'While He was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and His brethren stood without, seeking to speak with Him.'
44:2
'Behold, Thy mother and Thy brethren stand without, seeking to speak with Thee.' But He answered and said to him that told Him: 'Who is My mother, and who are My brethren?' And stretching forth His hand toward His disciples, He said:
44:3
'Behold My mother and My brethren.' (1)
44:4
What I was saying a while ago, that in the absence of virtue all things are superfluous, this is now also shown with great abundance.
44:5
因為我曾說過:若沒有良善的心志,年齡、天性、隱居於曠野以及諸如此類的事都無益處;
For I was saying that age, and nature, and dwelling in the wilderness, and all such things are of no profit when a good disposition is lacking;
44:6
but today we learn something yet further, that not even to have borne Christ in the womb and to have brought forth that wondrous birth has any profit, when virtue is lacking.
44:7
And this is especially clear from what follows.
44:8
'For while He was yet speaking to the multitudes,' it says, someone said to Him that 'Thy mother and Thy brethren are seeking Thee.'
44:9
「誰是我的母親?誰是我的弟兄?」祂這樣說,並非以祂的母親為恥,也非否認那生祂的;
'Who is My mother, and who are My brethren?' Now He said this, not being ashamed of His mother, nor denying her that bore Him;
44:10
因為祂若以為恥,就根本不會經過那母腹了;
for had He been ashamed, He would not even have passed through that womb;
44:11
but He was making it plain that this profited her nothing, unless she did all that was required.
44:12
因為她所嘗試去做的,實出於過度的虛榮;
For indeed what she attempted sprang from superfluous vanity;
44:13
因為她想向眾人顯示,她對這兒子有權柄、有掌管之權,卻還未對祂懷有任何崇高的想法;
for she wished to display to the people that she had authority and control over her Son, forming as yet no lofty conception concerning Him;
44:14
wherefore also she approached unseasonably.
44:15
Observe therefore both her folly and theirs.
44:16
本來他們應當進去,與眾人一同聆聽,或者若不願意如此,就等祂講完了話,然後才前來;
For whereas they ought to have entered and listened with the crowd, or, if they did not wish this, to have waited for Him to conclude His discourse, and then to have approached;
44:17
yet they call Him outside, and do this before all, displaying superfluous vanity, and wishing to show that with great authority they lay their commands upon Him.
44:18
而福音書作者也顯出對此加以責備;
And this the Evangelist too is shown to censure;
44:19
for hinting at this very thing, he spoke thus:
44:20
'While He was yet speaking to the multitudes.'
44:21
難道沒有別的時機嗎?難道不能私下與祂交談嗎?他們究竟又想說什麼呢?因為若是關乎真理的教義,就當在公開場合提出,當著眾人的面說,使其他人也能得益處;
For was there no other opportunity? Was it not possible to converse with Him in private? And what did they even wish to say? For if it was concerning the doctrines of the truth, they ought to have added these in public, and to have spoken before all, so that the others too might profit;
44:22
but if it was concerning other matters that pertained to themselves, they ought not so to have pressed upon Him.
44:23
For if He did not permit a man to bury his father, in order that the following of Him might not be interrupted, much more ought He not to have broken off His public discourse for the sake of matters that in no way concerned it.
44:24
由此可見,他們這樣做只是出於虛榮;
Whence it is plain that they did this out of vainglory alone;
44:25
which John also, making it plain, said, that 'Neither did His brethren believe in Him;'
44:26
他還記載了他們那充滿愚昧的話語,說他們拉祂上耶路撒冷去,別無他故,只為他們自己可以從祂的神蹟中博取榮耀;
and he reports their words too, full of much senselessness, saying that they were dragging Him to Jerusalem, for no other reason than that they themselves might reap glory from His signs;
44:27
'For if Thou doest these things,' they say, 'show Thyself to the world;'
44:28
'for no one does anything in secret, and yet himself seeks to be known openly;'
44:29
when He also rebuked them, blaming their carnal disposition.
44:30
For since the Jews reproached Him and said:
44:31
'Is not this the carpenter's son, whose father and mother we know? And are not His brethren here among us?' — wishing to repel the meanness derived from His lineage, they summoned Him to a display of the signs.
44:32
為此,祂便拒絕他們,要醫治他們的病症;
For this reason He repels them, wishing to heal their malady;
44:33
since if He had wished to deny His mother, it was then, when they reproached Him, that He would have denied her.
44:34
But now He is seen to take such forethought for her, as even at the very cross to commit her to the disciple most beloved of all, and to lay many charges upon him concerning her.
44:35
But it is not now that He does this, in His care for her and His brethren.
44:36
For since they gave heed to Him as to a mere man, and were vainglorious, He casts out the disease, not insulting them, but setting them right.
44:37
但你不要只細察那含著適度責備的話語,也要細察那些弟兄的失禮與大膽,就是他們所膽敢做的,以及那責備他們的是誰;
But do not you scrutinize only the words, which contain a measured rebuke, but also the impropriety and boldness of the brethren, which they dared, and who it was that rebuked them;
44:38
祂不是一個人,乃是神的獨生子;
not a man, but the only-begotten Son of God;
44:39
以及祂責備時懷著怎樣的心意;
and with what intent He rebuked;
44:40
因為祂並非要使他們陷於絕望,乃是要救他們脫離那最為專橫的病症,並漸漸地引他們進入對祂合宜的認識,說服他們相信:祂不僅是她的兒子,更是她的主;
for it was not that He wished to drive them to despair, but to deliver them from that most tyrannical malady, and little by little to lead them into a fitting conception concerning Him, and to persuade them that He was not her Son only, but also her Lord;
44:41
and you will see that the rebuke was exceedingly becoming to Him, and profitable to her, and withal that it contained much gentleness.
44:42
For neither did He say, 'Go, tell My mother, Thou art not My mother,' but He directs His answer to him that had spoken, saying:
44:43
'Who is My mother?' — establishing yet another thing along with what has been said.
44:44
What then is this? That neither those nor others, trusting in kinship, should neglect virtue. For if being His mother profits her nothing, unless that other thing be present, hardly shall any other be saved by reason of kinship. For there is one nobility alone, to do the will of God.
44:45
This manner of nobility is better and more authoritative than that.
44:46
所以我們既知道這些事,就不要因有聲名顯赫的兒女而自高,若我們沒有他們的德行;
Knowing these things then, let us not be high-minded because of illustrious children, if we have not their virtue;
44:47
nor because of noble fathers, unless we be of like character with them.
44:48
For it is possible both that he who begat should not be a father, and that he who begat not should be one.
44:49
For this very reason also, in another place, when a certain woman said:
44:50
'Blessed is the womb that bore Thee, and the breasts which Thou didst suck;'
44:51
He did not say, 'The womb did not bear Me,' nor 'I did not suck at breasts;'
44:52
'Yea rather, blessed are they that do the will of My Father.'
44:53
你看見沒有?祂前後都不否認那按本性而來的血緣關係,卻加上那按德行而來的關係。先鋒約翰說:「毒蛇的種類,不要自以為可以說,我們有亞伯拉罕為祖宗」,他所要表明的並不是他們按本性不是出於亞伯拉罕,乃是說:若他們沒有那從行事為人而來的親緣,那麼身為亞伯拉罕的後裔對他們毫無益處;
Do you see how, up and down, He does not deny the natural kinship, but adds that according to virtue? And the Forerunner too, when he said, 'Ye offspring of vipers, think not to say, We have Abraham to our father,' shows not this, that they were not of Abraham according to nature, but that it profited them nothing to be of Abraham, unless they had the kinship that comes from manner of life;
44:54
which Christ also, making it plain, said:
44:55
'If ye were the children of Abraham, ye would do the works of Abraham.'
44:56
He was not depriving them of their kinship according to the flesh, but training them to seek out that kinship which is greater and more authoritative than this.
44:57
祂在此處所要確立的正是這一點,只是用了較不令人難堪、且更為諧和的方式;
This very thing He here establishes also, but in a manner less burdensome and more harmonious;
44:58
for indeed His word was addressed to His mother.
44:59
For neither did He say, 'She is not my mother, nor are those my brethren, because they do not do my will;'
44:60
祂也沒有下判決、加以定罪;
nor did He pronounce sentence and condemn them;
44:61
but rather He still left them masters of their own will, speaking with the gentleness that becomes Him.
44:62
For 'whosoever,' saith He, 'shall do the will of my Father, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.'
44:63
So that if they wish to be such, let them come by this way.
44:64
And when the woman cried out, saying, 'Blessed is the womb that bare Thee,' He said not, 'She is not my mother,' but, 'If she wishes to be blessed, let her do the will of my Father.'
44:65
For such a one is both brother, and sister, and mother.
44:66
See to what a height He raises the one who follows after this way.
44:67
How many women have counted that holy Virgin blessed, and the womb that bore Him, and have prayed to become such mothers, and to give up all things!
44:68
那麼還有甚麼攔阻呢?看哪,祂已為我們開闢了一條寬闊的道路,不但婦人可以,連男子也可以進入這樣的品級;
What then is there to hinder? For behold, He hath cut for us a broad road, and it is possible not for women only, but also for men, to come into such a rank;
44:69
nay, rather, into one yet far greater.
44:70
For this makes one a mother far more than those pangs of childbirth.
44:71
So that if that was accounted blessed, much more is this, inasmuch as it is also the more authoritative.
44:72
所以你不要只是一味地渴慕;
Do not therefore merely desire it;
44:73
but also walk with all diligence in the road that leads thee to the object of thy desire.
44:74
Having said these things, then, He went out of the house.
44:75
Sawest thou how He both rebuked, and yet did the very thing they longed for? This same thing He does also at the marriage feast.
44:76
因為在那裡,祂也曾在她不合時宜地求問時責備了她,然而祂並未拒絕;
For there too He rebuked her when she asked unseasonably, and yet He did not refuse;
44:77
by the former correcting her weakness, and by the latter displaying His affection towards His mother.
44:78
So here too He both healed the disease of vainglory, and rendered the fitting honour to His mother, even though she was asking unseasonably.
44:79
For 'on that day,' saith He, 'Jesus went out of the house, and sat by the sea side.'
44:80
'For if ye wish,' saith He, 'to see and to hear, behold, I go forth and I discourse.'
44:81
For since He had wrought many signs, He again affords the benefit that comes from teaching.
44:82
the benefit that comes from teaching.
44:83
And He sits by the sea, fishing and drawing in with His net those who are on the land.
44:84
祂坐在海邊並非沒有緣故;
And He sat by the sea not without purpose;
44:85
and this very thing the Evangelist has set down, hinting at a deeper meaning.
44:86
For to show that He did this out of a wish to gather the audience with exactness, and so as to leave none behind His back, but to have all facing Him, 'And there were gathered together unto Him,' saith he, 'great multitudes, so that He went into a boat, and sat;'
44:87
'and all the multitude stood on the shore.'
44:88
And having sat down there, He speaks by parables.
44:89
'And He spake unto them,' saith he, 'many things in parables.'
44:90
然而在山上祂卻不是這樣行,也沒有用如此眾多的比喻來編織祂的言論;
And yet on the mountain He did not so, nor did He weave His discourse with so many parables;
44:91
因為那時只有一般的群眾和未經雕琢的平民百姓;
for then there were only multitudes and an unartificial common folk;
44:92
but here there were also scribes and Pharisees.
44:93
But do thou consider for me which parable He speaks first, and how Matthew sets them down in due order.
44:94
Which then does He speak first? The very one that it was most fitting to speak first, the one that makes the hearer more attentive.
44:95
For since He was about to discourse in a riddling manner, He first rouses up the mind of the hearers by the parable.
44:96
For this reason another Evangelist also says that He rebuked them because they did not understand, saying,
44:97
'How know ye not this parable?' Yet not for this reason only does He speak in parables, but also that He may render His discourse more vivid, and lodge the memory of it more deeply, and bring the things spoken of before their very eyes.
44:98
In this way the prophets also do.
44:99
What then is the parable? 'Behold,' saith He, 'a sower went forth to sow.'
44:100
Whence went He forth, who is present everywhere, who fills all things? Or how went He forth? Not in place, but by a relation and dispensation towards us, becoming nearer to us through His clothing Himself in the flesh.
44:101
For since we were not able to enter in, our sins walling off our entrance, He Himself comes forth to us.
44:102
祂出來又是為了甚麼呢?是要毀滅那滿是荊棘的土地嗎?是要懲罰那些園戶嗎?絕不是;
And wherefore did He come forth? To destroy the land that was full of thorns? To punish the husbandmen? By no means;
44:103
but to till it and to tend it, and to sow the word of godliness.
44:104
因為祂在此以「種子」指教訓;
For by 'seed' He here means the teaching;
44:105
以「田地」指人的靈魂;
and by 'field,' the souls of men;
44:106
What then comes of this seed? Three parts perish, and one is saved.
44:107
'And as He sowed,' saith He, 'some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up.'
44:108
He said not that He cast them away, but that they fell.
44:109
'But others upon the rock, where they had not much earth;'
44:110
'and forthwith they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth;'
44:111
'but when the sun was risen, they were scorched, and because they had no root, they withered away.'
44:112
'and the thorns sprang up and choked them.'
44:113
'But others upon the good ground;'
44:114
'and it yielded fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.'
44:115
'He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.'
44:116
And not even this in equal measure, but here too there is much difference.
44:117
And He said these things, making it plain that He discoursed to all with an ungrudging bounty.
44:118
因為正如撒種的人並不分別擺在他面前的田地,而是單純地、毫不揀選地撒下種子;
For just as the sower does not distinguish the field that lies before him, but simply and without discrimination casts his seeds;
44:119
so too He Himself distinguishes not rich nor poor, not wise nor unwise, not slothful nor diligent, not brave nor cowardly, but discoursed to all, fulfilling His own part, even though He foreknew what should come to pass.
44:120
「我為它所當作的,還有甚麼是我沒有作的呢?」眾先知講到這民時,實在是把他們比作葡萄園;
'What was there yet to do for it, that I have not done?' And the prophets indeed discourse concerning the people as of a vine;
44:121
for 'My beloved,' saith He, 'had a vineyard;'
44:122
and, 'He brought a vine out of Egypt;'
44:123
What does He thereby signify? That the obedience will now be swift and easier, and will straightway give its fruit.
44:124
And when thou hearest that 'The sower went forth to sow,' do not suppose it to be a mere repetition of words.
44:125
因為撒種的人常常也為別的事出去,或是為翻鬆休耕之地,或是為除去惡草,或是為拔起荊棘,或是為料理其他這類的事;
For the sower often goes out for some other purpose as well: either to break up the fallow ground, or to cut out the noxious weeds, or to pull up the thorns, or to attend to some other such task;
44:126
but he went out to sow.
44:127
那麼,請告訴我,種子大部分是從何處失落的呢?不是因著那撒種的人,而是因著承受種子的土地;
Whence then, tell me, was the greater part of the seed lost? Not through the sower, but through the ground that received it;
44:128
that is, through the soul that did not give heed.
44:129
And why does He not say that some of the seed the slothful received,
44:130
and some the rich, and they choked it,
44:131
and some the frivolous, and they betrayed it? He does not wish to press upon them too severely, lest He cast them into despair, but leaves the reproof to the conscience of His hearers.
44:132
遭受這樣結局的不僅是種子,還有那撒下的網;
And not only the seed suffered this, but the net also;
44:133
for that too brought up many things that were useless.
44:134
He tells this parable to anoint His disciples for the contest and to instruct them, so that even if those who perish are more than those who receive the word, they should not fall into dejection.
44:135
因為這事實在也發生在主自己身上;
For indeed this very thing came to pass in the case of the Master Himself;
44:136
and He who fully foreknew that these things would be so did not on that account desist from sowing.
44:137
有人問說:把種撒在荊棘上、磐石上、路旁,這能有甚麼道理呢?就實際的種子與土地而言,確實沒有道理;
And what reason could there be, one asks, for sowing upon the thorns, upon the rock, upon the path? In the case of literal seeds and soil there would indeed be no reason;
44:138
but in the case of souls and of teachings this deserves much praise.
44:139
For the farmer might reasonably be blamed for doing this,
44:140
因為磐石不可能變成土壤,路也不可能不再是路,荊棘也不可能不再是荊棘;
since it is not possible for the rock to become soil, nor for the path to cease being a path, nor for the thorns to cease being thorns;
44:141
but with rational beings it is not so.
44:142
因為磐石可以被改變,成為肥沃的土壤;
For it is possible for the rock to be changed and to become rich soil;
44:143
路也可以不再被踐踏,不再任由一切過路人踩踏,反而成為豐腴的田地;
and for the path no longer to be trodden down, nor to lie open to all who pass by, but to become fertile land;
44:144
and for the thorns to be done away, and the seeds to enjoy great security.
44:145
For if it had not been possible, He would not have sown.
44:146
But if the change did not take place in all, this was not through the sower, but through those who were unwilling to be changed.
44:147
因為祂那一面已成就了自己當作的工;
For He on His part has done His own work;
44:148
and if they betrayed what came from Him, He who displayed so great a love for mankind is Himself without blame.
44:149
But consider for me this: that there is not one road to perdition, but many, and differing from one another.
44:150
那好像路旁的,是粗俗、懶惰、疏忽的人;
For those who resemble the path are the coarse, the slothful, and the negligent;
44:151
those on the rock are merely the more feeble.
44:152
For 'He that was sown upon the stony places,' He says, 'this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it;
44:153
只是心裡沒有根,不過是暫時的;
yet hath he no root in himself, but endureth for a season;
44:154
and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he is offended.'
44:155
祂說:「凡聽見真理之道卻不明白的,那惡者就來,把所撒在他心裡的奪了去;
'When any one,' He says, 'heareth the word of truth and understandeth it not, the Evil One cometh, and snatcheth away that which was sown in his heart.
44:156
This is he that was sown by the path.'
44:157
But it is not the same thing for the teaching to wither away when no one is troubling or leveraging against it, and when temptations are pressing upon it.
44:158
But those who resemble the thorns are far more inexcusable than these.
44:159
In order, then, that we may suffer none of these things, let us cover over what is spoken with eagerness and with unceasing remembrance.
44:160
Εἰ γὰρ.
因為縱使魔鬼要奪去,我們卻仍能作主,使它不被奪去;
For even if the devil snatches it away, yet we are masters over whether it be snatched away or not;
44:161
縱使種子枯乾了,這也不是因著炎熱的緣故(因為祂並沒有說它是因炎熱而枯乾,乃是因為沒有根);
and even if the seeds are dried up, this does not come to pass because of the heat (for He did not say that it was withered because of the heat, but because it had no root);
44:162
and even if the words are choked, this is not because of the thorns, but because of those who suffer them to spring up.
44:163
For it is possible, if you will, to hinder this evil growth, and to use wealth as is fitting.
44:164
為此,祂沒有說「這世代」,乃是說「這世代的思慮」;
For this reason He did not say 'the age,' but 'the care of the age;'
44:165
nor 'wealth,' but 'the deceitfulness of wealth.'
44:166
Let us not, then, lay the blame upon the things themselves, but upon the corrupted will.
44:167
因為人是可以既富足又不被迷惑的;
For it is possible both to be rich and not to be deceived;
44:168
and to be in this age, and not to be choked by its anxieties.
44:169
For indeed wealth has two contrary defects:
44:170
其一,是那使人心繃緊並蒙蔽人心的,就是憂慮;
the one, that which strains and darkens the mind, namely anxiety;
44:171
the other, that which makes men softer, namely luxury.
44:172
And well did He say, 'the deceitfulness of wealth.'
44:173
因為凡屬錢財之物都是迷惑;
For all the things of wealth are deceit;
44:174
for they are names only, not resting upon real things.
44:175
For indeed pleasure, and glory, and adornment, and all such things are a kind of phantom, not the truth of realities.
44:176
Having named, then, the modes of perdition, He afterward sets forth the good ground, not permitting them to despair, but giving hope of repentance, and showing that it is possible from the aforesaid conditions to change over into this.
44:177
然而,若土地是好的,撒種的是一位,種子也是一樣的,為何有一百倍的,有六十倍的,有三十倍的呢?這裡的差別又是在於土地的性質;
And yet, if the ground is good, and the sower is one, and the seeds the same, why did one bring forth a hundredfold, another sixty, and another thirty? Here again the difference lies in the nature of the ground;
44:178
for even where the ground is good, there is much difference in it as well.
44:179
You see that He shows the farmer is not the cause,
44:180
也非種子是原因,乃是那承受種子的土地;
nor the seeds, but the ground that receives them;
44:181
and this not through its nature, but through its disposition.
44:182
And here too there is great love for mankind,
44:183
in that He does not require one single measure of virtue, but both accepts the first, and does not cast out the second, and gives place to the third.
44:184
These things He says, so that those who follow Him should not suppose that mere hearing suffices for salvation.
44:185
And why, one asks, did He not also set down the other kinds of wickedness, such as lust of the body, and vainglory? Having spoken of the care of this age and the deceitfulness of wealth, He has set down all of them.
44:186
因為虛榮以及其餘的一切,都是屬乎這世代與錢財的迷惑的;
For indeed vainglory too, and all the rest, belong to this age and to the deceitfulness of wealth;
44:187
such as pleasure, and gluttony, and envy, and vainglory, and all such things.
44:188
But He added also the path and the rock, showing that it is not enough merely to be rid of riches, but that one must also practice the rest of virtue.
44:189
For what profit is it, if you are free from riches, but are unmanly and soft? And again, what if you are not unmanly, but are slothful and negligent about hearing? For no single part suffices for our salvation, but we need first an exact hearing and unceasing remembrance, then courage, then a despising of riches and a release from all worldly things.
44:190
正是為此,祂把這一項排在那一項之前,因為這乃是首先所需要的(因為人若未曾聽見,怎能相信呢?照樣,我們若不留心所講的話,也就無法學會當行的事);
For it is on this account that He places the one before the other, since this is what is needed first (for how shall they believe, if they do not hear? just as we too, if we do not attend to what is spoken, shall not even be able to learn what we ought to do);
44:191
then courage, and the despising of present things.
44:192
Hearing these things, therefore, let us wall ourselves about on every side, attending to what is spoken, and letting our roots go down deep, and purging ourselves of all worldly things.
44:193
但我們若行了其中一些,卻忽略了另一些,就毫無益處;
But if we do some of these things and neglect the others, we shall gain nothing more;
44:194
for even if we do not perish in the one way, yet we perish in the other.
44:195
因為這有何分別呢?我們縱使不是因財富而敗壞,卻因懶惰而敗壞;
For what difference does it make, if we are ruined not through wealth, but through sloth,
44:196
or if not through sloth, yet through cowardice? Since the farmer too, whether he lose his seed in this way or in that, mourns just the same.
44:197
Let us not, then, because we are not destroyed by every kind of way, take comfort from this; rather let us grieve by whatever manner we may be destroyed.
44:198
And let us burn up the thorns; for indeed it chokes the word.
44:199
for indeed it chokes the word.
44:200
The rich know this—those who are useful not only for these matters, but not even for any others.
44:201
因為他們既已成為享樂的奴隸與俘虜,就連對城邦公務也毫無用處;
For having become slaves and captives of pleasures, they are useless even for civic affairs;
44:202
and if for those, how much more for the affairs of the heavens.
44:203
For indeed a twofold harm comes hence to their reasonings, both from luxury and from anxiety.
44:204
因為這其中每一樣單獨就足以使船沉沒;
For each of these by itself is enough to sink the vessel;
44:205
but when both run together, consider how great the surge that arises.
44:206
And do not marvel that He called luxury 'thorns.'
44:207
因為你自己既沉醉於這情慾之中,便對此茫然無知;
For you indeed are ignorant of it, being drunk with the passion;
44:208
but those who are in health know that it pricks more than a thorn, and that luxury wastes the soul more than care, and inflicts more grievous pains on both body and soul.
44:209
For one is not so smitten by care as by surfeit.
44:210
For when sleeplessness, and throbbing of the temples, and heaviness of the head, and pains of the bowels beset such a man, consider by how much these are worse than thorns.
44:211
正如荊棘,無論從何處被抓住,都使握住它的手流血;
And just as thorns, wherever they be grasped, make bloody the hands that hold them,
44:212
奢華享樂也是如此,它傷害腳、手、頭、眼睛,簡言之,傷害一切肢體;
so too luxury injures the feet, and the hands, and the head, and the eyes, and, in a word, all the members;
44:213
and it is dry and fruitless, like the thorn, and it grieves far more grievously than that, and in the vital parts.
44:214
因為它招致不合時的衰老,使感官遲鈍,使理智昏暗,使原本銳利的心眼失明,使身體虛胖鬆軟,令那儲藏之所積聚更多穢物,把一大堆惡疾聚集起來,使重擔更沉,貨載超載過重;
For it brings on untimely old age, and blunts the senses, and darkens the reasoning, and blinds the mind that once saw keenly, and makes the body flabby, rendering the storehouse more abundant in filth, gathering together a great heap of evils, and making the burden heavier and the cargo overweighted;
44:215
whence come also many and continual falls, and frequent shipwrecks.
44:216
請告訴我,你為何要使身體肥胖?難道我們要把你獻祭嗎?難道我們要把你擺上餐桌嗎?你把家禽養肥還算得宜;
For why, tell me, do you fatten the body? Are we to sacrifice you? Are we to set you upon a table? You fatten fowls well;
44:217
or rather, not even those do you fatten well.
44:218
So great an evil is luxury, that it displays its ruin even among the irrational animals.
44:219
For those birds too, when made luxurious, we render useless both to themselves and to us.
44:220
For their excrement becomes undigested, and a more watery putrefaction arises from that fat.
44:221
But those not so fed, but, as one might say, passing their life in fasting and in a moderate diet, laboring and toiling—these are most useful both to themselves and to others, both for food and for all other purposes.
44:222
無論如何,以那樣的牲畜為食的人是更健康的;
At any rate, those who feed on such creatures are the healthier;
44:223
but those who feed on these come to resemble them, becoming sluggish and sickly, and forging for themselves a more grievous bondage.
44:224
因為沒有什麼比奢華享樂對身體更具敵意、更有害的了;
For nothing is so hostile and harmful to the body as luxury;
44:225
nothing so bursts it, and buries it, and destroys it, as debauchery.
44:226
Wherefore one might especially be amazed at their folly on this account also, that they are not willing to show toward themselves even as much thrift as others show in the case of wine-skins.
44:227
因為賣酒的人不容那些皮囊裝進超過所需的量,免得脹裂;
For those who sell wines do not permit the skins to take in more than is needful, lest they burst;
44:228
但這等人卻連對自己那可憐的肚腹,也不肯施以這樣的顧惜;
but these men do not deem their wretched belly worthy even of this forethought;
44:229
but when they have filled and burst it, up to the ears, up to the nostrils, up to the very throat, they cram everything full, contriving thereby a twofold straitness for the breath and for the power that regulates the living creature.
44:230
For was your throat made for this—that up to the very mouth it should be crammed with rotting wine and with the rest of the corruption that fills it? Not for this, O man, but that first and foremost you might sing to God, and send up holy prayers, and read the divine laws, and counsel your neighbors as to what is profitable.
44:231
But you, as though you had received it for this very purpose, do not allow it even a little time to be free for that ministry, but subject it your whole life long to this wicked servitude.
44:232
這正如同一個人,取了一把有金弦、且調得極好的琴,不去在其上彈奏那全然和諧的樂曲,反倒把它埋在許多糞土與污泥之下;
And it is just as if a man, having taken a lyre with golden strings and well tuned, instead of striking out on it the all-harmonious melody, should bury it under much dung and mire;
44:233
and by 'dung' I called not the food, but the luxury, and that great licentiousness.
44:234
For what is beyond the needful is not food, but only mischief.
44:235
因為只有肚腹是為著接納食物而造的;
For the belly alone was made for the reception of food;
44:236
但口、咽喉和舌頭,卻是為著別的、比這些重要得多的用途而造的;
but the mouth, and the throat, and the tongue were made for other purposes far more necessary than these;
44:237
or rather, not even the belly was made for the reception of food simply, but for the reception of food in due measure.
44:238
而肚腹也把這事表明出來,每當我們藉這貪食凌虐它時,它便千百次地向我們高聲抗議;
And this it makes plain, crying out against us times without number, whenever we outrage it through this greed;
44:239
and it not only cries out, but, avenging the wrong, it exacts from us the uttermost penalty.
44:240
它首先懲罰那雙腳,就是那馱著並帶領我們前往那些邪惡宴席的腳;其次,它把那服事它的雙手捆綁起來,以報那雙手獻上如此眾多而豐盛之佳餚的行為;
And first it punishes the feet, which bear and carry us off to those wicked banquets; then it binds together the hands that ministered to it, in return for which they brought forward so many and such viands;
44:241
and many it has even distorted the mouth itself, and the eyes, and the head.
44:242
正如一個家僕,當他被吩咐去做超過他能力的事時,便在絕望中屢屢辱罵那下令的人;
And just as a household servant, when he is enjoined something beyond his power, being driven to desperation often insults the one who gave the command;
44:243
so this too, together with these members, being often forced, destroys and corrupts the very brain itself.
44:244
And this God ordered well, that from immoderation there should come so great a harm, so that when you do not willingly practice self-restraint, at least unwillingly, through fear of so great a corruption, you might learn moderation.
44:245
Knowing these things, then, let us flee luxury, and take care for moderation, that we may both enjoy the health of the body, and, freeing the soul from every sickness, may attain the good things to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and dominion unto the ages of ages.
