耶穌離開那地方,進了他們的會堂;
And departing thence, He came into their synagogue;
40:2
and behold, there was a man having a withered hand.
40:3
Again He heals on the Sabbath, making a defense for what had been done by His disciples.
40:4
And the other evangelists say that He set the man in the midst and asked them whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.
40:5
Behold the tender compassion of the Master.
40:6
祂叫他站在當中,好使他們一見便回心轉意;
He set him in the midst, that by the very sight He might bend them;
40:7
that, being broken down by the sight, they might cast out their wickedness, and, standing in awe of the man, might cease from their savagery.
40:8
But the untamed and man-hating men rather chose to injure Christ's glory than to see this man saved, in both ways displaying their wickedness—both in warring against Christ, and in doing so with such contentiousness that they grudged even the benefits done to others.
40:9
其他福音書作者說,是祂自己發問的;
Now the other evangelists say that it was He Himself who asked;
40:10
"And they asked Him," it says, "saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days? that they might accuse Him."
40:11
But it is likely that both took place.
40:12
For being defiled men, and knowing that He would by all means proceed to the healing, they hastened to forestall Him with their question, expecting by this means to hinder Him.
40:13
Wherefore they also asked, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days?—
40:14
not that they might learn, but that they might accuse.
40:15
其實,倘若他們真想控告,這行為本身已經足夠了;
And yet the deed would have sufficed, if indeed they wished to accuse;
40:16
but they wished to find a handle by His words as well, preparing for themselves an abundance of pretexts.
40:17
But He who loves mankind does this also, and answers, teaching His own gentleness, turning the whole matter back upon them, and showing their inhumanity.
40:18
祂又叫那人站在當中;
And He sets the man in the midst;
40:19
not because He feared them, but hastening to profit them, and to cast them into pity.
40:20
But when not even thus did He bend them, then, it says, He was grieved and was angry with them for the hardness of their heart, and says:
40:21
What man shall there be among you, who shall have one sheep, and if this fall into a pit on the Sabbath days, will he not lay hold of it and lift it out? How much then does a man differ from a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.
40:22
For, that they might have no ground for shamelessness, nor again charge Him with transgression, He reasons them down by means of this example.
40:23
But consider with me how variously and suitably He everywhere brings forward His defenses concerning the loosing of the Sabbath.
40:24
在那瞎子的事上,當祂和泥抹眼時,祂甚至沒有向他們辯護;
For in the case of the blind man He does not even defend Himself to them, when He made the clay;
40:25
and yet then too they accused Him, but the manner of the creating sufficed to show the Master of the law.
40:26
至於那癱子的事上,當他拿起褥子而他們控告祂時,祂時而以神的身分、時而以人的身分為自己辯護;
But in the case of the paralytic, when he took up his bed and they accused Him, He defends Himself now as God, now as man;
40:27
as man, when He says, If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the law be not broken (and He did not say, that a man be profited), are you angry with Me because I made a whole man sound?—and as God, when He says:
40:28
My Father works until now, and I work.
40:29
And when accused on behalf of His disciples, He said:
40:30
Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, he and they that were with him? how he entered into the house of God, and ate the shewbread? And He brings forward the priests also into the midst.
40:31
And here again, that It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath, or to do evil? Which of you shall have one sheep? For He knew their love of money, that they were rather this than lovers of men.
40:32
另一位福音書作者又說,祂問這些話時周圍觀看,好用祂的目光來吸引他們;
And yet the other Evangelist says that He also looked round about while asking these things, so as to draw them by His very glance;
40:33
but not even so did they become better.
40:34
And yet here He only speaks, but elsewhere in many places He uses His hands also.
40:35
然而這一切都沒有使他們變得柔和;
But nevertheless none of these things made them meek;
40:36
rather the man was healed, but they by his healing became worse.
40:37
因為祂本想在醫治那人之先醫治他們,並藉著先前所行的和所說的,運用了無數的醫治之法;
For He indeed wished to heal them before that man, and set in motion countless modes of healing, both by the things He did before and by the things He said;
40:38
but since they were now sick past cure, He proceeded to the deed.
40:39
And He stretched it forth, and it was restored whole, like the other.
40:40
What then did those men do? They go out, it says, and take counsel to destroy Him.
40:41
For the Pharisees, it says, went out and took counsel against Him, how they might destroy Him.
40:42
Having suffered no wrong, they set about to slay Him.
40:43
So great an evil is envy.
40:44
For it wars not only against strangers, but ever against its own as well.
40:45
And Mark says that they took this counsel together with the Herodians.
40:46
What then did the meek and gentle One do? He withdrew when He learned these things.
40:47
But Jesus, knowing their devices, withdrew, it says, from thence.
40:48
Where then are they who say that signs ought to be wrought? For by these things He showed that the ungrateful soul is not persuaded even by this means, and made it plain that they accused the disciples too without cause.
40:49
然而這一點我們必須留意:他們最是因鄰舍所蒙的恩惠而變得兇暴;
Yet this it behooves us to observe, that they are most of all made savage at the benefits done to their neighbors;
40:50
and whenever they see any one delivered either from disease or from vice, then they both accuse and are made like wild beasts.
40:51
因為當祂將要拯救那妓女時,他們就毀謗祂;
For indeed, when He was about to save the harlot, they reviled Him;
40:52
當祂與稅吏一同喫飯時也是如此;
and when He ate with publicans;
40:53
and now again, since they saw the hand restored.
40:54
But consider with me how He does not withdraw from His care for the sick, and consoles their envy.
40:55
有許多人跟著祂,祂把他們的病都治好了;
And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all;
40:56
and He charged those who were healed that they should make Him known to no one.
40:57
因為群眾在各處都又稀奇又跟從;
For the multitudes everywhere both marvel and follow;
40:58
but those men do not desist from their wickedness.
40:59
Then, that you might not be troubled at the things that happen, and at the strangeness of their madness, He brings in the prophet also, foretelling these things.
40:60
眾先知是何等的周詳準確,以致連這些事也不遺漏,反而連祂的行程、遷移,以及祂行這些事所存的心意都預言了;
For so great was the exactness of the prophets, that they omitted not even these things, but prophesied both His journeys and His removals, and the mind with which He did these things;
40:61
that you might learn that they uttered all things by the Spirit.
40:62
For if it is impossible to know the secrets of men, much more was it impossible to learn the purpose of Christ, unless the Spirit had revealed it.
40:63
What then does the prophet say? He goes on to add:
40:64
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
40:65
Behold My Servant, whom I have chosen; My beloved, in whom My soul is well pleased.
40:66
I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall declare judgment to the Gentiles.
40:67
祂不爭競,不喧嚷,街上也沒有人聽見祂的聲音;
He shall not strive, nor cry aloud, neither shall any one hear His voice in the streets;
40:68
壓傷的蘆葦,祂不折斷;將殘的燈火,祂不吹滅;等祂施行公理,叫公理得勝;
a bruised reed He shall not break, and smoking flax He shall not quench, till He send forth judgment unto victory;
40:69
and in His name shall the Gentiles hope.
40:70
He extols His meekness and His unspeakable power, and opens to the Gentiles a great and effectual door, and foretells the evils that were to overtake the Jews, and shows His concord with the Father.
40:71
For behold, it says, My Servant, whom I have chosen; My beloved, in whom My soul is well pleased.
40:72
But if He chose Him, then it is not as one opposing that He looses the law, nor as being an enemy of the Lawgiver, but as being of one mind with Him and doing the same things.
40:73
Then, proclaiming His gentleness, he says:
40:74
He shall not strive, nor cry aloud.
40:75
因為祂本願意醫治他們;
For He indeed desired to heal them;
40:76
but when they thrust Him away, not even against this did He strive.
40:77
And showing both His own strength and their weakness, He says:
40:78
A bruised reed He shall not break.
40:79
因為要像折斷蘆葦一般粉碎他們眾人,原是輕而易舉的;
For indeed it would have been easy to shatter them all like a reed;
40:80
and not simply a reed, but one already bruised.
40:81
And smoking flax He shall not quench.
40:82
在此,祂既陳明他們燃起的怒火,也顯明自己的能力足以消解他們的怒氣,並輕而易舉地將其撲滅;
Here He sets forth both their kindling wrath, and His own strength, which is sufficient to dissolve their wrath and to quench it with all ease;
40:83
whence His great forbearance is shown.
40:84
What then? Shall these things be forever? And will He endure to the end those who thus plot against Him and...
40:85
but when He has displayed what is His own, then He will also accomplish those other things.
40:86
For this He indicated when He said:
40:87
Until He send forth judgment unto victory;
40:88
and in His name shall the Gentiles hope;
40:89
even as Paul also says:
40:90
Being ready to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
40:91
But what does it mean, When He shall send forth judgment unto victory? When He has fulfilled all that is His own, He says, then He will also bring in vengeance, even a perfect vengeance.
40:92
Then shall they suffer dread things, when the trophy stands resplendent, and His righteous claims prevail, and He leaves them not even a shameless pretext for contradiction.
40:93
For He is wont to call righteousness 'judgment.'
40:94
然而救恩的計劃並不僅止於此,即不僅止於懲罰那些不信的人;
But the matters of the divine economy shall not rest in this alone, namely in the punishing of those who disbelieved;
40:95
but He shall also draw the whole world unto Himself.
40:96
And in His name shall the Gentiles hope.
40:97
Then, that you may learn that this too is according to the mind of the Father, the prophet in his preface pledged this also together with the foregoing, saying:
40:98
My beloved, in whom My soul is well pleased.
40:99
For it is plain that the Beloved did these things also according to the mind of Him who loved Him.
40:100
Then was brought to Him one possessed with a demon, blind and dumb; and He healed him, so that the blind and dumb both spoke and saw.
40:101
那人本可藉以相信的兩條門路——視覺與聽覺——都被堵塞了;
He had blocked up each entrance through which that man was to believe, both sight and hearing;
40:102
yet nevertheless Christ opened both.
40:103
And the multitudes were amazed, saying:
40:104
Is not this the Son of David? But the Pharisees said:
40:105
This man does not cast out the demons, except by Beelzebul the prince of the demons.
40:106
他們其實又說了甚麼了不得的話呢?然而就連這話他們也不能容忍;
And yet what great thing had they uttered? But nevertheless not even this could they bear;
40:107
so, as I said before, they are ever stung by the benefactions bestowed on their neighbors, and nothing so grieves them as the salvation of men.
40:108
祂確實曾退去,讓那病痛得以緩解;
And indeed He had withdrawn, and given the affliction respite;
40:109
然而那惡念又重新燃起,因為又有恩惠施行了;
but again the evil was kindled, since again a benefaction had been wrought;
40:110
and they were even more indignant than the demon.
40:111
因為那鬼尚且離開了那身體,退去、逃遁,一聲不響;
For he indeed both departed from the body, and withdrew, and fled, uttering nothing;
40:112
but these men now attempted to slay Him, now to slander Him.
40:113
For since that did not succeed, they wished to injure His glory.
40:114
Such is envy, than which no wickedness could be worse.
40:115
因為姦淫之人至少還享得些許快樂,並在短時間內就完成了自己的罪;
For the adulterer at least reaps some pleasure, and in a brief time completes his own sin;
40:116
but the envious man punishes and torments himself before the one he envies, and never ceases from his sin, but is engaged in committing it continually.
40:117
For as a swine delights in mire, and demons in our hurt,
40:118
這人也照樣以鄰舍的災禍為樂;
so also this man rejoices in the evils of his neighbor;
40:119
倘若有甚麼不幸的事臨到,他那時才得安息、重新舒暢,把別人的災禍當作自己的歡愉,把別人的好處當作自己的災殃;
and if anything unpleasant befalls, then he takes rest and breathes again, accounting others' misfortunes as his own good cheer, and others' good things as his own evils;
40:120
and he considers not what might be sweet to himself, but what is grievous to his neighbor.
40:121
Are not such men, then, worthy to be stoned and beaten to death, like rabid dogs, like avenging demons, like the very Furies? For as beetles are nourished by dung, so also are these by others' misfortunes, being certain common enemies and foes of our nature.
40:122
And whereas others pity even an irrational beast when it is slaughtered,
40:123
你看見一個人蒙受恩惠,竟變得凶暴、戰慄、面色蒼白嗎?還有甚麼比這瘋狂更壞的呢?正因如此,娼妓和稅吏尚且能進神的國;
you, seeing a man receiving benefaction, grow savage and tremble and turn pale? And what could be worse than this madness? For this very reason harlots and publicans were able to enter into the kingdom;
40:124
but the envious, being within, went out.
40:125
For the sons of the kingdom, He says, shall be cast out.
40:126
那些人既脫離了手中的惡行,就得著了他們從未指望過的;
And those others, being delivered from the wickedness in their hands, obtained what they never expected;
40:127
but these lost even the good things they had.
40:128
因為正是這罪使人變作魔鬼;
For this is what makes a devil out of a man;
40:129
this fashions a savage demon.
40:130
頭一樁凶殺就是這樣發生的;
Thus the first murder came to pass;
40:131
thus afterward the earth, opening its mouth, received alive and destroyed Dathan and Korah and Abiram, and all that whole company.
40:132
然而有人或許會說,指責嫉妒原是容易的;
But one might say that to accuse envy is easy;
40:133
yet we must also consider how they shall be delivered from the malady.
40:134
How then shall we be delivered from this wickedness? If we consider that, just as for the...
40:135
犯了姦淫的人不可進入教會,照樣嫉妒的人也不可進入;
one who has committed fornication it is not lawful to enter into the church, so neither for the envious;
40:136
and much more for this one than for that.
40:137
因為如今它甚至看似無關緊要的小事;
For now it seems even a matter of indifference;
40:138
but if it become manifest that it is wicked, we shall easily withdraw from it.
40:139
所以要哭泣、要哀嘆;
Weep therefore and groan;
40:140
lament and beseech God.
40:141
Learn to be disposed toward it as toward a grievous sin, and to repent.
40:142
And if you be thus disposed, you shall quickly be delivered from the malady.
40:143
'And who does not know,' someone says, 'that envy is an evil thing?' No one, indeed, is ignorant of it.
40:144
Yet men do not hold the same opinion concerning fornication and adultery as they do concerning this passion.
40:145
那麼,何曾有人因嫉妒了別人而痛切地責備自己呢?何曾有人為這疾病懇求神,好叫神向他施恩憐憫呢?從來沒有一個人這樣做過;
When, then, has any man ever bitterly condemned himself for having envied another? When has anyone besought God concerning this sickness, that He might become merciful to him? No one, never;
40:146
but if a man fasts and gives a little silver to a poor person, though he be envious ten thousand times over, he thinks he has done nothing dreadful, all the while held fast by the most defiling of all passions.
40:147
Whence, then, did Cain become such a man? Whence Esau? Whence the sons of Laban? Whence the sons of Jacob? Whence the company of Korah and Dathan and Abiram? Whence Miriam? Whence Aaron? Whence the devil himself? IV
40:148
Together with these things, consider this also: that you do not wrong the one you envy, but rather thrust the sword against yourself.
40:149
For in what did Cain wrong Abel? Did he not send him off the more swiftly, and against his will, into the kingdom, while he himself was pierced through with ten thousand evils?
40:150
In what did Esau harm Jacob? Did not the one grow rich and enjoy ten thousand good things, while he himself was cast out of his father's house and wandered in a foreign land after that plot? And in what did Jacob's sons make Joseph worse off, even though they went as far as bloodshed? Did not they endure famine and were brought into extreme peril, while he became king over all Egypt? For by however much you envy, by so much the more do you become the procurer of greater blessings for the one you envy.
40:151
因為監察這些事的乃是神;
For it is God who oversees these things;
40:152
and when He sees the one who does no wrong being wronged, He rather exalts him and makes him illustrious by this very means, while He chastises you.
40:153
For if He does not suffer those who exult over their enemies to pass unpunished — 'Rejoice not,' He says, 'over the fall of your enemies, lest the Lord see it and it displease Him' —
40:154
much more will He not suffer those who envy men that have done them no wrong.
40:155
Let us, therefore, cut off this many-headed beast.
40:156
For many indeed are the forms of envy.
40:157
For if the one who loves those who love him has nothing more than the tax-collector, where shall he stand who hates one that has done him no wrong? And how shall he escape hell, becoming worse than the heathen? For this reason I am also exceedingly grieved, that we who are commanded to imitate the angels — nay rather, the Lord of the angels — are envious like the devil.
40:158
For much envy exists even in the Church, and rather among us than among those who are under authority.
40:159
Wherefore we must reason with our very selves.
40:160
For on what account, tell me, do you envy your neighbor? Because you see him enjoying honor and kindly words? Do you then not consider how much evil honors bring to those who do not give heed to themselves — lifting them up to vainglory, to conceit, to arrogance, to disdain, making them the more slothful?
40:161
And along with these evils, they also easily wither away.
40:162
因為這實在是最可悲的事:由尊榮所生的禍害卻長存不朽;
For this indeed is the most grievous thing: that the evils arising from it remain immortal,
40:163
while the pleasure, at the same moment as it appears, also flies away.
40:164
Is it, then, on account of these things that you envy? Tell me.
40:165
'But he has great authority with the ruler, and carries and conveys all things wherever he wills, and grieves those who offend him, and benefits those who flatter him, and possesses much power.'
40:166
These are the words of worldly men, and of those nailed fast to the earth.
40:167
For nothing will be able to grieve the spiritual man.
40:168
它究竟能對他施行什麼可怕的事呢?是要把他從尊位上革除嗎?那又如何呢?因為若是公義地革除,他反倒得了益處;
For what dreadful thing will it work against him? Will it depose him from his dignity? And what of that? For if it be done justly, he is even benefited;
40:169
因為再沒有什麼比不配地擔任聖職更觸怒神的了;
for nothing so provokes God as for one to exercise the priesthood unworthily;
40:170
但若是不義地革除,那罪責就仍歸到革除者身上,而不歸到被革除者身上;
but if it be done unjustly, the charge again falls upon that man, not upon this one;
40:171
for he who suffers something unjustly and bears it nobly gains thereby the greater boldness toward God.
40:172
Let us therefore not look to this — how we may be in positions of power, and in honors, and in authority — but how we may be in virtue and in the love of wisdom.
40:173
For positions of authority persuade men to do many things not
40:174
pleasing to God, and there is need of a very vigorous soul so as to use authority for its proper end.
40:175
因為那被剝奪了權柄的人,無論情願不情願,都被迫操練屬靈的智慧;
For he who is deprived of it practices the love of wisdom both willingly and unwillingly;
40:176
but he who enjoys it suffers something such as would befall a man dwelling with a comely and beautiful maiden, who received laws never to look upon her unchastely.
40:177
Wherefore it has cast many, even against their will, into insolence, and stirred up wrath, and taken away the bridle of the tongue, and torn open the door of the mouth, as though fanning the soul with a wind, and sinking the vessel into the uttermost depth of evils.
40:178
Do you then admire the man in such peril, and say he is to be envied? And of how great folly is this a mark? Consider, then, together with what has been said, how many enemies and accusers, and how many flatterers, this man has besieging him.
40:179
Are these things, then, tell me, worthy of felicitations? And who would say so? 'But he is held in good repute among the people,' someone says.
40:180
And what of that? For the people is surely not God, to whom he is about to render his account.
40:181
So that when you say 'the people,' you say nothing else than other reefs, and crags, and hidden rocks, and shoals.
40:182
For being in good repute among the multitude, by however much it makes one more brilliant, by so much the more does it bring greater dangers, cares, and despondencies.
40:183
For such a one is not able to breathe or to stand still at all, having so bitter a master.
40:184
And why do I speak of standing still and breathing? Even if such a one should have ten thousand right deeds, he enters the kingdom with difficulty.
40:185
For nothing is so wont to hurl men headlong as the glory that comes from the many, making men cowardly, ignoble, flatterers, hypocrites.
40:186
那麼,法利賽人究竟為了什麼緣故說基督被鬼附著呢?豈不是因為他們貪愛從眾人而來的虛榮嗎?至於眾人,又是從何處對祂作出了正確的判斷呢?豈不是因為他們沒有被這疾病所轄制嗎?因為再沒有,實在再沒有什麼比渴慕眾人的稱讚更使人不法、更使人失去理智的了;
For what reason, then, did the Pharisees say that Christ had a demon? Was it not because they desired the glory that comes from the many? And whence did the many bring in the right verdict concerning Him? Was it not because they were not held fast by this sickness? For nothing, nothing so makes men lawless and senseless as to gape after the glory of the many;
40:187
and nothing so makes men of good report and adamantine as to despise it.
40:188
Wherefore there is need of a very vigorous soul in one who is going to withstand so great a current and so violent a rush of the wind.
40:189
因為當這樣的人一帆風順時,他就把自己置於眾人之上;
For indeed, when he is prospering, he sets himself before all;
40:190
而當他遭遇相反的境遇時,他就恨不得把自己埋進地裡;
and when he endures the contrary, he wishes to bury himself in the ground;
40:191
and this is to him both hell and kingdom, whenever he becomes submerged beneath this passion.
40:192
Are these things, then, tell me, worthy of envy, and not rather of lamentations and tears? It is surely plain to everyone.
40:193
But you do the very same thing in envying one who is thus in good repute, as if a man, seeing another bound and scourged and dragged about by ten thousand wild beasts, should envy him his wounds and his stripes.
40:194
因為百姓有多少人,這人也就有多少捆鎖、多少主人;
For however many men the populace has, so many bonds does this man also have, so many masters;
40:195
and what is indeed the more grievous, that each one of them holds a different opinion, and they all cast votes concerning the things that befall the man who is their slave, examining nothing, but ratifying for themselves whatever may seem good to this man and to that.
40:196
Of what waves, then, of what surging sea are these things not more grievous? For such a one is puffed up all at once by pleasure, and again is easily plunged under, being ever in inconstancy, and never in tranquility.
40:197
因為在登臺演說、在言辭的競賽之前,他被焦慮和戰兢所轄制;
For before the theater and the contests of speaking, he is held fast in anxiety and trembling;
40:198
而在演說之後,他若非因沮喪而如同死了,就是又漫無節制地歡喜;
and after the theater, he either dies from despondency, or again rejoices without measure;
40:199
which is more grievous than grief.
40:200
因為快樂並不比憂愁為害更小,這從它施加在靈魂上的作為就顯明了;
For that pleasure is no lesser an evil than grief is plain from the effects it produces upon the soul;
40:201
for indeed it makes the soul light and buoyant and all a-flutter.
40:202
And this too one may see from the men of former times.
40:203
When, then, was David good? When he rejoiced, or when he was in straits? When was the people of the Jews good? When they groaned and called upon God, or when they rejoiced in the wilderness and worshipped the calf? Wherefore Solomon also, who most of all men knew what pleasure is, says:
40:204
'It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of laughter.'
40:205
Wherefore Christ also blesses some, saying, 'Blessed are they that mourn;'
40:206
and pronounces others miserable: 'For woe unto you that laugh, for you shall weep.'
40:207
因為在奢華安逸中,靈魂變得更加鬆散軟弱;
For in luxury the soul is more slack and effeminate;
40:208
but in mourning it is drawn together and is sober-minded, and from the whole
40:209
swarm of the passions it is set free, and becomes loftier and stronger.
40:210
那麼,我們既知道這一切事,就讓我們逃避從眾人而來的虛榮,以及由此而生的快樂,好叫我們得著那真實的、永遠長存的榮耀;
Knowing, then, all these things, let us flee the glory that comes from the many and the pleasure that arises from it, that we may attain the glory that is real and abides for ever;
40:211
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the might unto the ages of ages. Amen.
