And as Jesus was passing on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying:
32:2
And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him, and Jesus says to them:
32:3
'Do you believe that I am able to do this?' They say to Him:
32:4
'Yes, Lord.' Then He touched their eyes, saying:
32:5
'According to your faith be it done to you.' And their eyes were opened.
32:6
Why does He draw them on as they cry out? Here again He is teaching us to thrust away the glory that comes from the many.
32:7
For since the house was near, He leads them there to heal them in private.
32:8
And this is plain also from the fact that He charged them to tell no one.
32:9
這對猶太人而言乃是不小的控訴:這些人雖然眼睛已瞎,僅憑聽聞就領受了信心;
And this is no small accusation against the Jews, when these men, though their eyes had been struck out, receive faith from hearing alone;
32:10
while those, though beholding the miracles and having sight to bear witness to what was being done, do all the contrary.
32:11
And observe their earnestness, both from their crying out and from the very manner of their entreaty.
32:12
For they did not come to Him simply, but crying aloud, and putting forward nothing else but mercy.
32:13
And they called Him Son of David, since the name seemed to be one of honor.
32:14
At any rate, in many places the prophets too used thus to call the kings whom they wished to honor and to declare great.
32:15
And having led them into the house, He brings forward a second question.
32:16
因為在許多地方,祂都是在被人懇求之後才切切地醫治,免得有人以為祂是出於好名而急於行這些神蹟;
For in many places He was earnest to heal upon being entreated, lest anyone should suppose that He rushed upon these miracles out of vainglory;
32:17
不僅為此緣故,也是要顯明他們確實配得醫治;
and not for this reason only, but also that He might show that they were indeed worthy of healing;
32:18
and that no one might say that, if He saved by mercy alone, all ought to be saved.
32:19
For loving-kindness too has a certain principle, that which comes from the faith of those who are saved.
32:20
And not for these reasons only does He require of them faith, but since they had said 'Son of David,' leading them up to something higher, and teaching them what they ought to imagine concerning Him, He says:
32:21
'Do you believe that I am able to do this?' He did not say
32:22
'Do you believe that I am able to entreat My Father, that I am able to pray,' but 'that I Myself am able to do this.'
32:23
What then do they say? 'Yes, Lord.'
32:24
No longer do they call Him Son of David, but they soar up higher, and confess His lordship.
32:25
And then at last He too lays on His hand, saying:
32:26
'According to your faith be it done to you.'
32:27
And He does this to strengthen their faith, and to show that they are sharers in the achievement, and to bear witness that their words were not flattery.
32:28
因為祂沒有說「你們的眼睛要開了」,而是說「照著你們的信心,給你們成全了吧」;
For He did not say, 'Let your eyes be opened,' but, 'According to your faith be it done to you;'
32:29
which He says to many of those who came to Him, hastening to proclaim beforehand the faith in the soul before the healing of the bodies, so as both to make those more esteemed, and to render others more earnest.
32:30
在那癱子的事上也是如此;
So also in the case of the paralytic;
32:31
for indeed, before He braced up the body, He raised up the soul that lay prostrate, saying:
32:32
'Take courage, child, your sins are forgiven you;'
32:33
And raising up the little girl as well, He took her by the hand, and through the meal He taught her to know her Benefactor.
32:34
And in the case of the centurion He acted likewise, committing the whole matter to faith.
32:35
And when He was delivering the disciples from the storm of the sea, He first delivered them from their little faith. So it is here also.
32:36
For even before their utterance He Himself knew the hidden things of the mind.
32:37
But in order that He might lead others also to the same zeal, and might make them manifest to the rest, through the completion of the healing He proclaimed aloud their hidden faith.
32:38
Then, after the healing, He commands them to tell no one.
32:39
And He does not simply command it, but with much vehemence.
32:40
For Jesus, it says, sternly charged them, saying...
32:41
But they, when they had gone out, spread abroad His fame in all that land.
32:42
Indeed those men could not contain themselves, but became heralds and evangelists.
32:43
And though commanded to conceal what had happened, they could not hold their peace.
32:44
But if elsewhere He appears saying...
32:45
'Go, and declare the glory of God'...
32:46
that saying is not contrary to this one, but even fully in accord with it.
32:47
因為祂教導我們不要說關於自己的事,甚至要制止那些想要稱讚我們的人;
For He teaches us to say nothing about ourselves, but even to restrain those who wish to praise us;
32:48
but if the glory be referred to God, not only not to hinder it, but even to enjoin the doing of it.
32:49
And as they were going out, it says, behold, they brought to Him a man that was dumb and possessed by a demon.
32:50
因為這病苦不是出於天然,乃是那鬼的詭計;
For the affliction was not of nature, but the plotting of the demon;
32:51
wherefore he also had need of others to bring him.
32:52
For neither could he entreat on his own behalf, being speechless, nor supplicate others, since the demon had bound his tongue, and together with the tongue had fettered his soul.
32:53
For this reason He does not even demand faith of him, but straightway corrects the malady.
32:54
For when the demon was cast out, it says, the dumb man spoke.
32:55
And the multitudes marvelled, saying...
32:56
'It was never so seen in Israel.'
32:57
This above all vexed the Pharisees, that they set Him above all men, not only above those then living, but even above all who had ever been.
32:58
And they set Him above them, not because He healed, but because He did so easily, and swiftly, and healed maladies without number, even such as were incurable.
32:59
But the Pharisees did the very opposite of all this.
32:60
For they not only slander the things that were done, but are not even ashamed to contradict themselves.
32:61
For what do they say? 'By the prince of the demons He casts out the demons.'
32:62
還有什麼比這更愚昧的呢?首先,正如祂自己在後面所說的,鬼絕不可能趕鬼;
Than which what could be more senseless? For, in the first place, as He Himself also says further on, it is impossible for a demon to cast out a demon;
32:63
for that one is wont to knit together his own works, not to destroy them.
32:64
但祂不但趕鬼,也潔淨了長大痲瘋的,叫死人復活,制伏了海,赦免了罪,宣講天國,並領人歸向父;
But He not only cast out demons, but also cleansed lepers, and raised the dead, and bridled the sea, and remitted sins, and preached the kingdom, and brought men to the Father;
32:65
which things a demon would never choose to do, nor could ever accomplish.
32:66
For the demons lead men to idols, and draw them away from God, and persuade them to disbelieve in the life to come.
32:67
The demon, when insulted, does not do good; whereas even when not insulted he harms those who serve and honour him.
32:68
但祂所行的卻恰恰相反;
But He does the contrary;
32:69
for after these insults and revilings, 'He went about,' it says, 'all the cities and the...
32:70
...villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease.'
32:71
祂不但沒有因他們的麻木無知而懲罰他們,甚至連斥責也沒有;
And not only did He not punish them in their insensibility, but He did not even simply rebuke them;
32:72
祂同時彰顯了祂的溫柔,並藉此駁斥他們的惡言;
at once displaying His meekness, and by this refuting their evil-speaking;
32:73
and at the same time desiring, through the signs that followed, to furnish a fuller demonstration, and then also to bring in the refutation drawn from His words.
32:74
因此,祂走遍各城、各鄉間,以及他們的各會堂;
He went about, therefore, both in cities, and in country places, and in their synagogues;
32:75
teaching us thus to requite our revilers, not with other revilings...
32:76
...but with greater benefits.
32:77
因為你若不是為人的緣故,乃是為神的緣故善待你的同伴,那麼無論他們作什麼,你都不要停止行善,好叫你的賞賜更大;
For if it is not for men's sake, but for God's sake, that you do good to your fellow-servants, then whatever they may do, do not cease from doing good, that your reward may be greater;
32:78
since he who ceases from doing good after the reviling shows that it was for the sake of their praise, and not for God's sake, that he undertook such virtue.
32:79
Wherefore Christ, teaching us that it was out of goodness alone that He proceeded to this work, not only did not wait for the sick to come to Him, but Himself also hastened to them, bringing them two of the greatest blessings:
32:80
其一,是天國的福音;
the one, the Gospel of the kingdom;
32:81
the other, the correction of all their maladies.
32:82
And He neither overlooked a city, nor passed by a village, but visited every place.
32:83
And He does not even stop at this, but displays yet another act of forethought.
32:84
For when He saw the multitudes, it says, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and cast down, like sheep having no shepherd.
32:85
Then He says to His disciples...
32:86
'The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few.'
32:87
'Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He would send forth labourers into His harvest.'
32:88
Lest He should draw all men to Himself, He sends forth the disciples.
32:89
But not for this reason only, but also that He might train them, so that, having exercised themselves in Palestine as in some wrestling-school, they might thus strip themselves for the contests of the whole world.
32:90
For this very reason He sets the training-exercises higher than the contests, so far as concerned their own virtue, that they might more easily lay hold of the contests thereafter, as one leading forth tender nestlings already toward flight.
32:91
And for the present He makes them healers of bodies, reserving for later the healing of the soul, which takes precedence.
32:92
And observe how He shows the matter to be both easy and necessary.
32:93
For what does He say? 'The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few.'
32:94
'For I send you,' He says, 'not to the sowing, but to the reaping.'
32:95
Which was what He said in the case of John:
32:96
'Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour.'
32:97
And these things He said, both to restrain their pride, and to make them confident, and to show that the greater toil had gone before.
32:98
And observe here too that He begins from lovingkindness, and not from any recompense.
32:99
For He was moved with compassion, because they were harassed and cast down, like sheep having no shepherd.
32:100
This is the accusation against the rulers of the Jews, that being shepherds they displayed the works of wolves.
32:101
For not only did they fail to set the multitude right, but they even marred their progress.
32:102
At any rate, while those men were marvelling and saying, 'It was never so seen in Israel'...
32:103
These men said the very opposite, namely, that 'By the prince of the demons He casts out the demons.'
32:104
But what labourers does He here mean? The twelve disciples.
32:105
What then? Having said, 'The labourers are few,' did He add to their number? By no means.
32:106
For what reason then did He say, 'Pray the Lord of the harvest, that He may send forth labourers into His harvest,' and yet added none to them? Because, though they were but twelve, He nevertheless made them many thereafter, not by adding to their number, but by bestowing upon them power.
32:107
Then, showing how great the gift is, He says, 'Pray the Lord of the harvest.'
32:108
And unobtrusively He indicates Himself to be the one who holds the sovereign authority.
32:109
For having said, 'Pray the Lord of the harvest,' though they made no request nor prayer, He Himself straightway ordains them, reminding them also of the words of John, and of the threshing-floor, and of Him who winnows, and of the chaff, and of the wheat.
32:110
Whence it is plain that He Himself is the husbandman, He Himself the Lord of the harvest, He Himself the Lord of the prophets.
32:111
For if He sent them to reap, plainly it was not that which belonged to others, but that which He had sown through the prophets.
32:112
And not by this alone did He encourage them, in calling their ministry a harvest, but also by making them able for the ministry.
32:113
'And when He had called unto Him,' it says, 'His twelve disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.'
32:114
And yet the Spirit had not yet been given.
32:115
'For the Spirit,' it says, 'was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.'
32:116
How then did they cast out the spirits? By His command, by His authority.
32:117
But consider also, I pray you, the fitting season of their mission.
32:118
For He did not send them at the very outset, but only when they had sufficiently enjoyed the benefit of following Him, and had seen the dead raised, the sea rebuked, the demons driven out, the paralytic knit together again, sins forgiven, the leper cleansed, and had received a sufficient proof of His power, both by deeds and by words—then it was that He sent them forth.
32:119
And not into perilous undertakings (for there was as yet no danger in Palestine), but they had only to stand firm against evil-speaking.
32:120
Nevertheless He foretells them this also concerning the dangers, preparing them beforehand even before the time, and rousing them to earnest striving by His continual prediction of these things.
32:121
Then, since He had told us of two pairs of apostles, that of Peter and that of John, and after these had shown Matthew called, but had told us nothing concerning the calling and naming of the other apostles, here of necessity He sets down their list and their number, and makes their names known, saying thus:
32:122
'The names of the twelve apostles are these.'
32:123
'The first, Simon who is called Peter.'
32:124
For there was also another Simon, the Cananite.
32:125
And Judas Iscariot, and Judas the son of James.
32:126
又有亞勒腓的兒子雅各,和西庇太的兒子雅各。馬可確是按著他們的尊位排列他們;
And James the son of Alphaeus, and James the son of Zebedee. Now Mark indeed sets them down according to their dignity;
32:127
因為在那兩位為首的之後,他隨即數點安得烈;
for after the two chief ones he then numbers Andrew;
32:128
but this evangelist does not so, but indiscriminately; nay rather, he even sets Thomas, who is far inferior to himself, before himself.
32:129
But let us look at their list from the beginning.
32:130
'The first, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother.'
32:131
這也是不小的稱讚;
This too is no small praise;
32:132
for the one he named from his virtue, and the other from his nobility of character in his manner of life.
32:133
Then, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother.
32:134
Do you see how he does not set them down according to dignity? For to me John seems to be greater, not than the rest only, but even than his own brother.
32:135
Then, having said, 'Philip and Bartholomew,' he added:
32:136
'Thomas, and Matthew the publican.'
32:137
But in the reverse order, and he even sets him before Thomas. Then, James the son of Alphaeus.
32:138
For there was, as I said before, also the son of Zebedee.
32:139
接著,他既說了「勒拜俄斯,就是那稱為達太的,和奮銳黨的西門」——他也稱這西門為迦南人——便說到那賣主的人;
Then, having said 'Lebbaeus, who was surnamed Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot,' whom he also calls the Cananite, he comes to the traitor;
32:140
and not as some enemy and foe, but as one writing a history did he thus narrate it.
32:141
He did not say, 'The abominable and utterly abominable one,' but named him from his city, 'Judas Iscariot.'
32:142
For there was also another Judas, Lebbaeus, who was surnamed Thaddaeus, whom Luke says to be the son of James, saying, 'Judas the son of James.'
32:143
Distinguishing him therefore from this one, he says:
32:144
'Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.'
32:145
And he is not ashamed to say it.
32:146
So true is it that they never hid anything, not even of those things that seemed to be matters of reproach.
32:147
And first of all, and chief, was the unlettered one, the unlearned man.
32:148
But let us see where and to whom He sends them.
32:149
'These twelve,' it says, 'Jesus sent forth.'
32:150
這些是何等人呢?就是那些漁夫、稅吏;
What sort of men were these? The fishermen, the publicans;
32:151
因為其中有四個漁夫、兩個稅吏,就是馬太和雅各;
for there were four fishermen and two publicans, Matthew and James;
32:152
And what does He say to them? Straightway He charges them, saying:
32:153
'Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and enter not into any city of the Samaritans;'
32:154
'but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.'
32:155
'For do not suppose,' He says, 'that because they insult Me, and call Me one possessed by a demon, I therefore hate them.'
32:156
'For indeed I have been earnest to set them right first of all, and leading you away from all others, I send you to these as teachers and physicians.'
32:157
'And not only do I forbid you to preach to others before these, but I do not even permit you to touch the road that leads thither, nor to enter into any such city.'
32:158
For indeed the Samaritans too are disposed in opposition to the Jews.
32:159
然而那些人(撒瑪利亞人)的情形反倒是較容易的;
And yet the affairs of those (Samaritans) were the easier;
32:160
因為他們對信仰更為傾向、更易接受;
for they were much more disposed towards the faith;
32:161
But nevertheless He sends them to the more difficult, showing His care concerning them (the Jews), and stopping the mouths of the Jews, and preparing the way for the teaching of the apostles, that they might not again bring the accusation that they had gone in unto the uncircumcised, and might not seem to have a just cause for fleeing from and turning away from them.
32:162
And He calls them sheep that are lost, not sheep that have leaped away, in every way devising forgiveness for them, and drawing on their disposition.
32:163
'And as ye go,' He says, 'preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
32:164
Do you see the greatness of the ministry? Do you see the dignity of the apostles? They are commanded to say nothing perceptible to sense, nor such things as they of Moses' company and the prophets before them, but certain new and marvellous things.
32:165
因為那些人所傳講的並非這樣的事,乃是地土,並地上的美物;
For those men did not preach such things, but earth, and the good things that are in the earth;
32:166
but these preach a kingdom of heaven, and all the things that are there.
32:167
And not from this alone are these greater, but also from their obedience.
32:168
因為他們既不退縮,也不像古時的人那樣猶疑遲延;
For neither do they draw back, nor hesitate, as did the ancients;
32:169
but although hearing of dangers and wars and unbearable evils, they receive with much readiness of persuasion the things enjoined, inasmuch as they are heralds of a kingdom.
32:170
'And what wonder,' one may say, 'if, preaching nothing gloomy or grievous, they readily obeyed?' What are you saying? Were they enjoined nothing grievous? Do you not hear of the prisons, of the leadings-away, of the intestine wars, of the hatred from all men—all which things He said that they should undergo a little later? For to others He was sending them as procurers and heralds of countless good things, but He said and proclaimed beforehand that they themselves should suffer irremediable terrors.
32:171
Then, to make them worthy of credit, He says:
32:172
'Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons;'
32:173
Freely you have received, freely give.
32:174
See how He takes thought for their character, and no less than for their miracles, showing that the miracles are nothing apart from these.
32:175
For indeed He restrains their pride, saying:
32:176
你們白白得來,也要白白捨去;
Freely you have received, freely give;
32:177
and He makes them keep themselves pure from the love of money.
32:178
Then, lest it be thought that these were their own achievement and they be lifted up by the miracles that were being wrought, He says:
32:179
你們對接待你們的人並無恩惠可誇;
You bestow no favour on those who receive you;
32:180
因為這些恩賜你們既非用價銀買來,也非靠勞苦得來;
for you did not receive these things for a price, nor by your own toil;
32:181
所以你們也要照樣捨給那些人;
so then, give to them in the same way;
32:182
for it is not possible to find a price worthy of these gifts.
32:183
Then, at once tearing up the root of evils, He says:
32:184
Do not acquire gold, nor silver, nor copper in your belts, no bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff.
32:185
He did not say, Do not take these with you, but rather, Even if it is permitted to receive them from another source, flee that wicked disease.
32:186
For by this He accomplished many good things:
32:187
其一,使門徒免遭人疑忌;
first, He made the disciples free from suspicion;
32:188
其二,使他們免去一切掛慮,好叫他們能將全副心力專注於傳道;
second, He freed them from all care, so that they might devote all their leisure to the word;
32:189
third, He taught them His own power.
32:190
This indeed is what He says to them afterwards as well:
32:191
我差你們出去、無銀無鞋的時候,你們缺少甚麼沒有?祂並非一開始就說「不要置備」;
Did you lack anything when I sent you out without money and without sandals? He did not immediately say, Do not acquire;
32:192
乃是在祂說了「要潔淨長大痲瘋的,趕出污鬼」之後,才說「甚麼都不要置備」;
but when He had said, Cleanse the lepers, cast out demons, then He said, Acquire nothing;
32:193
你們白白得來,也要白白捨去;
freely you have received, freely give;
32:194
thus supplying, through the very facts, what was expedient, and what was fitting for them, and what was possible.
32:195
但或許有人要說,其餘各事都自有其道理;
But perhaps someone might say that the other matters would have their reason;
32:196
然而至於行路不帶口袋、不帶兩件裡衣、不帶柺杖、不帶鞋,這又是為何祂如此吩咐呢?乃是因祂要操練他們達到十分嚴謹的地步;
yet as for having no bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor staff, nor sandals — for what reason did He enjoin this? Because He wished to train them in all strictness;
32:197
since above too He did not permit them to be anxious even for the coming day.
32:198
For indeed He was about to send them out as teachers to the whole inhabited world.
32:199
For this reason He also fashions them, so to speak, into angels out of men, releasing them from all care.
32:200
就是今世生活的掛慮,好叫他們只被一件事所繫,就是傳道的職事;
of this life, so that they might be held by one care only, that of teaching;
32:201
or rather, He releases them from that too, saying:
32:202
Do not be anxious about how or what you shall speak.
32:203
So that what seems to be exceedingly burdensome and grievous, this very thing He shows to be for them most easy and light.
32:204
因為再沒有甚麼比脫離掛慮與憂愁更叫人歡暢的了;
For nothing makes one so cheerful as to be freed from care and anxiety;
32:205
and especially when it is possible, being freed from this, to lack nothing at all, since God is present and becomes to them in place of all things.
32:206
Then, lest they should say, From where then shall we obtain the necessary food? He does not say to them, Have you not heard that I told you before:
32:207
你們看那天上的飛鳥」(因為他們尚未能藉行為將這誡命顯明出來);
Look at the birds of the heaven (for they were not yet able to demonstrate this precept by their deeds);
32:208
but He added something far more modest than this, saying:
32:209
因為工人得飲食是應當的;
For the workman is worthy of his food;
32:210
藉此表明他們理應由所教導的門徒供養;
showing that they ought to be fed by their disciples;
32:211
好叫他們一面不至於在所教導的人面前自高,以為自己給予一切,卻毫無所得;
so that neither should they themselves be high-minded against those they taught, as though giving all and receiving nothing from them;
32:212
nor again should those be broken off, being despised by them.
32:213
接著,唯恐他們要說「這樣,你是吩咐我們靠乞討度日麼?」並以此為羞;
Then, lest they should say, So do You bid us live by begging? and be ashamed of this;
32:214
He shows the matter to be a debt owed, both by calling them workmen, and by naming what is given a wage.
32:215
祂說,你們不要因為所作的工是在言語上,就以為從你們而出的益處是微小的;
For do not, He says, because the labour is in words, think the benefit that comes from you to be small;
32:216
因為這事實在含有許多的勞苦;
for indeed the matter involves many toils;
32:217
所以受教的人無論給予甚麼,都不是施恩,乃是償還報酬;
and whatever those who are taught may give, they bestow it not as a favour, but as rendering a recompense;
32:218
For the workman is worthy of his food.
32:219
祂說這話,並非斷定使徒的勞苦只值這麼多;
And He said this, not declaring the apostolic labours to be worth only so much;
32:220
but rather both laying down a law for them to seek nothing more, and persuading those who give, that what is done by them is not an act of generosity, but a debt.
32:221
And into whatever city or village you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there remain until you depart.
32:222
祂說,我雖說了「工人得飲食是應當的」,卻不是因此就為你們敞開了眾人的門;
For it is not, He says, because I said, The workman is worthy of his food, that I have opened to you the doors of all;
32:223
but even here I command you to exercise much strictness.
32:224
For this will profit you both for good repute, and for the very matter of being fed.
32:225
因為那人若是好人,必定供給飲食;
For if he is worthy, he will surely give food;
32:226
and especially when you ask nothing beyond what is necessary.
32:227
And not only does He bid them seek out the worthy, but also not to move from house to house, so as neither to grieve the one who receives them, nor to gain for themselves a reputation for gluttony and fickleness.
32:228
For this He indicated by saying, There remain until you depart.
32:229
And this too may be learned from the other evangelists.
32:230
Do you see how by this also He made them both venerable, and made those who received them earnest, showing that these were rather the ones who gained, both in respect of glory and in respect of benefit? Then, going over this very point again, He says:
32:231
And as you enter the house, greet it.
32:232
那家若配得,你們所求的平安就臨到那家;
And if indeed the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it;
32:233
but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.
32:234
Do you see up to what point He does not decline to give directions? And that with good reason.
32:235
因為祂正在造就敬虔的鬥士,和普天下的傳令使者;
For He was preparing athletes of godliness and heralds for the inhabited world;
32:236
and by this training them to be moderate, and making them lovable, He says:
32:237
And whoever will not receive you, nor listen to your words, as you go out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
32:238
Truly I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.
32:239
For do not, He says, because you teach, on that account wait to be greeted by others, but take the lead in showing honour.
32:240
接著,祂表明這並非空洞的問安,乃是祝福,說道:那家若配得,這平安就臨到那家;
Then, showing that this is not a bare greeting, but a blessing, If, He says, the house is worthy, it will come upon it;
32:241
那家若倨傲無禮,第一樣的刑罰便是不得享受那平安;
but if it acts insolently, the first punishment is not to enjoy the peace;
32:242
and the second, that it will suffer the fate of Sodom.
32:243
And what concern to us, one asks, is the punishment of those men? You shall have the houses of the worthy.
32:244
But what is the meaning of, 'Shake off the dust of your feet'? Either it was to show that they had received nothing from them, or that it might become a testimony against them of the long journey which the apostles had undertaken for their sake.
32:245
But consider with me how He does not yet give them everything at once.
32:246
For neither does He as yet grant them foreknowledge, so as to learn who is worthy and who is not such.
32:247
How then did He Himself lodge with a publican? Because that man had become worthy through his conversion.
32:248
But consider with me how, having stripped them of everything, He gave them everything, permitting them to abide in the houses of those who were being taught, and to enter possessing nothing.
32:249
For in this way they were both freed from anxiety, and they persuaded those men that they had come solely for the sake of their salvation—both by carrying nothing with them, and by demanding of them nothing beyond the necessities, and by not entering indiscriminately into all men's houses.
32:250
For He did not wish them to appear illustrious from the signs alone, but even before the signs, from their own virtue.
32:251
For nothing so characterizes the philosophic life as freedom from superfluity and, so far as is possible, freedom from want.
32:252
This the false apostles also knew; for which reason Paul too said,
32:253
'That wherein they boast, they may be found even as we.'
32:254
But if those who are in a foreign land and going to strangers ought to seek nothing beyond their daily food, how much more those who remain at home.
32:255
Let us not merely hear these things, but let us also imitate them.
32:256
For it was spoken not concerning the apostles only, but also concerning the saints who came after them.
32:257
Let us therefore become worthy to receive them.
32:258
For according to the disposition of those who receive them, this peace both comes and again flies away.
32:259
For this comes to pass not only from the boldness of those who teach, but also from the worthiness of those who receive.
32:260
Let us not think it a small loss to fail to enjoy such peace.
32:261
For this the prophet also proclaimed beforehand of old, saying,
32:262
'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace!'
32:263
Then, interpreting its dignity, he added, 'of those who bring good tidings of good things.'
32:264
This peace Christ also declared to be great, when He said,
32:265
'Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you.'
32:266
And we must do everything so as to enjoy it, both in the house and in the church.
32:267
For in the church too the one who presides gives peace.
32:268
And this is a figure of that peace, and one must receive him with all eagerness—by the disposition rather than by the table.
32:269
For if to fail to share from one's table is burdensome, how much more burdensome would it be to reject the one who speaks? For your sake the presbyter sits, for your sake the teacher stands, toiling and enduring hardship.
32:270
What excuse then will you have, if you do not even provide him the reception that comes from listening? For the church is the common house of all, and after you have gone in first, we too enter, preserving the figure of those apostles.
32:271
For this reason we also pronounce peace upon all in common, immediately as we enter, according to that law.
32:272
所以,當祭司進來施教之時,沒有一人可以懶散,沒有一人可以心不在焉;
Let no one therefore be slothful, let no one be distracted, when the priests have entered and are teaching;
32:273
for no small punishment is laid up for this.
32:274
For I for my part would rather, having entered ten thousand times into the house of one of you, be at a loss, than speaking here not be heard.
32:275
This is more burdensome to me than that, since this house is also the more sovereign one.
32:276
因為我們極大的產業正存放在這裡;
For here indeed our great possessions are laid up;
32:277
here are all our hopes.
32:278
For what here is not great and awe-inspiring? For this table is far more precious and more delightful, and this lampstand than that lampstand.
32:279
And they know how many diseases they have loosed who with faith and at a fitting time anointed themselves with oil.
32:280
而這個櫃子也遠比那個櫃子更美好、更為必要;
And this coffer too is far better and more necessary than that coffer;
32:281
for it holds shut up within it not garments, but almsgiving, even though those who possess it are few.
32:282
在這裡也有一張比那更美的臥榻;
Here too is a couch better than that;
32:283
for the repose that comes from the divine Scriptures is more delightful than any couch.
32:284
And if the affairs of our concord were rightly ordered among us, we should have had no other house besides this one.
32:285
至於所說的並不叫人難堪,那三千人和五千人便可作證,他們曾有同一個家、同一張桌子、同一個心靈;
And that what has been said is not burdensome, the three thousand and the five thousand bear witness, who had one house and one table and one soul;
32:286
for, it says, 'of the multitude of them that believed the heart and the soul was one.'
32:287
But since we fall far short of their virtue, and are separated according to our houses, let us at least, when we are gathered here, do this with eagerness.
32:288
For if in other things we are poor and needy, yet in these we are rich.
32:289
Wherefore here also receive with love us who enter in unto you.
32:290
And when I say, 'Peace be unto you,' and you then say, 'And to your spirit,'
32:291
你們不要單用口說,也要用心志說;
say it not with the voice only, but also with the disposition;
32:292
not with the mouth, but also with the understanding.
32:293
但你若在這裡口稱「願平安也歸與你的靈」,在外面卻與我為敵,辱罵譭謗,暗中將無數的羞辱潑在我身上——這算是哪門子的平安呢?至於我,你縱然辱罵我千萬次,我仍以純潔的心、以真誠的心志將平安賜給你,並且永不能說出任何論到你的惡言;
But if here indeed you say, 'Peace also to your spirit,' while outside you war against me, reviling and slandering, secretly heaping upon me countless reproaches—what sort of peace is this? For I, even if you revile me ten thousand times, give you peace with a pure heart, with a sincere disposition, and can never say anything evil concerning you.
32:294
And if I ever rebuke you, I do this out of care for you.
32:295
但你暗中咬囓我,又不在主人的家中接待我,我只怕你會再度加增我的憂悶;
But you, biting me in secret, and not receiving me in the Master's house, I fear lest you again increase my despondency;
32:296
not because you have insulted me, nor because you have cast me out, but because you have thrust away the peace, and have drawn upon yourself that grievous punishment.
32:297
For even if I do not shake off the dust, even if I do not turn away, the terms of the threat remain unmoved.
32:298
至於我,我確實常向你們宣告平安,並且永不停止這樣說;
For I indeed often pronounce peace upon you, and I will never cease saying this;
32:299
但你若帶著侮辱不肯領受,即便如此我也不跺下腳上的塵土;
but if with your insults you do not receive it, not even so do I shake off the dust;
32:300
not because I disregard the Master, but because I am exceedingly inflamed with love for you.
32:301
此外,我也未曾為你們的緣故受過什麼苦;
And besides, I have suffered nothing for your sake;
32:302
我既未曾走過遠路,也未曾以那樣的裝束、帶著那樣的貧乏而來(正因此我們先責備自己),也未曾赤足而行、身無第二件內衣;
neither have I come on a long journey, nor have I come in that outward form and in poverty (for which reason we first blame ourselves), nor without sandals and a second tunic;
32:303
for this reason perhaps you also are wanting in what comes from you.
32:304
然而,這並不足以作你們的推諉之詞;
Nevertheless, this does not suffice you for an excuse;
32:305
but while the judgment upon us is the greater, it grants no pardon to you.
32:306
Then the houses were churches, but now the church has become a house.
32:307
從前在家中連一句屬世的閒話都不容說;
Then it was not permitted to speak anything worldly in a house;
32:308
如今在教會裡卻沒有一句屬靈的話可說,你們甚至把市場上的事都帶進這裡來;
now there is nothing spiritual said in a church, but even here you bring in the affairs of the marketplace;
32:309
並且當神向你們講論之時,你們竟捨棄靜默聆聽所講的話,反倒插進來攪擾,摻雜進相反的事務;
and while God is discoursing, forsaking to hear in silence the things that are spoken, you throw in and mix up contrary matters;
32:310
but now you both speak and hear the things that in no way concern you.
32:311
For these things I lament, and lamenting I will not cease.
32:312
For neither am I master to change this house, but here I must remain until we depart from the present life.
32:313
Make room for us, then, as Paul commanded.
32:314
For what he said there was not spoken concerning a physical table, but concerning the mind and the understanding.
32:315
This also we seek from you: love, that warm and genuine friendship.
32:316
But if you cannot even endure this, at least love your own selves, laying aside your present slothfulness.
32:317
This is enough to comfort us: if we see you well approved and become better men.
32:318
Thus shall I also display the greater love, if, loving more, I am the less loved.
32:319
For there are indeed many things that draw us together.
32:320
One table is set before all; one Father has begotten us; we were all loosed from the same birth-pangs; the same drink is given to all.
32:321
Or rather, not only the same drink, but also to drink from one and the same cup.
32:322
For the Father, wishing to lead us into tender affection, devised this also, that we should drink from one cup.
32:323
which belongs to intense love.
32:324
But we are not worthy of the Apostles.
32:325
I too confess it, and would never deny it.
32:326
Not only of those men, but we are not even worthy of their shadow.
32:327
But nevertheless, let what is yours to give be done.
32:328
This will be able to bring you no shame at all, but rather to profit you the more.
32:329
For when you display such great love and obedience even toward the unworthy, then you will receive the greater recompense.
32:330
因為我們所講的並非自己的道理;
For we do not speak our own things;
32:331
因為在地上你們並沒有師尊;
since you have no teacher upon the earth;
32:332
我們不過是把所領受的傳給你們罷了;
but the things we received, these also we give;
32:333
and in giving them we seek nothing more from you than only to be loved.
32:334
And if we are unworthy even of this, yet by loving you we shall quickly become worthy.
32:335
And yet we have been commanded to love not only those who love us, but even our enemies.
32:336
Who then is so harsh, who so savage, that having received such a law, will turn away from and hate those who love him, even were he full of ten thousand evils? We have partaken of a spiritual table;
32:337
let us also share in a spiritual love.
32:338
For if robbers, sharing salt together, forget their trade, what defense shall we have, who ever partake of the Lord's body, and do not even imitate their gentleness?
32:339
而且對許多人來說,不僅同席,就連同屬一城,也足以結成友誼;
And yet for many, not only a shared table, but even to be of one city, has sufficed for friendship;
32:340
but we, when we have the same city, the same house, the same table, the same way, the same door, the same root, the same life, the same head, the same shepherd, king, teacher, judge, maker, and father, and when all things are common to us, of what pardon should we be worthy, being divided from one another? But you seek the signs which those men wrought when they went in—the lepers cleansed, the demons driven out, the dead raised? Yet this too is the greatest proof of your nobility and of your love: that you believe God without demanding pledges.
32:341
For it was on this account, and for another reason, that God caused the signs to cease.
32:342
For if, when signs are not being wrought, those who plume themselves on other advantages—such as eloquence of wisdom, or a display of piety—grow vainglorious, are puffed up, and split apart from one another;
32:343
if signs also had been wrought, where would divisions not have arisen? And that what has been said is no mere conjecture, the Corinthians bear witness, being from this cause divided into many parts.
32:344
Seek not, then, signs, but health of soul.
32:345
不要尋求看見一個死人復活;
Seek not to see one dead man raised;
32:346
for you have learned that the whole inhabited world is rising again.
32:347
不要尋求看見一個瞎子得醫治,倒要看那如今眾人都得回那更美、更有益處的看見;
Seek not to see one blind man healed, but behold all men now recovering the better and more profitable sight;
32:348
and learn thou also to see soberly, and set thine own eye aright.
32:349
For indeed, if we all lived as we ought, the children of the Greeks would marvel at us more than at those who work wonders.
32:350
因為神蹟常帶著一種幻術的嫌疑,並惹起別種惡意的猜疑,縱然我們的神蹟並非如此;
For signs often carry a suspicion of illusion and another wicked surmise, even though our own were not such;
32:351
然而聖潔的生活卻不能招致這樣的譭謗;
but a pure life can admit no such reproach;
32:352
rather, the possession of virtue stops the mouths of all.
32:353
所以我們當殷勤追求這德行;
Let us then be diligent about this;
32:354
for great is its wealth, and great the wonder of it.
32:355
這德行賜下真正的自由,並使人在為奴之時也能顯出這自由來;它不脫去人的奴籍,卻使那仍為奴的比自由人更尊貴——這遠勝於賜人自由;
This gives the true freedom, and enables it to be seen even in slavery, not delivering from slavery, but showing those who remain slaves more honorable than the free—which is far greater than to bestow freedom;
32:356
not making the poor man rich, but showing him, while he remains poor, more amply provided than the rich.
32:357
And if you wish to work signs too, rid yourself of transgressions, and you have accomplished the whole.
32:358
親愛的,因為罪乃是一個大鬼;
For sin is a great demon, beloved;
32:359
and if you cast this out, you have done a greater thing than those who drive out ten thousand demons.
32:360
你且聽保羅所說的話,他將德行置於神蹟之上;
Hear Paul speaking, and setting virtue above miracles;
32:361
他說:「你們要切切地追求那更大的恩賜;
'Earnestly desire,' he says, 'the greater gifts;
32:362
and moreover I show you a way beyond all measure;'
32:363
他正要述說這條道路時,並沒有提叫死人復活,也沒有提潔淨長大痲瘋的,或別的類似的事;
and being about to tell this way, he spoke not of the raising of the dead, nor the cleansing of lepers, nor any other such thing;
32:364
but in place of all these he set love.
32:365
你也要聽基督所說的話;
Hear Christ also speaking;
32:366
'Rejoice not that the demons are subject to you, but that your names are written in heaven.'
32:367
'Many will say to me in that day:
32:368
Did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons, and do many mighty works? And then will I confess to them, that I never knew you.'
32:369
And when He was about to be crucified, calling His disciples He said to them:
32:370
'By this shall all men know that you are My disciples'—not if you cast out demons, but 'if you have love one for another.'
32:371
'By this shall all men know that You sent Me'—not if these raise the dead, but 'if they be one.'
32:372
因為神蹟往往有益於別人,卻反倒害了那擁有神蹟的人,使他被高抬起來,陷入狂傲與虛榮,或在別的方面受損;
For signs have often profited another, but harmed him who possessed them, lifting him up into arrogance and vainglory, or in some other way;
32:373
but in the case of good works there is no such thing to suspect, but they profit both those who practice them and many others besides.
32:374
These things, then, let us practice with much diligence.
32:375
For if you change from inhumanity to almsgiving, you have stretched out the hand that was withered.
32:376
If, forsaking the theaters, you go to the church, you have set right the foot that was lame.
32:377
If you withdraw your eyes from the harlot and from a beauty not your own, you have opened eyes that were blind.
32:378
If instead of satanic songs you learn spiritual psalms,
32:379
you who were mute have spoken.
32:380
這些神蹟乃是最大的;
These miracles are the greatest;
32:381
我們若持續行這些神蹟,我們自己也要藉此成為偉大而奇妙的人,並要吸引一切惡人歸向德行,且要享受那將來的生命;
If we continue working these signs, we ourselves shall become great and wonderful men through them, and shall draw all the wicked to virtue, and shall enjoy the life to come;
32:382
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and dominion unto the ages of ages. Amen.
