~96~ And Jacob sent messengers at that time to Esau his brother to the land of Seir to meet him and to speak to him, words of entreaty. And they commanded them to say, Thus shall you say to my lord, do thus said your servant Jacob, let not my lord think that the blessing of my father who blessed me has come upon me. Because I have been with Laban for twenty years, and I have been with you, and he has changed my salary ten times as much as was promised to my master. And I will make him work in his house very hard work, and God will see my poverty and my labor and will come as it is after that and will be merciful and pleasing in his eyes. And let me have an ox and a donkey, a sheep, and a manservant and a maidservant after that, God has mercy on me and the great lack. And now I have come to my country and to my place, to my father and my mother who are in the land of Canaan. And I sent to say all these to my lord, to please him. And so that my Lord will not think that I have acquired courage or that I have the blessing of my father who blessed me. And those angels went to Esau and found him at the end of the land of Edom walking toward Jacob, and with him four hundred men drawing swords from the sons of Seir Hori. And Jacob's angels said to do all the words of Jacob that he had spoken to them to Esau, and he replied that they did them with pride and contempt and said to them, "Didn't I hear and did not tell me what Jacob did to Laban who grew up in his house and gave him his daughters for wives and beget sons and daughters and break through with great strength and wealth in the house of Laban from him?" And he saw that he was very sick and that his wealth was great, and he fled and all that he had from the house of his son, and he treated his daughters as captives by the sword from the face of their father and did not tell him. Nor did Jacob do this to the white man because he did the same to me, and Jacob twice and Edom. And now I came today in my camps to meet him, and I did to him what was in my heart. And the angels returned and came to Jacob and told him to say, We came to your brother Esau and against him all your words and so and so we answered, and here he is coming to meet you with four hundred men. Now know and see what you will do, and pray before your God to save you from him. And it came to pass when Jacob heard the words of his brother that he had spoken to Jacob's angels, that Jacob was very afraid and he was afraid of him. And Jacob prayed to the Lord his God and said, "Please, Lord, the God of my father Abraham and Isaac. I said to me when I came out of my father's house, saying, I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. I will give you this land and your descendants after you. And I placed your seed as the stars of the sky, and you burst forth into the four winds of heaven, and the families of the earth were blessed in you and in your seed. And you will establish your words and give me wealth and sons and wealth. As much as my heart had you gave to your servant, and all that I asked of you you gave me, I did not lack anything. And after that you will say to me again to your ancestors and your homeland, and I will be very good to you again. And now I have come and you will save me from Leban, and I will fall into the hand of Esau my brother and he will kill me as a mother of sons. Now, O God, save me, please also immediately do my brother, because I am very selfish of him, and if there is no righteousness in me, do it for my father Abraham and Isaac. Because I knew that with your grace and mercy I bought this courage, and now please save me this day with your grace and my cloud.

~97~ And Jacob was able to pray to God, and divided the people who were with him and the sheep and the cattle into two camps. And he gave half in the hand of Damascus son of Eliezer, Abraham's servant with his sons, and he gave the other half in the hand of Elinos son of Eliezer his brother to the camp with his sons. And commanded them to say, keep your camps very far from each other and do not come very close to each other. And if Esau came to one camp and struck it, and there was the other camp far from it to escape from his hand. And Jacob stayed that night in that place, and ordered his servants all that night over the army and his sons. And God heard Jacob's prayer that day, and God saved Jacob at that time immediately his brother Esau. And God sent three angels from above, and they went before Esau and came to him. And these angels appeared before Esau and his men as thousands and hundreds of men riding on horses, and they girded weapons of war and divided into four camps for four heads in the eyes of Esau and in the eyes of all his men when it seemed to them. And the camp went to them one by one, and they found Esau and four hundred men who were going with him and came to meet Jacob his brother. And that camp ran towards Esau and his men and frightened them, and Esau fell from his horse in fright and all his men scattered over him in that place because they were very afraid. And the whole camp shouted at them in the womb over Esau. And all the men of war answered with a loud voice saying, Aren't we the servants of Jacob the servant of God and who can stand against us. And he said to them, "Ah, my lord Jacob, your lord, he is my brother, and I have not seen him for twenty years, and I will go to see him this day, and you shall all do to me according to this deed." And the angels answered him, saying, As the Lord lives, for if it were not for Jacob, of whom you said, my brother, we would not have left any of you or your people, but for Jacob's sake we will not do anything to you. And this camp will pass by Esau and his men, and will go to it. And Esau and his men went away from them like a horseshoe, and behold the second camp came to meet him with all swords and they also did to Esau and his men as the first camp did to them. And they left him to go, and behold, the third camp came towards him, and they frightened him, and Esau fell off the horse. And the whole camp shouted at him and said, "Are we not the servants of Jacob, the servant of God, and who can stand against us?" And Yeshua made them say, Ah, my lord Jacob, your lord my brother, he is my brother, and I have not seen his face for twenty years. And I will hear today that he is coming, and I will go to see him today and do to me according to this deed. And they answered him and said to him, As the Lord lives, for if it had not been for Jacob, whom you said is your brother, we would not have left a remnant of you and your people. However, because of Jacob, whom you said is your brother, we will not do anything to you or your people. And the third camp will also pass by them, and he and his men will continue on their way towards Jacob. And behold, the fourth camp came to meet him, and they would do the same to him and his men as they did to him the first. And he saw all the evil that those four angels had done to him and his people, and he was very afraid of Jacob his brother and went to meet him in peace. And they made Jacob hate him, because he was very afraid of his soul because of his brother Jacob. Because he thought that the four camps that he struck were Jacob's servants. And Jacob slept that night with his servants in his camps, and he consulted with his servants to give his brother Esau an offering from all that came in his hand and from all that he could afford, and he did so.

~98~ And Jacob got up in the morning, he and his men, and chose from all the offerings a gift for Esau. And these are the number of all the offerings that Jacob chose from his place to give to his brother Esau. And he chose from all the flock, four hundred and forty sheep. And he chose from the camels and donkeys, thirty-three. And of the cattle choose, fifty cattle. And he put everything into ten herds and gave each kind to its kind, and ten of his servants gave each herd by hand. And he fasted and said to them, keep your distance from one another and put a distance between herd and herd. And it came to pass that Esau met you and agreed with him and they asked you to say to whom you are going and to whom are all those who are before you, and you said to them we are Jacob's servants and we will go to meet Esau his brother in peace and behold Jacob is coming after us. And what is before us is a reference from Jacob, to his brother Esau. And it happened that they would say to you, why will he delay after you to go towards his brother to see his face, and you said to them, but here he is coming after us to meet his brother with joy, because he said, I will atone for his face with the offering that goes to him, and after that I will see his face, maybe he will lift my face. And all this offering shall pass through the hands of his servants and shall go before him that day, and he shall lie down that night with his camps by the bank of the river Yabok. And he got up in the middle of the night and took his wives and his maidservants and all that he had, and that night he took them across the Yabok Pass. And it came to pass when he had moved all that he had to the stream, and he was alone, and a man met him, and the man wrestled with him in the night until the dawn, and stuck the palm of Jacob's thigh in his wrestling with him. And it came to pass at dawn, and the man left Jacob there, and blessed him, and went his way. And Jacob crossed the stream at dawn, and he was limping on his thigh. And the sun shone for him when he finished crossing the stream, and he came to the place where he and his sons lived. And they walked until midnight, and they were walking and the offering passed before them. And Jacob lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, Esau was coming from afar and with him many people, four hundred men, and Jacob was very afraid of his brothers. And Jacob hastened and killed his sons on his wives and handmaids, and he put Dina his daughter in one ark and gave it to his servants. And he passed before his sons and his wives to meet his brother, and they bowed to the ground going back and forth and bowed seven times until he reached his brother. And G-d gave Jacob grace and mercy in the eyes of Esau and his men, because G-d listened to Jacob's prayer.

~99~ And Jacob's fear and his fear will fall on his brother Esau, because Esau was very afraid of Jacob because of what God's angels did to Esau, and Esau's anger will turn to mercy on Jacob. And Esau saw Jacob running towards him, and he also ran towards him and hugged him and fell on his neck and watered him and wept. And also all the people who came with Esau, God gave fear and mercy in their hearts to Jacob and they kissed Jacob and embraced him. And Eliphaz the son of Esau and his four brothers the sons of Esau wept with Jacob and watered him and embraced him, because the fear of Jacob fell upon them all. And he lifted up his eyes and saw the women and the children, the sons of Jacob, following Jacob, and bowing on the way to Esau. And Esau said to Jacob, who are these to you, my brother, are they your sons or your servants. And Jacob answered Esau and said, "They are my sons, for whom God has favored your servant." And it came to pass as Jacob said to his brother Esau, and Jacob's camp arrived before Esau and his men, and Esau saw the whole camp and said to Jacob, "Where did you get this whole camp that I met last night?" And Jacob answered Esau and said, To find favor in your eyes, my lord, is what God favored your servant. And the offering came before Esau, and Jacob begged Esau, saying, "Please take my offering that was brought to my Lord from me." And Esau said why is this my brother, may it be to you that which you have. And Jacob said to me, I will give you all these, after I have seen your face, because you are still alive in peace. And Esau agreed to take the offering, and Jacob said to him, My Lord, if I please please you and take my offering from my hand, for therefore I have seen your face as I see the face of G-d, and you have pleased me. And Esau took that offering, and also silver and gold and crystal Jacob gave to Esau and he begged for it and he took it. And Esau divided all the provision that was in the offering and gave half to the people who came with him because they came with a reward, and he gave half to his sons. And the silver and the gold and the crystal, he gave in the hand of Eliphaz his firstborn son. And Esau said to Jacob, We will stand with you and we will walk slowly with you until my people come to my place, that we may live there together. And Jacob answered his brother and said, I will do so when my Lord speaks to me. Even my Lord knows that my children are tender, and the sheep and the cattle and their laborers who are with me will slowly go. And it happened that they would run away and die all of them, because you knew their burden and their pain. Therefore, let my Lord pass before His servant, and I will walk slowly for the sake of the children and the sheep, until I come to my Lord in his place. And Esau said to Jacob, I have appointed your people from the people who are with me to help you on the way and to bear your burden and your burden. And he said, "Why is this, my Lord? I will find favor in your eyes. Behold, I am coming to you in the city to sit together there when you spoke, and you go away with your men, for I am coming after you." And Jacob said this to Esau, so that he would distance Esau and all his people from him, and then Jacob would go to his father's house in the land of Canaan. And Esau heard Jacob's voice, and Esau sat down with four hundred men who were with him on their way to Seir. And Jacob and all that he had went that day to the edge of the land of Canaan at its border, and stayed there for days.

~100~ And it came to pass in days that Jacob traveled from the border of the land and came to the land of Shelem, which is the city of Nablus in the land of Canaan, and he graced the face of the city. And bought the plot of the field there from the sons of Hamor, the people of the land, for five shekels. And Jacob built him a house there, and where his tabernacle was, and for his dwelling he made Sukkot, therefore the name of that place was called Sukkot. And Jacob sat in Sukkot for days, one year and six months. At that time the women of the inhabitants of the land of the city of Nablus went out to the sands and to rejoice, with the joy of the daughters of the people of the city. And when they went out, Rachel and Leah, Jacob's wives, went out with their maids, to see the joy of the daughters of the people of the city. And Dinah the daughter of Jacob also went out with them and they saw the daughters of the city, and they sat there before the daughters of the city. And they came and told this to Jacob, and Jacob heard that Nablus had defiled his daughter Dinah, and Jacob sent two of his servants to bring Dinah from the house of Nablus. And they went and came to the house of Shechem to take Dina from there, and it happened when they came and Shechem came out to them with his men, and they went out of his house, and they did not allow them to come before Dina, but Shechem sat Dina down and kissed and embraced her in front of them. And Jacob's servants came and told him to say when we came and he and his men drove us out, and thus and thus did Nablus to judgment before our eyes. And Jacob also knew that Nablus had defiled his daughter, but he did not speak of her, and his sons were tending his home in the field, and Jacob was deaf until they came.

~101~ And before his sons came, Jacob sent two young women from the daughters of his servants to keep Dinah in the house of Nablus and to sit with her. And Nablus sent three men from his flock to Hamour son of Hadkam son of Fred his father to say, take this girl to me as a wife. And Hamor son of Hadkam, the son of Nablus, came and sat before him. And Hamor said to Shechem his son, Is there not among the daughters of your people a wife who will take a Hebrew woman who is not of your people? And Nablus said to him, take her for me because she is right in my eyes. And Hamor did as his son said, because he was very honorable in his eyes. And Hamor went out to Jacob to talk to him about this matter. And it came to pass when Hamor left the house of Nablus his son before he came to Jacob to speak with him, and behold, the sons of Jacob came from the field when they heard this thing that Nablus the son of Hamur had done. And the people consulted very much about this matter and they felt very sorry for their sister, and they all came to the Behari even before the time of the assembly of the grant. And Hamor was able to speak to Jacob and his sons, and behold, Nablus his son came after him and sat before them. And Nablus spoke before Jacob and his sons, saying, I will find favor in your eyes in what you give me your daughter and what you say to me I will do to her. Give me a lot of money and give and give me, and what you say to me I will do, and whoever turns their mouths away will die and give me the girl for a wife.

~102~ And Shimon and Levi answered Hamour and Shechem his son deceitfully saying, All that you have spoken to us we will do to you and here are our sisters in your house. And it came to pass when Nablus and his father heard the words of Shimon and Levi to them, and it was good in their eyes, and Nablus and his father left and went to their home. And it came to pass as they went, that the sons of Jacob spoke to their father, saying, Behold, I know that there is a sentence of death for these wicked men and their city, because they transgressed what our God commanded Noah and his sons and sowed after him. And also what this thing did to Dinah our sister who defiled her, because this filth will not do in our midst forever. Now know and see what you will do, and ask for advice and a plot what to do for them to kill all the inhabitants of this city. And Shimon said to them, Here is a sound advice for you that you will tell them, to give them every memory when we fall. And the sons of Jacob spoke to them deceitfully, as the Gad said, We have told all your words to our father Isaac, and your words will be good in his eyes. But he spoke to us saying that Abraham his father commanded him from our God, the Lord of all the earth, that any man who is not of his sons who wishes to take one of his daughters, let him have no memory when we are dead and then we will give him our daughter to wife. Now we have informed you of all our ways that our father spoke to us, because we cannot do this thing that you spoke to us of giving our daughter to a man who has a virgin because it is a disgrace to us. Hereby it behooves you to give us our daughter and take your daughters to us, and we will sit with you and be one people when you spoke. If you listen and desire us to be like us, to give you every memory when we fall. And if you don't listen to us to shout like we did when we commanded, and we came to you and took our daughter from you and left.

~103~ And Nablus and Hamor his father heard to do the words of the sons of Jacob, because Nablus was very interested in religion and his soul clung to it. And Nablus and Hamor his father hastened and went to the gate of their city, and gathered all the people of their city and spoke to them the words of the sons of Jacob as follows. We came to those people, the sons of Jacob, and we spoke to them all about their daughter, and those people told us to do all our words, and they too, here is our land before them, and they settled in it and traded it, and we became one people with them, we will take their daughters to us and give them our daughters as wives. But in this way those people will instruct us in this matter, to give us every memory when they fall as commanded by their God. And it was in our doings that all their words were passed on to us, and they dwelt with us, and all their goods and possessions were ours, and we were one nation with them. And it came to pass when all the people of the city heard all the words of Nablus and his father's donkey, and all the people of their city warned them about this matter. And they listened to them to shout, because his father's Nablus and Hamor were very honorable in their eyes because they were the presidents of the land. And it came to pass on the next day, that in the morning Nablus and his father's donkey went to sleep, and they gathered all the people of their city into the city, and they called the sons of Jacob, and they killed every memory of them that day and the next day. And Nablus and Hamor his father Melo and the five brothers of Nablus, and they got up and went and sat each in his house. And they were very angry at this because the people of the city did not listen to them, and it happened on the second day in the evening and they found eight little children who did not tell them because the hiding they died from Hamor and Nablus son and from the people of the city. And they sent Nablus and his father Hamer to them to bring them before them and in front of them, and Hadkam and his six brothers jumped on them with their swords and sought to kill them. And they sought to kill Nablus and Hamor his father, and they sought to kill Dina with them for this matter.

~104~ And they said to them, what is this deed that you have done, is there not a wife among the daughters of all your Canaanite brothers, because you have taken for yourselves the daughters of the Hebrews, which you did not know the day before yesterday. And you shall do all this deed, which your fathers have not commanded you forever. Consider that you will be successful in this deed that you have done, and what will you answer and answer in this matter to your Canaanite brothers because they will come tomorrow and ask you about this matter. And it would happen if your deeds were not corrected and not made good in their eyes, and what will you do to your souls and to our souls that you did not hear our voice. And that all the inhabitants of the land and all your brothers, the sons of Ham, will hear your deeds, saying, for the sake of a Hebrew woman, Nablus and Hamor, his father, and all the inhabitants of their city, did what they did not know, nor did their ancestors for ever. Let us flee and let us carry our shame forever, before the inhabitants of the land of Canaan, your brothers. And now we will not be able to stand this thing that you have done, and we will not be able to endure and bear this burden upon us that our ancestors did not command us. Here we are tomorrow and we went and gathered all our Canaanite brothers who are living in all the land, and we came all together and we will cripple you and all that you trust in and we will not leave a remnant for them and you. And we will listen to their voice and do this act that you saw, until we find what we want from them. And now please wait and linger until our flesh is healed and we are strengthened and we walk on them together, and we do to them what was with our hearts and your hearts.

~105~ And Dinah the daughter of Jacob heard all these things which Hadkam and his brothers spoke, and which Hamor and Nablus his son and the men of their city answered them. And she hastened and sent one of her girls, whom her father had sent to guard her in Beit Nablus, to Yaakov her father and to her brother as said. And the slave girl went and recounted all their words to Jacob and his sons, saying, Such and such Hadkam and his brothers counseled about you, and such and such they returned to Hamor and Nablus and the people of their city. And it came to pass when Jacob and his sons heard these things, and they filled them with heat and foam, and their noses were very angry with them. And Shimon and Levi swore and said, As the Lord God of all the earth lives, for now tomorrow there will not be left in any city a remnant and a refugee. And twenty young men hid themselves, and those young men fought with Shimon and Levi, and Shimon and Levi killed many of them. And for years they ran away from them and escaped, and went and came to the clay wells in the city. And Hamor and Nablus his son they killed with the sword, and they took Dinah out of the house of Nablus and went out from there. And the sons of Jacob went, and returned, and came upon the hollows, and destroyed all their host that was in the city and that was in the field. And it happened that they plundered all the booty and about three hundred women stood over them and threw dirt on them and they stopped with stones, and Simon attacked them and killed them all with the sword. And Shimon sat before Levi, and they despoiled the city, and also despoiled the flock and the cattle, and all the cattle they plundered, and the other women and the children. And all these drove and opened the gate of the city, and they went out and came to Jacob their father with valor.

~106~ And it came to pass when their father Jacob saw all that they had done to the city and he saw the plunder that they had taken from there, and Jacob whipped them very hard. And Jacob said to them, What is this deed that you have done to me, that I have found rest with the inhabitants of the land of Canaan, and no one speaks to me of them. And now you have done this thing to make me afraid of the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, and I will tell you when, and they all gathered to me, and the people, because they would hear your deeds to their brothers, and I and all my household were destroyed. And Shimon and Levi and all their brothers with them answered Jacob their father and said to him, here we live in the land and Nablus will do all this for our sisters. And it came to pass when Shimon and Levi went out of the city, and the two young men who remained, who hid in the pits of the city, stood up because they did not die with the people of the city. And those young men went up to the city and walked through it and found the city in ruins and there was no one but the weeping women, and those young men cried out and said, "Behold, this is the evil that the sons of Jacob the Hebrew have done to this city, which they have destroyed today from the cities of the Canaanites, and they will not see for themselves any of the inhabitants of the land of Canaan." And those men went out of the city and went to the city of Toph, and they came there and told the inhabitants of Toph all the stories and what the sons of Jacob had done to the city of Nablus. And the word reached the town of King Tophuh, and he sent people to the city of Nablus to see the truth of those young men's words. Because the king did not believe them about this matter, namely, how two people will destroy a great city in Nablus. And the angels of Israel came and said to him, saying, We have come to the city of Haraba. There is no one but women weeping. There is also no sheep and food there, because all that was in the city was plundered by the sons of Jacob. Vitma will return to this matter to say, how can two people do this thing to destroy a great city and none of them will be able to stand up against them. And Judah lifted up a great stone from the ground, and its weight was about sixty shekels, and Judah ran toward Jashub and struck him with that stone upon his shield, and Jashub was confounded by the blow and fell from the horse to the ground. And the shield was torn from the hand of Jashub, and from the force of that blow he was thrown about fifteen cubits, and the shield fell before the second camp. And the kings who had come with Jashub saw from afar the might of Judah the son of Jacob and what he had done to Jashub, and they were greatly terrified before Judah. And all the camp of Jashub fled before Judah, and no man stood against him, and they forsook Jashub and fled from him while Jashub was still fallen on the ground. And Jashub saw that all the men of his camp had fled from him, and he hurried and rose up in haste toward Judah, and stood upon his feet facing Judah. And the inhabitants of the city insulted the sons of Jacob on top of the wall and cursed them, and the sons of Jacob heard the insult and their noses became very angry and their anger burned in them.
