But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said unto them:
41:2
'Every kingdom divided against itself shall be laid waste;'
41:3
'and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.'
41:4
若撒但趕逐撒但,就是自相分爭了;
And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself;
41:5
how then shall his kingdom stand? (1)
41:6
And already they had brought this charge, that it is by Beelzebul that He casts out the demons.
41:7
But at that time He did not rebuke them, granting them opportunity both to recognize His power from His many signs, and to learn His greatness from His teaching.
41:8
但因他們仍執意說同樣的話,祂如今便加以責備;
But since they persisted in saying the same things, He now rebukes them as well;
41:9
首先,藉著把他們隱藏的心思揭露出來,顯明祂自己的神性;
first, by this displaying His own Godhead, in bringing their secret thoughts out into the open;
41:10
and secondly, by the very fact of casting out the demons with such ease.
41:11
And yet the accusation itself was exceedingly shameless.
41:12
For as I said, envy does not seek what it may say, but only that it may say something.
41:13
但即便如此,基督仍未輕看他們,反倒以合乎祂身分的溫良為自己辯明,教導我們對仇敵當存溫柔;
But nevertheless, not even so did Christ despise them, but He makes His defence with the gentleness befitting Him, teaching us to be meek toward our enemies;
41:14
and that even if they say such things as we are conscious of in neither ourselves, nor have any reasonable ground at all, we should not be disturbed or troubled, but with all long-suffering render them our account.
41:15
This indeed is what He especially did then also, affording the greatest proof that the things spoken by them were false.
41:16
因為顯出這等溫良,絕不是被鬼附之人所能為的;
For it was not the part of one possessed by a demon to display so great gentleness;
41:17
nor of one possessed to know men's secret thoughts.
41:18
For indeed, both because such a suspicion was exceedingly shameless, and because of their fear of the multitude, they did not even dare to make these charges public, but turned them over in their minds.
41:19
而祂為要顯明祂連那些事也知道,卻不把那控告擺明,也不張揚他們的惡;
But He, showing them that He knew even those things, does not set forth the accusation, nor parade their wickedness;
41:20
rather He brings in the refutation, leaving the conviction to the conscience of those who had spoken.
41:21
For one thing alone was His earnest concern: to profit those who were sinning, not to expose them.
41:22
其實,祂若願意長篇大論,使他們成為笑柄,並且連同這些還要向他們索取極刑的懲罰,本是毫無攔阻的;
And yet, if He had wished to draw out a long discourse, and to make them ridiculous, and along with these things to exact the uttermost penalty of them, there was nothing to hinder Him;
41:23
but nevertheless, passing over all these things, He looked to one thing only: not to make them more contentious, but more forbearing, and thereby better fitted for amendment.
41:24
How then does He defend Himself to them? He says nothing from the Scriptures (for neither did they give heed, but were even about to pervert their meaning), but from the things that commonly happen.
41:25
'For every kingdom,' He says, 'divided against itself, shall not stand;'
41:26
and if a city or house be rent asunder, it is quickly dissolved.
41:27
For external wars do not destroy so much as civil ones.
41:28
這在身體上也是如此;
For this happens in bodies also;
41:29
在一切事上也是如此;
this also in all affairs;
41:30
but for the present He draws His examples from the more familiar cases.
41:31
然而地上還有什麼比一國更強盛的呢?沒有;
And yet what is more powerful than a kingdom upon the earth? Nothing;
41:32
but nevertheless it perishes when it is in sedition.
41:33
But if there He lays the blame on the very magnitude of affairs, as breaking upon itself, what wouldst thou say concerning a city? and what concerning a house? For whether it be something small, or great, if it be in sedition against itself, it perishes.
41:34
If therefore I, having a demon, cast out the demons through him, then there is sedition and battle among the demons, and they stand against one another.
41:35
But if they stand against one another, their strength has perished and is destroyed.
41:36
For if Satan casts out Satan (and He did not say, 'the demons,' showing that there is much concord among them toward one another) — he is therefore, He says, divided against himself.
41:37
但他若分裂了,就變得更軟弱,並且滅亡了;
But if he is divided, he has become weaker, and has perished;
41:38
他若滅亡了,怎能趕出別的鬼來呢?你看這控告何等可笑?何等愚昧?何等自相矛盾?因為決不能是同一群人,一面說他站立得住,一面又說他趕逐眾鬼;
and if he has perished, how can he cast out another? Seest thou how great is the absurdity of the accusation? how great the folly? how great the contradiction? For it is not possible for the same persons both to say that he stands, and that he casts out the demons;
41:39
and to say that for this cause he stands, on account of which he ought reasonably to have been dissolved.
41:40
For not by one manner only always, but by a second and a third, does He dissolve their objections, wishing out of His abundance to silence their shamelessness.
41:41
這也是祂在安息日的事上所行的,把大衛、眾祭司,以及那說「我喜愛憐恤,不喜愛祭祀」的經文,並安息日設立的緣由都提出來;
Which He did also in the matter of the sabbath, bringing forward David, the priests, and the testimony that says, 'I will have mercy, and not sacrifice,' and the reason for which the sabbath came to be;
41:42
for, He says, the sabbath was made for man.
41:43
This same thing He does here also.
41:44
For after the former, He proceeds to a second solution, clearer than the former.
41:45
'For if I,' He says, 'cast out the demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out?' (2)
41:46
Behold here also His gentleness.
41:47
For He did not say, 'My disciples,' nor 'the apostles,'
41:48
乃是說「你們的子弟」,好叫他們若肯回到與那些人同樣的高尚,就可從此得著大好的憑藉;
but, 'your sons,' that if they should be willing to return to the same nobility as those, they might from this take great occasion;
41:49
but if they should be unreasonable and persist in the same things, they might no longer have even a shameless pretext to allege.
41:50
And what He says is of this sort:
41:51
使徒是靠著誰趕鬼呢?他們既已從祂領受了權柄,早就在趕鬼了,而這些人卻毫不控告他們;
By whom do the apostles cast them out? For indeed they were already casting them out, because of having received authority from Him, and these men brought no charge against them;
41:52
for they were contending not with the facts, but with His person only.
41:53
Wishing therefore to show that the things said were merely of envy against Himself, He brings the apostles into the midst.
41:54
For if I cast them out in this way, much more do those who have received the authority from me.
41:55
But nevertheless you have said no such thing against them.
41:56
How then do you charge me — who am the cause to them also of the things that are done — with these things, while acquitting them of the accusations? Yet this shall not free you from punishment, but shall condemn you the more.
41:57
They themselves shall be your judges.
41:58
For when, being of you, and having been trained in these things, they both believe me and obey me, it is plain that they will also condemn those who both do and say the contrary.
41:59
'But if I cast out the demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come upon you.'
41:60
What is 'the kingdom'? My coming.
41:61
See how again He draws them and heals them, and attracts them to the knowledge of Himself, and shows that they are warring against their own good things, and contending against their own salvation.
41:62
祂說:你們本當歡喜踴躍,因為那偉大而不可言喻的事已經來到,把先知古時所歌詠的都賜下了,你們福樂的時候也已臨近;
For it behoved you, He says, to rejoice and to leap for joy, that those great and unutterable things had come, bestowing what was of old sung by the prophets, and that the time of your prosperity was at hand;
41:63
but you do the contrary, not only not receiving the good things, but even slandering them, and fabricating causes that do not exist.
41:64
Now Matthew says:
41:65
'But if I cast them out by the Spirit of God;'
41:66
but Luke, 'But if I cast out the demons by the finger of God,' showing that the casting out of demons is a work of the greatest power, and not of any ordinary grace.
41:67
And He wishes indeed to reason from these things and to say, that if this be so, then the Son of God has come.
41:68
But this He does not say outright, but veiledly, and in a way that was not burdensome to them, He hints at it, saying:
41:69
'Then the kingdom of God is come upon you.'
41:70
Seest thou the abundance of His wisdom? By the very things wherewith they accused Him, by these He showed His coming shining forth.
41:71
然後,為要吸引他們,祂沒有單說「神的國來到了」,乃說「臨到你們」;
Then, that He might draw them, He did not say simply, 'The kingdom is come,' but 'upon you;'
41:72
那麼,你們為何對自己的益處心生厭惡呢?你們為何與自己的救恩為敵呢?這正是先知們從前所預言的那個時候;
Why then are you so ill-disposed toward your own good? Why do you make war upon your own salvation? This is that very time which of old the prophets foretold;
41:73
this is the sign of the coming which is celebrated by them—that these things should come to pass by divine power.
41:74
至於這事的確發生了,你們自己也知道;
That it does come to pass, you yourselves also know;
41:75
and that it comes to pass by divine power, the facts themselves cry aloud.
41:76
因為撒但如今絕不可能更為強壯;反倒必然是軟弱的;
For it is not possible that Satan should now be stronger; rather, it is altogether necessary that he be weak;
41:77
and one who is weak cannot, as though he were strong, cast out the strong demon.
41:78
These things He said to display the power of love, and the weakness of division and of contentious strife.
41:79
Wherefore He Himself also continually, up and down, exhorted the disciples concerning love, and how the devil does everything for the sake of destroying it.
41:80
Having therefore stated the second solution, He adds also a third, speaking thus:
41:81
How can anyone enter into the house of the strong man, and the
41:82
搶奪他的財物呢?除非先捆綁那壯士,然後才能搶奪他的家財。」撒但不能趕出撒但,這從前面所說的已經清楚了;
plunder his goods, unless he first bind the strong man, and then plunder his goods? For that it is not possible for Satan to cast out Satan is clear from what has been said;
41:83
and that neither is it possible to cast him out in any other way, unless one first overpowers him—this too is acknowledged by all.
41:84
What then is established from these things? What was said before, with fuller abundance.
41:85
祂說:我遠非以魔鬼為同盟,反倒是與他爭戰、將他捆綁;
For so far am I, He says, from using the devil as an ally, that I both make war upon him and bind him;
41:86
and the proof of this is that I plunder his goods.
41:87
See how the very opposite of what those men attempted to establish is demonstrated.
41:88
因為他們想要顯明,祂並非以自己的能力趕鬼;
For they wished to show that He does not cast out demons by His own power;
41:89
但祂卻顯明,祂不僅將眾鬼魔,更將那首領本身,以極大的權柄捆綁住了,並且在制服這些鬼之前,已先以自己的能力制服了他;
but He shows that He holds bound with much authority not only the demons, but also their very chieftain, and that He mastered him before these others by His own power;
41:90
and this is evident from the things that are done.
41:91
For if the one is the ruler and the others are subject to him,
41:92
how, unless he were defeated and made to bow down, could these have been plundered? And here what is said seems to me to be also a prophecy.
41:93
For not only the demons are the devil's goods, but also the men who do his works.
41:94
Signifying therefore that He casts out not only demons, but will also drive away all the deception of the world, and will dissolve his sorceries, and will make all his works useless—this is what He said.
41:95
祂也沒有說「奪取」,而是說「盡行搶奪」;
And He did not say, He will seize, but, He will plunder utterly;
41:96
indicating what is done with authority.
41:97
祂稱他為壯士,並非因他本性如此;
And He calls him strong, not because he is such by nature;
41:98
but signifying his former tyranny, which came about through our own slothfulness.
41:99
「不與我相合的,就是敵我的;
He who is not with Me is against Me;
41:100
and he who does not gather with Me scatters.
41:101
For what do I will? He says.
41:102
To bring men to God, to teach virtue, to proclaim the kingdom.
41:103
But what does the devil and the demons will? The contrary of these things.
41:104
How then was he who does not gather with Me, nor is with Me, going to cooperate with Me? And why do I speak of cooperating? On the contrary, it is his desire even to scatter what is Mine.
41:105
So then, he who not only does not cooperate, but even scatters—how could he have displayed such concord toward Me as to cast out demons together with Me? And it is likely that He said this not only concerning the devil, but that He also intended it to be suspected of Himself, as being against the devil, and scattering his things.
41:106
And how, He says, is he who is not with Me against Me? By this very thing, his not gathering.
41:107
But if this is true, much more is he who is against Him.
41:108
For if he who does not cooperate is an enemy, much more is he who makes war.
41:109
And all these things He says in order to show that His enmity toward the devil is great and unspeakable.
41:110
For tell me: if one had to make war upon someone, is not he who is unwilling to be your ally, by this very fact, against you? But if elsewhere He says, He who is not against you is for you, this is not contrary to this.
41:111
因為在這裡祂顯明他們是敵對的,而在那裡祂卻顯明他們在某方面是同夥的;
For here He showed that they were against them, but there He shows them to be in part with them;
41:112
for In Your name, he says, they cast out the demons.
41:113
But to me it seems that here He is also hinting at the Jews, ranking them together with the devil.
41:114
For they too were against Him, and were scattering what He had gathered.
41:115
For that He was hinting at them too, He made clear by speaking thus:
41:116
「所以我告訴你們:人一切的罪和褻瀆,都可得赦免;
Therefore I say to you, that every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven to men;
41:117
for since He had made His defense, and had solved the objection, and had shown them to be shameless in vain, He now proceeds to alarm them.
41:118
For this too is no small part of counsel and correction: not only to make one's defense and to persuade, but also to threaten—which He does in many places when laying down laws and giving counsel.
41:119
And what is said seems to have much obscurity; but if we attend to it, it will have an easy solution.
41:120
First then it is good to hear the words themselves.
41:121
祂說:「人一切的罪和褻瀆,都可得赦免;
Every sin, He says, and blasphemy shall be forgiven to men;
41:122
but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven them.
41:123
凡說話干犯人子的,還可得赦免;
And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him;
41:124
but whosoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age, nor in the age to come.
41:125
What then is it that He says? Many things against Me
41:126
you have said—that He is a deceiver, that He is opposed to God.
41:127
這些話,只要你們悔改,我便赦免你們,不向你們追討刑罰;
These things I forgive you if you repent, and I do not demand a penalty of you;
41:128
but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven, not even if you repent.
41:129
And how could this have reason? For this too was forgiven to those who repented.
41:130
For many at least of those who said these things believed afterward, and all was forgiven them.
41:131
What then is it that He says? That above all this sin is unpardonable.
41:132
究竟為何呢?因為他們並不認識祂究竟是誰;
Why ever so? Because they were ignorant of Him, who He really was;
41:133
but of the Spirit they had received sufficient experience.
41:134
For the prophets too spoke by Him whatever they spoke, and all those in the Old Covenant had the greatest conception concerning Him.
41:135
What He says, therefore, is this:
41:136
就算如此——你們因我所披戴的肉體而在我身上跌倒;
Be it so—you stumble at Me because of the flesh that surrounds Me;
41:137
can you also say concerning the Spirit that We do not know Him? For this very reason the blasphemy shall be unpardonable for you, and both here and there you shall pay the penalty.
41:138
因為有許多人只在今生受刑罰,如那行淫的人,如哥林多人中那些不配領受奧祕的人;
For many were punished here only, like the fornicator, like those among the Corinthians who partook of the mysteries unworthily;
41:139
but you, both here and there.
41:140
所以,凡你們在十字架以前所褻瀆我的話,我都赦免;
As many things then as you have blasphemed against Me before the cross, I forgive;
41:141
甚至那十字架本身的膽大妄為,我也赦免;
and even the very audacity of the cross itself;
41:142
and you will not be condemned for your unbelief alone.
41:143
(For not even those who believed before the cross had a faith that was complete.
41:144
而且祂在許多地方囑咐他們,在受難之前不可向任何人顯明祂;
And in many places He charges them to make Him known to no one before the Passion;
41:145
and upon the cross He said that this sin was forgiven them.) But the things you have spoken concerning the Spirit, these will not have pardon.
41:146
For to show that He is speaking of the things said against Himself before the cross, He added:
41:147
「凡說話干犯人子的,還可得赦免;
'Whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him;
41:148
but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall no longer be forgiven.'
41:149
Why so? Because this is well known to you, and you act shamelessly against things that are plain.
41:150
For even if you say that you do not know Me, surely you do not also fail to know this: that to cast out demons and to work healings is the work of the Holy Spirit.
41:151
It is not I alone, then, whom you outrage, but also the Holy Spirit.
41:152
Therefore your sentence is inescapable, both here and there.
41:153
因為在人中間,有些人今世受罰,來世也受罰;
For of men, some are punished both here and there;
41:154
others neither here nor there.
41:155
今世與來世都受罰的,正如這些人本身;
Both here and there, like these men themselves;
41:156
(因為他們今世也已受了報應,就是在那城被攻取時,遭受了那些無可挽回的災禍;
(for indeed here too they paid the penalty, when they suffered those irreparable things at the taking of the city;
41:157
and there they will endure the most grievous punishment;) like the citizens of Sodom, like many others.
41:158
But there only, like the rich man who was scorched in the flame and was not master even of a drop of water.
41:159
But here only, like the man who had committed fornication among the Corinthians.
41:160
今世來世都不受罰的,如眾使徒、如眾先知、如那有福的約伯;
But neither here nor there, like the apostles, like the prophets, like the blessed Job;
41:161
for the things they suffered were not of punishment, but of contests and wrestlings.
41:162
Let us therefore be zealous to become of their portion; but if not of theirs, then at least of those who wash away their sins here.
41:163
For fearful is that tribunal, and the retribution is inescapable, and the punishment irremediable.
41:164
But if you wish not to pay the penalty even here, judge yourself, demand of yourself an account.
41:165
Hear Paul saying that 'If we judged ourselves, we should not be judged.'
41:166
If you do this, going forward along the way you will attain even to the crown.
41:167
'And how shall we demand of ourselves a penalty?' one asks.
41:168
Lament, groan bitterly, humble yourself, afflict yourself, call to mind your sins one by one according to their kind.
41:169
This is no small torment of the soul.
41:170
If anyone has come to compunction, he knows that above all things the soul is chastised by this.
41:171
If anyone has come to the remembrance of his sins, he knows the anguish that springs from it.
41:172
For this reason God appoints righteousness as the prize for such repentance, saying:
41:173
'Declare you first your sins, that you may be justified.'
41:174
For it is not, indeed it is not, a small thing toward amendment, to gather together all one's sins, and to turn them over continually one by one according to their kind, and to reckon them up.
41:175
因為這樣行的人必如此痛悔,以致認為自己連活著都不配;
For he who does this will be so pierced with compunction as to deem himself not even worthy to live;
41:176
and he who thinks this will be softer than any wax.
41:177
你不要只向我說淫亂,也不要只說姦淫,也不要只說那些明顯而人所公認的罪;
For do not tell me of fornication alone, nor of adultery, nor of these things that are plain and acknowledged by all;
41:178
but gather up also the secret plots, and the false accusations, and the evil-speakings, and the vainglory, and the envy, and all such things.
41:179
For these will bring no small punishment.
41:180
因為辱罵人的必墮入地獄;
For indeed the reviler shall fall into hell;
41:181
醉酒的與國度無份;
and the drunkard has no part in the kingdom;
41:182
不愛鄰舍的人,這樣觸怒了神,以致縱然殉道也無益處;
and he who loves not his neighbor so offends God that he is not profited even by martyrdom;
41:183
不顧自己家人的,就是背了真道;
and he who neglects his own household has denied the faith;
41:184
and he who overlooks the poor is sent into the fire.
41:185
Do not then think these things to be small, but gather them all together, and write them down as in a book.
41:186
因為你若寫下,神就塗抹;
For if you write them, God blots them out;
41:187
just as, on the other hand, if you write them not, God both records them and demands the penalty.
41:188
It is far better, then, that they be written by us and blotted out from above, than the contrary—that, when we have forgotten them, God should bring them before our eyes in that day.
41:189
That this may not happen, then, let us reckon up all things with exactness, and we shall find ourselves guilty of many things.
41:190
For who is pure from covetousness? And do not tell me of the amount, but consider this—that even in a small matter we shall pay the same penalty—and repent.
41:191
Who is free from insolence? And this casts one into hell.
41:192
Who has not secretly spoken evil of his neighbor? [And this deprives one of the kingdom.] Who has not been arrogant? And such a one is more unclean than all.
41:193
And who has not looked with unchaste eyes? Such a one is a full-fledged adulterer.
41:194
Who has not been angry with his brother without cause? Such a one is liable to the council.
41:195
Who has not sworn an oath? And this is of the evil one.
41:196
Who has not sworn falsely? Such a one is more than of the evil one.
41:197
Who has not been a slave to mammon? Such a one has fallen from the genuine servitude of Christ.
41:198
我還有比這些更大的事可說;
I have also other things greater than these to speak of;
41:199
but these too are sufficient, and enough to bring to compunction anyone who is not of stone nor exceedingly senseless.
41:200
For if each one of them casts into hell, what will they not accomplish when all come together at once? 'How then is it possible to be saved?' one asks.
41:201
By applying the counterbalancing remedies against these—almsgiving, prayers, compunction, repentance, humility, a contrite heart, contempt of possessions.
41:202
For God has cut out countless ways of salvation, if only we are willing to attend to them.
41:203
Let us therefore attend, and by all means cleanse away our wounds—showing mercy, remitting our wrath toward those who have grieved us, giving thanks to God for all things, fasting according to our power, praying sincerely, making for ourselves friends out of the mammon of unrighteousness.
41:204
因為這樣,我們就能既為自己的過犯得著赦免,又得著那所應許的美善之物;
For thus shall we be able both to obtain pardon for our transgressions, and to attain the good things that have been promised;
41:205
which may it be granted us all to be counted worthy of, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might unto the ages of ages. Amen.
