And the Lord said to Samuel, How long will you mourn over Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and come, I will send you to Jessai as far as Bethlehem, for I have seen among his sons one to be king for me.
And Samuel said, How shall I go? Saul will hear it and kill me. And the Lord said, Take a heifer of the herd in your hand and say, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.
And Samuel did all that the Lord spoke to him, and came to Bethlehem; and the elders of the city were amazed at meeting him, and they said, Is your coming peace, O seer?
And he said, Peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify yourselves and rejoice with me today. And he sanctified Jessai and his sons and called them to the sacrifice.
And the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance nor on the stature of his height, for I have rejected him; for God does not see as a man looks: for man looks at the face, but God looks at the heart.
And Samuel said to Jessai, Have the boys run out? And he said, There remains yet the little one; behold, he is shepherding among the flock. And Samuel said to Jessai, Send and take him, for we shall not sit down until he comes.
And he sent and brought him in; and he was ruddy, with beauty of eyes, and good in appearance to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, Arise and anoint David, for this one is good.
And Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and a spirit of the Lord leapt upon David from that day onward. And Samuel arose and went away to Armathaim.
Let your servants now speak before you, and let them seek out for our lord a man who knows how to play on the lyre; and it shall be, when an evil spirit is upon you, that he shall play on his lyre, and it will be well with you, and he will give you rest.
And one of his young men answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jessai the Bethlehemite, and he knows how to play; and the man is prudent, and the man is a warrior, and wise in speech, and a man good in form, and the Lord is with him.
And it came to pass, when an evil spirit was upon Saul, that David took the lyre and played with his hand; and Saul was refreshed, and it was well with him, and the evil spirit departed from him.
