And when Adonibezek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and utterly destroyed it—just as they did to Jericho and its king, so they did to Ai and its king—and that the inhabitants of Gabaon had gone over to Joshua and to Israel,
And Adonibezek king of Jerusalem sent to Ailam king of Chebron and to Phidon king of Ierimouth and to Iephtha king of Lachis and to Dabir king of Odollam, saying:
And the five kings of the Jebusites went up—the king of Jerusalem and the king of Chebron and the king of Ierimouth and the king of Lachis and the king of Odollam—they and all their people, and they encamped around Gabaon and besieged it.
And the inhabitants of Gabaon sent to Joshua at the camp of Israel at Galgala, saying: Do not slacken your hands from your servants; come up to us quickly and rescue us and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.
And the Lord threw them into confusion before the sons of Israel, and the Lord crushed them with a great crushing at Gabaon; and they pursued them by the way of the ascent of Oronin and cut them down as far as Azeka and as far as Makeda.
And as they were fleeing before the sons of Israel on the descent of Oronin, the Lord cast down on them hailstones from heaven as far as Azeka; and those who died from the hailstones were more than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword in the battle.
Then Joshua spoke to the Lord, in the day when God delivered the Amorite into the hand of Israel, when he crushed them at Gabaon and they were crushed before the sons of Israel; and Joshua said: Let the sun stand still over Gabaon, and the moon over the ravine of Ailon.
And the sun and the moon stood still until God drove back their enemies. And the sun stood in the middle of heaven; it did not go forward toward the west until the completion of one whole day.
But as for you, do not stand still; pursue after your enemies and cut off their rear guard, and do not allow them to enter their cities; for the Lord our God has delivered them into our hands.
And it came about, when Joshua and every son of Israel left off cutting them down with an exceedingly great slaughter until they were finished, that those who escaped got away into the fortified cities.
And they brought out the five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, and the king of Chebron, and the king of Ierimouth, and the king of Lachis, and the king of Odollam.
And when they had brought them out to Joshua, Joshua called together all Israel and those who began the war, who marched with him, saying to them: Come forward and put your feet on their necks. And they came forward and put their feet on their necks.
And Joshua said to them: Do not fear them nor be dismayed; be courageous and be strong, for so will the Lord do to all your enemies whom you are fighting against.
And it came about toward the going down of the sun that Joshua gave orders, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had taken refuge; and they rolled stones onto the cave, which remain to this present day.
And they took Makeda on that day and put it to the mouth of the sword and utterly destroyed every breathing thing in it; and there was left in it no one saved or escaped. And they did to the king of Makeda as they had done to the king of Iericho.
And the Lord delivered it into the hands of Israel, and they took it and its king, and put it to the mouth of the sword, with every breathing thing in it; and there was left in it not even one saved or escaped. And they did to its king as they had done to the king of Iericho.
And the Lord delivered Lachis into the hands of Israel, and he took it on the second day, and they put it to the mouth of the sword and utterly destroyed it, as they had done to Lebna.
Then Ailam king of Gazer came up to help Lachis; and Joshua struck him with the mouth of the sword, and his people, until there was not left of them one saved or escaped.
And the Lord delivered it into the hand of Israel, and he took it on that day and put it to the mouth of the sword; and every breathing thing in it they killed, as they had done to Lachis.
And he struck it with the mouth of the sword, and every breathing thing, as many as were in it; there was none saved. As they had done to Odollam, so they utterly destroyed it and all that was in it.
and they took it and its king and its villages, and struck it with the mouth of the sword and utterly destroyed it and every breathing thing in it; and they left in it no one saved. As they had done to Chebron and to its king, so they did to Dabir and to its king.
So Joshua struck all the land of the hill country and the Nageb and the lowland and Asedoth, and their kings; they left none of them saved, and every breathing thing that lived he utterly destroyed, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded.
