Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets.
For who suspected this, or who accused Him, that He should make His answer to it? For neither out of what had been said was any such suspicion begotten;
因為有誰起了這疑心,又有誰控告祂,使祂需要就此作出回應呢?其實從祂先前所說的話中,並不會生出這樣的疑竇;
16:3
for to bid men be meek, and forbearing, and merciful, and pure in heart, and to contend for righteousness' sake, indicated nothing of the kind, but rather the very opposite.
Why then did He say this? Not without cause, nor at random;
那麼祂為何要說這話呢?並非無故,也非隨口而言;
16:5
but because He was about to lay down commandments greater than those of old, saying:
'Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time';
and to cut out a road to a certain divine and heavenly way of life;
並要開闢一條通往某種屬神、屬天生活方式的道路;
16:8
so that the strangeness of it might not trouble the souls of the hearers, and dispose them to rise up in dissension against the things said, He made use of this preliminary correction.
For though they were not fulfilling the law, yet nevertheless they were held by much conscientiousness toward it; and while daily overthrowing it in their deeds, they wished its letters to remain unmoved, and that no one should add anything more to them;
因為他們雖不遵行律法,卻對它懷有極深的顧忌之情;他們雖天天以行為破壞律法,卻願律法的字句永不更動,不許任何人再向其中添加甚麼;
16:10
or rather, they did endure their rulers adding to it, yet not for the better but for the worse.
For thus, by their own additions, they annulled the honour due to parents;
因為他們正是這樣藉著自己所添加的傳統,廢掉了當孝敬父母之理;
16:12
and many other of the injunctions laid down they dissolved by these unseasonable additions.
Since then Christ happened to be neither of the priestly tribe, and the things He was about to introduce were a kind of addition—not one that diminished, but one that heightened virtue—
foreseeing that both these things would trouble them, before He inscribed those wondrous laws, He casts out beforehand that which was about to lie hidden and lurking in their mind.
And what was it that lurked and stood in the way? They supposed that in saying these things He was acting to abolish the ancient ordinances.
This suspicion therefore He heals.
And not here only does He do this, but elsewhere again.
For since they thought Him to be against God on this ground—from His not keeping the Sabbath—healing this suspicion of theirs, there also again He sets forth defences: some befitting Himself, as when He says, 'My Father worketh, and I work';
因為他們認為祂與神為敵,是由於祂不守安息日;為醫治他們這樣的疑心,祂在那裡也照樣提出辯護:有些是與祂身分相稱的,正如祂說:「我父作事直到如今,我也作事」;
16:19
and others having much that is condescending, such as when He brings into the midst a sheep perishing on the Sabbath, and shows that for the sake of its safety the law is set in motion, and makes mention of circumcision, which likewise does this same thing again.
Wherefore indeed He often utters lowlier words, that He may do away with the appearance of being against God.
For this reason He who raised countless dead by a word alone, when He called Lazarus, added also a prayer;
為這緣故,那位單憑一句話就叫無數死人復活的主,在祂呼喚拉撒路時,卻加上了禱告;
16:22
then, lest this should show Him to be less than the One who begat Him, correcting the suspicion, He subjoined, that 'These things I said because of the multitude standing by, that they may believe that Thou didst send Me.'
And neither does He do all things as one acting by His own authority, that He may correct their weakness;
祂既不凡事都以己權行事,好糾正他們的軟弱;
16:24
nor does He do all things by praying, lest He leave to those who came after a ground for evil suspicion, as though He were weak and destitute of power;
也不凡事都藉禱告而行,免得給後來的人留下惡意猜疑的把柄,以為祂軟弱無能;
16:25
but He mingles these with those, and those with these.
And not even this does He do at random, but with the discretion that befits Him.
For while doing the greater works with authority, in the lesser He looks up to heaven.
For when loosing sins, and revealing hidden things, and opening Paradise, and driving out demons, and cleansing lepers, and bridling death, and raising countless dead, He did all things by command.
But when—a thing far less than these—He was causing many loaves to gush forth from a few, then He looked up to heaven, showing that it was not through weakness that He wrought this.
16:30
Ὁ γὰρ τὰ μείζονα δυνηθεὶς μετ' ἐξουσίας ποιῆσαι , πῶς ἂν ἐν τοῖς ἐλάττοσιν εὐχῆς ἐδεήθη;
For He who was able to do the greater things with authority, how should He have needed prayer in the lesser?
But, as I said, that He might silence their shamelessness, He does this.
The same then also in the case of the words: when you hear Him uttering lowly things, reason thus.
For many are the causes both of such words and of such deeds;
因為這類言語與這類作為,其緣由甚多;
16:34
such as: that He might not be thought alien from God; that He was training and healing all; that He was teaching humility; that He was clothed with flesh; that the Jews were not able to hear all things at once; that He was teaching them to speak nothing great concerning themselves.
For this reason, having Himself often spoken many lowly things concerning Himself, He leaves the great things to be spoken by others.
For He Himself, when discoursing with the Jews, said:
'Before Abraham was, I am';
but His disciple not so, rather: 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.'
Again, that He Himself made heaven and earth and sea, and all things visible and invisible, He Himself nowhere plainly said;
再者,論到天、地、海,並一切有形無形之物都是祂親自所造,祂自己卻無一處明明地說;
16:40
but the disciple, with much boldness, keeping back nothing, once and twice and many times says this, writing, 'All things were made through Him';
但那門徒卻大有膽量,毫無隱瞞,一次、兩次、多次地這樣說,寫道:「萬物是藉著祂造的」;
16:41
'and without Him was not anything made that was made.'
and again, 'He was in the world, and the world was made by Him.'
And why do you marvel if others have said greater things concerning Him than He said of Himself, seeing that, though He displayed many things through His works, He did not plainly declare them in words? For that He Himself made man, He showed clearly even through the blind man;
別人論到他所說的,比他自己所說的更為崇高,你何必希奇呢?既然他藉著許多作為顯明的事,卻不曾在言語中明明說出。因為他親自造了人,這一點他甚至藉著那瞎子也清楚顯明了;
16:44
but when His discourse concerned the fashioning of man in the beginning, He did not say, 'I made,' but 'He that made them made them male and female.'
Again, that He created the world and the things in it, He demonstrated through the fishes, through the wine, through the loaves, through the calm upon the sea, through the sunbeam which He turned away at the Cross, and through many other things;
再者,他創造了世界和其中的萬物,這一點他藉著魚、藉著酒、藉著餅、藉著海面的平靜、藉著他在十字架上使之收回的日光,並藉著其他許多的事顯明出來;
16:46
but in words He nowhere plainly declared this, yet the disciples continually proclaim it—both John, and Paul, and Peter.
For if even those men—who by night and by day heard Him discoursing, and beheld Him working wonders, and to whom He privately expounded many things, and on whom He bestowed such great power that they even raised the dead, and whom He made so perfect that they forsook all for His sake—if these, after so great virtue and heavenly wisdom, were not able to bear all things before the supply of the Spirit,
因為那些人,晝夜聽他講論,親眼看他行神蹟,又蒙他私下講解許多事,並得著如此大的能力,甚至能叫死人復活,又被他造就得如此完全,以致為他的緣故撇下一切——這些人,經過如此大的德行與屬天的智慧之後,尚且在聖靈的恩賜臨到之前不能擔當一切事;
16:48
how could a Jewish populace, destitute of understanding, falling far short of such virtue, and coming upon the things done or spoken only by chance, ever have been persuaded that He was not alien to the God of the universe, unless He had employed such great condescension in all things? For this very reason, when He was abrogating the Sabbath, He did not introduce such a law as a leading principle, but framed manifold and many defenses.
But if, when about to set aside a single commandment, He employed so great an economy of words, that He might not smite those who heard;
但他既然在要止息一條誡命時,尚且運用如此謹慎的言語安排,免得觸犯聽見的人;
16:50
much more, when adding to the whole law another entire body of legislation, did He require much preparation and careful tending, so as not to disturb those who were then listening.
For this reason too, everywhere He is manifestly seen instructing them only cautiously concerning His own Godhead.
For if the addition to the law so greatly disturbed them, much more would His declaring Himself to be God.
Therefore He utters many things far beneath His own dignity;
所以他說了許多遠低於他自己尊榮的話;
16:54
and here too, being about to proceed to the addition to the law, He employed much preparatory correction.
For not once only did He say, 'I do not abolish the law,' but He took it up a second time again, and added something else yet greater.
For having said, 'Think not that I am come to destroy,' He added, 'I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.'
And this not only stops the shamelessness of the Jews, but also sews up the mouths of the heretics who say that the Old Testament is of the devil.
For if Christ came to overthrow that one's tyranny, how is it that He not only does not abolish this law, but even fulfils it? For He did not merely say, 'I do not destroy';
因為基督若是為要推翻那惡者的暴政而來,怎會不但不廢除這律法,反而成全它呢?他並非只說「我不廢除」;
16:59
which would have been the mark of one not merely not opposing it, but even upholding and confirming it.
16:60
'And how,' one may say, 'did He not destroy it?'
16:61
and how too did He fulfil either the law
or the prophets? The prophets indeed, in that He confirmed by His works all the things spoken concerning Him;
或是眾先知呢?他成全眾先知,是因他藉著自己的作為證實了一切論到他所說的話;
16:63
wherefore also in each instance the evangelist would say:
'That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet.'
both when He was born, and when the children sang the wondrous hymn unto Him, and when He sat upon the ass, and in many other cases He fulfilled this same thing;
無論是他降生的時候,還是孩童向他歌唱那奇妙的頌讚之時,又是他騎驢之時,並在其他許多的事上,他都成全了這同一件事;
16:66
all of which would have remained unfulfilled, had He not come.
But the law He fulfilled not in one way only, but also in a second and a third manner.
In one way, by transgressing none of the legal ordinances.
For that He fulfilled it all, hear what He says to John:
'For thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.'
'Which of you convicteth me of sin?' And again to the disciples:
'The ruler of this world cometh, and findeth nothing in me.'
And the prophet also from of old declared that 'He did no sin.'
In one way, then, He fulfilled it in this manner;
如此說來,他以這種方式成全了律法;
16:75
and in another, by doing this through us as well.
For the marvelous thing is this, that not only did He Himself fulfil it, but He also bestowed this upon us.
Which also Paul, making it plain, declared:
'That Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.'
And he said too that He 'condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh.'
'Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid.'
For since the law was zealous for this, to make man righteous, but was too weak, He Himself, having come and introduced the way of righteousness through faith, established the law's purpose;
因為律法所熱切追求的,正是要使人稱義,卻無力做到;他親自來了,引進那藉著信而來的稱義之道,便成全了律法的旨意;
16:82
and what that one could not accomplish through the letter, this He Himself accomplished through faith.
'I am not come to destroy the law.'
But if one should examine it carefully, one will also find yet a third manner according to which this came to pass.
What manner is that? That of the legislation to come, which He was about to deliver.
For the things He was saying were not an abolition of the former ones, but an intensifying and a fulfilling.
For not to be angry is not an abolition of 'Thou shalt not kill,' but a fulfilling and a greater security;
因為「不可動怒」並非廢除「不可殺人」,乃是成全,並且是更周全的保障;
16:88
wherefore also, sowing beforehand the seeds of these things unsuspected at that time, when it was about to be more plainly suspected of contradiction from the comparison of the old and new ordinances, He employed the preparatory correction.
For enigmatically indeed He had already laid them down through the things spoken.
For 'Blessed are the poor' is the same as 'not to be angry';
因為「虛心的人有福了」與「不可動怒」是同一件事;
16:91
and 'Blessed are the pure in heart' is the same as not looking upon a woman to lust after her;
「清心的人有福了」與「不可注視婦女而動淫念」是同一件事;
16:92
and not to lay up treasures upon the earth accords with 'Blessed are the merciful';
「不可為自己在地上積攢財寶」與「憐恤人的人有福了」相互應和;
16:93
and to mourn, and to be persecuted, and to be reviled, is equivalent to entering through the narrow gate;
至於哀慟、受逼迫、被辱罵,則等同於從那窄門進去;
16:94
and to hunger and thirst after righteousness is nothing else than that which afterwards He says: 'Whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye also unto them.'
And having blessed the peacemaker, He said almost the same thing again, when He commanded to leave the gift and to hasten to be reconciled with him that is grieved, and to be kindly disposed toward one's adversary.
But there He set forth the prizes of those who do rightly, while here He set forth the punishments of those who do not act.
Wherefore there He said that the meek shall inherit the earth;
所以在那裡他說,溫柔的人必承受地土;
16:98
but here, that whosoever calleth his brother a fool shall be in danger of the hell of fire.
And there, that the pure in heart shall see God;
在那裡說,清心的人必得見神;
16:100
but here, that he who looks unchastely is already a consummate adulterer.
And having there called the peacemakers sons of God, here He strikes fear from another quarter, saying:
'Lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge.'
So too, having blessed those that mourn and those that are persecuted in the earlier part, in the part after this, establishing this same thing, He threatens destruction to those who come not by this way;
照樣,他既在前面稱那哀慟的人和受逼迫的人為有福,在其後又確立這同一件事,向那些不肯走這條路的人恐嚇滅亡;
16:104
for those who walk through the broad way, He says, are there brought to ruin.
And 'Ye cannot serve God and mammon' seems to me to be the same as 'Blessed are the merciful,' and 'They that hunger after righteousness.'
But, as I said, since He is about to state these things more distinctly—and not only more distinctly, but also to add still more to the things spoken
(for He no longer seeks a merciful man only, but bids him even part with his coat;
(因為他不再只尋求一個憐恤人的人,反而吩咐人連內衣也要讓給人;
16:108
nor merely a meek man, but also to turn the other cheek to him that wishes to smite)—He first removes the apparent contradiction.
For this reason, as I said before, He did not utter this once only, but a second time as well.
For having said, 'Think not that I am come to destroy,' He added:
'I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.'
'Though heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or a single stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all things be accomplished.'
And what He means is this:
It is impossible that it should remain unfulfilled; rather, even the very smallest part of it must be fulfilled.
This very thing He Himself did, bringing it to completion with all exactness.
But here He hints to us that the whole world too shall be transformed.
And He did not set this down without purpose, but that He might rouse the hearer, and show that He was justly introducing another manner of life;
祂並非隨意提及此事,乃是要激勵聽者,並顯明祂公義地引入了另一種生活方式;
16:118
since indeed all the things of creation are destined to be transformed, and the race of men is to be called to another homeland and to a loftier preparation of life.
'Whosoever therefore shall loose one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, he shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven.'
For since He had freed Himself from the wicked suspicion, and had stopped the mouths of those who wished to gainsay Him, then at length He also strikes fear, and lays down a most weighty threat on behalf of the legislation that was to come.
For that He spoke not concerning the old laws, but concerning those which He Himself was about to legislate, hear what follows.
'Except your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.'
But if He were threatening concerning the old laws, how could He say, 'Except it exceed'? For those who did the very same things which those men did, it was not possible to exceed according to the measure of righteousness.
But what was the 'more'? To be not angry, and not to look upon a woman unchastely.
For what reason then did He call them least, seeing they are so great and lofty? Because He Himself was about to introduce the legislation.
For just as He humbled Himself, and in many places speaks modestly concerning Himself,
so also concerning His own legislation, teaching us in this too everywhere to practice moderation.
And besides, since there seemed to be some suspicion of innovation, He used the word sparingly for the present.
But when you hear 'least in the kingdom of heaven,' suspect nothing else than hell and punishment.
For He is wont to speak of the kingdom not only as the enjoyment, but also as the time of the resurrection, and that fearful coming.
For else how could it stand to reason, that he who called his brother fool, and transgressed one commandment, should fall into hell,
while he who breaks all of them, and leads others into this, should be in the kingdom? It is not this then that He means, but that in that time he shall be least, cast out, last;
而那廢掉一切誡命、又引誘別人如此行的人,反倒在國裡呢?所以祂所指的並非此意,乃是說在那時候他要成為最小的,被丟棄的,末後的;
16:133
and he that is last shall by all means then fall into hell.
For being God, He foreknew the slothfulness of the many, and that some would think the things spoken to be matters of mere exaggeration, and would reason about the laws, and say:
'If then one call another fool, is he punished? If then one merely look, does he become an adulterer?' Therefore, to do away beforehand with this contempt, He laid down a most weighty threat upon both, both upon those who transgress, and upon those who lead others into this.
Knowing therefore the threat, let us neither transgress ourselves, nor slacken those who wish to keep these things.
'But whosoever shall do and teach,' He says, 'the same shall be called great.'
For we must be useful not only to ourselves, but also to others.
For the reward is not equal for him who sets himself aright, and for him who along with himself adds another also.
For just as to teach without doing condemns the teacher (for 'Thou that teachest another,' He says, 'teachest thou not thyself?'),
so to do indeed, but not to guide others, lessens the reward.
One must therefore be perfect in both, and having first set oneself aright, thus also proceed to the care of others.
For this reason He too set doing before teaching, showing that thus
one will most of all be able to teach, but in no other way.
'Physician, heal thyself.'
For he who has not been able to teach himself, and yet attempts to correct others, will have many to make sport of him;
因為那連自己都不能教導、卻試圖矯正別人的人,必有許多人譏笑他;
16:147
or rather, such a one will not even be able to teach, since his own deeds cry out against him.
But if he be perfected on both sides, 'he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.'
'Except your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.'
Here by 'righteousness' He means all virtue, just as also, when discoursing concerning Job, He said:
'And there was a man blameless, righteous.'
In this same sense Paul also called that man righteous, for whom he said no law was even laid down:
'For the law is not laid down for a righteous man,' he says.
And in many other places one may find this word applied to virtue in general.
But do thou consider the increase of grace, in that He wills the newly-come disciples to be better than the teachers of the Old Covenant.
For by 'scribes and Pharisees' here He did not simply mean the lawless, but those who kept the law aright;
因為祂在此所說的「文士和法利賽人」,並非單指那不法的人,乃是指那些正直守法的人;
16:157
for unless they had kept it aright, He would not have said they had righteousness, nor would He have compared that which is not with that which is.
And observe here too how He establishes the Old Covenant, by making a comparison of this with that;
你也當在此觀察祂如何肯定舊約,將新約與舊約作比較;
16:159
which shows it to be of the same kindred and akin;
這正顯明舊約與新約是同宗同族的;
16:160
for the more and the less are of the same kind.
He does not therefore disparage the Old Covenant, but wills it to be heightened.
For if it were evil, He would not have sought the 'more,' nor would He have set it aright, but would have cast it out.
He says, if it be such, does it not bring one into the kingdom? Now it does not bring in those who live after the coming of Christ, inasmuch as they have partaken of greater power, and owe a greater striving;
有人說:它若是這樣,豈不就領人進天國嗎?如今它並不領那些在基督降臨之後生活的人進去,因為他們既已領受更大的能力,就當有更大的爭戰;
16:164
since indeed all its own nurslings it does bring in.
For 'Many,' He says, 'shall come from the east and the west, and shall recline in the bosoms of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.'
And Lazarus too, enjoying the great prizes, appears dwelling in that man's bosom.
And all who shone with surpassing brightness in the Old Covenant, shone all of them through this.
And Christ Himself, had it been something evil and alien, would not have come and fulfilled it all.
For if He did this only in order to draw the Jews to Himself, and not so as to show that it was akin to the New and in harmony with it;
因為祂若只是為著吸引猶太人歸向自己而如此行,並非要顯明舊約與新約是同宗、彼此相合的;
16:170
for what reason did He not also fulfill the customs and usages of the Greeks, that He might draw the Greeks?
So that from every side it is plain, that it is not because they are evil that He does not bring them in, but because it is the season for greater commandments.
And if it be more imperfect than the New, not even this shows it to be evil;
縱使舊約比新約較為不完全,這也並不顯明它是惡的;
16:173
since in this respect the New too will suffer the same thing.
For its knowledge too, compared with that which is to come, is something partial and imperfect, and is done away when that other has come;
因為連新約的知識,若與那將要來的相比,也不過是局部的、不完全的,及至那全備的來到,便要歸於無有;
16:175
'For when that which is perfect is come,' He says, 'then that which is in part shall be done away;'
which is the very thing that the Old suffered at the hands of the New.
But we shall not on this account disparage it, though this too shall give place, when we attain the kingdom;
然而我們卻不因此貶低新約,縱然當我們得著天國時,它也要退讓;
16:178
'For then,' He says, 'that which is in part shall be done away;'
yet nevertheless we call it great.
Since therefore both the prizes are greater, and the power from the Spirit is more abundant, with good reason He also requires greater gifts of grace.
For it is no longer a land flowing with milk and honey, nor a sleek old age, nor abundance of children, nor corn and wine, nor flocks and herds;
因為所應許的不再是流奶與蜜之地,不再是豐潤的高壽,不再是子孫眾多,不再是五穀與新酒,也不再是羊群與牛群;
16:182
but heaven, and the good things in the heavens, and adoption as sons, and brotherhood with the Only-begotten, and fellowship in the inheritance, and to be glorified together and to reign together, and those ten thousand rewards.
And that we have also enjoyed greater help, hear Paul when he says:
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life has set me free from the law of sin and of death.
Having therefore threatened those who transgress, and set great rewards before those who do rightly, and having shown that it is with justice
that He requires more of us than the former measures, He then begins His legislation, not simply, but by way of comparison with the ancient ordinances;
向我們要求比先前的標準更多;於是祂便開始頒佈律法,並非平白無故,而是藉著與古時律例相比較的方式;
16:188
wishing to show these two things: that He is not at variance with the former ordinances, but rather in full agreement with them when He legislates these things; and that with good reason and most opportunely He adds the latter to those former ones.
And that this may become still clearer, let us listen to the very words of the Lawgiver.
What then does He Himself say? You have heard that it was said to them of old time:
And yet He who gave those things also is the very same;
然而那賜下先前那些律法的,正是祂自己;
16:192
but for the present He sets them down impersonally.
For if He had said, You have heard that I said to them of old time, the saying would have been hard to accept, and would have offended all His hearers;
因為祂若說「你們聽見我對古人所說的」,這話便難以被人接受,且會冒犯所有聽見的人;
16:194
and if again He had said, You have heard that it was said to them of old time by My Father, and then added, But I say to you, the presumption would have seemed the greater.
Therefore He simply set it down, establishing from it one thing only: to show that He came speaking these things at the fitting season.
For by saying, It was said to them of old time, He indicated the long time since they had received this commandment.
And this He did in order to shame the hearer who shrank back from going forth to the higher things beyond the earlier injunctions;
祂這樣做,是為要使那退縮不願邁向比先前規條更崇高之事的聽者感到羞愧;
16:198
as a teacher might say to a lazy child:
Do you not know how much time you have spent studying syllables? This too He was hinting at by the name of 'the ancients', calling them henceforth to the greater of the teachings, as though He were saying:
You have sufficient time spent in studying these things, and it now behooves you to press on toward things higher than these.
And well did He not confound the order of the commandments, but begin with the former one first, from which the Law also began;
祂沒有攪亂諸誡命的次序,而是從先前那條、也就是律法所起始的那一條先開始,這樣做甚是恰當;
16:202
for this too belongs to one who is showing the harmony between them.
But I say to you, that whoever is angry with his brother without cause shall be liable to the judgment.
Did you see authority perfect and complete? Did you see a bearing befitting a lawgiver? For which of the prophets ever spoke thus? Which of the righteous? Which of the patriarchs? Not one.
For those men proclaimed the things of the Master, but He proclaims the things of the Father.
But when I say the things of the Father, I say His own things;
然而當我說「父的話」時,我所說的正是祂自己的話;
16:207
for My things, He says, are Yours, and Yours are Mine.
And those men legislated for their fellow-servants, but He for His own servants.
Let us then ask those who cast out the Law:
Is the not being angry contrary to the not killing, or rather is it the perfecting and confirming of that command? It is quite evident that this is the fulfillment of that, and greater for its sake.
For he who is not carried away into wrath will much more abstain from murder;
因為那不被怒氣沖昏頭腦的人,必更加遠離殺人之事;
16:212
and he who bridles his temper will much more keep his hands to himself.
For the root of murder is anger.
He therefore who cuts out the root will much more destroy the branches;
所以那砍除根子的人,必更加除滅那些枝子;
16:215
or rather, he will not even allow them to sprout at all in the first place.
Therefore it was not for the abolition of the Law, but for a greater safeguarding of it, that He legislated these things.
For with what intent did the Law command these things? Was it not that no one might kill his neighbor? Therefore it was he who fought against the Law who commanded killing;
律法頒下這些命令,其用意何在呢?豈不是要使無人殺害鄰舍嗎?如此說來,凡吩咐殺人的,才是與律法作對的人;
16:218
for killing is the opposite of not killing;
因為殺人正與不殺人相反;
16:219
but if He does not even permit anger, He rather establishes that which the Law intended.
For he who studies not to kill will not abstain from murder in the same degree as he who has done away with anger itself;
因為那力求不殺人的,其遠離殺人的程度,比不上那連怒氣本身都已除滅的人;
16:221
for the latter stands farther from the daring deed.
But that we may catch them in yet another way, let us bring into the midst all that they say.
What then are the things they say? They say that the God who made the world, who makes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, who sends rain on the just and the unjust, is some evil being.
But the more moderate of them, forsooth, decline this, and while saying that He is just, they deprive Him of being good;
他們當中那些自命較為溫和的人固然摒棄此說,卻在稱祂為公義的同時,剝奪了祂為良善的屬性;
16:225
and they assign to Christ another Father, one who does not exist, nor made any of the things that are.
And they say that the one who is not good remains in his own things and keeps to what is his;
他們說:那不良善的一位安於自己的境界,持守屬自己的事物;
16:227
but that the good one covets what belongs to another, and of a sudden desires to become the savior of those things of which he was not the maker.
Do you see the children of the devil, how they speak from the fountain of their father, alienating the creation from God, when John cries aloud that He came to His own;
你可看見魔鬼的兒女,他們如何從自己父親的源頭發出言語,把受造之物與神隔絕,儘管約翰高聲宣告說:祂到自己的地方來;
16:229
and, The world was made by Him? Then, examining the
law in the Old Testament, the one which commands to pluck out an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, they immediately leap upon it, saying:
And how could He who says these things be good? What then do we say to this? That it is a very great form of loving-kindness.
For He did not set down this law in order that we might pluck out one another's eyes;
因為祂設立這律法,並非為要叫我們彼此剜出眼睛;
16:233
but that, out of fear of suffering at the hands of others, we might refrain from doing any such thing to others.
Just as, therefore, He threatened the Ninevites with overthrow, not that He might destroy them (for if He had wished this, He ought to have kept silent), but that, having made them better through fear, He might stay His wrath;
正如祂威嚇尼尼微人說要傾覆他們,並非為要毀滅他們(因為祂若真願如此,就該緘默不言),而是要藉著恐懼使他們變好,從而止息祂的忿怒;
16:235
so also for those who readily rush upon others' eyes He appointed a punishment, in order that, even if of their own good will they were unwilling to abstain from cruelty, they might be hindered by fear from injuring the sight of their neighbors.
But if that be cruelty, then so also is the restraining of the murderer, and the hindering of the adulterer.
But these are the words of senseless men, and of those raving with the utmost madness.
For I am so far from saying that these things are cruelty, that I would even affirm the contrary of them to be unlawful, according to human reasoning.
For you say that, because He commanded an eye to be plucked out for an eye, He is therefore cruel;
因為你說:祂既吩咐以眼還眼地剜出眼睛,就因此是殘忍的;
16:240
but I say that, if He had not commanded this, then He would have seemed to the many to be that very thing which you say.
For let us suppose, for the sake of argument, that the whole Law were abolished, and that no one feared the punishment coming from it, but that it were permitted to all the wicked to practice their ways with every impunity — to adulterers, and murderers, and thieves, and perjurers, and parricides;
讓我們姑且為論證起見假設:整部律法都被廢除了,無人再懼怕由律法而來的刑罰,反倒容許所有惡人毫無顧忌、暢行其道——姦夫、兇手、盜賊、起假誓的、弒親的都是如此;
16:242
would not everything have been turned upside down, and would not cities, and market-places, and houses, and land, and sea, and the whole inhabited world have been filled with ten thousand pollutions and murders? It is surely plain to everyone.
For if, even while there are laws and fear and threatening, the wicked purposes are scarcely held in check;
因為若連在有律法、有恐懼、有威嚇的情況下,那些邪惡的心意尚且難以被約束;
16:244
if this safeguard too had been done away, what would there be to hinder men from choosing wickedness? And how great a ruin would not have burst in upon human life? For it is not only cruelty to allow the wicked to do what they will;
那麼若連這保障也被撤除,還有甚麼能攔阻人揀選作惡呢?又有何等的毀壞不會闖入人的生活呢?因為容許惡人任意妄為,這還不只是殘忍而已;
16:245
but there is also another thing no less than this, namely, to overlook without providence the one who has done no wrong, yet is suffering evil idly and in vain.
For tell me: if someone were to gather wicked men from every quarter, and arm them with swords, and command them to go about through the whole city and slaughter all whom they met, would there be anything more brutal than this? And what if some other man should bind and imprison with all severity those armed by the former, and should snatch from the hands of those lawless men the ones who were about to be slaughtered;
請你告訴我:假若有人從各處聚集惡人,用刀劍武裝他們,吩咐他們走遍全城,將所遇見的人盡都殺戮,還有甚麼比這更兇殘的嗎?那又如何呢?假若另有一人,把那被前者武裝起來的人極其嚴厲地捆綁監禁,又從那些不法之徒手中奪回那些將要被宰殺的人;
16:247
would there be anything more loving to mankind than this? Now transfer these illustrations to the Law also.
For He who commands that an eye be plucked out for an eye cast fear, as a kind of strong bond, into the souls of the wicked, and resembles the one who imprisons those sword-bearers;
因為那吩咐以眼還眼地剜出眼睛的,乃是把恐懼作為某種堅固的鎖鏈投進惡人的心裡,正如那監禁持刀之徒的人一樣;
16:249
but he who appoints no punishment for them all but arms them with impunity, and imitates the one who put the swords into their hands and let them loose against the whole city.
Do you see how these injunctions are not only free from cruelty, but full of much loving-kindness? But if on this account you call the Lawgiver harsh and burdensome, tell me, which is the more toilsome and burdensome: not to kill, or not even to be angry? Which is the more severe: he who exacts penalties for murder, or he who does so even for anger; he who subjects the adulterer to punishment after the deed, or he who commands that penalties be paid even for the desire itself, and penalties undying? Do you see that the argument has been turned round to the very opposite for them? And the God of the Old Testament, whom they say to be cruel, will be found gentle and mild;
你可看見這些命令不僅毫無殘忍,反倒滿有豐盛的仁愛嗎?但你若因此稱那立法者為嚴苛、為累人的,那麼請告訴我:哪一樣更費力、更沉重呢?是不殺人,還是連怒也不動?哪一位更嚴厲呢?是那追討殺人之罪的,還是那連動怒也要追討的;是那在姦淫之事既成後才施刑於姦夫的,還是那吩咐連情慾本身也要受罰、且是永不止息之刑罰的?你可看見這番論證已在他們身上翻轉成完全相反的了嗎?如此,他們所稱為殘忍的舊約之神,反倒要顯為溫柔慈和的;
16:251
while the God of the New, whom they confess to be good, will, according to their folly, be burdensome and harsh.
For we affirm that one and the same is the lawgiver of both Testaments, who ordered all things toward what was fitting, and adapted the difference of each body of legislation to the difference of the times.
Therefore neither were those commandments cruel, nor are these burdensome and oppressive; rather, they belong to one and the same providential care.
For that He Himself also gave the Old Testament, hear what the Prophet says—
or rather, what need is there to say 'that one and this one'?
'I will establish for you a covenant, not according to the covenant which I made with your fathers.'
But if he who is sick with the disease of the Manichaeans will not accept these words, let him hear Paul saying this very same thing again:
'For Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman, and one by the free woman.'
'Now these are two covenants.'
As therefore in that case the women were different, but the husband one;
所以正如在那件事上,婦人不同,丈夫卻是同一位;
16:261
so also here the covenants are two, but the lawgiver one.
And that you may learn that they proceeded from one and the same gentleness, there He says, 'An eye for an eye';
為要使你知道,這一切都出於同一份、同一樣的仁慈,祂在那裡說:『以眼還眼』;
16:263
but here, 'If anyone strike you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.'
For just as there He brings the wrongdoer to sobriety by the fear of suffering, so also here.
'And how,' one asks, 'does He who commands to offer him the other cheek also do this?' And what of that? For He did not enjoin this to loosen the fear, but by commanding to offer it, He bids the striker take his fill of the whole matter;
有人問:『那麼,吩咐把另一邊臉也遞上去的那一位,怎能也達到這效果呢?』這又有何妨?因為祂吩咐這事,並非要削弱那恐懼,而是藉著命人遞上另一邊臉,讓那打人的把整件事嚐個夠;
16:266
nor did He say, 'That man remains unpunished,' but, 'You, do not exact vengeance';
祂也沒有說『那人可以不受懲罰』,而是說『你不可施行報復』;
16:267
at the same time both more greatly frightening the one who persists in striking, and consoling the one who is struck.
But these things, as one might say, have been spoken by us in passing concerning all the commandments.
It is necessary, however, to come to the matter set before us, and to hold to the sequence of what was said earlier.
'He who is angry with his brother without cause shall be liable to the judgment,' He says.
For He did not utterly do away with the thing;
因為祂並沒有全然除掉這件事;
16:272
first, because it is not possible for one who is a human being to be freed from passions;
首先,因為身為人是不可能全然脫離情感的;
16:273
but though it is possible to master them, it is impracticable to be entirely without them;
雖然能夠制伏它們,卻絕無可能完全沒有它們;
16:274
and next, because this passion is even useful, if we know how to make use of it at the appropriate time.
Consider, at any rate, how great good the anger of Paul wrought, that anger which arose then against the Corinthians.
For this both delivered them from a great corruption;
因為這怒氣既救他們脫離了極大的敗壞;
16:277
and again by this He recovered the nation of the Galatians which had fallen away, and yet others more than these.
What then is the fitting occasion for anger? When we do not avenge ourselves, but restrain others who are running riot, and turn back those who are careless.
And what is the unfitting one? When we do this in avenging ourselves.
This very thing, then, Paul also forbade when he said, 'Avenge not yourselves, beloved, but give place to wrath.'
When we contend over money.
For this too He did away with, saying:
'Why do you not rather suffer wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be defrauded?' For as this anger is superfluous, so that other is necessary and profitable.
But the many do the opposite: growing savage when they themselves are wronged, but becoming slack and soft whenever they see another being maltreated;
然而許多人所行的正相反:自己受屈時便暴怒如野獸,看見別人受欺凌時卻鬆懈軟弱;
16:285
both of which are contrary to the laws of the Gospel.
It is not, then, being angry that is unlawful, but doing it out of season.
For this reason the Prophet also said:
16:288
'Be angry, and sin not.'
'And whoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be liable to the council.'
By 'council' here He means the tribunal of the Hebrews;
這裡所說的『公會』,指的是希伯來人的議事法庭;
16:291
and He has set it down now, so that He might not everywhere seem to be introducing strange and novel things.
Now this word 'Raca' is not an expression of great insult, but rather of a certain contempt and slight on the part of the one who says it.
For just as we, when giving orders to servants or to some of our inferiors, say:
'Go away, you; say to so-and-so, you'—
so also those who use the Syrian tongue say 'Raca,' putting this in place of 'You.'
But God, who loves mankind, roots up even the smallest things, commanding us to treat one another becomingly and with the honor that is due, and so that through these things the greater faults too may be done away with.
'But whoever shall say, You fool, shall be liable to the hell of fire.'
To many this command has seemed heavy and burdensome, that for a mere word we should have to pay so great a penalty;
在許多人看來,這條命令似乎沉重難擔,竟要為一句空言付上如此重的刑罰;
16:299
and some even say that it was spoken rather by way of exaggeration.
But I fear lest, deceiving ourselves here with words, we there endure by our deeds the uttermost punishment.
For why, tell me, does the command seem burdensome? Do you not know that most punishments and sins have their beginning from words?
For blasphemies come through words, and denials through words, and revilings, and insults, and false oaths, and
16:303
false witness [and murder].
Do not therefore look at it as being a mere word;
因此,不要只把它看作一句空言;
16:305
but examine this—whether it does not carry great danger.
Or are you ignorant that in the season of enmity, when wrath is kindled and the soul is inflamed, even the smallest thing appears great, and what is not very insulting seems burdensome? And often these small things have given birth to murder, and have overthrown whole cities.
For just as, when friendship exists, even oppressive things are light;
因為正如在有友愛之時,連沉重的事也變得輕省;
16:308
so, when enmity underlies, even small things appear intolerable;
照樣,在暗藏仇恨之時,連小事也顯得無法忍受;
16:309
and even if a thing be said simply, it is thought to have been spoken with an evil suspicion.
And just as in the case of fire, if the spark be small, even though countless logs lie beside it, it does not easily take hold of them;
又正如在火的情形上,若火星微小,縱有無數木柴堆在旁邊,火也不容易延燒到它們;
16:311
but if the flame become fierce and high, it lays hold not only of wood, but also of stones and of every kind of material that falls in its way, and by the very things wont to quench it, it is kindled the more greatly;
但若火焰變得猛烈而高漲,就不僅吞噬木柴,連石頭和一切落入其中的材料都輕易攫取,甚至藉著那些素常能撲滅它的東西,火勢反倒燒得更旺;
16:312
(for some say that at such a time not only wood and tow and other combustible things, but even water dashed upon it rather fans its power)—
16:313
so indeed it is also with anger;
怒氣的情形實在也是如此;
16:314
whatever one may utter becomes at once fuel for this wicked fire.
All these things Christ was checking beforehand, and He condemned the one who is angry without cause to the judgment (wherefore also He said, 'He who is angry shall be liable to the judgment'), but the one who says, Raca, to the council.
For this reason, to the one who calls another a fool He added the fire of hell, now naming the name of hell for the first time.
For having previously discoursed much concerning the kingdom, He then made mention of this;
因為祂先前已多次論及天國,這時才提到地獄;
16:318
showing that the one belongs to His own love for mankind and good will, but the other to our own slothfulness.
And see how by little and little He advances in the punishments, all but making His defense to you, and showing that He Himself desires to threaten nothing of the kind, but that it is we who drag Him toward such sentences.
Be not angry in vain, since you are liable to the judgment.
16:321
You have despised the former.
it has straightway led you on to insolent abuse; for you called your brother 'Raca.'
For you called your brother 'Raca.'
Again I have appointed another penalty, the council.
But if, disregarding even this, you advance to what is yet more grievous, I no longer punish you with these moderate penalties, but with the immortal chastisement of hell, lest hereafter you should even leap forward unto murder.
For there is nothing, nothing more intolerable than insolent abuse, and nothing which is more able to sting a man's soul.
And when the very word of the insult is more wounding, the fire becomes twofold.
Do not, therefore, think it a trifling thing to call another a fool.
For when you take away from your brother that whereby we differ from the brute beasts, and whereby above all we are human—namely reason and understanding—you have stripped him of all his nobility.
Let us not, then, attend simply to the words, but placing ourselves amid the very deeds and the passion involved, let us reckon how great a wound this word inflicts, and unto how great an evil it advances.
For this reason Paul also cast out of the kingdom not only adulterers and the effeminate, but revilers as well;
為此,保羅也不僅把姦淫的和作孌童的排除在國度之外,也把辱罵人的排除在外;
16:332
for the reviler mars the beauty of love, and wraps his neighbour about with countless miseries, and works lasting enmities, and rends asunder the members of Christ, and day by day drives away that peace which is dear to God, giving the devil much room through his insults, and making him stronger.
For this reason Christ also, cutting away the sinews of the devil's power, introduced this law.
For much is His discourse concerning love.
For love is the mother of all good things, and the badge of the disciples, and that which holds together all our concerns—this above all else it is.
With good reason, therefore, does He with much vehemence take away the roots and the springs of the enmity which mars it.
Do not, then, suppose that these sayings involve some exaggeration, but considering the good results that come from them, marvel at the mildness of these laws.
For nothing is so earnestly sought by God as that we should be united and bound fast to one another.
For this reason, both by Himself and by His disciples—both those in the New and those in the—
the Old Testament, He makes much discourse concerning this commandment, and is a fierce avenger and chastiser of those who despise the matter.
For nothing so brings in and roots all wickedness as the destruction of love.
'When iniquity shall abound, the love of the many shall wax cold.'
Thus Cain became a slayer of his brother; thus Esau; thus the brethren of Joseph;
該隱如此成了殺弟兄的;以掃如此;約瑟的弟兄們也如此;
16:344
thus did countless evils come rioting in, when this was rent asunder.
For this very reason He too, with much exactness, takes away on every side the things that mar it.
And He does not stop merely at what has been said, but adds yet more things beyond what has been said, whereby He shows how great account He makes of it.
For having threatened by the council, and the judgment, and hell, He again brought in other things in accord with the former, speaking thus:
'If you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.'
16:349
Oh, the surpassing loving-kindness!
He makes light of the honour paid to Himself for the sake of love toward one's neighbour;
祂為了對鄰舍的愛,竟不顧那歸於祂自己的尊榮;
16:351
showing that not even the former things which He threatened were threatened out of any enmity, nor out of a desire for punishment, but out of much tender affection.
For what could be milder than these words? 'Let My service be interrupted,' He says, 'that your love may abide;'
since this too is a sacrifice—reconciliation with one's brother.
For this reason He did not say, 'After you have offered,' nor 'Before you offer;'
為此,祂沒有說『在你獻上之後』,也沒有說『在你獻上之前』;
16:355
but while the very gift lies there, and the sacrifice has already begun, He sends you off to be reconciled to your brother;
而是當那禮物正擺在那裡、祭祀已經開始的時候,祂就打發你去與你的弟兄和好;
16:356
and neither having taken up what is set before you, nor before you have set it forth, but while it lies in the midst, He bids you run thither.
For what reason does He bid this to be done thus, and why? These two things, as it seems to me, He hints at and establishes by these words:
one—as I said—wishing to show that He greatly values love, and accounts this to be the greatest sacrifice, and without it does not even accept the other;
其一,如我所說,祂想要顯明祂極其看重愛,並視這愛為最大的祭,若沒有這愛,祂連那另一種祭也不接納;
16:359
and another—laying upon you an inexorable necessity of reconciliation.
For he who has been commanded not to offer before he is reconciled will, even if not for the sake of love toward his neighbour, yet at least because his sacrifice may not lie unfinished, be urged to run to the one he has grieved and to dissolve the enmity.
For this reason He has spoken everything most emphatically, terrifying him and rousing him up.
For having said, 'Leave your gift,' He did not stop there, but added, 'before the altar' (again casting him into awe by the very place), and 'go your way;'
因為祂說了『留下你的禮物』之後,並沒有就此止住,而是加上『在壇前』(再次藉著這地方本身使他心生敬畏),又說『去吧』;
16:363
and He did not simply say, 'Go your way,' but added, 'First, and then come and offer your gift;'
祂也不是單單說『去吧』,而是加上『先去,然後再來獻你的禮物』;
16:364
showing by all these things that this table does not receive those who are at enmity with one another.
Let the initiated hear this—all who approach with enmity;
願受過洗禮的人聽這話——凡帶著仇恨前來的人;
16:366
let the uninitiated hear it also;
願尚未受洗的人也聽這話;
16:367
for the word has something in common with these too.
For they too bring a gift and a sacrifice—I mean prayer and almsgiving.
For that this too is a sacrifice, hear what the Prophet says:
'The sacrifice of praise shall glorify Me;'
and again, 'Offer unto God the sacrifice of praise;'
and, 'The lifting up of my hands is an evening sacrifice.'
So that even if you bring a prayer with such a disposition, it is better to leave the prayer and go to reconciliation with your brother, and then to offer the prayer.
For it was for this that all things came to pass;
因為一切事的發生都是為了這個緣故;
16:375
for this reason God also became man, and accomplished all those things, that He might gather us together.
Here, then, He sends the one who has done the wrong to the one who has been wronged;
在這裡,祂差遣那行了不義的人去到那受了虧負的人那裡;
16:377
but in the case of prayer He brings the one who has been wronged to the one who has done the wrong, and reconciles them.
'Forgive men their debts.'
'If he has anything against you, go your way to him.'
Rather, here too it seems to me that He is sending the one who has been wronged;
更確切地說,在這裡我也覺得祂是差遣那受了虧負的人;
16:381
wherefore He did not say, 'Reconcile yourself to your brother,' but 'Be reconciled;'
因此祂沒有說『你去使自己與你的弟兄和好』,而是說『你要與人和好』;
16:382
and while what is said seems to be on behalf of the one who has caused the grief, the whole of it is on behalf of the one who has been grieved.
'Be reconciled,' He says, 'through love toward that one, and you shall have Me also gracious, and with much confidence you shall be able to offer your sacrifice.'
'But if you are still inflamed, consider that I also gladly bid My own honour to be set at nought, that you may become friends;'
and let these things become to you a consolation for your anger.
And He did not say, 'When you have been wronged in great matters, then be reconciled;'
but, 'Even if he have any trifling thing against you.'
And He did not add, 'Whether justly or unjustly;'
祂也沒有加上『無論是公正還是不公正』;
16:389
but simply, 'If he have anything against you.'
For even if it be justly, not even so ought one to prolong the enmity;
因為即便是出於公正的緣由,就是如此也不當延續那仇恨;
16:391
since Christ also was justly angry with us, yet nonetheless gave Himself up on our behalf to slaughter, not reckoning those transgressions against us.
For this reason Paul too, urging us toward reconciliation in another manner, said:
Let not the sun go down upon your wrath.
For just as here Christ drives us toward this very same end by means of the sacrifice, so there Paul does it by means of the day.
For indeed he fears the night, lest it, taking the wounded man alone by himself, should make the sore greater.
For in the daytime there are many who distract and draw one away;
因為在白晝,有許多人使人分心、把人拉開;
16:397
but in the night, when a man is left alone and ponders things by himself, the waves swell up, and the tempest becomes greater.
Therefore, forestalling this, Paul wishes to hand the man over to the night already reconciled, so that the devil may henceforth have no occasion from the solitude to kindle the furnace of wrath and make it fiercer.
So too Christ does not permit even a little delay, lest, once the sacrifice has been completed, such a man should become more negligent, putting it off from day to day.
For He knows that the malady requires great swiftness;
因為祂知道這病症需要極大的迅捷;
16:401
and, like a wise physician, He applies not only the preventives against diseases, but also the corrective remedies.
For to forbid the calling of another a fool is preventive of enmity;
因為禁止人罵別人是「魔利」(愚拙的人),乃是對仇恨的預防;
16:403
but to command reconciliation is destructive of the diseases that arise after enmity.
And observe how each of these is laid down with vehemence.
For there He threatened hell, while here He does not receive the gift before the reconciliation, showing great wrath, and through all these things destroying both the root and the fruit.
And first He says, Be not angry;
祂首先說:不可動怒;
16:407
and after this, Do not revile.
For indeed both of these grow by means of each other;
因為這兩者實在是彼此助長的;
16:409
reviling comes from enmity, and enmity from reviling.
For this very reason He now heals the root, and now the fruit;
正因如此,祂時而醫治根,時而醫治果;
16:411
on the one hand preventing the evil from even springing up at the outset, but if after all it should sprout and bear its most wicked fruit, then burning it up more severely from every side.
For this reason, then, having spoken of judgment, and the council, and hell, and having discoursed concerning His own sacrifice, He adds yet other things again, speaking thus:
Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him.
What then, if I am wronged? What then, if I am plundered and dragged into court? This pretext and excuse too He took away;
那麼,我若受了冤屈怎麼辦?我若被搶奪、被拉上公堂怎麼辦?這藉口與託辭祂也除去了;
16:415
for He commands us not even so to be at enmity.
Then, since this injunction was a great one, He draws His counsel from present things, which are wont to restrain the grosser sort more than things to come.
Because he is more powerful, and does you wrong? Then he will wrong you all the more, if you do not settle, but are forced to come to court.
For in that case, having given up your money, you will keep your body free;
因為那時你雖捨了錢財,卻能使身體得自由;
16:419
but coming under the judge's sentence, you will both be bound and pay the uttermost penalty.
But if you avoid the contention there, you will reap two good things:
both suffering nothing unpleasant, and having the good deed henceforth be your own, and no longer of his compulsion.
But if you are unwilling to be persuaded by what is said, you wrong not him so much as yourself.
And see how here too He urges him on;
你且看祂在這裡也是如何催逼他的;
16:424
for having said, Agree with your adversary, He added, Quickly;
因為祂既說了「與你的對頭和息」,便加上「趕快」二字;
16:425
and He was not content with this, but sought yet another intensification of this swiftness, saying:
16:426
While you are on the way with him;
趁你同他還在路上的時候;
16:427
by these words thrusting him forward and pressing him hard with great vehemence.
For nothing so overturns our life as delaying and putting off in the working of good things.
This very thing, indeed, is what caused us to fall away from everything.
So, just as Paul also says:
Before the sun sets, dissolve the enmity;
趁日頭未落,先消解那仇恨;
16:432
and in what went before, He Himself says:
Before the offering is completed, be reconciled;
趁那供物尚未獻完,先去和好;
16:434
Quickly, while you are on the way with him;
趕快,趁你同他還在路上的時候;
16:435
before you come to the doors of the court, before you stand at the tribunal and henceforth come under the authority of the one who judges.
For before the entrance, you are master of everything;
因為在進去之前,你是一切事的主宰;
16:437
but if you set foot within those portals, then, not even with the utmost eagerness will you be able to arrange your own affairs as you wish, having come under another's constraint.
But what does it mean, to agree with him? Either He means this, that you should rather submit to being wronged;
然而「與他和息」是甚麼意思呢?祂或是指這個:你當寧可甘心忍受冤屈;
16:439
or, that you should so judge the case as if holding his very position;
或是指:你當如此審斷這案子,彷彿你站在他的地位上;
16:440
so that you may not corrupt justice by self-love, but, deliberating about another's matter as about your own, may render this verdict.
But if this is a great thing, do not marvel.
For it was on this account that He laid down all those beatitudes, that, having first smoothed and prepared beforehand the soul of the hearer, He might render it more fit for the reception of this whole legislation.
Now some say that by the appellation of the adversary He is hinting at the devil himself, and commanding us to have nothing of his;
如今有些人說,祂用「對頭」這稱呼是隱指魔鬼本身,並命令我們不可有屬他的任何東西;
16:444
for this, they say, is to agree with him;
他們說,這就是「與他和息」;
16:445
on the ground that it is not possible to be reconciled after our departure hence, since inexorable punishment henceforth awaits us.
But to me He seems to be speaking about the judges here below, and about the way to the court, and about this prison.
For since He turned them back from the loftier things and from those to come, He also frightens them by the things in the present life.
This is precisely what Paul too does, leading on the hearer both from things to come and from things present.
For instance, when, leading them away from wickedness, he shows the ruler armed against the evildoer, speaking thus:
But if you do evil, be afraid;
你若作惡,就當懼怕;
16:451
for he does not bear the sword in vain;
因為他佩劍不是空空的;
16:452
And again, commanding us to be subject to him, he sets forth not only the fear of God, but also that one's threat and his guardianship:
For it is necessary to be subject, not only because of wrath, but also because of conscience.
For the more irrational sort, as I said before, these things are more wont to set right—the things that are visible and close at hand.
Wherefore Christ also made mention not only of hell, but also of a court, and of being led away, and of a prison, and of all the misery there, through all these things destroying the roots of murder.
For he who neither reviles, nor goes to law, nor stretches out enmity, how shall he ever commit murder? So that from this too it is plain that our own advantage lies in our neighbor's advantage.
For he who agrees with his adversary will benefit himself far more, delivering himself from courts and prisons and the misery there.
Let us therefore be persuaded by what is said, and let us not resist, nor contend in return;
所以,我們當聽從所說的話,不可抗拒,也不可與人爭競;
16:459
for indeed, even before the prizes, these injunctions have in themselves their pleasure and their profit.
But if to the multitude they seem burdensome and to furnish much toil, consider that you are doing these things for Christ's sake, and the grievous thing will become sweet.
For if we have this reasoning always, we shall experience nothing burdensome, but shall reap much pleasure from every side.
For the toil will no longer appear to be toil; rather, the more it is intensified, the sweeter and more pleasant it becomes.
Whenever, then, habit persists in bewitching you toward evil, together with the desire for riches, wage against it that reasoning which declares that we shall receive a great reward, having despised the pleasure that is but for a season.
Are you quite despondent because I deprive you of pleasure? Nay, rejoice rather, because I procure for you heaven.
You act not for a man's sake, but for God's.
Endure, then, a little, and you shall see how great the gain is.
Persevere through the present life, and you shall receive unspeakable boldness.
For if we reason with the soul in this way, and consider not only the burdensome side of virtue but also reckon up the crown that comes from it, we shall quickly draw it away from all wickedness.
For if the devil, though he shows the pleasant thing to be but for a season and the painful thing to be perpetual, nevertheless prevails and gains the upper hand,
因為魔鬼雖將享樂顯為短暫、將痛苦顯為長久,尚且得勝並佔上風;
16:470
when in our case these things are reversed—the laborious being but for a season, and the pleasant and profitable being immortal—what excuse shall we have if we do not pursue virtue after so great an encouragement? For the mere ground of the toils suffices us in place of everything, together with the clear conviction that it is for God's sake that we endure all these things.
For if a man who has the emperor as his debtor thinks he possesses sufficient security for his whole life,
因為人若有君王作他的欠債者,便自以為畢生一切都有了足夠的倚靠;
16:472
consider how great he shall be who has made the God who loves mankind and lives forever his debtor for both small and great achievements.
Do not, then, set before me toils and sweat;
所以不要向我陳說勞苦與汗水;
16:474
for God has made virtue light not only by the hope of things to come, but also in another way, laying hold together with us on every side and helping us bear the load.
And if only you are willing to contribute a little eagerness, all the rest follows.
For it is on this account that He wills that you too should toil a little, so that the victory may also be yours.
And just as an emperor wills that his own son be present at the battle line and be seen there, so that the trophy may be reckoned to him, yet accomplishes the whole thing himself,
正如君王願自己的兒子臨陣列隊、被人看見,好叫那勝利的記念歸與他,然而全然成事的卻是君王自己;
16:478
so also does God in the war against the devil.
For He requires from you one thing only: that you display a genuine enmity toward him;
因為祂只向你要求一件事,就是你要向那惡者顯出真實的仇恨;
16:480
and if you render Him this, He Himself accomplishes the whole war.
Though anger blaze, though the desire for riches, though any other tyrannical passion, He comes swiftly if only He sees you stripping yourself for the contest against it and prepared; and He makes all things easy, and sets you above the flame, just as He did those children of old in the Babylonian furnace;
無論怒氣如何燃燒,無論錢財的貪慾,或任何別樣暴虐的情慾,只要祂看見你單單為與之較力而脫衣預備,祂便快快來到,使一切都成為容易的,並使你高過那火焰,正如祂從前待巴比倫火窯中那些少年人一樣;
16:482
for they too contributed nothing more than their resolve.
In order, then, that we also, having here quenched every furnace of disorderly pleasure, may escape the gehenna there, let us each day both deliberate and take thought and act upon these things, drawing to ourselves God's goodwill by our purpose set on what is good and by our constant prayers.
For thus even the things that now seem unbearable will be most easy and light and lovable.
For so long as we are in the passions, we deem virtue to be rough and difficult and uphill, but wickedness to be desirable and most pleasant;
因為當我們仍在情慾之中的時候,便以德行為崎嶇難行、又如上坡般艱難,卻以邪惡為可愛可喜的;
16:486
but if we withdraw a little from these things, then that too will appear loathsome and hideous, while this becomes easy and simple and desirable.
And this one may clearly learn from those who have attained.
Hear, at any rate, how Paul is ashamed even to speak of those former things, even after his deliverance from them, saying:
'What fruit had you then in the things of which you are now ashamed?' But this present virtue, even after the toil, he says is light, calling the painfulness of the affliction momentary and light, and rejoicing in his sufferings, and exulting in his afflictions, and glorying in the marks he bore for Christ's sake.
In order, then, that we too may be established in this habit, ordering ourselves each day by what has been said, and forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, let us press on toward the prize of the high calling;
所以,為叫我們也在這樣的習慣中站立得穩,天天照著所說的規正自己,忘記背後,努力面前,向著標竿直跑,要得那從上頭來高召的獎賞;
16:491
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the might unto the ages of ages.
