41:1
O death, how bitter is the remembrance of you to a man that is at peace in his possessions, To the man that has nothing to distract him, and has prosperity in all things, And that still has strength to receive meat!
O death, acceptable is your sentence to a man that is needy, and that fails in strength, That is in extreme old age, and is distracted about all things, And is perverse, and has lost patience!
Don’t be afraid of the sentence of death; Remember those who have been before you, and that come after: This is the sentence from the Lord over all flesh.
And why do you refuse, when it is the good pleasure of the Most High? Whether it be ten, or a hundred, or a thousand years, There is no inquisition of life in the grave.
The children of sinners are abominable children, And they frequent the dwellings of the ungodly.
41:6
Et quid superveniet tibi in beneplacito Altissimi ? sive decem, sive centum, sive mille anni :
The inheritance of sinners’ children shall perish, And with their posterity shall be a perpetual reproach.
41:7
non est enim in inferno accusatio vitæ.
Children will complain of an ungodly father, Because they shall be reproached for his sake.
Woe to you, ungodly men, Which have forsaken the law of the Most High God!
If you⌃ be born, you⌃ shall be born to a curse; If you⌃ die, a curse shall be your portion.
41:10
De patre impio queruntur filii, quoniam propter illum sunt in opprobrio.
All things that are of the earth shall go back to the earth: So the ungodly shall go from a curse to perdition.
41:11
vobis, viri impii, qui dereliquistis legem Domini Altissimi !
The mourning of men is about their bodies: But the name of sinners being evil shall be blotted out.
Have regard to your name; For it continueth with you longer than a thousand great treasures of gold.
41:13
Omnia quæ de terra sunt in terram convertentur : sic impii a maledicto in perditionem.
A good life has its number of days; And a good name continueth forever.
41:14
Luctus hominum in corpore ipsorum : nomen autem impiorum delebitur.
My children, keep instruction in peace: But wisdom that is hid, and a treasure that is not seen, What profit is in them both?
Better is a man that hides his foolishness Than a man that hides his wisdom.
41:16
Bonæ vitæ numerus dierum : bonum autem nomen permanebit in ævum.
Wherefore show reverence to my word: For it is not good to retain every kind of shame; And not all things are approved by all in good faith.
41:17
Disciplinam in pace conservate, filii : sapientia enim abscondita, et thesaurus invisus, quæ utilitas in utrisque ?
Be ashamed of whoredom before father and mother: And of a lie before a prince and a mighty man;
在父母面前,要以淫亂為羞愧;在官長和掌權者面前,要以謊言為羞愧;
41:18
Of an offence before a judge and ruler; Of iniquity before the congregation and the people; Of unjust dealing before a partner and friend;
在審判官和首領面前,要以過犯為羞愧;在會眾和百姓面前,要以罪孽為羞愧;
41:19
Verumtamen reveremini in his quæ procedunt de ore meo :
And of theft in regard of the place where you sojourn, And in regard of the truth of God and his covenant; And of leaning with your elbow at meat; And of scurrility in the matter of giving and taking;
在同伴和朋友面前,要以不義為羞愧;在你寄居之地,要以偷竊為羞愧;
41:20
And of silence before those who salute you; And of looking upon a woman that is a harlot;
要以違背神的真理和約為羞愧;在筵席上以肘倚桌為羞愧;
41:21
And of turning away your face from a kinsman; Of taking away a portion or a gift; And of gazing upon a woman that has a husband;
要以拒受或拒給為羞愧;對向你問安的人沉默不語,也當為羞愧;
41:22
Of being over busy with his maid; and come not near her bed; Of upbraiding speeches before friends; And after you have given, upbraid not;
注視妓女是當羞愧的,轉臉不顧親屬也是當羞愧的;
41:23
Of repeating and speaking what you have heard; And of revealing of secrets.
奪取人的份額或禮物是當羞愧的,注目於有夫之婦也是當羞愧的;
41:24
So shall you be truly shamefast, And find favor in the sight of every man.
過分糾纏自己的婢女是當羞愧的,也不可挨近她的牀;
41:25
a salutantibus de silentio, a respectu mulieris fornicariæ, et ab aversione vultus cognati.
Of friends, be ashamed of words of reproach, and after you have given, do not reproach.
在朋友面前說羞辱的話是當羞愧的,給了人以後又加責備,也是當羞愧的;
41:26
Of repeating and of a word heard, and of disclosing hidden words.
傳述、轉述所聽見的,以及揭露隱密的話,都是當羞愧的;
41:27
And so you shall be truly modest, and shall find favour before every man.
