20:1
Now at this time there flourished many learned men of the church, whose letters which they wrote to one another it is easy to find still preserved even now; these were also kept for us in the library at Aelia, furnished by Alexander, who at that time was governing the church there—from which we ourselves too have been able to gather together in one the materials of the subject we have in hand.
Of these, Beryllus has left behind, together with letters, also writings of various fine learning. This man was bishop of the Arabians at Bostra; and in like manner Hippolytus too, who himself also presided over some other church.
There has also reached us a dialogue of Gaius, a most learned man, set on foot at Rome in the time of Zephyrinus against Proclus, who championed the heresy of the Phrygians. In it, curbing the recklessness and audacity of his opponents in composing new Scriptures, he mentions only thirteen epistles of the holy apostle, not numbering the Epistle to the Hebrews with the rest, since even to this day among some of the Romans it is not reckoned to be the apostle's.
