'And as Jesus passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.'
57:2
'And His disciples asked Him, saying:'
57:3
'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?'
57:4
'And as Jesus passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.'
57:5
Being exceedingly loving toward mankind, and caring for our salvation, and wishing to stop the mouths of the ungrateful, He omits nothing of what pertains to Himself, even though there be none to give heed.
57:6
This indeed the Prophet also knew when he said:
57:7
'That You might be justified in Your words, and might prevail when You are judged.'
57:8
正因如此,在這裡也是這樣:他們既不領受祂話語的崇高,反倒稱祂是被鬼附著的,並且想要殺祂,祂就出了聖殿,去醫治一個瞎子——既以自己的離去平息他們的怒氣,又藉著行這神蹟軟化他們的剛硬殘忍,同時證實祂所說的話;
For this very reason here too, since they did not receive the loftiness of His words, but even called Him one possessed by a demon, and attempted to kill Him, He went out of the temple and healed a blind man — both soothing their wrath by His absence, and by the working of the miracle softening their hardness and cruelty, and confirming what He had spoken;
57:9
and He works a miracle, not any ordinary one, but one then happening for the first time.
57:10
'For since the world began,' it is said, 'it was never heard that anyone opened the eyes of one born blind.'
57:11
因為若是後來變瞎的人,或許曾有人開過他的眼睛;
For of one who had become blind, perhaps someone had opened the eyes;
57:12
And that, having gone out from the temple, He came to this work of set purpose, is plain from this:
57:13
因為是祂看見了那瞎子,而不是那瞎子上前來就近祂;
for it was He who saw the blind man, and not the blind man who approached Him;
57:14
and He restored his sight so earnestly as even to give His disciples occasion to perceive it.
57:15
It was from this, at any rate, that they were led to their question.
57:16
For seeing Him attending so earnestly to the man, they inquired, saying:
57:17
'Who sinned, this man or his parents?' The question is mistaken.
57:18
For how could he have sinned before he was born? And how, if his parents had sinned, could he himself have been punished? Whence, then, did they come to this question? Before this, when healing the paralytic, He had said:
57:19
These men, then, supposing that the paralytic had been paralyzed on account of sin, say:
57:20
「就算那人是因罪過而癱瘓的;
'Granted that that man was paralyzed on account of sins;
57:21
但論到這人,你會怎麼說呢?是這人犯了罪嗎?」然而這是說不通的;
but concerning this man what would you say? Did this man sin?' But it cannot be said;
57:22
for he is blind from birth.
57:23
'But his parents?' Nay, not this either.
57:24
For a child does not pay the penalty for its father.
57:25
Just as, then, when we see a little child in distress we say:
57:26
「對此能說什麼呢?這孩子做了什麼呢?」——並不是真在發問,而是感到困惑;
'What could one say about this? What has the child done?'—not really asking, but being at a loss;
57:27
so also the disciples said this not so much as asking, but rather being perplexed.
57:28
What, then, does Christ say? 'Neither did this man sin, nor his parents.'
57:29
But He says this not to acquit them of sins (for He did not say simply, 'Neither did this man sin, nor his parents,'
57:30
'that he should be born blind'), but that the Son of God might be glorified.
57:31
因為這人和他的父母確實都犯過罪;
For both this man and his parents did indeed sin;
57:32
'but,' He says, 'the blindness did not come from this.'
57:33
And He said these things, not indicating that this man indeed was not so afflicted, while certain others were blinded for these causes, on account of their parents' sins.
57:34
For it cannot be that, when one sins, another is punished.
57:35
Since, if we grant this, we shall also grant that other point—that he sinned before his birth.
57:36
所以,正如祂說「也不是這人犯了罪」時,並不是說人可以生來就犯罪並受罰;
As therefore, in saying, 'Neither did this man sin,' He does not mean that it is possible to sin and be punished from birth;
57:37
so also in saying, 'Neither his parents,' He did not mean that it is possible to be punished on account of one's parents.
57:38
For indeed through Ezekiel too He does away with this supposition:
57:39
'As I live, saith the Lord, this parable that is spoken shall no longer be used—'
57:40
this proverb that is spoken:
57:41
'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.'
57:42
'The father shall not die for the child.'
57:43
And concerning a certain king He says that for this reason he did not do a certain thing, keeping the law of Moses.
57:44
But if anyone says, 'How then is it said, He who requiteth the sins of the parents upon the children unto the third and fourth generation?'—to that we would reply that the pronouncement is not universal, but was spoken concerning certain of those who came out of Egypt.
57:45
What He means is something like this:
57:46
Since those who came out of Egypt, after the signs and wonders of their forefathers, became worse than those who had beheld none of these things, they shall suffer, He says, the same things which those others suffered, seeing that they have dared to do the same things.
57:47
And that it was spoken concerning those men, one who examines the passage more carefully will perceive.
57:48
For what reason, then, was he born blind? 'That the glory of God might be made manifest,' He says.
57:49
Behold again another difficulty, whether apart from this man's punishment it was not possible for the glory of God to appear.
57:50
然而經上並沒有說這是不可能的;
But indeed it is not said that it was not possible;
57:51
rather, that in this case too it might be made manifest.
57:52
'What then?' says he; 'was he wronged for the sake of God's glory?' What wrong, tell me?
57:53
For what if He had not willed to bring him into being at all?
57:54
But I say that he was actually benefited by his blindness.
57:55
For he recovered the eyes that are within.
57:56
For what profit had the Jews of their eyes? For they incurred a greater punishment, being blinded even while they saw.
57:57
And what harm had this man from his blindness? For through it he recovered his sight.
57:58
所以,正如今生所謂的禍患並非真是禍患;
As therefore the evils of the present life are not evils;
57:59
照樣,今生所謂的福樂也並非真是福樂;
so neither are its good things good;
57:60
but sin alone is an evil, while blindness is not an evil.
57:61
And He who brought him from non-being into being had authority even so to leave him thus.
57:62
這副詞並非表原因,而是表結果;
that this adverb is not causal, but denotes the outcome;
57:63
as, for instance, when He says, 'For judgment I am come into this world, that they who see not might see, and they who see might become blind.'
57:64
And yet it was not for this that He came, that they who see might become blind.
57:65
'For that which may be known of God is manifest in them, so that they are without excuse.'
57:66
And yet it was not for this that He showed it to them, that they might be deprived of excuse, but that they might obtain excuse.
57:67
'And the law entered, that the offence might abound.'
57:68
And yet it was not for this that it entered, but that sin might be restrained.
57:69
你看見那副詞處處都是表結果的嗎?正如一位極高明的建築師,把房屋的一部分建成,另一部分卻留著未完工,好叫他能藉著那未完成的部分,向不信的人證明關乎全屋的本領;
Do you see that everywhere the adverb denotes the outcome? For just as some excellent builder, having built one part of the house and left another part unfinished, so that through what remains he may give proof to the unbelieving concerning the whole;
57:70
神也是如此,好比修補一座朽壞的房屋一般,將我們的身體黏合並修復,醫治那枯乾的手,收緊那癱瘓的肢體,矯正那瘸腿的,潔淨那長大痲瘋的,扶起那患病的,使那雙腿殘廢的復完,呼喚那死了的從死裡復生,開那閉著的眼睛,並將本來沒有的眼睛賜給人;
so also God, as it were some dilapidated house, glues together and fills up our body, healing the withered hand, bracing up the paralyzed limbs, setting straight the lame, cleansing the lepers, raising up the sick, making whole those maimed in their legs, calling the dead back from death, opening eyes that were closed, and supplying eyes that were not there;
57:71
all which things, being defects belonging to natural weakness, He then corrected, and so displayed His power.
57:72
And in saying, 'That the glory of God might be made manifest,' He speaks concerning Himself, not concerning the Father.
57:73
For the Father's glory was already manifest.
57:74
For since they had heard that God made man, taking dust from the earth, for this reason He too fashioned him in this way.
57:75
因為若說「我就是那取地上塵土造人的」,在聽者看來似乎顯得刺耳(難以接受);
For to say, 'I am He who took dust from the earth and fashioned man,' seemed to be offensive to His hearers;
57:76
but this being shown through the deed itself, thenceforth gave no more offence.
57:77
Wherefore indeed He too, taking dust and mixing it with the spittle, thus made manifest His hidden glory.
57:78
For it was no small glory to be accounted the Creator of the creation.
57:79
For from this the other truths also came in together; from the part the whole too was confirmed.
57:80
For the belief concerning the greater confirmed also the lesser.
57:81
For man is more honourable than all the creation, and than the members within us the eye is more honourable.
57:82
For this reason He fashioned the eyes not in some ordinary way, but after that particular manner.
57:83
For though the member is small in size, it is more necessary than the whole body.
57:84
If the ear should say, 'Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,' is it for this reason not of the body? For indeed all the things within us are a demonstration of the wisdom of God.
57:85
This, then, is what steers the whole body; this it is that works beauty for the entire body; this adorns the countenance; this is the lamp of all the members.
57:86
For what the sun is throughout the inhabited world, that the eye is in the body.
57:87
If you quench the sun, you have destroyed and thrown all things into confusion.
57:88
If you quench the eyes, then feet too are useless, and hands, and the very soul.
57:89
因為這些一旦受損殘廢,知識便消失了;
For knowledge is gone once these are maimed;
57:90
for it is through these that we have come to know God.
57:91
For His invisible things, from the creation of the world, are clearly perceived, being understood by the things that are made.
57:92
So the eye is a lamp not to the body alone, but even before the body, to the soul.
57:93
For this reason it is set as it were in some royal place, having obtained the region above, and presiding over the other senses.
57:94
Then, that you might not suppose He has need of matter when He makes, and that you might learn that not even at the beginning did He have need of clay (for He who brought the greater substances into being out of things that were not, much more made this one without matter),
57:95
所以為叫你明白,祂如此行並非出於需要,乃是要教導人,那位在起初的創造主就是祂自己,經上說祂用泥土塗抹;
that you might therefore learn that He does this not out of need, but teaching that He Himself is the Creator who was in the beginning, He anointed the clay, He says;
57:96
that you might know: 'I do not need clay in order to make eyes, but that in it My glory might be made manifest.'
57:97
For that He speaks concerning Himself, having said, 'That the glory of God might be made manifest,' He added:
57:98
'I must work the works of Him that sent Me;'
57:99
that is, 'I must manifest Myself, and do the things that can show Me doing the same things as the Father'—not such things, but the same things, which belongs to a greater exactness of identity, and which is said of those that differ not even in the least degree.
57:100
那麼,見祂能行與父同樣的事,誰還敢正面與祂抗衡呢?因為祂不僅造成了眼睛,也不僅開了眼睛,更賜下了看見的能力;
Who then will any longer look Him in the face in opposition, seeing Him able to do the same things as the Father? For He did not merely form eyes, nor merely open them, but also bestowed the power of seeing;
57:101
which is a proof that He also breathed in a soul.
57:102
For if that does not operate, the eye, even though it be perfectly complete, could never see anything.
57:103
So that He bestowed also the operation that comes from the soul, and gave the member having all things—arteries, and nerves, and veins, and blood, and all the other things out of which our body is composed.
57:104
'I must work while it is day.'
57:105
What do these words mean? And what connection have they? Much.
57:106
For what He says is of this sort:
57:107
While it is day, while it is permitted to men to believe in Me, while this present life stands, I must work.
57:108
'Night comes,' that is, the time to come,
57:109
when no one can work.
57:110
He did not say, 'When I cannot work,'
57:111
but 'When no one can work,' that is, when there is no longer faith, nor labors, nor repentance.
57:112
For that He calls faith a work, they say to Him:
57:113
'What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?' He says:
57:114
'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.'
57:115
How then can no one work this work at that time? Because there is no longer faith, but willing and unwilling alike they shall obey.
57:116
For lest anyone should say that He does this out of vainglory, He shows that it is out of sparing them that He works all things, since here alone they have the power to believe, and there can no longer reap any fruit.
57:117
For this reason He did what He did without the blind man even having approached.
57:118
For that he was worthy to be healed, and that, had he been able to see, he would have believed and come forward, and had he heard from someone that He was present, he would not thus have been indifferent—this is plain from what follows, from his courage, from his faith itself.
57:119
For it was likely that he should reflect and say:
57:120
'Whatever is this? He made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, Go, wash.'
57:121
'Could He not have healed me, and then sent me to Siloam? Many a time have I washed there with many others, and enjoyed no benefit at all.'
57:122
'If He had any power, being present He would have healed me;'
57:123
which is the very thing Naaman also said to Elisha.
57:124
For he too, when bidden to go and wash in the Jordan, was incredulous, and that though so great a report existed concerning Elisha.
57:125
But the blind man was not incredulous, nor did he gainsay,
57:126
也沒有心裡盤算:「這到底是甚麼事?非得敷上泥不可嗎?這反倒更像是使人失明;
nor did he reason within himself, 'Whatever is this? Was it necessary to lay on clay? This is rather to blind;
57:127
who ever recovered sight in this way?' But he reasoned none of these things.
57:128
Do you see faith firm and steadfast, and eagerness? 'Night comes.'
57:129
By this He shows that even after the cross He is about to provide for the ungodly, and to draw many.
57:130
But after this He utterly cuts them off.
57:131
'While I am in the world, I am the light of the world;'
57:132
'Believe, while the light is with you.'
57:133
Why ever did Paul call the present life night, and that other one day? Not opposing Christ, but saying the same things, if not in words, yet in meaning.
57:134
For he says, 'The night is far spent, and the day is at hand.'
57:135
他稱今時為黑夜,是因為那些坐在黑暗中的人,或是因為它要被那白晝所接續;
For he calls the present time night on account of those who sit in darkness, or because it is taken up into that Day;
57:136
but Christ calls the time to come night, on account of the inactivity of sinful deeds.
57:137
And Paul calls the present life night, because those who spend their time in wickedness and unbelief are in darkness.
57:138
Discoursing therefore with the faithful, he said:
57:139
「黑夜已深,白晝將近」,彷彿是說他們將要享受那光;
'The night is far spent, and the day is at hand,' as of those about to enjoy that Light;
57:140
and he calls the old manner of life night.
57:141
'For let us cast off,' he says, 'the works of darkness.'
57:142
Do you see that he says it is night for those? Wherefore he says:
57:143
'Let us walk becomingly as in the day, that we may enjoy that Light.'
57:144
For if this light is so fair, consider how great that other shall be.
57:145
For by as much as the sun's light is better than that of a lamp, by so much, and much more, is that better than this.
57:146
And declaring this He said, that 'The sun shall be darkened,' that is, on account of the superabundance of that radiance, this one too shall not appear.
57:147
But if now, for the sake of having bright and airy houses, we spend countless sums of money, building and taking pains,
57:148
consider how we ought to spend even our very bodies, that bright dwellings may be built for us in the heavens, where is that ineffable Light.
57:149
因為在此地有為地界和牆垣而起的爭鬥和爭競;
For here there are battles and contentions over boundaries and walls;
57:150
但在那裡卻沒有這樣的事;
but there is nothing of the sort there;
57:151
nor will anyone contend with us over boundary-lines.
57:152
This house we must of all necessity leave behind, but that other one abides with us continually.
57:153
This one must needs rot with time and be subject to countless injuries, but that one remains ageless forever.
57:154
This house the poor man cannot build, but that one may be built even with two mites, as the widow did.
57:155
For this reason I am choked with grief: that, with so many good things set before us, we are slothful and careless; and that we do everything to have splendid houses here,
57:156
yet as to gaining even a small dwelling in the heavens, we take no care, we give no thought.
57:157
你願意在此世何處置產呢?是在曠野,還是在某座小城裡?我想你不願;
Where would you wish to have a house here? In the wilderness, or in one of the little towns? I think not;
57:158
but rather in the most royal and great cities, where trade is more abundant, where the renown is greater.
57:159
But I lead you to such a city, whose designer and maker is God.
57:160
There I exhort you to found and to build, with less money and with less toil.
57:161
那座房屋是窮人的雙手所建造的,而這才是最真實的建造;
That house the hands of the poor build up, and this is building in the truest sense;
57:162
whereas the things now being done belong to the utmost folly.
57:163
For indeed, if someone led you into the land of Persia to see the things there and then return,
57:164
and then bade you build houses there,
57:165
would you not condemn him for the utmost folly, as one bidding you spend to no purpose? How then do you do this very thing upon the earth, which a little later you will leave behind? 'But I shall leave it to my children,' he says.
57:166
然而他們也是一樣,過不多時,在你之後便要撇下它;
But they too, a little later, will leave it behind after you;
57:167
and those after them again likewise.
57:168
And here on earth the matter becomes to you an occasion of despondency, whenever you do not see your heirs holding fast the possession.
57:169
但在那另一處卻無這樣的可疑之事;
But there is nothing of the kind to suspect in that other place;
57:170
rather the possession abides unshaken, both for you and for your children and your descendants, if they imitate the same virtue.
57:171
那座房屋是基督親手動工建造的;
That building Christ Himself takes in hand;
57:172
and in building it there is no need to set overseers over the work, nor to be anxious, nor to be troubled.
57:173
When He undertakes the work, what need is there of anxiety? He gathers all together and raises up the house.
57:174
而且可驚奇的還不只此,乃在於祂照著你所喜悅的樣式建造它;
And this is not the only marvel, but that He builds it in such a way as is pleasing to you;
57:175
nay rather, even beyond what is pleasing, and beyond what you desire.
57:176
For He is the best of craftsmen, and cares exceedingly for what is to your profit.
57:177
縱使你貧窮,卻願意建造這座房屋,它也不至招來對你的嫉妒,不生出對你的惡意;
And even if you are poor and wish to build this house, it brings you no envy, nor breeds any malice against you;
57:178
因為那些懂得嫉妒的,一個也看不見它,惟有那些懂得歡喜的——就是眾天使——注視著你的美善;
for none of those who know how to envy behold it, but those who know how to rejoice—the angels—look upon your good things;
57:179
無人能挪移它的界限;
none will be able to move its boundaries;
57:180
for none who are sick with such a disease dwells near it.
57:181
You have there for neighbours the saints, those about Paul and Peter, all the prophets, the martyrs, the host of angels and archangels.
57:182
因這一切緣故,讓我們把所有的傾倒在窮人身上,好叫我們得著那些帳幕;
For all these reasons, then, let us pour out what we have upon the poor, that we may attain to those tabernacles;
57:183
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be glory, together with the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages. Amen.
