從來沒有人見過神;
No one has ever seen God;
15:2
the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
15:3
As for the names and the words that lie in the Scriptures, God wills that we should attend to them not carelessly, but with much understanding.
15:4
For this reason the blessed David inscribed over many of his own Psalms the words, 'For understanding,' and said:
15:5
'Open my eyes, that I may perceive the wondrous things out of Your law.'
15:6
在他之後,他的兒子也教導人,指出當像尋找銀子一樣尋求智慧;
And after him his son too, giving counsel, shows that one must seek out wisdom as though it were silver;
15:7
or rather, must trade for it above gold.
15:8
And the Lord too, exhorting the Jews to search the Scriptures, urges us all the more to inquiry.
15:9
For He would not have spoken thus, if it were possible to grasp them at once and from the very first reading.
15:10
For that which lies out in the open and ready to hand, no one would ever search out, but rather that which is overshadowed and found only with much inquiry.
15:11
For this reason He also calls them a hidden treasure, rousing us to the search.
15:12
These things have been said by us, that we may not approach the words of the Scriptures carelessly nor at random, but with great exactness.
15:13
For if one were to listen without examination to the things spoken in them, and receive everything just so,
15:14
according to the letter as it is stated, he will suppose many absurd things concerning God.
15:15
For indeed he will admit doctrines about Him such as that He is a man, and composed of bronze, and irascible, and full of wrath, and many things yet worse than these.
15:16
But if he learns the meaning that lies in the depth, he will be delivered from all this absurdity.
15:17
Since indeed the very passage now set before us says that God has a bosom, which is proper to bodies.
15:18
But no one is so mad as to suppose that the Bodiless One is a body.
15:19
In order, then, that we may take the whole in a way worthy of the spiritual conception, come, let us examine the passage from the beginning.
15:20
No one has ever seen God.
15:21
By what sequence of thought did the Evangelist come to this? Having shown the great surpassing excellence of the gifts of Christ, so that the difference between these and the things administered through Moses is infinite, he now wishes also to state a reasonable cause for the difference.
15:22
因為那一位既是僕人,便成了較卑微之事的執事;
For the one, being a servant, became a minister of lowlier matters;
15:23
but this One, being Master and King and Son of the King, brought us things far greater, being ever with the Father and beholding Him continually.
15:24
Therefore he added, saying:
15:25
No one has ever seen God.
15:26
What then shall we say to the most loud-voiced Isaiah, who says:
15:27
「我看見主坐在高高的寶座上」?我們又要怎麼對約翰說呢?他為以賽亞作見證,說以賽亞看見主的榮耀時說了這話。我們又要怎麼對以西結說呢?因為他也看見神坐在基路伯之上;
'I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up'? And what to John, who bears witness of him that he said these things when he saw His glory? And what to Ezekiel? For he too sees Him seated upon the Cherubim;
15:28
and what to Daniel? For he too says:
15:29
「亙古常在者坐著」;
'The Ancient of Days was seated';
15:30
and what to Moses himself, saying:
15:31
「求你顯出你的榮耀,使我認識地見你」?雅各也是由此得了他的名,被稱為以色列;
'Show me Your glory, that I may see You knowingly'? And Jacob too received his name from this, being called Israel;
15:32
for Israel means 'he who sees God.'
15:33
And others too have seen Him.
15:34
How then did John say, No one has ever seen God? He was making clear that all those were matters of condescension, not a vision of the bare essence itself.
15:35
For if they had seen the very nature, they would not have beheld it in different ways.
15:36
For it is simple and without shape, uncompounded and uncircumscribed; it neither sits, nor stands, nor walks.
15:37
And how it exists, He alone knows.
15:38
And this God the Father made plain through a certain prophet, saying:
15:39
祂說:「我加增了異象,並在眾先知手中用比喻曉諭人」;
'I,' He says, 'have multiplied visions, and in the hands of the prophets I was made like';
15:40
that is, 'I condescended; I appeared not as that which I was.'
15:41
For since His Son was to appear to us through true flesh, He was from of old training them beforehand to behold the essence of God, as far as it was possible for them to see.
15:42
因為神本體究竟是甚麼,不但眾先知沒有見過,就連天使、天使長也沒有見過;
Since that very thing which God is, not only prophets, but not even angels have seen, nor archangels;
15:43
but if you ask them, you will hear them answering nothing concerning the essence, but only singing, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men.'
15:44
And if you should desire to learn something from the Cherubim or the Seraphim, you will hear the mystic hymn of sanctification, and that 'The heaven and the earth are full of His glory.'
15:45
你若察考那更高的諸權能,就必發現他們別無他事,惟有一件工作,就是讚美神;
If you examine the higher powers, you will find nothing else but that they have one work: to praise God;
15:46
for 'Praise Him,' it says, 'all His powers.'
15:47
Therefore the Son alone sees Him, and the Holy Spirit.
15:48
因為那受造的萬有,怎能得見那非受造的呢?因為,我們對於任何一種無形體的權能——縱然它是受造的——尚且不能得著清晰的觀看,這在天使的事上已屢次顯明;
For how shall the whole created nature be able even to see the Uncreated? For if we cannot receive a clear vision even of any bodiless power whatsoever, though it be created, and this has often been shown in the case of the angels;
15:49
how much less of the essence that is both bodiless and uncreated.
15:50
For this reason Paul too says, 'Whom no one of men has seen nor can see.'
15:51
Does this prerogative, then, belong to the Father alone, and no longer to the Son? Away with the thought!
15:52
That it belongs to Him too, hear Paul making this plain, and saying:
15:53
'Who is the image of the invisible God.'
15:54
那不能看見之神的像,祂自己也是不能看見的;
And He who is the image of the Invisible is Himself also invisible;
15:55
他若在別處說:「神在肉身顯現」,你不要以為希奇;
and if elsewhere he says, 'God was manifested in the flesh,' do not marvel;
15:56
for the manifestation came about through the flesh, and not indeed according to the essence.
15:57
For that He too is invisible, not only to men but also to the powers above, Paul shows.
15:58
For having said that 'He was manifested in the flesh,' he added that
15:59
如此,祂是在披上肉身之時,才向天使顯現的;
So that He was then seen even by the angels, when He was clothed with flesh;
15:60
but before this they did not see Him thus, since to them also the essence was invisible.
15:61
有人問:那麼基督怎麼說:「你們要小心,不可輕看這小子裡的一個;
And how, one says, did Christ say, 'Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones;
15:62
for I say to you, that their angels do always behold the face of My Father who is in heaven'? What then? Does God have a face, and is He circumscribed in the heavens? But no one would be so mad as to say this.
15:63
What then is the meaning of what is said? Just as when He says:
15:64
「清心的人有福了,因為他們必得見神」;
'Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God';
15:65
He speaks of that vision which is according to the understanding, the one possible for us, and of the conception we have concerning God.
15:66
So too may it be said of the angels, that by reason of their pure and sleepless nature they imagine nothing else, but ever behold God alone.
15:67
For this cause He Himself again says, 'No one knoweth the Father, save the Son.'
15:68
What then? Are we all in ignorance? God forbid.
15:69
Rather, none knoweth Him in such manner as the Son.
15:70
所以,正如許多人照著所容許他們的觀看見了祂,卻沒有人看見祂的本質;
As therefore many saw Him according to the vision permitted them, yet no one beheld His essence,
15:71
so also now we all know God, yet no one knoweth what His essence is in itself, save only He who was begotten of Him.
15:72
For here by 'knowledge' He means exact contemplation and comprehension, and that as great as the Father has concerning the Son.
15:73
For 'even as the Father knoweth Me, I also know the Father.'
15:74
Wherefore observe also with how great fullness the Evangelist utters his words.
15:75
For having said that 'No one hath seen God at any time,' he said not, 'The Son, having seen Him, hath declared Him,' but set down something greater than seeing, saying, 'He that is in the bosom of the Father.'
15:76
For to dwell in the bosom is far more than to see.
15:77
因為單單觀看的人,未必對所顯現的有精確的認識;
For he who merely sees hath not by any means an exact knowledge of that which appears;
15:78
but he who dwells in the bosom can never be ignorant of anything.
15:79
所以,當你聽見「除了子,沒有人認識父」的時候,免得你說:祂雖然比眾人更多認識父,卻不能照祂本體的浩大來認識祂;
Therefore, when thou hearest that 'No one knoweth the Father, save the Son,' lest thou shouldest say that, although He knoweth the Father more than all, yet He knoweth Him not as great as He is,
15:80
for this cause both the Evangelist says that He dwells in the bosom of the Father, and Christ Himself says that He knoweth Him as much as the Father knoweth the Son.
15:81
Ask therefore the gainsayer:
15:82
'Tell me,' say, 'doth the Father know the Son?' And he will surely say, unless he be mad, that He doth.
15:83
After this let us ask him yet this also:
15:84
'And what then—doth He behold Him with an exact vision and knowledge, and know clearly that very thing which He is?' And most certainly he will say this too.
15:85
From this, then, gather henceforth the Son's exact comprehension concerning the Father.
15:86
For He Himself said, 'As the Father knoweth Me, so know I also Him;'
15:87
and in another place, 'Not that any one hath seen God, save He which is from God.'
15:88
For this cause, as I said, the Evangelist also makes mention of the bosom, showing us all things by this one word: that great is the kinship and the unity of essence, that the knowledge is undeviating, that the authority is equal.
15:89
因為父決不會將一位本質不同的抱在祂的懷裏;
For the Father would not have held in His bosom one of a different essence;
15:90
那一位若是奴僕、是眾人中的一個,也決不敢在主人的懷中往來;
nor again would He Himself, being a servant and one of the many, have dared to move within the bosom of the Master;
15:91
for this belongs only to a genuine Son, and to one using great boldness toward Him that begat Him, and having nothing less.
15:92
Wouldst thou also learn His eternity? Hear what Moses says concerning the Father.
15:93
For having asked, in case he should be asked by the Egyptians who it was that had sent him, what then he should answer them, he is commanded to say, 'He that IS hath sent me.'
15:94
And the phrase 'He that IS' is significative of always being, and of being without beginning, and of being truly and properly.
15:95
This also the words 'In the beginning was' declare, being expressive of ever being.
15:96
This expression, then, John here uses, showing that without beginning and eternally the Son is in the bosom of the Father.
15:97
In order, therefore, that thou mightest not, on account of the community of the name, suppose Him to be one of those who have become sons by grace, first the article is added, distinguishing Him from those that are by grace.
15:98
But if this suffice thee not, but thou still stoopest downward, hear a name more authoritative than this—'Only-begotten.'
15:99
And if even after this thou lookest downward again, I will not decline in some sort to utter even a human expression concerning God, namely,
15:100
the expression of the 'bosom,' I mean—only that thou mayest suspect nothing lowly.
15:101
你看見主人的仁愛與眷顧了麼?神將不配於祂自己的言語加在祂身上,為要使你即或這樣也能看得透,並且領會一件偉大而崇高的事;
Seest thou the loving-kindness and tender care of the Master? God clothes Himself with words unworthy of Himself, that even so thou mayest see clearly, and conceive something great and lofty;
15:102
and dost thou still remain below? For tell me:
15:103
for what reason is the 'bosom' here taken up, this gross and fleshly name? Was it that we should suspect God to be a body? Away with it! By no means, saith he.
15:104
For what reason, then, is it said? For if neither the genuineness of the Son is established by it, nor the fact that God is not a body, the expression has been cast in superfluously, fulfilling no need.
15:105
For what reason, then, is it said? For I will not desist from inquiring this of thee.
15:106
Is it not plain that it is for no other cause than that we should apprehend by it nothing else but the genuineness of the Only-begotten, and His being co-eternal with the Father? 'He declared Him,' saith the Evangelist.
15:107
What did He declare? That 'No one hath seen God at any time.'
15:108
But this both the rest of the prophets, and Moses, cry aloud again and again:
15:109
'The Lord thy God is one Lord;'
15:110
'Before Me there was no other God, and after Me there is none.'
15:111
那麼,我們從子——就是那在父懷裏的——多學到了甚麼呢?從那獨生者又多學到了甚麼呢?首先,就連這些事本身也是出於祂的作為;
What then have we learned more from the Son, as being in the Father's bosom? What from the Only-begotten? That first of all these very things also are of His working;
15:112
then, that we received a far clearer teaching, and learned that 'God is a Spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth;'
15:113
並且還有這一件事,就是人看不見神,也沒有人認識祂,唯有子認識祂;
and further this very thing, that it is impossible to see God, and that no one knoweth Him save the Son;
15:114
又曉得祂是一位真正獨生者的父;
and that He is the Father of a genuine Only-begotten;
15:115
and the other things, as many as were discoursed concerning Him.
15:116
But the word 'He declared' points to the clearer and plainer teaching, which He gave not to the Jews only, but to the whole world, and brought it to good effect.
15:117
因為對於眾先知,連猶太人也不是都留心聽從;
For to the prophets not even all the Jews gave heed;
15:118
but to the Only-begotten of God the whole world both yielded and was persuaded.
15:119
所以,此處的「表明」乃是指教訓的更加明白;
The 'declaration,' therefore, here signifies the greater plainness of the teaching;
15:120
wherefore also He is called both 'Word,' and 'Angel of great counsel.'
15:121
Since, therefore, we have been deemed worthy of a greater and more perfect teaching, God no longer speaking to us through prophets, but through His Son in these last days, let us show forth a manner of life much greater and worthy of the honor.
15:122
因為這實在是不合宜的:祂竟這樣降卑,以致不再願意藉著僕人與我們談話,乃親自來說;
For indeed it were absurd that He should have come down so far as to be no longer willing to converse with us through servants, but through Himself;
15:123
while we show forth nothing more than they of former times.
15:124
They, then, had Moses; but we have the Master of Moses for our teacher.
15:125
Let us therefore show forth a wisdom worthy of this honor, and let us have nothing in common with the earth.
15:126
For it was for this cause that He brought us teaching from above, out of the heavens, that He might remove our mind thither, that we might become imitators of the Teacher according to our power.
15:127
'And how,' saith one, 'is it possible to become imitators of Christ, transacting all things for the common good, and not seeking our own?'
15:128
For Christ also, he saith, pleased not Himself, but as it is written:
15:129
'The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell upon Me.'
15:130
Let no one, therefore, seek his own.
15:131
因為人若顧念鄰舍的益處,就是這樣尋求自己的益處;
For thus doth a man seek his own, if he look to that of his neighbor;
15:132
for indeed their things are ours.
15:133
We are one body, and members and parts one of another.
15:134
Let us not therefore be disposed as though torn asunder, nor let anyone say:
15:135
'Such a one is no friend of mine,' you say, 'nor a kinsman, nor a neighbor, nor have I anything in common with him.'
15:136
那麼我怎能親近他呢?怎能與他交談呢?其實,即使他既非親屬也非朋友,他到底是個人,與你共有同一的本性,有同一位主,是你的同僕、同住之人;
How then shall I approach him? How shall I converse with him? But even if he is neither kinsman nor friend, still he is a man, sharing the same nature with you, having the same Master, a fellow-servant and a fellow-tenant with you;
15:137
for he has come into being in the same world.
15:138
And if he also shares in the same faith, behold, he has even become a member of your body.
15:139
For what friendship could ever effect so great a union as the kinship of the faith produces? For it is not merely such closeness as friends ought to show toward friends that we must have toward one another, but as great as member has toward member.
15:140
but as great a nearness as member has toward member.
15:141
For a closer intimacy than this manner of friendship and fellowship one could never find at all.
15:142
As therefore you could not say:
15:143
'What kinship or nearness have I toward him?'—for that would be ridiculous—
15:144
so neither will you be able to say this concerning your brother.
15:145
'For we were all baptized into one body,' he says.
15:146
Why into one body? So that we should not be torn asunder, but by our meeting together and our love for one another should preserve the coherence of a single body.
15:147
Let us then not despise one another, lest we come to overlook our own selves.
15:148
'For no one ever hated his own flesh,' he says, 'but nourishes and cherishes it.'
15:149
For this reason God gave us this world as one single house; He distributed all things equally, He kindled one sun for all, He stretched out one roof, the heaven, He spread out one table, the earth.
15:150
祂還賜下另一張遠比這更大的桌子,然而這桌子也是同一張;
He also gave another table far greater than this one, yet this too is one;
15:151
those initiated together know what is meant.
15:152
祂賜給眾人同一種出生的方式,就是屬靈的重生;
He granted to all one manner of birth, the spiritual;
15:153
眾人有同一個家鄉,就是在諸天之上的那個家鄉;
one fatherland belongs to all, the one in the heavens;
15:154
we all drink from the same cup.
15:155
祂並沒有賜給富人較多、較尊貴的,而賜給窮人較賤、較少的,乃是一同召了眾人;
He did not grant to the rich man more and something more honorable, and to the poor man something cheaper and less, but He called all alike;
15:156
He bestowed material things with equal honor, and spiritual things in like manner.
15:157
Whence then comes this great inequality in life? From the greed and arrogance of the rich.
15:158
But no, brethren, let these things be no more; nor, when the universal and more necessary things gather us into one, let us be divided by things earthly and paltry—I mean by wealth and poverty, by bodily kinship, by enmity and friendship.
15:159
For all these things are a shadow, and cheaper than a shadow, to those who possess the bond of love from above.
15:160
所以,讓我們保守這聯索堅固不斷,如此,那些分裂這極大合一的邪靈就一個也不能侵入;
Let us therefore keep this bond unbroken, and none of the wicked spirits that divide so great a union will be able to enter in;
15:161
which union may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom be glory to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
