And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, He departed from Galilee, and came into the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan.
63:2
祂因他們的嫉妒而屢屢離開猶太,如今卻終於常來此地,因為受難的時候快要臨近了;
Having continually left Judea because of their envy, He now at last frequents it, since the Passion was soon to be near;
63:3
yet He does not for the present go up to Jerusalem, but only to the borders of Judea.
63:4
And when He had come, great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them.
63:5
祂既不一味停留在言語的教導上,也不一味停留在神蹟的行奇事上;
He neither continually dwells upon the teaching of words, nor upon the working of wonders by signs;
63:6
but now He does this, now that, diversifying the salvation of those who wait upon Him and follow Him, so that from the signs He might be shown to be a teacher worthy of belief in what He said, and from the teaching of His words He might heighten the profit gained from the signs.
63:7
And this was to lead them by the hand to the knowledge of God.
63:8
But consider for me this also, how whole populations
63:9
the disciples pass over with a single word, not reporting each of those healed by name.
63:10
因為他們並沒有說:「某某人和某某人」;
For they did not say, 'This one and that one';
63:11
but rather 'many,' thereby teaching us to be free from boastfulness.
63:12
And Christ healed, both doing good to those persons, and through them to many others.
63:13
For the mending of these people's infirmity became for others an occasion of the knowledge of God.
63:14
但法利賽人卻不然;反倒正因這事,他們更被激得如野獸般兇暴;
But not so with the Pharisees; nay, for this very reason they are the more made savage;
63:15
and they come to Him tempting Him.
63:16
For since they could find no hold upon the things that were being done, they put problems before Him.
63:17
For coming to Him and tempting Him, they said,
63:18
'Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?' Oh, the folly!
63:19
They thought to stop His mouth by their questions, though they had already received proof of this His power.
63:20
At any rate, when they disputed much about the Sabbath, when they said, 'He blasphemes,' when they said, 'He has a demon,' when they rebuked the disciples for walking through the cornfields, when they disputed about unwashed hands—everywhere He sewed up their mouths and stopped their shameless tongue, and thus dismissed them.
63:21
But nevertheless, not even so do they desist.
63:22
因為邪惡就是這樣,嫉妒就是這樣,既無恥又放肆;
For such is wickedness, such is envy—shameless and reckless;
63:23
though it be silenced ten thousand times, ten thousand times it sets upon Him again.
63:24
But consider for me also the malice in their manner of questioning.
63:25
'You commanded that a wife should not be put away;'
63:26
因為祂先前已經論到了這條律法;
For He had already discoursed concerning this law;
63:27
他們卻仍然不記得那些話,反倒從那裡出發,以為這樣能設下更大的圈套,想要逼使祂陷入與律法自相矛盾的困境,於是他們不問「你為何頒定這樣那樣的律例呢?」卻彷彿祂從未說過任何話一般,發問說:「這是否可以呢?」──指望祂已忘記自己所曾說過的話;
yet nevertheless they did not remember those sayings, but though they set out from that very point, thinking to make the snare the greater, and wishing to cast Him into the necessity of contradicting the law, they do not say, 'Why didst Thou enact this and that?' but, as though nothing had been said, they ask, 'Is it lawful?'—expecting that He had forgotten what He had spoken;
63:28
and being ready, if on the one hand He should say that it is lawful to put her away, to set against Him the things that had been said by Himself, and to say:
63:29
'How then hast Thou said the contrary?' but if, on the other hand, He should say the same things which He had said before, then to set against Him the words of Moses.
63:30
那麼祂自己怎麼做呢?祂並沒有說:「假冒為善的人哪,你們為甚麼試探我呢?」──雖然祂在此之後確實這樣說了;
What then does He Himself do? He did not say, 'Why tempt ye Me, ye hypocrites?'—and yet afterward He does say it;
63:31
but here He does not say this.
63:32
Why ever so? That together with His power He might also display His gentleness.
63:33
因為祂並非總是緘默,免得他們以為能瞞過祂;
For neither is He always silent, lest they should suppose that they escape His notice;
63:34
nor does He always reprove, that He may train us to bear all things with gentleness.
63:35
How then does He answer them? 'Have ye not read, that He who made them from the beginning made them male and female?' and said:
63:36
'For this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh.'
63:37
'So that they are no more two, but one flesh.'
63:38
'What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.'
63:39
因為當祂被問到「這是否可以」時,祂並沒有立刻說「這是不可以的」,免得他們騷動不安、心裡煩亂;
For being asked, 'Is it lawful?' He did not at once say, 'It is not lawful,' lest they should be thrown into an uproar and troubled;
63:40
but before pronouncing His verdict, by the argument itself He made this plain, showing that this was the ordinance of His Father also, and that not in opposition to Moses did He enjoin these things, but even in full agreement with him.
63:41
And observe how He grounds His argument not on the creation alone, but also on God's own command.
63:42
因為祂並不只是說祂造了一個男人和一個女人;
For He did not say merely that He made one man and one woman only;
63:43
but that He also gave this command, that the one should be joined to the one.
63:44
But if He had willed that a man should put away this one and bring in another, having made one man, He would have formed many women.
63:45
But as it is, both by the manner of the creation and by the manner of the legislation He showed that one man must dwell continually with one woman, and never break the bond.
63:46
「那起初造人的,是造男造女」;
'He who made them from the beginning made them male and female';
63:47
這就是說,他們是從一個根源而出的;
that is to say, they came into being from one root;
63:48
並且他們又合而為一個身體;
and they came together into one body;
63:49
'For the two shall be one flesh.'
63:50
接著,為要使人以指控這律法為可畏之事,並鞏固這律法,祂沒有說:「所以你們不可撕裂,也不可分離」;
Then, making it a fearful thing to accuse this legislation, and fixing the law firmly, He did not say, 'Rend not asunder therefore, neither separate';
63:51
but rather, 'What God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.'
63:52
But if thou bring forward Moses, I tell thee of Moses' Lord, and along with Him I ground my case on the very antiquity of the time as well.
63:53
因為神從起初造他們,是造男造女;
For God from the beginning made them male and female;
63:54
and this law is the more ancient, even if it seems now to be introduced by Me,
63:55
and to be laid down with much earnestness.
63:56
For neither did He simply bring the woman to the man, but also commanded that a man should forsake mother and father.
63:57
And He did not merely legislate that a man should come to his wife, but that he should cleave to her, by the very manner of the expression indicating the indissolubleness of the union.
63:58
祂並且不以此為足,反倒尋求更進一步、更大的聯合;
And not even with this was He content, but He sought after yet another and greater union;
63:59
'For the two,' He says, 'shall be one flesh.'
63:60
Then, when He had recited the ancient law, which had been brought in both by deeds and by words, and had shown it to be worthy of credit from Him who gave it, thereafter He interprets and legislates with authority, saying:
63:61
'So that they are no more two, but one flesh.'
63:62
As therefore to cut flesh is an accursed thing, so also to sever a wife is a transgression of the law.
63:63
And He did not stop even at this, but brought God in as well, saying:
63:64
「所以神所配合的,人不可分開」;
'What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder';
63:65
showing that what is done is both contrary to nature and contrary to the law.
63:66
這是違反本性的,因為原本一體的肉身被割裂了;
It is against nature, because one single flesh is cut asunder;
63:67
and it is against the law, because, when God has joined them together and commanded that they be not divided, you of yourselves conspire to do this.
63:68
What then was fitting after these things? Was it not to hold their peace, and to praise what was spoken? Was it not to marvel at His wisdom? Was it not to be amazed at His harmony with the Father? But they do none of these things; rather, as though contending against Him, they say:
63:69
'How then did Moses command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?' And yet it was not for them now to bring this forward, but rather for Him to put it to them.
63:70
但祂並不因此逼迫他們,也不對他們說:「從此以後我對這事就不再擔負責任」;
But nevertheless He presses not upon them, nor does He say this to them, that 'For this I am henceforth no longer responsible';
63:71
的確,倘若祂與那舊約毫不相干,祂就不會為摩西辯護了;
And indeed, if He had been a stranger to the old covenant, He would not have contended on behalf of Moses;
63:72
祂也不會憑著起初一次所成就的事來立論;
He would not have grounded His argument upon the things that were once done in the beginning;
63:73
He would not have been earnest to show that His own words were in agreement with those of old.
63:74
然而摩西也曾吩咐許多別的事,既有關於食物的,也有關於安息日的;
And yet Moses had enjoined many other things also, both those concerning meats and those concerning the sabbath;
63:75
wherefore then do they nowhere bring him forward, as they do here? Because they wished to set the multitude of the men in array against Him.
63:76
For indeed this was a matter of indifference to the Jews, and all men used to do it.
63:77
For this very reason, though so many things had been spoken on the mountain, they made mention now of this commandment alone.
63:78
But nevertheless the ineffable Wisdom makes His defence even concerning these things, and says:
63:79
'Moses, because of your hardness of heart, made this his law.'
63:80
祂也不容摩西繼續受人指責,因為那律法原是祂親自賜給摩西的;
And neither does He suffer even Moses to remain under accusation, since it was He Himself who had given him the law;
63:81
but He rescues him from the charge, and turns the whole of it upon their own head.
63:82
的確,當他們責備門徒掐麥穗時,祂顯明有罪的正是他們自己;
For indeed, when they blamed the disciples for plucking the ears of corn, He showed that it was they who were guilty;
63:83
當他們就不洗手的事控告門徒犯了規時,祂顯明那犯規的正是他們自己;
and when they charged transgression concerning not washing the hands, He showed that it was they who were the transgressors;
63:84
and in the matter of the sabbath too, and everywhere, and here likewise.
63:85
Then, since what had been said was burdensome and brought upon them much reproach, He quickly leads His discourse back again to the ancient law, saying that which He had said before also:
63:86
「但起初並不是這樣」;
'But from the beginning it was not so';
63:87
that is to say, that by the very facts of things God from the beginning laid down for us the contrary law.
63:88
For lest they should say, 'Whence is it plain that Moses said this because of our hardness?' He again stops their mouths from that source.
63:89
因為倘若這才是首要而有益的律法,那另一條就不會在起初被賜下了;
For if this had been the primary and profitable law, that other one would not have been given at the beginning;
63:90
God would not, in fashioning man, have fashioned him thus.
63:91
'But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery.'
63:92
For since He had stopped their mouths, He henceforth legislates with authority, just as in the matter of meats, just as in the matter of the sabbath.
63:93
的確,在食物的事上,祂既先使他們潰退,便對眾人講論說:「入口的並不能污穢人」;
For indeed in the matter of meats also, having first turned them to flight, He then discoursed to the multitudes, that 'Not that which entereth in defileth the man';
63:94
and in the matter of the sabbath, having stopped their mouths, He says:
63:95
「所以在安息日行善是可以的」;
'So then it is lawful to do well on the sabbath day';
63:96
and here this very same thing.
63:97
But what came to pass there, this same thing came to pass here also.
63:98
For just as there, when the Jews had been put to silence, the disciples were troubled, and coming to Him with Peter said:
63:99
「請將這比喻講給我們聽」;
'Declare unto us this parable';
63:100
so also now, being troubled, they said:
63:101
'If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.'
63:102
For indeed now they understood what was said better than before.
63:103
Therefore at that time they were silent, but now, since there had been objection and answer, question and inquiry, and the law had appeared more clearly, they question Him.
63:104
他們固然不敢公然反駁祂;
And openly indeed they dare not gainsay Him;
63:105
but that which seemed to arise from His words as grievous and burdensome, they bring forward into the midst, saying:
63:106
If the case of the man with the woman is such, it is not expedient to marry.
63:107
For it seemed exceedingly grievous to have a wife brimming with every kind of wickedness, and to endure a savage beast shut up within one's house without respite.
63:108
And that you may learn how greatly this disturbed them, Mark makes it plain, saying that they spoke to Him privately.
63:109
那麼「若男人與妻子的情形是這樣」是甚麼意思呢?就是說:若他們結合的緣故,乃是為叫他們成為一體;
But what does it mean, 'If the case of the man with the woman is such'? That is: if it is for this reason that they were joined together, that they might be one;
63:110
or else this: if the man will incur blame in these matters, and in every way transgresses by putting her away, it is lighter to contend against the desire of nature and against oneself than against an evil wife.
63:111
What then does Christ say? He did not say, 'Yes, it is lighter; do this,'
63:112
免得他們以為這事是一條律法;
lest they should suppose that the thing was a law;
63:113
'Not all can receive it, but only those to whom it has been given.'
63:114
thereby exalting the matter, and showing it to be great, and by this very means drawing them on and urging them forward.
63:115
But observe here an apparent contradiction.
63:116
因為祂自己說這是一件大事;
For He Himself says that this is a great thing;
63:117
For indeed both things needed to come to pass: both that it be acknowledged by Him to be great, so that He might make them more eager, and that from what had been said among them it be shown to be lighter, so that by this also they might rather choose virginity and continence.
63:118
For since to speak concerning virginity seemed grievous, out of the necessity of this law He cast them into that very desire.
63:119
Then, showing that it is possible, He says:
63:120
「有從母腹裡就生來如此的閹人;
'There are eunuchs who were so born from their mother's womb;
63:121
也有被人閹割的閹人;
and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men;
63:122
and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.'
63:123
祂藉這些話不知不覺地引領他們揀選這事,並確立這德行的可能性,幾乎就是說:你想一想——倘若你生來就是如此,或是在那些施行這等傷害之人手下受了這同樣的事,你會怎麼樣呢?你既被剝奪了享受,卻又毫無賞賜。所以你如今當感謝神,因為你所忍受的,那些人是不帶冠冕地忍受,你卻是帶著賞賜與冠冕來忍受;
By these words leading them imperceptibly to the choice of the thing, and establishing the possibility of this virtue, and all but saying: Consider — if you were such by nature, or had endured this very thing at the hands of those who inflict such injuries, what would you have done, being deprived of the enjoyment yet having no reward? Therefore give thanks to God now, that with reward and crowns you endure this which those others endure without crowns;
63:124
or rather not even this, but far lighter still, being sustained by hope, and by the consciousness of the good deed accomplished, and not even having desire surging so violently.
63:125
For it is not so much the excision of a member as the bridle of reason that knows how to calm such billows and to make a calm.
63:126
所以祂舉出那些人來,是為要膏抹這些人上陣爭戰;因為祂若不是要確立這一點,那麼祂論到其他閹人的話對祂又有何用呢?並且當祂說「他們自己閹割自己」時,並非指肢體的割除;
For this reason, then, He brought those others forward, that He might anoint these for the contest; since, if He were not establishing this, what does His discourse about the other eunuchs mean to Him? And when He says, 'They made themselves eunuchs,' He does not mean the cutting off of the members;
63:127
but the doing away of wicked thoughts.
63:128
Since he that cuts off the member is even liable to a curse, as Paul says:
63:129
'I would that they were even cut off who trouble you.'
63:130
For such a one dares the deeds of murderers, and gives occasion to those who slander God's handiwork, and opens the mouths of the Manichaeans, and transgresses in the same way as those among the Greeks who mutilate themselves.
63:131
因為割除肢體,從起初就是鬼魔運行、撒但詭計的作為;
For to cut off the members has been from the beginning a work of demonic energy and of Satanic contrivance;
63:132
ἵνα τοῦ .
為要毀謗神的工作;
that they might slander the work of God;
63:133
為要損毀這活物;
that they might mar this living creature;
63:134
為要叫他們不將這一切歸於意志,卻歸於肢體的本性,好使他們中間許多人如此無所懼怕地犯罪,以為自己無須負責;
that, ascribing the whole not to the will but to the nature of the members, many of them might thus sin without fear, as being not accountable;
63:135
and that they might doubly injure this living creature, both by maiming the members and by hindering the will's eagerness for good things.
63:136
These things the devil laid down as law, introducing, besides what has been said, yet another wicked doctrine, and by this preparing the way beforehand for the teaching concerning fate and necessity, and everywhere marring the freedom given us by God, and persuading
63:137
that evils are natural, and from this source sowing beneath the surface many other wicked doctrines, even if not openly.
63:138
For such are the poisons of the devil.
63:139
Therefore I exhort you to flee such lawlessness.
63:140
For along with what has been said, the things of desire do not become tamer by this means, but even harder to bear.
63:141
For the seed that is in us has its springs from one place, and surges from another.
63:142
有人說那狂熱是從腦中發出的,有人說是從腰間發出的;
And some say that that frenzy springs from the brain, others from the loins;
63:143
but I would say it comes from nowhere else than from an unbridled disposition and a neglected mind; for if the mind itself be sober, there is no harm at all from the natural motions.
63:144
Having therefore spoken of the eunuchs — both those who are eunuchs to no purpose and in vain, unless they too be sober in mind, and those who keep their virginity for the sake of the heavens — He again adds, saying:
63:145
'He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.'
63:146
He makes them more eager by showing how surpassingly great the achievement is, and yet, out of His unspeakable gentleness, He does not allow the matter to be shut up under the compulsion of a law.
63:147
And He said this once He had abundantly shown it to be possible, so that the honour accruing to the will's free choice might be the greater.
63:148
"And if it is a matter of free choice," one may ask, "how is it that at the outset He said, 'Not all can receive it, but those to whom it is given'?" It was that you might learn how great the contest is, not that you should suspect some enforced allotment.
63:149
For it is given to those, namely, to them that are willing.
63:150
He spoke thus to show that he who has entered upon this arena has need of much help from above, which the one who is willing will assuredly enjoy.
63:151
For it was His custom to use this manner of speaking whenever the thing to be accomplished was great, as when He says:
63:152
"To you it is given to know the mysteries."
63:153
And that this is true is clear also from the present passage.
63:154
For if it belonged to the gift from above alone, and those who keep virginity contributed nothing themselves, it would have been superfluous for Him to promise them the kingdom of heaven and to distinguish them from the other eunuchs.
63:155
But consider with me how, from the very things by which some do evil, others gain profit.
63:156
因為那些猶太人一無所學就走了;
For the Jews went away having learned nothing;
63:157
因為他們發問原不是為要學習;
for it was not even in order to learn that they asked;
63:158
but the disciples gained profit even from this.
63:159
"Then were there brought unto Him little children, that He should lay His hands on them and pray;
63:160
and the disciples rebuked them."
63:161
"Suffer the little children to come unto Me;
63:162
for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
63:163
"And He laid His hands on them, and departed thence."
63:164
And for what reason did the disciples drive the children away? For the sake of dignity.
63:165
那麼祂又怎樣行呢?祂教導他們要謙和自抑、要踐踏屬世的驕矜,就把小孩子抱起來摟在懷裡,並且把天國應許給這樣的人;
What then did He do? Teaching them to be moderate and to trample down worldly pride, He both takes the children and embraces them, and to such as these He promises the kingdom;
63:166
which very thing He had said before as well.
63:167
We too, therefore, if we wish to become heirs of the heavens, let us acquire this virtue with much diligence.
63:168
因為這正是真智慧的標記:既有明達,又不虛偽做作;
For this is the mark of true wisdom: to be unfeigned together with understanding;
63:169
for indeed the soul of the little child is pure from all the passions.
63:170
It bears no grudge against those who have grieved it, but goes to them as to friends, as though nothing had happened.
63:171
And however much it may be beaten by its mother, it seeks after her and prefers her before all things.
63:172
And though you should show it a queen with her diadem, it will not prefer her to its mother clothed in rags, but would rather see her in these than the queen in her adornment.
63:173
For it knows how to distinguish what is its own and what is another's not by poverty and wealth, but by love.
63:174
And it seeks nothing beyond what is necessary, but as soon as it is filled from the breast it lets go of the nipple.
63:175
The little child is not grieved over the things at which we are grieved,
63:176
例如錢財的損失,以及諸如此類的事;
such as the loss of money and the like;
63:177
牠又不為我們所歡喜的事歡喜,就是這些朽壞的事物;
and again it does not rejoice in the things in which we rejoice, in these perishable things;
63:178
it is not smitten with desire at the beauty of bodies.
63:179
「因為在天國的,正是這樣的人」;
"For of such is the kingdom of heaven";
63:180
that is, so that by free choice we may work out those things which children possess by nature.
63:181
For since the Pharisees did what they did from no other source than malice and madness, on this account He again and again bids the disciples be simple, hinting at those men and at the same time instructing these.
63:182
For indeed nothing so lifts a man up to arrogance as authority and the chief seat.
63:183
Since, then, the disciples were about to enjoy great honour throughout the whole inhabited world,
63:184
He forestalls their mind beforehand, not allowing them to suffer anything merely human, nor to demand honours from the multitude, nor to strut proudly before them.
63:185
For even though these things seem to be trifling, yet they are the cause of great evils.
63:186
Thus it was that the Pharisees, being trained up in this school, fell into the very summit of their vices, greedily seeking after salutations, the chief seats, and the places of honor at feasts.
63:187
For from these things they ran aground upon a madness for glory, and then from thence upon impiety.
63:188
正因如此,那些人藉著試探祂而給自己招來咒詛,便離去了;
For this very reason those men, having drawn a curse upon themselves through their tempting of Him, went their way;
63:189
but the little children received a blessing, inasmuch as they were set free from all these things.
63:190
Let us then also become like the little children, and let us be as infants with respect to wickedness.
63:191
因為除此之外,實在沒有、實在沒有別的方法能得見天國;
For it is not possible, it is not possible, to behold heaven in any other way;
63:192
but the man who is festering and evil must of all necessity fall utterly into hell.
63:193
And even before hell, here in this present life we shall suffer the uttermost.
63:194
For if you become evil, Scripture says, you alone will drain the cup of your evils; but if you become good, you will be so both for yourself and for your neighbor.
63:195
Consider, then, how this very thing came to pass also in the case of those men of old.
63:196
For nothing was ever more wicked than Saul, nor anything more simple and guileless than David.
63:197
那麼,二人之中誰更為剛強呢?大衛豈不是第二次也把他握在手中,既已有權能可以殺他,卻退去了嗎?他豈不是像捉住落網之魚、囚於牢籠一般地擒得了他,卻仍憐惜放過他嗎?而且這還是在別人慫恿之下,他自己又有千萬條可以控告對方的罪狀;
Which of them, then, was the stronger? Did not David hold him a second time in his hands, and, having become master of the power to slay him, withdraw? Did he not have him caught as in a net and a prison house, and yet spared him? And this too when others were provoking him on, and when he himself had ten thousand charges he might have brought against him;
63:198
but nevertheless he let him depart safe and sound.
63:199
況且掃羅是率領全軍追捕他,大衛卻只帶著少數走投無路的逃亡者,四處漂流,不斷從一地遷往另一地;
And yet the one was pursuing him with his whole army, while the other was with but a few desperate fugitives, wandering about and changing from place to place;
63:200
然而那逃亡者卻勝過了那君王;
but nevertheless the fugitive got the better of the king;
63:201
since the one drew up his lines with simplicity, but the other with wickedness.
63:202
For what could be more wicked than that man, who attempted to slay the very one who was general over his army, who was bringing all his wars to a successful end, who bore all the toils of victory and its trophies yet carried the crowns to him? Chapter 5.
63:203
It ever plots against its own possessor's good, and wastes away the man who holds it, and wraps him about with ten thousand calamities.
63:204
And that wretched man, at any rate, so long as David remained near, did not burst forth into that piteous cry, lamenting and saying:
63:205
"I am sore distressed, and the Philistines make war against me, and the Lord is departed from me."
63:206
只要他還沒有與大衛分離,他就不曾在戰陣中敗亡,反倒既在安穩之中,也在榮耀之中;
So long as he was not separated from David, he did not fall in war, but was even in safety and in glory;
63:207
for the glory of the general passed over even unto the king.
63:208
因為這人既無僭越篡位之心,也未曾企圖把掃羅逐下寶座,反倒把一切都為他辦得成功,並且對他滿懷深情;
For neither was the man of a tyrannical disposition, nor did he attempt to cast Saul from his throne; rather he brought everything to good success for him, and was very affectionately disposed toward him;
63:209
and this is plain also from the events that came afterward.
63:210
因為當大衛還在掃羅麾下受其節制的時候,那些不細加察究的人,或許會把這些事歸因於臣屬之義;
For while he was still ranged under Saul's command, one of those who do not examine matters accurately might perhaps have reckoned these things to the law of subjection;
63:211
但當他已經脫離了那王國之後,還有甚麼能約束他、勸他不去與掃羅交戰呢?不,倒不如說,還有甚麼不在激動他去行殺戮呢?掃羅豈不是一次、兩次、甚而多次地惡待了他嗎?他豈不是曾善待掃羅嗎?他豈不是毫無可控告自己之處嗎?掃羅的王權與他自己的性命,對大衛豈不是充滿危險、岌岌可危嗎?只要那人還活著、還掌權,大衛豈不是必須不斷地漂流逃亡、為自己的性命戰兢嗎?然而這一切都不能逼他用血染紅他的刀劍;
but after he had withdrawn himself from that kingdom, what was there left to restrain him and to persuade him to abstain from war against Saul? Nay rather, what was there that did not provoke him to the slaughter? Had not Saul shown himself evil toward him once and twice and many times over? Had not David treated him well? Had he not nothing to lay to his own charge? Was not Saul's kingdom, and his very safety, perilous and precarious for David? Was he not obliged to be forever wandering and fleeing, and trembling for his very life, while that man lived and held power? But nevertheless none of these things forced him to stain his sword with blood;
63:212
反倒是,儘管他看見掃羅正在睡覺,被睡意所縛,孤身一人,又處在他們當中,儘管他已經摸到了他的頭,並且有許多人慫恿他、聲稱這樣的良機乃是神所投下的一票,那人卻既斥責了那些煽動他的人,也戒絕不行殺害,並讓他安然無恙地離去;
but rather, though he saw him sleeping, and bound with slumber, and alone, and in their very midst, and though he had laid hold of his head, and though there were many urging him on and declaring that such an opportunity was a vote cast by God, that man both rebuked those who were inciting him, and refrained from the murder, and sent him away safe and whole;
63:213
and as though he were rather Saul's bodyguard and shield-bearer, not his enemy, so did he reproach the camp for its treachery toward the king.
63:214
還有甚麼能與這樣的靈魂相比呢?還有甚麼能與那樣的溫柔相比呢?這一點,人固然從已述的事上就可看見;
What could be equal to such a soul? What to that gentleness? This, indeed, one may perceive even from the things already told;
63:215
but far more from the things now taking place.
63:216
For when we have thoroughly learned our own baseness, then shall we know more accurately the virtue of those holy men.
63:217
Wherefore I exhort you to run toward the emulation of those men.
63:218
For indeed, if you are enamored of glory, and on this account plot against your neighbor, then it is precisely of that glory
63:219
that you will have the greater enjoyment, when, having spurned it, you hold back from your plotting.
63:220
For just as trafficking for gain is the very opposite way to attain riches when set against covetousness,
63:221
so, with a view to attaining glory, the loving of glory is the contrary course.
63:222
And if you are willing, let us examine the matter point by point.
63:223
For since we have no fear of hell, nor take much account of the kingdom, come, let us at least lead you on from the things of the present.
63:224
因為,誰是那些被人譏笑的人呢?請告訴我;
For who are they that are laughed to scorn? Tell me;
63:225
are they not those who do everything for the sake of the glory that comes from the many? And who are they that are praised? Are they not those who spurn the praise that comes from the many? If, then, to be enamored of vainglory is a reproach, and the vainglorious man cannot escape notice while he is enamored of it, he will assuredly be an object of reproach, and to him the loving of glory has become the cause of dishonor.
63:226
And it is not only in this way that he is put to shame, but also in that he is compelled to do many disgraceful things, being filled with the utmost servility.
63:227
And just as in gaining wealth men are wont to be most injured by the disease of avarice—
63:228
(因為他們遭受許多欺騙,而那微小的利益卻招致巨大的虧損;
(for they undergo many deceptions, and their little gains bring about great losses;
63:229
wherefore the saying has even passed into a proverb, 'This one has won the day')—so also for the licentious man his very passion becomes a hindrance to the enjoyment of pleasure.
63:230
Those, at any rate, who are exceedingly given to lust and enslaved to women—these above all their women carry about like bond-slaves, and would never deign to treat them as men, but slap them, spit upon them, lead them and drag them about everywhere, while they themselves play the wanton and lay every command upon them alone.
63:231
So too, than the man who is beside himself, mad for glory, and thinks himself exalted, there is nothing more lowly and more dishonored.
63:232
For the race of men is contentious, and against nothing else does it set itself in opposition as it does against the boaster, the scorner, and the slave of glory.
63:233
And such a man himself, in order to preserve the outward show of his arrogance, displays toward the multitude the behavior of a slave, flattering, fawning, enduring a bondage more grievous than that of any purchased servant.
63:234
Knowing therefore all these things, let us lay aside these passions, that we may neither suffer punishment here, nor be chastised there without end.
63:235
Let us become lovers of virtue.
63:236
因為這樣,甚至在進入那國度之先,我們就要在今生收取至大的美善,並且離世到那裡去時,也要分享那永恆的福分;
For thus even before the kingdom we shall reap here the greatest blessings, and when we have departed there we shall partake of the eternal good things;
63:237
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might unto the ages of ages.
