17:1
The Lord created man of the earth, And turned him back to it again.
He gave them days by number, and a set time, And gave them authority over the things that are thereon.
He endued them with strength proper to them; And made them according to his own image.
He put the fear of man upon all flesh, And gave him to have dominion over beasts and fowls.
He created out of him a help like himself; he gave them counsel and a tongue and eyes and ears and a heart to think with, and he filled them with the discipline of understanding.
17:6
Creavit illis scientiam spiritus , sensu implevit cor illorum , et mala et bona ostendit illis .
Counsel, and tongue, and eyes, Ears, and heart, gave he them to understand withal.
17:7
Posuit oculum suum super corda illorum , ostendere illis magnalia operum suorum :
He filled them with the knowledge of wisdom, And showed them good and evil.
He set his eye upon their hearts, To show them the majesty of his works.
17:9
Addidit illis disciplinam , et legem vitæ hæreditavit illos .
He added to them discipline, and gave them the law of life for an inheritance.
And they will praise the name of his holiness, That they may declare the majesty of his works.
17:11
Et magnalia honoris ejus vidit oculus illorum , et honorem vocis audierunt aures illorum . Et dixit illis : Attendite ab omni iniquo .
He added to them knowledge, And gave them a law of life for a heritage.
17:12
Et mandavit illis unicuique de proximo suo .
He made an everlasting covenant with them, And showed them his judgements.
Their eyes saw the majesty of his glory; And their ear heard the glory of his voice.
17:14
In unamquamque gentem præposuit rectorem :
And he said to them, Beware of all unrighteousness; And he gave them commandment, each man concerning his neighbor.
17:15
et pars Dei Israël facta est manifesta .
Their ways are ever before him; They will not be hid from his eyes.
17:16
Et omnia opera illorum velut sol in conspectu Dei : et oculi ejus sine intermissione inspicientes in viis eorum .
And all their works are like the sun in the sight of God, and his eyes look without ceasing upon their ways.
For every nation he appointed a ruler; And Israel is the Lord’s portion.
A man's almsgiving is as a seal with him, and he will preserve a man's kindness as the apple of his eye.
17:19
Et postea resurget , et retribuet illis retributionem , unicuique in caput ipsorum , et convertet in interiores partes terræ .
All their works are as the sun before him; And his eyes are continually upon their ways.
Their iniquities are not hid from him; And all their sins are before the Lord.
17:21
Convertere ad Dominum , et relinque peccata tua :
Turn to the Lord, and forsake your sins.
17:22
precare ante faciem Domini , et minue offendicula .
With him the alms of a man is as a signet; And he will keep the bounty of a man as the apple of the eye.
Afterwards he will rise up and recompense them, And render their recompense upon their head.
17:24
et cognosce justitias et judicia Dei , et sta in sorte propositionis , et orationis altissimi Dei .
Howbeit to those who repent he granteth a return; And he comforteth those who are losing patience.
Return to the Lord, and forsake sins: Make your prayer before his face, and lessen the offence.
17:26
Non demoreris in errore impiorum : ante mortem confitere : a mortuo , quasi nihil , perit confessio .
Turn again to the Most High, and turn away from iniquity; And greatly hate the abominable thing.
17:27
Confiteberis vivens , vivus et sanus confiteberis : et laudabis Deum , et gloriaberis in miserationibus illius .
Who will give praise to the Most High in the grave, Instead of them which live and return thanks?
Thanksgiving perishes from the dead, as from one that is not: He that is in life and health will praise the Lord.
How great is the mercy of the Lord, And his forgiveness to those who turn to him!
For all things can’t be in men, Because the son of man is not immortal.
17:31
Virtutem altitudinis cæli ipse conspicit : et omnes homines terra et cinis .
What is brighter than the sun? yet this fails: And an evil man will think on flesh and blood.
