這一切話,耶穌都用比喻對眾人講;若不用比喻,就甚麼也不對他們講;
All these things Jesus spoke unto the multitudes in parables, and without a parable He spoke nothing unto them;
47:2
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:
47:3
'I will open My mouth in parables, I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.'
47:4
But Mark says that 'As they were able to hear it, He spoke the word unto them in parables.'
47:5
Then, showing that He was introducing nothing new, He brings in the prophet also as foretelling this manner of teaching.
47:6
And teaching us the mind of Christ—that it was not in order that they might remain ignorant, but that He might lead them to inquiry, that He thus discoursed—he added:
47:7
「若不用比喻,就甚麼也不對他們講」——其實祂也講了許多不用比喻的話;
'And without a parable He spoke nothing unto them'—although He said many things without a parable;
47:8
然而卻沒有一個人向祂發問;
and yet no one asked Him;
47:9
他們卻常常向先知發問,如向以西結,並向其他許多人那樣;
and yet they often questioned the prophets, as they did Ezekiel, and many others;
47:10
but these did nothing of the sort.
47:11
然而所說的話已足以使他們陷入不安,並激動他們去發問;
And yet what had been said was enough to cast them into anguish, and to rouse them to inquiry;
47:12
因為那些比喻確實警告了極其嚴厲的刑罰;
for indeed the parables threatened a most grievous punishment;
47:13
but nevertheless not even so were they moved.
47:14
Wherefore also, having left them, He departed.
47:15
因為經上說:「那時,耶穌撇下眾人,進了自己的屋子」;
'For then,' it says, 'having left the multitudes, Jesus went into His house';
47:16
文士中並沒有一個人跟從祂;
and none of the scribes follows Him;
47:17
whence it is plain that for no other reason did they follow, than to lay hold of Him.
47:18
But since they understood not the things spoken, He thereafter let them be.
47:19
祂的門徒來到祂跟前,問及那稗子的比喻;
And His disciples come to Him, asking concerning the parable of the tares;
47:20
and yet there are places where, though wishing to learn, they were afraid to ask.
47:21
Whence, then, came to them here this boldness? They had heard that 'To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven,' and they took courage.
47:22
Wherefore also they ask apart, not grudging the multitude, but keeping the Master's law.
47:23
'For to these,' He says, 'it is not given.'
47:24
他們究竟為何撇開麵酵和芥菜種的比喻,卻單就這一個發問呢?因為他們把那兩個比喻當作較為明白的,就略過不問了;
And why ever, leaving aside the parable of the leaven and of the mustard seed, do they inquire concerning this one? They passed over those as being clearer;
47:25
But this one, since it bears a kinship to the one already spoken of, and displays something more than that one, they desired to learn.
47:26
For otherwise He would not have spoken the same thing a second time to those who longed to learn.
47:27
For they saw much threatening made manifest out of it.
47:28
Therefore He does not rebuke them, but even fills up what had been said.
47:29
And what I have always said—that the parables ought not to be pressed word for word, since many absurdities will follow—
47:30
this very thing He Himself here teaches us, in the way He expounds the parable.
47:31
因為祂並沒有說那些前來的僕人是誰;
For He does not say who the servants are that came forward;
47:32
but showing that He had introduced them for the sake of a certain sequence, and to shape out the image, He leaves that part aside and interprets the pressing matters, those which are of chief importance and hold the whole together, and for the sake of which the parable was spoken—showing Himself to be judge and lord of all.
47:33
'And answering,' He says, 'He said to them:'
47:34
'He that sows the good seed is the Son of Man;'
47:35
'and the field is the world;'
47:36
'and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom;'
47:37
'but the tares are the sons of the evil one;'
47:38
'and the enemy that sowed them is the devil;'
47:39
'and the harvest is the consummation of the age;'
47:40
'and the reapers are angels.'
47:41
'As therefore the tares are gathered and burned with fire,'
47:42
'so shall it be in the consummation of this age.'
47:43
'The Son of Man shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and them that work iniquity, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire;'
47:44
'there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.'
47:45
'Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.'
47:46
For when He Himself is the sower, and it is His own field, and He gathers out of His own kingdom, it is quite clear that the present world also is His.
47:47
But consider His unspeakable love toward mankind, and how prone He is to beneficence, and how averse to punishment.
47:48
For when He sows, He sows by Himself; but when He punishes, He does it through others, that is, through the angels.
47:49
'Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.'
47:50
Not that they shall be only thus, but because we know no other star brighter than this luminary, He has used examples familiar to us.
47:51
And yet elsewhere He says that the harvest is already present, as when He speaks concerning the Samaritans:
47:52
'Lift up your eyes, and behold the fields, that they are white already unto harvest'; and again, 'The harvest indeed is plenteous, but the labourers are few.'
47:53
How then does He say there that the harvest is already present, while here He said the harvest is yet to come? According to a different sense of meaning.
47:54
And how is it that, having said elsewhere, 'One is he that sows, and another he that reaps,' here He says that He Himself is the sower? Because there too He was not contrasting Himself, but contrasting the apostles with the prophets, and that in the case of the Jews and the Samaritans.
47:55
For indeed it was He Himself who sowed also through the prophets.
47:56
And there is a place where He calls this very same thing both harvest and sowing, naming it thus with reference to one thing and to another.
47:57
因為當祂論到那些順從之人的信服與順服時,便把這事稱為收割,彷彿全事已經完成;
For when He speaks of the persuasion and obedience of those who have obeyed, He calls the matter a harvest, as though the whole were already accomplished;
47:58
但當祂尋求那聽道所結的果子時,便稱之為撒種;
but when He seeks the fruit of the hearing, He calls it sowing;
47:59
and He calls the consummation a harvest.
47:60
And how is it that elsewhere He says that the righteous are first caught up? For they are indeed first caught up; but when Christ has come, these others are delivered over to punishment, and then those go away into the kingdom of heaven.
47:61
For since they must be in heaven, and He Himself will come here and judge all men, having pronounced sentence upon these, He then—like a king rising up together with his friends—leads them away to that blessed portion.
47:62
Do you see that the punishment is twofold—both in the being burned, and in the falling from that glory? But for what reason, after those have departed, does He still speak to them also in parables? They had become wiser from what had been said, so as even to understand.
47:63
Indeed, at any rate, He says to them after these things, 'Have you understood all these things?' They say to Him:
47:64
Thus, along with the other things, the parable accomplished this also—to make them more discerning.
47:65
What then does He say again? 'The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field, which a man having found, hid, and from his joy sells all that he has,'
47:66
'and buys that field.'
47:67
'Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant seeking goodly pearls;'
47:68
'who, having found one pearl of great price, went away and sold all that he had, and bought it.'
47:69
Just as there the grain of mustard seed and the leaven have some small difference from one another,
47:70
so also here these two parables, that of the treasure and that of the pearl.
47:71
For by both of these He hints at this: that one ought to prefer the preaching above all things.
47:72
那個關於麵酵和芥菜種的比喻,乃是就福音傳揚的能力而說的,並指明它必要完全勝過普天下;
And that one, the parable of the leaven and of the mustard, was spoken with reference to the power of the preaching, and that it will altogether prevail over the whole inhabited world;
47:73
but these show its preciousness and costliness.
47:74
For it spreads out like mustard, and prevails like leaven, and is costly like a pearl, and provides boundless abundance like a treasure.
47:75
所以我們所要學的,不僅是這一點——就是我們必須撇下一切別的事,緊緊持守福音的傳揚;
It is not only this, then, that we may learn—that we must strip off all other things and cleave to the preaching;
47:76
而且還當帶著喜樂去行這事;
but also that we must do this with joy;
47:77
and that the one who parts with his possessions must know that the matter is a gain, and not a loss.
47:78
你看見福音的傳揚怎樣連在世界裡也是隱藏的,而諸般美善又隱藏在福音裡麼?你若不變賣一切,就不能買著;
Do you see how the preaching is hidden even in the world, and the good things hidden in the preaching? Unless you sell all, you do not buy;
47:79
and unless you have such a soul—careful and seeking—you do not find.
47:80
Δύο .
Two things therefore must be present: both to abstain from the things of this life, and to be watchful.
47:81
For 'to one seeking,' He says, 'goodly pearls;'
47:82
'who, having found one of great price, sold all, and bought it.'
47:83
For the truth is one, and not manifold.
47:84
And just as he who has the pearl himself knows that he is rich, but is often not recognized by the rest, even while holding it in his hand—
47:85
for it is not a bulk of body—
47:86
so indeed it is also in the case of the preaching: those who hold it know that they are rich, but the unbelievers, not knowing this treasure, are also ignorant of our wealth.
47:87
Then, lest we should be confident in the preaching alone, nor suppose that faith by itself suffices for our salvation, He speaks yet another fearful parable.
47:88
Which one, then, is this? That of the dragnet.
47:89
'For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind;'
47:90
'which, when it was filled, they drew up onto the shore, and sitting down, gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.'
47:91
這比喻與稗子的比喻有何不同呢?因為在那裡也是有些人得救、有些人滅亡;
And in what does this differ from the parable of the tares? For there also some are saved and some perish;
47:92
但在那裡,乃是因著藉惡毒的教義而生的異端;
but there it is for the sake of choosing heresy through wicked doctrines;
47:93
而在此之前所說的那些人,則是因著不留心所講的道;
and those before this, on account of not giving heed to the things spoken;
47:94
but these, on account of the wickedness of their life.
47:95
These are the most wretched of all, in that they attained to knowledge and were caught in the net, yet even so could not be saved.
47:96
And yet elsewhere He says that it is the Shepherd Himself who separates them, while here He says that the angels do this—as also in the case of the tares.
47:97
What then is the meaning? At one time He discourses to them more plainly, at another more loftily.
47:98
And this parable He interprets without even being asked; rather, of His own accord He made it known in part, and thereby heightened their fear.
47:99
免得你聽見他們把壞的丟在外面,就以為那滅亡並無可懼;祂便藉著這解釋顯明了那刑罰,說:「他們要把他們丟在爐中」;
For lest, on hearing that they cast the rotten ones out, you should think the destruction free of peril, through the interpretation He showed forth the punishment, saying that 'They will cast them into a furnace';
47:100
and He disclosed the gnashing of teeth and the anguish that is unspeakable.
47:101
Do you see how many are the roads to destruction? That by the rock, that by the thorns, that by the wayside, that by the tares, that by the dragnet.
47:102
Not without reason, then, did He say that 'Broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many there are who go in by it.'
47:103
Having said these things, therefore, and having brought His discourse to a close upon that which is fearful, and having shown these things more fully (for He dwelt upon them the more), He says:
47:104
'Have you understood all these things?' They say to Him:
47:105
Then, since they had understood, again He commends them, saying:
47:106
'Therefore every scribe who has been made a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.'
47:107
'I will send you wise men and scribes.'
47:108
Do you see how He does not shut out the Old Testament, but even praises and proclaims it, calling it a treasure? So that all who are unversed in the divine Scriptures cannot be householders—those who neither possess anything themselves, nor receive from others, but
47:109
look on while they themselves are consumed by famine.
47:110
And not these only, but the heretics too are outside this blessing.
47:111
For they do not bring out things new and old.
47:112
因為他們既沒有舊的,所以也沒有新的;
For neither do they have the old things, and therefore not the new either;
47:113
正如那沒有新的人,也就沒有舊的,反倒兩樣都缺乏;
just as, then, those who have not the new have not the old either, but are bereft of both;
47:114
for these are bound together with one another and interwoven.
47:115
Let us therefore hearken, all we who neglect the reading of the Scriptures, to how great a harm we suffer, how great a poverty.
47:116
我們這些連自己當按以生活的律法都不知道的人,幾時能實踐那藉行為表現出來的生活呢?然而那些富足的人、那些為錢財瘋狂的人,卻不斷抖動他們的衣裳,免得被蟲蛀壞;
For when shall we lay hold of a manner of life shown forth in works, we who do not so much as know the laws by which we ought to live? But those who are rich, who are frantic over money, continually shake out their garments, that they may not become moth-eaten;
47:117
but you, though you see forgetfulness, more grievous than a moth, ravaging your soul, do not open books, do not beat off the ruin, do not adorn your soul, do not continually contemplate the image of virtue, and learn thoroughly its members and its head? For indeed it has a head too, and members more comely than those of any well-formed and beautiful body.
47:118
What then, one asks, is the head of virtue? Humility.
47:119
Wherefore also from this Christ begins, saying:
47:120
This head has no tresses and curling locks, but such a beauty as to draw God to itself.
47:121
'For upon whom shall I look,' He says, 'but upon the meek and lowly, and him that trembles at My words?' And, 'My eyes are upon the meek of the earth.'
47:122
And, 'The Lord is near to those who are broken in heart.'
47:123
This head, in place of hair and tresses, bears sacrifices well-pleasing to God.
47:124
它是金壇,是屬靈的祭壇;
It is a golden altar, and a spiritual altar of sacrifice;
47:125
for 'A broken spirit is a sacrifice to God.'
47:126
This is the mother of wisdom.
47:127
If one has this, he will have the rest as well.
47:128
Have you seen a head such as you have never seen? Do you wish to see also the face—or rather, to learn of it? Then learn first its colour, ruddy and blooming and full of grace, and learn whence it is composed.
47:129
Whence, then, is it composed? From feeling shame and blushing.
47:130
'Before the modest man grace goes forth.'
47:131
This pours much beauty over the other members also.
47:132
Though you mingle ten thousand pigments, you will not produce such loveliness.
47:133
And if you wish to see the eyes also, behold them delineated with exactness by orderliness and self-control.
47:134
Wherefore also they become so beautiful and keen-sighted as to behold the Lord Himself.
47:135
'For blessed,' He says, 'are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.'
47:136
Its mouth is wisdom and understanding, and the knowledge of spiritual hymns.
47:137
Its heart is experience in the Scriptures, and the careful keeping of exact doctrines, and love of mankind, and kindness.
47:138
And just as without this it is not possible to live, so without that other it is never possible to be saved.
47:139
For from thence are born all good things.
47:140
它也有腳和手,就是善行的彰顯;
It has feet also and hands, namely the demonstrations of good works;
47:141
它也有魂,就是敬虔;
it has a soul also, namely godliness;
47:142
它也有胸膛,是金的、比金剛石更堅固的,就是勇氣;
it has also a breast, golden and firmer than adamant, namely courage;
47:143
and everything else is easier to capture than for this breast to be burst asunder.
47:144
And the spirit that is in the brain and in the heart is love.
47:145
你願意我從實際的行為中把這形像指給你看嗎?請你為我想想這位福音書作者本身;
Do you wish that I show you this image in the very works themselves? Consider for me this same evangelist;
47:146
and although we do not have his whole life recorded, nevertheless even from a few things it is possible to see his image shining forth.
47:147
至於他是謙卑痛悔的,你且聽他在寫成福音書之後,怎樣稱自己為稅吏;
That he was humble and contrite, hear how, after writing the Gospel, he calls himself a tax collector;
47:148
至於他也是有憐憫的,你看他怎樣捨棄了一切,跟從了耶穌;
and that he was also merciful, see how he stripped himself of all and followed Jesus;
47:149
and that he was godly is manifest from the doctrines.
47:150
他的聰明從他所寫的福音書中也容易看出,他的愛也是如此;
And his understanding it is easy to see from the Gospel which he composed, and his love as well;
47:151
因為他顧念普世;
for he cared for the whole inhabited world;
47:152
他善行的彰顯,可從他將要坐上的寶座看出;
and the demonstration of his good works is seen from the throne upon which he is to sit;
47:153
and his courage from the fact that he departed rejoicing from the presence of the council.
47:154
Let us therefore be zealous for this virtue, and most of all for humility and mercy, without which it is not possible to be saved.
47:155
And the five virgins make this plain, and along with them the Pharisee.
47:156
因為沒有童貞仍可能得見那國;
For without virginity it is possible to see the kingdom;
47:157
但沒有憐憫卻是絕不可能的;
but without mercy it is impossible;
47:158
for this is among the necessary things, and
47:159
Not without reason, therefore, have we called it the heart of virtue.
47:160
But this heart, unless it supply spirit to all, is quickly quenched.
47:161
正如泉源,若把水流圈禁在自己裡面,就會腐臭;
Just as a spring, then, if it keep its waters shut up within itself, grows putrid;
47:162
so too the rich, when they keep their possessions to themselves.
47:163
因此我們在日常俗語中也說:「某人手中的財富大大腐爛了」;
For this reason too we say in common speech, 'Great is the rottenness of wealth in such a man's keeping';
47:164
and we do not say, 'Great is the abundance, great the treasure.'
47:165
For there is a rotting away not of the possessors only, but of the very wealth itself.
47:166
衣裳擱置久了便會朽爛,金子生鏽,五穀被蛀蝕;
For garments as they lie stored up decay, and gold gathers rust, and grain is eaten away;
47:167
and the soul of him who possesses these things is, more than all of them, both corroded and rotted with cares.
47:168
And if you were willing to bring the soul of a lover of money out into the midst, you would find it, like a garment gnawed by ten thousand worms and having nothing sound in it, so pierced through on every side by cares, rotted and corroded by its sins.
47:169
然而甘心樂意作窮人之人的靈魂卻非如此;
But such is not the soul of the poor man—of the poor man who is so by his own will;
47:170
rather it gleams like gold, it shines like a pearl, and it blooms like a rose.
47:171
因為那裡沒有蛀蟲,那裡沒有賊,那裡沒有今生的憂慮;
For there is no moth there, there is no thief there, there is no care of this present life;
47:172
but they live their lives as the angels do.
47:173
你願意觀看這靈魂之美嗎?你願意徹底認識貧窮的豐富嗎?它不是向人發號施令,而是命令群鬼;
Do you wish to behold the beauty of this soul? Do you wish to learn thoroughly the riches of poverty? It gives commands not to men, but it commands demons;
47:174
它不是侍立在君王面前,而是侍立在神面前;
it does not stand before an earthly king, but it stands before God;
47:175
它不是在人中間當兵,而是在天使中間當兵;
it does not serve as a soldier among men, but it serves as a soldier among angels;
47:176
it does not have two and three and twenty coffers, but such abundance that it reckons the whole world to be nothing.
47:177
它所有的不是庫房,而是天堂;
It has not a treasure-house, but heaven itself;
47:178
it has no need of slaves; rather it has the passions for its slaves, it has for its slaves the reasonings that rule over kings.
47:179
For the very reasoning that lays its command upon him who is clothed in the purple—this reasoning it has cowering before it, and it dares not look it in the face.
47:180
And at kingdom and gold and all such things it laughs as at children's playthings, and just as at hoops and knucklebones and toy-heads and balls, so it deems all these things contemptible.
47:181
For it possesses an adornment which those who play with these things are not even able to see.
47:182
What then could be better than this poor man? At any rate, he has heaven for his floor.
47:183
And if his floor is such, consider what the roof must be.
47:184
But has he no horses and chariots? Why, what need has he of these, who is about to ride upon the clouds and to be with Christ? Bearing these things in mind, then, both men and women, let us seek after that wealth and that abundance which cannot be plundered, that we too may attain the kingdom of heaven, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might unto the ages of ages.
