'I have manifested Thy name unto the men whom Thou gavest Me out of the world.'
82:2
'Thine they were, and Thou gavest them to Me, and they have kept Thy word.'
82:3
The Son of God is called the Angel of Great Counsel, both on account of the other things which He taught, and chiefly because He proclaimed the Father unto men.
82:4
'I have manifested Thy name unto the men.'
82:5
For having said, 'I have finished Thy work,' He again explains it, telling what manner of work it was.
82:6
And yet the name was well known.
82:7
'Ye shall fear the Lord the true God.'
82:8
But what I have often said, this also I now say, that even though it was known, yet it was so only to the Jews, and not even to all of these.
82:9
But now He speaks concerning the Gentiles.
82:10
And He signifies not this only, but also that they came to know Him as Father.
82:11
But it is not the same thing to learn that He is Creator, and that He hath a Son.
82:12
And He manifested His name both by words and by deeds.
82:13
'Whom Thou gavest Me out of the world.'
82:14
'No man cometh unto Me, except it be given him;'
82:15
and, 'Except My Father draw him;'
82:16
so also here, 'Whom Thou gavest Me.'
82:17
And yet He Himself saith that He is the Way.
82:18
Whence it is clear that by what He hath said He here establishes two things: both that He is not opposed to the Father, and that it is the Father's will that they should believe on the Son.
82:19
'Thine they were, and Thou gavest them to Me.'
82:20
Here He would teach that He is greatly loved by the Father.
82:21
Since that He needed not to receive them is clear from this:
82:22
He Himself both made them, and He Himself provideth for them continually.
82:23
How then did He receive them? But, as I said, this shows His concord with the Father.
82:24
But if any should choose to examine this in a human fashion, and as it hath been said, then they will no longer belong to the Father.
82:25
因為若在父擁有他們的時候,子並不擁有他們,那麼顯然,當父把他們賜給子時,父自己就撤去了對他們的主權;
For if, when the Father had them, the Son had them not, it is plain that when He gave them to the Son, He Himself withdrew from His lordship over them;
82:26
如此一來,他們豈不成了:在父那裡時尚是不完全的;
for they would be found, while they were with the Father, to have been imperfect;
82:27
but when they came to the Son, then becoming perfect.
82:28
But these things are ridiculous even to utter.
82:29
Τί οὖν.
What then does He signify by this? That to Him also it seemed good that they should believe on the Son.
82:30
'And they have kept Thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever Thou hast given Me are from Thee.'
82:31
How have they kept Thy word? By believing on Me, and not giving heed to the Jews.
82:32
For 'he that believeth on Him,' He saith, 'hath set his seal that God is true.'
82:33
For some indeed say that, 'Now I have known that all things whatsoever Thou hast given Me are from Thee;'
82:34
but this could have no reason in it.
82:35
For how was the Son to be ignorant of the things of the Father? But it is spoken concerning the disciples.
82:36
'For from the time that I spake these things to them,' He saith, 'they learned that all things whatsoever Thou hast given Me are from Thee;'
82:37
nothing alien, nothing that is Mine as apart from Thee.
82:38
For 'one's own' He often uses as opposed to 'another's.'
82:39
They knew therefore that all things whatsoever I teach are Thine, both teachings and doctrines.
82:40
And whence did they learn it? From My words.
82:41
And not this only, but also that 'I came forth from Thee;'
82:42
for this He was ever earnest to establish throughout the Gospel.
82:43
What sayest Thou? Dost Thou teach as though the Father were ignorant? Dost Thou converse as with a man that knoweth not? What then does this distinction mean? Seest thou that the prayer is made for no other cause, but that they may learn the love which He hath toward them? For He who not only bestowed what was His own, but also called upon Another to this end, shows the greater longing.
82:44
What then is, 'I pray concerning these'? 'Not for the whole world,' He saith, 'but for those whom Thou hast given Me.'
82:45
Continually He sets down the word 'Thou gavest,' that they may learn that this seemeth good to the Father.
82:46
Then, since He had continually said, 'They are Thine, and Thou gavest them to Me,' to remove the wicked suspicion, lest any should think that His origin was recent, and that He had but now received them, what saith He? 'All Mine are Thine, and Thine are Mine, and I have been glorified in them.'
82:47
你看見這同等的尊榮嗎?因為祂恐怕你聽見「你賜給我」,就以為他們與父的權柄相隔絕,或在此以前與子的權柄相隔絕,便藉著祂所說的話除去了這兩種臆測;
Seest thou the equality of honour? For lest, hearing 'Thou gavest Me,' thou shouldest think that they were alienated from the Father's authority, or before this from the Son's, He removed both suppositions by saying what He said;
82:48
如此,你聽見「你將他們賜給了我」,就不至於以為他們與父無份(因為凡是我的都是祂的);
so that neither, hearing, 'Thou gavest them to Me,' shouldest thou think that they were alien to the Father (for what is Mine is His);
82:49
你聽見「他們本是你的」,也不至於以為他們與我無份;
nor, hearing, 'They were Thine,' shouldest thou think them alien to Me;
82:50
so that the word 'Thou gavest' is spoken only for condescension's sake.
82:51
因為凡父所有的,都是子的;
For whatsoever the Father hath, is the Son's;
82:52
and whatsoever the Son hath, is the Father's.
82:53
But this cannot be said even of a son after the human manner, but only because He is of a greater.
82:54
因為屬乎那較小者的也屬乎那較大者,這是人人都約略明白的;
For that what belongs to the lesser belongs also to the greater, this is somehow clear to all;
82:55
but here He reverses it, and this reversal shows the equality.
82:56
This also He showed elsewhere when He said:
82:57
「凡父所有的,都是我的」,這是就認識而言的;
'All things that the Father hath are Mine,' speaking concerning knowledge;
82:58
but the words 'Thou gavest Me,' and all such expressions, are that He may show that He did not draw them to Himself as a stranger coming in, but received His own.
82:59
Then He sets down the cause and the proof, saying:
82:60
'And I have been glorified in them;'
82:61
that is to say, either that I have authority over them, or that they will glorify Me, believing on Thee and on Me, and will glorify us alike.
82:62
But if He hath not been glorified in them alike, then what is His is no longer the other's.
82:63
For no one is glorified in that over which he hath no authority.
82:64
祂又是怎樣同樣得了榮耀呢?他們眾人都照樣為祂捨命,正如為父捨命一樣,並且傳揚祂,正如傳揚父一樣;
But how hath He been glorified alike? They all alike die for Him, as also for the Father, and preach Him, even as they preach the Father;
82:65
and just as they say that all things come to pass in His name, so also in the name of the Son.
82:66
'And I am no more in the world, and these are in the world.'
82:67
That is, Even though I appear not according to the flesh, yet through these am I glorified.
82:68
But why does He repeatedly say, 'I am not in the world'?
82:69
And, 'Since I am leaving them, I commend them to Thee'?
82:70
And, 'While I was in the world, I kept them'? For if one were to take these words in a merely literal sense, many absurdities would follow.
82:71
For how could it stand to reason that He is not in the world, and that, when He departs, He entrusts them to Another? Such words would befit a mere man who was being parted from them for good.
82:72
You see that He speaks for the most part after the manner of men, and in accommodation to their understanding, since they supposed that they had some greater security from His presence. Therefore He says:
82:73
'While I was with them, I kept them.'
82:74
And yet He says, 'I come to you,' and, 'I am with you until the consummation of the age.'
82:75
How then does He now speak thus, as though about to be parted from them? But, as I said, it was in accommodation to their surmise, that they might have a little breathing space when they heard Him saying these things and commending them to the Father.
82:76
For since, though they had heard many words of comfort from Him, they were not persuaded, He now converses with the Father, showing His tender love toward them:
82:77
'Since Thou art calling me to Thyself, establish them in safety.'
82:78
What sayest Thou? Art Thou not able to keep them? Yea, I am able.
82:79
那麼你為何說這些話呢?「好叫他們心裡充滿我的喜樂」;
Why then dost Thou say these things? 'That they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves';
82:80
that is, that they be not troubled, being as yet somewhat imperfect.
82:81
祂說這些話時,顯明祂如此說這一切,乃是為了他們的安息與喜樂;
In saying these things He made it plain that it was for the sake of their repose and joy that He spoke all this in this manner;
82:82
since otherwise the saying would seem to be contradictory:
82:83
'And now I am no longer in the world, and these are in the world.'
82:84
For this was what they suspected.
82:85
So for the time being He condescends to them.
82:86
因為祂若說「我保守他們」,他們就不會這樣輕易相信;
For had He said, 'I keep them,' they would not so readily have believed;
82:87
「聖父啊,求你因你的名保守他們」;
'Holy Father, keep them in Thy name';
82:88
that is, By Thy help.
82:89
「我還在世上的時候,我因你的名保守了他們。」祂又是以人、並以先知的身分說話;
'While I was in the world, I kept them in Thy name.' Again He speaks as a man and as a prophet;
82:90
since nowhere does He appear to have done anything in the name of God.
82:91
'Those whom Thou gavest me I guarded, and none of them perished except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.'
82:92
And yet not he alone perished, but many others afterward as well.
82:93
那麼祂怎麼說「我斷不至於失落」呢?意思是「凡屬我這一分的,我斷不至於失落」;
How then does He say, 'I shall in no wise lose'? 'That which is My part, I shall in no wise lose';
82:94
which elsewhere too He declared more clearly, saying:
82:95
'not through any fault of mine, nor because I thrust them away, nor because I forsook them.'
82:96
But if of their own accord they leap away, I do not drag them by constraint. 'And now I come to Thee.'
82:97
You see that the discourse is framed in a more human fashion? So that if anyone should wish to lessen the Son on the ground of these words, he will be lessening the Father also.
82:98
你且從起頭觀察:其中有些是以教導和向父說明的方式,有些則是以請求囑託的方式;
Observe then from the beginning: part of it is by way of teaching and explaining to Him, and part by way of enjoining;
82:99
some by way of teaching, as when He says:
82:100
「我不為世人祈求」;
'I pray not for the world';
82:101
「我保守他們直到如今,沒有一個滅亡的」;
'I have kept them until now, and none has perished';
82:102
又說「所以求你保守他們」;
and, 'Do Thou therefore keep them,' He says;
82:103
「他們本是你的,你將他們賜給了我」;
'They were Thine, and Thou gavest them to me';
82:104
and, 'While I was in the world, I kept them.'
82:105
But the solution of all is this: that the things spoken were said in accommodation to their weakness.
82:106
And having said, 'None of them perished except the son of perdition,' He added:
82:107
What Scripture does He mean? That which foretold many things concerning Him.
82:108
Not, however, that he perished on this account, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
82:109
And concerning this we have discoursed much before, that this is a manner peculiar to Scripture, in that it sets down as a cause the things that come to pass as a result.
82:110
人必須凡事精確察考——說話者的方式、所論的主題、以及經文的規則——若我們不願被引入謬誤的話;
And one must examine everything with exactness—the manner of the speaker, the subject-matter, and the laws of Scripture—if indeed we are not to be led into error;
82:111
'For, brethren, be not children in understanding.'
82:112
And this we ought to read not only for the understanding of the Scriptures, but also for earnestness in the conduct of life.
82:113
For little children too do not long for great things, but are wont to admire things of no worth.
82:114
他們喜歡觀看那些用泥土做成的車輛、馬匹、趕騾人和輪子;
For they delight to look at carriages, and horses, and the muleteer, and the wheels, all made of clay;
82:115
but if they should see a king seated on a golden chariot, and a pair of white mules, and great splendor, they do not even turn to look.
82:116
還有那用同樣泥料做成的新娘偶像,他們也拿來裝扮打扮;
And brides again, made from the same material, they take and deck out;
82:117
但那真正實在、容光煥發的新娘,他們卻連認也不認識;
but the truly real and radiant ones they do not even recognize;
82:118
and in many other cases they experience the same thing.
82:119
This many even of grown men now endure.
82:120
因為當他們聽見天上的事時,竟毫不留意;
For when they hear of the things of heaven, they pay no heed;
82:121
然而對一切泥土之物,他們卻像孩童一樣狂熱,對那從地而來的財富驚嘆不已,並看重今生的榮耀與享樂;
but toward all things of clay they are, like the children, agog, and they stand agape at the wealth that comes from the earth, and they prize glory and luxury in the present life;
82:122
其實這些不過是像那些一樣的孩童玩物;
and yet these things are but children's playthings, just as those were;
82:123
whereas the others are the causes of life and glory and repose.
82:124
然而正如孩童被奪去這些玩具便哭泣,卻連渴慕那更大之物的心都不曉得存有;
But just as the children weep when deprived of these toys, yet know not even to feel a desire for those greater things;
82:125
so also is it with many of those who are reputed to be men.
82:126
'Be not children in understanding.'
82:127
請告訴我,你愛財富,卻不愛那長存的財寶,反倒愛孩童的玩物嗎?那麼,你若看見有人稀奇一枚鉛做的錢幣,並俯身去拾取它,你必因他的極度貧乏而定他的罪;
Thou lovest riches, tell me, and lovest not the wealth that abides, but children's baubles? Then, if thou shouldest see someone marveling at a coin of lead, and stooping down to pick it up, thou wilt condemn him for his great poverty;
82:128
yet thou, who gatherest things more paltry than these, dost thou reckon thyself among the wealthy? And how could this stand to reason? For we shall call him rich who despises all present things.
82:129
For no one, no one of these little ones, will choose to laugh to scorn silver and gold and the rest of the show, unless he has a longing for the greater things—just as neither will one scorn the coin of lead unless he possesses coins of gold.
82:130
And thou likewise, whenever thou seest a man passing by all the world, believe that he does this from no other cause than from looking to a greater world.
82:131
So too the husbandman despises the few ears of wheat, when he looks for a greater harvest.
82:132
但我們若在盼望尚不確定的時候,尚且藐視眼前之物;
But if, while the hope is uncertain, we despise the things at hand;
82:133
much more ought we to do this in the case of a sure expectation.
82:134
Wherefore I beseech and exhort you, do not injure yourselves, nor, by clinging to mire, rob yourselves of the treasures above, bringing your ship into harbor laden with stubble and chaff.
82:135
任憑人怎樣議論我們,任憑他因這不斷的勸勉而心生厭煩;
Let anyone say of us what he will, let him be vexed at the constancy of the exhortation;
82:136
任憑他稱我們為多嘴的、令人生厭的、叫人受累的;
let him call us babblers, tiresome, burdensome;
82:137
we shall not cease from exhorting continually on their behalf, and continually sounding forth to you all that word of the prophet:
82:138
Redeem your sins by almsgiving, and your iniquities by mercy to the poor, and bind them about your neck.
82:139
Do not do this today only to fall away tomorrow.
82:140
For this body too requires daily nourishment.
82:141
So also does the soul—and far more than the body.
82:142
And if it receives none, it grows weaker and more disgraceful.
82:143
Let us not, then, look on while it perishes and is strangled.
82:144
It receives many wounds each day—by lusting, by growing angry, by sloth, by reviling, by seeking revenge, by envying.
82:145
It is necessary, therefore, to prepare remedies for it as well.
82:146
And no small remedy is that of almsgiving, which can be applied to every wound.
82:147
For 'Give alms,' He says, 'and behold, all things are clean unto you'—
82:148
是施捨,而非出於貪婪所得的;
alms, that is, not what comes of greed;
82:149
for what comes of covetousness does not endure, even if you give it to the needy.
82:150
For almsgiving is that which is free from all injustice.
82:151
This is better than both fasting and sleeping on the ground.
82:152
雖然那些操練更為艱辛勞苦,然而這一樣卻更有益處;
And though those practices are more laborious and toilsome, yet this one is more profitable;
82:153
it enlightens the soul, makes it rich, and renders it fair and comely.
82:154
The fruit of the olive does not so sustain athletes as this oil restores the contenders of godliness.
82:155
Let us then anoint our hands, that we may nobly rise up against our adversary.
82:156
He who practices mercy toward the needy will quickly desist from covetousness as well. He who continues in giving to the poor will quickly desist from anger too, and will never think highly of himself.
82:157
For just as a physician who continually tends the wounded is easily kept humble, beholding in the calamities of others the frailty of human nature,
82:158
so too, if we enter into the succor of the poor, we shall easily grow wise in spirit, and shall not marvel at wealth, nor deem present things to be anything great, but shall despise all things; and being lifted up toward heaven, we shall easily attain the eternal good things, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory to the Father, unto the ages of ages.
