Now as these were departing, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John:
37:2
'What went you out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? But what went you out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, they that wear soft raiment are in kings' houses.'
37:3
'But what went you out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.'
37:4
因為就約翰的門徒而論,這事已經妥善安排了,他們既因方纔所行的神蹟得了確據,便去了;
For as regards the disciples of John, the matter was well ordered, and being confirmed they went away by reason of the signs that had just then taken place;
37:5
but it remained now also to heal what concerned the people.
37:6
因為那些門徒對於自己的老師斷不會起這樣的疑心;
For they indeed would have suspected no such thing concerning their own teacher;
37:7
but the great multitude, from the inquiry of John's disciples, would have surmised many strange things, not knowing the intent with which he sent the disciples.
37:8
And it was likely that they reasoned within themselves and said:
37:9
'He that testified so many things has now changed his mind, and is in doubt whether this be He, or another should be the Coming One? Can it be that he says these things out of rivalry against Jesus? Can it be that he has become more timid by reason of the prison? Can it be that in vain and at random he spoke his former words?' Since then it was likely that they suspected many such things, mark how He corrects their weakness, and does away with these suspicions.
37:10
For as they were departing, He began to say to the multitudes.
37:11
Why 'as they were departing'? That He might not seem to be flattering the man.
37:12
And in setting the people right, He does not bring their surmise into their midst, but only applies the solution to the reasonings that were troubling them in their mind, showing that He knew the secret things of all.
37:13
'Why do you think evil?' For even though they had such thoughts, they were reasoning these things not out of wickedness, but out of ignorance of the things that had been said.
37:14
因此祂並不用責備的口吻與他們說話,只是矯正他們的心思,並為約翰申辯;
For this reason He does not converse with them reprovingly, but only sets right their understanding, and makes a defense on John's behalf;
37:15
and He shows that John had not fallen away from his former opinion, nor had he changed.
37:16
For neither is he an easy and lightly swayed man, but firmly fixed and steadfast, and not such a one as to betray the things entrusted to him.
37:17
祂在確立這些事的時候,並不立刻憑自己的斷言,乃是先憑他們自己的見證;
And in establishing these things, He does so not at once out of His own declaration, but first from their own testimony;
37:18
not only by the things they said, but also by the things they did, showing that they themselves bore witness to his steadfastness.
37:19
'What went you out into the wilderness to see?' It was as though He said:
37:20
'Why did you all leave the cities and the houses and come together into the wilderness? That you might see some pitiable and easily-swayed man? But that would have no reason.'
37:21
For that eager zeal does not show this, nor the fact that all ran together into the wilderness.
37:22
For so great a people and so many cities would not with such great eagerness have poured forth then into the wilderness and to the river Jordan, unless you had expected to behold some great and marvelous man, firmer than a rock.
37:23
因為你們斷不是出去要看被風吹動的蘆葦;
For assuredly you did not go out to see a reed shaken by the wind;
37:24
for the easily swayed, and those readily carried about, and saying now these things, now those, and standing firm on nothing, most closely resemble this.
37:25
你且看祂如何撇開一切惡意,單抓住這件當時最潛伏在他們心底的事,除去那以為約翰輕浮的想法;
And mark how, setting aside every wickedness, He fixes upon this, the very thing that was then most lurking beneath among them, and does away with the supposition of fickleness;
37:26
'But what went you out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, they that wear soft raiment are in kings' houses.'
37:27
祂所說的乃是這意思:約翰在本性上就不是易被搖動的;
And what He says is of this sort: that from his very nature he was not easily swayed;
37:28
and this you yourselves made manifest by your eager zeal.
37:29
Nor, moreover, could anyone say this: that he was firm indeed, but afterward, having become a slave to luxury, grew soft and slack.
37:30
因為在人中間,有些人是本性就如此,有些人是後來變成如此的;
For of men, some are such from their very nature, and others become so;
37:31
for instance, one is by nature prone to anger, while another, having fallen into a long sickness, acquires this malady.
37:32
Again, some are fickle and light by nature, while others become so from being slaves to luxury and living softly.
37:33
祂說,約翰卻既不是本性如此;
But John, He says, was neither such by nature;
37:34
因為你們出去並不是要看蘆葦;
for you did not go out to see a reed;
37:35
nor, by giving himself over to luxury, did he lose the advantage which he possessed.
37:36
For that he was not a slave to luxury, his robe and the wilderness and the prison make manifest.
37:37
For if he had wished to wear soft garments, he would not have dwelt in the wilderness, nor in the prison, but in palaces.
37:38
For it was in his power, merely by keeping silent, to enjoy ten thousand honors.
37:39
For where Herod so reverenced him even when he reproved and was bound, much more would he have flattered him had he kept silent.
37:40
Since then in deed he gave proof of his steadfastness and endurance, how could it be just to suspect him in such matters?
37:41
And so, having characterized his disposition from the place, and from his garments, and from the concourse of people, He proceeds now to bring forward the prophet as well.
37:42
For having said, 'What went you out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet,' He says;
37:43
'for this is he of whom it is written:'
37:44
'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who shall prepare Your way before You.'
37:45
祂先放下猶太人的見證,然後才加上眾先知的見證;
First having set down the testimony of the Jews, then He applies that of the prophets;
37:46
更確切地說,祂先放下猶太人的判斷,這乃是極大的證據,因為那見證是出於仇敵之口;
or rather, first He sets down the Jewish verdict, which would be a very great proof, when the testimony is borne by enemies;
37:47
第二,是那人的生活;
second, the life of the man;
37:48
第三,是祂自己的斷定;
third, His own judgment;
37:49
fourth, the prophet, on every side stopping their mouths.
37:50
Then, lest they should say, 'What then, if he was indeed such at that time, but now has changed?' He added also the things that came after these: the garments, the prison, and along with these the prophecy.
37:51
Then, having said that he was greater than a prophet, He shows also in what respect he was greater.
37:52
In what respect then was he greater? In that he was near to Him who had come.
37:53
Ἀπο.
'For behold,' He says, 'I send My messenger before Your face;'
37:54
For just as, in the case of kings, those who ride near the royal chariot are more illustrious than the rest,
37:55
so he appears riding close to His very coming.
37:56
你看,主在此也如何顯明了他的卓越;
See how here too He set forth his pre-eminence;
37:57
and He does not even stop here, but henceforth adds His own verdict as well, saying:
37:58
'Verily I say unto you, among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist.'
37:59
And what He says means this:
37:60
No woman has borne a greater than this man.
37:61
單這句宣告本身就已足夠了;
And the pronouncement by itself indeed suffices;
37:62
but if you wish to learn it also from the facts, consider his table, his manner of life, the loftiness of his mind.
37:63
For he lived as though in heaven, and being raised above the necessities of nature, he trod a strange and wondrous path, spending all his time in hymns and prayers, and holding converse with no man, but with God alone continually.
37:64
他既沒有見過任何一個同作僕人的,也沒有被他們中的任何人看見;他不曾以乳汁哺育,不曾享用床鋪、屋頂、市集,或人間任何其他事物;
For neither did he see any of his fellow-servants, nor was he seen by any of them; he was not nursed with milk, he enjoyed not a bed, nor a roof, nor a market-place, nor any other of the things of men;
37:65
and yet he was at once gentle and vehement.
37:66
Hear then how with mildness he converses with his own disciples, how with manliness with the people of the Jews, how with boldness with the king.
37:67
'Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist.'
37:68
But lest again the excess of the praises should breed some absurdity, the Jews preferring him to Christ, observe how He corrects this too.
37:69
For just as, by the things whereby the disciples were edified, the multitudes were harmed, deeming Him to be an ordinary man,
37:70
so also from the things whereby the multitudes were being healed, the harm would have become greater, they taking up from what had been said a notion of him more august than of Christ.
37:71
Wherefore He corrects this also without exciting suspicion, saying:
37:72
'But he that is less in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.'
37:73
「最小」是就年歲而言,也是就眾人的看法而言;
Less in respect of age, and in respect of the opinion of the many;
37:74
因為他們竟稱祂為貪食好酒的人;
for indeed they called Him a gluttonous man and a wine-bibber;
37:75
and, 'Is not this the carpenter's son?' and everywhere they made Him of no account.
37:76
Was He then greater than John by way of comparison? Away with the thought!
37:77
因為約翰說「祂比我更有能力」時,也不是在作比較;
For neither does John, when he says, 'He is mightier than I,' speak by way of comparison;
37:78
nor does Paul, when making mention of Moses he writes, 'For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses,' write by way of comparison.
37:79
And He Himself, in saying, 'Behold, a greater than Solomon is here,' does not speak by way of comparison.
37:80
But if we should even grant that this was said by Him by way of comparison, it was done by way of condescension, because of the weakness of the hearers.
37:81
因為眾人對他實在是張口仰望、極為傾慕;
For the people were exceedingly agape after him;
37:82
and at that time the prison too had made him more illustrious, as had his boldness towards the king, and it was for the present a welcome thing that this should be accepted by the many.
37:83
For indeed the Old Testament also knows how to correct the souls of them that have gone astray in this way, comparing things incomparable by way of comparison:
37:84
'There is none like unto Thee among the gods, O Lord;'
37:85
and again, 'There is no god like our God.'
37:86
但有些人說,基督這話是指使徒說的;
But some say that Christ said this concerning the apostles;
37:87
for when men have turned aside from the truth, they are wont to wander much.
37:88
說到天使或使徒,又有甚麼一貫的道理呢?再者,祂若是指使徒說的,有甚麼攔阻祂指名提出他們呢?因為祂論到自己時,理當隱藏自己的身分,既因那仍然盛行的疑慮,又為免顯得是在論到自己說甚麼大事;
For what consistency is there in speaking either of angels or of apostles? And besides, if He were speaking of the apostles, what hindered Him from bringing them forward by name? For in speaking of Himself, He reasonably conceals His person, because of the suspicion still prevailing, and so as not to seem to say something great concerning Himself;
37:89
for indeed in many places He is seen doing this.
37:90
And what does 'in the kingdom of heaven' mean? Among things spiritual, and all things pertaining to heaven.
37:91
And His saying, 'Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John,' was the language of one contrasting John with Himself, and thus excepting Himself.
37:92
因為即使祂也是婦人所生的,卻不像約翰那樣;
For even if He too was born of a woman, yet not in the same manner as John;
37:93
for He was not a mere man, nor was He born in like manner with man, but by a strange and marvellous birth.
37:94
'And from the days of John the Baptist,' He says, 'until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.'
37:95
And what consistency has this with the things before spoken? Much indeed, and very harmonious.
37:96
因為從這話起,祂也催逼並激勵他們歸向對祂自己的信;
For henceforth from this too He urges and presses them on towards faith in Himself;
37:97
and at the same time He also bears witness in support of the things before said by John.
37:98
'It is fulfilled: I am He that should come.'
37:99
'For all the prophets and the law,' He says, 'prophesied until John.'
37:100
For the prophets would not have ceased, unless I had come.
37:101
Look therefore for nothing further, nor await any other.
37:102
For that I am He is plain both from the prophets having ceased, and from those who day by day seize the faith in Me.
37:103
For so plain and clear is it, that many even seize it by force.
37:104
And who seized it? Tell me.
37:105
All they that come with earnestness.
37:106
Then He sets down yet another proof, saying:
37:107
'If ye will receive it, this is Elijah, which is to come.'
37:108
'For I will send you,' He says, 'Elijah the Tishbite, who shall turn the heart of the father to the children.'
37:109
'This one, then, is Elijah, if ye attend with exactness,' He says.
37:110
For, 'I will send,' He says, 'My messenger before Thy face.'
37:111
And well did He say, 'If ye will receive it,' showing that it is not by compulsion.
37:112
And this He said, requiring a candid mind, and making it plain that this one is that other, and that other is this one.
37:113
For both undertook one ministry, and both became forerunners.
37:114
所以祂並不單單地說「這是以利亞」,而是說:「你們若肯領受,這人就是」;
Wherefore neither did He say simply, 'This is Elijah,' but, 'If ye will receive it, this is he;'
37:115
that is, if with a candid mind ye attend to the things that are done.
37:116
And He did not even stop here, but added, showing that there was need of understanding, in regard to the words, 'This is Elijah which is to come: he that hath ears to hear, let him hear.'
37:117
And so many enigmas He set forth, stirring them up to inquiry.
37:118
But if not even so were they roused, much less would they have been had the things been plain and clear.
37:119
For neither could one say this, that they durst not ask, and that He was hard of access.
37:120
因為那些為著尋常之事質問並試探祂、雖被駁倒過千萬次卻仍不罷休的人,若他們真渴慕受教,怎會不為著那些要緊的事發問求教呢?因為他們既為著律例上的事發問——如哪一條誡命為大,以及諸如此類的事,雖然這些本無必要說出——那麼對於祂所說的話(在這些話的答覆上祂反倒更擔負責任),他們怎會不去查究其中的意思呢?何況正是祂自己在催促、吸引他們如此行?因為祂說「努力的人就奪取它」,是要激起他們的熱心;
For they who questioned and tempted Him about ordinary matters, and though silenced ten thousand times yet desisted not, how would they not have inquired and asked about necessary things, if indeed they had desired to learn? For if concerning the ordinances they asked, which is the first commandment, and all such things—though there was no necessity to say these—how would they not have searched out the meaning of the things spoken by Him, of which He was the more responsible in His answers? And especially when He Himself was the one urging them to this, and drawing them on? For by saying, 'The violent take it by force,' He rouses them to zeal;
37:121
and by saying, 'He that hath ears to hear, let him hear,' He does this same thing.
37:122
'But to what shall I liken this generation?' He says.
37:123
'It is like unto children sitting in the market-place, and saying:'
37:124
'We piped to you, and you did not dance;'
37:125
'we mourned to you, and you did not lament.'
37:126
These words again seem to be disconnected from what precedes them, yet they follow very closely upon them.
37:127
因為祂仍然緊扣著同一個主題,並要證明約翰的行事與祂相合一致,雖然他們二人所行的彼此相反;
For He is still keeping to the same main theme, and to the demonstration that John was acting in harmony with Him, even though what each of them did was contrary to the other;
37:128
正如祂在回應那向祂提出的問題時所做的一樣;
just as He did also in the matter of the question put to Him;
37:129
並且祂表明,凡為他們的救恩所當行的,沒有一樣被忽略;
and He shows that nothing which ought to have been done for their salvation was omitted;
37:130
which is just what the prophet says concerning the vineyard:
37:131
'What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done for it?' 'For to what,' He says, 'shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplace, who say:'
37:132
'We piped to you, and you did not dance;'
37:133
'we mourned to you, and you did not lament.'
37:134
'For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say:'
37:135
'The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say:'
37:136
'Behold, a man who is a glutton and a wine-bibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'
37:137
Now what He means is this:
37:138
'Each of us, I and John, came by a contrary road, yet we did one and the same thing; just as if some hunters, when a quarry hard to catch is about to fall into the snares by two different ways, should each take up one of the roads and drive it on, standing over against one another, so that the beast must by all means fall into the one snare or the other.'
37:139
Consider, then, the whole race of mankind, how it is amazed at the marvel of fasting, and at this austere and philosophic manner of life.
37:140
For this reason it was so ordered that John should from his earliest years be nurtured in this way, in order that from this very fact the things spoken by him might be worthy of credit.
37:141
'And why then,' one may ask, 'did not He Himself choose this road?' Indeed, in the first place He too did walk in it, when He fasted the forty days, and went about teaching, and had no place where to lay His head.
37:142
But nevertheless, in another way also He was accomplishing this very same end, and was providentially securing the gain that came from it.
37:143
For it amounted to the same thing—or even to something far greater—as His having Himself walked in that road, that He should be borne witness to by the one who did walk in it.
37:144
此外,約翰所顯明的,不過是他的生活與行為而已;
Moreover, John displayed nothing beyond his manner of life and his conduct;
37:145
for 'John,' it is said, 'did no sign;'
37:146
but He Himself had also the testimony that comes from signs and from wonders.
37:147
Leaving John, therefore, to shine by his fasting, He Himself took the contrary road, going in to the tables of tax collectors, and eating and drinking.
37:148
Let us then ask the Jews:
37:149
Is fasting good and admirable? Then you ought to have obeyed John, and to have received him, and to have believed the things spoken by him.
37:150
For in this way those very words would have brought you to Jesus.
37:151
But is fasting burdensome and grievous? Then you ought to have obeyed Jesus, and to have believed Him who came by the contrary road.
37:152
For by either road you were destined to fall into the kingdom.
37:153
But like an intractable wild beast, you reviled them both.
37:154
The blame, therefore, did not lie with those who were not believed, but it was an accusation against those who did not believe.
37:155
For no one would ever choose to censure opposite things, just as neither would he praise them both.
37:156
那贊許歡愉隨和之人的,必不贊許那陰沉嚴峻之人;
He who approves of the cheerful and easy-going man will not approve of the sullen and severe one;
37:157
and he who praises the sullen one will not praise the cheerful one.
37:158
For it is impossible to cast one's vote both for the one and for the other.
37:159
For this reason He Himself also says:
37:160
'We piped to you, and you did not dance;'
37:161
that is, 'I set before you the easy-going life, and you were not persuaded.'
37:162
'And, We mourned, and you did not lament;'
37:163
that is, 'John pursued the austere and severe life, and you gave no heed.'
37:164
And He does not say, 'He piped this, and I piped that;'
37:165
but since the purpose of both was one, even though their practices were contrary, for this reason He says that what was done was shared in common.
37:166
For indeed the very going by the contrary road came about from a concerted harmony, and one that looked toward a single end.
37:167
'What defense, then, could you henceforth have?' Therefore He also added:
37:168
'And wisdom was justified by her children;'
37:169
that is, 'Even if you were not persuaded, yet you can no longer bring a charge against me.'
37:170
which is just what the prophet says concerning the Father:
37:171
'That You may be justified in Your words.'
37:172
For God, even though He should accomplish nothing further by His care for us, yet fulfills all that pertains to Himself, so that to those who wish to be shameless He may leave not even the shadow of an unreasonable excuse.
37:173
但若這些比喻顯得卑微、不甚體面,你不要驚訝;
But if the illustrations be lowly and of ill repute, do not marvel;
37:174
for He was speaking with a view to the weakness of the hearers.
37:175
Since Ezekiel too uses many illustrations that are suited to them, and unworthy of the majesty of God.
37:176
But this very thing is especially worthy of His providential care.
37:177
Observe them, moreover, from another side too, how they were carried about into contrary opinions.
37:178
因為他們論到約翰,說他是被鬼附著的,卻不僅止於此,反倒論到那揀選相反之路的祂,又照樣說了同樣的話;
For having said concerning John that he had a demon, they did not stop there, but concerning Him too, who chose the contrary course, they said again this very same thing;
37:179
thus they were ever being carried about into self-contradictory opinions.
37:180
But Luke, along with these things, sets down yet another and greater accusation against them, saying:
37:181
'For the tax collectors justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.'
37:182
Then afterward He reproaches the cities, once wisdom had been justified, once He had shown all things to have been fulfilled.
37:183
For since He had not persuaded them, He then pronounces woe upon them, which is more forceful than to frighten.
37:184
For He had displayed both the teaching that comes by words, and the wonder-working that comes by signs.
37:185
But since they remained in their unbelief, He then reproaches them.
37:186
'For then,' it says, 'Jesus began to reproach the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent, saying:'
37:187
Then, that you may learn that they were not such by nature, He sets down also the name of the city from which five apostles came forth.
37:188
For both Philip and those two pairs of the chief apostles were from there.
37:189
'For if the mighty works which were done in you,' He says, 'had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.'
37:190
'But I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.'
37:191
'exalted to heaven, you shall be brought down to Hades;'
37:192
'for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.'
37:193
'But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.'
37:194
And He does not add Sodom to their case simply, but so as to heighten the accusation. For it is the greatest proof of wickedness, when men are shown to be worse not merely than those alive at the time, but even than all the wicked who ever lived.
37:195
祂在別處也照樣作了比較,藉尼尼微人並藉南方的女王來定他們的罪;
So too in another place He makes a comparison, condemning them by the men of Nineveh and by the queen of the south;
37:196
然而在那裡,乃是藉那些行了善事的人;
but there indeed by those who had done well;
37:197
while here it is even by those who had sinned, which was far more grievous.
37:198
這定罪的準則,以西結也曉得;
This law of condemnation Ezekiel also knew;
37:199
wherefore he also said to Jerusalem:
37:200
'Thou hast justified thy sisters in all thy sins.'
37:201
Thus everywhere He is wont to dwell fondly upon the Old Testament.
37:202
And not even here does He bring His discourse to a stand, but He also intensifies the fear, saying that they shall suffer things more grievous than the men of Sodom and of Tyre, so as to draw them on from every side, both by pronouncing them wretched and by making them afraid.
37:203
Let us therefore also give heed to these things.
37:204
For not to unbelievers only, but to us also, He appointed a chastisement more grievous than that of the men of Sodom, if we shall not receive the strangers who come in unto us — He who bade us even shake off the very dust.
37:205
因為那些人縱然犯了不法之罪,但那是在律法與恩典之前;
For those men, even if they sinned lawlessly, yet it was before the law and before grace;
37:206
but we, after so great care bestowed on us, of what pardon should we be worthy, showing such hatred of strangers, and shutting our doors against those in need, and, before our doors, our ears? Nay rather, not against the poor only, but against the very apostles. For it is on account of the apostles that He speaks also of the poor.
37:207
For when Paul is read, and thou givest no heed; when John preaches, and thou dost not hear — when wilt thou receive a poor man, thou who receivest not an apostle? In order therefore that both to these our houses, and to those our ears, may be continually open, let us cleanse away the filth from the ears of the soul.
37:208
因為正如污穢與泥濘塞住肉身的耳朵,照樣,淫穢的歌曲、屬世的故事、債務之事、以及論利息與借貸的話,也比一切污穢更嚴重地堵塞心思的聽覺;
For just as filth and mire block the ears of the flesh, so do lewd songs, and worldly tales, and matters of debts, and talk of interest and loans, obstruct the hearing of the mind more grievously than any filth;
37:209
nay rather, they not only obstruct it, but also make it unclean.
37:210
For indeed they cast dung into your ears, they that recount such things.
37:211
And that which the barbarian threatened, saying:
37:212
「你們必吃自己的糞」,以及接下去的話;
'Ye shall eat your own dung,' and what follows;
37:213
這事這些人使你們忍受,不是在言語上,而是藉著他們的實行;
this these men make you endure, not in word, but by their very deeds;
37:214
or rather, something far more grievous.
37:215
因為那些歌曲比這些東西更令人作嘔;
For those songs are yet more loathsome than these things;
37:216
and what is indeed more grievous, that not only do ye not think yourselves troubled in hearing them, but ye even laugh, when ye ought to abhor and to flee.
37:217
但若這些在你看來並不可憎,那就下到那舞台去,去效法你所稱讚的;
But if they are not abominable to thee, go down into the orchestra, emulate that which thou praisest;
37:218
nay rather, do but go along with him who stirs up that laughter.
37:219
那麼你為何給他這麼大的尊榮呢?就連希臘人所寫的律法也定這等人為卑賤無榮的;
Why then dost thou pay him so great honour? Even the laws written by the Greeks will have such men to be without honour;
37:220
but thou receivest them with the whole city, as ambassadors and generals, and summonest all, that they may receive dung into their ears.
37:221
若有一個家僕在你聽見時說出甚麼可恥的話,他必受無數的鞭打;
And if a household servant utter something shameful in thy hearing, he will receive countless stripes;
37:222
若是兒子、妻子,或無論何人作了同樣的事,你就稱這行為為侮辱;
and if a son, or a wife, or whosoever it be, do this same thing, thou callest the deed an outrage;
37:223
but if men who are gallows-rogues and worth three obols call thee to hear shameful words, not only art thou not indignant, but thou even rejoicest and praisest.
37:224
And what could be equal to this unreasonableness? But thou dost not thyself utter these shameful things? And what is the gain? Nay rather, whence is even this itself manifest? For if thou hadst not uttered them, neither wouldest thou have laughed on hearing, nor wouldest thou with such eagerness have run to the voice that puts thee to shame.
37:225
For tell me, dost thou rejoice to hear those that blaspheme? Nay, dost thou not shudder, and stop thine ears? For my part, I think so.
37:226
Why then? Because thou dost not thyself blaspheme.
37:227
所以,在污穢言語的事上,你也當照樣行;
Do thou therefore in like manner also in the case of foul language;
37:228
and if thou wouldest show us plainly that thou takest no pleasure in uttering shameful things, endure not even to hear them.
37:229
For when wilt thou be able to become earnest,
37:230
being nourished on such hearings? When wilt thou endure to bear the sweats endured for chastity, while thou art little by little slipping away through the laughter and the songs and these shameful words? For it is a matter of thankfulness if a soul, kept pure from all these things, can become grave and chaste — much less one nourished on such hearings.
37:231
Or know ye not that we are more prone toward evil? When therefore we make even this our art and our business, when shall we escape that furnace? Hast thou not heard what Paul says:
37:232
'Rejoice in the Lord'? He said not:
37:233
那麼,你幾時能聽得進保羅呢?你既常常不斷地因那戲樂而如醉,幾時能覺察自己的過犯呢?因為你來到這裡,並不足為奇,也不是甚麼大事;
When then wilt thou be able to hear Paul? When to gain perception of thy transgressions, being ever and continually drunk from that spectacle? For that thou hast come here is no marvel or great thing;
37:234
因為到這裡,你的確是漫不經心、只為敷衍了事地來的;
for here indeed thou comest carelessly and as a mere matter of form;
37:235
but there with eagerness and running and much readiness of mind.
37:236
And this is plain from what thou carriest home, on returning from thence.
37:237
因為凡在那裡藉言語、藉歌曲、藉笑聲傾倒在你們身上的一切污泥,你們各人都收集起來帶回自己的家;
For indeed all the mire that was poured out upon you there through the words, through the songs, through the laughter, each of you gathers up and carries into his house;
37:238
nay rather, not into the house only, but each into his own mind.
37:239
And the things that are not worthy of abhorrence thou turnest away from, but the abominable things thou dost not hate, but even lovest.
37:240
無論如何,許多人從墳墓回來就洗淨自己;
Many, at all events, on returning from tombs have washed themselves;
37:241
但從戲院退出來時,他們卻既不歎息,也不流出淚泉;
but on withdrawing from the theatres they neither groaned, nor poured forth fountains of tears;
37:242
然而死屍並不使人不潔;
and yet the dead body is not unclean;
37:243
but sin implants so great a stain, that not even by ten thousand fountains can it be washed away, but only by tears and confessions.
37:244
But there is no one who perceives this stain.
37:245
For since we fear not the things we ought, therefore we dread the things we ought not.
37:246
And what is the din? and what the tumult, and the satanic shoutings, and the devilish postures? For one, being young, wears his hair long behind, effeminating his nature, and by his look, and his posture, and his garments, and by all things simply, is eager to pass into the image of a tender maiden.
37:247
And another, an old man, contrary to this one, having shaved off his hair close with a razor, and girt about his sides, standing ready to be buffeted, having cut away his sense of shame sooner than his hair, prepared to say and to do everything.
37:248
And the women stand with bared heads, all shame cast off, discoursing before the populace, practising such a study of shamelessness, and pouring all wantonness and lasciviousness into the souls of the hearers.
37:249
And their one endeavour is to pluck up chastity by the very roots, to put nature to shame, to fulfil the desire of the evil demon.
37:250
For indeed there are shameful words there, and postures more shameful, and such a cutting of the hair, and a gait, and a dress, and a voice, and a wanton breaking of the limbs, and rollings of the eyes, and pipes, and flutes, and dramas, and plots, and everything simply full of the uttermost lasciviousness.
37:251
When then wilt thou be sober again, tell me, while the devil pours out on thee so much unmingled fornication, mingling so many cups of licentiousness for thee? For there are also adulteries there, and thefts of marriage, and women there playing the harlot, men who have consorted with harlots, youths made effeminate — all things full of transgression, all of monstrousness, all of shame.
37:252
It behoved not then those who sit by to laugh at these things, but to weep and to groan bitterly.
37:253
What then? Shall we shut up the orchestra, saith one, and shall all things be overthrown by thy word? Nay, it is now that all things have been overthrown.
37:254
For whence come those that lay snares against marriages? tell me;
37:255
is it not from this stage? Whence those that dig through bridal chambers? is it not from that orchestra? Is it not hence that husbands become burdensome to their wives? is it not hence that wives become despised by their husbands? is it not hence that the more part are adulterers? So that he who overthrows all things is the man that goes to the theatre, that brings in a grievous tyranny.
37:256
Nay, saith one, but this is thought to be a part of the good order of the laws.
37:257
For to tear women asunder, and to outrage young boys, and to overthrow houses, belongs to those who have seized the citadels.
37:258
And who, saith one, has become an adulterer from these spectacles? Who indeed
37:259
has not become an adulterer? And if it were possible to name them now by name, I should have shown how many men those harlots have severed from their wives, how many they took captive, raising some up from the very bed, and not permitting others so much as at the first to enter into marriage.
37:260
shall we overthrow all the laws? Nay, it is lawlessness that one may overthrow, in doing away with these theatres.
37:261
因為那些敗壞城邑的人,正是這一類人;
For those who ruin the cities are of this sort;
37:262
from thence at any rate come factions and disturbances.
37:263
For those who are maintained by dancers, and who sell their own voice to the belly, whose business it is to shout and to do everything absurd — these most of all are they that inflame the populace, that bring in disturbances upon the cities.
37:264
For youth, once seized by idleness and nurtured amid so many evils, becomes wilder than any beast.
37:265
For tell me, the sorcerers—whence come they? Is it not from this source? That they may excite a populace idly at leisure, and cause the dancers to reap the profit of much uproar, and set harlot women as a rampart against the chaste, they resort to such enchantments as not even to shrink from disturbing the bones of the departed.
37:266
Is it not from this source, when men are compelled to squander countless sums upon that wicked chorus of the devil? And whence comes licentiousness and the ten thousand evils? Do you see that you overturn life by dragging men to these things, while I build it up by tearing them down?
37:267
'Let us then pull down the orchestra,' one says.
37:268
Would that it were possible to pull it down!
37:269
Or rather, if you are willing, our part of it has already been pulled down and razed to the ground.
37:270
Yet I command none of these things.
37:271
Render inoperative the things that still stand—which is a greater praise than to pull them down.
37:272
你們若不肯效法別人,至少也當效法那些外邦人(蠻族);
If you will imitate no one else, at least emulate the barbarians;
37:273
for they too keep themselves pure from every such spectacle.
37:274
那麼,我們還有甚麼託辭呢?我們既是諸天的公民,是與基路伯一同跳舞的,是與眾天使有分的,卻在這事上竟比外邦人還要不如,而且這還是在我們本可以尋得無數比這更美的享受的時候?因為你若想要舒暢心靈,就到園中去,到流淌的河邊和池塘旁;
What defense, then, shall be left to us, when we—citizens of the heavens, fellow dancers with the Cherubim, companions of the angels—become in this respect worse even than the barbarians, and that when it is possible to find ten thousand other delights far better than these? For if you wish to refresh your soul, walk out into the gardens, to a flowing river and to pools;
37:275
study the gardens, listen to the cicadas singing, frequent the shrines of the martyrs, where there is health of body and profit of soul, and no harm at all, nor repentance after the pleasure, as there is in those other places.
37:276
你有妻子,你有兒女;
You have a wife, you have children;
37:277
what pleasure is equal to this? You have a home, you have friends—these are the delights that, together with self-control, yield great gain as well.
37:278
For what is sweeter than children, tell me? What sweeter than a wife, to the man who wishes to live chastely? The barbarians, indeed, are said once to have uttered a saying full of wisdom.
37:279
因為他們聽說這些違法的戲院和那不合時宜的享樂,就說:「羅馬人彷彿沒有兒女和妻子似的,竟為自己想出這樣的享樂來」;
For hearing about these lawless theaters and their unseasonable delight, they said: 'The Romans, as though they had no children and no wives, have devised for themselves such pleasures as these';
37:280
thereby showing that nothing is sweeter than children and a wife, if you are willing to live honorably.
37:281
'What then,' he says, 'if I show that men take no harm from spending time there?' Above all, this very thing is harmful—to waste one's time idly and to no purpose, and to become a stumbling block to others.
37:282
For even though you yourself take no harm, you make another more eager for this.
37:283
And how shall you yourself escape harm, providing occasions for the things that are done? For the sorcerer, and the prostituted boy, and the harlot woman, and all those diabolical choruses lay upon your head the responsibility for the things that are done.
37:284
因為正如若沒有觀看的人,就不會有從事這些勾當的人一樣;
For just as, if there were no spectators, there would be none who pursued these practices,
37:285
so, since there are spectators, they too share in the fire of the things that are done.
37:286
So that even if you took no harm at all as to your chastity—which is impossible—yet you will render a grievous account for the destruction of others, both of the spectators and of those who gather them together.
37:287
And you would have gained the more in chastity, had you not gone there.
37:288
For even if you are now chaste, you would have become more chaste by fleeing such spectacles.
37:289
Let us not, then, contend over superfluous things, nor devise useless defenses.
37:290
For there is but one defense: to flee the Babylonian furnace, to get far away from the Egyptian harlot, even though one must escape her hands naked.
37:291
For thus shall we also enjoy much pleasure, our conscience not accusing us, and
37:292
we shall live the present life with self-control, and shall attain the good things to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and dominion, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
