Arise, let us go hence.
77:2
我是真葡萄樹;
I am the true vine;
77:3
you are the branches, and my Father is the vinedresser.
77:4
無知使靈魂變得膽怯、懦弱;
Ignorance makes the soul timid and unmanly;
77:5
just as, on the other hand, the instruction in heavenly doctrines makes it great and lofty.
77:6
For a soul that enjoys no care is a timid thing, not by nature, but by its own choice.
77:7
因為當我看見一個勇敢的人一時膽壯、一時卻膽怯,我就不再說這種情態是屬乎本性的;
For when I see a brave man at one time daring, and now cowardly, I no longer say that this affection belongs to nature;
77:8
for the things of nature are unchangeable.
77:9
Again, when I see those who are now cowardly suddenly becoming daring, I pass the same judgment once more, ascribing the whole to free choice.
77:10
門徒也是這樣,在他們學得當學的事以先、在他們尚未被算為配得聖靈的恩賜以先,他們是極其膽怯的;
For the disciples too were exceedingly cowardly before they had learned what they ought, and before they had been counted worthy of the gift of the Spirit;
77:11
yet afterwards they became bolder than lions.
77:12
彼得原本連一個使女的恐嚇都受不住,後來卻被倒釘、被鞭打,身處千般危險中也不肯緘默;
And Peter, who could not bear the threat of a servant-girl, was hung head downwards and was scourged, and amid a thousand dangers would not keep silent;
77:13
彷彿他所受的苦如同在夢中一般,他就這樣放膽直言;
but as though suffering in a dream what he was suffering, so did he speak with boldness;
77:14
For this reason Christ said:
77:15
Arise, let us go hence.
77:16
Wherefore, tell me? Did He not know the hour at which Judas was about to come upon them? But did He fear lest, coming there, Judas should seize them, and lest before He had fulfilled His most excellent teaching the conspirators should come upon them? Away with the thought!
77:17
Far be such things from His dignity.
77:18
If, then, He was not afraid, why does He raise them up, and after fulfilling His teaching, then lead them into the garden well known to Judas? And even if Judas had come, could He not have blinded their eyes, as indeed He did when Judas was not present? For what reason, then, does He withdraw? He gives His disciples a little breathing-space.
77:19
For it was likely that they, being in a conspicuous place, would tremble and be afraid, both by reason of the time and by reason of the place.
77:20
那時正是深夜,他們甚至無法專心留意所講的話,只是不住地四下張望,並想像著那些將要臨到他們的人;
For it was the dead of night, and they could not even attend to what was being said, but were forever turning about and imagining those who were to come upon them;
77:21
and especially when the very word of the Teacher made them expect terrible things.
77:22
For 'yet a little while,' He says, 'and I am not with you,' and 'The ruler of this world is coming.'
77:23
Since, therefore, hearing these and such-like words they were troubled, as though they were on the very point of being taken, He leads them to another place, so that, thinking themselves to be in safety, they might thenceforth listen with an untroubled mind.
77:24
For indeed they were about to hear great doctrines.
77:25
Arise, let us go hence.
77:26
I am the vine, you are the branches.
77:27
What does He wish to intimate by means of the parable? That the one who does not attend to what is said cannot live, and that the signs to come proceed from the power of Christ.
77:28
My Father is the vinedresser.
77:29
What then? Does the Son stand in need of an active agency? Away with the thought!
77:30
For this illustration does not signify this.
77:31
See, then, with how great exactness He works out the parable.
77:32
For He does not say that the root enjoys the care of the vinedresser, but the branches.
77:33
But the root is here introduced for no other purpose than that they might learn that apart from His power they can do nothing, and that they ought to be so united to Him by faith as the branch is to the vine.
77:34
'Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, the Father taketh it away.'
77:35
Here He hints at the manner of life, showing that apart from works it is not possible to be in Him.
77:36
'And every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it'; that is, He causes it to enjoy much tending.
77:37
然而,根比枝子更需要照料,須被翻土鬆掘、被剝露;
And yet the root has need of tending before the branches, being dug about and laid bare;
77:38
但祂在此對這根一言不提,所講的全是關乎枝子;
but here He says nothing about this root, but everything concerns the branches;
77:39
showing that He Himself is sufficient unto Himself, while the disciples have need of much help from the Husbandman, even though they be exceedingly virtuous.
77:40
For this reason He says, 'That which beareth fruit He purgeth it.'
77:41
因為既然那枝子不結果子,它就連在葡萄樹上都無法存留;
For since it is unfruitful, it cannot even be in the vine;
77:42
but the other, since it beareth fruit, He makes yet more fruitful.
77:43
One might say that this was spoken also with a view to the afflictions then being brought upon them.
77:44
For the phrase 'He purgeth it' means 'He prunes it round about,' which is the very thing that makes the branch more fruitful.
77:45
Whence it is shown that trials rather make them the stronger.
77:46
Then, lest they should say, 'Concerning what does He speak these things?' and lest He again cast them into anxiety, He says:
77:47
'Already ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.'
77:48
Seest thou how He introduces Himself as the one tending the branches? 'For I,' saith He, 'have cleansed you.'
77:49
然而在前面祂卻表明這事是父所作的;
And yet above He shows the Father as doing this;
77:50
but there is nothing intervening between the Father and the Son.
77:51
'It remaineth henceforth that what is on your part should also be forthcoming.'
77:52
Then, to show that He did this not as needing their service, but that they might advance, He adds:
77:53
'As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, so neither can he that abideth not in me.'
77:54
For lest through cowardice they should be torn away, He braces up their soul, unstrung as it was by fear, and glues it fast to Himself, and holds out to them henceforth good hopes.
77:55
But the being taken away and cast off pertains to the branches.
77:56
Then, having urged them on from both sides, both by the good and by the grievous things, He requires first that which is on our part.
77:57
'He that abideth in me, and I in him.'
77:58
Seest thou that the Son also contributes not less than the Father to the tending of the disciples? For the Father purgeth, but He Himself holds them fast in Himself.
77:59
And the abiding in the root is what makes the branches bear fruit.
77:60
因為那未經修理、卻仍存在根裡面的,仍會結果子,縱然不如所當結的那麼多;
For that which is not purged, yet abides in the root, bears fruit, even if not so much as it ought;
77:61
but that which abides not, bears none at all.
77:62
But nevertheless both the purging was shown to be the Son's, and the abiding in the root, the Father's, who also begat the root.
77:63
你看,一切豈不都是共通的嗎——潔淨,以及享受那從根而來的能力?如今,甚麼都不能作固然是極大的損失;
Seest thou how all things are common—both the cleansing, and the enjoying of the power that comes from the root? Now indeed it is a great loss to be able to do nothing;
77:64
yet He does not stop the punishment at this point, but carries the discourse further.
77:65
祂說:「因為它被丟在外面」,不再享受栽培者的手;
'For it is cast forth,' saith He, no longer enjoying the husbandman's hand;
77:66
that is, 'If it had anything from the root, it lays it aside;'
77:67
if it had any grace, it is stripped of this, and is left desolate of the help and life that came from thence.
77:68
And what is the end? 'It is cast into the fire.'
77:69
But not such is he that abideth with Him.
77:70
Then He shows what it is to abide, and saith:
77:71
'If my words abide in you.'
77:72
Seest thou that even before this I said rightly, that He seeks the demonstration which is through works? For having said, 'Whatsoever ye shall ask I will do,' He added:
77:73
「你們若愛我,就必遵守我的命令」;
'If ye love me, keep my commandments';
77:74
and here, 'If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask whatsoever ye will, and it shall be done unto you.'
77:75
And these things He said, showing that those who plot against Him shall be burned up, while they themselves shall bear fruit.
77:76
Having therefore transferred the fear from them to those others, and having shown that they themselves shall be invincible, He saith:
77:77
'Herein is my Father glorified, that ye should be my disciples, and bear much fruit.'
77:78
From this He makes the saying worthy of belief.
77:79
For if the bearing of fruit pertains to the glory of the Father, He will not neglect His own glory.
77:80
'And ye shall be my disciples.'
77:81
Seest thou how he that beareth fruit, that one is a disciple? And what means, 'Herein is the Father glorified'? That is, He rejoices when ye abide in me, when ye bear fruit.
77:82
'As the Father hath loved me, so have I also loved you.'
77:83
從此以後,祂在此以較合乎人情的方式說話;
Here henceforth He speaks in a more human manner;
77:84
for that which is spoken as unto men has its own proper force.
77:85
因為那位甚至甘願捨命的,並且看我們——原是奴僕、是仇敵、是對頭的人——配得如此大的尊榮,又領我們上到諸天之上的,祂顯出了何等的愛的度量呢?既然如此,我若愛你們,你們就當放膽;
For He who chose even to die, and deemed us—who were slaves and enemies and adversaries—worthy of so great honour, and led us up into the heavens, what measure of love did He display? If then I love you, take courage;
77:86
if it is the Father's glory that ye bear fruit, suspect nothing evil.
77:87
Then, lest He should make them slothful, see how He again braces them up.
77:88
'Abide in my love;'
77:89
and how shall this be? 'If ye keep my commandments,' saith He, 'even as I have kept my Father's commandments.'
77:90
Again the discourse proceeds after a human manner.
77:91
For surely the Lawgiver was not going to be subject to commandments.
77:92
Is not this also here shown on account of the weakness of the hearers? For He says most things with a view to their surmising, and through all things He shows that they are in safety, and that their enemies perish, and that all which they have, they have from the Son, and that, if they display a pure manner of life, none shall ever prevail against them.
77:93
But observe Him discoursing to them with greater authority.
77:94
For He said not, 'Abide in the love of the Father,' but 'in mine.'
77:95
Then, lest they should say, 'When Thou hast set all men at war with us, then Thou leavest us and departest;'
77:96
He shows that He does not leave them, but is so glued to them, if they will, as the branch is in the vine.
77:97
And again, lest through taking courage they should become slothful, He says not that the good is unshakable, if they be negligent.
77:98
Then, lest He should refer the matter to Himself, and rather furnish occasion for their falling, He says:
77:99
'Herein is the Father glorified.'
77:100
For everywhere He shows both His own and the Father's love toward them.
77:101
The glory then is not that of the Jews, but these things which they were about to receive.
77:102
Then, lest they should say, 'We have fallen away from our ancestral heritage, we have been forsaken, we have become naked and destitute of all things;'
77:103
'I am beloved of the Father, and yet nevertheless I suffer these things that lie before me.'
77:104
It is not, then, because of any failure of love that I now abandon you.
77:105
For if I am put to death, and yet I do not take this as proof of not being loved by the Father, neither ought you to be troubled.
77:106
For if you abide in my love, none of these terrors will be able to injure you at all as regards the matter of love.
77:107
Since, therefore, love is a great thing and unconquerable, and is no mere word, let us display it through our deeds.
77:108
He reconciled us while we were enemies; let us, having become his friends, remain so.
77:109
He began; let us at least follow.
77:110
He loves not for any gain of his own (for he lacks nothing); let us love at least for what profits ourselves.
77:111
He loved us while we were enemies; let us at least love him who is our friend.
77:112
Whereas now we do the very opposite.
77:113
For every day God is blasphemed on our account, because of our rapacity, because of our covetousness.
77:114
And perhaps some one of you will say:
77:115
Every single day you discourse about covetousness.
77:116
Would that it were possible to say this every night as well!
77:117
Would that one might follow you even into the marketplace, and at your table!
77:118
Would that it were possible for wives, and friends, and children, and servants, and farmers, and neighbours, and the very ground, and the walls, continually to break forth in this cry, that so we might yield even a little!
77:119
For this disease has laid hold of the whole inhabited world, and possesses the souls of all; and great is the tyranny of mammon.
77:120
We were ransomed by Christ, and yet we are enslaved to gold.
77:121
We proclaim the sovereignty of one Master, yet obey another.
77:122
And whatever it commands, we obey with eagerness; and kindred, and friendship, and nature, and laws, and all things we have disregarded for its sake.
77:123
No one looks up to heaven; no one considers the things to come.
77:124
But there will come a time when there will be no more profit even in these words.
77:125
因為經上說:「在陰間有誰能稱謝你呢?」金子固然可羨慕,給我們帶來許多享受,也使我們得人尊重;
For in Hades, it says, who shall confess to you? Gold is desirable, and affords us much luxury, and makes us honoured;
77:126
yet not in the way that heaven does.
77:127
因為許多人厭棄富人,也憎惡他;
For many turn away from the rich man and hate him;
77:128
but the man who lives in virtue they reverence and honour.
77:129
But the poor man is laughed to scorn, even if he be virtuous, one says.
77:130
然而譏笑他的並非真正的人,乃是那些無理性的畜類;
But not by men, rather by the irrational creatures;
77:131
wherefore one ought not even to take heed of it.
77:132
For if asses were braying and jackdaws screeching, while all the wise, forsaking this spectacle, gave their praise, we would not look to the cries of the irrational creatures.
77:133
For indeed those who admire present things are like jackdaws, and worse than asses.
77:134
既然如此,若有一位地上的君王賞識你,縱然眾人都譏笑你,你也毫不介意;
Then, if an earthly king admires you, you make no account of the multitude, even though they all laugh you to scorn;
77:135
but if the Master of all praises you, do you seek the applause of beetles and gnats? For such are these before God—nay, not even that, but something meaner than these.
77:136
我們還要在污泥中打滾到幾時呢?我們還要立那些愚鈍貪食的人作我們的觀眾到幾時呢?這等人固然能好好評斷賭徒與醉漢;
How long shall we wallow in the mire? How long shall we set up as our spectators the dull-witted and the gluttonous? These can indeed appraise well the gamblers and the drunkards;
77:137
but of virtue and vice they cannot form even a dream.
77:138
如此看來,若有人譏笑你不懂得如何疏通污水溝渠,你必不以為是甚麼可恥的事,反倒要嘲笑那以此無知來指責你的人;
Then, if someone mocks you because you do not know how to draw off the channels of the sewers, you will think it no terrible thing, but will even laugh at him who casts up this inexperience against you;
77:139
yet when you wish to practise virtue, do you set up as judges of these matters those who know nothing of it? For this reason we never attain to that art.
77:140
For we entrust our affairs not to the experienced, but to the ignorant.
77:141
And these judge not according to the principle of the art, but according to their own ignorance.
77:142
所以我懇求你們,讓我們輕看那大多數人;
Wherefore, I entreat you, let us despise the many;
77:143
or rather, let us not even desire praises, nor money, nor wealth, nor account poverty as anything evil.
77:144
For poverty is to us a teacher of prudence, and of endurance, and of all philosophy.
77:145
拉撒路也曾與貧窮同住,卻得了冠冕;
Since Lazarus too lived with poverty, and was crowned;
77:146
雅各也曾只求得著餅食;
and Jacob desired to obtain bread alone;
77:147
and Joseph was in the uttermost poverty, and was not merely a slave, but even a prisoner, and for this reason we admire him the more.
77:148
我們稱讚他,不是在他分派糧食的時候,倒是在他被囚在監牢的時候;
And we praise him not so much when he distributed the corn, as when he dwelt in the prison;
77:149
不是在他頭戴冠冕的時候,乃是在他身繫鎖鏈的時候;
not when he wore the diadem, but when he wore the chain;
77:150
not when he sat upon the throne, but when he was plotted against and was sold.
77:151
所以,讓我們思想這一切,並思想那從這些爭戰中編成的冠冕,就不要欽羨財富、尊榮、享樂與權勢;
Considering, therefore, all these things, and the crowns woven from these conflicts, let us admire not wealth, and honour, and luxuries, and power;
77:152
but poverty, and the chain, and bonds, and the endurance that is for virtue's sake.
77:153
因為那些事的結局充滿了喧擾與紛亂,並且只歸於今生;
For the end of those things is full of tumult and confusion, and is allotted to the present life;
77:154
而這些事的果子卻是天堂,以及諸天之上的美善,就是眼睛未曾看見、耳朵未曾聽見的;
but the fruit of these is heaven and the good things that are in the heavens, which neither eye has seen, nor ear has heard;
77:155
which may it be granted us all to obtain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.
