Of Apolinarius' writings against the heresy referred to, Serapion has made mention—he who, in the times referred to, is held by tradition to have become bishop of the church of Antioch after Maximinus. He mentions him in a private letter to Caricus and Pontius, in which he too, while setting straight the same heresy, adds these words:
「And that you may see this also, that the working of this lying order, which is called the New Prophecy, has been held in abomination by the whole brotherhood throughout the world, I have sent you also the writings of Claudius Apolinarius, who became the most blessed bishop of Hierapolis in Asia.」
In this letter of Serapion are also borne the signatures of various bishops, of whom one has thus subscribed: 「Aurelius Quirinius, a martyr, I pray that you may be in good health」; and another in this manner: 「Aelius Publius Julius, bishop from the colony of Debeltum in Thrace. As God lives in the heavens, the blessed Sotas in Anchialus wished to cast out the demon of Priscilla, but the hypocrites would not permit it.」
And there are borne in the writings referred to the autograph signatures of many other bishops as well, who concurred with these. Such, then, were the matters concerning these persons.
