55:1
O profundum divitiarum sapientiæ et scientia Dei! et quis cognovit sensum ejus (Rom. XI, 33) ?
O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! And who has known His mind? (Rom. 11:33)
55:2
Quia enim existimare potest in diebus adolescentiæ tuæ, o venerabilis mihi integritate quidem et meritis domina, sed ordine ac gradibus in Christo filia, cum in c<rnobio sanctarum virginum conferta choro spiritali, studio et divinarum Scripturarum eruditionibus intenta, me tunc quasi partem animæ tuæ diligeres, hominem juvenem et non magnae indolis virum, qui per abrupta voluptatum lasciviamque vagabatur, ac perærumnosis anfractibus, propter lætitiam scilicet temporalis felicitatis, in clandestino jactu festinabat immergi, cujus præterea nomen tantum auditu noverat, vultu penitus ignorabat, quod ad hoc nos officium dispensatio omnipotentis Dei prædestinatos haberet, scilicet ut uobis familiam suam traderet gubernandam, isto duntaxat ordine, ut in officina hujus Ecclesiæ ministrares, secundum divini praecepti oraculum.
For who could have supposed, in the days of your youth—O lady honorable to me indeed in integrity and merits, but in order and rank my daughter in Christ—when, packed in the convent of holy virgins amid a spiritual choir, intent upon the study and instructions of the divine Scriptures, you then loved me as a part of your soul, a young man and one of no great endowment, who wandered through the precipices of pleasures and wantonness, and through toilsome windings, hastening—for the sake, that is, of temporal happiness—to be plunged in a secret cast, whose name besides you knew only by hearing and whose face you were wholly ignorant of—that the dispensation of Almighty God should hold us predestined for this office: namely, that He should hand over His household to you to be governed, with this rank at least, that you should minister in the workshop of this Church, according to the oracle of the divine precept.
55:3
'If,' He says, 'you separate the precious from the vile, you shall be as my mouth' (Jer. 15:19). Like a most skillful money-changer, that among those who preserve in themselves the image of the eternal King impressed upon them, you may set apart, by a sagacious and discerning division, those who defile His coin with the filthy adulterine key against conscience: since you have exercised these sacred, dedicated ministries not as a raw recruit or a neophyte, but almost from the very cradle, through the years of infancy and adolescence, from youth onward you have exercised your life in regular studies, in which you have learned the norm of living, and have abundantly attained a store of doctrine.
55:4
Ego vero qui scientiæ prærogativam, præpediente segnitia, assecutus non sum, et ab abstinentia quam in te intulit divina dignatio procui distare me video et terrenis necessitatibus implicari. Unde garrulus potius a sapientibus quam recte atiquid loquens jure reprehendor, sicut etiam ipsius dictionis designat impolita materies. Sed licet stolidus et terreni operis luto fœdatus, pr sci tamen amoris rccordans, credi non potest, postquam hoc quod nunc habes officium sorlita fuisti, qualem de te babeam sollicitudinem \ el timorem. Unde quantam devotionem habui, ut illud secundum Deum orJinate suscipees, et absque macula bajulares;
But I, who—hindered by sloth—have not attained the prerogative of knowledge, and who see myself standing far from the abstinence which the divine condescension has brought into you, and see myself entangled in earthly necessities: whence I am justly reproached as garrulous by the wise rather than as one speaking anything rightly, as even the unpolished matter of my very speech shows. But although stupid and befouled with the mire of earthly work, yet recalling a foreknowing love, it cannot be believed—after you obtained this office which you now hold—what solicitude and fear I have concerning you. Whence, however great the devotion I had, that you should take it up ordinately according to God, and bear it without blemish;
但我,因怠惰所阻,未曾獲得知識的特權,並看見自己遠離那神聖的俯就所賜入你內的節制,並看見自己被屬世的需求所纏繞:因此,我被智者公正地責為多言之人,而非能正確言說之人,正如我言辭本身粗陋的內容所顯示的。然而,我雖愚鈍、雖被屬世工作的污泥所玷染,卻因回想那先知的愛,令人難以置信——在你獲得你如今所持的這職務之後——我對你懷有何等的掛慮與畏懼。因此,我曾懷有何等的熱忱,願你按照天主有序地接受它,並毫無瑕疵地擔負它;
55:5
so much the more keenly I fear, lest perchance either the divine gaze or human opinion should reproach in you that which lies open beside you to reproach; and lest it be found in you, so that those who wish to reproach may seem worthily to tear you apart, or those who have sought to imitate may go astray: which you will the more augustly be able to avoid, if you always set the supreme judgment before the eyes of your heart. Hear me therefore, O sweetest virgin of Christ, sister and daughter: however much you always desire to be occupied in spiritual studies, yet for your sister's sake, sometimes even external affairs must at times be managed by you.
Therefore you must take the greatest care that you so transact temporal things as if for the time, and always cling more tenaciously in spiritual things with devotion and love, so that, when you have more quickly dispensed spiritual matters, you may forthwith run back to prayer or to reading as to a mother's bosom. For you ought to desire that, casting off the solicitude of the world, you may always think about the service of Christ, on account of that: 'No one,' he says, 'warring for God, entangles himself in secular affairs' (2 Tim. 2:4). Think without intermission that you are established as the lamp of this Church, not to be hidden under the bushel, but set upon the candlestick, that you may impart to all who dwell in this house the light of good works by your examples, on account of that:
55:7
In omnibus, inquit, temetipsum præbe exemplum bonorum operum (Tit. II), vitaque tua velut pennatum animal ad alta semper per desiderium evolet, per verbum rcsonet, luceat per exemplum. Cum vero ad annuntiandum verbum Dei te sororibus affectaveris, sea propter utilitatem animarum tenoremque regulæ custodiendum necessitas incubuerit ahercandi, prius cauta consideratione pensa, ut quod ore promis, faclis impleas; ut quod al is præd cas, operibus præbeas: scilicet ut in luis humeris atque cervicibus prius sentias utrum gravibus an levibus oncribus c sororum onustes;
'In all things,' he says, 'show thyself an example of good works' (Titus 2:7), and let your life, like a winged creature, ever fly aloft through desire, resound through the word, shine through example. But when you have set yourself to announce the word of God to your sisters, or when the necessity of contending for the good of souls and for keeping the tenor of the rule has pressed upon you, first weigh with cautious consideration, so that what you utter with your mouth you fulfill with your deeds; that what you preach to others, you may show forth in works: namely, that on your own shoulders and neck you may first feel whether you burden the sisters with heavy or with light loads;
他說「在一切事上,顯出你自己是善工的模範」(鐸二7),並願你的生活如同帶翅之物,常藉渴望向上飛翔,藉言語響應,藉榜樣發光。但當你著手向你的姊妹們宣講天主的話時,或當為靈魂的益處、為保守規章的常規而必須有所爭辯的需要臨到你時,你要先以謹慎的思量權衡,好使你口中所說的,你以行為成全;使你向別人所宣講的,你以工作顯出:就是說,你要先在自己的肩膊與頸項上,感受你所加於姊妹們的是沉重還是輕省的擔子;
55:8
verbi gratia, si jejunium super quotidianum t l abstinentiam extra consuetudinariam, nec non, ut assolet, plus solito in synaxi psalmos placuerit decantare. Prior in ecclesia inveniaris, postrema exeas; prima suscipias labores, solvas posterior; et in quotidiano corporis alimento atque communi cilio par sis bis cum quibus pari uteris in mensa consessu; ut quæ ad unam sedetis mensam, unum vos parque reficiat alimentum; iisdem et tu quibus et sorores ferculorum saporibus delectare, et æqualia vobis cibaria potionesque exhibe nt vel porrigant communes discoferæ vel pincernae; primatumque tuum, quem prior ad mensam tenes, prima ad virtutem parcimoniae vindices;
for example, if it should please you to enjoin a fasting beyond the daily one, or an abstinence beyond the customary, and likewise, as is usual, to chant more psalms than usual in the assembly. Let you be found first in the church, and go out last; be first to take up labors, and last to lay them down; and in the daily nourishment of the body and the common food, be equal with those with whom you use an equal seat at the same table; so that you who sit at one table, one and equal nourishment may refresh you; and let you delight in the same flavors of dishes as your sisters, and let the common servers or cupbearers set out or offer to you equal foods and drinks; and let you vindicate your primacy, which you hold first at the table, first in the virtue of frugality;
例如,若你樂意規定一種超乎每日的齋戒、或一種超乎慣常的節制,並且,如通常所行,在集會中比平常詠唱更多的聖詠。你當第一個到教堂,最後一個離開;第一個承擔勞苦,最後一個放下;在身體每日的飲食與共同的膳食上,你當與那些和你同席共坐的人平等;好使你們同坐一席,同樣平等的食物滋養你們;你也當與姊妹們同享菜餚的滋味,並讓那共同的司膳或司酒者,擺上或遞給你們相等的飲食;並且你在席上所居的首位,你當首先在節儉之德上證實它;
55:9
ut abstinentiam quam lingua praedicat, proximae fauces vel vicinus stomachus sentiat, ne forsitan subditæ audientes tacitis cogitationibus dicant: 0 quam pulchre nobis abstinentiam praedicat plenus venter, et contentas nos juhet esse vilissimis cibis ac poculis, accuratis cibis poculisque delectabilibus refertum guuur et eruclans ! Illa enim de abstinentia prædicatio acceptabilis est, quam Iurida jejuniis ora decantant. Et in his omnibus cæterisque hoc tibi novcris convenire, ut at gusti call s itimra, per quæ socias admones gradiendum, prior ipsa gradiaris; ut Omnia quæ agenda sunt, ante factis impleas;
so that the abstinence which the tongue preaches, the nearest throat or neighboring stomach may feel, lest perchance the subjects, hearing, say in silent thoughts: 'O how beautifully a full belly preaches abstinence to us, and bids us be content with the vilest foods and drinks, a gullet crammed with choice foods and delightful drinks, and belching!' For that preaching about abstinence is acceptable which mouths pale with fastings chant. And in all these and other things, know that this befits you: that you should first tread the narrow path of the journey, by which you admonish your companions to walk; that all things which are to be done, you should first fulfill in deeds;
好使那舌頭所宣講的節制,最近的咽喉或相鄰的胃能感受到,免得或許那些屬下聽了,在默然的思念中說:「哦,一個飽腹何等美妙地向我們宣講節制,命令我們以最粗劣的飲食為足,而那塞滿了精美飲食、還在打嗝的咽喉!」因為關於節制的宣講,唯有那因齋戒而蒼白的口所詠唱的,才是可蒙悅納的。在這一切及其餘的事上,你要知道這是與你相宜的:就是你當首先踏上那條狹窄的旅途,就是你勸勉同伴當行的;使一切當行之事,你當先以行為成全;
55:10
so that afterward, like a trumpet led into sound by a stroke, you may burst forth more rightly in voice, on account of that dominical word: 'He who,' He says, 'shall scandalize one of these little ones who believe in me' (Matt. 18:6), and the rest. Among other things, with great caution you must guard that you love equally all in the monastery, whose governance you have equally imposed upon your neck; nor love one more, another less: but dispose all the things there are, in which possibility exists, with equal moderation, and dispense them with equal measure, and impart to them equal charity, and bestow what is necessary, not on any by private love, but on all according to the merits of each.
Do not prefer her who has pleased you by countenance and gaze, nor her whom you have known by appearance, nor her by whose more flattering compliance you have been charmed; but her whom the love of Christ and a more religious life shall have shown. If the Lord has deigned to bestow some little substance upon the monastery by the course of things, let it be dispensed with the highest line of equity, with an equal balance for all, as each shall have need; yet reverence being preserved for the elders, at least for those who have merited to be pillars of the Church. Be not more adorned in garments than the rest: display not what the malice of men (thus), but in those things which the devil can envy; so that in place of the adornment of garments you may be adorned in conduct and morals; and let divine reading season all these things.
55:12
Oportet enim te, ut vereor, propter quasdam, cultrum nonnunquam habere in gutture, cauterium in lingua gestare, virgam tibi et baculum in manu ferre; ut per cultrum deseces vitia, per cauterium vero ad sanitatem secta reducas; per virgæ disciplinam corrigas, pcr hacul m vero disci plinatas sustentes. Si cui vero pro suis debit s pœnitentiam imposueris, obsetvandum ut cum cam sub fasce a te imposito inclinari incurvarique conspexeris, imiteris formicæ solertiam, secundum præceptum sapientissimi Salomonis, et humerum tuum oneri ejus spiritali supponas, ut medio ejus itinere obviam oneratas subleves vel sustentes;
For it behooves you, as I fear, on account of certain ones, sometimes to have a knife in the throat, to bear a cautery on the tongue, to carry a rod and a staff in your hand; that by the knife you may cut away vices, but by the cautery bring back the cut parts to health; that by the discipline of the rod you may correct, but by the staff sustain the disciplined. But if you have imposed a penance on anyone for her debts, it must be observed that, when you behold her bowed down and bent beneath the burden imposed by you, you imitate the diligence of the ant, according to the precept of the most wise Solomon, and put your shoulder under the burden of her spirit, so that in the middle of her journey you may relieve or sustain the burdened as you meet them;
因為,如我所懼,為了某些人的緣故,你有時必須在咽喉中備刀,在舌上帶烙鐵,手中執杖與棍;好使你藉刀割除惡習,藉烙鐵把割過之處帶回康健;藉杖的管教加以糾正,藉棍支撐受管教的人。但你若為某人的過犯給她定了補贖,就須留意:當你看見她在你所加的重擔下俯身彎曲時,你當效法螞蟻的殷勤,按照至智者撒羅滿的訓誨,把你的肩膊放在她屬靈重擔之下,好使你在她旅途中途,遇見負重者時,減輕或支撐她們;
55:13
et sic singulas quibusque negligentiis aut culpis specialibus admoneas et instruas, ut de earum salute a Christo Domino tibi æterna gloria repraesentetur. Si quando vera cum sæcularibus ad co lloquendum fueris evocata, et ire necesse fuerit, prius arma frontem tropæo crucis, vexillo Christi pectus ingemina, ut cum FIla virguncula Christus comitari dignetur: semper tamen virginali pudore cooperta, memor beatae Mana:, quae cum angelo paucissimis collocuta verbis, cum Elisabeth postmodum in carmen et laudes Dei dccantando prosilivit. Cumque post haec ad eos veneris cum tantae honestatis constantia, nec ipsa vel locutionem præponas;
and so admonish and instruct each in their several negligences or special faults, that from their salvation eternal glory may be presented to you by Christ the Lord. If at any time you are called to converse with secular persons, and it is necessary to go, first arm your forehead with the trophy of the cross, redouble upon your breast the standard of Christ, that Christ may deign to accompany you, His little virgin: yet always covered with virginal modesty, mindful of blessed Mary, who, having spoken very few words with the angel, afterward leapt forth with Elizabeth into song, chanting the praises of God. And when after this you come to them with such constancy of honorableness, do not even put forward your speech first;
並要如此按各人各自的疏忽或特別的過失勸誡並教導她們,好使因她們的得救,永恆的榮耀藉主基督呈獻於你。若你有時被召去與俗人交談,並且必須前往,你要先以十字架的凱旋標記武裝你的額頭,在你胸前一再劃上基督的旗號,好使基督俯允陪伴你這位祂的小童貞女:然而你要常以童貞的廉恥遮蓋,記念真福瑪利亞,她與天使交談了極少的話後,隨即與依撒伯爾一同躍入歌頌,詠唱天主的讚美。此後當你以如此端正的堅貞來到他們面前時,甚至不要率先開口說話;
55:14
so that those who see you may give thanks to Christ the Lord, who deigned to provide such a mother for His family. Your going forth in public, moreover, ought to be as reasonable as it is rare. Let your conversation with them be always tempered with gravity and sweetness — that sweetness, namely, which proceeds from a holy and pure love; and let it always be restrained and mingled with modesty, as befits a virgin of Christ. Likewise, do not be forever silent, lest you incur the mark either of pride or of folly; but speak only so much as the occasion of the matter and the time demands, so that whoever it may be, on departing, may long to see you more than himself, or to hear your speech, which the gravity of your manners, the sweetness of your affection, and your fewness of words adorn.
If anything is asked of you by them which you decide you ought to grant, grant it with a cheerful countenance. But if there is anything which it is not fitting to grant, soften their petition at least by the courtesy of your words. Let more people know your name, let more feel your kindnesses insofar as you are able, but let few come to know your face. If ever, however, for the necessity of the monastery, you must speak apart with the steward, do so with two, or certainly with three, chosen sisters; or if a more private matter should arise, converse at least in an open place with others looking on. For the reputation of a good name, like the guarding of a perfect life, is necessary for you; and human detraction is then first to be despised, when Christ is the cause.
55:16
Si quando vero tale aliquid acciderit faciendum, ut ambiguitate constricta, quacunque parte divertas, quasi syllogismo innexa, in incertum incedas, si feceris, t nc demum ad minus te converte periculum, quod faclius ad bonum gubernando retorqueas; et non solum de dubiis, sed omnis tua actio sit propter' Deum, sermo dcDeo, cogitatio in Deum, et exceptis vitiis quibus non compassio, sed rectitudo debetur, omnibus te cupio esse compassibilem, omnibusgratam, omnibus piam, omnibus affectuosam, cunctis bonis animatam; quemadmodum Paulus Christi virginem decoravit, ut sis sanctu corpore et spiritu (I Cor. VII);
If ever such a thing should have to be done that, hemmed in by ambiguity, whichever way you turn, as though bound up in a syllogism, you must advance into uncertainty, then at last, if you must act, turn yourself to the lesser peril, which you may more easily steer back toward the good by good governance. And not only in doubtful matters, but let your every action be for the sake of God, your speech about God, your thought toward God; and, apart from those vices toward which not compassion but rectitude is owed, I desire you to be compassionate toward all, gracious to all, kind to all, affectionate to all, and animated toward all good things — even as Paul adorned the virgin of Christ, that you may be holy in body and in spirit (1 Cor. 7);
倘若有時必須行某事,以致妳被含糊所困,無論轉向哪一邊,都彷彿纏在三段論裡,只能踏入不確定之中——那麼,若妳必須行動,最終就轉向較小的危險,那較易藉善的治理引回於善的危險。並且不只在疑難之事上,願妳的一切行動都是為了神,言談論及神,思念歸向神;除了那些當以正直而非憐憫相待的罪惡以外,我願妳對眾人都滿懷憐憫,對眾人都和藹,對眾人都仁慈,對眾人都情深,對一切善事都滿有活力——正如保羅裝飾基督的貞女,使妳在身體與靈裡都成為聖潔(林前七章);
