'Then therefore Pilate delivered him to them, that he might be crucified.'
86:2
'And they took Jesus, and led him away.'
86:3
'And bearing his own cross, he went forth to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is Golgotha, where they crucified him.'
86:4
Prosperities are terrible things, apt to cast down and to sweep away those who are not on their guard.
86:5
So too the Jews, in the beginning enjoying the inclination of God's favor toward them, sought after the law of the Gentiles' kingdom, and in the wilderness, after the manna, remembered the onions.
86:6
In the very same manner here also, refusing the kingdom of Christ, they called down upon themselves the rule of Caesar.
86:7
For this cause, therefore, God set over them a king according to their own sentence.
86:8
Since, then, Pilate heard these things, he delivered him up to be crucified.
86:9
For he ought to have inquired whether Christ had indeed been eager to seize the tyranny; instead, out of fear alone he pronounced the sentence.
86:10
And yet, that he might not suffer this, Christ had said beforehand:
86:11
'My kingdom is not of this world.'
86:12
But Pilate, giving himself wholly over to present things, was unwilling to reflect on anything great.
86:13
And yet his wife's dream had been enough to strike him with terror.
86:14
But by none of these things did he become better, nor did he look toward heaven, but delivered him up.
86:15
And they laid the cross upon him, henceforth as upon one condemned.
86:16
For indeed they regarded the wood as an accursed thing, and could not even bear to touch it.
86:17
So it happened also in the type:
86:18
for Isaac too bore the wood.
86:19
只是那時,事情僅止於父親的意念(因為那不過是預表);
But then indeed the matter stopped at the father's intention (for it was a type);
86:20
but now it came forth even in the deeds themselves.
86:21
'And he came unto the Place of a Skull.'
86:22
有人說,亞當是死在那裡,也葬在那裡;
Some say that there Adam died and lies buried;
86:23
and that Jesus, in the place where death had reigned, there also set up his trophy.
86:24
他確是背著十字架出去,作為勝過死亡暴政的凱旋標記;
For indeed he went forth bearing the cross as a trophy against the tyranny of death;
86:25
and just as conquerors do, so he too bore upon his shoulders the symbol of victory.
86:26
For what does it matter, even if the Jews commanded these things with another intent? They crucify him also with robbers, herein too, though unwillingly, fulfilling the prophecy.
86:27
因為這些人出於羞辱所行的事,反倒成全了真理;
For the very things which these men did by way of insult contributed to the truth;
86:28
that you may learn how great is its power.
86:29
For this too the prophet had foretold from of old, that 'He was numbered with the transgressors.'
86:30
所以那惡魔想要遮蔽正在成就的事;
The demon therefore wished to cast a shadow over what was taking place;
86:31
因為三人都被釘了十字架,唯獨耶穌大放光輝;
for the three indeed were crucified, but Jesus alone shone forth;
86:32
that you may learn that his power wrought the whole.
86:33
雖然三人同被釘在十字架上,那些神蹟卻是如此發生的;
And yet, though the three were nailed upon the cross, the wonders came to pass in this way;
86:34
然而沒有一人把所發生的任何一件事歸給那其餘的人,只單單歸給耶穌;
yet nevertheless no one attributed any of the things that happened to any of those others, but to Jesus alone;
86:35
so stale did the devil's plot become, and the whole was turned back upon his own head.
86:36
For indeed of these two one was saved.
86:37
所以此事非但無損於那被釘者的榮耀,反倒對其大有貢獻;
Therefore he not only did no injury to the glory of the crucified one, but even contributed no little to it;
86:38
for to transform a robber upon the cross and to bring him into paradise was no less than to make the rocks quake.
86:39
And Pilate wrote also a title, at once taking vengeance on the Jews, and at once making a defense on Christ's behalf.
86:40
For since they had given him up as a malefactor, and were endeavoring to confirm this verdict by his fellowship with the robbers, so that henceforth it might be permitted to no one
86:41
藉惡意的控訴、把他當作某個卑劣邪惡之人來指控。彼拉多堵住了他們的口,也堵住一切想要控告之人的口,並顯明他們是背叛了自己的君王;於是他如同在凱旋碑上一般,立起了這名號,發出響亮的宣告,宣示得勝,並傳揚祂的國度,縱然不是完全地宣揚;
to bring wicked charges and to accuse him as some base and wicked person, Pilate—stopping their mouths, and the mouths of all who wished to accuse, and showing that they had risen up against their own king—set up the writing as upon a trophy, sending forth a resounding voice, declaring the victory, and proclaiming the kingdom, even if not in its fullness;
86:42
and this he made plain not in one tongue, but in three languages.
86:43
For since it was likely that many of mixed peoples were among the Jews because of the feast, so that no one might be ignorant of the vindication, he branded the madness of the Jews by means of all these tongues.
86:44
For indeed they envied him even when crucified.
86:45
And yet, what harm did this do you? None.
86:46
For if he was mortal and weak and about to be extinguished, why do you fear the writing that says he is King of the Jews? And what do they say? 'Write that he said it himself.'
86:47
因為照如今所寫的,這是一句判詞,是眾人共定的定案;
For now it is a declaration and a common verdict;
86:48
but if there be added, 'That man said it,' then the charge is shown to be one of his own rashness and arrogance.
86:49
But Pilate was not turned aside, but stood by his former judgment.
86:50
And no small thing is providentially ordered from hence also, but the whole.
86:51
因為那十字架的木頭曾被埋藏起來,既無人熱心去取回它——一則因懼怕臨到他們身上,二則因有緊迫的事催逼信徒趕往別處,而這木頭又要在日後才被尋找——並且那三個十字架很可能是同放一處;
For since the wood of the cross had been buried, inasmuch as no one was zealous to take it up—both because fear pressed upon them, and because pressing matters hastened the believers to other things, and it was to be sought out in later times—and it was likely that the three crosses lay together;
86:52
為要叫主的十字架不至無從辨認,它便向眾人顯明出來:首先是因它放在正中,其次也是藉那名號而顯明;
in order that the Master's cross might not be unknown, it became manifest to all, first from its lying in the midst, and then from the title;
86:53
for those of the robbers had no titles.
86:54
'And the soldiers parted the garments, but the coat they did not.'
86:55
See everywhere how, through the very things they did in their wickedness, the prophecies were fulfilled.
86:56
For this also had been foretold from of old.
86:57
其實當時是有三人被釘十字架的;
And yet indeed three men were being crucified;
86:58
but the things of the prophecies were being fulfilled upon him.
86:59
For why did they not do this with the others, but only with him? But do you consider with me the exactness of the prophecy.
86:60
For the prophet spoke not only of what they divided, but also of what they did not divide.
86:61
The garments then they divided, but the coat they did not divide, but committed the matter to a lot.
86:62
至於「從上頭織成的」這句話,也不是無故加上去的;
And the phrase 'woven from the top' is not set down without purpose;
86:63
but some say that by it an allegory is signified, namely that the crucified one was not simply a man, but also had his Godhead from above.
86:64
But some say that the evangelist is here recording the very fashion of the little coat.
86:65
For since in Palestine they weave garments by joining together two pieces of cloth, John, showing that the tunic was of this kind, says that it was 'woven from the top.'
86:66
And this, it seems to me, he says while hinting at the cheapness of the garments, and that just as in all other things, so also in his attire he sought the plain and simple fashion.
86:67
兵丁所做的乃是這些事;
Now the soldiers did these things;
86:68
but he, even as he was being crucified, commended his mother to the disciple, teaching us to exercise every care for those who begot us, even to our last breath.
86:69
Now when she importuned him unseasonably, he said,
86:70
'What have I to do with thee, woman?' and, 'Who is my mother?' But here he displays great tender affection, and commends her to the disciple whom he loved.
86:71
約翰再一次出於謙遜將自己隱藏起來;
Again John conceals himself out of modesty;
86:72
因為他若想自誇,必會加上他之所以蒙愛的緣由;
for if he had wished to boast, he would have added the reason on account of which he was loved;
86:73
and indeed it was likely to have been some great and wonderful thing.
86:74
But why does he say nothing else to John, nor console him in his dejection? Because it was not a fitting time for consolation by words.
86:75
And besides, it was no small thing to be honored with such an honor, and to receive the reward of his steadfast attendance.
86:76
But consider with me how, even while crucified, he did all things without disturbance—conversing with the disciple concerning his mother, fulfilling prophecies, holding out good hopes to the thief.
86:77
And yet before he was crucified he appears sweating, in agony, in dread.
86:78
What then is this? There is nothing perplexing here, nothing obscure.
86:79
因為在那裏所顯明的乃是祂人性的軟弱;
For there the weakness of his nature was shown;
86:80
but here the abundance of his power was displayed.
86:81
此外還有一層,主藉這兩件事一同教導我們:即使在患難臨到之前我們心裏慌亂,也不可因此就退避那患難;
And in another way too, by both these things he instructs us: that even if before dangers we are troubled, we should not on that account draw back from the dangers;
86:82
for once we have entered into the contest, all becomes most easy.
86:83
因此,我們不要懼怕死亡;
Let us not then tremble at death;
86:84
誠然,靈魂本性中原有貪生的傾向;
for the soul has by nature a love of life;
86:85
but it lies henceforth in our own power either to loosen its bonds and make the desire weak, or to bind it fast and render it more tyrannical.
86:86
正如我們有肉體結合的慾望,但當我們持守克己修德時,便削弱了它的專制;
For just as we have the desire for the union of bodies, yet when we practice self-discipline we make its tyranny weak,
86:87
so also it happens in the case of life.
86:88
因為正如神將肉體的慾望植入我們裏面,是為了生養兒女、延續我們的後代,卻並不攔阻人走那更高的節制之路;
For as God has implanted the desire of bodies for the sake of the begetting of children, providing for the succession of our race, yet not hindering the higher road of continence from being traveled;
86:89
so also he has sown the longing for life, forbidding us to destroy ourselves, yet not hindering us from despising the present life.
86:90
既知道這些,我們就當持守合宜的分寸:無論何時都不可自行奔赴死亡,縱使死亡帶著無數的可怖;
And knowing these things, we must keep the due measures, and neither go to death of our own accord at any time, though it should hold countless terrors;
86:91
nor, when dragged to it for the sake of what seems good to God, shrink back and hesitate, but with courage strip for the contest, preferring the life to come to the present one.
86:92
那時,婦女們站在十字架旁;
Now the women stood beside the cross;
86:93
那較為軟弱的性別,此時倒顯得更為剛勇;
and the weaker sex then appeared the more manly;
86:94
so completely was everything henceforth transformed.
86:95
And he himself, having commended his mother, says—
86:96
with how great an honor did he honor the disciple!
86:97
For since he himself was now departing, he handed her over to the disciple to care for her.
86:98
For since it was likely, being his mother, that she would grieve and seek protection, he fittingly entrusts her to the one she loved.
86:99
祂說這話,是要把他們二人聯結在愛裏;
And he said these things, knitting them together in love;
86:100
which indeed the disciple, understanding, took her to his own home.
86:101
For why did he make mention of no other woman, though another too was standing there? To teach us to render something more to our mothers.
86:102
因為正如當父母在屬靈的事上與我們作對時,我們甚至不當認他們;
For just as, when parents oppose us in spiritual matters, we ought not even to acknowledge them;
86:103
so, when they hinder in nothing, we ought to render them all that is fitting, and to set them before all others, in return for their bearing us, in return for their rearing us, in return for the countless hardships they endured.
86:104
In this way too he stops the shameless mouth of Marcion.
86:105
For if he was not born according to the flesh, nor had a mother, why does he take such great forethought for her alone? After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished—
86:106
that is, that nothing was lacking to the divine economy.
86:107
因為祂處處都竭力顯明這死是何等奇特的死——既然全然在乎那將死者的權柄,並且死亡在祂自己願意之前,都不臨到那身體;
For everywhere he was earnest to show that this death was a strange one, seeing that the whole matter lay in the power of him who was dying, and that death did not come upon the body until he himself willed it;
86:108
and he willed it after fulfilling all things.
86:109
'I have power to lay down my life, and I have power to take it again.'
86:110
Knowing then that all things were fulfilled, he says, 'I thirst,' here again fulfilling a prophecy.
86:111
But consider with me the abominable conduct of those who stood by.
86:112
因為縱使我們有無數的仇敵,並且受過無可挽回的傷害,然而當我們看見他們被處死時,心也會軟化屈服;
For though we may have countless enemies, and have suffered irreparable wrongs, yet when we see them being put to death, we are bowed with compassion;
86:113
但這些人卻連如此也不肯與祂和好,也不因所見的事變得溫和,反倒愈發兇殘,變本加厲地譏誚祂;
but these men were not even so reconciled to him, nor made gentle by the things they saw, but rather grew more savage and heightened their mockery;
86:114
and having applied a sponge with vinegar, they gave him to drink in such a way as it is offered to condemned criminals—for which reason the hyssop too is added.
86:115
Having received it then, he says, 'It is finished.'
86:116
Do you see him doing all things without disturbance and with authority? And what follows makes this plain also.
86:117
For since all had been accomplished, 'having bowed his head' (for neither was this nailed fast), 'he gave up the spirit,' that is, he breathed his last.
86:118
然而斷氣並非在低頭之後才發生;
And yet the giving up of the spirit did not come after the bowing of the head;
86:119
因為祂並非因斷了氣才低下頭,如我們一般人所發生的那樣;
for it was not because he breathed his last that he bowed his head, which is what happens in our case;
86:120
but because he bowed his head, then he breathed his last.
86:121
By all these things the evangelist showed that he himself was Lord of all.
86:122
But the Jews again—those who swallow the camel and strain out the gnat—having wrought so great an outrage, are scrupulous about the day.
86:123
For since it was now the day of Preparation, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross, they asked Pilate that their legs might be broken.
86:124
Do you see how strong the truth is? By the very means through which those men are zealous, through these the prophecy is fulfilled.
86:125
For from these another foretelling of theirs receives its fulfillment.
86:126
The legs of the others they broke, but those of Christ no longer.
86:127
But nevertheless these men, to gratify the Jews, pierced his side with the spear, and thus henceforth insulted the dead body.
86:128
O the abominable and accursed purpose!
86:129
But be not troubled, nor cast down, beloved.
86:130
For the things which they did from an evil intent, these were contending on the side of the truth.
86:131
For there was a prophecy which said even from this,
86:132
'They shall look on him whom they pierced.'
86:133
And not this only, but the deed that was dared also became a proof of faith to those who were about to disbelieve, such as Thomas and those like him.
86:134
And together with this an unspeakable mystery too was being accomplished.
86:135
這些泉源湧流出來,並非隨意,也非出於偶然;
And these fountains did not flow forth simply or by mere chance;
86:136
but because the Church is constituted of both of these.
86:137
And they who are initiated into the mysteries know this: born again through water, and nourished through the blood and the flesh.
86:138
From this point the mysteries take their beginning, so that when you approach the awesome cup, you may approach it as though drinking from that very side.
86:139
這事那親眼看見的人已經作了見證,並且他的見證是真的;
And this he who saw it has borne witness to, and his witness is true;
86:140
that is to say: I did not hear it from others, but I myself was present and saw it, and the witness is true.
86:141
因為他所敘述的,是一樁施加於祂身上的凌辱之事;
For he is recounting an outrage that took place;
86:142
他所敘述的並非什麼偉大奇妙之事,以致使你對他的話生疑;
he is not recounting some great and marvelous thing, such as might make you suspicious of his account;
86:143
but he himself, safeguarding against the mouths of the heretics, and proclaiming beforehand the mysteries that were to come, and beholding the treasure stored up in these things, speaks with precision concerning what occurred.
86:144
And that prophecy also is fulfilled, that 'A bone of him shall not be broken.'
86:145
For even though this was spoken concerning the lamb of the Jews, yet for the sake of the truth the type ran ahead, and it was fulfilled the more fully in this case.
86:146
For this reason he also brought the prophet into the midst.
86:147
For since, bringing himself forward again and again, he did not seem to be worthy of credit, he introduces Moses, saying that this did not happen simply, but was written beforehand from of old.
86:148
And this is that saying, that 'A bone of him shall not be broken.'
86:149
And again he lends credibility to the prophet from himself.
86:150
'These things,' he says, 'I have spoken, that you may learn how great is the kinship of the type to the truth.'
86:151
Do you see how much zeal he uses in order that what seems to be a reproach and to bring shame may be believed? For that the soldier should outrage even a dead body was far worse than being crucified.
86:152
'But nevertheless,' he says, 'I have spoken even these things, and spoken them with much diligence, that you may believe.'
86:153
Let no one therefore disbelieve, nor, being ashamed, do injury to our cause.
86:154
For the very things that seem to be most reproachful, these are the boast of our blessings.
86:155
這些事以後,有一個亞利馬太人約瑟前來,他是一個門徒;
After these things there came Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple;
86:156
not of the twelve, but perhaps of the seventy.
86:157
For thereafter, supposing that the wrath had been quenched by the cross, they came forward with confidence, and took care of the burial.
86:158
Coming forward, therefore, he asks the favor from Pilate, and that man grants it.
86:159
For why should he not? Nicodemus also joins in assisting him, and makes the burial costly.
86:160
For they were still disposed toward him as toward a mere man.
86:161
他們帶來那些香料,是特別能使身體長久保存、不容它迅速朽壞的;
And they bring those spices which are especially able to preserve the body for a long time, and not to allow it quickly to yield to corruption;
86:162
這乃是那些對祂並不設想有何偉大之處的人所行的;
which was the act of those who imagined nothing great concerning him;
86:163
yet nevertheless they displayed much tender affection.
86:164
But how was it that none of the twelve came forward, not John, not Peter, nor any other of the notable ones? And the disciple does not conceal even this.
86:165
因為若有人以懼怕猶太人為由來解釋,那麼這些人同樣也被同一種懼怕所轄制;
For if one should allege the fear of the Jews, these men too were held fast by the same fear;
86:166
for this man too was, it says, 'hidden for fear of the Jews.'
86:167
And no one can say that he did this out of exceeding contempt for them, but though he too was afraid, nevertheless he came forward.
86:168
But John, though present and having seen him expire, did no such thing.
86:169
那麼這是為何呢?在我看來,他是那些極顯要的人中的一位(從那安葬所用之物也可看出),並且是彼拉多所熟識的人;
What then is it? To me he seems to have been one of the very notable men (and this is plain also from the burial garments), and to have been well known to Pilate;
86:170
and so he now buries him, not as one condemned, but according to the custom of the Jews, sumptuously, as some great and admirable person.
86:171
But since they were pressed by the time (for the death having taken place at the ninth hour,
86:172
and then, while they were meanwhile going to Pilate and taking down the body, it was likely that evening would overtake them, in which it was not lawful to work), they lay him in the nearby tomb.
86:173
並且這乃是安排妥當的,要把祂安放在一座無人葬過的新墳墓裡,免得有人以為那復活是屬於另一個與祂同葬的人的;
And it was so arranged that he should be laid in a new tomb, where no one had been laid, so that the resurrection might not be thought to have belonged to some other person who lay with him;
86:174
又叫門徒能夠容易地前來,成為所發生之事的目擊者,因那地方近便;
and that the disciples might be able to come easily and become eyewitnesses of what took place, the place being near;
86:175
and that not they alone, but also the enemies, might be witnesses of the burial.
86:176
因為在墳墓上加封印,又派兵丁在那裡把守看守,這乃是為那安葬作見證的行為;
For to set seals upon the tomb, and for soldiers to be stationed there as guards, was the act of men bearing witness to the burial;
86:177
for Christ was as eager that this should be confessed no less than the resurrection.
86:178
Wherefore the disciples too take much pains about this, so as to show that he died.
86:179
至於復活,此後的一切歲月都將加以證實;
For the resurrection all the time that followed was to establish;
86:180
but the other, if it had then been thrown into shadow and had not become quite manifest, would have done injury to the doctrine of the resurrection.
86:181
And it was not only for these reasons that he was laid nearby, but also so that the story about the theft might be shown to be false.
86:182
And on the first day of the week (that is, the Lord's Day), while it was yet deep dawn, Mary Magdalene comes early, and sees the stone taken away from the tomb. For he had risen while both the stone and the seals still lay upon it.
86:183
But since it was necessary that the others also should be fully assured, the tomb is opened after the resurrection, and thus what had happened is confirmed.
86:184
This, at any rate, moved Mary also.
86:185
For being very tenderly affectionate toward the Teacher, when the sabbath was past, she could not bear to remain at rest, but came while it was yet deep dawn, desiring to find some consolation from the place.
86:186
And seeing the place, and the stone taken away, she did not go in, nor stoop down, but ran to the disciples out of her great longing.
86:187
For this was what she was intent upon: she wished with all speed to learn what had become of the body.
86:188
For her running intended this, and her words make this plain.
86:189
For 'They have taken away,' she says, 'my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.'
86:190
你看她那時對復活還一無所知,反倒以為那身體被人挪走了,並且毫不虛飾地把一切都報告給門徒麼?福音書作者並沒有奪去這婦人如此大的嘉許,也不以為門徒從她先徹夜守候的人得知這些事是一種羞恥;
Do you see how she knew nothing clear as yet concerning the resurrection, but supposed that a removal of the body had taken place, and reports everything to the disciples without artifice? And the evangelist did not deprive the woman of so great a commendation, nor did he count it a shame that they should learn these things from her, who had first kept vigil through the night;
86:191
so everywhere the truth-loving character of his ways shines forth.
86:192
所以她一來,說了這些話,那些人聽見了,就極其殷勤地來到墳墓那裡,看見那些細麻布還放著;
When therefore she had come and said these things, those men, having heard, with much diligence come to the tomb, and behold the linen cloths lying;
86:193
which was a sign of the resurrection.
86:194
因為若有人把它挪走了,斷不會先把身體剝去布再這樣做;
For neither, if any had removed it, would they have done this after stripping the body;
86:195
若他們偷了去,也斷不會費心去取下那裹頭巾、把它捲好、安放在一處;
nor, if they had stolen it, would they have taken thought to take up the napkin and fold it and lay it in one place;
86:196
but how? They would have taken the body just as it was.
86:197
為此約翰預先說明祂是與許多沒藥同葬的,那沒藥使細麻布黏著身體,其緊固不亞於鉛;
For on this account John, anticipating, says that he was buried with much myrrh, which no less than lead cements the linen cloths to the body;
86:198
that, when you hear that the napkins lay by themselves, you may not endure those who say that he was stolen.
86:199
For the thief was not so foolish as to expend such great pains upon a superfluous matter.
86:200
For why should he leave the napkins? And how could he escape notice in doing this? For it was likely that he would spend much time, and by loitering and delaying would be caught in the act.
86:201
And why then do the linen cloths lie by themselves, and the napkin wrapped up by itself? That you may learn that it was not the deed of men in haste or in confusion—to place and fold these apart from those and those apart from these.
86:202
From this they believed in the resurrection.
86:203
For this reason Christ afterward appears to them, when they had been assured by the sight.
86:204
Observe, then, here too the freedom from vanity of the evangelist, how he bears witness to Peter's accuracy in the search.
86:205
因為他跑得比彼得快,看見細麻布放在那裡,就不再深究,反而退到一旁;
For having outrun him and seen the linen cloths lying there, he inquires no further, but stands aside;
86:206
But that ardent one, having gone further in, examined everything carefully and saw something more; and then this one too was moved to belief by the sight.
86:207
For entering after him, he saw the burial wrappings lying there.
86:208
For to have parted them, and to have laid this apart and that apart after rolling it up, was the work of one acting with care, and not of one thrown into disorder by chance.
86:209
But when you hear that the Master rose naked, cease from your frenzy over funeral rites.
86:210
For what does this superfluous and useless expense intend, bringing much loss to those who bury, yet no gain at all to the departed—nay, if one must speak the truth, even harm? For the costliness of the burial has often been the cause of grave-robbing, and has made him who was carefully buried lie naked and unburied.
86:211
how great a tyranny it displays even in mourning, how great a folly!
86:212
Many, at any rate, so that this may not happen, have cut up those fine linen cloths and filled them with abundant spices, so that they may be doubly useless to those who would abuse them, and thus have committed them to the earth.
86:213
Is this not the act of men out of their senses—to make a display of lavishness, and again to destroy it? 'Yes,' he says;
86:214
'in order that these things may lie safely beside the dead, we contrive all this.'
86:215
那又如何呢?盜墓者若不取去,蟲蛀與蛆蟲豈不要取去嗎?再者,蟲蛀與蛆蟲若不取去,歲月與腐化豈不要將它們毀壞嗎?但就算我們姑且假定,盜墓者、蟲蛀、蛆蟲、歲月,或其他任何事物,都不會消耗那安放之物;
What then? If the grave-robbers do not take them, will not the moths and the worms take them? And again, if the moths and worms do not take them, will not time and corruption destroy them? But let us grant that neither grave-robbers, nor moths, nor worms, nor time, nor anything else consumes what lies there;
86:216
又姑且假定身體直到復活都完好無損,這些物件也保持嶄新、如剛製成一般、精緻如故——那麼當身體赤身復活,而這些卻留在此處、在那審判之時對我們毫無益處,這對逝者又多添了甚麼益處呢?那麼有人問:這在基督身上為何又如此行呢?首先,切莫將這些事與人間的事相比;
and grant further that the body remains untouched until the resurrection, and that these very things are kept new, freshly made, and fine—what more comes of this to the departed, when the body is raised naked, but these remain here and profit us nothing toward that reckoning? Why then, one asks, did it take place in the case of Christ? Above all, do not compare these things with human affairs;
86:217
since the harlot also poured out ointment upon those holy feet of His.
86:218
But if we must speak concerning these matters too—
86:219
in the first place, these things were done by those who did not yet know the doctrine of the resurrection.
86:220
'As was the custom of the Jews.'
86:221
For it was not those of the Twelve who thus honored Christ, but those others who did not greatly honor Him.
86:222
The Twelve, at any rate, honored Him not in this way, but by death and slaughter and by the perils they endured for His sake.
86:223
That indeed was also an honor, but far inferior to the one of which I spoke.
86:224
但除此以外,正如我在講論中所說的,我們現今的話題所論的是凡人;
But apart from that, as I said in speaking, our discourse now concerns human beings;
86:225
whereas at that time these things were done concerning the Master.
86:226
And that you may learn that Christ takes no account of these things, He said:
86:227
「你們見我餓了,就給我吃;
'You saw Me hungry, and you fed Me;
86:228
渴了,就給我喝;
and thirsty, and you gave Me drink;
86:229
and naked, and you clothed Me.'
86:230
And nowhere did He say, 'And dead, and you buried Me.'
86:231
我說這些話,並非要廢除埋葬;
And I say these things not to abolish burial;
86:232
but to cut away wastefulness and untimely ostentation.
86:233
'For it is the passion,' one says, 'and the grief, and the sympathy toward the departed that persuade us to these things.'
86:234
These are not the marks of sympathy toward the departed, but of vainglory.
86:235
For if you wish to grieve together with the dead, I show you another way of burial, and I teach you to lay on him garments that will rise together with him and make him resplendent.
86:236
For these garments are neither consumed by moths, nor wasted by time, nor stolen by grave-robbers.
86:237
What sort of garments are these? The robe of almsgiving.
86:238
因為這件長衣要與他一同復活;
For this robe rises together with him;
86:239
for the seal of almsgiving is with him.
86:240
From these garments shine forth those who then hear, 'You fed Me when I was hungry.'
86:241
這些衣裳使人顯赫,使人榮耀,使人立於穩妥之中;
These make men conspicuous, these make them illustrious, these establish them in safety;
86:242
but the things of the present are nothing else than food for moths and a table for worms.
86:243
And I say these things not to forbid the burying, but that it be done with moderation, so as to cover the body and not to deliver it naked to the earth.
86:244
For if He commands the living to have nothing more than covering,
86:245
much more the dead.
86:246
For the body that has died does not need garments as does one living and breathing.
86:247
因為我們活著的時候,既為禦寒,又為端莊得體,需要衣裳的遮蓋;
For while living, we need the clothing of garments both for the sake of cold and of decency;
86:248
但既已死了,這些都不再需要了,我們所需要的只是裹屍布,好使身體不至赤裸躺臥;
but having died, we need none of these things, yet we do need the grave-clothes, that the body may not lie naked;
86:249
and even before the grave-clothes we have a most beautiful covering, the earth, more befitting the nature of such bodies.
86:250
If then, where there are so many needs, one ought to seek nothing superfluous,
86:251
much more, where the necessity is not so great, is the ostentation untimely.
86:252
'But those who see will laugh,' one says.
86:253
首先,即使真有人譏笑,也不當太在意那如此極度愚昧的人;
Above all, even if there be someone who laughs, one ought not to make much account of him who is so exceedingly foolish;
86:254
but as it is, there are many rather who marvel and who accept our philosophy.
86:255
For these things are not worthy of laughter, but rather what we now do—wailing, mourning, burying ourselves together with the departed.
86:256
These are worthy both of laughter and of punishment.
86:257
But to practice wisdom both in these matters and in moderation of garments procures for us crowns and praises; and all will applaud us and marvel at the power of Christ, and will say:
86:258
'Wonderful! How great is the strength of the Crucified One!
86:259
祂已使那必死必朽的人信服:死並非真正的死;
He has persuaded those who perish and pass away that death is not death;
86:260
and so they do not act as those who perish, but rather as those who send others forth on a better journey.'
86:261
He has persuaded them that this corruptible and earthly body will put on a garment far more resplendent than those of silk and gold-inwoven—namely, incorruption.
86:262
Wherefore they take no great pains over the burial, but regard a virtuous life as a marvelous shroud.
86:263
他們若見人如此持守智慧,就必說出這些話;
These things, if they see men practicing wisdom, they will say;
86:264
but if they see men bowed down, behaving effeminately, gathering choruses of wailing women, they will laugh and mock and heap up countless accusations, ridiculing the vain expense and the fruitless toil.
86:265
因為我們的確聽見眾人都這樣責難;
For indeed we hear all men bringing these accusations;
86:266
因為當我們妝飾那正被腐化與蛆蟲所吞噬的身體,卻漠視基督受渴、赤身露體、四處漂泊為客旅時,我們還有甚麼可辯白的呢?所以,我們當止住這徒然的熱心;
For what defense shall we have, when we adorn the body that is being consumed into corruption and worms, but overlook Christ thirsting, going about naked and a stranger? Let us therefore cease from this vain zeal;
86:267
讓我們照著對我們和對他們都有益、並歸榮耀與神的方式,安葬逝者;
let us bury the departed as is profitable both to us and to them, unto the glory of God;
86:268
let us perform much almsgiving on their behalf, let us send with them the most excellent provisions for the journey.
86:269
For if the memory of wonderful men who have died has stood as a protection for the living (for He says, 'I will shield this city for My own sake and for the sake of David My servant'), much more will almsgiving accomplish this.
86:270
For this—yes, this—even raised the dead, when the widows stood around showing all that Dorcas made while she was with them.
86:271
When, therefore, someone is about to die, let the kinsman of the dying prepare the grave-clothes, and let him persuade the departing one to leave something to those in need.
86:272
With these garments let him send him forth, and let him persuade him to leave Christ also as heir.
86:273
因為君王藉著立人為繼承人,尚且給他們的家人留下極大的保障;
For if kings, by enrolling men as heirs, leave to their households immense security;
86:274
consider how much goodwill he who leaves Christ along with his children will draw both to himself and to all who are his.
86:275
這些才是美好的殮葬之物;
These are the fair burial-garments;
86:276
these profit both those who remain and those who depart.
86:277
我們若這樣被殮葬,就必在復活的時刻放出光輝;
If we are buried in this manner, we shall be resplendent at the season of the resurrection;
86:278
but if, while tending the body, we neglect the soul, we shall suffer many dreadful things there and incur much derision.
86:279
因為赤裸裸地失去德行而離世,並非尋常的羞恥;
For it is no ordinary disgrace to depart stripped bare of virtue;
86:280
nor is a body cast out unburied so put to shame as a soul is when it then appears bare of virtue.
86:281
讓我們為靈魂穿上衣裳,讓我們把它裹好,最要緊的是在我們一生的年日中如此行;
Let us clothe the soul, let us wrap it about, most of all throughout the whole of our lifetime;
86:282
but if here we have been negligent, let us at least be sober as we come to our end, and let us charge our own household to work together with us after we have departed, by means of almsgiving on our behalf.
86:283
Thus, being helped by one another, may we attain to great boldness, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
