'Lord, where goest thou?' Jesus answered him:
74:2
「我所去的地方,你現在不能跟我去;
'Whither I go, thou canst not now follow me;
74:3
but afterward thou shalt follow me.'
74:4
它比火更為熾烈,直上升到諸天之上;
it is more vehement than fire, and it mounts up to heaven itself;
74:5
and there is no hindrance able to check its impetuous onrush.
74:6
At any rate the most ardent Peter, when he heard, 'Whither I go, ye cannot come,' what does he say? 'Lord, where goest thou?' And this he said, not so much from a wish to learn, as from a desire to follow.
74:7
那麼,公開地說「我要去」,他這時還不敢;
Openly, then, to say 'I am coming' he did not yet dare;
74:8
but he says, 'Where goest thou?' Yet Christ answered, not to his words, but to his mind.
74:9
For that this was what he desired is plain from what Christ said.
74:10
For what does he say? 'Whither I go, thou canst not now follow me.'
74:11
你看見他何等切望要跟隨,並且為此發問麼?但他聽見「你後來要跟隨」,就是這樣也仍按捺不住他的渴慕;
Seest thou that he longed to follow, and for this reason asked? But when he heard, 'Thou shalt follow afterward,' not even so could he restrain his longing;
74:12
and though he had received good hopes, yet he is so pressed on as to say, 'Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.'
74:13
For since he had shaken off the reproach of the betrayal, and had shown himself also to be among the genuine ones, henceforth with boldness he asks of his own accord, while the others kept silence.
74:14
「彼得啊,你說什麼呢?祂說:你不能;
'What sayest thou, Peter? He said, Thou canst not;
74:15
and thou sayest, I can? Then thou shalt know by experience itself that thy love is nothing, unless the help from above be present.'
74:16
Whence it is plain that even that fall he permitted out of care for him.
74:17
因為祂原本也想藉著先前的話語來教導他;
For he wished indeed to instruct him even by the former words;
74:18
but since he persisted in his vehemence, He did not Himself cast him down, nor thrust him into the denial, but left him bereft, that he might learn his own weakness.
74:19
He said that he must be delivered up, and he says:
74:20
他受了責備,卻仍未被糾正;
He was rebuked, yet he was not corrected;
74:21
but again, when Christ wished to wash his feet, he says:
74:22
'Thou shalt never wash my feet.'
74:23
Hearing again, 'Thou canst not now follow me,' he says:
74:24
'Though all shall deny thee, I will not deny thee.'
74:25
Since then it was likely that he would be lifted up even to arrogance, being intent on gainsaying Him, He henceforth teaches him not to resist.
74:26
This, at any rate, Luke also hinting at, says that He declared, 'And I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not;'
74:27
就是說,叫你不至於徹底沉淪;
that is, that thou mayest not utterly perish;
74:28
throughout all teaching him humility, and reproving human nature as being nothing of itself by itself.
74:29
因為他那極大的愛心使他好爭辯,主此後便使他清醒自制,好叫他日後領受了普世的職事之時,不再落入這樣的境地;
For since his great love had made him contentious, He henceforth brings him to soberness, that he may not suffer this also in the times thereafter, when he shall have taken up the stewardship of the world;
74:30
ἀλλ'.
but that, remembering what he suffered, he may come to know himself.
74:31
And behold the vehemence of the fall.
74:32
因為他不是一兩次落入這事,而是這樣地失了常態,以致在短短的時間內三次說出那不認的話;
For not once and twice did he suffer this, but he was so beside himself as to utter the word of denial three times in a short space of time;
74:33
that he might learn that he had not loved so much as he had been loved.
74:34
Yet nevertheless, to him who had thus fallen He says again:
74:35
'Lovest thou me more than these?' Thus it came about not from coldness, but from being stripped of the help from above.
74:36
The love of Peter, then, He accepts, but the contentiousness born of it He cuts away.
74:37
For if thou lovest, thou oughtest to obey the beloved.
74:38
祂對你、也對與你同在的人說了:「你們不能」;
He said both to thee and to those with thee, 'Ye cannot;'
74:39
你為何爭競呢?你豈不知道神的禁止是何等的事麼?既然你在這事上不肯學會我所說的必不能不成就,你就要在那不認的事上親身學會;
why art thou contentious? Knowest thou not what the forbidding of God is? But since in this thou wilt not learn that what I say cannot but come to pass, thou shalt learn it in the denial itself;
74:40
and yet this then appeared to thee far more incredible.
74:41
因為這一件事你連知道都不知道;
For this thou didst not even know;
74:42
而那另一件事,你心裡卻是有所知曉的;
but of that thou hadst the knowledge in thy soul;
74:43
yet nevertheless there came to pass what had not even been expected.
74:44
'I will lay down my life for thee.'
74:45
For since he had heard that no one has greater love than this, he leaped forward at once, being insatiable and desiring to reach the very heights.
74:46
But Christ, showing that to promise these things with authority belongs to Him alone, says:
74:47
因為那間隔也並不長;
For the interval was not long either;
74:48
for it was in the dead of night that He was conversing with them, and the first and second watch had already passed.
74:49
'Let not your heart be troubled.'
74:50
He says this because it was likely that, on hearing what He had said, they would be troubled.
74:51
For if the chief of them, who was so fervent, heard that before the cock crowed he would deny Him thrice,
74:52
it was likely that they expected to undergo some great calamity, one sufficient to overturn even adamantine souls.
74:53
因此,他們既這樣思想,很可能會驚慌失措,你且看祂如何安慰他們,說:「你們心裡不要憂愁」;
Since, then, it was likely that as they reasoned thus they would even be beside themselves, see how He consoles them, saying, 'Let not your heart be troubled';
74:54
by this first showing forth the power of His Godhead, in that He knows the things they held within their soul and brings them into the open.
74:55
「你們信神,也當信我」;
'Ye believe in God, believe also in Me';
74:56
that is, all these terrors shall pass away.
74:57
For faith in Me and in Him that begat Me is mightier than the things that assail you, and will suffer none of these hardships to prevail.
74:58
'In My Father's house are many mansions.'
74:59
Just as He consoled Peter in his distress, saying,
74:60
so also to these He intimates this same hope.
74:61
For lest they should suppose that the promise had been given to him alone, He says,
74:62
'In My Father's house are many mansions.'
74:63
「若是不然,我就早已告訴你們了,我去原是為你們預備地方」;
'If it were not so, I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you';
74:64
that is, the same region that shall receive Peter shall receive you also.
74:65
For there is there great abundance of dwellings, and one cannot say that it stands in need of any preparing.
74:66
For since He had said, 'Ye cannot follow Me now,' lest they should think they were utterly cut off, He added,
74:67
'That where I am, there ye may be also.'
74:68
'So great is the zeal I have shown for this matter, that I should already have gone thither, had not the place long since been made ready for you.'
74:69
showing that they ought to be exceedingly of good courage and confidence.
74:70
Then, lest He should seem to be saying this merely as one soothing their minds, but that they might believe it is indeed so, He adds,
74:71
'And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.'
74:72
See how He gives them proof that these things are not spoken idly? He says this because He perceived that their soul was now longing to learn this.
74:73
For Peter said what he said, not in order to learn, but so that he might follow.
74:74
但那人既受了責備,而先前看似不可能的事,祂卻宣告為可能,那看似不可能之事便引起彼得渴望精確地明白它;
But when that one was rebuked, and what had hitherto seemed impossible He declared to be possible, and its appearing impossible led Peter to desire to know it with exactness;
74:75
因為正如祂說「你要不認我」時,雖無人說出甚麼,祂卻鑒察人心中的事,並說「你們不要憂愁」;
for just as, when He had said, 'Thou shalt deny Me,' though no one had uttered anything, He was searching out the things in the heart and said, 'Be not troubled';
74:76
so here also, by saying, 'Ye know,' He made plain the desire in their mind, and Himself gave them occasion to ask.
74:77
Now the question, 'Whither goest Thou?' Peter asks out of great affection, but Thomas out of timidity.
74:78
'Lord, we know not whither Thou goest.'
74:79
他說:「我們不知道那地方;
'We know not the place,' he says;
74:80
'and how shall we know the way that leads thither?' And observe with how much reserve he speaks.
74:81
因為他並沒有說「請告訴我們那地方」;
For he did not say, 'Tell us the place';
74:82
but, 'We know not whither Thou goest.'
74:83
For this they had all long been in travail to learn.
74:84
For if the Jews were perplexed on hearing it, and that too when they wished to be rid of Him, much more did those who never wished to be parted from Him desire to learn it.
74:85
They were afraid, indeed, to ask Him, yet nevertheless they do ask, both out of their great longing and out of their anguish.
74:86
What then says Christ? 'I am the way and the truth and the life.'
74:87
'No man can come to the Father but by Me.'
74:88
那麼,當彼得起初問「你往哪裡去?」時,祂為何不立刻說「我往父那裡去;
Why then, when Peter first asked, 'Whither goest Thou?' did He not straightway say, 'I go to the Father;
74:89
你們現在還不能去」;
and ye cannot come now';
74:90
反倒引入如此冗長的一段言語,把問答編織在一起呢?因為對猶太人,祂恰當地沒有說這話;
but instead introduced so long a circuit of words, composing questions and answers? For to the Jews He fittingly did not say this;
74:91
但對這些人,卻是為何呢?祂對這些人和對猶太人,都曾說過祂是從神出來,又往神那裡去;
but to these, why? He said to these as well as to the Jews that He came forth from God and goes to God;
74:92
and now He says it more plainly than before,
74:93
and to the Jews He did not speak thus plainly.
74:94
因為祂若說「若不藉著我,你們不能到父那裡去」,他們必立刻以為這話是狂傲自誇;
For had He said, 'Ye cannot come to the Father but by Me,' they would straightway have deemed the thing an arrogant boast;
74:95
but now, by concealing it, He cast them into anguish.
74:96
'And to the disciples, and to Peter, why did He speak thus?' one may say. He knew his great eagerness, and that thereby he would press upon Him the more, troubling Him.
74:97
So then, in order to lead him away from this, He conceals it.
74:98
But having accomplished what He wished through the obscurity and the concealing of the saying, He again uncovers it.
74:99
For having said that 'Where I am, no man can come,' He added,
74:100
「在我父的家裡有許多住處」;
'In My Father's house are many mansions';
74:101
and again, 'No man cometh to the Father but by Me.'
74:102
因此,起初祂不願對他們說這話,免得使他們陷入更深的沮喪;
This, then, He did not wish to say to them at the outset, so as not to cast them into greater despondency;
74:103
but when He had calmed them, then He says it.
74:104
For by the rebuke of Peter He had cast out the greater part of their despondency, and having fallen into fear lest they should hear the same things, they were the more restrained.
74:105
這就是「若不藉著我,沒有人能來」這話的憑據;
This is the proof of the saying, 'No man cometh but by Me';
74:106
and the words, 'And the truth and the life,' are the proof that these things shall assuredly come to pass.
74:107
「所以既然我是真理,從我而出的就沒有虛假;
'Nothing therefore from Me is false, if I am the truth;
74:108
and if I am also the life, not even death itself shall be able to hinder you from coming.'
74:109
再者,我若是道路,你們就不需要有人牽著你們的手引導了;
Moreover, if I am the way, ye shall have no need of one to lead you by the hand;
74:110
我若又是真理,所說的話就毫無虛謊;
and if I am also the truth, the things spoken are no falsehood;
74:111
and if I am also the life, then even though ye die, ye shall attain to the things that have been spoken.
74:112
至於那道路的事,他們既明白又承認了;
Now the matter of the way they both understood and confessed;
74:113
yet they did not dare to speak concerning the things they were ignorant of.
74:114
But nevertheless they received much consolation from the way.
74:115
'If, then, I am Lord,' He says, 'with power to bring you to the Father, ye shall assuredly come thither.'
74:116
For neither is it possible to come by any other way.
74:117
Having said before, 'No one can come to me unless the Father draw him,'
74:118
and again, 'If I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men unto myself,'
74:119
and now once more, 'No one comes to the Father except through me,' He shows Himself equal to the One who begot Him.
74:120
But how is it that, having said, 'Where I go you know, and the way you know,' He went on to add:
74:121
「你們若認識我,也就認識我的父了;從今以後,你們認識祂,並且已經看見祂」呢?祂並非自相矛盾;
'If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; and from now on you know Him, and have seen Him'? He is not contradicting Himself;
74:122
for indeed they knew Him, yet not as they ought to have known.
74:123
For they knew Him as God, but not yet as Father; only later, when the Spirit came upon them, did He establish in them all knowledge.
74:124
And what He says is of this sort:
74:125
'If you had known my essence and my dignity, you would have known that of the Father also.'
74:126
'And from now on you know Him, and have seen Him' (the one referring to the future, the other to the present).
74:127
By 'seeing' He means the knowledge that is according to the mind.
74:128
因為凡可見之物,我們既能看見,卻仍可能不認識;
For things that are seen we are able both to see and yet to be ignorant of;
74:129
but things that are known we cannot both know and be ignorant of.
74:130
As when he says, 'He was seen also of angels.'
74:131
然而被看見的並非那本質本身;
And yet it was not the very essence itself that was seen;
74:132
but nevertheless he says He was seen, that is, in the measure in which it was possible for them to behold Him.
74:133
It is said in this way so that you may learn that he who has seen Him knows the One who begot Him.
74:134
But they beheld Him not in His naked essence, but clothed with flesh.
74:135
祂在別處也知道稱認識為「看見」;
He knows also elsewhere to call knowledge 'sight';
74:136
as when He says, 'Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.'
74:137
祂所說的「清心」,並非單指脫離淫亂的人,乃是指脫離一切罪惡的人;
By 'pure' He means not those freed from fornication only, but those freed from all sins;
74:138
for every sin puts filth upon the soul.
74:139
Let us therefore do all things to wipe away the defilement.
74:140
首先,洗禮洗淨它;
First the washing wipes it away;
74:141
afterward there are also many other ways, of every sort.
74:142
因為神既是愛人的,就在這些之後又賜給我們各樣脫罪的途徑;
For God, being a lover of mankind, gave us even after these things various ways of deliverance;
74:143
of which the first of all is that through almsgiving.
74:144
'By almsgiving,' he says, 'and by faith sins are purged away.'
74:145
然而我所說的施捨,並非那出於不義的施捨;
But by almsgiving I do not mean that which comes from injustice;
74:146
for that is not almsgiving at all, but cruelty and inhumanity.
74:147
剝奪這人、卻給那人穿衣,又有什麼益處呢?因為在這事上總當從憐憫起首;
For what profit is it to strip one man and clothe another? For one ought to begin from mercy in the matter;
74:148
for even if we give away all that belongs to others, there is no gain to us.
74:149
And Zacchaeus shows this, who then said that he propitiated God, by giving fourfold of what he had taken away.
74:150
But we, plundering ten thousand things and giving little, think to make God propitious, not knowing that we rather provoke Him.
74:151
你且告訴我,你若把一頭死了又腐爛的驢從三岔路口和街巷中拖來,抬到祭壇上,眾人豈不都要用石頭打死你,以你為可咒可憎的嗎?那麼,我若證明那出於搶奪的祭物比這更為可憎,我們還能找到什麼辯解呢?就假設有一件寶物是出於搶奪而來的;
For tell me, if you were to drag a dead and rotting ass from the crossroads and the streets and bring it to the altar, would not all stone you as accursed and abominable? What then, if I prove that the sacrifice from plunder is more abominable than this, what defence shall we find? For let us suppose that some treasure has been made from robbery;
74:152
does it not stink worse than a dead ass? Do you wish to learn how great is the putrefaction of sin? Hear the Prophet saying:
74:153
'My wounds stink and are corrupt.'
74:154
但你卻用言語求神忘記你所行的惡;
But you, by your words, ask God to forget the evils you do;
74:155
yet by your very deeds, plundering and defrauding, you contrive that He should remember them continually, laying your sin upon the altar.
74:156
And now this is not the only sin, but one yet more grievous than this, that you defile the souls of the saints.
74:157
因為那一樣不過是石頭,尚且被分別為聖;
For the one is a stone, and is sanctified;
74:158
但那些靈魂卻時常擔負著基督自己;
but those souls continually bear Christ Himself;
74:159
and do you dare to send there from such uncleanness? 'Not so,' he says;
74:160
'not those very moneys, but others.'
74:161
你豈不知道,即使只有一滴不義落入極多的錢財中,全部也都被玷污了嗎?正如若有人把糞投入清潔的泉源,就使整個泉源都成為不潔;
Do you not know that even if but a drop of injustice fall into a great abundance of money, the whole is defiled? Just as, then, if one cast dung into a pure spring, he makes the whole of it unclean;
74:162
so also, when some covetousness enters into wealth, it makes the whole breathe forth the stench of that source.
74:163
我們進教會的時候,尚且洗手;
Then we wash our hands when entering the church;
74:164
為何卻不再洗心呢?難道是手發出聲音嗎?乃是靈魂發出言語;神所鑒察的正是靈魂;
but our heart no longer? Do our hands then send forth a voice? It is the soul that utters the words; upon it God looks;
74:165
there is no need of the body's cleanness when that soul is defiled. For what profit is it, if you scour the outward hands, but keep the inward ones unclean? For this is the dreadful thing, and that which overturns all: that fearing the small things, we despise the great.
74:166
用未洗的手禱告,乃是無關緊要的事;
To pray with unwashed hands is a matter of indifference;
74:167
but to pray with an unwashed mind, this is the very worst of all evils.
74:168
Hear also what was said to the Jews who were occupied about such uncleannesses:
74:169
'Wash the wickedness from your heart.'
74:170
'How long shall the thoughts of your labours remain in you?' Let us too wash ourselves, not with mire, but with pure water, with almsgiving, and not with covetousness.
74:171
First be delivered from plundering, and then display your almsgiving.
74:172
Let us turn aside from evil, and do good.
74:173
Stay your hands from covetousness, and thus lead them on to almsgiving.
74:174
But if with the same hands we strip others—even though we do not clothe them with what was taken from those very persons—not even so do we escape punishment.
74:175
For the pretext of propitiation becomes a pretext for every transgression.
74:176
For not to show mercy is better than to show mercy in this way.
74:177
Since for Cain also it would have been better not to have offered at all.
74:178
But if he who brought the lesser thing provoked God,
74:179
那把別人之物拿去獻的,怎能不惹祂發怒呢?祂說:「我曾吩咐你不可搶奪;
how shall he who gives what belongs to others not provoke Him? 'I told you,' He says, 'not to plunder;
74:180
and do you honour me from these things? What do you suppose? That I take pleasure in these? Assuredly then He will say to you:
74:181
'You thought wickedly, that I should be like unto you.'
74:182
'I will reprove you, and set your sins in order before your face.'
74:183
But God forbid that any should hear this voice; rather, having wrought pure almsgiving, and holding our lamps bright, may we so enter into the bridal chamber, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages.
