'So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations;'
4:2
'and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations;'
4:3
'and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.'
4:4
他把所有的世代分為三段,藉此表明:即使他們的政體改變了,他們也未曾變好;無論是在貴族政治之下、君主政治之下、還是寡頭政治之下,他們都陷在同樣的罪惡中;
He divided all the generations into three parts, showing that not even when their forms of government were changed did they become better, but whether under aristocracy, or under monarchy, or under oligarchy, they were in the same evils;
4:5
and neither when demagogues, nor priests, nor kings governed them, did they gain anything more in respect of virtue.
4:6
那麼,為甚麼在中段他略過了三位君王,而在末段列了十二代,卻說有十四代呢?前一個問題我留給你們去查考;
But for what reason, in the middle portion he passed over three kings, while in the last, having set down twelve generations, he said they were fourteen? The former point I leave to you to inquire into;
4:7
因為不必凡事都替你們解答,免得你們懈怠鬆散;
for it is not necessary to solve everything for you, lest ye grow slothful;
4:8
but the second point we ourselves will state.
4:9
For here it seems to me that he places both the period of the captivity in the rank of a generation, and Christ Himself, joining Him to us from every side.
4:10
他也巧妙地提到那次被擄,藉此表明:即使他們被擄下去,也沒有變得更加自制;
And he well recalls that captivity also, making clear that not even when they had gone down thither did they become more self-controlled;
4:11
so that from every side His coming might appear necessary.
4:12
有人問:那麼馬可為甚麼不這樣做,不追溯基督的家譜,反倒把一切都簡短地說了呢?在我看來,馬太是在眾人之先著手這事的;
Why then does Mark not do this, someone asks, nor trace the genealogy of Christ, but utter everything concisely? It seems to me that Matthew began the work before the others;
4:13
所以他就詳盡準確地記下了家譜,並且著重那些緊要的事;
wherefore he also sets down the genealogy with accuracy, and dwells upon the pressing matters;
4:14
but Mark came after him, wherefore he took the shorter road, inasmuch as the things had already been spoken and were plain to the nation to which the Jewish people gave the greater heed.
4:15
For this reason this manner of prefaces was necessary among them.
4:16
但若有時也行了神蹟,那是為外邦人的緣故而行的,好叫許多人歸化為皈依者,也為顯明神的大能;那是在仇敵擄掠他們、以為自己得勝是因自己的神明強盛的時候所行的;
But if ever signs were also wrought, they were wrought for the sake of the barbarians, that many might become proselytes, and for a demonstration of the power of God, whenever their enemies, having taken them captive, supposed that they had prevailed because the gods among themselves were strong;
4:17
正如在埃及那樣,也有許多雜居的閒雜人隨他們一同上來;
as in Egypt, whence also a great mixed multitude went up;
4:18
and afterwards in Babylon, the events concerning the furnace and the dreams.
4:19
當他們獨自在曠野的時候,也有神蹟發生,正如在我們今日一樣;
And signs also came to pass when they were by themselves, in the wilderness, just as also in our own day;
4:20
因為在我們中間,當我們從迷惑中出來的時候,也顯出了許多奇事;
for indeed among us too, when we were coming out of error, many wonders were displayed;
4:21
when true religion was being planted.
4:22
但即使日後也有發生,那也是稀少而零星的;
But if they also occurred afterwards, they were few and scattered;
4:23
as, for instance, when the sun stood still upon him who undertook these things.
4:24
How then does Luke both trace the genealogy and do this at greater length? Inasmuch as Matthew had prepared the way, he wishes to teach us something more than what had been said.
4:25
並且各人也照樣效法了自己的老師;
And each one likewise imitated his own teacher;
4:26
一個效法保羅,他的話語比江河更充沛地流溢;
the one imitated Paul, flowing more than the rivers;
4:27
the other imitated Peter, who was careful of brevity.
4:28
And why, pray, did Matthew at the outset not say, as the prophet did:
4:29
'and, The word which came unto me'? Because he was writing to men of right disposition, and such as gave close heed to him.
4:30
For indeed the wonders that had come to pass cried aloud, and those who received them were exceedingly faithful.
4:31
But in the case of the prophets, neither were there so many wonders proclaiming them, and the throng of false prophets abounded greatly, checking the course and again driving it back.
4:32
And one may see this to have come to pass in our own case also.
4:33
For indeed in our own generation, in the time of Julian, who surpassed all men in impiety, many strange things came to pass.
4:34
因為當猶太人試圖重建耶路撒冷聖殿的時候,有火從根基中迸出,攔阻了他們眾人;
For when the Jews were attempting to raise up again the temple in Jerusalem, fire leaping out from the foundations hindered them all;
4:35
And when he displayed his drunken outrage against the sacred vessels, both the treasurer and that man's uncle who bore the same name — the one, eaten by worms, gave up the ghost, while the other was rent asunder through the midst.
4:36
And the failing of the springs when the sacrifices were being offered there, and the famine that fell upon the cities together with the king himself — this was a very great sign.
4:37
For it is God's custom to do such things:
4:38
when evils have increased, and He beholds His own people afflicted, while the adversaries are drunk with the excess of their tyranny against them, then it is that He displays His own dominion.
4:39
This He did also in Persia, in the case of the Jews.
4:40
That, therefore, it was not simply nor by chance that he divided the ancestors of Christ into three sections, is plain from what has been said.
4:41
Consider too from where he begins and where he ends:
4:42
從亞伯拉罕到大衛;
from Abraham to David;
4:43
從大衛到遷徙巴比倫;
from David to the deportation to Babylon;
4:44
from this to Christ Himself.
4:45
For indeed, in beginning he set the two in succession, both David and Abraham, and in summing up he made mention of both alike.
4:46
For, as I said before, it was to them that the promises had been made.
4:47
但為何他既提到遷徙巴比倫,卻不也提到下到埃及呢?因為對那些人他們已不再懼怕,對這些人卻仍舊戰兢;
But why then, just as he made mention of the deportation to Babylon, did he not also mention the going down into Egypt? Because those they no longer feared, but at these they still trembled;
4:48
並且一件是古時的,另一件卻是近期、剛剛發生的;
and the one was ancient, but the other was recent and but lately come to pass;
4:49
and there they were carried down not on account of sins, but here they were carried away because of transgressions.
4:50
然而若有人也試著去闡釋這些名字本身的意義,他便會發現即便從此處也生出許多的默想,且大有裨益於新約;
But if one should also attempt to render the interpretations of their very names, he will find much contemplation arising even from this, and much that contributes to the New Testament;
4:51
例如,從亞伯拉罕、從雅各、從所羅門、從所羅巴伯;
as for instance, from Abraham, from Jacob, from Solomon, from Zerubbabel;
4:52
for it was not simply that these names were laid upon them.
4:53
But lest we should seem to weary you by making our discourse too long, let us pass these things by and go on to the more pressing matters.
4:54
Having then named all the ancestors, and ended with Joseph, he did not stop there, but added:
4:55
showing that it was on her account that he traced this man's genealogy also.
4:56
Then, lest on hearing 'the husband of Mary' you should suppose that He was born by the common law of nature, see how he corrects this by what he adds.
4:57
他說:你已聽見有丈夫,你已聽見有母親,你已聽見給孩子起的名字;
You have heard, he says, of a husband; you have heard of a mother; you have heard of a name given to the child;
4:58
therefore hear also the manner of the birth.
4:59
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this wise.
4:60
你對我說的是哪一種出生呢?請告訴我;
Of what birth are you speaking to me? tell me;
4:61
seeing that you have already told of the ancestors.
4:62
But I desire to speak also of the manner of the birth.
4:63
Do you see how he roused up the hearer? For as one about to say something more novel, he promises to tell the manner as well.
4:64
And observe the most excellent sequence of what has been said.
4:65
For he did not at once come to the birth, but first reminds us of how many generations He was removed from Abraham, how many from David, from the deportation to Babylon; and by these things he casts the careful hearer into an examination of the times, showing that this is He —
4:66
that Christ who was proclaimed through the prophets.
4:67
For when you have numbered the generations, and learned from the time that this is He, you will easily receive also the miracle that came to pass concerning the birth.
4:68
因為他既要說出一件大事——就是祂由童女所生——在數算年代之先,他就用「馬利亞的丈夫」這話遮蓋了所說的,甚至把那出生本身的敘述縮短了;
For since he was about to utter something great — that He was born of a Virgin — before numbering the time he casts a shadow over what has been said, by saying 'the husband of Mary,' or rather he even cuts short the account of the birth itself;
4:69
然後他又數算年歲,提醒聽眾這位就是族長雅各所宣告、當猶太的掌權者終必絕跡時要來到的那一位;
and then he numbers the years besides, reminding the hearer that this is He whom the patriarch Jacob declared would come when the Jewish rulers should at length fail;
4:70
whom the prophet Daniel foretold would come after those many weeks.
4:71
And if one should be willing to reckon down these years, spoken of in the number of weeks by the angel to Daniel, from the building of the city unto His birth, he will see these agreeing with those.
4:72
How then was He born? tell me. When His mother Mary had been betrothed.
4:73
He did not say 'a virgin,' but simply 'a mother,' that the word might be the more readily received.
4:74
Wherefore, having first prepared the hearer to expect to hear something of the usual sort, and having held him fast by this, he then astounds him by bringing in the marvellous fact, saying that 'before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.'
4:75
就是在她還沒有被接到新郎的家裡以先;
before she was brought into the house of the bridegroom;
4:76
因為古人多半有一種習俗,把已許配的女子留在家中,甚至到如今人也可看見這事仍在施行;
for it was the custom among the ancients, for the most part, to keep those betrothed in the house, seeing that even now one may see this being done;
4:77
and Lot's sons-in-law also were within, with him.
4:78
So she too was within, with Joseph.
4:79
And for what reason did she not conceive before the betrothal? In order that, as I said from the beginning, what was taking place might for a while be overshadowed, and that the Virgin might escape every evil suspicion.
4:80
For when he who above all others ought to have been jealous appears not only not exposing her to public shame nor dishonouring her, but even receiving her and ministering to her after the conception, it is quite plain that, unless he had clearly persuaded himself that what was born was of the Spirit's working, he would not have retained her and rendered all the other services.
4:81
並且他極其恰當地寫下「她被發現懷了孕」這話;
And most fitly indeed did he set down the words, 'She was found with child';
4:82
which is wont to be said of things marvellous, and coming to pass beyond all hope, and unlooked for.
4:83
Do not therefore go further, nor seek anything more than what has been said, nor say:
4:84
And how did the Spirit work this of a virgin? For if, when nature is at work, it is impossible to explain the manner of the forming, how shall we be able to tell these things when the Spirit is working wonders? So that he might not weary the evangelist, nor trouble him by continually asking these things, having named the One who wrought the miracle, he was rid of the matter.
4:85
For I know nothing more, he says, save only that what was born came to pass of the Holy Spirit.
4:86
Let them be ashamed who busy themselves in prying into the generation from above.
4:87
因為若連這有千萬見證、在許多世代以先就被宣告、又已顯明並被摸過的出生,尚且無人能解釋,那些窺探並多方鑽究那難以言喻之出生的人,豈不留下極致的瘋狂麼?因為連加百列,連馬太,也不能多說甚麼,只說那是出於聖靈;
For if no one can explain this birth, which has ten thousand witnesses, and was proclaimed so many ages before, and was made manifest and handled, what excess of madness do they leave behind who busy themselves and meddle with that ineffable generation? For neither Gabriel nor Matthew was able to say anything more, save only that it was of the Spirit;
4:88
至於怎樣出於聖靈、以何方式,這些人中無一能加以解釋;
but how it was of the Spirit, and in what manner, none of these explained;
4:89
你也不要以為既聽見「出於聖靈」,就已學會了全部;
nor think that you have learned the whole, in hearing 'of the Spirit';
4:90
因為實在有許多事,即或我們正在學這件事,卻仍舊不明白;
for indeed there are many things of which we are still ignorant, even while learning this;
4:91
例如,那無限的怎能在腹中;
as, for instance, how the Infinite is in a womb;
4:92
那托住萬有的怎能被一婦人懷在腹中;
how He who upholds all things is carried in the womb by a woman;
4:93
how the Virgin brings forth, and remains a virgin.
4:94
How, tell me, did the Spirit frame that temple? how did He take not all the flesh from the womb, but a part of it, and cause it to grow and gave it shape? For that He came forth from the flesh of the Virgin, he made plain by saying —
4:95
保羅也說「為女子所生」;
and Paul, 'made of a woman';
4:96
stopping the mouths of those who say that Christ passed through as through some conduit.
4:97
因為若真如此,還用得著腹麼?若真如此,祂與我們就毫無相通之處;
For if this were so, what need of the womb? If this were so, He has nothing in common with us;
4:98
but that flesh would be some other kind, not of our lump.
4:99
How then is He of the root of Jesse? and how a rod? how a son of man? how
4:100
is Mary His mother? how of the seed of David? how did He take the form of a servant? how did The Word become flesh? and how does Paul say to the Romans —
4:101
「基督按肉體說是從他們出來的,祂是在萬有之上、永遠可稱頌的神」?因此,祂是出於我們、出於我們這團塊、又出於童貞的腹,這從這些以及其他許多的話都顯明了;
'Of whom is Christ according to the flesh, who is God over all'? That, then, He is of us and of our lump, and of the virgin womb, is plain from these things and from many others besides;
4:102
do not then, you also, inquire, but receive what has been revealed, and do not busy yourself with what has been kept silent.
4:103
Now Joseph her husband, being a just man, he says, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
4:104
Having said that it was of the Holy Spirit, and without intercourse, he establishes the statement from yet another quarter as well.
4:105
For lest anyone should say, 'Whence is this evident? Who saw, who ever heard of such a thing coming to pass?' — and lest you should suspect the disciple of inventing these things to gratify his Master — he brings in Joseph, who by what he suffered contributes to the credibility of what has been said, all but declaring by what he reports:
4:106
'If you do not believe me, and are suspicious of my testimony, believe the man.'
4:107
'For Joseph,' he says, 'her husband, being a righteous man'.
4:108
By 'righteous' he here means the man virtuous in all things.
4:109
誠然,不貪圖他人之物也是一種公義;
For righteousness is indeed also the not being covetous;
4:110
然而,還有一種公義是指整全的德行;
but there is also righteousness in the sense of virtue as a whole;
4:111
and it is especially in this latter sense that the Scripture employs the term 'righteousness' in his case, as when it says:
4:112
「一個公義誠實的人」;
'A man righteous and true';
4:113
and again, 'And they were both righteous.'
4:114
'Being righteous, therefore' — that is, kind and forbearing — 'he was minded to put her away privily.'
4:115
For this reason he tells of what happened before Joseph's knowledge of the matter, so that you may not disbelieve what came to pass after he came to know.
4:116
And yet such a woman was liable not only to public exposure, but the Law also commanded that she be punished.
4:117
But Joseph remitted not only that greater penalty, but also the lesser one, namely the disgrace.
4:118
For not only did he not wish to punish her, but he did not even wish to expose her.
4:119
Do you see a man of true wisdom, delivered from the most tyrannical of passions? For you know how great a thing jealousy is.
4:120
For this reason also he who knew these things clearly said:
4:121
「因為丈夫的怒氣滿了嫉妒;
'For the wrath of a man is full of jealousy;
4:122
在報應的日子他必不留情」;
he will not spare in the day of judgement';
4:123
and, 'Jealousy is cruel as the grave.'
4:124
And we too know of many who have chosen rather to give up their very life than to fall under a suspicion of jealousy.
4:125
But here there was not even any suspicion, for the swelling of the womb convicted her.
4:126
Nevertheless he was so pure from passion, that he was unwilling to grieve the Virgin even in the smallest matters.
4:127
For since to keep her within his house seemed to be a transgression of the Law, while to make a public spectacle of her and bring her to judgement would have compelled him to deliver her over to death,
4:128
he does none of these things, but now already conducts himself above the Law.
4:129
For it was fitting that, now that grace had come, there should henceforth be many signs of a lofty manner of life.
4:130
因為正如太陽,甚至在尚未顯出它的光芒之前,就已從遠處以它的光照亮世界的大部分;
For just as the sun, even before it has shown its rays, illumines from afar with its light the greater part of the world;
4:131
so also Christ, when about to rise from that womb, even before He came forth, lit up the whole world.
4:132
Wherefore also, even before the birth-pangs, prophets leaped for joy, and women foretold things to come, and John, not yet come forth from the belly, leaped from within his mother's womb.
4:133
因此,這人也顯出極大的智慧;
Hence this man too displayed great wisdom;
4:134
for he neither brought a charge against her, nor reproached her, but only sought to send her away.
4:135
When, therefore, matters were in this state, and everything was in perplexity, the angel comes, resolving all the difficulties.
4:136
但值得探究的是,為何天使不在此之先、不在這人動了這念頭之前就說話,卻在他已經思量之後才來到;
But it is worth inquiring why the angel did not speak before this, before the man had conceived this thought, but comes only after he had deliberated;
4:137
for it says, 'While he thought on these things, the angel comes.'
4:138
And yet He brings the good tidings to her even before she conceived — which itself again presents another difficulty.
4:139
For even if the angel had not told him, why did the Virgin keep silence, when she had heard from the angel, and, seeing her betrothed troubled, did not resolve his perplexity? Why, then, did the angel not speak before he was troubled? For it was necessary first to resolve the earlier difficulty.
4:140
Why, then, did he not speak? So that Joseph might not disbelieve, and suffer the same as Zacharias.
4:141
因為當事情已經顯而易見時,此後的信心就容易了;
For when the thing is already visible, faith thereafter is easy;
4:142
but when it has not yet even taken its beginning, it is not so.
4:143
then what was said would be readily accepted.
4:144
為此緣故,天使沒有從一開始就說;
For this reason the angel did not speak from the beginning;
4:145
and the Virgin also kept silence for the same reason.
4:146
因為她想,若向她的未婚夫宣告如此奇異的事,未必會被相信;
For she did not think she would be believed by her betrothed, in announcing so strange a thing;
4:147
but rather that she would provoke him the more, as though she were covering up a sin that had been committed.
4:148
For if she herself, who was to receive so great a grace, suffered something human, and says:
4:149
「我沒有出嫁,怎麼有這事呢?」——那麼他就必更加疑惑;
'How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?' — much more would he have doubted;
4:150
and especially hearing it from a woman who was under suspicion.
4:151
For these reasons the Virgin says nothing to him, but the angel, when the occasion called for it, presents himself.
4:152
'Why, then,' one may ask, 'did he not do this in the case of the Virgin also, and bring her the good tidings after the conception?' So that she might not be in confusion and great disturbance.
4:153
For it was likely that, not knowing the certainty, she might have devised some untoward thing concerning herself, and come to the noose or the sword, being unable to bear the shame.
4:154
因為那童女實在是奇妙的,路加也顯出她的德行,說她聽見那問安的話時,並沒有立刻縱情忘形,也沒有立即接受所說的;
For the Virgin was indeed wonderful, and Luke shows her virtue, saying that when she heard the salutation, she did not straightway pour herself out, nor accept what was said;
4:155
but she was troubled, seeking what manner of salutation this might be.
4:156
But she who was so exact and careful would surely have been beside herself with despondency, reckoning up the shame, and not expecting, whatever she might say, to persuade any of her hearers that what had happened was no adultery.
4:157
So that these things might not come to pass, the angel came before the conception.
4:158
For it was needful that that womb, upon which the Maker of all set foot, should be free from all disturbance,
4:159
and that the soul which was counted worthy to become the minister of such mysteries should be delivered from all commotion.
4:160
為著這些緣故,祂在受孕之前對童女說話,卻在臨產陣痛之時對約瑟說話;
For these reasons He speaks to the Virgin before the conception, but to Joseph at the season of the birth-pangs;
4:161
which many of the simpler sort, not perceiving, have said to be a discrepancy, because Luke says that the good tidings were brought to Mary, while Matthew says to Joseph, not knowing that both took place.
4:162
這一點在整卷歷史中都是必須留意的;
And this it is necessary to observe throughout the whole history;
4:163
for thus we shall resolve many things that seem to be discrepancies.
4:164
The angel, then, comes while Joseph was troubled.
4:165
For both on account of what has been said, and so that his true wisdom might be made manifest, He deferred His coming.
4:166
But when the work was about to come to its issue, He then at length presents Himself.
4:167
'But while he thought on these things, an angel appears to Joseph in a dream.'
4:168
Do you see the man's forbearance? Not only in that he did not punish her, but in that he did not even tell anyone, not even her who was under suspicion, but reasoned within himself, striving to hide the cause even from the Virgin herself.
4:169
因為經上並沒有說「他想要趕她出去」,乃是說「休了她」;
For he did not say, 'He wished to cast her out,' but 'to put her away';
4:170
so gentle and forbearing was the man.
4:171
And while he was pondering these things, the angel appears in a dream.
4:172
And why not openly, as to the shepherds and to Zacharias and to the Virgin? The man was exceedingly faithful, and had no need of this vision.
4:173
因為那童女既領受了極大之事的喜信,甚至比對撒迦利亞所說的更大,且是在事情發生之先,就也需要一個非凡的異象;
For the Virgin, inasmuch as she was receiving tidings of something very great, even greater than what was told to Zacharias, and that before the event, had need also of an extraordinary vision;
4:174
and the shepherds, inasmuch as they were of a ruder disposition.
4:175
But this man, after the conception, when his soul had at last been seized by an evil suspicion and yet stood ready to be transferred to kindlier hopes should anyone appear to guide him toward this, readily receives the revelation.
4:176
For this reason the good news is brought to him after the suspicion, so that this very fact might become for him a proof of what was spoken.
4:177
因為他未曾向任何人透露,卻聽見天使所說的,正是他心中所默想的,這就給了他一個無可爭辯的憑據,證明那說話者是從神那裡來的;
For the fact that he had told no one, but heard the angel speaking the very things he had pondered in his mind, furnished him with an indisputable sign that the speaker had come from God;
4:178
for it belongs to Him alone to know the hidden secrets of the heart.
4:179
And so the man's high-mindedness is displayed, and the timely word contributes to his faith, and the account becomes free of suspicion, showing that he had suffered only what it was natural for a man to suffer.
4:180
How then does the angel assure him? Listen, and marvel at the wisdom of the words spoken.
4:181
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife."
4:182
At once he reminds him of David, from whom the Christ was to come, and does not allow him
4:183
to be thrown into confusion, having recalled, by the naming of his forefathers, the promise made to the whole race.
4:184
他究竟為何稱約瑟為大衛的子孫呢?「不要怕」;
For with what purpose did he call him son of David? "Do not be afraid";
4:185
然而在別處神卻不這樣行,反倒當有人對一個婦人心懷不當的意圖時,神就更嚴厲地、帶著恐嚇地使用祂的話;
and yet elsewhere God does not act thus, but when someone was purposing concerning a woman what he ought not, God employed His word more sharply and with a threat;
4:186
然而即使在那裡,那事也是出於無知;
and yet even there the matter was one of ignorance;
4:187
因為那人(亞比米勒)也是在不知情之下娶了撒拉;
for that man too took Sarah without knowing;
4:188
因為所施行之事的分量甚大,而這兩人之間的差距也甚大;
for great was the magnitude of the things being dispensed, and great too the distance between the two men;
4:189
wherefore neither was there need of rebuke.
4:190
And by saying "Do not be afraid," he shows that Joseph was afraid lest he give offense to God by keeping an adulteress, so that, had this not been so, he would not even have thought of putting her away.
4:191
Through everything, then, he shows that the angel has come from God, bringing forward and setting before him all that he had thought and all that he had suffered in his mind.
4:192
And having spoken her name, he did not stop there, but added, "your wife" — he would not have called her so had she been corrupted.
4:193
在此他稱那已許配的為「妻子」;
Here he calls the betrothed "wife";
4:194
just as Scripture is also accustomed to call the suitors "sons-in-law" even before the marriage.
4:195
那麼「娶」是甚麼意思呢?就是把她留在家中;
And what does "to take" mean? To keep her within;
4:196
for already in his mind she had been released.
4:197
他說:「這個已被休掉的,你要留下她,是神——而非她的父母——交付給你的;
"This one who has been released," he says, "keep her, whom God, not her parents, hands over to you;
4:198
and He hands her over not for marriage, but for dwelling together, and He hands her over through my voice.
4:199
Just as Christ afterward also handed her over to the disciple, so now also to Joseph.
4:200
Then, having also hinted at the matter, he did not name the evil suspicion, but more reverently and more fittingly did away with it too by the cause of the birth-pangs, showing that on account of the very thing he had feared and wished to put her away, on account of this very thing he would rightly both take her and keep her within — resolving his anguish out of the abundance of his reasoning.
4:201
"For not only," he says, "is she free from unlawful union, but she conceives above nature."
4:202
「所以你不但要放下懼怕,更要大大歡喜;
"Therefore do not merely release your fear, but rejoice all the more;
4:203
for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit."
4:204
Paradoxical is what has been said, transcending human reasoning, and higher than the laws of nature.
4:205
How then will the man inexperienced in such narratives believe? "From the things past," he says, "from the revelations."
4:206
正因如此,天使把約瑟心中的一切都揭露出來——他所經歷的、所懼怕的、所打算要行的——好叫他能藉著那些事,也對這件事生出確信;
For on this account he uncovered all that was in his mind — what he had suffered, what he had feared, what he had purposed to do — so that from those things this too might be confirmed;
4:207
or rather, he draws him on not from the things past alone, but also from the things to come.
4:208
"She will bear," he says, "a son, and you shall call His name Jesus."
4:209
"For do not, because it is of the Holy Spirit, suppose that you are estranged from the ministry that pertains to this dispensation.
4:210
因為你雖然對這生產毫無貢獻,那童貞女也依然未曾被觸碰,然而那本屬父親所有的——絲毫不損童貞的尊榮——我要賜給你,就是為那所生的起名;
For although you contribute nothing to the birth, but the Virgin remained untouched, nevertheless that which is a father's own — without any harm to the dignity of virginity — this I give to you: to bestow the name upon the one born;
4:211
for although the offspring is not yours, yet you shall display a father's part concerning Him."
4:212
"For this reason I even make you kin to the one born at once, through the giving of the name."
4:213
Then, lest again from this someone should suspect him to be a father, hear how carefully he sets down what follows.
4:214
他沒有說「她要為你生」,只單單說「她要生」,把這事說得含糊無定;
He did not say, "She will bear to you," but simply, "She will bear," leaving it indefinite;
4:215
for she was not bearing to him, but to the whole world.
4:216
For this reason too the angel came bringing the name from heaven, and thereby showing the birth to be wondrous, in that it was God who sent down the appellation from above through the angel to Joseph.
4:217
For neither was this a mere trifle, but a treasure of countless good things.
4:218
Wherefore the angel also interprets it, and holds out kindly hopes, and by this draws him toward faith.
4:219
因為我們對這類事物慣常更為傾心;
For toward these things we are wont to be more inclined;
4:220
wherefore also we are the more disposed to believe them.
4:221
Having therefore established faith from all sides — from the things past, from the things to come, from the things present, from the honor shown toward Him — he timely brings in the prophet also, who casts his vote in agreement with all these.
4:222
But before bringing him in, he proclaims beforehand the good things that were to come upon the world through Him.
4:223
The riddance and abolition of sins.
4:224
"For He Himself," he says, "will save His people from their sins." And here too he indicates the paradox.
4:225
因為他所傳的佳音,不是關乎肉眼可見的爭戰,也不是關乎外邦蠻族,乃是關乎比這些遠為重大的事——就是脫離罪惡;
For he brings the good news not of sensible wars, nor of barbarians, but of what was far greater than these — the deliverance from sins;
4:226
which had never before been possible for anyone.
4:227
"And for what reason," one may ask, "did he say 'His people,' and not add 'and the nations' as well?" That he might not for the present alarm the hearer.
4:228
For to the one who hears with understanding, he hinted at the nations as well.
4:229
For His people are not the Jews only, but also all who come to Him and receive the knowledge that is from Him.
4:230
And consider how he opened up to us also His dignity, by calling the Jewish nation His people.
4:231
For this shows nothing other than that the one born is the Child of God, and that his discourse concerns the King of the powers above.
4:232
For neither does the forgiving of sins belong to any other power, save to that Being alone.
4:233
Since therefore we have enjoyed so great a gift, let us do all things, so as not to outrage so great a benefaction.
4:234
For if even before this honor the things done were worthy of punishment, much more so after this unspeakable benefaction.
4:235
And I say these things now not casually, but because I see many, after baptism, continuing more careless than the uninitiated, and possessing no distinguishing mark of their manner of life.
4:236
For this reason it is not possible, whether in the marketplace or in the church, quickly to know who is the believer and who the unbeliever — unless one should chance to be present at the time of the mysteries, and see some being sent out and others remaining within.
4:237
But it ought to be not by the place, but by the manner, that one is recognized.
4:238
因為外在的尊位,自然是憑那圍繞其外的憑據顯明出來;
For outward dignities are naturally made evident from the outward tokens that surround them;
4:239
but our things ought to be recognized from the soul.
4:240
For the believer ought to appear such not from the gift alone, but also from the newness of his life.
4:241
The believer must be a light of the world, and salt.
4:242
But when you give light neither to yourself, nor bind fast your own corruption, from where shall we henceforth know you? That you have set foot upon the sacred streams? But this becomes for you provision for punishment.
4:243
For the greatness of the honor becomes an increase of punishment for those who choose to live unworthily of the honor.
4:244
For the believer ought to shine forth not from what he received from God alone, but also from what he himself has contributed, and to be recognized on every side — from his walk, from his glance, from his bearing, from his voice.
4:245
I have said these things not for display, but that we may order ourselves rightly for the benefit of those who behold us.
4:246
But as things now stand, from whatever direction I seek to recognize you, everywhere I find you appearing as the very opposite.
4:247
因為若我想從你出入之處認識你,我看見你整天消磨在賽馬場、劇場和不法的行徑中,在市集裡邪惡的聚集中,與敗壞之人為伍;
For if I wish to gauge you from your place of resort, I see you passing whole days in horse-races and theatres and lawless doings, in wicked gatherings in the marketplace, and in the company of corrupted men;
4:248
若從你面容的樣式看,我見你不住地放聲狂笑、放蕩不羈,好像一個咧嘴獰笑、恬不知恥的娼妓;
and if from the fashion of your countenance, I see you perpetually cackling with laughter and dissolute, like some grinning and shameless harlot;
4:249
若從你的衣著看,我見你的裝束與那舞台上的優伶毫無二致;
and if from your garments, I see you disposed no better than those upon the stage;
4:250
若從你的隨從看,你所帶著四處走的乃是食客與諂媚之徒;
and if from your attendants, you drag about parasites and flatterers;
4:251
若從你的言語看,我聽不見你說出任何健全的話,任何必需的話,任何能維繫我們生命的話;
and if from your words, I hear you utter nothing sound, nothing needful, nothing that holds our life together;
4:252
and if from your table, the accusation from that quarter will appear even greater.
4:253
Whence then, tell me, shall I be able to recognize you as one of the faithful, when all that has been said votes to the contrary? And why do I speak of the faithful? For I cannot even clearly learn whether you are a man at all.
4:254
因為當你像驢一樣尥蹶子,像公牛一樣騰躍,像馬一樣為著婦女嘶鳴;
For when you kick like an ass, and leap like a bull, and neigh after women like a horse;
4:255
像熊一樣貪食,像騾子一樣養肥你的肉體;
and are gluttonous like a bear, and fatten your flesh like a mule;
4:256
像駱駝一樣懷恨記仇;
and bear grudges like a camel;
4:257
像狼一樣搶奪,像蛇一樣發怒,像蠍子一樣螫刺,像狐狸一樣詭詐陰險,像毒蛇和蝮蛇一樣存留惡毒的毒液,又像那惡魔一樣攻擊你的弟兄;
and snatch like a wolf, and grow angry like a serpent, and sting like a scorpion, and are treacherous like a fox, and keep the venom of malice like an asp and a viper, and wage war against your brethren like that wicked demon:
4:258
how shall I be able to number you among men, when I do not see in you the marks of such a nature? For while seeking the difference between a catechumen and one of the faithful, I am in danger of failing even to find the difference between a man and a beast.
4:259
the difference, I say, between a man and a wild beast.
4:260
因為我該稱你為甚麼呢?稱為野獸嗎?可是野獸只被這些惡習中的一種所轄制;
For what shall I call you? A beast? But the beasts are held fast by one only of these vices;
4:261
but you, having heaped all of them together at once, travel far beyond their irrationality.
4:262
But shall I call you a demon? Yet a demon is neither enslaved to the tyranny of the belly, nor is it enamored of money.
4:263
Since then you have more vices than both beasts and demons, how shall we call you a man, tell me? And if you cannot be called a man, how shall we address you as one of the faithful? And what is yet more grievous is this: that being in so evil a condition, we do not even consider the deformity of our soul, nor do we perceive its unsightliness.
4:264
然而你坐在理髮店裡剪髮時,卻拿起鏡子,極其仔細地端詳頭髮的梳理,還詢問旁邊站著的人,以及那替你剪髮的人,看他把你額前的頭髮理得是否美觀;
But while sitting in the barber's shop and having your hair cut, you take the mirror and examine with all exactness the arrangement of your hair, and you ask those standing by, and the very man who cut it, whether he has well composed the locks about your forehead;
4:265
你雖然常常已是老人,卻不以耽溺於年輕人的虛妄幻想為恥;
and though often an old man, you are not ashamed to rave over youthful fancies;
4:266
yet of our soul, which has become not only deformed, but even beast-shaped, and, according to the outside fable, a very Scylla or Chimaera, we perceive not even a little.
4:267
其實這裡也有一面屬靈的鏡子,且遠比那面鏡子更好、更有用;
And yet here too there is a spiritual mirror, and one far better and more useful than that other;
4:268
for it does not merely show the deformity, but also transforms it into unspeakable beauty, if we are willing.
4:269
And this mirror is the remembrance of good men, and the record of their blessed life, the reading of the Scriptures, the laws given by God.
4:270
And if you are willing but once only to look upon the images of those holy men, you will see the unsightliness of your own mind; and having seen it, you will thenceforth need nothing else to be delivered from this foulness.
4:271
For to this end also the mirror is useful to us, and it makes the transformation easy.
4:272
Let no one, therefore, remain in the form of the irrational creatures.
4:273
For if the servant does not enter into his father's house, when you yourself have become also a beast, how shall you be able to set foot upon those forecourts? And why do I speak of a beast? Such a one is more grievous than any beast.
4:274
因為那些走獸,雖然本性凶野,一旦受了人的馴養技藝,也常常變得溫馴;
For those creatures, though wild by nature, having enjoyed man's skill, often become tame;
4:275
但你既已把牠們本性的凶野變為違乎本性的溫馴,那麼當你把自己本性的溫和帶入違乎本性的凶野時,你將有甚麼可辯解的呢?你把本性凶野的顯為溫馴,卻把本性溫和的自己立為違乎本性的凶野?你馴服獅子,使牠俯首聽命,卻使你自己的怒氣比獅子更為凶暴?況且在馴獅那件事上有兩重阻礙:那野獸既沒有理性,又是萬物中最易發怒的;
but you, who have changed their natural savagery into a tameness contrary to their nature, what defense will you have, when you have led out your own natural gentleness into a savagery contrary to your nature? and while showing what is wild by nature to be tame, you set up yourself, who are gentle by nature, as wild contrary to nature? and while you tame the lion and make it manageable, you render your own wrath fiercer than a lion? And yet in that case there are two hindrances: that the beast is deprived of reason, and that it is the most passionate of all creatures;
4:276
but nevertheless, by the abundance of the wisdom given you by God, you master even nature.
4:277
那麼你既能在野獸身上勝過本性,怎麼在自己身上,竟連同本性一起,也把自由抉擇的美善出賣了呢?倘若我吩咐的是要另一個人使自己變得溫和,即便如此,我也不算是在命令不可能的事;
You, then, who in the case of beasts overcome even nature, how is it that in your own case you betray, along with nature, also the nobility of your free choice? And if I had bidden another man to make himself gentle, not even so would I have seemed to enjoin things impossible;
4:278
yet in that case you might have put forward the plea that you are not master of another's will, nor does the whole matter lie in your own power.
4:279
But now it is your own beast, and one of which you are entirely master.
4:280
那麼你有甚麼可辯解的,又能提出甚麼冠冕堂皇的藉口呢?你把獅子造就成人,卻放任自己從人變為獅子?你把超乎本性的恩賜給了牠,卻連合乎本性的都不為自己保守?你竭力要把凶野的走獸提升到我們的尊貴,卻把自己從王權的寶座上推翻,趕入牠們的瘋狂?你若願意,就姑且把怒氣也當作一頭野獸;
What defense, then, have you, and what specious pretext will you be able to put forward, when you make a lion into a man, yet overlook yourself becoming from a man a lion? and while you bestow on it things above its nature, yet do not keep for yourself even the things according to nature? but strive to bring up wild beasts to our nobility, while you overthrow yourself from the throne of royalty and thrust yourself out into their madness? For suppose, if you will, that wrath too is a beast;
4:281
and as much zeal as others show about lions, so much show about yourself, and make such a reasoning tame and gentle.
4:282
For this too has grievous teeth and claws, and unless you tame it, it will destroy everything.
4:283
For not even a lion and a viper are able so to tear the vitals asunder, as wrath, doing this continually with its iron claws.
4:284
For it not only injures the body, but corrupts also the very health of the soul, devouring, tearing to pieces,
4:285
shredding all its power, and rendering it useless for everything.
4:286
For if one, nourishing worms in his entrails, will not even be able to breathe, all his inward parts being consumed by them, how, when we have so great a serpent as this gnawing away all that is within, namely wrath, shall we be able to bring forth anything noble? How then shall we be delivered from this ruin? If we drink a draught able to deaden the worms and serpents within.
4:287
有人問:這具有如此功效的飲品是甚麼呢?就是基督寶貴的血,只要以坦然無懼的信心領受;
And what, one asks, might be the draught that has this power? The precious blood of Christ, if it be received with boldness of confidence;
4:288
因為這血能撲滅一切疾病,並且伴隨著它的,還有殷勤細心地聆聽神的聖經,以及在聆聽之上再加以施捨賙濟;
for this will be able to quench every disease, and along with this the diligent hearing of the divine Scriptures, and almsgiving added to the hearing;
4:289
for through all these things the passions that injure our soul will be able to be put to death.
4:290
因為照如今的光景,我們的景況比死人好不了多少;
For as things now are, we are disposed no better than the dead;
4:291
since it is not possible, while those passions live, for us also to live, but we must needs perish.
4:292
我們若不趁著在此世趕緊將牠們殺死,牠們在那世界必定要殺死我們;
And unless we make haste to slay them here, they will assuredly slay us there;
4:293
or rather, even before that death, they will demand of us here too the uttermost penalty.
4:294
For each of such passions, being both savage and tyrannical and insatiable, and devouring us every day, never comes to a stand.
4:295
因為牠們的牙齒乃是獅子的牙齒;
For their teeth are the teeth of a lion;
4:296
or rather, even far more grievous.
4:297
因為獅子一旦吃飽,就離開那落在牠面前的軀體;
For the lion, as soon as it is glutted, also withdraws from the body that has fallen in its way;
4:298
but these passions neither are filled full, nor withdraw, until they have set the captured man near the devil.
4:299
For so great is their power, that the very servitude which Paul displayed toward Christ, despising for His sake both hell and the kingdom, this same they exact even from those they have captured.
4:300
For whether one fall into the love of bodies, or of money, or of glory, he thenceforth even laughs hell to scorn, and despises the kingdom, that he may accomplish the will of these passions.
4:301
Let us not, therefore, disbelieve Paul when he says that he so loved Christ.
4:302
因為既有些人被發現如此受私慾的奴役,那事又怎會顯得再難以置信呢?我們對基督的渴慕之所以較為軟弱,正是為此緣故:因為我們一切的力量都被耗費在這情慾上,我們搶奪、貪婪,又受虛浮榮耀的奴役;
For when some are found so enslaved to their passions, how shall that any longer seem incredible? For it is on this account that our longing for Christ is weaker, because all our power is consumed upon this lust, and we snatch, and are covetous, and are enslaved to empty glory;
4:303
than which what could be more worthless? For though you become renowned ten thousand times over, you shall be no better than the dishonored, but for this very reason all the more dishonored.
4:304
For when those who wish to glorify you and to make you illustrious laugh at you for this very thing, that you desire the glory that comes from them, how shall not the fruits of such zeal be turned into their opposite for you?
4:305
For the matter belongs to things that are censured.
4:306
因為正如一個人若稱讚並奉承那想要行姦淫或行淫亂的人,他就藉這事本身,反倒成了那貪求這等事之人的控告者,而非稱讚者;
For just as one who praises and flatters him that desires to commit adultery or fornication, by this very thing becomes rather an accuser than a praiser of him that desires such things;
4:307
so also him that desires glory, when we all praise him, we are rather accusers than praisers of those who wish to be glorified.
4:308
Why then do you draw to yourself the thing from which the opposite is wont to befall you? For if you wish to be glorified, despise glory, and you shall be more illustrious than all.
4:309
Why do you suffer the very thing that Nebuchadnezzar suffered? For he too set up an image, thinking to procure for himself, from the wood and the senseless form, an addition of good report, and the living one wished to appear more illustrious than the lifeless.
4:310
Did you see the excess of his madness? For while seeming to honor himself, he rather insulted himself.
4:311
For when he appears to trust in the lifeless thing rather than in himself and in the living soul within him, and on this account brings the wood to so high a place of precedence, how should he not be worthy of laughter, hastening to adorn himself not from his character, but from planks of wood? Just as if one, on account of the bench in his house and on account of the ladder that is beautiful, should think fit to pride himself rather on these than on his being a man.
4:312
This man many now imitate even among us.
4:313
因為正如他從那像,別人也照樣從衣裳,又有人從房屋,又有人從騾子和車輛,又有人從家中的柱子,就自以為理當受人稱羨;
For just as he from the image, so others from garments, and others from a house, and others from mules and carriages, and from the columns in their houses, deem it fit to be admired;
4:314
having lost the being of men, they go about gathering to themselves from elsewhere a glory laden with much laughter.
4:315
But the noble and great servants of God shone forth not from these things, but from the very things whence they least should have been expected to shine.
4:316
For being captives and slaves, young and strangers, and destitute of everything belonging to their own homeland, they then appeared far more august than he who was clothed with all these splendors.
4:317
在尼布甲尼撒身上,縱有那樣龐大的金像、有臣宰、有將帥、有無數的軍隊、有堆積如山的金子,以及種種排場,仍不足以滿足他的慾望,也不足以顯明他的偉大;
And for Nebuchadnezzar neither so great an image, nor satraps, nor generals, nor countless armies, nor a multitude of gold, nor any other display sufficed for his desire and to prove himself great;
4:318
but for these men, stripped of all such things, philosophy alone sufficed, and it showed those who possessed none of these to be more resplendent than he who wore the diadem and the purple and was clothed with such things, by as much as the sun is brighter than a pearl.
4:319
For they were led into the midst of the whole world, being young and captives and slaves; and as soon as they appeared, the king straightway darted fire from his eyes, and generals and prefects and governors and the devil's whole theater stood round about, and the sound of pipes and trumpets and every kind of music, borne up toward heaven, resounded in their ears; and the furnace was kindled to an immense height, and its flame reached the very clouds, and all was filled with terror and amazement.
4:320
然而這一切都沒有使他們驚惶失措;
But none of these things dismayed them;
4:321
rather, laughing them to scorn as at children at play, they displayed their manliness and their calm forbearance, and, sending forth a voice more resplendent than those trumpets, they said:
4:322
"Be it known unto thee, O king."
4:323
For they did not wish to insult the tyrant even so much as by a word, but only to display their piety.
4:324
所以他們並不長篇大論,只用寥寥數語便道盡了一切;
Wherefore they did not stretch out long speeches, but in brief they set forth all;
4:325
for "There is," he says, "a God in heaven able to deliver us."
4:326
Why dost thou show me the multitude? Why the furnace? Why the whetted swords? Why the fearsome spearmen? Higher than all these is our Master, and mightier.
4:327
Then, considering that it might come to pass that God should will and permit them to be burned, lest, if this should happen, they should seem to have spoken falsely, they add this also, saying: "But if it be not so, be it known unto thee that we do not serve thy gods."
4:328
For if they had said that on account of their sins He does not rescue them, then even should He not rescue them, they would have been disbelieved.
4:329
為此緣故,他們在此處對此事保持緘默;
For this reason, here they keep silence about this;
4:330
but they speak of it at the furnace, putting forward their sins up and down.
4:331
But before the king, nothing of the kind; only that even if they were about to be burned, they would not betray their piety.
4:332
因為他們所行的一切,並非為著報酬或回報,乃是單單出於愛;
For they did what they did not for reward or recompense, but out of love alone;
4:333
and this though they were even in captivity and in bondage, and had enjoyed nothing of good.
4:334
For indeed they had fallen away from fatherland and freedom and all that they possessed.
4:335
Do not, I pray, speak to me of the honors they had in the royal courts.
4:336
For being holy and righteous, they would ten thousand times rather have begged at home, and enjoyed the good things in the temple.
4:337
For "I have chosen," he says, "to be cast aside in the house of my God, rather than to dwell in the tents of sinners;"
4:338
and, "Better is one day in Thy courts than thousands."
4:339
Ten thousand times, therefore, would they have chosen to be cast aside at home, rather than to reign in Babylon.
4:340
And this is plain from the very things they declare even in the furnace, being burdened by their sojourn there.
4:341
因為縱使他們自己享有極大的尊榮,一看見別人的災禍,心中便痛徹不已;
For even if they themselves enjoyed much honor, when they beheld the calamities of the others they were exceedingly stung;
4:342
which is above all the peculiar mark of the saints:
4:343
to prefer neither glory, nor honor, nor anything else, above the salvation of one's neighbor.
4:344
See, then, how, being in the furnace, they made supplication on behalf of the whole people.
4:345
But we, not even when at ease, make mention of our brethren.
4:346
當他們探求那些夢的時候,所顧念的並非自己的利益,乃是眾人的利益;
And when they sought out the dreams, they had regard not to their own concern, but to that of the many;
4:347
for that they despised death, they afterward showed by many proofs.
4:348
And everywhere they put themselves forward, wishing to entreat God.
4:349
接著,由於他們認為連自己也不足夠,便投靠於列祖;
Then, since they deemed even themselves insufficient, they take refuge in the fathers;
4:350
yet they said that they themselves brought nothing more than a contrite spirit.
4:351
These, then, let us also emulate.
4:352
For even now there stands a golden image, the tyranny of mammon.
4:353
但願我們不去理會那些手鼓、笛子、琴瑟,以及財富其餘的種種排場;
But let us give no heed to the timbrels, nor to the flutes, nor to the harps, nor to the rest of wealth's display;
4:354
rather, even if it be needful to fall into the furnace of poverty, let us choose it, so as not to worship that image, and there shall be a dew whistling in the midst.
4:355
Let us not, therefore, shudder when we hear of the furnace of poverty.
4:356
For at that time also those who fell into the furnace were shown to be more resplendent, while those who worshiped were destroyed.
4:357
只是那時這一切都是同時發生的;
But then all these things happened together;
4:358
whereas now some things will be here, and others there, and others both here and in the day to come.
4:359
因為那些為了不敬拜瑪門而揀選貧窮的人,無論在今世或在來世,都必更加光耀;
For those who, in order not to worship mammon, have chosen poverty, will be more resplendent both here and hereafter;
4:360
but those who grow rich here unjustly will then pay the uttermost penalty.
4:361
拉撒路也是從這樣的窯爐中出來的,其光耀不亞於那幾個少年人;
From this furnace also Lazarus came forth, no less resplendent than those youths;
4:362
while the rich man, in the rank of those who worshiped the image, was condemned in hell.
4:363
For indeed the things spoken of are a type of those.
4:364
正如在那件事上,墮入火中的人毫髮無傷,而坐在外面的人反被烈焰以極猛之勢奪去;
As, then, in that case those who fell in suffered nothing, while those who sat outside were snatched away with great violence;
4:365
照樣,聖徒行過那火河的時候,也必不受任何苦楚,反倒容光煥發;
so the saints, walking through the river of fire, will suffer nothing distressing, but will even appear radiant;
4:366
but those who worshiped the image will see the fire leaping upon them, fiercer than any wild beast, and dragging them within.
4:367
So that if anyone disbelieves in hell, let him, beholding this furnace, believe from things present in things to come, and let him not fear the furnace of poverty, but the furnace of sin.
4:368
因為前者乃是火焰與痛苦,後者卻是涼露與安舒;
For the one is flame and anguish, but the other is dew and refreshment;
4:369
and by that furnace stands the devil, but by this one, angels shaking off the flame.
4:370
Let the rich hear these things, they who kindle the furnace of poverty.
4:371
因為他們絲毫不能傷害那些窮人,反有涼露臨到窮人身上;
For they will in no way harm those men, since the dew comes to them;
4:372
but they render themselves an easy prey to the flame which they have kindled with their own hands.
4:373
所以在那時,有一位天使與那幾個少年人一同降下;
At that time, then, an angel descended together with those youths;
4:374
如今就讓我們與那些在貧窮窯爐中的人一同下去,藉著施捨造出涼露,抖散火焰,好使我們也得以有分於他們的冠冕;
but now let us go down together with those who are in the furnace of poverty, and through almsgiving let us make a dew, and shake off the flame, that we too may become partakers of their crowns;
4:375
that the voice of Christ may also scatter the flame of hell, the voice which says:
4:376
"I saw thee hungry, and ye fed Me."
4:377
For this voice will then stand by us in place of dew, whistling through the midst of the flame.
4:378
所以,讓我們帶著施捨下到貧窮的窯爐中;
Let us go down, therefore, with almsgiving into the furnace of poverty;
4:379
讓我們觀看那些愛慕真智慧的人在其中行走,踐踏著炭火;
let us behold those who love wisdom walking in it, and treading on the coals;
4:380
let us behold the new and marvelous wonder, a man singing psalms in a furnace, a man giving thanks in the fire, bound fast to utmost poverty, and bearing much praise to Christ.
4:381
For those who bear poverty with thanksgiving become equal to those youths.
4:382
For poverty is more fearful than fire, and is wont to consume more fiercely.
4:383
But it did not consume those youths; rather, since they confessed their thanks to the Master, their bonds also were straightway loosed for them.
4:384
如今也是如此,你若墮入貧窮而仍獻上感恩,你的捆綁便得鬆開,火焰也得熄滅;
So also now, if having fallen into poverty thou give thanks, both thy bonds are loosed and the flame is quenched;
4:385
縱使火焰未曾熄滅,更為奇妙的是,那火竟不再是烈焰,反而化為泉源;
And even if it is not quenched, what is far more marvelous, instead of a flame it becomes a fountain;
4:386
and in the midst of the furnace they enjoyed a pure dew.
4:387
For the fire did not quench its own burning, yet it was prevented from consuming those who had been cast into it.
4:388
這同樣的情形,也可在那些操練真智慧(愛慕屬靈之道)的人身上看見;
This same thing one may also observe in the case of those who practice true wisdom;
4:389
for even in poverty they are disposed more free from fear than the rich.
4:390
Let us not, then, sit outside the furnace, being merciless toward the poor, lest we suffer the very thing which those men suffered at that time.
4:391
因為你若下到他們那裡,與那些少年人一同站立,那火就再不能加害於你;
For if you go down to them and stand together with the children, the fire will no longer do you any harm;
4:392
but if, sitting up above, you overlook them in the flame of poverty, the flame will burn you up.
4:393
所以,你要下到火中,免得你被火燒毀;
Go down, therefore, into the fire, that you may not be burned up by the fire;
4:394
do not sit outside the fire, lest the flame snatch you away.
4:395
因為那火若看見你在窮人當中,就必離你而去;
For if it sees you among the poor, it will withdraw from you;
4:396
but if it sees you estranged from them, it will run swiftly upon you and snatch you away.
4:397
所以,當他們被投入火中時,你不要與他們分離;
Do not, therefore, stand apart from them when they are cast in;
4:398
but when the devil commands that those who have not worshipped the gold be cast into the furnace of poverty, become not one of those who cast in, but one of those who are cast in, that you may be among those who are saved, and not among those who are burned.
4:399
For this too is a mighty dew: not to be held fast by the desire of wealth, and to keep company with the poor.
4:400
These are more abundantly supplied than all others, they who have trampled underfoot the desire of wealth.
4:401
Since those men too, when they then despised the king, became more resplendent than the king.
4:402
You too, therefore, if you disdain the affairs that are in the world, will be more precious than the whole world, after the example of those saints, of whom the world was not worthy.
4:403
In order, then, that you may become worthy of the heavenly things, laugh to scorn the things that are present.
4:404
For thus you will be both more resplendent here, and will enjoy the good things to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might unto the ages of ages.
