那時,巡撫的兵把耶穌帶進衙門,聚集全營的兵在祂那裡;
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered together against him the whole band;
88:2
他們剝了祂的衣服,給祂穿上一件朱紅色的袍子;
and stripping him, they put on him a scarlet robe;
88:3
and having plaited a crown of thorns, they set it upon his head, and put a reed in his right hand.
88:4
And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying:
88:5
Hail, King of the Jews!
88:6
As though at some given signal, the devil then danced in wild frenzy through them all.
88:7
就算猶太人因嫉妒與惡毒而形銷骨立,如醉漢般肆意凌辱祂;
Grant, if you will, that the Jews, wasting away with envy and malice, were reviling him in drunken insolence;
88:8
but the soldiers—from what source and for what reason did they do so? Is it not plain that it was the devil who then held all of them in his bacchic revelry? For being cruel and savage men, they made a pleasure of their outrages against him.
88:9
For whereas they ought to have been abashed, ought to have wept—as indeed the common people did—this they did not do; but on the contrary they heaped insults and leaped upon him, perhaps themselves currying favour with the Jews, or else doing all this out of their own perversity.
88:10
And the insults were of many different and varied kinds.
88:11
For that divine head they at one time buffeted, at another dishonoured with the crown of thorns, and at another smote with the reed—foul and accursed men that they were.
88:12
What excuse, then, shall be left to us when we are stirred to anger over insults, after Christ has suffered these things? For what was done was the utmost limit of outrage.
88:13
因為受凌辱的不只是一個肢體,而是整個身體從頭到腳無一倖免;
For not one member only, but the whole body throughout its entirety was outraged;
88:14
頭是藉著冠冕、蘆葦與拳打;
the head, by the crown and the reed and the buffeting;
88:15
整個身體是藉著鞭打、藉著披上那袍子,以及藉著那假意的跪拜;
the whole body, by the scourgings, by the wrapping about with the robe, and by the feigned obeisance;
88:16
手是藉著那根蘆葦——他們拿它代替王杖交在祂手中;
the hand, by the reed which they gave him to hold instead of a sceptre;
88:17
the mouth again, by the offering of the vinegar.
88:18
What could be more grievous than these things? What more insulting? For what was done surpasses all telling.
88:19
因為他們彷彿唯恐自己的膽大妄為顯得有絲毫欠缺——他們親手殺害了眾先知,卻用審判官的判決除滅這一位——他們就這樣行盡一切;
For as though fearing lest they should seem to fall short in any part of their audacity, having slain the prophets with their own hands, but this One by the sentence of a judge, they thus do everything;
88:20
and they become his very executioners with their own hands, and they condemn him, and they pass sentence against him both before their own tribunal and before Pilate, saying, His blood be upon us and upon our children;
88:21
他們又親自撲向祂、凌辱祂,捆綁祂、拉祂去,並且成了那些兵丁所加凌辱的禍首;
and they leap upon him and outrage him by their own doing, binding him, leading him away, and they make themselves the cause of the insults inflicted by the soldiers;
88:22
and they nail him fast, and they revile him, and they spit upon him, and they make a mockery of him.
88:23
For Pilate contributed nothing here, but they themselves did everything, becoming accusers and judges and executioners and all things at once.
88:24
And these things are read aloud among us, whenever all are gathered together.
88:25
為要使那些希臘人不能說:「你們只把那光彩顯赫的事,如神蹟奇事,展示給群眾和百姓,卻把這些可羞辱的事隱藏起來」;
For that the Greeks might not say, You display to the multitudes and the peoples only the brilliant and conspicuous things—such as the signs and the miracles—but these shameful things you keep hidden;
88:26
聖靈的恩典就這樣安排:在一個萬民共聚的節期,當男女成群結隊都在場,眾人無一例外都聚集,正當逾越節那盛大的夜晚,那時就把這一切都誦讀出來;
the grace of the Spirit so ordered it that at a public festival, when men in full numbers and women are present, and all without exception, on the great evening of the Passover, then all these things should be read aloud;
88:27
when the whole inhabited world is present, then are these things proclaimed with a clear and resounding voice.
88:28
當這些事被誦讀、並且叫眾人都知道的時候,基督就被信為神;
And while these things are being read, and made known to all, Christ is believed to be God;
88:29
and among the other reasons, for these things too he is worshipped, because he deigned to descend so far for our sakes as even to suffer these things, and to train us in all virtue.
88:30
所以,這些事我們當常常誦讀;
These things, therefore, let us read continually;
88:31
for great indeed is the gain, and very great the benefit that comes from it.
88:32
For when you see Him mocked both by gestures and by deeds, and worshipped with so much mockery, and buffeted with the fist, and suffering the uttermost things, then, even if you were stone itself, you would become softer than any wax, and would cast out from your soul every inflammation of pride.
88:33
Hear then also what follows.
88:34
For after they had mocked Him, it says, they led Him away to crucify Him; and having stripped Him, they took His garments, and sitting down they watched Him, waiting for when He would breathe His last.
88:35
他們又彼此分了祂的衣服;
And they parted His garments among themselves;
88:36
which is done in the case of those condemned criminals who are utterly worthless and cast off, who have no one belonging to them, and who are bereft of all help.
88:37
They divided the garments through which such great miracles had been wrought.
88:38
But nothing was then at work, since Christ was holding back His ineffable power.
88:39
And this too was no small addition to their drunken insolence.
88:40
For as against one dishonoured and cast off, as I said, and the most worthless of all, so they dared to do all these things.
88:41
At any rate, against the robbers they did nothing of the kind, but against Christ they did everything.
88:42
And they crucified Him in the midst, that He might share in the shame belonging to those men.
88:43
他們又拿醋給祂喝,這也是出於凌辱;
And they gave Him vinegar to drink, and this too by way of insult;
88:44
and another Evangelist says that, having tasted it, He said, 'It is finished.'
88:45
But what does 'It is finished' mean? The prophecy concerning Him has been fulfilled.
88:46
For 'they gave Me,' it says, 'gall for My food, and in My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink.'
88:47
那位福音書作者也並未表明祂喝了它;
Nor does that Evangelist show that He drank it;
88:48
for merely to taste differs in nothing from not drinking, but signifies one and the same thing.
88:49
然而他們那狂醉般的橫暴,連在此處也不肯止息,反倒在剝了祂的衣服、釘了祂十字架、給祂喝了醋之後,還變本加厲;
But nevertheless not even here does their drunken insolence come to a stand, but having stripped Him, and crucified Him, and offered Him vinegar, they go yet further;
88:50
他們看見祂被釘懸在十字架上,無論是他們自己,還是那些經過的人,都譏誚祂;
and seeing Him impaled upon the cross, both they themselves and those who passed by reviled Him;
88:51
which was the most grievous thing of all—to suffer these things under the charge of being a deceiver and an impostor, and as a braggart who vainly boasted of the things He said.
88:52
為此他們就公開地把祂釘十字架,好在眾人眼前羞辱示眾;
For this reason they also crucified Him publicly, that in the sight of all they might make a spectacle of Him;
88:53
for this reason too by soldiers' hands, that, these things being dared even in a public tribunal, the measure of their drunken insolence might be heightened.
88:54
And yet whom would the crowd that followed Him and lamented not have moved to pity? But not these wild beasts.
88:55
For this very reason He too deems those worthy of an answer, but these no longer.
88:56
For after doing what they wished, they are eager also to destroy His glory, dreading His resurrection.
88:57
For this reason they say these things publicly, and crucified robbers together with Him, and, wishing to show Him a deceiver, they said:
88:58
'You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, come down from the cross.'
88:59
因為他們曾告訴彼拉多要除去那牌子的字(那字就是「猶太人的王」),卻毫無成效,反倒他堅持說:「我所寫的,我已經寫上了」;
For since, when they had told Pilate to do away with the inscription (and this was the writing, 'The King of the Jews'), they had prevailed nothing, but he had stood firm, saying, 'What I have written, I have written';
88:60
so now they themselves attempted, by means of their mockeries, to show that He was not a king.
88:61
Wherefore they said both those things and these:
88:62
'If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross';
88:63
又說:「祂救了別人,不能救自己」;
and again, 'He saved others, He cannot save Himself';
88:64
他們又由此著手,企圖連祂先前所行的神蹟也一併毀謗;
and from this they set about to slander His former signs as well;
88:65
and again, 'If He is the Son of God, and He wills Him, let Him save Him.'
88:66
But what of it? Were the prophets not prophets, nor the righteous righteous, because God did not snatch them out of their perils? Nay, surely they were, even while suffering these things.
88:67
那麼,還有什麼能與你們的愚昧相比呢?因為若危難臨到他們,在你們看來並未毀損他們的榮耀,他們反倒在承受所受之苦時仍是先知;
What then could equal your folly? For if the coming upon them of perils did not, in your esteem, mar their glory, but they were prophets even while suffering what they suffered;
88:68
much more in His case ought you not to have been offended, since both by what He did and by what He said He had always beforehand corrected this suspicion of yours.
88:69
But nevertheless, even though these things were said and done, they prevailed nothing, not even at that very moment.
88:70
至少那在極端的邪惡中腐爛、在兇殺與盜竊中虛度一生的人,正當這些話被說出來的時候,就在那時認了祂,並且題到祂的國;
At any rate, the one who had rotted away in the uttermost wickedness, and had spent his whole life in murders and burglaries, at the very time when these things were being said, then confessed Him, and made mention of His kingdom;
88:71
and the people bewailed Him.
88:72
然而,對那些不明白這奧祕之安排的人來說,所發生的事似乎正證明了相反的情形,就是說祂軟弱、無能為力;
And yet, to those who did not know the dispensation of the mystery, the things that were happening seemed to testify to the contrary — that He was weak and able to do nothing;
88:73
but nevertheless the truth prevailed even through the very things that opposed it.
88:74
Hearing these things, then, let us arm ourselves against all wrath, against all anger.
88:75
若你看見自己的心中怒火燃燒,就當在胸前劃十字,以十字架印記封住它;
And if you see your heart inflamed, seal your breast, setting the cross upon it;
88:76
call to mind something of the things that happened at that time, and, as though it were dust, you will cast out all wrath by the remembrance of what took place.
88:77
思想那些話語,思想那些作為;
Consider the words, consider the deeds;
88:78
思想祂是主,而你是僕人;
consider that He is Master, and you are a servant;
88:79
祂是為你的緣故受苦,你卻是為你自己;
that He suffered for your sake, but you for your own;
88:80
祂是為那些曾蒙祂施恩、卻又把祂釘上十字架的人受苦,你卻是為自己受苦;
He suffered on behalf of those whom He had benefited and who nonetheless crucified Him, but you on behalf of yourself;
88:81
祂是為那些侮辱祂的人受苦,你卻往往是被你自己所虧負的人所加害;
He on behalf of those who had insulted Him, but you often at the hands of the very ones who had been wronged by you;
88:82
祂是在全城眾人的注視之下受苦,更確切地說,是在猶太全體民眾面前,包括外邦人與本地人,就是祂曾在他們面前說出滿有慈愛之言語的那些人;你卻只在少數幾個人在場時受苦;
He in the sight of the whole city — nay rather, of the whole populace of the Jews, both strangers and natives, before whom He had uttered His words of loving-kindness — but you with only a few present;
88:83
and what added still greater insult was that even His disciples forsook Him.
88:84
Οἱ μὲν γὰρ .
因為那些先前服事祂的人,都跳身逃開了;
For those who before were attending upon Him leaped away and fled;
88:85
while His enemies and foes, having taken Him impaled in their midst,
88:86
辱罵祂、譏誚祂、嗤笑祂、戲弄祂;
reviled Him, made Him a mockery, laughed, and jeered at Him;
88:87
下面是猶太人和兵丁;
the Jews and the soldiers from below;
88:88
上面則是兩邊的強盜;
from above, and on either side, the robbers;
88:89
for indeed the robbers also insulted Him, and both of them reproached Him.
88:90
那麼,路加為何說只有其中一個譏誚祂呢?其實兩種情形都發生過;
How then does Luke say that only one of them reproached Him? Both things happened;
88:91
for at first both reproached Him, but afterwards no longer so.
88:92
For lest you should think that the thing came about by some prior arrangement, or that the robber was not truly a robber, He shows you from the man's insolence that up there on the cross he was a robber and an enemy, and yet was suddenly transformed.
88:93
Reckoning up all these things, then, be a lover of wisdom.
88:94
For what do you suffer such as your Master suffered? Have you been insulted in public? But not in such a manner.
88:95
Are you mocked? But not your whole body, nor while being scourged and stripped naked in such a way.
88:96
And even if you have been struck on the cheek, yet not in such a manner.
88:97
還要為我再想想:是被誰所害、為著甚麼緣故、在甚麼時候,以及你是甚麼人;
Add for me, too, by whom, and why, and when, and who you are;
88:98
而最叫人難堪的,乃是當這些事發生的時候,竟沒有一個人出來控告,沒有一個人責怪所發生的事;
and — what is the hardest of all — that, while these things were being done, no one made accusation, no one found fault with what was happening;
88:99
but on the contrary, they all applauded, and joined in the mockery, and joined in the derision, and reviled Him as a braggart and an impostor and a deceiver, and as one unable to prove by deeds the things which He had said.
88:100
But He kept silence to it all, preparing for us the greatest of remedies for long-suffering.
88:101
但我們雖然聽見這些事,卻連對待家中的僕人也不能忍耐,反倒比野驢更甚地又跳又踢;
Yet we, though we hear these things, do not hold out even toward our own household servants, but leap and kick more than wild asses;
88:102
being cruel and inhuman in regard to the wrongs done against ourselves, while making little account of the wrongs done against God.
88:103
我們對待朋友也是這樣;
And toward our friends likewise are we disposed;
88:104
若有人叫我們憂傷,我們就受不了;
if any one grieves us, we do not bear it;
88:105
and if any one insults us, we grow more savage than wild beasts — we who read these very things every single day.
88:106
其餘的人都離棄祂逃跑了;
The rest, forsaking Him, fled;
88:107
那些曾蒙祂施恩的人向祂吐唾沫;
those whom He had benefited spat upon Him;
88:108
大祭司的僕人打了祂一掌;
the servant of the high priest struck Him;
88:109
兵丁用拳頭打祂;
the soldiers buffeted Him;
88:110
從那裏經過的人譏誚祂、辱罵祂;
those who passed by jeered at Him and reviled Him;
88:111
yet He uttered not a word against any of them, but by His silence overcame them all, teaching you through His deeds that the more meekly you endure, so much the more will you prevail over those who do you evil, and be an object of wonder in the sight of all.
88:112
有誰不會欽佩那溫和地承受欺凌者辱罵之人呢?正如一個人即使受苦是罪有應得,只要他溫柔地承受這惡待,眾人便會認為他是無辜受苦;
For who will not marvel at the man who bears with gentleness the insults of those who wrong him? For just as, even if a man suffers justly, yet endures the evil meekly, he is reckoned by most people to be suffering unjustly;
88:113
so too, even if a man suffers unjustly, yet behaves insolently, he will be suspected of suffering justly, and will become a laughing-stock, as one dragged along like a captive by his own wrath, and losing his own nobility.
88:114
For such a man ought not even to be called free, even if he be master of ten thousand slaves.
88:115
但某人狠狠地激怒了你?那又如何?因為正是那時候,才該展現真正的智慧與修養;
But so-and-so provoked you fiercely? And what of that? For that is precisely the time to display true wisdom;
88:116
正如當沒有人去挑逗牠們時,我們甚至會看見野獸也顯得溫馴;
just as, when there is none to irritate them, we shall behold even the wild beasts as tame;
88:117
for neither are those creatures always savage, but only when someone rouses them up.
88:118
所以我們若只在無人激怒我們時才保持平靜,那又有甚麼益處呢?因為那些野獸往往還是有正當理由才發怒的,牠們有許多可為自己辯解之處;
We too, therefore, if we are calm only then, when there is no one to provoke us, what advantage is there in it? For those creatures often grow angry even with justice, and have much to plead in their defense;
88:119
因為牠們確實是被觸動、被刺激才被激起的;
for indeed it is by being moved and goaded that they are roused up;
88:120
and apart from this, they are also destitute of reason, and have savageness in their very nature.
88:121
But you—tell me—when you become savage and wild, from what source will you be able to obtain pardon? What dreadful thing have you suffered? Were you robbed? Why, for that very reason you ought to bear it, so as to gain the greater profit.
88:122
But you were deprived of glory? And what of that? For your affairs are in no way diminished by this, if you practice true wisdom.
88:123
但你若沒有遭受甚麼可怕的事,你為何要向那沒有加害於你、反倒使你得益的人發怒呢?因為那些尊崇我們的人,會使我們這些不警醒的人變得更加鬆懈放縱;
But if you suffer nothing dreadful, why are you angry with one who has done you no harm, but has even benefited you? For those who honor us make us who are not sober even more slack and dissolute;
88:124
but those who insult and despise us make those who attend to themselves more steadfast and enduring.
88:125
For indeed the slothful are more injured by being honored than by being insulted.
88:126
而這些侮辱我們的人,只要我們警醒,反倒成為我們得著真智慧的緣由;
And these people, if we are sober, become for us a cause of true wisdom;
88:127
but the others puff up our conceit, fill us with arrogance, vainglory, and folly, and render our soul more effeminate.
88:128
作父親的可為此作見證,他們寧可責備自己的兒子,也不多加奉承,因為他們懼怕兒子會因奉承而受到甚麼損害;
And to this the fathers bear witness, who do not so much flatter their own sons as chide them, fearing lest they should receive some harm from thence;
88:129
and the teachers too use this same remedy toward them.
88:130
人應當寧可責備,也不要奉承;
one ought rather to rebuke than to flatter;
88:131
for this bait brings a greater ruin than insult does to those who are not on their guard, and it is more difficult to hold this in check than that passion.
88:132
And the reward too is far greater from this course, and the admiration it wins is greater.
88:133
For indeed it is more admirable to see a man insulted and not moved, than one struck and beaten and not falling down.
88:134
And how is it possible not to be moved? someone says.
88:135
有人侮辱了你嗎?就在你胸前劃上十字聖號;
Has someone insulted you? Place the sign of the cross upon your breast;
88:136
call to mind all that was accomplished for you at that time, and everything will be quenched.
88:137
Do not consider only the insults, but if any kindness has ever been done to you by the one who has insulted you, and you will at once become gentle.
88:138
Or rather, before all things, consider the fear of God, and you will speedily become moderate and forbearing.
88:139
Together with these things, take also from your own household servants the admonition concerning these matters.
88:140
And when you see yourself insulting, and him keeping silence, consider that it is possible to practice true wisdom, and condemn yourself for being harsh, and in the very moment of the insults be trained not to insult; and thus, even when insulted, you will feel no pain.
88:141
要想到那侮辱人的是失了常態、狂亂發瘋,這樣你受辱時就不會惱怒了;
Consider that the one who insults is beside himself and raving mad, and you will not be indignant when insulted;
88:142
since even those who are possessed by demons strike us, and we not only are not moved, but even pity them.
88:143
因為他被一頭可怕的野獸——就是忿怒——牢牢挾制住了;
For he is held fast by a terrible beast—by wrath;
88:144
set him free, for he is worked upon by a grievous demon, and in a brief moment is being destroyed.
88:145
For such is this malady, that it does not even need time for the ruin of the one who is seized by it.
88:146
因為忿怒的那一衝動,本身就是他的傾覆;
For the very impulse of wrath is itself his fall;
88:147
而它正是在這一點上最顯出其暴虐的本性,就是它在頃刻之間便造成極大的禍害,並不需要長久的時日;
and in this it most of all displays its tyrannical character, that in a brief moment it works great evils, and needs no long delay;
88:148
for if, in addition to its strength, it were also lasting, it would be well-nigh impossible to overcome.
88:149
I could wish to show who is the one who insults and who is the one who practices true wisdom, and to bring the soul of each of them naked into the midst.
88:150
For you would have seen the one resembling a sea tossed by the storm, and the other a harbor freed from all turmoil.
88:151
For neither is it troubled by these wicked spirits, and it easily dissolves them as well.
88:152
因為那些侮辱人的,無所不用其極,只為刺痛人心;
For those who insult do everything in order to sting;
88:153
when therefore they fall short of this hope, they too thereafter give up, and depart corrected.
88:154
因為一個發怒的人,不可能不強烈地譴責自己;
For it is not possible that a man in anger should not vehemently condemn himself;
88:155
just as, then, it is not possible for one not in anger to condemn himself.
88:156
For even if it be necessary to proceed against someone, it is possible to do this without anger, both more easily and more prudently than with anger, and to suffer nothing unpleasant.
88:157
For if we will, our good things shall come from ourselves, and we shall be self-sufficient, with the grace of God, for our own security and honour.
88:158
你為何求那從別人而來的榮耀呢?你當尊重自己,就沒有人能侮辱你;
For why do you seek the glory that comes from another? Honour yourself, and no one will be able to insult you;
88:159
but if you dishonour yourself, then even though all men honour you, you will not be honoured.
88:160
因為正如我們若不苦待自己,別人就無從苦待我們;
For just as, if we do not treat ourselves ill, no other man will treat us ill;
88:161
so likewise, if we do not insult ourselves, no other man will put us to shame.
88:162
設想有一位可敬又偉大的人,而眾人都稱他為姦夫、盜賊、掘墓者、兇手、強盜;
For let there be some admirable and great man, and let all men call him adulterer, thief, tomb-robber, murderer, brigand;
88:163
但他既不被激怒,也不憤慨,也不自覺良心上有這些事中的任何一樣;
but let him neither be provoked, nor be indignant, nor be conscious of any of these things in himself;
88:164
what insult will he suffer from this? None at all.
88:165
What then, one says, if many hold such an opinion concerning him?
88:166
Not even so is he insulted; rather, those men have put themselves to shame, in reckoning one who is not such to be such.
88:167
For tell me, if someone should reckon the sun to be dark, has he slandered the star, or himself? Himself clearly, having fastened upon himself the reputation of a blind man or a madman.
88:168
So also those who reckon the wicked to be good, and those who do the contrary, put themselves to shame.
88:169
因此我們當更加殷勤,好潔淨我們的良心,不給人任何可攻擊我們的把柄,也不留下任何邪惡的疑竇;
Wherefore we ought to make greater endeavour so as to cleanse our conscience, and to give no handle against ourselves, nor any evil suspicion;
88:170
but if others should choose to rage even when we are thus disposed, not to be greatly concerned, nor to grieve.
88:171
因為一個本是好人卻得了惡人名聲的,就其實在的為人而言,絲毫不受這名聲的損害;
For he who receives the reputation of a wicked man, while being good, is in no way harmed thereby as to being such as he is;
88:172
但那無故且徒然起疑心的人,卻蒙受了最大的傷害;
but he who has suspected without cause and in vain has received the uttermost injury;
88:173
and if he be suspected in the contrary way, he will gain nothing thereby, but will both incur greater condemnation, and will come to greater slothfulness.
88:174
因為一個實在如此又被人疑心的人,或許還會謙卑下來,認識自己的罪;
For he who is indeed such and is suspected, may even be humbled and come to recognise his own sins;
88:175
but when he passes unnoticed, he falls into insensibility.
88:176
因為即使眾人都指責他們,犯錯的人尚且難得被激動而生痛悔之心;
For if, even when all accuse them, those who offend are scarcely roused to compunction;
88:177
when not only do some not accuse them, but even praise them, when shall those who live in wickedness be able to see clearly? Do you not hear that Paul also brings this charge, that the Corinthians not only did not permit the fornicator to recognise his own sin, applauding and honouring him, but even thereby drove him further into wickedness? Wherefore I exhort you, laying aside the surmises of the many, both the insults and the honours, let us be earnest for one thing only: to be conscious of nothing wicked in ourselves, and not to insult ourselves.
88:178
因為這樣,無論在今世還是在來世,我們都必享受極大的榮耀;
For thus both here and in the world to come we shall enjoy great glory;
88:179
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages.
