'Then there come to Jesus the scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem, saying:'
52:2
When? When He had wrought His countless signs, when He had healed the sick by the touch of the hem of His garment.
52:3
For it is on this account that the evangelist marks the time, that he may show forth their unspeakable wickedness, which yielded to nothing.
52:4
「從耶路撒冷來的文士和法利賽人」這話是甚麼意思呢?他們原是散佈在各支派之中,分為十二部分;
But what is the meaning of, 'The scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem'? Everywhere they were scattered among the tribes, and were divided into twelve parts;
52:5
but those who possessed the mother city were more wicked than the rest, inasmuch as they both enjoyed greater honour, and had acquired much arrogance.
52:6
But observe with me how even by their very question they are caught.
52:7
For they do not say, 'Why do they transgress the law of Moses?' but, 'the tradition of the elders.'
52:8
From which it is clear that the priests were making many innovations, and this although Moses, with much fear and with much threatening, had strictly charged them neither to add nor to take away.
52:9
'For you shall not add,' he says, 'to the word which I command you this day, neither shall you take away from it.'
52:10
Nevertheless they were innovating none the less; such indeed was this very thing also, namely, that one must not eat with unwashed hands, the washing of cups and of brazen vessels, and their washing of themselves as well.
52:11
For as time went on, so far from being freed from these observances, they then rather bound them with yet more numerous observances, fearing lest any should take away their authority, and wishing to be more formidable, as though they too were lawgivers.
52:12
To such a degree, then, did the matter advance in lawlessness, that their own commandments were kept, while those of God were transgressed.
52:13
And they so prevailed, that the thing came at length to be a matter of accusation.
52:14
Which was a twofold charge against them: both that they were making innovations, and that in this way they were vindicating their own concerns, while making no account of God.
52:15
And passing over the other matters they might have mentioned—the cups and the brazen vessels (for these were ridiculous)—they bring forward into the midst that which seemed to have more reason than the rest, doing so, as it appears to me, with the wish to provoke Him to anger.
52:16
For this reason also they made mention of the elders, that as though He were setting them at nought He might give them a handle against Himself.
52:17
But it is worth while first to inquire why it was that the disciples too ate with unwashen hands.
52:18
那麼他們為何這樣吃飯呢?並非刻意如此,乃是因為他們從此輕看那些多餘的規矩,只留意那些必需的事;
For what reason then did they eat thus? Not that they made a practice of it, but because from now on they despised the superfluous things, and gave heed to those that were necessary;
52:19
having as a law neither the washing nor the not washing, but doing either as it happened to fall out.
52:20
For those who despised even the necessary food itself, how were they likely to hold these things in earnest regard? Since then it often came to pass that this took place of its own accord—as when they were eating in the desert, and as when they were plucking the ears of corn—they put it forward as a matter of accusation, they who ever pass by the great things and make much account of the superfluous.
52:21
What then does Christ do? He did not stand His ground against this, nor did He make His defence, but at once brings a counter-charge, pulling down their boldness, and showing that one who sins in great things ought not to be scrupulous with others about small ones.
52:22
祂說:「你們本當受控告的時候,反倒控告別人麼?」你且留意,每逢祂要廢除律法上的某項規條時,總是以申辯的方式行之;
"For when it were fitting that you should be accused," He says, "do you yet accuse?" But do you observe how, whenever He would abolish any of the legal observances, He does it in the guise of a defence;
52:23
因為祂既不立即論到那越犯,也不說:「這算不得甚麼」;
for neither does He proceed at once to the transgression, nor does He say, "It is nothing;"
52:24
因為若如此,反倒使他們更加放肆;
for so He would have made them the more presumptuous;
52:25
but first He cuts off their audacity, bringing into the midst the far greater charge, and drawing it round upon their own head.
52:26
祂既不說他們越犯律法是行得對的,免得給他們留下把柄;
And He neither says that they do well in transgressing, that He might not give them a handle;
52:27
也不責備所行的事,免得堅立那律法;
nor does He blame what was done, that He might not confirm the law;
52:28
另一方面,祂也不控告先祖為不法而可憎的人;
nor again on the other hand does He accuse the elders as lawless and abominable;
52:29
因為若如此,他們必以祂為毀謗而傲慢的人而轉離祂;
for so they would have turned away from Him as a reviler and an insolent man;
52:30
but letting all these things go, He takes another way.
52:31
祂看似在責備那些前來的人,實則是在攻擊那些定立這些規條的人;
And He seems indeed to be rebuking those who had come to Him, but He lays hold on those who had laid down these ordinances;
52:32
祂處處不提先祖,卻在對這些人的指控中一併打倒了那些人,並指明這罪是雙重的:他們既不順從神,又是為了人的緣故而如此行;
nowhere making mention of the elders, but in His accusation against these He casts down those also, and shows that the sin is twofold: that they neither obey God, and that they do this for the sake of men;
52:33
"For this is what has ruined you, this—your obeying the elders in all things."
52:34
But He does not say so; rather He hints at this very thing, answering them in this way:
52:35
"Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded,"
52:36
"Honour your father and your mother;"
52:37
and, "He that curses father or mother, let him die the death."
52:38
"But whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, whatever you might have been profited by me—and he shall in no wise honour his father and his mother;"
52:39
"and you have made void the commandment of God because of your tradition."
52:40
祂沒有說「先祖的」,卻說「你們的」;
And He said not, "Of the elders," but, "Of you;"
52:41
and, "You say," and He said not, "The elders say," so as to make His discourse less burdensome.
52:42
For since they wished to show the disciples as transgressors of the law, He shows these men themselves doing this, while the disciples are cleared of all charge.
52:43
For that which is enjoined by men is surely not law (wherefore also He calls it a tradition), and by men most lawless at that.
52:44
And since this was not contrary to the law—the commanding to wash the hands—He brings into the midst another tradition, one that is opposed to the law.
52:45
And what He says is of this kind:
52:46
They trained the young, under the guise of piety, to despise their fathers.
52:47
How, and in what manner? If any of the parents said to his child,
52:48
"Give me this sheep that you have, or the calf, or some other such thing," they would say:
52:49
"This, whereby you wish to be profited from me, is a gift to God, and you cannot take it."
52:50
And from this a twofold evil came to pass.
52:51
For neither did they offer it to God, and they deprived their parents under the name of the offering, both dishonouring those who begat them for God's sake, and dishonouring God for the sake of those who begat them.
52:52
But He does not say this at once; rather He first reads out the law, whereby He shows that He greatly desires parents to be honoured.
52:53
For it says, 'Honor your father and your mother, that you may be long-lived upon the earth.'
52:54
And again, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him die the death.'
52:55
But He, passing over the former, that is, the reward laid up for those who honor their parents, sets forth the more fearful thing, I mean the punishment threatened against those who dishonor them, both wishing to strike them with terror and to draw to Himself those who have understanding.
52:56
And He shows from this that they are worthy of death.
52:57
因為那僅僅在言語上不孝敬的尚且受刑罰,何況你們這在行為上如此行的呢;
For if he who dishonors merely in word is punished, much more shall you be who do so in deed;
52:58
and not only dishonoring them yourselves, but also teaching others to do this.
52:59
You then, who do not even deserve to live, how do you bring charges against the disciples? And what wonder is it if you heap such insults upon Me, who am as yet unknown to you, when you are plainly seen doing such things even against the Father? For everywhere He both says and shows that it was from that source that they began this madness.
52:60
但也有些人另作解釋,論到那句話:『我所當供養你的,已經作了供獻』;
But some explain otherwise the phrase, 'A gift, whatever you might have been profited by from me;'
52:61
that is to say, 'I owe you no honor, but I do you a favor if I should indeed honor you.'
52:62
But Christ would not have made mention of such an insult.
52:63
And Mark too makes this plainer, saying:
52:64
『各耳板,就是我所當供養你的,已經作了供獻』;
'Corban, whatever you might have been profited by from me;'
52:65
which is not a gift or a dowry, but is properly called an offering.
52:66
Having shown, then, that those who trample the law under foot would not be justified in accusing others of transgressing a tradition of the elders, He proves this very thing also from the prophet.
52:67
因為祂既已強而有力地抓住了他們,就更進一步;
For since He had taken hold of them vehemently, He advances yet further;
52:68
which indeed He does everywhere, bringing the Scriptures into the midst, and by this means showing Himself to be in accord with God.
52:69
And what does the prophet say? 'This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far removed from Me.'
52:70
'But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'
52:71
你看見這預言與所說的話絲毫不差地相合,而他們的惡在古時就已預先被宣告了嗎?因為基督如今所控告他們的那件事,以賽亞在古時也早已說了,就是他們藐視神的事;
Do you see the prophecy agreeing precisely with the things spoken, and their wickedness proclaimed beforehand from of old? For that very thing which Christ now charged them with, this also Isaiah declared long before, namely, that they despise the things of God;
52:72
祂說:『因為他們敬拜我也是枉然』;
'For in vain do they worship Me,' He says;
52:73
至於他們自己的事,卻十分看重;
but of their own things they make much account;
52:74
'For teaching as commandments the doctrines of men.'
52:75
Not without reason, therefore, do they fail to keep them.
52:76
祂既已給了他們致命的一擊,並且從事實、從他們自己所下的判語、又從先知的話加重了控告,就不再與那些人談論了,因為他們如今已無可挽回,反倒將話轉向眾人,好引進一個崇高偉大、滿有真智慧的教訓;
Having then dealt them a mortal blow, and having heightened the accusation from the facts, from their own verdict, and from the prophet, He converses with those men no further, since they are now beyond correction, but turns His discourse to the multitudes, so as to introduce a doctrine that is lofty and great, and full of much true wisdom;
52:77
and taking occasion from that matter, He weaves in henceforth the greater thing, casting out also the observance concerning foods.
52:78
When He had cleansed the leper, when He had loosed the Sabbath, when He had declared Himself King of land and sea, when He had given laws, when He had forgiven sins, when He had raised the dead, when He had furnished them with many proofs of His Godhead, then does He discourse concerning foods.
52:79
因為整個猶太教其實都繫於此;
For indeed the whole of Judaism is bound up in this;
52:80
and if you take this away, you have taken away the whole.
52:81
For from this He shows that circumcision too must be abolished.
52:82
但祂自己並不率先直接提出這一點,因為割禮比其他誡命更為古老,也享有更大的看重;
But He Himself does not directly bring this in as the main point, since it was older than the other commandments and held in greater esteem;
52:83
but He appoints it as law through the disciples.
52:84
For so great a thing was it, that the disciples too, when after so long a time they wished to abolish it, first handled it gently, and only so did they do away with it.
52:85
But observe how He introduces the law.
52:86
'For having called the multitudes to Him, He said to them:'
52:87
For neither does He simply make His declaration to them, but by the honor and the attention He first makes the word readily acceptable (for this the evangelist indicated when he said
52:88
For after the refutation of those men and the victory over them, and the accusation from the prophet, then does He begin His lawgiving, when they would more readily receive the things spoken.
52:89
And not simply does He call them to Him, but He also makes them more attentive.
52:90
就是說:『你們要明白,要振作起來』;
that is, 'Understand, rouse yourselves;'
52:91
for such is the law that is about to be written.
52:92
因為他們既然為了自己的遺傳,甚至不合時宜地破壞了律法,而你們也聽見了;
For if they themselves broke the law, and out of season too, for the sake of their own tradition, and you have heard it;
52:93
Much more ought you to hearken to me, who at the fitting time am leading you on to a greater and loftier wisdom.
52:94
祂並沒有說:「分辨食物毫無意義」,也沒有說「摩西的吩咐是錯的」,更沒有說「他不過是遷就你們的軟弱」;
And He did not say, 'The observance of meats is nothing,' nor that 'Moses commanded wrongly,' nor that 'he was making concessions to your weakness';
52:95
but in the manner of exhortation and counsel, and taking His witness from the very nature of things, He says:
52:96
'Not that which enters into the mouth defiles the man, but that which comes forth out of the mouth.'
52:97
having recourse to nature itself, laying down a law, and pronouncing His verdict.
52:98
And upon hearing these things they made no reply, nor did they say:
52:99
'What sayest Thou? When God gave countless commandments concerning the observance of meats, dost Thou lay down such laws?' But since He had thoroughly stopped their mouths—not merely by refuting them, but also by bringing their guile into the open, by exposing what was secretly wrought among them, and by uncovering the hidden things of their mind—being put to silence, they departed.
52:100
But consider with me how He does not yet venture openly to make bold with the matter of meats.
52:101
因此祂沒有說「食物」,而是說「不是入口的使人污穢」;
For this reason He did not say, 'Meats,' but, 'Not that which enters in defiles the man';
52:102
which one might reasonably have supposed to be spoken concerning unwashed hands as well.
52:103
For He Himself was indeed speaking about meats, yet it might have been understood as concerning these things too.
52:104
For so great was the observance of meats, that even after the Resurrection Peter said:
52:105
'Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything common or unclean.'
52:106
For even though He said these things for the sake of others, and so as to leave Himself a defense against those who would accuse Him—that He might show that He had indeed objected, and yet even so was not permitted—nevertheless He shows how great was the suspicion attaching to the matter.
52:107
因此祂從起初也沒有明說食物,而是說「入口的東西」;
Wherefore He too from the outset did not speak plainly about meats, but, 'The things which enter into the mouth';
52:108
and again, when afterward He seemed to speak more plainly, He veiled it by means of the conclusion, saying:
52:109
'But to eat with unwashed hands defiles not the man.'
52:110
so that from this it might seem that He had taken His starting point here, and for the time being was discoursing concerning this.
52:111
然而「吃食物並不使人污穢」;
But 'to eat meats defiles not the man';
52:112
yet as though discoursing about the former, that they might have nothing to say in reply.
52:113
'Having heard these things, then,' it says, 'the Pharisees were offended'—not the multitudes.
52:114
'For His disciples,' it says, 'came and said unto Him:'
52:115
'Knowest Thou that the Pharisees, when they heard this saying, were offended?' And yet nothing had been spoken against them.
52:116
What then does Christ do? He did not remove the offense from them, but rebuked them, saying:
52:117
'Every plant which My heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up.'
52:118
For He knows both how to despise offenses, and how not to despise them.
52:119
「但恐怕觸犯他們,你往海裡去釣魚」;
'But lest we should offend them, cast a hook into the sea';
52:120
'they are blind guides of the blind.'
52:121
'And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.'
52:122
Now the disciples said these things, not as grieving for those men alone, but being themselves also quietly troubled.
52:123
But since they did not dare to say this in their own person, they wished to learn it in the guise of an inquiry concerning others.
52:124
For that this is so, hear how afterward the ardent Peter, who was everywhere the first to press forward, came and said:
52:125
'Declare unto us this parable';
52:126
thereby disclosing the tumult in his soul, and not daring openly to say, 'I am offended,' but asking to be delivered from that tumult by means of the interpretation.
52:127
'Every plant which My heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up.'
52:128
那些染上摩尼教謬論的人說,這話是論到律法而說的;
Those who are sick with the doctrines of the Manichaeans say that this was spoken concerning the Law;
52:129
but the things said before stop their mouths.
52:130
For if He were speaking about the Law, how is it that above He defends it and contends on its behalf, saying:
52:131
'Ye transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition'? And how does He bring the prophet forward into the midst? Rather, it is concerning those very men and their traditions that He says these things.
52:132
因為神既然說:「當孝敬父母」;
For if God said, 'Honor thy father and thy mother';
52:133
How is that which was spoken by God not a planting of God? 4.
52:134
And what follows also shows that it was spoken concerning them and concerning their traditions.
52:135
They are blind guides of the blind.
52:136
But if He had been saying this concerning the Law, He would have said,
52:137
A blind guide is he of the blind.
52:138
But He did not speak thus; rather, 'They are blind guides of the blind,' thereby freeing the Law from the accusation, and drawing the whole charge upon these men.
52:139
Then, cutting off from them the multitude also, as being about to fall into the pit because of them, He says:
52:140
If a blind man guide a blind man, both shall fall into a ditch.
52:141
誠然,單是作瞎子已是極大的禍患;
It is indeed a great evil even to be blind;
52:142
but for one who is such not even to have a hand to lead him, and yet to occupy the rank of a guide, is a double and triple charge.
52:143
For if it is perilous that the blind man should not have a guide, much more is it so that he should wish to be one for another also.
52:144
What then does Peter do? He does not say, 'What ever is this which You have said?' but asks as though it were full of obscurity.
52:145
「你為何說這是違法的呢?」因為他懼怕,惟恐被人以為他是被絆倒了;
'Why did You call it unlawful?' For he was afraid, lest he should be thought to have been offended;
52:146
but he says that this was a matter of obscurity.
52:147
然而,這並非含糊不明之事,而是他確實被絆倒了,這是顯而易見的;
But that it was not a matter of obscurity, but that he was being offended, is plain;
52:148
wherefore also He rebukes him, saying:
52:149
「你們到如今還不明白嗎?」因為那些群眾或許連所說的話也不曾領會;
Are you also even yet without understanding? For the multitudes perhaps did not so much as comprehend what was spoken;
52:150
but these were the very ones who had been offended.
52:151
因此起初,他們彷彿是替法利賽人詢問一般,想要弄明白;
Therefore at the outset, as though inquiring on behalf of the Pharisees, they wished to learn;
52:152
but when they heard Him uttering a great threat and saying, that 'Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up,' and, 'They are blind guides of the blind,' they were subdued.
52:153
But he who was everywhere fervent does not even so endure to keep silence, but says:
52:154
Declare unto us this parable.
52:155
What then does Christ do? He answers very reprovingly:
52:156
「你們到如今還不明白嗎?豈不曉得嗎?」祂說這些話並加以斥責,為要驅除他們的成見;
Are you also even yet without understanding? Do you not yet perceive? These things He said and rebuked, so as to cast out their prejudice;
52:157
yet He did not stop at this, but adds further things, saying:
52:158
「凡入口的,是進到肚腹裡,又落到茅廁裡;
That everything which enters into the mouth goes into the belly, and is cast out into the drain;
52:159
but the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart, and those are what defile the man.
52:160
因為從心裡發出來的,有惡念、兇殺、姦淫、苟合、偷盜、謗讟、妄證;
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, blasphemies, false witnessings;
52:161
and these are the things which defile the man.
52:162
But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.
52:163
Do you see how vehemently and reprovingly He has dealt with them? Then He establishes what was said, both from the common nature of things and with a view to their cure.
52:164
For when He says, 'It goes into the belly, and is cast out into the drain,' He is still answering after the manner of Jewish lowliness.
52:165
For He says that it does not remain, but passes out.
52:166
And yet, even if it did remain, it would not make one unclean.
52:167
But they were not yet able to hear this.
52:168
正因如此,那立法者(摩西)也只容許那存留在體內的時間之久;
For this reason, then, the lawgiver also allows so much time as it may remain within;
52:169
at all events, he commands one to bathe in the evening and to be clean, measuring out the time of digestion and of excretion.
52:170
But the things of the heart, He says, remain within, and it is by coming forth that they defile, not merely by remaining.
52:171
祂首先列出惡念,這乃是猶太人的特點;
And first He sets down the evil thoughts, which was a Jewish trait;
52:172
and He does not yet make His proof from the nature of the things themselves, but from the offspring of the belly and of the heart, and from the fact that the one remains while the other does not.
52:173
因為那從外面進入的,還要從外面出去;
For the things which enter in from without pass out again;
52:174
but the things that are begotten from within, when they come forth, defile; and they defile all the more when they come forth.
52:175
For they were not yet able, as I said, to hear these things with the fitting seriousness of mind.
52:176
但馬可說,主說這些話,乃是要潔淨一切食物;
But Mark says that in saying these things He was cleansing all foods;
52:177
yet He did not make it plain, nor did He say, 'To eat such and such foods does not defile the man;'
52:178
for they could not bear to hear Him so plainly.
52:179
But 'to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.'
52:180
那麼,讓我們來學習甚麼才是使人污穢的;
Let us then learn what the things are that defile the man;
52:181
for indeed in the Church too we see such a custom
52:182
在眾人中間盛行,他們既留心穿著潔淨的衣裳進來,又留心洗淨自己的手;
prevailing among the many, who are diligent both to enter in clean garments and to wash their hands;
52:183
but as for presenting a clean soul to God, they make no account of it.
52:184
我說這話,並不是禁止洗手,也不是禁止洗口;
And I say this not to forbid the washing of hands, nor of the mouth;
52:185
but wishing that one should wash in the way that is fitting — not with water only, but instead of water with the virtues.
52:186
For the filth of the mouth is evil-speaking, blasphemy, reviling, angry words, foul talk, laughter, buffoonery.
52:187
所以,你若自知從未出過這樣的話,也未曾沾染這樣的污穢,就可以坦然無懼地前來;
If therefore you are conscious to yourself of uttering none of these things, nor of being defiled with this filth, draw near with boldness;
52:188
but if you have received these stains ten thousand times, why do you labor in vain, rinsing your tongue with water while carrying about in it the deadly and hurtful filth? 5.
52:189
For tell me, if you had dung and mire on your hands, would you have dared to pray? By no means.
52:190
然而這其實毫無妨害;
And yet this is no harm at all;
52:191
How then are you scrupulous in things indifferent, but careless in things forbidden? What then? Ought one not to pray? he says.
52:192
One ought indeed, but not while defiled, nor having such mire.
52:193
What then, he says, if I am overtaken by it?
52:194
How and in what manner? Weep, groan, give alms, make your defense to the one you have insulted, be reconciled through these things, wipe your tongue clean, lest you provoke God the more.
52:195
因為若有人兩手滿了糞穢,這樣抱住你的腳來哀求你,你不但不聽他,反倒用腳把他踢開;
For indeed, if someone with his hands full of dung were to clasp your feet in supplication, not only would you not have listened to him, but you would even have kicked him away with your foot;
52:196
how then do you dare to approach God in this manner? For the tongue is the hand of those who pray, and by it we lay hold of the knees of God.
52:197
Do not therefore defile it, lest He also say to you:
52:198
'Though you make many prayers, I will not hearken.'
52:199
For indeed, 'In the hand of the tongue are life and death;'
52:200
and, 'By your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.'
52:201
Guard your tongue therefore more than the pupil of your eye.
52:202
The tongue is a royal horse.
52:203
你若給它戴上嚼環,教它步伐合宜地行走,君王就必安坐其上,騎乘於它;
If then you put a bridle upon it and teach it to go in orderly measure, the King will rest upon it and be seated on it;
52:204
but if you let it run unbridled and leaping, it becomes the chariot of the devil and of the demons.
52:205
你在與自己的妻子同房之後,尚且不敢禱告,雖然這本不算是可指責的事;
But you, after intercourse with your own wife, do not dare to pray, though this is no matter of blame;
52:206
yet while you are still in reviling and insult — which even brings on hell — before you have cleansed yourself well, you stretch out your hands? And how is it you do not shudder? Tell me.
52:207
Did you not hear Paul saying that 'Marriage is honorable, and the bed undefiled'? But if, when you rise from the undefiled bed, you do not dare to come to prayer, how, while you are on the devil's bed, do you call upon that awesome and dreadful Name? For to be steeped in insults and revilings is a devilish bed.
52:208
And like some wicked adulterer, wrath consorts with us amid much pleasure, casting into us its deadly seed, causing the devilish enmity to be brought to birth, and working all things contrary to marriage.
52:209
因為婚姻使二人成為一體;
For marriage makes the two become one flesh;
52:210
but wrath divides those who are united into many parts, and rends and cuts asunder the very soul.
52:211
所以,為要你能坦然無懼地就近神,當忿怒臨到你、要與你苟合時,不要接納它;
In order therefore that you may approach God with boldness, do not receive wrath when it comes upon you and wishes to consort with you;
52:212
but drive it away like a raging dog.
52:213
For thus also Paul gave command.
52:214
'Lifting up,' he says, 'holy hands, without wrath and disputing.'
52:215
所以,不要羞辱你的舌頭;
Do not then put your tongue to shame;
52:216
因為當它失去了自己坦然無懼的膽量時,怎能為你祈求呢?倒要用溫良和謙卑的心來裝飾它;
for how shall it make petition on your behalf, when it has lost its own boldness of access? Rather, adorn it with gentleness and humility of mind;
52:217
使它配得上你所懇求的神;
make it worthy of the God whom you entreat;
52:218
fill it with blessing and with abundant almsgiving.
52:219
For it is possible to give alms even by means of words.
52:220
因為「一句話勝過一件禮物」;
For 'a word is better than a gift';
52:221
and, 'Answer the poor man peaceably with meekness.'
52:222
And throughout all the rest of your time adorn it with the recounting of the divine laws.
52:223
For 'let all your discourse be in the law of the Most High.'
52:224
Having thus adorned ourselves, let us draw near to the King, and let us fall upon our knees, not with the body only, but also with the mind.
52:225
Let us consider whom we approach, and on behalf of what, and what it is we desire to accomplish.
52:226
我們所親近的,正是那位撒拉弗一見便轉臉不敢注視、承受不住那光輝的主;
We approach Him whom the Seraphim, when they beheld, turned away their faces, unable to bear the radiance;
52:227
we approach God, who dwells in unapproachable light.
52:228
And we approach for deliverance from hell, for forgiveness of sins, for the release from those punishments unbearable to us, for the attaining of the heavens and of the good things that are there.
52:229
所以我們當用身體、也用心思俯伏下拜,好叫祂在我們俯伏之時將我們扶起;
Let us therefore fall down both with the body and with the mind, that He may raise us up when we lie prostrate;
52:230
let us discourse with gentleness and with all meekness.
52:231
And who, one might say, is so wretched and miserable as not to become gentle in prayer? He who prays with cursing, and fills himself with rage, and cries out against his enemies.
52:232
For if you wish to accuse, accuse yourself.
52:233
If you wish to whet and sharpen your tongue, do it against your own sins.
52:234
也不要述說別人對你所做的惡,倒要述說你對自己所做的;
And do not tell what evil another has done to you, but what you have done to yourself;
52:235
for this is especially evil.
52:236
For neither can any other man be able to wrong you, unless you wrong yourself.
52:237
所以你若想與那些行不義的人為敵,就要先起來對付你自己;
So that if you wish to be set against those who do wrong, first proceed against yourself;
52:238
for in proportion as you proceed against another, you go away having been the more wronged.
52:239
And what wrong at all can you tell of? That such a one insulted you, and plundered you, and cast you into perils? But this is not to have been wronged; rather, if we are sober, it is even to have been benefited in the greatest degree.
52:240
For it is the one who has done such things that is the wronged party, not the one who has suffered them.
52:241
And this above all is the cause of all evils, that we do not even know who it is that is being wronged, and who it is that does the wrong.
52:242
For if we knew this well, we would never wrong ourselves, nor pray against another, having learned that it is impossible to suffer evil at the hands of another.
52:243
For it is not to be plundered, but to plunder, that is the evil.
52:244
所以你若搶奪了人,就當控告你自己;
So that if you have plundered, accuse yourself;
52:245
but if you have been plundered, then pray also for the one who has plundered you, because he has profited you in the greatest degree.
52:246
For even though such was not the intention of the one who did it, yet you were benefited in the greatest degree, if you bear it nobly.
52:247
因為對那人,無論是世人,還是神聖的律法,都判定他為可悲的;
For him both men and the divine laws pronounce wretched;
52:248
but you, the one who has been wronged, they both crown and proclaim aloud.
52:249
因為即使有人在發燒之際從別人那裡搶去一個盛水的器皿,縱情滿足他那有害的慾望,我們也不會說那被搶的人受了虧負,倒要說那搶奪的人受了虧負;
For not even if a man in a fever should snatch from someone a vessel containing water, and gorge himself upon his harmful craving, would we say that the one robbed had been wronged, but rather the one who did the robbing;
52:250
for he increased his fever, and made his disease more grievous.
52:251
Reason then in this way also concerning the money-loving and silver-loving man.
52:252
For this man too, being in a fever far more grievous than the other, has kindled his own flame the more through this plundering.
52:253
And if some madman, having snatched a sword from whomever, were to do himself violence, who again was the one wronged? The one from whom it was snatched, or the one who snatched it? It is plain that it is the one who snatched it.
52:254
Therefore in the case of the plundering of money let us render this very same verdict.
52:255
因為刀之於瘋子是怎樣,錢財之於貪財的人也是怎樣;
For what a sword is to a madman, that also is wealth to the lover of money;
52:256
or rather, it is even more grievous.
52:257
因為那瘋子,拿起刀來刺穿了自己,就此擺脫了瘋狂,不再受第二次刺傷;
For the madman, having taken the sword and thrust it through himself, is both released from his madness, and no longer receives a second blow;
52:258
但貪財的人卻每一天都受著比那瘋子重上千萬倍的傷,非但不使自己脫離瘋狂,反倒更加變本加厲;
but the lover of money receives, each and every day, wounds ten thousand times more grievous than his, not releasing himself from the madness, but rather intensifying it the more;
52:259
and the more wounds he receives, so much the more does he furnish occasion for other, still more grievous blows.
52:260
Considering these things, then, let us flee this sword, let us flee this madness, so that even if late at last we may come to our right mind.
52:261
For indeed this virtue also we must call temperance, no less than that other one which is so esteemed by all.
52:262
因為在那裡,爭戰是針對單一慾望的暴政;
For there the struggle takes place against the tyranny of a single desire;
52:263
but here one must prevail over many and manifold desires.
52:264
For nothing, nothing is more senseless than the slave of money.
52:265
他看似在轄制,其實被轄制;
He seems to rule, while being ruled;
52:266
他看似作主人,其實是奴僕;
he seems to be master, while being a slave;
52:267
他給自己套上枷鎖,卻歡喜;
and putting bonds about himself, he rejoices;
52:268
他使那野獸更加兇猛,卻高興;
making the beast more savage, he is glad;
52:269
他淪為俘虜,卻歡騰雀躍;
and becoming a captive, he exults and leaps for joy;
52:270
and seeing a rabid dog raging and springing upon his soul, when he ought to bind it and waste it away with hunger, he instead furnishes it abundant food, so that it may spring the more and become the more terrible.
52:271
Considering all these things, then, let us loose the bonds, let us destroy the beast, let us drive away the disease, let us cast out this madness, so that we may enjoy calm,
52:272
得享純潔的健康,並以極大的喜樂駛入那風平浪靜的港灣,得著那永恆的美善;
and pure health, and with much pleasure, having sailed into the tranquil harbour, may attain the eternal good things;
52:273
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the might, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.
