1 Kings 20

And Nabouthai the Iezraelite had one vineyard beside the threshing floor of Achaab king of Samaria.

And Achaab spoke to Nabouthai, saying: Give me your vineyard, and it shall be for me a garden of herbs, for it is near my house; and I will give you another vineyard, better than it. But if it pleases you, I will give you silver as the exchange for this vineyard of yours, and it shall be for me a garden of herbs.

And Nabouthai said to Achaab: May it never be for me from my God to give the inheritance of my fathers to you.

And the spirit of Achaab was troubled, and he lay down on his bed and covered his face and did not eat bread.

And Iezabel his wife came in to him and spoke to him: Why is your spirit troubled, and you are not eating bread?

And he said to her: Because I spoke to Nabouthai the Iezraelite, saying, Give me your vineyard for silver; and if you wish, I will give you another vineyard in its place. And he said: I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.

And Iezabel his wife said to him: Do you now act thus as king over Israel? Arise, eat bread, and be yourself. I will give you the vineyard of Nabouthai the Iezraelite.

And she wrote a letter in the name of Achaab and sealed it with his seal and sent the letter to the elders and the free men who dwelt with Nabouthai.

And it was written in the letters, saying: Proclaim a fast, and seat Nabouthai at the head of the people;

and seat two men, sons of lawless ones, opposite him, and let them testify against him, saying: He has blessed God and king. And let them lead him out and stone him, and let him die.

And the men of his city, the elders and the free men who dwelt in his city, did as Iezabel sent to them, as it was written in the letters which she sent to them.

They proclaimed a fast and seated Nabouthai at the head of the people.

And two men, sons of lawless ones, came and sat opposite him and testified against him, saying: You have blessed God and king. And they led him outside the city and stoned him with stones, and he died.

And they sent to Iezabel, saying: Nabouthai has been stoned and is dead.

And when Iezabel heard, she said to Achaab: Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Nabouthai the Iezraelite, who would not give it to you for silver; for Nabouthai is not alive, for he is dead.

And when Achaab heard that Nabouthai the Iezraelite was dead, he tore his own garments and put on sackcloth. And after these things it came about that he rose and went down to the vineyard of Nabouthai the Iezraelite to take possession of it.

And the Lord spoke to Eliou the Thesbite, saying:

Arise and go down to meet Achaab king of Israel, who is in Samaria. Behold, he is in the vineyard of Nabouthai, for he has gone down there to take possession of it.

And you shall speak to him, saying: Thus says the Lord: Since you have murdered and taken possession, therefore thus says the Lord: In every place where the swine and the dogs licked the blood of Nabouthai, there the dogs shall lick your blood, and the harlots shall wash in your blood.

And Achaab said to Eliou: Have you found me, O my enemy? And he said: I have found you, because you have been sold in vain to do what is evil before the Lord, to provoke him to anger.

Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am bringing evils upon you, and I will kindle a fire after you, and I will utterly destroy of Achaab every one who urinates against a wall, and the one shut up and the one left behind in Israel.

And I will make your house like the house of Ieroboam son of Nabat and like the house of Baasa son of Achia, because of the provocations with which you provoked me and made Israel to sin.

And concerning Iezabel the Lord spoke, saying: The dogs shall devour her at the outer wall of Iezrael.

The dead of Achaab in the city the dogs shall eat, and his dead in the open field the birds of heaven shall eat.

But in vain was Achaab, in that he was sold to do what is evil before the Lord, as Iezabel his wife turned him aside.

And he became utterly abominable, going after the abominations, according to all that the Amorite did, whom the Lord utterly destroyed from before the sons of Israel.

And because of the word, Achaab was stricken to the heart before the Lord, and he went about weeping, and tore his tunic, and girded sackcloth on his body, and fasted, and put on sackcloth in the day that he struck down Nabouthai the Iezraelite.

And the word of the Lord came by the hand of his servant Eliou concerning Achaab, and the Lord said:

Have you seen how Achaab was stricken to the heart before me? I will not bring the evil in his days, but in the days of his son I will bring the evil.
