When, for the dedication of the basilica which the most illustrious prefect and patrician, our son Liberius, built with most faithful devotion in the city of Orange, we had assembled — God being favorable and He Himself inviting — and when a spiritual discussion had arisen among us concerning matters pertaining to the ecclesiastical rule, it came to our notice that there are certain persons who, through simplicity, are willing to think about grace and free will less cautiously and not according to the rule of the catholic faith.
Whence it seemed to us just and reasonable, according to the admonition and authority of the Apostolic See, that we should set forth and subscribe with our own hands a few chapters transmitted to us from the Apostolic See, which were gathered by the ancient Fathers from the volumes of the Holy Scriptures, especially on this matter, to be observed by all for the teaching of those who think otherwise than they ought — so that, these being read, whoever hitherto has not believed as he ought concerning grace and free will may not delay to incline his mind to those things which befit the catholic faith.
