And Jesus, going out from there, withdrew into the parts of Tyre and Sidon.
53:2
And behold, a woman of Canaan, coming out from those borders, cried out to Him, saying:
53:3
主啊,大衛的子孫,可憐我吧;
Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David;
53:4
my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon. (1)
53:5
But Mark says that He could not be hidden, having come into the house.
53:6
νων·
但祂究竟為何前往這些地方呢?當祂廢除了對食物的規條之後,就也向外邦人敞開門戶,此後沿路漸進;
But why did He go off at all into these parts? When He had done away with the observance of foods, then also He opens a door to the Gentiles, henceforth advancing along the way;
53:7
just as, then, Peter also, having first been commanded to loose this law, was sent to Cornelius.
53:8
但若有人說:既然祂對門徒說「外邦人的路你們不要走」,那麼祂怎麼又接納這婦人呢?我們首先要說:祂所吩咐門徒的,祂自己並不受其約束;
But if someone should say, How then, when He said to the disciples, 'Go not into the way of the Gentiles,' does He admit this woman? First we would say this, that what He commanded the disciples, to that He Himself was not also bound;
53:9
其次,祂到那裡去也並不是為要傳道;
and secondly, that He did not even go there in order to preach;
53:10
which indeed Mark also, hinting at it, said, that He both hid Himself, and was not concealed. For just as not to run to them first was in the sequence of things,
53:11
so to drive away those who came to Him was unworthy of His lovingkindness.
53:12
For if it was needful to pursue those who fled, much more ought He not to flee those who pursued.
53:13
See, at any rate, how the woman is worthy of all beneficence.
53:14
For she did not even dare to come into Jerusalem, fearing and accounting herself unworthy.
53:15
For that, had this not been so, she would have come there, is plain both from her present vehemence, and from her going out of her own borders.
53:16
And some, interpreting allegorically, say that, when Christ went out from Judaea, then the Church dared to come to Him, she also having gone out from her own borders.
53:17
For 'Forget,' it says, 'thy people, and thy father's house.'
53:18
For indeed Christ went out from His borders, and the woman from her borders, and thus they were able to meet one another.
53:19
For behold, it says, a woman of Canaan, having come out from her own borders.
53:20
The evangelist brings an accusation against the woman, in order that he may display the miracle and may proclaim her the more greatly.
53:21
For indeed, when you hear that she was a Canaanite woman, call to mind those lawless nations, who overturned from their very foundations even the laws of nature.
53:22
And having called them to mind, consider also the power of Christ's coming.
53:23
For those who had been cast out, lest they should pervert the Jews, these very people proved themselves so much more fit than the Jews that they even went out beyond their own borders and drew near to Christ, while the Jews were driving Him away even as He came to them.
53:24
Having therefore come near, she says nothing else but, 「Have mercy on me,」 and by her crying out she draws a great crowd about her as onlookers.
53:25
For indeed it was a piteous sight, to behold a woman crying out with such deep feeling—and a woman who was a mother, and pleading on behalf of a daughter, and a daughter so grievously afflicted.
53:26
因為她甚至不敢將那被鬼附的女兒帶到夫子面前;
For she did not even dare to bring the demon-possessed girl into the sight of the Teacher;
53:27
but leaving her to lie at home, she herself makes the supplication.
53:28
And she tells only the affliction, and adds nothing more, nor does she drag the Physician into her house, as that nobleman did, saying,
53:29
「Come and lay Your hand,」 and, 「Come down before my child dies.」
53:30
But she, having recounted the calamity and the severity of the disease, puts forward the mercy of the Master, and cries out with a loud voice,
53:31
and she does not say, 「Have mercy on my daughter,」 but, 「Have mercy on me.」
53:32
「因為她對自己的病並無知覺;
「For she is insensible of her disease;
53:33
but it is I who am suffering countless dreadful things, I who am sick with full awareness, I who—
53:34
am driven to madness while yet in my right mind.」
53:35
「But He answered her not a word.」
53:36
這是何等奇異、出人意外的事?那些忘恩負義的猶太人,祂引領他們;那些褻瀆的人,祂勸勉他們;那些試探祂的人,祂也不撇下;
What is this strange and unexpected thing? The Jews, though ungrateful, He leads onward; those who blaspheme, He exhorts; and those who tempt Him, He does not let go;
53:37
yet this woman, running to Him and beseeching and imploring, though nurtured neither in the Law nor in the Prophets, and showing forth such great reverence—her He does not even deem worthy of an answer.
53:38
有誰見了與祂名聲相反的事,不會因此絆倒呢?因為他們曾聽說,祂周遊各村莊施行醫治;
Whom would this not have offended, seeing what happened to be contrary to His reputation? For indeed they had heard that He went about the villages healing;
53:39
yet this woman, when she came, He repels.
53:40
And whom would the affliction and the supplication not have moved to compassion, which she made on behalf of a daughter so grievously afflicted? For she came neither as one who was worthy, nor as one demanding a debt owed; but she begged to be shown mercy, and merely lamented her own calamity as a tragedy—and yet she is not even deemed worthy of an answer.
53:41
或許有許多聽見的人因此絆倒;
Perhaps many of those who heard were offended;
53:42
but she was not offended.
53:43
And why do I speak of those who heard?
53:44
For indeed I think that even the disciples themselves felt something at the woman's calamity, and were troubled and grieved.
53:45
然而雖然心裡不安,他們卻不敢說出來;
Yet nevertheless, though troubled, they did not dare to say;
53:46
but, 「The disciples came and asked Him, saying,
53:47
Send her away, for she cries out after us.」
53:48
For we too, when we wish to persuade someone, often say the very opposite.
53:49
「I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.」
53:50
那麼這婦人聽了這些話,作了什麼呢?她是靜默退去了嗎?還是放下了她的懇切呢?絕不是;
What then did the woman do, when she heard these things? Did she keep silence and withdraw? Or did she give up her earnestness? By no means;
53:51
but as for us, whenever we do not obtain our request, we withdraw, though on this very account we ought rather to press on the more.
53:52
然而那時所說的話,有誰不會被逼至絕望呢?其實單是那沉默,就足以使她陷入絕望;
And yet whom would that word, then spoken, not have driven to despair? Indeed, even the silence was enough to cast her into hopelessness;
53:53
but the answer did so all the more.
53:54
For to see even those who were her advocates rendered helpless together with herself, and to hear that the very thing was impossible to be done, cast her into unspeakable perplexity.
53:55
但這婦人卻仍不至於無措;
But nevertheless the woman was not at a loss;
53:56
but when she saw that her patrons availed nothing, she put on a noble shamelessness.
53:57
因為在此以前,她連進到祂面前都不敢;
For before this she did not even dare to come into His sight;
53:58
因為經上說:「她在我們後頭喊叫」;
for 「She cries out,」 it says, 「after us;」
53:59
but when it was likely that she, being in perplexity, would go even farther off, then she comes even nearer, and worships, saying,
53:60
What is this, O woman? Surely you do not have greater boldness than the apostles? Surely you do not have more strength? 'Boldness and strength,' she says, 'by no means; on the contrary, I am even full of shame;
53:61
but nonetheless I put forward this very shamelessness in place of a suppliant's plea. He will be moved to respect my boldness.
53:62
And what is this? Did you not hear Him saying, 'I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel'? 'I heard,' she says, 'but He Himself is Lord.'
53:63
正因如此,她甚至沒有說:「求祢代求、懇切祈求」;
For this reason she did not even say, 'Entreat and beseech';
53:64
What then does Christ do? He was not content even with this, but heightened her perplexity, saying again:
53:65
'It is not good to take the children's bread and give it to the little dogs.'
53:66
And when He deemed her worthy of a word, then He rebuked her more severely than by His silence.
53:67
祂不再把緣由推到別的事上,也不再說:「我沒有奉差遣」;
And He no longer transfers the reason to another matter, nor does He say, 'I was not sent';
53:68
but by however much she intensified her supplication, by just so much did He Himself intensify His refusal.
53:69
And He no longer calls them sheep, but children, and her a little dog.
53:70
What then does the woman do? From His very own words she weaves her defense.
53:71
'For if I am a little dog,' she says, 'I am no stranger.'
53:72
Rightly did Christ say:
53:73
這婦人心懷智慧,顯出了全然的堅忍與信心,而且是在受辱之中如此行;
The woman plays the philosopher, and displays all endurance and faith, and this while being insulted;
53:74
but those men, though cared for and honored, repaid Him with the opposite.
53:75
'That the food is necessary for the children,' she says, 'I too know;
53:76
yet not even I am shut out, though I am a little dog.'
53:77
'For if it were not lawful to take at all, then neither would it be lawful to share in the crumbs;
53:78
but if one ought to share even in a little, then not even I am shut out, though I be a little dog;
53:79
rather, in this very way I most of all have a share, if I am a little dog.'
53:80
基督正是為著這些緣故而延遲賜予;
For these reasons Christ deferred;
53:81
for these reasons He kept refusing the gift, that He might display her wisdom.
53:82
For if He had not been about to give, He would not afterward
53:83
賜下,也不會再一次止住她的口了;
have given, nor would He have silenced her again;
53:84
but it was as He does in the case of the centurion, saying:
53:85
'I will come and heal him,' that we might learn that man's reverence, and hear him saying:
53:86
「祢到我舍下,我不敢當」;
'I am not worthy that You should come under my roof';
53:87
and as He does in the case of the woman with the flow of blood, saying:
53:88
「我知道有能力從我身上出去」,好叫她的信顯明出來;
'I know that power has gone out from Me,' that He might make her faith manifest;
53:89
又如在那撒瑪利亞婦人的事上,好顯明她連在被責備時也不退去;
and as in the case of the Samaritan woman, that He might show how she did not withdraw even when reproved;
53:90
for He did not wish so great a virtue of a woman to be hidden.
53:91
So that what He said was not the mark of one insulting, but of one drawing forth, and uncovering the treasure laid up within.
53:92
But do you, along with her faith, observe also her humility.
53:93
祂固然稱猶太人為兒女;
For He indeed called the Jews children;
53:94
但她不以此為足,反倒稱他們為主人;
but she was not content with this, but even named them lords;
53:95
so far was she from being grieved at the praises given to others.
53:96
'For even the little dogs,' she says, 'eat of the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.'
53:97
你看見這婦人的悟性了嗎?她竟不敢反駁,也不因別人所受的稱讚而受刺激,也不因那羞辱而惱怒。你看見她的堅毅了嗎?祂說:「這是不好的」;
Do you see the woman's understanding, how she did not dare even to contradict, nor was stung by the praises given to others, nor was indignant at the insult? Do you see her firmness? He said, 'It is not good';
53:98
她卻說:「主啊,不錯」;
but she said, 'Yes, Lord';
53:99
祂稱他們為兒女,她卻稱他們為主人;
He called them children, but she called them lords;
53:100
He called her a little dog, but she went on to add the very work of the little dog.
53:101
Do you see this woman's humility? Now hear the boastful speech of the Jews.
53:102
'We are Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to anyone.'
53:103
And again, 'We have been born of God.'
53:104
But not so this woman; rather, she calls herself a little dog, and calls those others masters.
53:105
And for this very reason she became a child.
53:106
What then does Christ say? 'O woman, great is your faith.'
53:107
For it was on this account that He deferred, that He might call forth this word, that He might crown the woman.
53:108
And what He says is of this sort:
53:109
「你的信心實在能成就比這更大的事;
'Your faith is indeed able to accomplish even greater things than these;
53:110
nevertheless, be it done to you as you desire.'
53:111
This word is akin to that voice which said,
53:112
'Let the heaven come to be,' and it came to be.
53:113
'And her daughter was healed from that hour.'
53:114
Do you see how she too contributed no small thing to her daughter's healing? For this reason Christ did not say, 'Let your daughter be healed,'
53:115
而是說:「你的信心是大的;照你所願的,給你成全了吧」;
but rather, 'Great is your faith; be it done to you as you desire';
53:116
that you may learn that these words were not spoken idly nor by way of flattery, but that great is the power of faith.
53:117
At any rate, He entrusted the exact testing and demonstration of her faith to the outcome of the events.
53:118
Her daughter, then, was healed straightway.
53:119
But consider for me how, when the apostles had been worsted and had accomplished nothing, this woman prevailed.
53:120
So great a thing is perseverance in prayer.
53:121
For indeed He wills rather to be entreated by us on behalf of our own concerns, guilty though we are, than by others on our behalf.
53:122
然而那些人本有更大的坦然無懼可以親近祂;
And yet those men had greater boldness of access;
53:123
but this woman displayed great steadfastness.
53:124
And through the outcome He both made His defense to the disciples concerning the delay, and showed that it was justly that He did not yield when they made their request.
53:125
「耶穌離開那裡,來到加利利的海邊;
'And Jesus, departing from there, came beside the sea of Galilee;
53:126
and having gone up onto the mountain, He sat down there.'
53:127
'And great crowds came to Him, having with them the lame, the blind, the maimed, the deaf,
53:128
把他們放在祂腳前;
and they cast them down at His feet;
53:129
祂就治好他們,甚至眾人都希奇,因為看見啞巴說話、殘廢的痊癒、瘸子行走、瞎子看見;
and He healed them, so that the crowds marveled, seeing the deaf speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing;
53:130
and they glorified the God of Israel.'
53:131
At one time He goes about, at another He sits waiting for the afflicted, and leads even the lame up onto the mountain.
53:132
他們甚至不再摸祂的衣裳,反倒登上那更高之處,被放在祂的腳前;
And no longer do they so much as touch His garment, but they mount up to the higher place, being cast down at His feet;
53:133
and they displayed their faith in twofold measure, both by going up onto the mountain while lame, and by needing nothing else but only to be cast down at His feet.
53:134
And great and marvelous was the wonder, to see those who had been carried now walking, and the maimed no longer needing any to lead them by the hand.
53:135
For indeed both the multitude of those being healed and the ease of the healing astounded them.
53:136
Do you see how He healed the woman with so much delay, but these straightway? Not because these were better than she, but because
53:137
在她的事上,祂之所以拖延遲緩,是為要顯出她那堅定不移的心志;
for this reason in her case He defers and delays, displaying her firmness of purpose;
53:138
but to these He grants the gift straightway, stopping the mouths of the unbelieving Jews, and cutting off every excuse of theirs.
53:139
For the greater the benefit anyone receives, the more liable he is to punishment if he proves ungrateful and is not made better even by the honor. For this very reason the rich too are punished more than the poor when they are wicked, because not even amid abundance did they become gentle.
53:140
For do not tell me that they gave alms.
53:141
For if they did not give in proportion to the worth of their substance, not even so will they escape.
53:142
For almsgiving is not judged by the measure of what is given, but by the liberality of the disposition.
53:143
But if these pay the penalty, much more will those who are agitated over superfluous things—those who build three-storeyed and four-storeyed houses, yet despise the hungry; those who are careful about covetousness, but careless about almsgiving.
53:144
But since the discourse has fallen upon almsgiving, come then, let us today take up again that discourse which, three days ago, I made concerning kindness to mankind but left unfinished.
53:145
You remember, when the other day I was discoursing about extravagance in footwear, and about that vain toil, and the effeminacy of the young men—then it was that our discourse, starting from almsgiving, fell aside into those charges.
53:146
What then were the matters set in motion at that time? That almsgiving is a certain art, having its workshop in heaven, and for its teacher not a man but God.
53:147
Then, while inquiring what is an art and what is not an art, we fell into the matter of vain toils and mischievous crafts, among which we also made mention of this craft of the shoemakers.
53:148
Do you then recall it? Come then, today also let us take up again what was said at that time, and let us show how almsgiving is an art, and better than all arts.
53:149
For if it is proper to an art to terminate in something useful, and nothing is more useful than almsgiving, it is quite plain that this is both an art and better than all arts.
53:150
因為它不為我們製造鞋子,不織造衣裳,也不建造那泥土的房屋;
For it does not make shoes for us, nor weave garments, nor build houses of clay;
53:151
but it procures eternal life, and snatches us from the hands of death, and makes us splendid in each of the two lives, and builds the mansions that are in the heavens, and those eternal tabernacles.
53:152
This it is that does not permit our lamps to be quenched, nor us to appear at the wedding with soiled garments, but it washes them and makes them cleaner than snow.
53:153
For 'Though your sins be as scarlet, I will make them white as snow.' It does not permit us to fall where that rich man fell, nor even to hear those fearful words, but leads us by the hand into the bosom of Abraham.
53:154
然而在那些服務今生的技藝中,每一門若單獨來看,都只有一項成就;
And yet of the arts that serve this life, each one when taken by itself has but a single accomplishment;
53:155
例如農耕是為了養育,紡織是為了穿著;
as, for instance, farming, to nourish; weaving, to clothe;
53:156
for neither does one alone suffice to contribute for us the things that come from itself.
53:157
And if you please, let us examine farming first.
53:158
因為它若沒有鐵匠的技藝,好從中借得鋤頭、犁頭、鐮刀、斧頭,以及其他更多的工具;
For unless it has the smith's art, so as to borrow from it a mattock and a ploughshare and a sickle and an axe, and many more things besides;
53:159
又沒有木匠的技藝,好裝配犁具、製作牛軛,以及用來碾打麥穗的車輛;
and the carpenter's art, so as to fix a plough, and to fashion a yoke, and a wagon for threshing the ears of grain;
53:160
又沒有皮革匠的技藝,好製作皮帶;
and the leather-worker's art, so as to make a strap;
53:161
又沒有建築匠的技藝,好為耕田的牛築造牛欄,為撒種的農夫建造房屋;
and the builder's art, so as to build a stall for the ploughing oxen, and houses for the sowing husbandmen;
53:162
又沒有伐木匠的技藝,好砍伐木料;
and the wood-cutter's art, so as to hew timber;
53:163
and the baker's art after all these—then it appears nowhere.
53:164
紡織也是如此,每當它要製作什麼時,就召來許多技藝與它同工,好叫它們一同著手於所面臨的工作;
So too weaving, whenever it makes anything, calls many arts along with itself, so that they may lay hold with it of the tasks set before it;
53:165
and unless these come and lend a hand, it too stands, like that one, at a loss.
53:166
And each of the arts stands in need of another.
53:167
But whenever we must show mercy, we need nothing else, but need only the disposition.
53:168
你若說它需要錢財、房舍、衣裳和鞋子,就去讀那基督論到寡婦時所說的話,然後止息這樣的憂慮吧;
And if you should say that it needs money, and dwellings, and garments, and shoes, read those words of Christ which He spoke concerning the widow, and cease from this anxiety;
53:169
因為即使你極其貧窮,是那些行乞之人中的一個,只要你投入兩個小錢,你就已成全了那全部;
for even if you are exceedingly poor, and one of the beggars, if you cast in two mites, you have accomplished the whole;
53:170
and if you give a barley-cake, having this only, you have come to the perfection of the art.
53:171
let us gain this knowledge, and set it in good practice.
53:172
For indeed it is better to know this than to be a king and to wear a diadem.
53:173
For this is not its only advantage, that it needs no other arts, but it is also effective in manifold matters, in many and all sorts.
53:174
因為它既建造那在諸天之上永遠長存的房屋,又教導那些正確操練它的人,如何能逃脫那不死的死亡;
For it both builds the houses that abide forever in the heavens, and teaches those who have practiced it aright how they may escape the immortal death;
53:175
and it bestows on you treasures that are never spent, but escape every harm—both that from robbers, and that from worms, and that from moths, and that from time.
53:176
And yet if someone had taught you only this for the keeping of wheat, what would you not have given, so as to be able to preserve your grain unspoiled for many years? But behold, this teaches you not for wheat only, but for all things, and shows how both your possessions and your soul and your body may remain unspoiled.
53:177
And what need is there to tell in detail all the achievements of this art? For this teaches you how you may become like God, which is the sum of all good things.
53:178
Do you see how its work is not one, but many? Without needing any other art, it builds houses, it weaves garments,
53:179
it prepares treasures that cannot be spent, it makes us prevail over death, master the devil, and it renders us like unto God.
53:180
那麼,還有什麼比這門技藝更有益處呢?因為其他技藝,正如前面所說,都隨著今生一同消逝;當工匠患病時,這些技藝便無處可見;它們無力保存自己所造的作品,需要勞苦、需要許多時間,還需要無數其他的東西;
What, then, could be more useful than this art? For the other arts, together with what has been said, are dissolved along with the present life, and when the craftsmen fall sick they are nowhere to be seen; they cannot preserve their own works, they require toil and much time and countless other things besides;
53:181
然而這門技藝,當世界過去之時,那時反倒最為顯明;
but this art, when the world passes away, then most of all shines forth;
53:182
當我們死去時,那時它反倒最為光耀奪目,並顯出它所成就的工作;
when we die, then most of all does it shine bright and display the works it has wrought;
53:183
and it requires neither time, nor toil, nor any other such labour, but it works even while you are sick, and when you have grown old, and it journeys with you to the life to come, and never forsakes you.
53:184
This art makes you mightier than sophists and orators.
53:185
因為那些在那些技藝上博得聲譽的人,有許多嫉妒他們的人;
For those who win renown in those other arts have many who envy them;
53:186
but those who shine in this art have countless multitudes who pray for them.
53:187
那些人站在人的審判台前,為受冤枉的人辯護,卻也常常為行不義的人辯護;然而這門技藝卻站在基督的審判台前,不僅為人辯護,甚至說服那審判者親自為受審者辯護,並為他投票;
And those others stand before the tribunal of men, pleading for those who are wronged, but often also for those who do wrong; whereas this art stands before the tribunal of Christ, not only pleading, but even persuading the very Judge to plead for the one on trial and to cast His vote in his favour;
53:188
and though he have sinned ten thousand times, it both crowns him and proclaims him aloud.
53:189
"For give alms," it says, "and all things shall be clean unto you."
53:190
And why do I speak of things to come? For even in the present life, if we were to ask men which they would rather be, many sophists and orators, or merciful and loving toward mankind, you will hear them choosing the latter.
53:191
因為若把口才除去,人生也不會受什麼虧損;
For if eloquence be taken away, life will suffer no harm;
53:192
因為實在說來,早在這門技藝出現之前,人生已維繫了長久的時間;
for indeed even before this art existed, life had held together for a long time;
53:193
but if you take away showing mercy, all things perish and are lost.
53:194
And just as it is not possible to sail the sea when the harbours and havens have been silted up, so neither can this life hold together if you take away mercy and forgiveness and kindness toward mankind.
53:195
For this reason God did not entrust these things to reason alone, but sowed many portions of it also into the sovereign power of nature.
53:196
父親如此憐憫兒女,母親也是如此,兒女對父母也是如此;
Thus fathers show mercy to their children, thus mothers, thus children to their parents;
53:197
而且這不僅在人當中,也在一切無理性的活物當中;
and this not among men only, but also among all the irrational creatures;
53:198
thus brothers show mercy to brothers, and kinsfolk, and those who are near of kin.
53:199
For we have something even from nature that inclines us toward mercy.
53:200
Therefore we are indignant on behalf of those who are wronged, and when we see men being slaughtered we are moved with compassion, and when we behold mourners we weep.
53:201
For since God greatly desires this to be rightly done, He commanded nature to contribute much toward it, showing that this is a thing exceedingly earnest to Him.
53:202
那麼,我們既思想這些事,就當引領自己、兒女以及親屬進入施捨賙濟的學堂,並讓人先學會這事過於一切,因為這正是使人成其為人的;
Considering these things, then, let us lead both ourselves and our children and our kinsfolk into the school of almsgiving, and let man learn this before all else, since this too is what makes a man;
53:203
so that whoever does not possess this has fallen away even from being a man.
53:204
And why do you marvel that this makes a man? This is God's own.
53:205
"For be ye," He says, "merciful, as your Father."
53:206
所以我們當為著一切緣故學習作有憐憫的人;
Let us therefore learn to be merciful for all reasons;
53:207
but most of all, because we too stand in great need of mercy.
53:208
And let us not count ourselves even to be alive at that time when we show no mercy.
53:209
But by almsgiving I mean that which is pure from covetousness.
53:210
因為那滿足於自己所有、卻不分給任何人的,尚且不是有憐憫的;
For if he who is content with his own and gives to no one is not merciful,
53:211
how can he who takes what belongs to others be merciful, even though he give ten thousand times? For if to enjoy merely one's own possessions is inhumanity, much more is it so to deprive others.
53:212
If those who have wronged no one are punished because they did not give a share, much more shall those be punished who even take what belongs to others.
53:213
Do not, then, say this: that one man is wronged, and another is shown mercy.
53:214
因為可怕的正在於此:那受冤枉的人,本應就是那得憐憫的人;
For this is the very dreadful thing: the man who is wronged ought himself to be the one who is shown mercy;
53:215
然而如今你卻傷害了一批人,反去醫治另一批你未曾傷害的人,其實你本應醫治那些被你傷害的人;
but as it is, you wound one set of men and then tend others whom you did not wound, when you ought to be tending those very people;
53:216
or rather, you ought not to wound at all.
53:217
For he is loving toward mankind, not who both strikes and heals, but who heals those who have been struck by others.
53:218
所以你當醫治自己的惡,而不是別人的惡;
Heal, then, your own evils, not another's;
53:219
or rather, neither strike nor cast down (for this is the part of one who is toying), but raise up those who have been cast down.
53:220
For it is not even possible to cure the evil that springs from covetousness with an equal measure of almsgiving.
53:221
For if you have grasped by covetousness a single obol, you do not need an obol again for almsgiving in order to take away the sore that comes from covetousness, but a whole talent.
53:222
正因如此,賊被拿住時,要償還四倍;
For this reason the thief, when caught, pays back fourfold;
53:223
but the one who plunders is worse than the thief.
53:224
既然賊要償還他所偷之物的四倍,那麼搶奪的人就要償還十倍,甚至遠遠更多;
And if the thief must give back fourfold what he stole, the plunderer must give tenfold and far more;
53:225
而能夠以這種方式為所行的不義贖罪,也已經是值得慶幸的了;
and one may be thankful even to be able in this way to make atonement for the injustice;
53:226
for not even then will he receive the fruit of almsgiving.
53:227
For this reason Zacchaeus says, 'I will restore fourfold whatever I have taken by false accusation, and I will give half of my possessions to the poor.'
53:228
然而在律法之下尚且要償還四倍,何況在恩典之下呢;
But if under the Law one had to give back fourfold, how much more under grace;
53:229
if this applied to the thief, how much more to the plunderer.
53:230
For here, along with the loss, there is also great insolence.
53:231
So that even if you give back a hundredfold, you have not yet given the whole.
53:232
你看見我並非白說了嗎?我曾說:「即使你奪取一個小錢而償還一他連得,即便如此你也難以得著醫治。」你若這樣行尚且勉強;
Do you see how I was not speaking in vain, when I said, 'Even if you seize an obol and pay back a talent, scarcely even so do you effect a cure'? And if, in doing this, you scarcely do so;
53:233
when you reverse the order, and plunder whole estates but bestow only a little, and not even upon those who were wronged, but upon others in their place, what defense will you have? What pardon? What hope of salvation? Do you wish to learn how great an evil you work by showing mercy in this way? Listen to the Scripture, which says:
53:234
'As one who slays the son before his father's eyes, so is he who offers a sacrifice from the goods of the poor.'
53:235
因此,讓我們把這警戒的話刻在心思裡,然後才離去;
Having therefore engraved this threat upon our mind, let us depart;
53:236
把它寫在牆壁上,放在手中,存在良心裡,隨處都有;
let us have it upon our walls, upon our hands, in our conscience, everywhere;
53:237
so that at least this fear, being vigorous in our mind, may restrain our hands from daily murders.
53:238
For plundering is more grievous than murder, consuming the poor man little by little.
53:239
In order, then, that we may be pure from this defilement, let us practice these things both toward ourselves and toward one another.
53:240
For thus we shall be more ready for mercy, and shall receive pure rewards for it, and shall enjoy the eternal good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.
