你們這假冒為善的文士和法利賽人有禍了!因為你們侵吞寡婦的家產,假意作很長的禱告;
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers;
74:2
therefore ye shall receive the greater condemnation.
74:3
從此以後,祂便譏諷他們的貪食;
From this point onward He satirizes them for their gluttony;
74:4
and what is dreadful is that they gorged themselves not from the wealthy but from the widows, and ground down the poverty of those whom they ought rather to have relieved.
74:5
For they did not merely eat, but devoured utterly.
74:6
再者,他們那種牟利欺詐的手段更是可惡;
Then also the manner of their hucksterism was the more grievous;
74:7
For a pretence making long prayers.
74:8
因為凡行惡事的人,都是該受懲罰的;
For everyone who does some evil is worthy of punishment;
74:9
but he who takes his occasion from piety, and uses this as a cloak for his wickedness, is liable to a far more grievous chastisement.
74:10
And for what reason did He not depose them from office? Because the time did not yet permit it.
74:11
正因如此,祂暫且容讓他們;
For this cause He lets them alone for the present;
74:12
but by what He says, He renders the people proof against deception, that they may not be drawn into the same zeal because of the dignity of those men.
74:13
For since He had said, 'Whatsoever they bid you do, that do,'
74:14
He shows how much they corrupt, that it might not be supposed from that saying, among the unthinking, that He was entrusting everything to them.
74:15
Woe unto you, for ye shut up the kingdom before men.
74:16
For ye neither enter in yourselves, nor suffer them that are entering to go in.
74:17
But if to benefit no one is an accusation, what pardon can there be for actually harming and hindering? And what is the meaning of 'those that are entering in'? The fit and worthy ones.
74:18
因為當需要吩咐別人的時候,他們就把擔子弄得叫人擔不起;
For when it was needful to lay commands upon others, they made the burdens unbearable;
74:19
but when it was needful for themselves to do any of the things they ought, the very opposite: not only did they themselves do nothing, but—which is far worse in wickedness—they corrupted others also.
74:20
These are they who are called pestilences, who make it their business to destroy others, standing diametrically opposed to teachers.
74:21
For if it belongs to a teacher to save him that is perishing, then to destroy him that is about to be saved belongs to a plague.
74:22
Then again another charge:
74:23
因為你們走遍海洋陸地,勾引一個人入教;
For ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte;
74:24
既入了教,你們就使他成為地獄之子,比你們還加倍;
and when he is made, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves;
74:25
that is, not even the fact that they had scarcely and with countless toils netted him prompts them to spare him.
74:26
然而,凡是費力才得來的東西,我們反倒更加珍惜;
And yet we cherish the more greatly the things acquired with difficulty;
74:27
but you, not even this makes more forbearing.
74:28
Here He brings against them two accusations:
74:29
其一,他們對眾人的得救毫無用處,且要付出許多汗水,才能引來哪怕一個人;
one, that they are useless for the salvation of the many, and need much sweat so as to draw in even a single one;
74:30
其二,他們對於保守那已得之人一事,卻是懶惰怠慢的;
and the other, that they are slothful with respect to the safekeeping of him that has been gained;
74:31
or rather, not only slothful, but even betrayers, corrupting him through the wickedness of their lives and making him worse.
74:32
For when the disciple sees his teachers to be such as these, he becomes worse.
74:33
因為他不會止步於他師傅的惡行之限度;
For he does not stop at the measure of his teacher's wickedness;
74:34
but when the teacher is virtuous, he imitates him,
74:35
But when a man is base, he even goes beyond, because of the ease with which he slides toward the worse.
74:36
And He calls him a son of hell, that is to say, hell itself embodied.
74:37
And He said, 'Twofold more than yourselves,' in order both to strike fear into those disciples and to lay hold of these teachers more severely, because they are instructors in wickedness.
74:38
And not only this, but also that they are zealous to instil yet more evil into their disciples, grinding them down into a wickedness far greater than their own.
74:39
And this is most characteristic of a thoroughly corrupted soul.
74:40
Then He also mocks them for their folly, because they were bidding men to despise the weightier commandments.
74:41
And yet He was saying the opposite before, namely, that 'They bind heavy burdens and hard to bear.'
74:42
But they did these things too again, and did everything to the ruin of those subject to them, seeking exactness in the little matters while despising the great ones.
74:43
'For you tithe,' He says, 'mint and dill, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, judgment and mercy and faith.'
74:44
'These you ought to have done, and not to have left the others undone.'
74:45
所以在此處,凡涉及十一奉獻與施捨的地方,祂這樣說是合宜的;
Here, then, He speaks fittingly, where there is question of tithing and of almsgiving;
74:46
因為施捨有甚麼害處呢?只是不當像守律法那樣去做;
for what harm is there in giving alms? Yet not as men keeping it as a law;
74:47
for neither does He Himself speak thus.
74:48
正是為這緣故,祂在此處才這樣說;
For this very reason, then, here He says this;
74:49
but where He discourses concerning clean and unclean things, He no longer adds this, but makes a distinction, and shows that the outward purity necessarily follows upon the inward.
74:50
因為在涉及慈愛憐憫的地方,祂就漠然略過,一則正是為了這緣故,二則因為那時還不是明白清楚地廢除律法上規條的時候;
For where the matter was one of loving-kindness, He passes it by indifferently, both on this very account, and because it was not yet the time to abolish the legal observances expressly and plainly;
74:51
but where there is the observance of bodily purifications, He overturns it more plainly.
74:52
For this reason, then, in the case of almsgiving He says:
74:53
「這是你們當行的,那也是不可不行的」;
'These you ought to have done, and not to have left the others undone';
74:54
但在潔淨之事上卻不是如此;
but in the case of the purifications it is not so;
74:55
but what then? 'You cleanse,' He says, 'the outside of the cup and of the platter;'
74:56
'but inside they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.'
74:57
'Cleanse first the inside of the cup, that the outside also may become clean.'
74:58
And He took His illustration from a matter acknowledged and evident, from a cup and a platter.
74:59
接著,祂指明輕看肉身的潔淨並無害處,反倒是不顧念靈魂的潔淨——就是德行——才招來最大的刑罰。祂稱這些肉身的潔淨為蚊蟲,因為它們是微小而算不得甚麼的;
Then, showing that there is no harm from despising the bodily purifications, but the greatest punishment from taking no thought for the purifications of the soul, which are virtue, He called these latter a gnat, for they were small and nothing;
74:60
but He called those matters a camel, for they were intolerable to bear.
74:61
'Straining out the gnat, and swallowing the camel.'
74:62
因為就連那些小事也是為了這些大事而立法的,是為了憐憫與公義;
For indeed those little things too were enacted for the sake of these, for the sake of mercy and judgment;
74:63
so that not even then did they profit when they were done alone.
74:64
For when the little things had been enjoined for the sake of the great, and then the great were neglected while these alone were pursued with zeal, there was nothing gained from this even at that time.
74:65
因為那些大事並不隨著這些小事而來;
For upon these the others did not follow;
74:66
And He says these things, showing that even before grace came, these matters were not among the foremost, nor among the things earnestly to be sought, but the things being sought were others.
74:67
And if before grace such things were of this kind, much more, now that lofty precepts have come, are these things profitless, and one ought not to pursue them at all.
74:68
所以,邪惡無論在何處都是可怕的;
Everywhere, then, wickedness is a grievous thing;
74:69
尤其是當它連自己需要改正都不承認的時候;
but most of all when it does not even think itself in need of correction;
74:70
καὶ.
而更為可怕的,是當它竟以為自己足以糾正別人的時候;
and, what is yet more grievous, when it even supposes itself sufficient to correct others;
74:71
and it is this that Christ makes plain when He calls them blind guides.
74:72
For if not to think oneself in need of a guide is blindness, an utter calamity and misery,
74:73
then to wish oneself even to guide others—see to what a depth of the pit this leads.
74:74
And He said these things, hinting throughout at their madness for glory, and at their vehement disposition toward this disease.
74:75
For this became to them the cause of all their evils, namely, to do everything for display.
74:76
This it was that led them away from faith, and made them neglectful of true virtue, and persuaded them to busy themselves about bodily purifications alone, while they neglected the cleansings of the soul.
74:77
For this very reason, leading them toward true virtue and the purifications of the soul, He makes mention of mercy, and judgment, and faith.
74:78
因為這些正是維繫我們生命的事,這些正是潔淨靈魂的事,就是公義、對人的慈愛,以及真理;
For these are the things that hold together our life, these are the things that cleanse the soul: righteousness, loving-kindness toward men, truth;
74:79
前者引導我們趨向饒恕,不容我們對犯罪的人過分嚴厲,也不容我們不肯寬恕;
the one leading us to forgiveness, and not allowing us to be excessively harsh toward those who sin, nor unforgiving;
74:80
(因為這樣我們必獲雙重的益處,既成為愛人的人,自己也因此從萬有的神那裡蒙受豐盛的慈愛;)並使我們預備好與受欺壓的人一同擔當痛苦,且為他們伸冤;
(for thus we shall gain a double profit, both becoming lovers of mankind, and ourselves thereby enjoying much loving-kindness from the God of all;) and preparing us to suffer together with those who are wronged and to defend them;
74:81
and the other not permitting us to be deceivers and full of guile.
74:82
然而,當祂說「這是你們當行的,那也是不可不行的」時,祂並非在引入律法上的規條;
But neither when He says, 'These ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone,' does He speak as introducing a legal observance;
74:83
因為這一點我們在前面已經證明過了;
for this we demonstrated before;
74:84
祂論到盤子和杯子說「先洗淨杯盤的裡面,好叫外面也乾淨」時,也不是要引我們回到從前那瑣碎的挑剔;
nor, when He says concerning the platter and the cup, 'Cleanse the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside also may become clean,' does He lead us back to the old pettiness;
74:85
but on the contrary, He does everything to show that such pettiness is superfluous.
74:86
因為祂沒有說「連外面也要洗淨」,而是說「裡面」;
For He said not, 'Cleanse the outside also,' but, 'The inside;'
74:87
and that other thing altogether follows upon this.
74:88
再從另一層意思說,祂並不是在論杯子和盤子,而是在講論靈魂與身體;
And in another sense, He speaks not about a cup and a platter, but discourses concerning soul and body;
74:89
calling the outside the body, and the inside the soul.
74:90
But if in the case of the platter there is need of the inside, much more in your own case.
74:91
祂說:你們卻反其道而行;
But you do the contrary, He says;
74:92
你們謹守那些微小的、外在的事,卻忽略那些重大的、內在的事;
guarding the small things and those outside, you neglect the great things and those within;
74:93
由此便生出極大的損害,因為你們自以為已成全了一切,就藐視其餘的事;
whence the greatest harm arises, because, thinking that you have accomplished the whole, you despise the rest;
74:94
and despising them, you neither strive nor endeavor to set them right.
74:95
接著,祂再次因他們的虛榮而斥責他們,稱他們為粉飾的墳墓,並在這一切之上加上一句:「假冒為善的人哪」;
Then again He reproaches them for vainglory, calling them whitewashed tombs, and adding to all, 'Hypocrites;'
74:96
which is the cause of all their evils, and the ground of their destruction.
74:97
And He called them not simply whitewashed tombs, but declared them to be full of uncleanness and hypocrisy.
74:98
And these things He said, showing the cause on account of which they did not believe, namely, that they were full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
74:99
不僅基督如此,眾先知也不斷地作這樣的控告,說他們的官長強奪掠取,不按公義的準則審判;
And not Christ alone, but the prophets also continually bring these charges, that their rulers plunder, that they do not judge according to the standard of what is just;
74:100
and everywhere you would find that sacrifices are cast out, but these things are required.
74:101
因此,無論在律法的頒佈上,或在這控告上,都沒有甚麼新奇或稀罕之處;
So that there is nothing strange nor novel, either in the legislation, or in the accusation;
74:102
nor even in the image of the tomb.
74:103
For the prophet makes mention of it, and he too called it not simply a tomb, but 'Their throat is an open sepulchre.'
74:104
Such also are many men even now, adorned indeed on the outside, but filled within with all lawlessness.
74:105
Καὶ γὰρ καὶ νῦν τῶν μὲν.
因為即使在今日,外在潔淨的方式繁多,人對此也極為關切;
For even now the ways of outward purifications are many, and much is the concern for them;
74:106
but of those according to the soul, there is not even one.
74:107
然而,若有人剖開各人的良心,就必發現許多的蟲、膿血,和無法言喻的惡臭;
But if one were to lay open the conscience of each, he would find many worms and corruption, and unspeakable stench;
74:108
I mean, monstrous desires and wickednesses, which are more unclean than worms.
74:109
但那些人竟是如此,倒還不算太可怕,儘管這已是可怕的了;
But that those men should be such is not so terrible, although it is terrible;
74:110
yet that you, who have been counted worthy to become temples of God, should suddenly become tombs, having so great a stench, this is the utmost misery.
74:111
在基督所居住、聖靈所運行、如此眾多的奧祕在其中成就的地方,這竟成了墳墓,這是何等的可悲呢?當基督的肢體成了污穢的墳墓時,這該引起何等的哀哭與號咷呢?你當思想自己是怎樣被生的,蒙了何等的看為配得,領受了何等的袍子,怎樣被建造成一座堅不可摧的殿,何等的美好;
That where Christ dwells, and the Holy Spirit has wrought, and so great mysteries have been performed, this should be a tomb — of how great misery is this? Of how many lamentations and wailings, when the members of Christ become a tomb of uncleanness? Consider how you were begotten, of what things you were counted worthy, what manner of robe you received, how you were fashioned into an unbreakable temple, how beautiful;
74:112
not adorned with gold, nor with pearls, but with the Spirit that is more precious than these.
74:113
你當思想,沒有一座墳墓是建在城裡的;
Consider that no tomb is built within a city;
74:114
therefore neither will you be able to appear in the city above.
74:115
For if this is forbidden here, much more is it forbidden there.
74:116
更確切地說,就是在此處,你也已成了眾人的笑柄,因你隨身帶著一個已死的靈魂;
Or rather, even here you are an object of ridicule to all, carrying about a dead soul;
74:117
and not only ridiculous, but also one to be shunned.
74:118
For tell me: if a man were to go about carrying a dead idol, would not everyone spring away from him? would not all flee? Think of this now too.
74:119
For you go about carrying a sight far more grievous than that: a soul deadened by sins, a soul stricken with palsy.
74:120
Who then will have pity on such a one? For when you yourself do not pity your own soul, how shall another pity one who is thus cruel and hostile toward himself, indeed his own enemy? If someone were to bury a dead body in the place where you sleep and dine, what would you not do? Yet you bury a dead soul, not where you take your meals, nor where you sleep, but in the very members of Christ; and are you not afraid lest ten thousand thunderbolts and lightnings be hurled down from above upon your head? And how do you even dare to set foot in the churches of God and in the holy temples, reeking within of so great an abomination? For if a man carrying a corpse into the royal palace and burying it there would pay the uttermost penalty,
74:121
you who set foot within the sacred precincts and fill the house with so great a stench, consider what punishment you will undergo.
74:122
當效法那位妓女,她用香膏抹了基督的腳,使滿屋充滿了馨香之氣;
Imitate that harlot who anointed Christ's feet with ointment and filled the whole house with fragrance;
74:123
whereas you do the very opposite in the house.
74:124
然而縱使你自己聞不到那惡臭,又如何呢?這正是這病症最可怕之處;
For what if you yourself do not perceive the stench? This is precisely what is grievous in the disease;
74:125
for this reason your sickness is incurable, and more grievous than those whose bodies are maimed and putrid.
74:126
因為那樣的病至少讓患者有所知覺,並且不受人的責備,反倒是值得憐憫的;
For that sickness at least gives the sufferers awareness of it, and bears no reproach, but is even worthy of pity;
74:127
but this one is worthy of hatred and of punishment.
74:128
Since then it is both more grievous than that, and grievous in this too, that the sufferer does not even perceive it as he ought, come, give yourself over to the word, that I may plainly teach you its ruinous nature.
74:129
But first hear what you say as you sing the psalm:
74:130
Let my prayer be set forth before Thee as incense.
74:131
那麼,當從你和你的行為所升起的不是馨香,而是一股惡臭的煙時,你豈不該承受一切的刑罰嗎?那麼這惡臭的煙究竟是甚麼呢?許多人進來時,四處張望,貪看婦女的美貌;
When, therefore, not incense, but a foul-smelling smoke rises up from you and from your deeds, what penalty are you not worthy to undergo? What then is this foul-smelling smoke? Many come in gazing round about at the beauty of women;
74:132
others busy themselves with the bloom of boys.
74:133
那麼你豈不驚奇,為何霹靂沒有落下,萬物沒有被連根拔起呢?因為所行的這些事,實在是配受霹靂與地獄的;
Then do you not marvel how it is that thunderbolts are not hurled down, and everything torn up from its foundations? For indeed the things that are done are worthy of thunderbolts and of hell;
74:134
but God, being long-suffering and of great mercy, holds back His wrath for a while, calling you to repentance and amendment.
74:135
人哪,你在做甚麼?你貪看婦女的美貌,竟不因如此褻瀆神的殿而戰慄嗎?教會在你看來竟成了妓院,比市場還不如嗎?因為在市場上,你尚且害怕、羞於被人看見你貪看婦女;
What are you doing, O man? You busy yourself with the beauty of women, and do not shudder at thus outraging the temple of God? Does the church seem to you to be a brothel, and less honourable than the marketplace? For in the marketplace you are afraid and ashamed to be seen ogling a woman;
74:136
然而在神的殿中,正當神親自向你說話、為這些事威嚇你之際,你竟在你聽見不可行這些事的那一刻,行淫、犯姦;
but in the temple of God, while God Himself is speaking to you and threatening you concerning these very things, you commit fornication and adultery at the very moment when you hear that you must not do these things;
74:137
and do you not shudder, nor stand aghast? These things the theatres of lewdness teach you: that plague hard to be stayed, those poisonous drugs, the grievous snares of the dissolute, the destruction of the licentious wrought amid pleasure.
74:138
For this reason the prophet also, bringing his charge, said:
74:139
Neither your eyes nor your heart is good.
74:140
這樣的人倒不如瞎了眼的好;
Better were it for such men to be blind;
74:141
better to be diseased, than to misuse the eyes for such purposes.
74:142
其實,你們本應在自己裡面有一道將你們與婦女隔開的牆;
Indeed, you ought to have within you the wall that separates you from the women;
74:143
但既然你們不肯,先賢們便認為有必要至少用這些木板把你們隔開;
but since you are not willing, the Fathers thought it necessary at least to partition you off with these boards;
74:144
for as I hear from the elders, of old there were not even these barriers.
74:145
For in Christ Jesus there is neither male nor female.
74:146
And in the time of the apostles too, men and women were together.
74:147
因為那時的男人真是男人,女人真是女人;
For the men were indeed men, and the women were women;
74:148
但如今卻恰恰相反:婦女們把自己推向了娼妓的作風;
but now it is quite the reverse: the women have thrust themselves into the manners of courtesans;
74:149
and the men are in no better state than maddened horses.
74:150
Have you not heard that men and women were gathered together in the upper room, and that assembly was worthy of the heavens? And with good reason.
74:151
For at that time women too practised much wisdom, and men practised gravity and self-control.
74:152
Hear, at any rate, the seller of purple, as she says:
74:153
If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide there.
74:154
Hear of the women who went about with the apostles, having taken up a manly resolve—of Priscilla, of Persis, and of the rest.
74:155
From these women the wives of the present day fall as far short as men fall short of those men of old.
74:156
因為在那個時代,婦女即使外出遠行,也不致招來惡名;
For in those days, even when they traveled abroad, they incurred no evil repute;
74:157
but now, even when kept in the inner chamber, they scarcely escape this suspicion.
74:158
And these things come about through adornments and luxurious living.
74:159
在那個時代,那些婦女所致力的乃是使福音的宣講得以廣傳;
In those days it was the business of those women to advance the preaching of the gospel;
74:160
but now their business is to appear shapely and beautiful and fair of face.
74:161
這在她們看來就是榮耀,就是救恩;
This is glory to them, this is their salvation;
74:162
but of lofty and great achievements they never so much as dream of taking thought.
74:163
有哪個婦人曾竭力使她的丈夫變得更好?又有哪個男子曾以此為念,要矯正他的妻子?一個也沒有;
What woman has ever taken pains to make her husband better? What man has ever made it his care to reform his wife? There is not one;
74:164
反而,妻子一切的熱心都在於料理金飾、衣裳,以及其餘身體的妝飾,並在於增添家業產業;
but the wife's whole zeal is for the care of gold and garments and the other adornments of the body, and for increasing her substance;
74:165
and to the husband belongs both this care and many others besides, yet all of them worldly.
74:166
Τίς.
有誰在將要娶親時,曾查問過那女子的品性與教養?一個也沒有;
Who, when about to marry, has ever inquired into a girl's character and upbringing? No one;
74:167
but straightway they ask about money and possessions, and the measure of her varied and diverse estate, just as though one were about to buy something, or to conclude some ordinary business transaction.
74:168
For this reason they even call marriage by such a name.
74:169
For I have heard many say:
74:170
"So-and-so has struck a bargain with such-and-such a woman"; that is to say, "He has married."
74:171
And they insult the gifts of God, and, as though buying and selling, so do they marry and are given in marriage.
74:172
And they require contracts needing greater security than those concerning selling and buying.
74:173
Learn how the men of old married, and be zealous to imitate them.
74:174
How then did those men marry? They sought after character and disposition, and the virtue of the soul.
74:175
正因如此,他們既不需要立契字據,也不需要那出於紙墨的保障;
For this reason they had no need of written contracts, nor of the security that comes from paper and ink;
74:176
for the bride's character sufficed them in place of all these things.
74:177
I therefore exhort you also, not to seek after money and abundance, but character and gentleness of disposition.
74:178
你要尋求一位敬虔、愛慕智慧的女子;
Seek a reverent and God-loving maiden;
74:179
and these things will be better for you than ten thousand treasures.
74:180
你若尋求神的事,這些別的事也必隨之而來;
If you seek the things of God, these other things too will come;
74:181
but if, passing those by, you run after these, not even these will follow you.
74:182
"But so-and-so," someone says, "became wealthy through his wife."
74:183
Are you not ashamed to bring forward such examples? May I be poor ten thousand times over, rather than gain riches from a wife.
74:184
還有什麼比那樣的財富更令人厭惡呢?還有什麼比這樣的豐裕更苦澀呢?還有什麼比因此出名、被眾人議論說「某人是靠妻子發財的」更羞恥呢?至於家中的種種不快,就是這事必然帶來的一切後果,我姑且略去不提;
For what is more distasteful than that kind of wealth? What is more bitter than such abundance? What is more shameful than to be conspicuous on this account, and to have it said of you by everyone, "So-and-so grew rich by his wife"? For I pass over the domestic vexations, all that must of necessity result from this;
74:185
the wife's arrogance, the servility, the quarrels, the reproaches of the household slaves:
74:186
「那窮光蛋、那衣衫襤褸的、那出身卑賤又世代低微的傢伙;
"The pauper, the ragged fellow, the base-born and sprung from base stock;"
74:187
他來時究竟帶了什麼?豈不是一切都是女主人的嗎?」然而你對這些話卻毫不在意;
"for what did he bring with him? Are not all things the mistress's?" But you care nothing for these words;
74:188
因為連那些食客幫閒,聽見比這更下賤的話,也不覺得痛苦;
since even the parasites hear things more contemptible than these, and are not grieved;
74:189
既然如此,這等人也照樣不覺痛苦,反倒以自己的羞恥為誇耀;
so then neither do these men grieve, but they even pride themselves on their disgrace;
74:190
and when we say these things to them, "Let it be," one replies, "something pleasant and sweet, and let it choke me to death."
74:191
What proverbs he has introduced into life, able to overturn the whole existence of such men!
74:192
Consider, then, this very devilish and destructive saying, with how much ruin it is laden.
74:193
For it says nothing else than these very words:
74:194
"Let there be no account with you of what is honorable, no account with you of what is just;"
74:195
Seek one thing only: pleasure.
74:196
Even if the matter should throttle you, let it still be your choice.
74:197
Even if all who meet you spit upon you, even if they smear filth in your face, even if they drive you off like a dog, bear it all.
74:198
And what else would swine say, had they been given a voice? What would unclean dogs say? Yet perhaps not even those creatures would have uttered such things as the devil has driven men to rave.
74:199
Therefore I exhort you, since you are aware of the senselessness of such sayings, to flee from proverbs of this sort, and to choose out those from Scripture which stand opposed to them.
74:200
And what are these? 'Do not go,' it says, 'after the desire of your soul, and turn away from your appetites.'
74:201
And again, concerning the harlot, it speaks in opposition to that proverb, saying:
74:202
'For honey drips from the lips of a harlot woman, who for a season makes your throat smooth;'
74:203
'yet in the end you will find her more bitter than gall, and sharper than a two-edged sword.'
74:204
Let us then listen to these words, not to those.
74:205
For from this source spring the ignoble, from this source the servile reasonings; from this source men become irrational, because everywhere they wish to pursue pleasure according to that proverb, which even apart from our words is on its own face ridiculous.
74:206
因為人一旦被噎死了,那甘甜還有什麼益處呢?所以你們要停止,不要再造成這麼大的笑柄,也不要點燃地獄與不滅的火;
For after one has been choked to death, what is the profit of the sweetness? Cease, then, from contriving so great a cause for laughter, and from kindling hell and unquenchable fire;
74:207
and let us, even if late at last, look clearly toward the things to come, casting off the rheum from our eyes, so that we may pass through this present life becomingly and with much gravity and reverence, and may attain unto the good things to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory unto the ages of ages.
