~40~ לך לך מארצך וממולדתך ומבית אביך אל הארץ אשר הראיתיך לתת אותה לך ולבניך, כי שם בארץ ההיא אברכך ושם אעשך לגוי גדול ואגדלה שמך ונברכו בך כל משפחות האדמה. עתה קום צא לך מן המקום הזה אתה ואשתך וכל אשר לך וגם כל ילידי ביתך וכל הנפש אשר עשית בחרן הוצא איתך מזה, וקום שוב ארצה כנען. ויקם אברם ויקח את שרי אשתו ואת כל אשר לו ואת כל ילידי ביתו ואת כל הנפש אשר עשו בחרן, ויצא ללכת ארצה כנען. וילך וישב אברם ארצה כנען כדבר ה׳, וילך איתו לוט בן הרן אחיו. ואברם בן חמש שנים ושבעים שנה בצאתו מחרן לשוב ארצה כנען. ויבואו ארצה כנען כדבר ה׳ אל אברם ויט אברם אהלו וישב באלוני מורה, ולוט בן אחיו וכל אשר לו עמו. וירא ה׳ אל אברם עוד ויאמר לזרעך אתן את הארץ הזאת, ויבן שם מזבח לה׳ הנראה אליו עודנו באלוני מורה עד היום. בימים ההם היה בארץ שנער איש חכם ומשכיל בכל חכמה ויפה תואר מאוד, אך היה איש עני ורש אין כל ושמו רקיון. וייצר לאיש מאוד על מחייתו ויועץ ללכת מצרימה אל אשוירוש בן ענם מלך מצרים להראות למלך את חכמתו אולי ימצא חן בעיניו לגדלו ולתת לו את מחייתו, ויעש רקיון כן. ויהי כבוא רקיון מצרימה וישאל את יושבי מצרים בעבור המלך, ויגידו לו יושבי מצרים את משפט מלך מצרים. כי משפט מצרים בימים ההם שלא יצא המלך מהיכלו מארמון המלך ולא יראה בארץ כי אם יום אחד בשנה, ואחרי כן יבוא עוד המלך אל היכלו לשבת שם. והיה ביום ההוא אשר יצא המלך ושפט את כל הארץ ביום ההוא וכל איש אשר לו דבר יבוא לפני המלך ביום ההוא, ועשה לו את כל אשר ישאל מאת המלך. ויהי כשמוע רקיון את משפט מצרים וכי לא יוכל לבוא לפני המלך, ויתעצב מאוד ויחר לו על ככה.

~41~ ויהי בערב וילך רקיון וימצא בית חרב מבתי האופים אשר למצרים, וילן שם במר נפש וברעב ותדד שנתו מעיניו. וידבר רקיון עם לבו מה יעשה בעיר עד ראות המלך, ואיכה יוכל לכלכל את נפשו בעיר. ויקם בבוקר ויתהלך בעיר ויקר מקרהו המוכרים הירק וישאל אליהם, ויגידו לו אשר הם מכלכלים את נפשם בירק ובזרעונים אשר יקנו וימכרו ליושבי הארץ. ויחפוץ רקיון לעשות כמעשיהם בעבור החיות את נפשו בעיר, אך לא ידע את משפט אנשי הארץ ויהי כסומא בתוכם. וילך ויקח ירק גם הוא למכור למחייתו, ויתקבצו עליו בני בליעל וילעגו בו ויחטפו ממנו את כל הירק לא השאירו לו דבר. ויקם משם במר נפש ואנחה, וילך אל בית האופים אשר לן בו וישכב שם בלילה השנית. ויתייעץ עוד בחכמתו בלילה ההוא איכה יוכל להימלט את נפשו, וימצא עלילה מה לעשות על ככה. וישכם בבוקר ויעש בחכמה וילך וישכור שלושים איש גיבורי חיל ובני בליעל וכלי מלחמתם בידם, ויוליכם אל מערות קבר מצרים ויושיבם שם. ויצום לאמור, כה אמר המלך התחזקו והיו לבני חיל ואל תעזבו כל איש מת להיקבר פה עד נותנם עליו מאתיים כסף ואחרי כן יקבר. ויעשו האנשים כדבר רקיון לכל אנשי מצרים כל השנה ההיא. ויהי לשמונה חודשים, ויאספו רקיון ואנשיו עושר רב וכסף וזהב ואבני שוהם ובדולח לאין מספר. ויקח רקיון סוסים ובהמות לרוב, וישכור עוד אנשים ויתן להם סוסים ויהיו עמו. ויהי לתקופת השנה לעת צאת המלך אל העיר, ויתקבצו כל יושבי מצרים ויועדו יחד אל יום צאת המלך לדבר אליו על מעשה רקיון ואנשיו. ויצא המלך ביום המועד ויבואו לפניו כל מצרים ויצעקו אליו לאמור, יחי המלך לעולם מה הדבר הזה אשר תעשה לעבדיך בעיר לבלתי תת איש מת להיקבר עד נתון עליו כסף וזהב. הנהיה כדבר הזה בכל הארץ גם בימי המלכים הראשונים אשר היו לפנינו הארץ מצרים מימי אדם עד היום הזה לבלתי קבור את המת כי אם במחיר, ידענו כי משפט המלך ליקח מס מן החיים שנה שנה, ואתה לא כן תעשה כי אם גם מאת המתים תיקח המס יום יום. ועתה המלך לא נוכל עוד לדבר הזה, כי נשחתה כל העיר בדבר הזה ואתה לא ידעת.

~42~ ויהי כשמוע המלך את כל דבריהם, ויקצוף מאוד ותבער בו חמתו כדבר הזה כי לא ידע דבר. ויאמר המלך מי הוא זה ואיזה הוא אשר מלאו לבו לעשות הדבר הרע הזה בארצי, אשר לא צויתיו הלא תגידו לי. ויגידו לו את כל מעשה רקיון ואנשיו, ויחר אף המלך וישלח להביא רקיון ואנשיו לפניו. ורקיון לקח כאלף ילדים בנים ובנות וילבישם שש ומשי ורקמה, וירכיבם על סוסים וישלחם למלך ביד אנשיו. ויקח גם הוא מנחה למלך כסף וזהב ואבני שוהם ובדולח לרוב וסוס עצום מאוד וטוב, ויבוא לפני המלך וישתחו למלך ארצה. ויתמה המלך ועבדיו וכל יושבי מצרים ממעשה רקיון ויראו את כל עושרו ואת מנחתו אשר הביא למלך, וייטב בעיני המלך מאוד ויפלא ממנו. וישב רקיון לפני המלך וישאלהו המלך על כל מעשיו, וידבר רקיון את כל דבריו בחכמה לפני המלך ואנשיו וכל יושבי מצרים. ויהי כשמוע המלך את דברי רקיון וחכמתו וישא רקיון חן וחסד לפניו, וגם כל עבדי המלך ויושבי מצרים נשא חן וחסד לפניהם על חכמתו ועל טוב דבריו. ויאהבוהו אהבה עזה מהיום ההוא והלאה. ויען המלך ויאמר לרקיון לא יקרא עוד שמך רקיון כי אם פרעה יהיה שמך, אחרי אשר פרעת מס מן המתים ויקראו את שמו פרעה. והמלך ועבדיו אהבו את רקיון על חכמתו, ויתיעצו עם כל יושבי מצרים להמליכו תחת יד המלך. ויעשו כן כל יושבי מצרים וחכמיה ותנתן דת במצרים, וימליכו עליהם את רקיון פרעה תחת יד אשוירוש מלך מצרים. וימלוך רקיון פרעה על מצרים כל השנה לשפוט את כל העיר יום יום, ואשוירוש המלך ישפוט את הארץ יום לשנה בעת אשר יצא להראות. ויקח רקיון פרעה את מלכות מצרים בחוזקה ובעורמה, ויפרע את כל יושבי מצרים על כן קראו שמו פרעה. ויאהבו מאוד כל יושבי מצרים את רקיון פרעה, ויכתבו מכתב וחוק לקרות לכל מלך אשר ימלוך עליהם ועל זרעם במצרים פרעה. על כן כל מלכי מצרים אשר ימלכו במצרים מהיום ההוא והלאה, יקראו שמם פרעה עד היום הזה. ויהי בשנה ההיא ויהי רעב כבד בכל ארץ כנען, ולא יכלו יושבי הארץ לשבת בה מפני הרעב כי כבד הוא מאוד.
