「當人子在祂父的榮耀裡,同著眾聖天使降臨的時候,」祂說,「那時祂要坐在祂榮耀的寶座上,把綿羊從山羊中分別出來」;
'But when the Son of Man shall come in the glory of His Father, and all the holy angels with Him, then,' He says, 'shall He sit upon the throne of His glory, and shall separate the sheep from the goats';
80:2
祂要悅納他們,因為祂餓了,他們給祂喫;渴了,他們給祂喝;祂作客旅,他們留祂住;祂赤身露體,他們給祂穿;祂病了,他們看顧祂;祂在監裡,他們來看祂;
He will approve them, because when He was hungry they fed Him, and thirsty they gave Him drink, and being a stranger they took Him in, and being naked they clothed Him, and being sick they visited Him, and being in prison they came to see Him;
80:3
and He will give the kingdom to them.
80:4
But those on the opposite side He will accuse, and will send them into the eternal fire, which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.
80:5
讓我們如今以萬般的殷勤與痛悔之心,來聆聽這極其甘美的一段話,就是我們不斷反覆思想、從不歇止的一段,也是這篇講論最末所終結之處;
Let us now listen, with all diligence and compunction, to this most delightful passage, which we do not cease to turn over continually, and with which the discourse concluded as its very last;
80:6
for the discourse concerning love toward mankind and mercy which He gave is abundant.
80:7
因此在前面各處,祂已用種種方式論及此事,而在這裡最終則說得更為清楚、更為有力,所擺出的並非兩個人、三個人,也非五個人,乃是全人類的世界;
Wherefore also in the foregoing passages He discoursed of this in various ways, and here at length somewhat more plainly and more forcibly, setting forth not two persons and three, nor five, but the whole inhabited world;
80:8
although indeed even the earlier ones, those set forth by means of the two persons, did not signify two persons, but two parts, the one of those who disobey, the other of those who obey.
80:9
But here He handles the discourse in a yet more awe-inspiring and more resplendent manner.
80:10
Wherefore He does not even say, 'The kingdom was likened,'
80:11
any longer, but reveals Himself openly, saying:
80:12
'But when the Son of Man shall come in His glory.'
80:13
因為如今祂是在羞辱中來的,如今是在凌辱與譭謗之中;
For now He has come in dishonor, now amid insults and reproaches;
80:14
but then He shall sit upon the throne of His glory.
80:15
And He makes continual mention of glory.
80:16
For since the cross was near, a thing that seemed to be a reproach, on this account He lifts up the hearer, and brings the tribunal before his eyes, and sets the whole inhabited world around it.
80:17
And it is not by this alone that He makes the saying fearful, but also by showing that the heavens shall be emptied.
80:18
For all the angels shall be present with Him, He says, and they themselves shall bear witness to all the things they ministered when they were sent by the Master for the salvation of men.
80:19
And on every side that day shall then be one to make men shudder.
80:20
Then, He says, all the nations shall be gathered together—that is, the whole nature of mankind.
80:21
And He shall separate them one from another, just as the shepherd separates the sheep.
80:22
因為如今他們尚未被分開,乃是眾人混雜在一起;
For at present they are not separated, but all are mingled together;
80:23
but the division shall then be made with all exactness.
80:24
祂首先藉著他們的站位把他們分開,使他們顯明出來;
And first, by their standing He separates them and makes them manifest;
80:25
接著又藉著名稱指明各人的品性,稱這一等為山羊羔,稱那一等為綿羊,好顯明前者的不結果子;
then also by the names He indicates the character of each, calling the one sort kids and the other sheep, that He may show the unfruitfulness of the one;
80:26
因為從山羊羔絕不能結出甚麼果子;
for no fruit could ever come from kids;
80:27
而後者卻有豐盛的出產;
and the abundant profit of the other;
80:28
for great indeed is the profit of the sheep—from the wool, from the milk, and from their offspring—of all of which the kid is destitute.
80:29
然而那些無知的牲畜,其不結果子或結果子乃是出於本性;
But the brute beasts have their unfruitfulness and their fruitfulness from nature;
80:30
但那些人卻是出於自己的抉擇;
but those men have it from their own choice;
80:31
wherefore the one sort are punished, and these others are crowned.
80:32
祂也不在與他們爭辯審理之前就懲罰他們;
And He does not punish them before He has entered into judgment with them;
80:33
wherefore, having set them before Him, He states the charges.
80:34
他們雖以謙和的態度應答,卻於他們再無益處了;
And they answer with meekness, yet it is of no further avail to them;
80:35
and that with good reason, because they had passed by a thing so easily to be accomplished.
80:36
因為連眾先知也上下反覆地說:「我喜愛憐恤,不喜愛祭祀」;
For indeed the prophets also, up and down, kept saying this: 'I will have mercy, and not sacrifice';
80:37
立法者也藉著一切、藉著言語、又藉著作為,引導他們趨向這事;
and the Lawgiver by all means led them on to this, both by words and by deeds;
80:38
and nature itself taught this.
80:39
But consider how they were destitute, not of one or two only, but of all these things.
80:40
因為他們不僅沒有給飢餓的人吃,沒有給赤身的人穿;
For not only did they fail to feed the hungry, nor to clothe the naked;
80:41
but not even that which was easier—they did not so much as visit the sick.
80:42
And consider how light are the things He enjoins.
80:43
祂並沒有說:「我在監裡,你們釋放了我」;
He did not say, 'I was in prison, and ye set me free';
80:44
「我病了,你們使我起來」;
'I was sick, and ye raised me up';
80:45
but, 'Ye visited me,' and, 'Ye came unto me.'
80:46
And not even in the matter of hunger was the thing commanded burdensome.
80:47
For He sought not a costly table, but only what was needful and the necessary nourishment; and He sought it in the guise of a suppliant.
80:48
So that all these things were enough to punish them:
80:49
那所求之事的容易,因為所求的不過是一塊餅;
the easiness of the request, for it was bread;
80:50
那求者的可憐,因為他是貧窮的;
the pitiableness of him who asked, for he was poor;
80:51
本性所當有的同情,因為他是個人;
the sympathy owed by nature, for he was a man;
80:52
那應許的可羨慕,因為祂所應許的乃是國度;
the desirableness of the promise, for He promised a kingdom;
80:53
那懲罰的可畏,因為祂所警告的乃是地獄;
the fearfulness of the punishment, for He threatened hell;
80:54
那位接受者的尊貴,因為藉著貧窮人接受的乃是神;
the dignity of Him who receives, for it was God who received through the poor;
80:55
那尊榮的超絕,因為祂竟俯就至此,屈尊到這般地步;
the surpassing greatness of the honour, that He vouchsafed to descend so far;
80:56
the justice of the requital, for He received from what was His own.
80:57
But against all these considerations the love of money has utterly maimed those it has taken captive, and this though so great a threat is set before them.
80:58
For above also He says that those who do not receive such men shall suffer more grievous things than Sodom.
80:59
Inasmuch as you did it not to one of the least of these My brethren, neither did you do it to Me.
80:60
你說什麼?他們是你的弟兄;
What do you say? They are Your brethren;
80:61
and how then do You call them least? For this very reason are they brethren, because they are lowly, because they are poor, because they are outcast.
80:62
因為祂特別是把這樣的人召入弟兄之列,就是那些默默無聞的、被人輕看的;
For it is such men above all whom He calls into brotherhood, the unknown, the despised;
80:63
祂所指的不僅是那些修道的人,以及那些退隱山中的人,而是指每一個信徒;
not meaning these monks only, and those who have taken to the mountains, but every believer;
80:64
even though he be a man engaged in worldly affairs, yet if he be hungry and famished, and naked, and a stranger, He wills that he should enjoy all this care.
80:65
For baptism makes a man a brother, and so does the communion of the divine mysteries.
80:66
Then, that you may see from another side also the justice of the sentence, He first praises those who have done well, and says:
80:67
Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
80:68
For I was hungry, and you gave Me to eat.
80:69
因為免得他們說「我們沒有能力」,祂就藉著他們的同伴僕人定他們的罪;
For lest they should say, We had not the means, He condemns them out of the mouth of their fellow-servants;
80:70
just as the virgins by the virgins, and the servant who was drunken and gluttonous by the faithful servant, and the man who buried his talent by those who brought the two, and each of those who transgressed by those who did well.
80:71
這種比較有時是在同等的人之間進行的,如這裡以及童女的情形;
And this comparison is sometimes made between equals, as here and in the case of the virgins;
80:72
但有時卻是從更大的一方,如祂說:「尼尼微人要起來,定這世代的罪,因為他們信了約拿所傳的道;
but sometimes from the greater, as when He says, The men of Nineveh shall rise up and shall condemn this generation, because they believed the preaching of Jonah;
80:73
and behold, a greater than Jonah is here.
80:74
又說:「南方的女王要定這世代的罪,因為她來要聽所羅門的智慧;
And, The queen of the south shall condemn this generation, because she came to hear the wisdom of Solomon;
80:75
and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
80:76
And again from equals, that They shall be your judges.
80:77
又是從更大的一方而言;
And again from the greater;
80:78
「豈不知我們要審判天使嗎?何況今生的事呢?」在這裡也是從同等的一方而言;
Know you not that we shall judge angels? How much more things that pertain to this life? And here too from equals;
80:79
for He sets the rich beside the rich, and the poor beside the poor.
80:80
祂顯明這判決是公義地宣告出來的,不僅是因為那些處在相同境況中的同伴僕人行了善,更是因為他們連在那些貧窮絲毫不能作為攔阻的事上,也沒有順從;
And He shows the verdict to be justly pronounced, not only by this, that their fellow-servants in the same circumstances did well, but also by this, that they did not obey even in those matters in which poverty was no hindrance;
80:81
as, in giving drink to the thirsty, in visiting the prisoner, in looking upon the sick.
80:82
And having praised those who did well, He shows how great was His love toward them from the beginning.
80:83
For Come, He says, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
80:84
How many good things is this name worth, to be blessed, and blessed of the Father? And whence were they counted worthy of so great honor? What is the cause? I was hungry, and you gave Me to eat.
80:85
I was thirsty, and you gave Me to drink, and so forth.
80:86
Of how great honor, of how great blessedness are these words! And He said not, Take, but, Inherit, as one's own, as a father's, as yours, as due to you from the beginning.
80:87
For before you came into being, He says, these things were prepared and made ready for you, since I knew you would be such as this.
80:88
And in return for what do they receive such great things? In return for shelter, for a garment, for bread, for cold water, for a visit, for going in to the prison.
80:89
因為這確實處處都是出於需要的事;
For indeed it is in every case a matter of need;
80:90
yet there is a case also where it is not even a matter of need.
80:91
For surely, as I said, the sick man and the prisoner do not seek this alone, but the one to be released, the other to be delivered from his sickness.
80:92
但祂既是溫柔的,只要求那在我們能力範圍之內的事;
But He, being gentle, requires only what is within our power;
80:93
or rather, even less than what is within our power, leaving it to us to be generous with more of our own free will.
80:94
But to those others He says, Depart from Me, you cursed ones;
80:95
因為咒詛他們的並不是祂,乃是他們自己的行為;
for it was not He who cursed them, but their own works;
80:96
into the eternal fire, prepared—not for you.
80:97
but for the devil and his angels.
80:98
因為當祂論到那國度時,說:「來承受這國度」,隨即補上:「這是創世以前為你們所預備的」;
For when He spoke concerning the kingdom, saying, 'Come, inherit the kingdom,' He added, 'which was prepared for you before the foundation of the world';
80:99
but concerning the fire, He no longer speaks thus, but says, 'which was prepared for the devil.'
80:100
因為這彷彿是說:「我固然為你們預備了國度,但那火卻不再是為你們,而是為魔鬼和牠的使者;
For it is as though He said: 'I indeed prepared the kingdom for you, but the fire no longer for you, but for the devil and his angels;
80:101
but since you cast yourselves into it, blame yourselves.'
80:102
And not by this alone, but also through what follows, as though making a defense to them, He sets forth the causes as well.
80:103
'For I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat.'
80:104
For even if the one who approached had been an enemy, were not his sufferings enough to break down and bend even the merciless man—hunger, and frost, and bonds, and nakedness, and sickness, and wandering everywhere under the open sky? For these things are sufficient to dissolve even enmity.
80:105
But you did not do these things even for a friend—and for One who was a friend, and a benefactor, and Master.
80:106
若我們看見一隻狗飢餓,往往就動了憐憫;
And if we see a dog hungry, we are often moved to pity;
80:107
若我們看見一頭野獸,也會生出惻隱之心;
and if we behold a wild beast, we are moved with compassion;
80:108
然而當你看見你的主宰時,卻不動心嗎?這其中哪裡有值得辯解的餘地呢?因為即使只有這一件事,難道還不足以作為回報嗎?我且不說在普天下之中,從那坐在父神寶座上的主口中聽見這樣的聲音,並且承受一個國度;單單這行為本身,難道還不足以作為賞賜嗎?如今在普世面前,那難以言喻的榮耀顯現之時,祂高聲宣揚你、為你加冠,並承認你是那供養祂、款待祂的人;
yet when you see your Master, are you not moved? And where in this is there anything worthy of excuse? For if this alone had been the case, would it not have been enough for a recompense? I do not speak of hearing such a voice throughout the whole world from Him who sits upon the Father's throne, and of obtaining a kingdom, but the very act itself—was it not enough for a reward? Yet now, with the whole world present, and that ineffable glory shining forth, He proclaims you aloud and crowns you, and confesses you to be the one who fed Him and gave Him lodging;
80:109
and He is not ashamed to say such things, that He may make your crown more glorious.
80:110
For this reason, then, both these are justly punished, and those are crowned according to grace.
80:111
For even if they should have done ten thousand things, the munificence is of grace—that in return for things so small and so trifling, so great a heaven and a kingdom and so high an honor should be given them.
80:112
'And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said to His disciples:'
80:113
'You know that after two days the Passover comes, and the Son of Man is delivered up to be crucified.'
80:114
祂在提醒他們那國度、那裡的賞報以及那永不止息的懲罰之後,便適時地再論到自己的受難;
Again He speaks seasonably concerning His Passion, when He had reminded them of the kingdom, and of the recompense there, and of the immortal punishment;
80:115
'Why are you afraid at these temporary terrors, when such good things await you?' 3.
80:116
But consider for me how He handled in a newer way, and overshadowed in all that went before, the very thing that grieved them most.
80:117
因為祂沒有說:「你們知道,過兩天我要被交出去」;
For He did not say, 'You know that after two days I am delivered up';
80:118
而是說什麼呢?「你們知道,過兩天是逾越節」;
but what? 'You know that after two days the Passover comes';
80:119
然後祂才補上:祂被交出去釘十字架;
and then He added that He is delivered up to be crucified;
80:120
showing that what was taking place was a mystery, and a feast and a solemn assembly celebrated for the salvation of the world, and that He suffered while foreknowing all things.
80:121
正因如此,既然這已足以安慰他們,祂此時甚至沒有向他們提及復活的事;
For this reason, then, as this was sufficient for their consolation, He did not even say anything to them now concerning the resurrection;
80:122
for it was superfluous, having discoursed so much concerning it, to speak of it again.
80:123
And in another way too, as I said, He shows that His very suffering was a deliverance from ten thousand evils, by reminding them, through the Passover, of the ancient benefits in Egypt.
80:124
'Then the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and they took counsel together that they might seize Jesus by guile and kill Him.'
80:125
'But they said, Not during the feast, lest a tumult arise among the people.'
80:126
Did you see the unspeakable corruption of the Jewish affairs? Setting their hand to lawless deeds, they come to the high priest, wishing to receive authority from that source whence they ought to have been restrained.
80:127
究竟有多少位祭司長呢?因為律法本是要只有一位;
And how many chief priests were there? For the law wills that there be but one;
80:128
whence it is plain that the Jewish institutions were beginning to be dissolved.
80:129
For Moses, as I said, commanded that there be one, and that when he died another should then come to be; and by the lifetime of this one he measured the banishment of those who had committed manslaughter unintentionally.
80:130
How then were there many chief priests at that time? They came to be yearly appointees in later times. And the evangelist made this plain, when he discoursed concerning Zacharias, saying that he was of the course of Abia.
80:131
Therefore here he calls chief priests those who were of the priestly families.
80:132
他們是要暗中拿住祂呢,還是要除掉祂呢?兩者都是;
Was it that they might seize Him secretly, or that they might do away with Him? Both;
80:133
for they feared the people.
80:134
因此他們也等候節期過去;
Wherefore also they waited for the feast to pass;
80:135
for they said, 'Not during the feast.'
80:136
至於魔鬼,牠為了不使這受難之事顯明出來,並不願它在逾越節發生;
For the devil, indeed, in order that he might not make the Passion manifest, did not wish it to be at the Passover;
80:137
But they acted thus that no uproar might arise.
80:138
所以請看他們所懼怕的,並不是神的事,也不是唯恐這節期為他們招來更大的玷污;
Observe, then, how they feared, not the things of God, nor lest a greater defilement should come upon them from the season;
80:139
but everywhere it was human considerations that concerned them.
80:140
Yet nevertheless, boiling with wrath, they again changed their purpose.
80:141
For having said, 'Not on the feast,' when they found the betrayer, they no longer had patience for the season, but slaughtered Him during the very feast itself.
80:142
And why did they seize Him at that time? Both because, as I said, they were boiling with wrath, and because they expected to find Him then, and they did everything as though they were maimed and blinded.
80:143
For even though He most fully used their wickedness for His own dispensation, yet not on this account were they free from blame; rather they were worthy of ten thousand punishments because of their intent.
80:144
At any rate, when all men, even the guilty, ought to have been released, then these men slew the innocent One, who had done them ten thousand good deeds, and who for their sakes had for a time overlooked the Gentiles.
80:145
But, oh, the loving-kindness!
80:146
Those so depraved, those [so perverse and] laden with ten thousand evils, He again saves, and sends the apostles to be slain on their behalf, and through them He offers a supplication.
80:147
'For we are ambassadors on Christ's behalf.'
80:148
既有這樣的榜樣,我並不是說:讓我們為仇敵而死;
Having, then, such examples, I do not say, Let us die for our enemies;
80:149
for this too were fitting, but since we are weaker, I say this much for now:
80:150
Let us at least not bear ill-will toward our friends, nor envy those who do us good.
80:151
我暫且不說:讓我們善待那惡待我們的人;
I do not say for now, Let us do good to those who treat us ill;
80:152
for indeed I desire this too, but since you are grosser of understanding, I say, at least do not take revenge.
80:153
難道我們的信仰不過是一齣戲、是虛偽的假面嗎?你們究竟為何與這些事實截然相背而立呢?那些事並非徒然記載下來的,無論是其他的事,還是祂在十字架上所成就的一切,都足以把他們召回;
Is our life then some stage-play and pretense? Why in the world do you set yourselves diametrically opposed to the facts? For it was not written idly, both the other things and all that He wrought at the very cross, things able to call them back;
80:154
but they were written that you might imitate His goodness, that you might emulate His loving-kindness.
80:155
因為祂既把他們仰面摔倒在地,又醫好了那僕人的耳朵,並且以溫和的言語與他們對話;
For indeed He both cast them backward to the ground, and restored the ear of the servant, and spoke with gentleness;
80:156
and while on high He displayed great wonders, turning back the sun's rays, rending the rocks, raising the dead, terrifying the wife of the judge through dreams, in the very trial displaying all meekness, which was no less able than miracles to draw them to Him, foretelling ten thousand things in the judgment hall, and upon the very cross crying out, 'Father, forgive them this sin.'
80:157
And when He was buried, how many things did He display toward their salvation? And when He rose, did He not straightway call the Jews? Did He not grant remission of sins? Did He not set before them ten thousand good things? What is more marvelous than this? Those who crucified Him and breathed slaughter, after they had crucified Him became sons of God.
80:158
What is equal to this tender care? When we hear these things, let us cover our faces for shame, that we stand so far removed from Him whom we are commanded to imitate.
80:159
我們至少該看看這相距有多遠,好叫我們至少能定自己的罪,因為我們竟與那些基督為之捨命的人為敵;
Let us at least see how great the distance is, that we may at least condemn ourselves, warring as we do against those for whom Christ gave His soul;
80:160
and we are unwilling to be reconciled to those whom, in order to reconcile them, He refused not even to be slaughtered.
80:161
Unless indeed this too is some expenditure and outlay of money, which you put forward as an excuse in the matter of almsgiving.
80:162
Consider for how many things you are accountable, and not only will you not draw back from forgiving those who have wronged you, but you will even run to those who have grieved you, that it may become for you an occasion of pardon, that you may find consolation for your own evils.
80:163
那些希臘人的子弟,並不指望甚麼大的賞賜,卻在這些事上屢屢表現出高尚的德行;
The children of the Greeks, expecting no great reward, often played the philosopher in these matters;
80:164
and will you, who are about to journey forth upon such hopes, draw back and hesitate? And that which time accomplishes, this you will not endure to do before its time for the sake of God's law, but would rather have your passion quenched without reward than for a reward? For neither, if this come to pass through lapse of time, will there be any advantage to you, but rather great punishment, because that which time wrought, this the law of God did not persuade you to do.
80:165
But if you say that you burn with indignation at the remembrance of the insult, call to mind whether any good has come to you from the one who grieved you, and how many evils you yourself have done to others.
80:166
Reckon that you too have spoken against others.
80:167
How then will you obtain the pardon which you do not impart to others? But you have spoken against no one? Yet you have heard others speaking, and you accepted it.
80:168
你想知道不記仇是何等的美善,並且這事最能使神喜悅嗎?那些對於被神公義刑罰之人幸災樂禍的,神必懲治他們;
Do you wish to learn how great a good it is not to remember wrongs, and how this above all things gladdens God? Those who rejoice over such as are justly punished by Him, He chastises;
80:169
and although they are justly punished, yet it did not behoove you to exult over them.
80:170
And the prophet, after bringing many charges, added this also, saying:
80:171
'They were not grieved at all over the ruin of Joseph;'
80:172
'She that dwelt in Enan came not forth to mourn for the house that was near her.'
80:173
然而約瑟,就是從他而出的眾支派,以及他們的鄰舍,乃是照著神的旨意受刑罰的;
And yet Joseph also, that is, the tribes descended from him, and their neighbors, were being punished according to God's purpose;
80:174
but nevertheless He wills that we should share in the pain even for these.
80:175
因為我們既是邪惡的人,當我們懲罰一個僕人,若看見哪個同作僕人的在旁譏笑,尚且更加惱怒,把怒氣轉移到那人身上;
For if we, being evil, when we punish a servant, and see any of the fellow-servants laughing, are the more provoked, and transfer our anger onto that one;
80:176
how much more will God punish those who rejoice over such as are being chastised.
80:177
But if it is our duty not to trample upon those who are being chastised by God, but rather to grieve together with them, how much more toward those who have sinned against ourselves.
80:178
For this is the mark of love, and this God sets before all things.
80:179
正如在君王的紫袍上,那些貴重的花色與色彩,乃是織成這件錦袍的材料;
For just as in the royal purple, those flowers and colours are the precious ones which make up this mantle,
80:180
so also here, those are the precious virtues which hold love together.
80:181
And nothing so preserves love as not to remember those who have sinned against us.
80:182
For surely God took thought for the other party as well? Surely He did not fail to urge the one who did the wrong toward the one who was wronged? Does He not send him from the altar to that other, and after the reconciliation call him to the table? But do not on this account wait for that other to come, since then you have lost the whole reward.
80:183
正是為此,祂才為你定下難以言喻的賞賜,好叫你搶在那人之先;
For it is on this very account that He appoints for you an unspeakable reward, that you may be beforehand with that other;
80:184
因為你若是被人懇求了才與人和好,那和好便不再是出於神的吩咐,而是出於那人的殷勤;
for if, being entreated, you are reconciled, then the friendship has come to pass no longer from God's command, but from that man's diligence;
80:185
wherefore you depart uncrowned, while that man receives the prizes.
80:186
What do you say? You have an enemy, and are you not ashamed? Is the devil not enough for us, that we should draw upon ourselves those of our own kind as well? Would that not even he had wished to war against us; would that not even he had been a devil!
80:187
Do you not know how great the pleasure is after reconciliation? For what if in the midst of enmity it does not clearly appear? For that it is sweeter to love the one who wrongs you than to hate him, you will then be able to learn well after the enmity has been dissolved.
80:188
Why then do we imitate the madmen, devouring one another, warring against our own flesh? Hear how great was the discourse concerning this even in the Old Testament.
80:189
'The ways of those who bear grudges lead to death.'
80:190
'A man cherishes anger against a man, and does he seek healing from God?'
80:191
祂固然曾准許以眼還眼,以牙還牙;
And yet He permitted an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth;
80:192
how then does He bring a charge? Because He permitted even those things, not that we should do them to one another, but that through fear of suffering we might refrain from daring to do them.
80:193
And besides, those things belong to some temporary anger, but the bearing of grudges belongs to a soul that practises wickedness.
80:194
But you have suffered ill? Yet nothing so great as what you will work upon yourself by bearing a grudge.
80:195
And in another way too, it is not even possible for a good man to suffer any evil.
80:196
假設有一個人,既有兒女又有妻子,並且他持守智慧之道;縱使他也有許多可招致損害的緣由,既有豐盛的財富,又有官位的權勢,並有許多朋友,且享有尊榮,只要他持守智慧之道;
For let there be someone who has both children and a wife, and let him practise the love of wisdom; and let him have also many occasions for harm, both an abundance of wealth, and the power of office, and many friends, and let him enjoy honour, only let him practise the love of wisdom;
80:197
因為這一點是必須加上的;
for this must be added;
80:198
and let us apply to him the blows in argument.
80:199
讓某個奸惡之人前來,使他遭受財物的損失;
And let some knavish man come and surround him with loss;
80:200
但這對那視錢財如糞土的人算得甚麼呢?讓他害死他的兒女;
what then is that to the man who considers riches to be nothing? Let him make away with the children;
80:201
但這對那默想復活之道的人算得甚麼呢?讓他殺害他的妻子;
what then is that to the man who philosophises concerning the resurrection? Let him slaughter the wife;
80:202
但這對那受過教訓、不為已睡了的人哀哭的人算得甚麼呢?讓他把他投入羞辱之中;
and what is that to the man who has been taught not to mourn for those who have fallen asleep? Let him cast him into dishonour;
80:203
但這對那看眼前萬物如同草上之花的人算得甚麼呢?你若願意,甚至讓他刑罰他的身體,把他下在監裡;
what is that to the man who counts present things but as the flower of the grass? If you will, let him even punish the body, and cast it into prison;
80:204
但這對那已學過「我們外面的人雖然毀壞,裡面的人卻一天新似一天」,又學過「患難生忍耐」的人算得甚麼呢?我這一方面已經應許,他絕不至受害;
what then is that to the man who has learned, 'Even though our outward man is decaying, yet the inward man is being renewed,' and that 'Tribulation works patience'? I for my part have promised that he shall in no way be harmed;
80:205
the argument as it proceeded has shown that he is even benefited, being renewed and becoming approved.
80:206
Let us then not be pained on account of others, wronging ourselves and rendering the soul feeble.
80:207
For the smart of our own misery is not so much a matter of our neighbours' wickedness as of it.
80:208
正因如此,倘若有人侮辱我們,我們便哭泣、萎縮退避;
For this cause, even if someone insults us, we weep and shrink together;
80:209
倘若有人搶奪我們,我們也照樣受苦,正如那些小孩子,被同齡中較調皮的孩童激怒——並非為了甚麼要緊的事,只是藉著些微的緣故惹他們煩惱;
and if someone plunders us, we suffer the same, like those little children whom their more mischievous playmates provoke over nothing necessary, but grieving them from small pretexts;
80:210
然而連那些孩童,若見對方被激惱了,就不住地啃咬下去;
but nevertheless even those children, if they see the others being nettled, keep on biting;
80:211
but if they see them laughing, they also desist.
80:212
But we are even more foolish than these, lamenting over the very things at which we ought to laugh.
80:213
Wherefore I exhort you, let us lay aside this childish mind, and lay hold of the heavens.
80:214
For indeed Christ wills that we be men, men that are perfect.
80:215
So also Paul commanded, saying, 'Brethren, do not be children in your minds, but in malice be as babes.'
80:216
Let us then be as babes in malice, and having fled from wickedness, let us lay hold of virtue, that we may also attain the eternal good things, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the might unto the ages of the ages.
