being zealous, trust in our own diligence alone, but must both seek the help from above and contribute what is from ourselves, He continually sets down both this and that.
For indeed, having exhorted much, He also taught them to pray; and having taught them to pray, He again came back to the exhortation concerning the things to be done.
Then, from that point He passes again to the need of praying continually, saying:
Ask, and seek, and knock;
and from thence again to the duty that they themselves also be earnest;
然後又從這裡轉到他們自己也當殷勤這件事上;
23:193
For all things whatsoever, He says, that ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them;
in brief summing up all things, and showing that virtue is concise, and easy, and known to all.
And He did not merely say, All things whatsoever ye would;
祂也不只是說「凡你們所願的一切」;
23:196
but, All things therefore whatsoever ye would.
For this word therefore He added not without purpose, but with a hidden meaning:
If ye wish, He says, to be heard, then along with those things which I have spoken, do these also.
whatsoever ye would that men should do to you.
Didst thou see how by this too He showed that together with prayer we need also an exact manner of life? And He did not say, Whatsoever thou wouldest to be done to thee by God, that do thou to thy neighbor;
你看見祂如何藉此也指明,除了禱告之外,我們還需要嚴謹的生活嗎?祂並沒有說:凡你願意神為你成就的,你就當如此待鄰舍;
23:201
lest thou shouldest say, And how is it possible? He is God, but I am man;
免得你說:這怎麼可能呢?祂是神,我卻是人;
23:202
but, Whatsoever thou wouldest to be done to thee by thy fellow-servant, these things do thou also show forth toward thy neighbor.
What is lighter than this? What is more just? Then also the commendation, before the prizes, is very great.
For this is the law and the prophets.
Whence it is plain that virtue is according to our nature, that we all of ourselves know what is required, and that it is never possible to take refuge in ignorance.
Enter ye in through the strait gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be that go in thereat.
And strait is the gate and narrow the way that leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
And yet, after these things He was saying:
My yoke is easy, and My burden is light;
and in the things but now spoken He hinted at the same;
而在剛才所說的話裡,祂也暗示了同樣的意思;
23:211
how then does He here say that it is strait and narrow? Yet indeed, if thou attend, even here He shows it to be very light, and easy, and manageable.
And how, one may say, is the strait and narrow way easy? Because it is a way and a gate;
有人會問:那窄的、難行的路怎會是容易的呢?因為它終究是一條路、一道門;
23:213
even as the other likewise, though it be wide, though it be broad, that too is a way and a gate.
But of these things none is abiding, but all pass away, both the grievous and the pleasant things of this life.
And not in this respect only are the things of virtue easy, but by their end also they become again yet easier.
For it is not the passing away of the toils and the sweats, but also the arriving at a good end (for it terminates in life), that is enough to comfort those who are striving.
So that the temporary nature of the toils, and the perpetuity of the crowns, and that these come first while those follow after, may prove the greatest consolation in the toils.
Wherefore Paul also called the affliction light, not by reason of the nature of the things that happen, but by reason of the purpose of them that strive, and the hope of the things to come.
For the light affliction, he says, worketh out an eternal weight of glory, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.
For if the waves and the seas are light to the sailors, and the slaughters and the wounds to the soldiers, and the storms and the frosts to the husbandmen, and to the boxers the bitter blows, all things light and bearable for the hope of prizes that are corruptible and perishing;
因為若那波浪與汪洋對水手,殺戮與創傷對士兵,風暴與嚴寒對農夫,猛烈的擊打對拳鬥者,都因那必朽壞、必消亡之獎賞的盼望而變得輕省可忍受;
23:221
how much more, when heaven is set before us, and the unspeakable good things, and the immortal prizes, will no one have any feeling of the present distresses.
But if some account it to be even thus laborious, the surmise is only of their own slothfulness.
See, at any rate, how from another quarter also He makes it easy, bidding them not to engage with the dogs, nor to give themselves up to the swine, and to beware of the false prophets, and on every side keeping them braced for the contest.
And this very thing, His calling it strait, contributed greatly toward making it easy;
而祂稱這路為窄的,這一點本身也極大地促成了它變得容易;
23:225
for it disposed them to be sober and watchful.
As therefore Paul, when he says, Our wrestling is not against blood and flesh, does this not to cast down, but to arouse the minds of the soldiers;
所以正如保羅說「我們並不是與屬血氣的爭戰」時,他這樣說並不是要叫人灰心,乃是要激勵眾兵士的心志;
23:227
even so He too, awakening the travelers, called the way rough.
And not by this means only did He make them watchful, but also by adding that it hath many that trip men up—and, what is yet more grievous, that they do not even assail openly, but concealing themselves;
祂使他們警醒,不僅藉這法子,也藉著加上這話:就是這路上有許多絆倒人的;更難堪的是,他們並不公然攻擊,乃是把自己隱藏起來;
23:229
for such is the race of the false prophets.
But look not at this, He says, that it is rough and strait, but at where it ends;
祂說:你不要看這路是崎嶇窄小的,倒要看它終歸何處;
23:231
nor that the opposite is wide and broad, but at where it comes to ruin.
And all these things He says, rousing our zeal;
祂說這一切,都是為要激發我們的熱心;
23:233
even as also elsewhere He said, that The violent take it by force.
For he that strives, when he clearly sees the judge of the games marveling at the laboriousness of the contests, becomes the more eager.
Let us not therefore be dismayed, when many grievous things befall us from this quarter.
For the way is narrow, and the gate strait, but not the city.
For this reason then, one must not here expect
any relaxation, nor look for aught grievous remaining there.
And having said that Few there be that find it, here again He both declared the slothfulness of the many, and instructed His hearers not to give heed to the prosperities of the many, but to the toils of the few.
For the greater part, He says, not only do not walk in it, but neither do they even choose it;
祂說:大多數人不但不行這路,甚至也不揀選這路;
23:241
which is a matter of the utmost reproach.
But we must not give heed to the many, nor be troubled thereby, but emulate the few, and, bracing ourselves on every side, so walk in it.
For besides its being strait, there are also many who trip up them that travel the road that leadeth thither.
23:244
Beware of the false prophets;
for they will come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Behold, together with the dogs and the swine, another kind of ambush and plot, far more grievous than that.
For those are confessed and manifest, but these are disguised.
Wherefore also He bade them abstain from the former, but to examine these too with exactness, since it is not possible to discern them at the first assault.
Wherefore also He said, Beware, making them more exact for the discernment of them.
Then, lest hearing that it is strait and narrow, and that one must walk contrary to the many, and beware of swine and dogs, and along with these yet another and more wicked race, this of the wolves;
接著,恐怕他們聽見這路是窄小難行的,又聽見人必須與多數人背道而行,且要防備豬與狗,以及除這些之外還有另一更兇惡的一類,就是這狼的一類;
23:251
lest they should sink down under the multitude of the grievous things, being about both to go contrary to the many, and along with these again to have anxious care on their behalf, He reminded them of the things that came to pass in the days of their fathers, calling them false prophets;
恐怕他們因這許多愁苦之事而喪膽,既要與多數人背道而行,又要為這些事操心防備,祂就藉著稱他們為假先知,使他們回想到他們列祖時代所發生的事;
23:252
for indeed at that time also such things used to happen.
Be not therefore troubled, He says;
祂說:所以你們不要惶惑;
23:254
for nothing new nor strange will befall.
For the devil ever sets deceit side by side with the truth.
But by false prophets here He seems to me to hint not at the heretics, but at those who are indeed of corrupt life, yet wear about them a mask of virtue—whom the multitude are wont to call by the appellation of the pretended qualities they assume.
By their fruits ye shall know them.
For among heretics it is possible oftentimes to find even a good life;
因為在異端之人中,往往也能找著好的生活;
23:259
but among these, of whom I spoke, by no means.
What then, someone asks, if in these things too they play the hypocrite? Yet they will be caught easily.
For such is the nature of this way which I have commanded men to walk: it is toilsome and full of hardship;
因為我所吩咐人行走的這條道路,其本性正是如此:勞苦而艱難;
23:262
but the hypocrite would not choose to labour, only to make a display.
For since He had said that 'Few are they who find it,' He again purges them of those who do not find it but merely feign to, bidding us look not only at those who wear the outward masks, but at those who pursue it in truth.
And for what reason, someone asks, did He not make them plainly manifest, but cast us upon the search? So that we may be watchful, and always on the alert, guarding against not only the open enemies but the hidden ones as well;
又有人問,祂為何不把他們明明顯露出來,反倒把我們投入這番查究之中呢?乃是要叫我們儆醒,時常戒備,不僅防範明顯的仇敵,也提防那些隱藏的仇敵;
23:265
even those at whom Paul also hinted when he said that 'By fair speech they deceive the hearts of the guileless.'
Let us not then be troubled, when we see many such men existing even now; for this too Christ foretold from the outset.
For neither did He say, 'Punish them,' but, 'Be not harmed by them, do not fall into their power unguarded.'
Then, lest you should say that it is impossible to recognize such men, He again sets down an argument drawn from a human example, speaking thus:
'Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruits;
『豈能從荊棘上摘葡萄,從蒺藜裡摘無花果呢?照樣,凡好樹都結好果子;
23:270
but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruits.'
'A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruits, neither a corrupt tree bring forth good fruits.'
And what He means is this:
They have nothing gentle, nothing sweet;
他們毫無溫和,毫無甘甜;
23:274
the sheep is such only as far as the fleece;
那羊不過只有羊皮罷了;
23:275
wherefore also the discernment is easy.
And that you may not doubt even in the least, He compares to natural necessities the things which cannot come to be otherwise.
For 'the mind of the flesh is death;'
'for it is not subject to the law of God.'
But if He sets down the same thing a second time, it is not a mere repetition.
23:280
For lest anyone should say that the evil tree
bears evil fruits indeed, yet bears good ones also, and so makes the discernment difficult, the yield being twofold;
固然結壞果子,卻也結好果子,如此便使辨別成了難事,因為它的出產是雙重的;
23:282
for it bears only evil fruits, and could never bear good ones;
祂便說:它只結壞果子,斷不能結好果子;
23:283
even as also the contrary is true.
What then? Is there not a good man who becomes evil? And the reverse also holds true, and the lives of many are full of such examples.
But Christ does not say this, that it is impossible for the evil man to change, or that the good man cannot fall away;
然而基督並非是說惡人不可能改變,或好人不能墮落;
23:286
rather, that so long as one lives in wickedness, he will not be able to bring forth good fruit.
For while being evil he is indeed able to turn to virtue;
因為一個人雖然是惡的,卻仍能轉向德行;
23:288
but remaining in wickedness, he will not bear good fruit.
What then? Did not David, being good, bring forth evil fruit? Not while remaining good, but after he had been changed;
那又如何呢?大衛既是好人,豈不是結了壞果子嗎?他並非在仍為好人之時如此,乃是在他改變了之後;
23:290
for had he remained continually what he was, he would not have brought forth such fruit.
For assuredly it was not while abiding in the habit of virtue that he dared what he dared.
And these things He said also to stop the mouths of those who slander without reason, and to bridle the tongues of the evil-speakers.
For since many suspect the good on account of the evil, He said this to deprive them of all excuse.
For neither couldst thou say, 'I have been deceived and led astray;'
for indeed I have furnished thee with an exact discernment drawn from their works, having also charged thee to walk according to their deeds, and not to throw everything into confusion indiscriminately.
Then, since He did not command them to punish these men but only to guard against them, at once comforting those who were being ill-treated by them, and also frightening and reforming those others, He set up over them the punishment that comes from Himself, saying that 'Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.'
Then, making the word less burdensome, He added:
'So then, from their fruits ye shall know them;'
so that He might not seem to bring in the threat as the leading point, but in the guise of exhortation and counsel to shake their minds.
Here it seems to me that He also hints at the Jews, as displaying such fruits.
Wherefore also He reminded them of the words of John, sketching out their punishment for them by means of the very same terms.
For John too spoke these things, making mention to them of the axe, and of the tree being hewn down, and of the unquenchable fire.
And it seems indeed to be one single punishment, namely to be burned up;
這看來似乎只是一種刑罰,就是被焚燒;
23:304
but if one examine it accurately, these are two punishments.
For he who is burned assuredly also falls away from the kingdom;
因為那被焚燒的人,也必定從那國度中被摒棄;
23:306
and this punishment is more grievous than the other.
And I know indeed that many shudder only at hell;
我固然知道許多人只戰慄於地獄;
23:308
but I affirm that the falling away from that glory is a far bitterer punishment than hell.
And if it be impossible to set this forth in words, that is no marvel.
For neither do we know the blessedness of those good things, so as also to see clearly the misery that comes from being deprived of them;
因為我們既不曉得那些美善之物的福樂,也就無法清楚看見那因失去它們而來的悲慘;
23:311
since Paul, who knew these things clearly, knew that to fall away from the glory of Christ is more grievous than all things.
And this we shall know then, when we fall into the very experience of it.
But may we never suffer this, O only-begotten Child of God, nor ever have any experience of this incurable punishment.
For how great an evil it is to fall away from those good things, it is not possible to say clearly;
因為從那些美善之物中被摒棄是何等大的禍患,實在無法明說;
23:315
nevertheless, as far as I am able, I will strive and contend, by means of an illustration, to make it in some small measure manifest to you.
For let us suppose there is a wonderful child, who together with virtue possesses also the kingdom of the whole world, and is so virtuous in every respect that he is able to establish all men in the affection of a fatherly disposition toward him.
What then do you not suppose the father of this child would gladly suffer, so as not to be deprived of his company? What evil, small or great, would he not accept, so as to behold him and to enjoy him? This same thing, then, let us reckon also concerning that glory.
For not so dear and lovely is a child to his father, even were it ten thousand times virtuous, as is the attainment of those good things, and to depart and to be with Christ.
Insupportable too is hell, and that punishment.
Nevertheless, though one should set down ten thousand hells, he will say nothing to compare with falling away from that blessed glory, with being hated by Christ, with hearing 'I know you not,' with being accused
that 'when they saw Him hungering they fed Him not.'
For indeed it is better to endure ten thousand thunderbolts than to see that gentle countenance turning away from us, and that serene eye not enduring to look upon us.
For if He, when I was an enemy, and hated Him, and turned away from Him, so pursued me that He did not even spare Himself, but gave Himself over to death;
因為祂在我還作仇敵、還恨祂、還背棄祂的時候,竟這樣追尋我,甚至不惜捨了自己,反把自己交於死地;
23:324
when, after all those things, I should not even count Him worthy of bread as He hungers, with what eyes shall I henceforth behold Him? But consider here also His gentleness.
For neither does He speak of His benefactions, nor say that thou didst overlook Him who had done thee so many kindnesses.
Me, who brought thee from non-existence into being, who breathed into thee a soul, and set thee over all things that are on the earth, who for thy sake made earth and heaven and sea and air and all things that are; Me, who was dishonoured by thee, and was thought to be more dishonourable than the devil, and yet even so did not withdraw, but after these things devised ten thousand things; Me, who chose to become a servant, who was smitten and spat upon, who was slain, who died the most shameful death, who even above intercedeth for thee, who bestoweth upon thee the Spirit, who deemeth thee worthy of a kingdom, who promiseth such things, who willed to be thy head, and bridegroom, and garment, and house, and root, and food, and drink, and shepherd, and king, and brother, and who chose thee for His heir and joint-heir, who led thee from darkness into the authority of light.
For though He could say these things and more than these, He says none of them;
因為祂雖能說這些話,並且比這更多的話,卻一句也不說;
23:328
but what? Only the sin itself.
And herein He shows His love, and makes manifest the longing which He hath for thee.
For He did not say, 'Depart into the fire prepared for you,' but, 'that which is prepared for the devil.'
And first He tells of the wrongs they had done, yet not even so does He endure to recount them all, but only a few.
And before these He calls forth those who had done well, so that from this also He might show that He accuses them justly.
How, then, are these words not more grievous than any punishment? For if a man, seeing his benefactor perishing of hunger, would not overlook him;
那麼,這些話豈不比任何刑罰更為沉重嗎?因為若有人看見他的恩人正因飢餓而將死,也絕不會坐視不理;
23:334
and if he did overlook him, when reproached for it he would rather choose to sink into the earth than to hear such things in the presence of two or three friends;
而若他當真坐視不理,一旦因此受責備,他寧願鑽進地裡去,也不願在兩三個朋友面前聽見這樣的話;
23:335
what shall we suffer, hearing these things before the whole world—things He would not even then have uttered, had He not been eager to make His own defense? For that He brought them forward not to reproach but in His own defense, and to show that it was not in vain nor at random that He said to them, 'Depart from Me,' is plain from His unspeakable benefits.
For if He had wished to reproach them, He would have brought all those things into the midst;
因為祂若有意羞辱他們,就會把那一切都擺在眾人面前;
23:337
but as it is, He speaks only of what He Himself suffered.
Let us fear, then, beloved, to hear these words.
Life is no plaything;
人生並非兒戲;
23:340
or rather, the present life is a plaything, but the things to come are no play.
And perhaps life is not merely a plaything, but something even worse than this.
For it does not end in laughter, but brings much harm to those who are unwilling to order their own affairs with exactness.
For in what, tell me, do we differ from children who play at building houses—we who build our splendid houses? Or from them making their little feasts—we who live in luxury? In nothing, except that we do these things to our own punishment.
But if as yet we do not perceive the worthlessness of these things, it is no wonder;
然而,我們若至今仍看不出這些事的空虛無益,這也不足為奇;
23:345
for we have not yet become men;
因為我們還沒有長大成人;
23:346
but when we have become so, we shall know that all these are but children's toys.
Since, when we grow to manhood, we laugh at those things too;
既然當我們長大成人時,我們也嘲笑那些孩童的玩意;
23:348
but while we were children we thought them worthy of great earnestness, and gathering potsherds and mud we were no less proud than those who rear great walls.
Yet nonetheless it is straightway destroyed and falls down, and even were it to stand somewhere, it would be of no use to us—just as neither are these splendid houses.
For they could not receive the citizen of heaven, nor would he who has his homeland above endure to remain in them;
因為它們容不下天上的公民,而那以上頭為家鄉的人,也不願住在其中;
23:351
but just as we pull these down with our feet, so too does he overthrow them with his mind.
And just as we laugh at children weeping over the overthrow;
又正如我們嘲笑那些為玩物被拆毀而哭泣的孩童;
23:353
so also do these, when we lament over such things, not
only laugh, but also weep;
但嘲笑我們,也為我們哭泣;
23:355
since their affections are compassionate, and from this the harm is great.
How long shall we be dragged along the ground, priding ourselves on stones and timbers? How long shall we play? And would that we only played;
我們要在地上被拖行到幾時呢?竟以磚石木材為誇口?我們要玩耍到幾時呢?但願我們只是玩耍而已;
23:357
but as it is, we even betray our own salvation;
然而如今,我們甚至出賣了自己的救恩;
23:358
and just as children, when they spend their leisure in these things and neglect their letters, endure the utmost stripes;
又正如孩童,當他們把閒暇耗費在這些事上而荒廢了學業,就要受最嚴厲的鞭打;
23:359
so also we, spending all our zeal on these things, and then being required by our deeds to render an account of the spiritual lessons, and having nothing to offer, shall pay the uttermost penalty.
23:360
And there is no one to deliver;
並且無人能搭救;
23:361
not even were it a father, nor a brother, nor anyone whatsoever.
But all these things shall pass away, while the torment arising from them remains immortal and unceasing;
但這一切都要消逝,而由這些所生的痛苦卻永不朽壞、綿延不絕;
23:363
which indeed happens also in the case of children, the father utterly doing away with their childish toys because of their sloth, and setting them to weep continually.
And that you may learn that these things are of such a kind, let us bring into the midst that which above all seems most worthy of earnest pursuit—namely wealth—and let us set against it any virtue of the soul you please, and then above all you will see its worthlessness.
Let us suppose, then, that there are two men;
那麼,讓我們假設有兩個人;
23:366
and I do not yet speak of covetousness, but for the present of righteous wealth;
我暫且還不論貪婪,只論以正當方式得來的財富;
23:367
and of these two, let the one gather money, and sail the sea, and till the land, and devise many other modes of trade;
在這兩人中,讓一個聚斂錢財,航行海洋,耕種田地,並設計出許多別的經商門路;
23:368
although I know not whether, in doing these things, he is able to gain justly;
雖然我不知道,他在行這些事時,是否能以公義的方式獲利;
23:369
but nevertheless let it be granted and supposed that he gains just gains, and buys fields and slaves and all such things, and that no injustice attaches to these;
但無論如何,就算讓步並假定他所得的利是公義的,他買下田地、奴僕以及一切這類的東西,其中並無任何不義;
23:370
while the other, who possesses just as much, let him sell fields, let him sell houses, and vessels of gold and silver, and give to the needy, relieve the poor, tend the sick, loose those in distress, cast out those from bonds, set free those in the mines, bring down those from the gallows, deliver the captives from their punishment.
Of which portion, then, would you wish to be? And I have not yet spoken of the things to come, but for the present have told of the things here.
Of which, then, would you wish to be? Of him who gathers gold, or of him who looses calamities? Of him who buys fields, or of him who makes himself a haven for the human race? Of him who is clothed about with much gold, or of him who is crowned with countless blessings? Does not the one resemble some angel come down from heaven for the amendment of the rest of mankind, while the other is not even like a man, but like some child gathering all things in vain and at random? But if to grow rich justly is so ridiculous and of the utmost folly;
那麼,你願意屬於哪一位呢?是那聚斂金子的,還是那解除人苦難的?是那買田地的,還是那使自己成為人類避風港的?是那披戴大量金子的,還是那被無數頌讚所加冕的?前者豈不像是從天上降下、為要匡正其餘世人的天使,而後者卻連人也算不上,倒像是個徒然又隨意收集一切的孩童嗎?但若以公義的方式致富尚且如此可笑、又是極度的愚昧;
23:373
when not even righteousness is present, how is not such a one the most wretched of all? For if the laughter is so great when hell too is present and the fall from the kingdom, of how many lamentations would he be worthy, both living and dead?
But would you have us take in hand yet another portion of virtue? Then let us bring forward again another man who is in power, commanding all, clothed about with great dignity, having a splendid herald and girdle and lictors, and a great retinue of attendants.
Does not this seem great and blessed? Come then, and let us again set against him another, the man who bears wrong patiently, and is gentle and lowly and long-suffering;
這豈不顯得偉大又有福嗎?那麼來吧,讓我們再拿另一個人與他相比,就是那忍受冤屈、又溫柔謙卑、又恆久忍耐的人;
23:376
and let this man be insulted, be beaten, and bear it easily, and bless those who do such things.
Which, then, is the admirable one, tell me? He who is puffed up and inflamed, or he who is composed? Does not the one again resemble the powers above, which have great freedom from passion, while the other is like a bellows blown up, or a man with dropsy, and much inflammation? And the one like a spiritual physician, the other like a ridiculous child puffing out his cheeks? For why do you pride yourself, O man? Because you are borne aloft upon a chariot? Because a team of mules draws you? And what of this? For this same thing one may see happening to wood and to stones as well.
But is it because you are clothed about with fine garments? Yet behold the man who has put on virtue instead of garments, and you will see yourself like rotting grass, but him like a tree bearing wondrous fruit, and affording much delight to those who behold it.
For you carry about food for worms and moths, which, if they fasten upon you, will quickly make you naked of this adornment;
因為你所帶著的乃是蟲和蛀蟲的食物,這些一旦纏上你,很快就要使你脫盡這世上的裝飾,赤身露體;
23:380
(for indeed garments and gold and silver are, the one the threads of worms, the others earth and dust, and again earth, and nothing more;) but he who is clothed about with virtue has such a robe as neither moths, nor even death itself, can harm;
(因為衣裳、金子和銀子,前者不過是蟲的絲,後者不過是塵土與灰塵,最終仍歸於塵土,別無其他;)但那披戴美德的人,卻有這樣一件袍子,是連蛀蟲、甚至連死亡本身都不能損毀的;
23:381
For these virtues of the soul do not have their origin from the earth, but are the fruit of the Spirit;
因為靈魂的這些美德並非源於地土,乃是聖靈的果子;
23:382
therefore neither are they subject to the mouths of worms.
For indeed these garments are woven in heaven, where there is no moth, no worm, nor anything else of the kind.
Which, then, is better, tell me—to be rich, or to be poor? To be in power, or in dishonor? In luxury, or in hunger? It is quite plain: to be in honor, and in luxury, and in wealth.
If then you desire the realities, and not the mere names, forsaking the earth and the things in it, remove your dwelling to heaven;
那麼你若渴慕實質,而非徒有虛名,就當撇下地土和其上的一切,把你的居所遷往天上;
23:386
for the things here are a shadow, but the things there are realities immovable, and fixed, and beyond the reach of all.
Let us choose them, then, with all exactness, that we may both be delivered from the tumult of things here, and, having sailed into that calm haven, may appear with much freight and unspeakable riches of almsgiving;
所以,讓我們極其謹慎地揀選它們,好使我們既能脫離此世事物的紛擾,又在駛入那平靜的港口之後,帶著滿載的貨物、和說不盡的施捨之財而出現;
23:388
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might unto the ages of ages. Amen.
