"And when He had entered into the boat, His disciples followed Him."
28:2
"And behold, there arose a great tempest on the sea, so that the boat was covered by the waves;"
28:3
Now Luke, relieving himself of being required to give the order of times, spoke thus:
28:4
"And it came to pass on one of the days, that He Himself went up into the boat, and His disciples;"
28:5
But this evangelist does not so, but here maintains the sequence.
28:6
For not all wrote all things in the same manner.
28:7
And this too I have said before, that no one may suppose there is any discrepancy by reason of an omission.
28:8
於是祂打發眾人先行,卻帶著門徒與自己同去;
So then He sent the multitudes on before, but took the disciples with Himself;
28:9
for this also those others relate.
28:10
And He took them not without purpose nor at random, but so as to make them spectators of the miracle that was about to take place.
28:11
For, like some excellent trainer, He was anointing them for both ends: both to be undismayed in dangers, and to be moderate in honors.
28:12
For lest they should think highly of themselves, because, having sent away the others, He kept them, He allows them to be tossed by the storm—thereby accomplishing this, and training them to bear trials nobly.
28:13
For great indeed were the former miracles also, but this one both contained no small exercise, and was a sign akin to the ancient one.
28:14
For this reason He takes with Himself the disciples alone.
28:15
因為凡有神蹟顯明之處,祂甚至容許眾人在場;
For where there was a display of miracles, He suffers even the crowd to be present;
28:16
but where there was a rising up of trials and terrors, these—the athletes of the world, whom He was about to train—these alone He takes to Himself.
28:17
And Matthew said simply that He was sleeping, but Luke says that He was on a pillow, thereby showing His freedom from pride, and teaching us from this much wisdom.
28:18
When, then, the surge had been stirred up, and the sea was raging, they awake Him, saying:
28:19
"Lord, save us; we perish!"
28:20
But He rebuked them before He rebuked the sea.
28:21
For, as I said, these things were permitted for the sake of exercise, and it was a figure of the trials that were about to overtake them.
28:22
For indeed even after this He often allowed them to fall into more grievous tempests of circumstances, and was longsuffering.
28:23
"But I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that"
28:24
"we were exceedingly weighed down beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life;"
28:25
and after this again, "Who delivered us from so great deaths."
28:26
Showing therefore from this that one ought to be of good courage, even though the waves be stirred up mightily, and that He orders all things for our good, He first rebukes them.
28:27
For the very fact of their being terrified came to pass for their good, that the miracle might appear the greater, and the remembrance of what had happened might become abiding.
28:28
For whenever something marvelous is about to take place, many things productive of remembrance are prepared beforehand, that after the miracle has passed they may not fall into forgetfulness of it.
28:29
Thus also Moses first fears the serpent, and fears not simply, but with much anguish, and then he beholds that marvelous thing coming to pass.
28:30
這些人也是如此,先料想自己要滅亡,然後才得拯救;
So also these men, having first expected to perish, were then saved;
28:31
that, having acknowledged the peril, they might learn the greatness of the miracle.
28:32
For if it had happened while He was awake, either they would not have been afraid, or they would not have besought Him, or they would not even have thought Him able to do any such thing.
28:33
For this reason He sleeps, giving occasion to their fear, and rendering their perception of what was happening more vivid.
28:34
For one does not behold in like manner the things that happen in other men's bodies, and those that happen in one's own.
28:35
Since then they had seen all others benefited, but themselves had enjoyed nothing, and were supine—(for they had neither lameness nor any other such infirmity)—yet it was needful that they too should enjoy the benefits through their own experience:
28:36
He permits the storm, that through the deliverance from it they might receive a clearer perception of the benefit.
28:37
為這緣故,祂不在眾人面前行這事,免得他們因小信而被定罪;
For this reason He does not do this while the crowds are present, lest they should be condemned for little faith;
28:38
but taking them alone, He corrects them, and before the storm of the waters He stills the storm of their soul, rebuking and saying:
28:39
"Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?"—teaching them at the same time that fear is wrought not by the assault of trials, but by the weakness of the understanding.
28:40
But if anyone should say that it was not a mark of cowardice nor of little faith to come and wake Him, I would answer this, that this very thing was above all a sign of their not having the fitting opinion concerning Him.
28:41
他們知道,他一旦起來,便能斥責風浪;
That He was able, once risen, to rebuke the sea, they knew;
28:42
but that He could do so even while sleeping, they did not yet know.
28:43
你何必希奇他們此時如此?就連在許多其他神蹟之後,他們仍處於極不成熟的光景。正因如此,他們屢次受責備,正如主說:「連你們到如今還不明白嗎?」所以你不要希奇:既然門徒尚且如此不成熟,眾人對他也不存甚麼崇高的看法;
And why do you marvel that they were so minded now, when even after many other miracles they were still in a very imperfect state? For this reason they are often rebuked, as when He says, 'Are you also even yet without understanding?' Do not then be astonished if, while the disciples were still so imperfectly disposed, the crowds too formed no exalted notion concerning Him;
28:44
'What manner of man is this, that even the sea and the winds obey Him?' Yet Christ did not rebuke them for calling Him a man, but waited, teaching them through the signs that their supposition was mistaken.
28:45
But whence did they suppose Him to be a man? From His appearance, from His sleeping, and from His using a boat.
28:46
For this very reason they fell into perplexity, saying,
28:47
「這是怎樣的人?」因為那睡眠與可見的形貌顯明他是人;
'What manner of man is this?' For the sleep and His visible form showed Him to be man;
28:48
but the sea and the calm revealed Him to be God.
28:49
因為摩西從前也曾行過類似的事,主便由此顯明他的超越;
For since Moses too once did some such thing, from this very fact He shows His pre-eminence;
28:50
and that the one works wonders as a servant, but the other as Master.
28:51
因為他並不像那人伸出杖來,也不向天舉手,也不需要禱告;
For He did not stretch out a rod as that one did, nor extend His hands to heaven, nor have need of prayer;
28:52
乃是像主人吩咐使女、造物主命令受造之物那樣,單憑一句話、一道命令,便使那海止息、受了約束;
but as befits a master giving orders to a handmaid, and a Creator to His creature, so did He subdue and bridle it by a word and a command alone;
28:53
and straightway all the tempest was loosed, and not even a trace of the disturbance remained.
28:54
For this the evangelist declared, saying,
28:55
'And there was a great calm.'
28:56
And that which had been spoken of the Father as a great thing, this He Himself again displayed through His works.
28:57
And what had been said concerning Him? 'He spoke,' it says, 'and the stormy wind arose.'
28:58
'He spoke, and there was a great calm.'
28:59
For this reason above all the crowds marvelled at Him, who would not have marvelled had He done it as that other did.
28:60
But when He had come out of the sea, another and more fearful miracle succeeded it.
28:61
For the demoniacs, like wicked runaway slaves seeing their master, cried out, saying,
28:62
Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοὶ , Ἰησοῦ Υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ;
'What have we to do with Thee, Jesus, Son of God?
28:63
時候還沒有到,你就上這裡來叫我們受苦嗎?」因為眾人既稱他為人,眾鬼便前來高聲宣告他的神性;
Art Thou come hither before the time to torment us?' For since the crowds called Him a man, the demons came proclaiming aloud His Godhead;
28:64
and those who would not hear the sea, as it surged and again grew still, heard the demons crying aloud these things which the sea had proclaimed through its calm.
28:65
Then, that the thing might not seem to be flattery, from the actual experience of their sufferings they cry aloud, saying,
28:66
'Art Thou come hither before the time to torment us?' For this reason the enmity is confessed first, that their supplication might not become suspect.
28:67
For they were being scourged invisibly, and were storm-tossed worse than the sea, being pricked and set on fire, and suffering things past cure from His mere presence.
28:68
For since no one dared to bring them to Him, Christ Himself goes away to them.
28:69
And Matthew says that they said,
28:70
'Art Thou come hither before the time to torment us?';
28:71
but the others added that they also besought Him and adjured Him not to cast them into the abyss.
28:72
For they supposed that their punishment already stood over them, and they feared as though they were already about to fall into vengeance.
28:73
And if Luke's account says he was one, but this one says two, not even this shows any disagreement.
28:74
因為他們若說只有一人、並無另一人,才會顯得與馬太所言相違;
For had they said that there was one only, and there was not another, they would seem to speak contrary to Matthew;
28:75
but if the one spoke of the one, and the other of the two, what is said is not a matter of conflict, but of differing narration.
28:76
在我看來,路加乃是揀選了這二人中較為嚴重的那一位來述說;
For to me it seems that Luke, having selected the more grievous of these two, spoke of him;
28:77
因此他也用更為悲慘的言辭來報導這場災禍;
wherefore he also reports the calamity in more tragic terms;
28:78
就是說,那人掙斷了捆綁與鐵鍊,在曠野四處遊蕩;
namely, that breaking the bonds and the chains he wandered about in the desert;
28:79
而馬可則說,他還用石頭砍傷自己;
while Mark says that he also cut himself with the stones;
28:80
and their very words are sufficient to display their savagery and shamelessness.
28:81
'For art Thou come hither before the time to torment us?' it says.
28:82
他們不能說自己未曾犯罪;
For that they had not sinned, they could not say;
28:83
but they ask that they may not pay the penalty before the time.
28:84
因為主既捉住他們正在行那些無法醫治、無法無天的惡事,用各樣方法扭曲、折磨他自己所造之物,他們便以為主因所行之事過於猖獗,必不肯等候懲罰的時候,所以就央求懇求他;
For since He had caught them working those incurable and lawless deeds, and distorting His own creation in every way and tormenting it, and they supposed that, by reason of the excess of what was being done, He would not await the time of chastisement, therefore they entreated and besought Him;
28:85
那些連鐵鍊也捆不住的,如今卻被捆綁著前來;
and those who could not endure even iron bonds come bound;
28:86
那些奔馳於山嶺之間的,如今卻出到平原上;
and those who ran over the mountains came out into the plains;
28:87
and those who hindered others from passing by, when they saw Him who walled up the road for them, stood still.
28:88
但他們為何又流連於墳塋之間呢?乃是要把一種致命的謬論灌輸給眾人,就是說:死者的靈魂會變成惡鬼;
But why do they also haunt the tombs? Wishing to instil into the multitude a pernicious doctrine, namely, that the souls of the departed become demons;
28:89
which may it never come to pass, nor even to enter into one's mind.
28:90
或許有人要問:「當許多術士擄取孩童、將他們殺害,好叫那靈魂日後成為他們的幫手,這時你要怎麼說呢?」但這事從何得知確實呢?他們殺害孩童,許多人都這樣說;
'What then,' one might say, 'wouldst thou answer, when many of the sorcerers take children and slay them, that they may afterwards have the soul as a fellow-worker with them?' And whence is this plain? That they slay them, many say;
28:91
but that the souls of those slain are with them, whence didst thou learn it? Tell me.
28:92
'The demoniacs themselves,' one says, 'cry out, I am the soul of such a one.'
28:93
But this too is a kind of stage-play and a diabolical deception.
28:94
For it is not the soul of the deceased that cries out, but the demon who feigns these things, so as to deceive the hearers.
28:95
For if it were possible for a soul to enter into the substance of a demon, much more into its own body.
28:96
再者,那受了冤屈的靈魂竟去與那冤屈他的人合作,這是毫無道理的;
And otherwise it would have no reason that the soul which had been wronged should work together with him who had wronged it;
28:97
nor that a man should be able to change an incorporeal power into another substance.
28:98
因為就連在有形體的事上這也是不可能的,人斷不能把人的身體變成驢的身體;
For if in the case of bodies this is impossible, and one could not make a man's body into an ass's;
28:99
much more in the case of the invisible soul is this impossible, and no one could have the power to transfer it into the substance of a demon.
28:100
So that these are the sayings of drunken old women, and bugbears for children.
28:101
For it is not possible that a soul, once torn away from the body, should thereafter wander about here.
28:102
因為「義人的靈魂在神的手中」;
For 'the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God';
28:103
義人的靈魂既是如此,孩童的靈魂也是如此;
and if the souls of the righteous, so also those of the children;
28:104
and the souls of sinners also are straightway led away from hence.
28:105
這由拉撒路與那財主的事上便可看得明白;
And this is plain from the case of Lazarus and the rich man;
28:106
and elsewhere too Christ says,
28:107
'This night they require thy soul of thee.'
28:108
靈魂一旦離開身體,就不可能在這世上四處遊蕩;
And it is not possible for a soul, having gone out of the body, to wander about here;
28:109
因為我們既行走在自己熟悉、認得的地上,又披戴著身體,當我們走一條陌生的路時,若沒有人牽引我們的手,尚且不知道該往哪裡去;
for if, walking upon the earth that is familiar and known to us, and clothed with a body, when we journey by an unaccustomed road we know not which way to go unless we have one to lead us by the hand;
28:110
how shall the soul, once torn from the body and gone forth from all its familiar surroundings, know whither it must go without one to guide it? And from many other quarters likewise one may perceive that it is not possible for a soul, once gone forth, to remain here.
28:111
And Paul says, 'To depart and to be with Christ is far better.'
28:112
And concerning the patriarch too the Scripture says:
28:113
'And he was gathered to his fathers, having been nourished into a good old age.'
28:114
But that not even the souls of sinners are able to linger here, hear the rich man entreating much on this account, yet not obtaining his request.
28:115
For had it been possible, he would himself have come and announced the things that had taken place yonder.
28:116
Whence it is plain that, after their departure from this world, souls are led away to a certain region, no longer having power to return, but awaiting that fearful day.
28:117
But should someone ask, Wherefore did Christ do the very thing the demons requested, permitting them to depart into the herd of swine? To this we would reply that He did this not in compliance with them, but ordering many things thereby.
28:118
其一,是要教導那些從那些邪惡暴君手下得釋放的人,明白那些謀害他們者所加害之大;
One thing, to teach those who had been delivered from those wicked tyrants the greatness of the injury of the beings that plotted against them;
28:119
其二,是要眾人都曉得:若非祂親自准許,鬼魔連豬也不敢冒犯;
another, that all might learn that the demons dare not lay hold even of swine, unless He Himself permit;
28:120
third, that they would have wrought things harder than what they did to the swine upon those men, had they not, even amid their calamity, enjoyed much of God's providence.
28:121
For that they hate us more than the brute beasts is surely plain to everyone.
28:122
So that they who spared not the swine, but in one instant of time cast them all headlong down, would much rather have wrought these things upon the men whom they held, leading and driving them into desert places, had not, even in the very tyranny, God's care been great, curbing and restraining their further onrush.
28:123
Whence it is plain that there is no one who does not enjoy the providence of God.
28:124
And if not all alike, nor in one and the same manner, this too is a very great kind of providence.
28:125
For the working of providence is shown forth precisely in what is profitable to each.
28:126
除了上述之外,我們還從中學到另一件事,就是祂不僅普遍地眷顧眾人,也各別地眷顧每一個人;
And besides what has been said, we learn yet another thing from this, namely that He provides not only for all in common, but also for each individually;
28:127
which He also declared in the case of the disciples, saying:
28:128
'But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.'
28:129
And from these very demoniacs too one might clearly discern this, seeing that they would long ago have been choked to death, had they not enjoyed much care from above.
28:130
For this reason, then, He permitted them to depart into the herd of swine, and also that those who dwelt in those regions might learn His power.
28:131
因為在祂的名廣為人知之處,祂並不如此大加彰顯;
For where His name was widely known, He did not display it so greatly;
28:132
but where no one knew Him, but they still lay in insensibility, He caused His miracles to shine forth, so as to draw them to the knowledge of God through Himself.
28:133
For that those who inhabited that city were insensible people is plain from the outcome.
28:134
For whereas they ought to have worshipped and marvelled at His power, they instead sent Him away, and 'besought Him to depart from their borders.'
28:135
But wherefore did the demons destroy the swine? Everywhere they are eager to cast men into despair, and everywhere they rejoice in destruction.
28:136
至少魔鬼在約伯的事上也是這樣行的;
This at least the devil also did in the case of Job;
28:137
然而在那裡神也是准許了的;
and yet there too God permitted it;
28:138
but not there either in compliance with the devil, rather willing to render His own servant more illustrious, and to cut off from the demon every pretext of shamelessness, and to turn back upon his own head the things done against the righteous man.
28:139
Since now too the very opposite of what these desired has come to pass.
28:140
For both was the power of Christ brilliantly proclaimed, and the wickedness of the demons—from which He had delivered those held in their grip—was more clearly shown forth, and that they are not even lords to touch swine unless the God of all permit.
28:141
But if anyone should take these things in a higher, anagogical sense, there is nothing to prevent it.
28:142
namely, to know clearly that swinish men are easy prey to the workings of the demons.
28:143
只要遭受這些事的人仍是人,他們往往還能夠勝過;
And so long as those who suffer these things are still men, they are often able even to get the upper hand;
28:144
but if they become wholly swine, they are not merely possessed, but are also cast headlong down.
28:145
And in another way too, lest anyone suppose that what happened was mere play-acting, but that he might believe clearly that the demons had gone out, this is made manifest from the death of the swine.
28:146
But mark also His gentleness together with His power.
28:147
因為那地方的居民既蒙了這樣的恩惠,卻反倒趕逐祂,祂並不抗拒,乃是退去,撇下那些自表為配不得祂教訓的人,卻把那些從鬼魔得釋放的人,並那些牧豬的人,賜給他們作教師,好叫他們從這些人得知一切所發生的事;
For when, having received such benefits, the inhabitants of that country were driving Him away, He did not resist, but withdrew, and left those who had shown themselves unworthy of His teaching, giving as teachers to them those delivered from the demons, and also the swineherds, so that from them they might learn all that had taken place;
28:148
and He Himself, having withdrawn, leaves the fear yet flourishing among them.
28:149
For the magnitude of the loss spread abroad the report of what had happened, and the event took firm hold of their understanding.
28:150
And from many quarters voices were borne along, proclaiming the marvel of the miracle—from those who had been healed, from those who had been drowned, from the owners of the swine, from the men who tended them.
28:151
One may see these things happening even now, and many demoniacs among the tombs, whom nothing restrains from their frenzy—not iron, not chain, not a multitude of men, not exhortation, not admonition, not fear, not threat, nor anything else of the kind.
28:152
因為凡放縱情慾、對一切肉體都癲狂追逐的人,與被鬼附的人毫無分別;
For indeed, whenever a man is unchaste, all agog after every body, he differs in nothing from one demon-possessed;
28:153
but he goes about naked like that other, clothed indeed in garments, yet stripped of the true covering, and bared of the glory that befits him, cutting himself not with stones, but with sins harder than many stones.
28:154
Who then shall be able to bind such a man? Who to stay him from his unseemly, frenzied conduct—never coming to himself, but ever haunting the tombs? For such are the haunts of harlots, full of much stench, full of much corruption.
28:155
至於那貪財的人呢?他豈不也是如此?誰能有力量將他捆住?那日日的懼怕與威嚇、勸勉與忠告,豈能捆住他?他卻將這一切捆索都掙斷;
But what of the covetous man? Is he not such a one? For who shall ever have strength to bind him? Do not daily fears and threats, exhortations and counsels? But all these bonds he bursts asunder;
28:156
若有人來要使他得釋放,他反倒懇求人不要使他得釋放,因為他把不在折磨之中當作最大的折磨;
and if anyone come to set him free, he adjures him not to set him free, accounting it the greatest torment not to be in torment;
28:157
還有甚麼比這人更可憐的呢?因為那鬼雖然藐視人,卻仍順服基督的命令,迅速從那身體跳離而去;
than whom what could be more wretched? For that demon, even though he despised men, yet yielded to the command of Christ, and speedily leaped away from the body;
28:158
but this man yields not even to the command.
28:159
看哪,他天天聽祂說:「你們不能又事奉神,又事奉瑪門」,並聽祂以地獄和無可救治的刑罰相威嚇,他卻不肯聽從;
Behold, at any rate, day by day he hears Him saying, 'Ye cannot serve God and mammon,' and threatening hell and irremediable punishments, and he is not persuaded;
28:160
not that he is stronger than Christ, but that Christ does not bring us to soberness against our will.
28:161
For this reason such men dwell as it were in deserts, even though they be in the midst of cities.
28:162
For who in his right mind would choose to consort with such men? For my own part, I would rather consent to dwell with ten thousand demoniacs than with one man sick of this disease.
28:163
And that I err not in saying this is plain from what each of the two suffers.
28:164
因為這等人把毫未虧負他們的人當作仇敵,甚至想把自由的人擄為奴隸,並以千般禍患圍困他;
For these men account as an enemy him who has done them no wrong, and desire even to take as a slave one who is free, and beset him with a thousand ills;
28:165
but the demoniacs do nothing of this sort, rather they turn the disease upon themselves.
28:166
這等人傾覆許多家庭,使神的名受褻瀆,成為城市以至於全天下的禍患;
And these overturn many houses, and cause the name of God to be blasphemed, and are a plague to the city and to the whole inhabited world;
28:167
but those troubled by demons are rather worthy of pity and of tears.
28:168
後者所行的多半是在麻木無知之中;
And the latter do most of their deeds in insensibility;
28:169
but the former rave with deliberate reasoning, playing the bacchant in the midst of cities, and mad with some strange new madness.
28:170
For what such thing do all the demoniacs work as Judas dared, displaying the utmost transgression? And all who emulate him, like fierce wild beasts that have escaped from their cage, throw the cities into uproar, with none to restrain them.
28:171
其實這等人四面也都圍著捆索;
For bonds are set about these men too on every side;
28:172
如審判官的可畏、律法的威嚇、眾人的定罪,以及比這些更多的別的捆索;
such as the fear of the judges, the threat of the laws, the condemnation of the many, and many others more than these;
28:173
but nevertheless, bursting through all these too, they turn everything upside down.
28:174
And if anyone were to take these bonds entirely from them, then would he clearly know that the demon within them is far fiercer and more raving than the one that has now gone out.
28:175
但既然此事行不通,我們姑且在言語上如此設想,把他一切的鎖鏈都除去;
But since this cannot be, let us for the present suppose it in argument, and strip off from him all his chains;
28:176
and then shall we clearly perceive his glaring madness.
28:177
但當我們揭開這野獸時,你不要懼怕牠;
But fear not the beast when we shall have unveiled it;
28:178
for the scene is in the argument, the reality is not in the thing itself.
28:179
那麼,就設想有這樣一個人,眼中噴出火來,通體黝黑,兩肩上各懸垂著一條蛇代替手臂;
Let there be, then, a certain man discharging fire from his eyes, black, having serpents dangling from either shoulder in place of hands;
28:180
又設想他有一張口,口中不是牙齒,乃是釘著鋒利的刀劍,舌頭之處也不是舌頭,乃是湧出毒液與致命毒藥的泉源;
and let him have also a mouth with sharp swords fixed in it in place of teeth, and in place of a tongue a fountain gushing up with poison and deadly venom;
28:181
再給他一個比任何火爐更能吞噬的肚腹,把投入其中的一切盡都耗盡;
Give him too a belly more wasteful than any furnace, consuming everything that is cast into it;
28:182
又讓他的雙腳生翅,比任何火焰都更迅疾;
and let his feet be winged and swifter than any flame;
28:183
又讓他的臉面由狗與狼塑成;
and let his face be fashioned out of dog and wolf;
28:184
又讓他發不出人的聲音,只發出刺耳、令人厭惡而可怖的聲響;
and let him utter nothing human, but something jarring and loathsome and terrifying;
28:185
and let him hold fire also in his hands.
28:186
或許我所說的這些在你們看來很可怕;
Perhaps what has been said seems frightful to you;
28:187
然而我們尚未按他真正的本相把他描繪出來;
but we have not yet portrayed him according to his true worth;
28:188
for besides these things others too must be added.
28:189
For let him also slaughter those he meets, devour them, and fasten upon their very flesh.
28:190
But far more grievous than even this is the lover of money, who falls upon all like Hades, swallowing up all men, going about as the common enemy of the human race.
28:191
For he wishes that no man should exist, so that he alone may possess all things.
28:192
而他甚至不止於此;乃是當他以其貪慾毀滅了眾人之後,還渴望連大地的本體也一併消除,並想望見它化為黃金;
And not even here does he stop; but when he has destroyed all men by his lust, he desires also to make away with the very substance of the earth, and to behold it turned into gold;
28:193
and not the earth only, but mountains too, and glens, and springs, and in a word all things that appear.
28:194
And that you may learn that we have not yet set forth his madness, let there be no one to accuse or to overawe him; but for the moment take away by our discourse the fear that comes from the laws, and you shall see him snatch up a sword, and make away with all, and spare no one—neither friend, nor kinsman, nor brother, nor even the very one who begot him.
28:195
或者說,此處甚至根本不需要假設;
Or rather, there is no need here even of a supposition;
28:196
but let us ask him whether he does not continually frame such imaginings within himself, and in thought fall upon and destroy all men—friends, and kinsmen, and even the very ones who begot him.
28:197
或者說,甚至連問都不必;
Or rather, there is no need even to ask;
28:198
for all know that those held fast by this disease are burdened even by a father's old age, and reckon that which is sweet and desirable to all—the having of children—to be heavy and grievous.
28:199
Many at least have for this reason even purchased barrenness, and maimed nature, not by making away with children after they were born, but by not suffering them to come into being at all.
28:200
所以,倘若我們如此描繪那貪財之人,你們不必詫異(因為他遠比我們所描述的更為惡劣);
Marvel not, then, if we have thus portrayed the lover of money (for he is far worse than the things we have described);
28:201
but let us consider how we may deliver him from the demon.
28:202
那麼我們要怎樣救他呢?就是要叫他清楚明白,貪愛錢財恰恰最是攔阻他所追求的這件事——就是攔阻他聚斂錢財;
How then shall we deliver him? If he should learn plainly that the love of money is most of all opposed to this very thing—namely, to the procuring of wealth;
28:203
因為那些貪圖小利的人,反倒蒙受重大的虧損;
for those who wish to gain little things undergo great losses;
28:204
whence indeed a proverb also has been coined upon this very point.
28:205
Many at any rate, wishing often to lend at high interest, in their expectation of gain did not scrutinize those who received the loans, and lost, together with the interest, their whole principal as well.
28:206
Again, others, having fallen into perils, and being unwilling to part with a little, lost their life together with their substance.
28:207
Again, when it was in their power to purchase either profitable offices or some other such thing, by being niggardly they lost the whole.
28:208
For since they know not how to sow, but have practised only ever to reap, they continually fall short even of the harvest.
28:209
For no one is able to reap for ever, even as neither to gain for ever.
28:210
Since, then, they are unwilling to spend, they know not how to gain either.
28:211
然而,即便他須要娶妻,仍舊要遭遇同樣的事;
But even if he must take a wife, again he undergoes this same thing;
28:212
因為他或是受了欺哄,娶了貧窮的女子而非富有的;
for either he was deceived, taking a poor woman instead of a wealthy one;
28:213
or, having brought in a rich one, laden with countless faults, he underwent a yet greater loss.
28:214
For it is not abundance, but virtue, that produces wealth.
28:215
For what profit is there in wealth, when she is extravagant and profligate, and carries all away more violently than the wind? And what, if she be wanton, and draws to herself countless lovers? And what, if she be a drunkard? Will she not speedily make her husband poorer than all men? And men not only marry, but also make their purchases perilously, being led by their great lust to busy themselves not with the excellent among the slaves, but with the cheap.
28:216
Reckoning up, therefore, all these things (for as yet you are not able to hear the discourses concerning hell and the kingdom), and calling to mind the losses which you have often undergone from the love of money—in loans, in purchases, in marriages, in patronages, and in all the rest—desist from loving money.
28:217
因為你們這樣行,便既能在今生平安穩妥地度日,又能稍加長進,得聽關乎屬天智慧的言論,並得舉目仰望祂,得見公義的日頭,又得著祂所應許的美福;
For thus you will be able both to live the present life with security, and, advancing a little, to hear also the discourses concerning heavenly wisdom, and, looking straight up unto Him, to behold the Sun of righteousness, and to attain unto the good things promised by Him;
28:218
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the might unto the ages of ages. Amen.
