The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them:
53:2
'Why have you not brought Him?' The officers then answered:
53:3
'Never did a man speak thus, as this man speaks.' [Section 1]
53:4
只要我們不存詭詐之心,就沒有什麼比真理更清楚、更單純的了;
Nothing is clearer than the truth, nothing simpler, if only we do not deal deceitfully;
53:5
just as, for those who do deal deceitfully, nothing is more perplexing.
53:6
看哪:法利賽人和文士,這些自以為更有智慧的人,為了謀害基督常與祂在一起,又親眼看見祂的神蹟,又誦讀聖經,卻毫無得益,反倒受了虧損;
For behold: the Pharisees and the scribes, who forsooth seemed to be wiser, being always in Christ's company for the sake of plotting against Him, both seeing His miracles and reading the Scriptures, profited nothing, but were even harmed;
53:7
whereas the officers, having none of these advantages, were won over by a single discourse, and having gone forth to bind Him, returned themselves bound by the wonder of it.
53:8
我們所當稀奇的,不僅是他們的悟性——他們不需要神蹟,只因那教訓就被折服了(因為他們並沒有說「從來沒有人這樣行神蹟」);
And one may marvel not only at their understanding—that they needed no signs, but were captured by the teaching alone (for they did not say, 'Never did a man work miracles thus');
53:9
but what did they say? 'Never did a man speak thus'—
53:10
so then, one may marvel not only at their understanding, but also at their boldness, that they said these things to those who had sent them, to the Pharisees, to those who warred against Him and did everything for this end.
53:11
'For the officers came,' it says, 'and the Pharisees say to them:
53:12
Why have you not brought Him?' Now their coming was far greater than their remaining behind.
53:13
因為那樣的話,他們固然可以擺脫這些人的糾纏;
For then, indeed, they would have been rid of the vexatiousness of these men;
53:14
但如今他們卻成了基督智慧的傳報者,並且更大地顯出他們的膽量;
but as it is, they become heralds of Christ's wisdom, and display their boldness in a greater degree;
53:15
他們也沒有說「我們因群眾之故不能動手,因為眾人都把祂當作先知看待」;
and they do not say, 'We could not because of the crowd, for they attended to Him as to a prophet';
53:16
but what? 'Never did a man speak thus.'
53:17
其實他們本可以拿那個藉口來搪塞的;
And yet they could have offered that excuse;
53:18
but they make manifest their own right judgment.
53:19
For this was the mark not merely of those who admired Him, but also of those who accused these men, in that they had sent to bind Him whom they ought rather to have heard.
53:20
And yet they had not even heard a long discourse, but a brief one.
53:21
For when the understanding is unbribed, there is no need even of long words.
53:22
What, then, do the Pharisees do? When they ought to have been pricked in conscience, they do the very opposite: they turn the accusation back upon the officers, saying, 'Are you also led astray?'
53:23
他們仍舊奉承這些人,並不用嚴厲壓制的口氣說話,唯恐他們與自己完全決裂;
They still flatter them, and do not employ their speech in a crushing manner, fearing lest they should be utterly severed from them;
53:24
yet they betray their anger, and speak with a certain restraint.
53:25
他們本應詢問祂說了什麼,並為所說的話而稱奇,但這一點他們卻不肯做;
For when they ought to have asked what He had said, and to have marveled at His words, this they do not do;
53:26
for they knew that they would be caught.
53:27
Instead, they draw their conclusion against the officers from an exceedingly senseless proof.
53:28
'For why,' says he, 'has none of the rulers believed in Him?' Is it Christ, then, tell me, whom you accuse by this, and not those who have refused to believe? 'But this crowd,' he says, 'which does not know the Law, they are accursed.'
53:29
But this is the greater charge against you: that the crowd believed, while you refused to believe.
53:30
其實,正是那些百姓在行那些明白律法之人所當行的事;
And indeed, it was those very people who were doing the works of those who know the Law;
53:31
那麼他們怎會是被咒詛的呢?被咒詛的乃是你們,就是那些不遵守律法的人;
how then are they accursed? For you are the accursed ones, who do not keep the Law;
53:32
not they, who obey the Law.
53:33
But it was not right to slander the One who is disbelieved on the ground of those who disbelieve.
53:34
For this is not a sound manner of reasoning.
53:35
Since you also disbelieved God, as Paul says:
53:36
'For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faithfulness of God of no effect? God forbid.'
53:37
For the prophets also were ever accusing them, saying:
53:38
'Hear, you rulers of Sodom;'
53:39
and, 'Your rulers are disobedient;'
53:40
and again, 'Is it not for you to know judgment?' And
53:41
everywhere they set upon them more vehemently.
53:42
What then? Will anyone on this account bring a charge against God? Away with the thought!
53:43
For this accusation belongs to those men themselves.
53:44
And what other sign could one give that you do not know the Law, than your not obeying it? But since they had said, 'Has any of the rulers believed in Him?' and, 'Those who do not know the Law,' Nicodemus fittingly takes hold of them, speaking thus:
53:45
'Does our Law judge a man, unless it first hears from him?' For he shows that they neither know the Law nor keep the Law.
53:46
For if the Law commands no one to put a man to death without first hearing him, but these men rushed to this before hearing, they are transgressors of the Law.
53:47
And since they had said, 'And none of the rulers has believed in Him,' on this account the Evangelist notes that he was one of them, showing that rulers too had believed in Him.
53:48
因為他們還未顯出應有的膽量;
For they did not yet display the boldness that was fitting;
53:49
but observe how even with restraint he brings his rebuke.
53:50
For he did not say, 'But you wish to kill Him, and you simply condemn the man as a deceiver.'
53:51
He did not speak thus, but more gently, checking their unspeakable impulse, and their thoughtlessness and murderous intent.
53:52
For this reason he turns his discourse to the Law, saying:
53:53
'Unless it hear accurately, and know what one is doing.'
53:54
So that there is need not of a bare hearing, but of an accurate one.
53:55
For this is the meaning of 'And know what he is doing'—what he intends, and why, and to what end; whether it be for the overthrow of the commonwealth and as an enemy.
53:56
Being thus at a loss, since they had said, 'None of the rulers has believed in Him,' they dealt with him neither vehemently nor with restraint.
53:57
For what consistency has it, tell me, when he had said, 'Our Law judges no one,' for them to say, 'Are you also of Galilee?' For instead of showing that they had not sent to summon Him without judgment, or that there was no need to grant Him a hearing, they employed their rejoinder in a more boorish and passionate manner:
53:58
'Search and see, that out of Galilee no prophet has arisen.'
53:59
For what had the man said? That He is a prophet? He had said that one ought not to be put to death without judgment.
53:60
他們卻帶著侮辱,彷彿他對聖經一無所知似的,加上這些話;
But they, insultingly, as though he knew nothing about the Scriptures, added these words;
53:61
for this is what 'Search and see' means.
53:62
What then does Christ do? Since they kept turning Galilee and the prophet over and over, He, freeing all from this misplaced suspicion, and showing that He is not one of the prophets, but the Master of the world, says:
53:63
Not of Galilee, not of Palestine, nor of Judea.
53:64
What then do the Jews say? 'You bear witness concerning Yourself; Your witness is not true.'
53:65
He referred them again and again to the Scriptures, and they say, 'You bear witness concerning Yourself.'
53:66
And what had He witnessed? 'I am the light of the world.'
53:67
這話是何等偉大,實在是偉大的;
Great was the saying, and truly great;
53:68
yet it did not strike them very hard, since He did not now make Himself equal to the Father, nor did He say that He was His Son, nor God, but for the present only light.
53:69
於是他們連這話也想要推翻;
They wished, then, to overturn this also;
53:70
其實這話遠比「跟從我的,就不在黑暗裡走」更為重大,因祂是就屬靈的意義而論光與黑暗;
and yet this was far greater than to say, 'He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness,' speaking of light and darkness in a spiritual sense;
53:71
that is, he does not remain in error.
53:72
Here He draws Nicodemus along and encourages him, as one who had spoken with much boldness, and He praises the officers who had done this.
53:73
因為那大聲呼喊,正是出於一位想要把道理講明的人,好叫連那些人也能聽見;
For the very crying aloud belongs to one who wishes to establish his point, so that even those men might hear;
53:74
同時祂也暗暗地影射那些暗中編織詭計、身處黑暗與迷誤之中的人;
and at the same time He also secretly hints at those very men who were weaving their plots in secret, and in darkness and error;
53:75
but they shall not prevail over the light.
53:76
And He reminds Nicodemus of those words which He had spoken earlier:
53:77
'Everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.'
53:78
For since they were saying that none of the rulers had believed in Him, on this account He says, 'He who does evil does not come to the light,' showing that their not coming was not due to any weakness of the light, but to their own perverted disposition.
53:79
They answered and said to Him:
53:80
'Do You bear witness concerning Yourself?' What then does He say? 'Even if I bear witness concerning Myself, My witness is true;'
53:81
'for I know where I came from and where I am going;'
53:82
'but you do not know where I came from.'
53:83
The very thing which He had said before, this they now put forward as though it had been spoken as their leading argument.
53:84
What then does Christ do? Overturning it, and showing that those earlier words were spoken with reference to them and to their suspicion—since they supposed Him to be a mere man—He says:
53:85
'Even if I bear witness concerning Myself, My witness is true, because I know where I came from.'
53:86
What is this? I am of God, and God, and the Son of God.
53:87
而神為祂自己作見證,乃是配得人信服的見證人;
And God is a witness worthy of belief unto Himself;
53:88
'You are willfully malicious,' He says, 'and though you know, you pretend not to know;'
53:89
'but you utter everything according to human reasoning, wishing to understand nothing beyond what appears.'
53:90
'You judge according to the flesh.'
53:91
正如照著肉體而活,就是指過著敗壞的生活;
Just as living according to the flesh means living wickedly;
53:92
Thus to judge according to the flesh is to judge unjustly.
53:93
'And if I judge, my judgment is true.'
53:94
What He means is something like this:
53:95
'And even if we do judge unjustly,' He says, 'why do you not bring a charge? Why do you not punish? Why do you not condemn?' 'Because I did not come for this purpose,' He says.
53:96
因為這正是「我不判斷任何人」的意思;
For this is the meaning of, 'I judge no man;'
53:97
'and yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true.'
53:98
'Since, had I willed to judge, you would have been among the condemned.'
53:99
'And these things I say, not as one judging,' He says.
53:100
But He did not say, 'I speak not as one judging,' because He lacked confidence—as though, had He judged, He could not have overcome them; for indeed, had He judged, He would justly have condemned them—
53:101
but rather because now is not the time of judgment.
53:102
And concerning the judgment to come He hinted when He said, 'For I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me.'
53:103
And here He hinted that it is not He alone who condemns them, but the Father also.
53:104
Then He veiled this, leading them on to His own testimony:
53:105
'And in your own law it is written that the testimony of two men is true.'
53:106
那麼在此處異端能說甚麼呢?倘若我們只是這樣單純地理解所說的話,祂比人又有甚麼優越之處呢?因為在人的情形中,這樣規定是有緣故的,乃因單憑一人不足取信;
What then could the heretics say here? What advantage would He have over men, if we were to take what is said in so simple a manner? For in the case of men this was ordained for this reason, because by himself no one is worthy of belief;
53:107
but in the case of God, how could this hold reason? How then is 'Two' spoken? Is it because they are two, or because they are men that it is therefore two? For if it is because they are two, why did He not resort to John, nor say, 'I bear witness concerning myself, and John bears witness concerning me'? Why not to the angel? Why not to the prophets? For indeed He could have found countless other testimonies.
53:108
But He does not wish to show this alone—that they are two—but that they are also of the same substance.
53:109
'Who is your Father?' Then He says:
53:110
'You neither know me, nor my Father.'
53:111
For since, knowing, they spoke as though not knowing, and as tempting Him, He does not deem them worthy even of an answer.
53:112
For this reason He henceforth speaks all things more plainly and with greater boldness, taking the testimony from the signs and from the teaching of those who followed, since the cross was near at hand.
53:113
'For I know,' He says, 'whence I come.'
53:114
單是這句話,不會使他們大為刺痛;
This alone would not have greatly stung them;
53:115
but to add, 'And where I am going,' would rather have frightened them, since He was not going to remain in death.
53:116
But why did He not say, 'I know that I am God,' but rather, 'I know whence I come'? He always mingles lowly things with lofty ones, and even these very lowly things He conceals.
53:117
For having said, 'I bear witness concerning myself,' and having shown this, He came to the lowlier matter, as though He were saying:
53:118
'I know from whom I have been sent, and to whom I am departing.'
53:119
For in this way they would have had nothing to say in reply, hearing that He was sent from Him, and departs to Him.
53:120
'For I would not have spoken any falsehood,' He says, 'coming thence and departing thither, to the true God.'
53:121
'But you do not know God;'
53:122
'therefore you judge according to the flesh.'
53:123
'For you who have heard so many proofs and refutations still say, He is not true;'
53:124
'and you deem Moses worthy of belief, both for what he says concerning others and for what he says concerning himself;'
53:125
'This is to judge according to the flesh.'
53:126
And indeed He says that 'The Father judges no man.'
53:127
How then does He say here, 'And even if I judge, my judgment is just, for I am not alone'? Again He speaks to their supposition:
53:128
that is, 'My judgment is the Father's;'
53:129
父若判斷,除了照我這樣,斷不會另有別樣的判斷;
the Father, in judging, would not judge otherwise than as I;
53:130
and I would not judge otherwise than as the Father.
53:131
但祂為何又提及父呢?因為他們認為,子若不加上父的見證,便不足為信;
But for what reason did He also make mention of the Father? Because they did not consider the Son worthy of belief unless He also took to Himself the testimony of the Father;
53:132
and otherwise, what was said does not even stand.
53:133
因為在人的情形中,當兩個人為別人的事作見證時,那見證才是真的;
For in the case of men, when two bear witness to a matter belonging to another, then the testimony is true;
53:134
因為這才叫作兩個人作見證;
for this is what it is for two to bear witness;
53:135
but if someone is going to bear witness to himself, they are no longer two.
53:136
你看見了嗎?祂說這話別無其他緣故,乃是要顯明祂與父同質,並且要藉著祂自己再次顯明祂不需要別的見證;
Do you see that He has said this for no other reason than to show that He is of the same substance, and again through Himself to show that He does not need any other testimony;
53:137
and to show that He has nothing less than the Father? Behold, then, the authority.
53:138
'I am one who bears witness concerning myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness concerning me.'
53:139
But had He been of a lesser substance, He would not have set this down.
53:140
But now, that you may not suppose that He was included merely for the sake of number, observe the authority as having nothing altered.
53:141
人作見證,是在他本身就可信的時候,而非在他需要他人見證的時候,並且是在別人的事上;
A man bears witness when he is of himself worthy of belief, not when he needs testimony, and this in a matter belonging to another;
53:142
but in his own matter, when he needs the testimony that comes from another, he is no longer worthy of belief.
53:143
But here it is entirely the opposite.
53:144
For bearing witness in His own matter, and saying that He is witnessed to by another, He declares Himself worthy of belief, showing His own authority from every side.
53:145
For why, having said, 'I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me,' and, 'The testimony of two men is true,' did He not fall silent, but added, 'I am one who bears witness concerning myself'? Clearly to make plain His authority.
53:146
And first He set down Himself:
53:147
'I am one who bears witness concerning myself.'
53:148
He shows here both the equality of honor, and that they gain nothing by saying they know God as Father, while not knowing Him.
53:149
And He says that the cause of this is their being unwilling to know Him.
53:150
He says, then, that it is not possible to know His Father apart from Him, so that even in this way He might draw them to the knowledge of Himself.
53:151
For since, letting Him go, they were always seeking to learn the Father, He says:
53:152
'You cannot know the Father apart from me.'
53:153
So that those who blaspheme the Son do not blaspheme Him alone, but also Him who begat.
53:154
Let us flee these things, and let us glorify the Son.
53:155
And yet, if He were not of the same nature, He would not have spoken thus.
53:156
因為祂若只是施教,卻是異質的,那麼人就可能在不認識祂的情形下認識父;
For if He merely taught, but were of a different substance, it would be possible to know the Father while being ignorant of Him;
53:157
and again, it would not necessarily follow that one who knew Him knew the Father.
53:158
因為認識人的,並不因此就認識天使;
For neither does one who knows a man thereby know an angel;
53:159
for indeed one who knows the creation knows God.
53:160
因為認識受造之物的人有許多;
For there are many who know the creation;
53:161
or rather all men (for they behold it), and yet they do not know God.
53:162
Let us therefore glorify the Son of God, not by this glory alone, but also by that which comes through our works.
53:163
For this glory apart from that is nothing.
53:164
Behold, he says, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast in God.
53:165
Thou therefore who teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that gloriest in the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? Take heed lest we too, glorying in the rightness of our faith, dishonour God by displaying a life that does not accord with the faith, and cause Him to be blasphemed.
53:166
For He wills that the Christian be a teacher of the world, and leaven, and light, and salt.
53:167
And what is the light? A shining life, having nothing darkened.
53:168
The light is not profitable to itself, neither the salt, nor the leaven; but they display their usefulness towards others.
53:169
So too we are required to render not only our own profit, but that of others also.
53:170
For if the salt do not season, it is no longer salt.
53:171
這還顯明另一件事,就是我們自己若行得正,別人也必定隨之而行;
And it shows yet another thing also: that if we ourselves succeed rightly, others too will assuredly do so;
53:172
but so long as we ourselves do not succeed rightly, neither shall we be able to profit others.
53:173
Let there be nothing foolish, nothing frivolous in us.
53:174
因為世上的事都是這樣;
For such are the affairs of this world;
53:175
such are the cares of this life.
53:176
為這緣故,那些童女被稱為愚拙的,因為她們專注於愚拙的事,就是世上的事;
For this reason the virgins were called foolish, because they busied themselves about foolish things, the affairs of this world;
53:177
gathering here, where they ought not, and not laying up there.
53:178
所以我們也當懼怕,恐怕遭受同樣的事;
There is fear then lest we too suffer the same thing;
53:179
fear lest we too depart clothed in filthy garments, to that place where all have bright and glorious ones.
53:180
Nothing is more filthy, nothing more unclean than this.
53:181
Wherefore the Prophet, interpreting its nature, cried aloud:
53:182
My wounds stink and are corrupt.
53:183
And if thou wouldest learn the foul stench of sin, consider it after it is done, when thou art rid of the desire, when the fire no longer troubles thee; and then thou shalt see what sin is.
53:184
當你心中平靜的時候,思想那怒氣;
Consider anger, when thou art in calm;
53:185
consider covetousness, when thou art outside the passion.
53:186
Nothing is more shameful, nothing more foul than rapine and covetousness.
53:187
These things we say continually, not desiring to trouble you, but that we may gain something great and wonderful.
53:188
因為那頭一次聽了不肯改正的人,或許聽第二次就照著行了;
For he who does not amend at the first hearing, will perhaps do so from hearing it a second time;
53:189
and he who passed it by the second time, will be set right from the third.
53:190
And may it be granted that all of us, being delivered from all wicked things, may have the sweet savour of Christ; for to Him is the glory, with the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
