And Jesus, having gone out into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, asked his disciples, saying:
55:2
"Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"
55:3
For what reason did He name it the city of its founder? Because there is also another city, that of Strato.
55:4
And it is not there, but in this place, that He questions them, leading them far away from the Jews, so that, being freed from all fear, they might with boldness speak all that was in their mind.
55:5
And for what reason did He not immediately ask their own opinion, but that of the multitude? So that, after they had stated the opinion of those others, and were then asked, 'But whom do you say that I am?', they might by the very manner of the question be raised to a higher conception, and not fall into the same lowliness as the many.
55:6
正因如此,祂在傳道之初並沒有向他們發問;
For this very reason He did not inquire of them at the beginning of His preaching;
55:7
but when He had performed many signs, and had discoursed to them concerning many lofty doctrines, and had furnished many proofs both of His own Godhead and of His oneness of mind with the Father, then He brought this question to them.
55:8
And He did not say, 'Whom do the scribes and the Pharisees say that I am?'—and yet these often came to Him and conversed with Him—
55:9
but, 'Whom do men say that I am?'—inquiring into the unbiased judgement of the common people.
55:10
因為那看法縱然遠比應有的更為卑淺,卻至少沒有惡意;
For even if it was far more lowly than it ought to have been, still it was free from malice;
55:11
whereas the other was laden with much wickedness.
55:12
And showing how greatly He desires that the divine dispensation should be confessed, He says, 'the Son of man,' thereby naming His Godhead, as He also does in many other places.
55:13
For He says, 'No one has ascended into heaven, except the Son of man who is in heaven';
55:14
'the Son of man ascending to where He was before.'
55:15
Then, since they had said, 'Some say John the Baptist, and some Elijah, and some Jeremiah, and some one of the prophets,'
55:16
並且把他們那錯謬的看法擺在眾人面前;
and had brought forward into the midst their erroneous opinion;
55:17
'But whom do you say that I am?'—calling them forth by this second question to imagine something greater concerning Him, and showing them that the former verdict fell far short of His dignity.
55:18
Therefore He seeks from them another answer, and adds a second question, that they might not fall in with the multitude, who, since they saw the signs to be greater than belonged to a mere man, supposed indeed that He was a man, but one who had appeared from a resurrection, even as Herod also said.
55:19
But leading them away from this suspicion, He says:
55:20
'But whom do you say that I am?'—that is, 'You who are always with Me, and see Me working wonders, and have yourselves performed many mighty works through Me.'
55:21
What then does Peter, the mouth of the apostles, the one everywhere fervent, the leader of the apostolic band? When all were asked, he alone answers.
55:22
當祂詢問眾人的看法時,眾門徒都把所問的說了出來;
And when He asked the opinion of the people, all spoke the thing that was asked;
55:23
but when He asked their own, Peter springs forward and anticipates the rest, and says:
55:24
'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'
55:25
What then does the Christ? 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood did not reveal it to you.'
55:26
誠然,若彼得沒有真實地承認祂,並承認祂是從父自己所生的,那麼這就不是啟示的工作了;
And indeed, if he had not confessed Him genuinely, and as begotten from the Father Himself, this would not have been the work of revelation;
55:27
if he had supposed Him to be one of the many, what was said would not have deserved a blessing.
55:28
Since even before this those in the boat, after the tossing which they had seen, said, 'Truly You are the Son of God,' and yet they were not pronounced blessed, although they spoke truly.
55:29
因為他們所承認的兒子名分,並不像彼得所承認的那樣;
For they did not confess such a sonship as Peter did;
55:30
but they supposed Him truly to be one son among many—preeminent indeed above the many, yet not out of the very essence of God.
55:31
拿但業也曾說:「拉比,你是神的兒子,你是以色列的王」;
And Nathanael also said, 'Rabbi, You are the Son of God, You are the King of Israel';
55:32
and not only is he not pronounced blessed, but he is even rebuked by Him as having spoken something far short of the truth.
55:33
'Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.'
55:34
For what reason then is this man pronounced blessed? Because he confessed Him to be a genuine Son.
55:35
正因如此,對於那些人,祂沒有說任何這類的話;
For this very reason, in the case of those others He said nothing of the kind;
55:36
but in the case of this man He also points out the One who revealed it.
55:37
免得眾人以為,彼得既是熱切愛慕基督的人,他的話便出於友情、諂媚,並出於一種要討祂喜悅的心意,祂便把那位在他靈裡發聲的擺在眾人面前;
For lest it should seem to the multitude that, because Peter was a fervent lover of Christ, his words were those of friendship and flattery, and of a disposition seeking to gratify Him, He brings forward into the midst the One who had spoken these things within his soul;
55:38
好叫你明白:彼得固然說出了這話,父卻是那默示這話的;
that you may learn that Peter indeed uttered the words, but the Father prompted them;
55:39
and that you may no longer believe what was said to be human opinion, but a divine doctrine.
55:40
And for what reason does He not Himself declare it, nor say it outright,
55:41
but establishes this through the question, bringing them in as those who confess it? Because in this way it was at that time both more fitting for Him and necessary, and it the more drew them on to faith in the things spoken.
55:42
Have you seen how the Father reveals the Son, and how the Son reveals the Father? For 'no one knows the Father,' He says, 'except the Son, and he to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.'
55:43
由此可見,除了藉著父,斷不能從別人認識子;
It is not possible, then, to learn the Son from any other than from the Father;
55:44
nor to learn the Father from any other than from the Son.
55:45
So that from this too their equal honour and identity of essence is made plain.
55:46
What then does Christ say? 'You are Simon the son of Jonah.'
55:47
'Since you have proclaimed My Father,' He says, 'I too name Him who begot you;'
55:48
all but saying, that 'Just as you are the child of Jonah, so also am I of My own Father.'
55:49
不然的話,這樣說原是多餘的;
For otherwise it would have been superfluous to say it;
55:50
but since he had said 'Son of God,' in order to show that He is Son of God in this very way, just as that man is son of Jonah, of the same essence as the one who begot Him, for this reason He added this.
55:51
'And I also say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church;'
55:52
that is, upon the faith of the confession.
55:53
Herein He shows that many were now about to believe, and He raises up Peter's spirit, and makes him a shepherd.
55:54
'And the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.'
55:55
And if they shall not prevail against it, much less against Me.
55:56
that you be not troubled when you are about to hear that 'I shall be betrayed and crucified.'
55:57
接著,祂又提到另一份尊榮;
Then He speaks also of another honour;
55:58
'And I will give to you the keys of the heavens.'
55:59
But what is the meaning of 'And I also will give to you'? Just as the Father gave to you to know Me, so also I will give to you.
55:60
And He did not say, 'I will beseech the Father;'
55:61
然而這權柄的彰顯何等浩大,這恩賜的偉大更是無法言喻;
and yet great was the display of His authority, and the greatness of the gift unspeakable;
55:62
'that whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in the heavens;'
55:63
'and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in the heavens.'
55:64
既然是祂說「我要給你」,那麼賜人坐在左右邊,怎會不是祂所能作的呢?你看見祂如何也把彼得提升到對祂自己崇高的認識,並且啟示祂自己,藉著這兩項應許顯明祂是神的兒子嗎?因為那些惟獨屬於神的事——赦免罪、使教會在如此洶湧的波濤衝擊中屹立不搖、使一個漁夫、一個凡人在全世界都與他為敵時比任何磐石更加堅固——這些事都是祂親自應許要賜下的;
How then is it not His to grant the sitting on the right hand and on the left, when it is He who says, 'I will give to you'? Do you see how He too leads Peter up to a lofty conception concerning Himself, and reveals Himself, and shows that He is the Son of God through these two promises? For the things which belong to God alone—both to remit sins, and to make the Church unshaken amid so great an onset of waves, and to render a fisherman, a mere man, firmer than any rock while the whole world wars against him—these things He Himself promises to give;
55:65
even as the Father, discoursing with Jeremiah, said
55:66
說要立他如銅柱、如城牆;
that He would make him as a pillar of bronze and as a wall;
55:67
but that man to one nation, whereas this one throughout the whole world.
55:68
Gladly then would I ask those who wish to lessen the dignity of the Son:
55:69
父賜給彼得的恩賜較大呢,還是子所賜的較大呢?因為父白白賜給彼得對子的啟示;
Which are the greater gifts, those which the Father gave to Peter, or those which the Son gave? For the Father graciously granted to Peter the revelation of the Son;
55:70
but the Son sowed abroad the knowledge both of the Father and of Himself throughout the whole world, and committed to a mortal man authority over all things in heaven, giving him the keys—He who extended the Church throughout the whole world, and declared it stronger than heaven.
55:71
'For heaven and earth shall pass away;'
55:72
'but My words shall by no means pass away.'
55:73
那賜下這樣的事、成就這樣的事的,怎會是較小的呢?我這樣說,並不是要分割父與子的工作;
How then is He the less, who bestowed such things, who accomplished such things? And I say this, not dividing the works of the Father and of the Son;
55:74
'For all things were made through Him, and without Him was made not even one thing;'
55:75
but rather stopping the shameless tongue of those who dare such things.
55:76
And behold His authority throughout all these things.
55:77
'I say to you, you are Peter;'
55:78
'I will build the Church;'
55:79
'I will give to you the keys of the heavens.'
55:80
And then, having said these things, 'He charged them that they should tell no one that He was the Christ.'
55:81
And for what reason did He charge them? So that, when those who caused offence were removed out of the way, and the cross was accomplished, and the rest of what He was to suffer had been brought to completion, and there was nothing left to interrupt and to trouble the faith of the many in Him, the fitting glory concerning Him might be stamped pure and immovable upon the mind of the hearers.
55:82
For as yet His power had not shone forth clearly.
55:83
For this reason He willed to be proclaimed by them at that time, when both the clear truth of the events and the power of the things that were happening bore witness together with the words spoken by the apostles.
55:84
因為這並不相同:一面看見祂如今在巴勒斯坦行神蹟,一面又看見祂受侮辱、被驅逐;
For it was not the same thing to see Him now working miracles in Palestine, and now being insulted and driven out;
55:85
(and especially since the cross was about to follow upon the miracles that were being done;) and to behold Him worshipped and believed in throughout the whole world, no longer suffering any such things as He suffered.
55:86
For this reason He says to tell no one.
55:87
因為那已經一度紮了根、隨後又被拔起來的,若要再種下、在眾人中間站立得住,便很困難;
For that which has once been rooted, and then torn up, could with difficulty be planted again and take hold among the multitude;
55:88
but that which, after having once been fixed firmly, remains unmoved and is in no way assaulted, easily grows up and yields a greater increase.
55:89
因為那些已經得享許多神蹟、又領受了那麼多不可言喻之奧祕的人,尚且僅僅因為聽見就跌倒了;
For if those who had enjoyed many signs, and had partaken of so many ineffable mysteries, were offended by the mere hearing;
55:90
更確切地說,不僅是他們,連眾人的領袖彼得也是如此;
or rather, not they alone, but even Peter, the chief of them all;
55:91
consider what the multitude were likely to have suffered, who had learned indeed that He is the Son of God, but saw Him both crucified and spat upon, and knew not the ineffable meaning of these mysteries, nor had partaken of the Holy Spirit.
55:92
For if to the disciples He said:
55:93
'I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now;'
55:94
much more would the rest of the people have fallen away, if before the fitting time
55:95
the very summit of these mysteries had been revealed to them.
55:96
For this reason He forbids them to speak.
55:97
And that you may learn how great a thing it was afterwards to receive the teaching in its fullness, once those things that gave offence had passed away, learn it from this very chief of the apostles.
55:98
For this very Peter, who after so many signs appeared so weak as even to deny Him and to be afraid of a lowly serving-girl, once the cross had come to pass and he had received clear proofs of the resurrection, and there was nothing left to offend and trouble him, so unshakably held fast the teaching of the Spirit that he leaped upon the people of the Jews more fiercely than a lion, though dangers and countless deaths were threatened.
55:99
With good reason, then, did He command the multitude not to speak of it before the cross, seeing that not even into those who were destined to teach did He instil all things. He took courage before the cross.
55:100
'For I have many things to say to you,' He says, 'but you cannot bear them now.'
55:101
And of the things He had spoken they were ignorant of many, which He did not make plain before the cross.
55:102
At any rate, when He had risen, then they understood some of the things that had been said.
55:103
'From that time He began to show them that He must suffer.'
55:104
何時呢?當祂已在他們心中穩固地立定了那教義的時候;
When? When He had fixed firmly in them the doctrine;
55:105
when He had brought in the beginning of the Gentiles.
55:106
但即便如此,他們仍不明白所說的話;
But not even so did they understand what was said;
55:107
'For the saying,' it says, 'was hidden from them;'
55:108
and they were as it were in a certain obscurity, not knowing that He must rise again.
55:109
For this reason He dwells upon the difficulties and expands His discourse, that He may open their understanding, and that they may grasp what it is that is being said.
55:110
But 'they understood not, but the saying was hidden from them;'
55:111
'and they feared to ask Him;'
55:112
not whether He would die, but how and in what manner, and what this mystery could be.
55:113
For neither did they know what this very thing, to rise again, could be, and they thought it far better that He should not die.
55:114
正因如此,當其餘的人都攪擾困惑之時,彼得因為熱心,又獨自敢於談論這些事;
For this reason, while the rest were troubled and perplexed, again Peter, being fervent, alone dares to discourse about these matters;
55:115
然而連他也不是公開地說,而是把祂拉到一邊私下裡說;
and even he not openly, but taking Him aside privately;
55:116
就是說,他把自己從其餘的門徒中分別出來;
that is, separating himself from the rest of the disciples;
55:117
'Be it far from You, Lord: this shall never happen to You.'
55:118
What can this mean? He who had obtained the revelation, who had been pronounced blessed—did this man so quickly fall and stumble, as to be afraid of the passion? And what wonder is it that one who had not received a revelation concerning these things should suffer this? For that you may learn that not even those other words did he utter from himself, observe in these matters that were not revealed to him how he is troubled and turned about, and though hearing it countless times knows not what it is that is being said.
55:119
因為祂是神的兒子,這他已經知道了;
For that He is the Son of God, he had learned;
55:120
but what the mystery of the cross and of the resurrection might be, had not yet become plain to him.
55:121
For 'the saying,' it says, 'was hidden from them.'
55:122
Do you see that with justice He commanded the others not to speak of it? For if He so troubled those whom it was necessary should learn it, what would the rest not have suffered? He, however, showing that He was so far from coming unwillingly to the passion, both rebuked Peter and called him Satan.
55:123
Let those give ear who are ashamed of the passion of the cross of Christ.
55:124
For if the chief of the apostles, even before he had learned all things clearly, was called 'Satan' for suffering this fault, what pardon could they find who, after so great a demonstration, deny the dispensation? For when he who was so blessed, who had made such a confession, hears such words, consider what those shall suffer who after these things set aside the mystery of the cross.
55:125
祂並沒有說:「撒但藉著你說話」;
And He did not say, 'Satan has spoken through you';
55:126
but, 'Get behind Me, Satan.'
55:127
For indeed it was the desire of the adversary that Christ should not suffer.
55:128
For this reason He rebuked him with so great vehemence, since He knew that both Peter himself and the others were especially afraid of this, and would not easily accept it.
55:129
For this reason also He lays bare the thoughts of his mind, saying:
55:130
'You do not mind the things of God, but the things of men.'
55:131
But what does this mean, 'You do not mind the things of God, but the things of men'? He, examining the matter by human and earthly reasoning, thought that this was shameful and unbecoming to Christ.
55:132
Reaching him home, therefore, He says:
55:133
「我受難並非不合宜;
'It is not unbecoming that I should suffer;
55:134
你以屬肉體的看法才這樣論斷這些事;
it is by a carnal judgment that you reckon these things thus;
55:135
for if you heard what is spoken according to God, freed from the carnal mind, you would know that this is most fitting for Me.'
55:136
「因為你以為受難是與我不相稱的;
'For you indeed suppose that to suffer is unworthy of Me;
55:137
但我告訴你,我不受難才是出於魔鬼的心思」;
but I tell you that for Me not to suffer belongs to the devil's mind';
55:138
by means of the opposites calming his anxiety.
55:139
因為正如祂勸服了約翰——約翰自以為為祂施洗是不配的——說:「我們理當這樣行」;
For just as He persuaded John, who deemed himself unworthy to baptize Him, to baptize Him by saying, 'Thus it is fitting for us';
55:140
又正如這同一個彼得,攔阻祂洗他的腳時,祂對他說:「我若不洗你的腳,你就與我無分」;
and this same Peter, when he hindered Him from washing his feet, by saying, 'You have no part with Me, unless I wash your feet';
55:141
so also here He restrained him by means of the opposites, and by the vehemence of the rebuke He quelled his fear over the suffering.
55:142
所以,誰也不要以我們救恩那可敬的標記為恥,那是眾福的總綱,我們藉它得以存活,也藉它成為現今的我們;
Let no one, therefore, be ashamed of the venerable symbols of our salvation, and of the sum of our blessings, through which we both live and are what we are;
55:143
but as a crown, so let us carry about the cross of Christ.
55:144
For indeed all things that concern us are accomplished through it.
55:145
無論人需要重生,十字架就在其中;
Whether one must be born again, the cross is present;
55:146
whether one must be nourished with that mystical food, whether one must be ordained, whether one must do any other thing whatsoever, everywhere the symbol of our victory stands beside us.
55:147
For this reason also, upon our houses, and upon the walls, and upon the windows, and upon the forehead, and upon the mind, with much diligence we inscribe it.
55:148
For this is the sign of the salvation wrought on our behalf, and of the common freedom, and of the gentleness of our Master.
55:149
'For as a sheep He was led to the slaughter.'
55:150
Whenever, therefore, you sign yourself, call to mind the whole meaning of the cross, and quench wrath and all the other passions.
55:151
Whenever you sign yourself, fill your forehead with much boldness, make your soul free.
55:152
And you surely know what those things are that furnish freedom.
55:153
Wherefore Paul also, leading us on to this—I mean to the freedom that is proper to us—led us on thus, by reminding us of the cross and of the Master's blood.
55:154
他說:「你們是重價買來的」;
'For you were bought with a price,' he says;
55:155
'do not become slaves of men.'
55:156
他說:「你要思想那為你所付的重價,你就不作任何人的奴僕了」;
'Consider,' he says, 'the price that was paid for you, and you will be a slave to none of men';
55:157
For one ought not simply to trace it with the finger, but first with the will and with much faith.
55:158
And if you thus imprint it upon your countenance, none of the unclean demons will be able to stand near you, seeing the sword by which it received its wound, seeing the blade by which it took its mortal blow.
55:159
For if we, seeing the places where the condemned are beheaded, shudder, consider what the devil shall suffer, seeing the weapon by which Christ dissolved all his power, and cut off the head of the dragon.
55:160
Do not, therefore, be ashamed of so great a good, lest Christ be ashamed of you, when He comes with His glory, and the sign appears before Him, shining brighter than the very ray of the sun.
55:161
For indeed the cross comes then, uttering a voice through its very appearance, and making its defence before the whole world on behalf of the Master, and showing that nothing was left undone of what pertained to Him.
55:162
這記號,無論在我們列祖的日子,或是如今,都曾開啟那緊閉的門;
This sign, both in the days of our forefathers and now, has opened doors that were shut;
55:163
這曾撲滅致命的毒藥;
This has quenched deadly drugs;
55:164
這曾解除毒芹的效力;
this has dissolved the power of hemlock;
55:165
this has healed the bites of venomous beasts.
55:166
For if it has opened the gates of hell, and thrown wide the vaults of heaven, and made new the entrance into paradise, and severed the sinews of the devil,
55:167
what wonder is it if it has overcome deadly drugs, and wild beasts, and other such things? V.
55:168
This, then, engrave upon your mind, and embrace the salvation of our souls.
55:169
For this cross saved and converted the whole inhabited world, drove out error, brought back the truth, made earth into heaven, and wrought men into angels.
55:170
因著這十字架,眾鬼魔不再可怕,反倒可鄙;
Because of this the demons are no longer fearful, but contemptible;
55:171
死亡也不再是死亡,乃是睡眠;
nor is death death, but sleep;
55:172
because of this all the things that war against us are cast down to the ground and trampled under foot.
55:173
If, then, anyone says to you, 'Do you worship the Crucified One?', answer with a bright voice and a joyful countenance:
55:174
'I worship, and I shall never cease to worship.'
55:175
And if he laughs, weep for him, because he is mad.
55:176
Give thanks to the Master, that He has bestowed on us such benefits as no one can even learn apart from revelation from above.
55:177
For it is on this account that this man too laughs, because 'the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit.'
55:178
就連小孩子也是如此,每逢看見某樣偉大而奇妙之事的時候;
Since even little children experience this, whenever they see something great and wonderful;
55:179
and if you bring a child into the mysteries, he will laugh.
55:180
實在說來,那些希臘人正像這些小孩子;
Indeed, the Greeks resemble these little children;
55:181
更確切地說,他們比這些孩子更不成熟,因此也更為可憐,因為他們不是在幼稚的年紀,而是在成熟的年齡,卻仍有嬰孩的心態;
or rather, they are even more imperfect than these, and therefore more wretched, because it is not at an immature age, but in full maturity, that they suffer the affections of infants;
55:182
wherefore they are not even worthy of pardon.
55:183
But let us, with a resplendent voice, crying out great and lofty things, shout aloud and say—and that, when all the Greeks are present, with all the greater boldness—that 'The cross is our boast, and the sum of all good things, and our confidence and our whole crown.'
55:184
我也巴不得能與保羅同說:「藉著它,世界對我已經釘了十字架,我對世界也是如此」;
I could wish to be able to say with Paul also, that 'Through it the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world';
55:185
but I am not able, being held fast by manifold passions.
55:186
Therefore I exhort both you, and before you myself, to be crucified to the world, and to have nothing in common with the earth, but to love the fatherland above, and the glory and the good things that are there.
55:187
For we are soldiers of the heavenly King, and we have put on spiritual armor.
55:188
Why, then, do we lead the life of peddlers and mountebanks, or rather of worms? For where the King is, there also must the soldier be.
55:189
For indeed we have become soldiers, not of those who are afar off, but of those who are near.
55:190
地上的君王必不容許眾人都在王宮之內,也不容許都在他自己的身旁;
For the king who is upon the earth would not endure that all should be in the palace, nor at his own side;
55:191
but the King of the heavens wishes all to be near the royal throne.
55:192
'And how is it possible,' one may say, 'for those who are here to stand beside that throne?' Because Paul too, while upon the earth, was where the Seraphim were, where the Cherubim were, and nearer to Christ than these shield-bearers of the king.
55:193
因為那些衛士的目光四處張望;
For these turn their eyes about in many directions;
55:194
but nothing distracted him with fancies, nor drew him aside, but he kept his whole mind stretched toward the King.
55:195
So that, if we are willing, this is possible for us too.
55:196
因為祂若在空間上與我們相隔,你困惑也算合理;
For if He were separated by place, you might well be perplexed;
55:197
but if He is everywhere present, then to the one who is earnest and intent He is near.
55:198
For this reason also the Prophet said:
55:199
「我雖行過死蔭的幽谷,也不怕遭害,因為你與我同在」;
'I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me';
55:200
'I am a God who is near, and not a God afar off.'
55:201
因此,正如我們的罪使我們與祂隔絕,照樣,我們的義行也使我們與祂親近;
As therefore our sins separate us from Him, so also our acts of righteousness bring us near to Him;
55:202
'For while you are still speaking,' He says, 'I will say, Behold, I am here.'
55:203
哪一個父親會這樣地應允自己的兒女呢?哪一個母親如此預備妥當、又持續地守候著,唯恐她的孩子隨時呼喚她呢?沒有一個人是這樣的,父親沒有,母親也沒有;
What father would ever heed his children in such a way? What mother is so ready and stands continually at hand, lest at some time her little ones should call her? There is no one, neither father nor mother;
55:204
but God stands continually, waiting to see if any of His household servants should at some time call upon Him; and never, when we have called as we ought, has He turned a deaf ear.
55:205
'I do not wait for you to finish,' He says, 'but I answer at once.'
55:206
Let us then call upon Him in the way He wishes to be called upon.
55:207
And how does He wish it? 'Loose,' He says, 'every bond of iniquity, undo the knots of oppressive dealings, tear apart every unjust bond.'
55:208
'Break your bread for the hungry;'
55:209
'and bring the homeless poor into your house.'
55:210
'If you see the naked, clothe him, and do not overlook those of your own flesh and blood.'
55:211
'Then shall your light break forth as the morning, and your healing shall speedily spring up; and your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of God shall enfold you.'
55:212
'Then you shall call, and I will hearken to you;'
55:213
'while you are still speaking, I will say, Behold, I am here.'
55:214
'And who,' one asks, 'is able to do all these things?'
55:215
But who is not able? Tell me.
55:216
在所說的這些事當中,有哪一件是艱難的呢?有哪一件是費力的呢?有哪一件不是容易的呢?這些事不但是可行的,而且是容易的,以致許多人甚至遠遠超過了所吩咐的分量,不僅撕毀了不義的契約,更是把自己一切所有的全都捨棄了;
For which of the things spoken of is hard? Which is laborious? Which is not easy? For so far are they not only possible but also easy, that many have even far surpassed the measure of what was commanded, not merely tearing up unjust contracts but even stripping themselves of all their possessions;
55:217
他們接待窮人,不僅是以屋簷和飯桌相待,更是以身體的汗水、以親身勞苦來服事他們;
receiving the poor not merely under their roof and at their table, but even by the sweat of their body and by toiling for them;
55:218
doing good not only to their kinsfolk but even to their enemies.
55:219
總而言之,在所吩咐的事裡究竟有什麼難處呢?因為祂並沒有說:你要翻越高山、渡過大海、掘開這麼多這麼多畝地、要一直禁食、要披上麻衣;
But what, in a word, is difficult among the things commanded? For He did not say, Cross over the mountain, pass through the sea, dig up so many and so many acres of land, remain without food, gird yourself with sackcloth;
55:220
but rather, Share with your own household, share your bread, tear up the contracts unjustly drawn up.
55:221
What could be easier than these things? Tell me.
55:222
But if you still think them difficult, consider with me also the prizes, and they will become easy for you.
55:223
For just as kings, at the horse-races, set out before the competitors crowns and prizes and garments, so also Christ sets the prizes in the midst of the stadium, holding them out, as it were, through the many hands of the Prophet's words.
55:224
那些君王,即使貴為萬王之王,畢竟仍是人,擁有的財富會耗盡,慷慨的恩賞也會用完,所以他們極力想把微小的顯為盛大;
And the kings, even were they kings ten thousand times over, since they are but men, and possess wealth that gets spent and munificence that gets used up, are ambitious to make what is little appear great;
55:225
wherefore also, entrusting each single prize to each of their attendants, they in this way bring them out into the midst.
55:226
然而,我們的君王卻是恰恰相反;
But our King does the very opposite;
55:227
having heaped all things together at once, since He is exceedingly rich and does nothing for mere display, He thus sets forth in the midst gifts which, when extended, will prove to be boundless and will need many hands to hold them.
55:228
And that you may learn this, examine each of them with all exactness.
55:229
'Then,' He says, 'shall your light break forth as the morning.'
55:230
這恩賜在你看來,豈不像是單單一項嗎?其實它並非只是一項;
Does this gift not seem to you to be some single thing? But it is not one;
55:231
for indeed it holds many things within it: prizes, and crowns, and other rewards.
55:232
你們若願意,就讓我們把它展開,把其中一切的豐富都顯明出來,盡我們所能顯明的;
And if you are willing, let us unfold it and display all the wealth, so far as it is possible for us to display it;
55:233
因為祂並沒有說「它必顯現」,乃是說「它必迸發出來」;
for neither did He say, 'It shall appear,' but, 'It shall break forth;'
55:234
藉此向我們顯明它的迅速與豐盛,以及祂如何懇切地渴慕我們的救恩,如何像產婦臨盆般迫切地要使那些美善之物親自湧現出來,又如何急切催促,以致沒有任何事物能攔阻那難以言喻的奔湧;
thereby showing us its swiftness and abundance, and how earnestly He longs for our salvation, and how He travails, as in birth-pangs, that those good things themselves should come forth, and how He hastens, and how nothing shall hinder that unspeakable rush;
55:235
through all of which He points out their lavishness and the boundlessness of the abundance.
55:236
And what is meant by 'as the morning'? That is: not after you have come into trials, nor after the onset of evils, but He even anticipates them.
55:237
For just as in the case of fruits we call that which appears before its season 'early,' so also here, again indicating the swiftness, He spoke thus:
55:238
'While you are still speaking, I will say, Behold, I am here.'
55:239
But of what kind of light does He speak? And what ever is this light? Not this perceptible light, but another far better, which shows us heaven, the angels, the archangels, the Cherubim, the Seraphim, the thrones, the dominions, the principalities, the powers, the whole army, the royal courts, the tabernacles.
55:240
因為你若配得那光,就必也得見這些景象,並要脫離地獄,脫離那毒害人的蟲,脫離切齒的哀哭,脫離那無法解開的捆鎖,脫離那困苦,脫離那患難,脫離那毫無光亮的黑暗,脫離被腰斬的刑罰,脫離那火河,脫離那咒詛,脫離那痛苦之地;
For if you are counted worthy of that light, you shall also see these things, and shall be delivered from Gehenna, and from the venomous worm, and from the gnashing of teeth, and from the bonds that cannot be loosed, and from the anguish, and from the tribulation, and from the lightless darkness, and from being cut asunder, and from the river of fire, and from the curse, and from the regions of torment;
55:241
並要往那痛苦與憂愁都已逃遁的地方去;
and you shall depart to where pain and sorrow have fled away;
55:242
where there is abundant joy, and peace, and love, and delight, and gladness.
55:243
在那裡有永恆的生命,有難以言表的榮耀,有無法形容的美麗;
There is life eternal, and glory unspeakable, and beauty beyond all telling;
55:244
在那裡有永恆的帳幕,有那位君王不可言喻的榮耀,還有那些美善之物,就是眼睛未曾看見、耳朵未曾聽見、人心也未曾想到的;
there are the eternal tabernacles, and the ineffable glory of the King, and those good things which eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man;
55:245
在那裡有屬靈的洞房,有諸天的婚筵之廳,有那些手持明亮燈盞的童女,也有那些穿著婚筵禮服的人;
there is the spiritual bridal-chamber, and the marriage-halls of the heavens, and the virgins who hold their bright lamps, and those who possess the wedding garment;
55:246
there are the many possessions of the Master, and the royal treasuries.
55:247
Hast thou seen how great are the prizes, and how much He set forth in a single saying, and how He gathered all things together? So too, if we unfold each of the sayings that follow, we shall find great abundance, and a boundless sea.
55:248
那麼,請告訴我,我們還要一再拖延,還要遲遲不肯憐憫那些窮乏的人嗎?我懇求你們,切莫如此;乃是縱然必須捨棄一切,縱然必須被投入火中,縱然必須挺身面對刀劍,縱然必須撲向利刃,縱然必須忍受任何苦楚,我們都要甘心樂意地承受這一切,好叫我們得著天國的禮服,並那不可言喻的榮耀;
Shall we then still put it off, tell me, and shrink from showing mercy to those in need? Nay, I beseech you; but though we must cast away all things, though we must be flung into fire, though we must brave the sword, though we must leap upon knives, though we must suffer whatsoever it be, let us bear all things gladly, that we may attain the garment of the kingdom of heaven, and the glory unspeakable;
55:249
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and dominion unto the ages of ages. Amen.
