And having gathered together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born.
7:2
你看,一切事怎樣都成了對猶太人的定罪?因為當他們還未看見祂時,也還未被嫉妒所擄,便照著真理宣告那些預言的見證;
You see how all things turn to the conviction of the Jews. For so long as they did not behold Him, neither were they caught up by envy, but proclaimed the testimonies with truth;
7:3
but when they saw the glory that arose from His miracles, then, being possessed by envy, they betrayed the truth.
7:4
Yet the truth was exalted through all things, and was the more mightily upheld even by its enemies.
7:5
Behold, then, even here, how wondrous and marvellous things are dispensed.
7:6
For at one and the same time both learn somewhat more from one another, and teach one another—both the barbarians and the Jews.
7:7
因為猶太人從博士口中聽見,有一顆星曾在波斯人之地宣告了祂;
For the Jews heard from the magi that a star also had proclaimed Him in the land of the Persians;
7:8
而博士從猶太人那裡得知,這位星所宣告的,就是眾先知在許多世代以前所預言的;
and the magi learned from the Jews that this One, whom the star had proclaimed, the prophets also had foretold from many ages before;
7:9
這查問的緣由,對雙方都成了更清楚、更確切之教訓的明證;
and the occasion of the inquiry became for both a demonstration of a clearer and more exact teaching;
7:10
and the enemies of the truth are compelled, even against their will, to read the writings that are on behalf of the truth, and to interpret the prophecy, though not the whole of it.
7:11
For having named Bethlehem, and that out of it should come forth He that shall shepherd Israel, they thereafter no longer added what follows, flattering the king.
7:12
And what was this? That His goings forth are from of old, from the days of eternity.
7:13
And wherefore, one asks, if He was to come thence, did He, after His birth, dwell in Nazareth, and cast the prophecy into shadow? And in truth He did not cast it into shadow, but rather brought it the more to light.
7:14
For the fact that, though His mother dwelt there continually, He was born here, shows that the matter came to pass by dispensation.
7:15
Wherefore also He did not straightway, upon being born, go forth thence, but tarried forty days, giving to those who desired to make careful search the opportunity to examine everything with exactness.
7:16
For there were many things to move them to such an inquiry, if only they had been willing to give heed.
7:17
因為當博士來到時,全城都震動了,連同全城,那王也震動了;先知被引到中間,一個極大的公審被召集起來;此外還有更多的事在那裡發生,這一切路加都精確地記述了;
For when the magi came, the whole city was stirred up, and with the city the king; and the prophet was brought into the midst, and a very great tribunal was convened; and yet other and more things came to pass there, which Luke recounts, all of them, with exactness;
7:18
such as the things concerning Anna, and Simeon, and Zacharias, and the angels, and the shepherds—all of which were sufficient to furnish those who gave heed with occasions to discover what had come to pass.
7:19
For if the magi, coming from Persia, were not ignorant of the place, much more could those who dwelt there have learned these things.
7:20
所以祂從起初就藉著許多神蹟顯明了自己;
He showed Himself, then, from the beginning, through many miracles;
7:21
but when they were unwilling to see, having hidden Himself during the intervening time, He again revealed Himself from another and more brilliant beginning.
7:22
因為此時不再是博士,也不再是那星,乃是那從上頭而來的父,在約旦河的水流之上宣告了祂;
For it was no longer the magi, nor the star, but the Father from above who proclaimed Him at the streams of the Jordan;
7:23
聖靈也降在祂身上,把那聲音引到那受洗者的頭上;
and the Spirit came upon Him, drawing that voice down upon the head of Him who was being baptized;
7:24
約翰也放膽無畏,在猶太全地各處呼喊,用這樣的教訓充滿了那有人居住之地,並那無人居住的曠野;
and John, with all boldness, cried aloud everywhere throughout Judaea, filling the world, the uninhabited wilderness, with such teaching;
7:25
and the testimony of the miracles too, and earth, and sea, and all creation sent forth a bright voice on His behalf.
7:26
But at the season of the birth-pangs, only so much took place as was fitting quietly to point out Him who had come.
7:27
For lest the Jews should say, We know not when He was born, nor in what region, all things concerning the magi were arranged by dispensation, together with the other things which we have mentioned.
7:28
And so they could allege no excuse, seeing they had not inquired into what had come to pass.
7:29
Consider too the exactness of the prophecy.
7:30
For he did not say that He should abide in Bethlehem, but 'He shall come forth.'
7:31
So that this also belonged to the prophecy: that He should merely be born there.
7:32
But some of them, out of shamelessness, say that these things were spoken concerning Zerubbabel.
7:33
And how could that stand to reason? For surely it is not of him that it is said, 'His goings forth have been from of old, from the days of eternity.'
7:34
再者,起初所說的「必有一位從你那裡出來」,怎能適用於他呢?因為他不是生在猶太,而是生在巴比倫;
And how could that which was said at the beginning, that 'Out of thee shall He come forth,' be fitting to him? For he was not born in Judaea, but in Babylon;
7:35
whence also he was called Zerubbabel, because he was begotten there.
7:36
And all who know the tongue of the Syrians know the meaning of the name.
7:37
And besides what has been said, all the time that followed thereafter is likewise sufficient to establish the testimony.
7:38
因為經上怎麼說呢?「你在猶大的首領中並不是最小的」;
For what does it say? 'Thou art in no wise least among the princes of Judah;'
7:39
and he adds the cause of its renown, saying, that 'Out of thee shall He come forth.'
7:40
And no other made that place bright and renowned, save He alone.
7:41
因為在那降生之後,人從地極而來,為要觀看那馬槽和那茅舍之地;
For after that birth, from the ends of the world men come to see the manger and the place of the hut;
7:42
which very thing the prophet proclaimed beforehand of old, saying:
7:43
「你在猶大的首領中並不是最小的」;
'Thou art in no wise least among the princes of Judah;'
7:44
that is, among the heads of the tribes.
7:45
And in saying this he also comprehended Jerusalem.
7:46
But not even so did they give heed, although the benefit passed over unto them.
7:47
For this cause too the prophets nowhere at the beginning discourse so much about His dignity as about the benefit that came from Him unto them.
7:48
For indeed, when the Virgin was bringing Him forth,
7:49
經上說:「你要給祂起名叫耶穌」;
'Thou shalt call His name Jesus,' it says;
7:50
'For He shall save His people from their sins.'
7:51
And the Magi too said not, 'Where is the Son of God?' but, 'He that is born King of the Jews.'
7:52
在這裡他也沒有說:「必有神的兒子從你那裡出來」;
And here again he said not that 'Out of thee shall the Son of God come forth;'
7:53
but, 'A Governor, who shall shepherd my people Israel.'
7:54
For it was needful both to discourse somewhat more condescendingly in the outset, lest they should be offended, and to proclaim the things concerning their salvation, that by this they might rather be drawn on.
7:55
無論如何,凡最先引用的見證,以及那些在祂降生時立刻應驗的見證,都沒有論到祂什麼偉大崇高的事,也不像那些在神蹟顯明之後的見證;
At any rate, as many testimonies as are cited first, and those for which the season came immediately at the birth, say nothing great nor lofty concerning Him, nor such as those that came after the display of the signs;
7:56
for those speak more openly concerning His dignity.
7:57
At all events, when after many miracles the children were singing hymns unto Him, hear what the Prophet says:
7:58
「你從嬰孩和吃奶的口中,完全了讚美」;
'Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise;'
7:59
「我要觀看你指頭所造的天」;
'For I will behold the heavens, the works of thy fingers;'
7:60
which shows Him to be the Maker of the universe.
7:61
而在升天之後所引用的見證,也宣明祂與父同尊同榮;
And the testimony that was brought forward after the Ascension also declares His equality of honor with the Father;
7:62
for 'The Lord said,' it says, 'unto my Lord,'
7:63
And Isaiah too says, that:
7:64
'He that riseth up to rule over the nations, in Him shall the nations hope.'
7:65
But how does he say that Bethlehem is not least among the princes of Judah? For not in Palestine only, but throughout the whole world the village has become renowned.
7:66
然而此時這話乃是對猶太人說的;
But for the present the discourse is addressed to the Jews;
7:67
「祂要牧養我民以色列」;
'He shall shepherd my people Israel;'
7:68
其實祂牧養了普天下的世界;
and yet He shepherded the whole world;
7:69
but, as I said, He is not willing for the present to give offense by disclosing the word concerning the Gentiles.
7:70
有人或許會問:祂怎麼沒有牧養猶太的百姓呢?其實這事的確也發生了;
And how did He not shepherd the Jewish people? one may say. Indeed this very thing also came to pass;
7:71
for in here saying 'Israel,' he hinted at those of the Jews who had believed on Him.
7:72
And Paul, interpreting this, said:
7:73
'For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel; but as many as'
7:74
were begotten through faith and promise.
7:75
But if He shepherded not all, this is their charge and accusation.
7:76
因為他們本應與博士一同敬拜,並榮耀神,因為這樣的時候已經來到,赦免了他們一切的罪;
For whereas they ought to have worshiped together with the Magi, and to have glorified God, that such a season had come, loosing all their sins;
7:77
因為他們所聽見的,並沒有關乎審判台或究責的事,乃是關乎一位溫和良善的牧者;
for indeed they heard nothing about tribunals, nor about scrutinies, but about a gentle and meek Shepherd;
7:78
but they did the contrary, and were troubled, and made an uproar, and afterwards contrived countless plots.
7:79
當下希律暗暗地召了博士來,向他們仔細查問那顯現之星的時候;
Then Herod, having privily called the Magi, inquired of them exactly the time of the star that appeared;
7:80
endeavoring to slay Him that was born, which was a mark of utmost folly, not of madness only.
7:81
For indeed both the things that had been said and the things that had come to pass were sufficient to withdraw him from every such attempt.
7:82
For the things that had befallen were not according to man.
7:83
因為一顆星從天上召喚博士,蠻邦之人竟長途跋涉,為要敬拜那躺在襁褓和馬槽裡的嬰孩,而眾先知在古時竟預先宣告了這一切,以及其餘的一切事——這些都超乎人所能及;
For that a star should call the Magi from on high, and that barbarian men should undertake so great a journey in order to worship Him that lay in swaddling clothes and in a manger, and that prophets should of old have foretold all these things, and all the rest—these were greater than could befit man;
7:84
but nevertheless none of these things restrained him.
7:85
It falls foul of itself, and ever attempts things impossible to accomplish.
7:86
因為他若相信那預言,並認為它是不可更改的,那麼顯而易見,他所圖謀的乃是不可能的事;
For if he believed the prophecy, and deemed it to be immovable, it is quite plain that he was attempting things impossible;
7:87
但他若不信,並不指望所說的必要應驗,那麼他就不該恐懼害怕,也不該為此設謀;
but if again he disbelieved, and did not expect that the things spoken should come to pass, then he ought not to have dreaded and feared, nor on this account to have plotted;
7:88
so that on either side the treachery was superfluous.
7:89
And this too was a mark of utmost folly, to suppose that the Magi would prefer him to Him that was born, for whose sake they had come so long a journey.
7:90
For if before they saw Him they were so kindled with longing, after they had beheld Him and been confirmed by the prophecy, how did he hope to persuade them to betray the young child unto him? Yet nevertheless, though there were so many things to draw him away, he made the attempt. And having privily called the Magi, he inquired of them.
7:91
因為他以為猶太人是關切那孩子的;
For indeed he supposed that the Jews were solicitous for the young child;
7:92
and he would not have expected them to slide into such madness, as to be willing to give up to His enemies the Champion and Saviour, who had come for the freedom of their nation.
7:93
For this cause too he calls them privily, and inquires the time, not of the young child, but of the star, laying his snare out of great abundance of craft.
7:94
For it seems to me that the star had appeared a long time before.
7:95
因為那些博士在路途上要耗費許多時日,好使他們能立時來到那生下來者的面前;
For since the Magi were to consume much time on the journey, in order that they might present themselves immediately unto Him that was born;
7:96
for it was needful that He should be worshiped in the very swaddling clothes, so that the marvelous and paradoxical nature of the matter might appear, the star shows itself a long time before.
7:97
For if it had appeared to them in the East at the very time when He was born in Palestine, then, spending much time on the journey, they would not have seen Him in swaddling clothes when they arrived.
7:98
他若從兩歲以下的孩童下手殺戮,我們不必詫異;
And if he slays the children from two years old and under, let us not be amazed;
7:99
for his rage and his fear, seeking still greater assurance, added an even wider span of time, that none might escape.
7:100
So then, calling them, he says:
7:101
'Go and search diligently concerning the young child;'
7:102
'and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.'
7:103
Do you see his folly? For if you say these things in truth, why do you inquire secretly? But if because you wish to plot against him, how did you not perceive that, from being questioned in secret, the Magi would be able to discern the treachery? But, as I said, a soul once seized by wickedness becomes more senseless than anyone.
7:104
他並沒有說「你們去打聽那王的事」,卻說「查訪那小孩子」;
And he did not say, 'Go and learn concerning the king,' but 'concerning the young child;'
7:105
for he could not even endure to call it by the name of sovereignty.
7:106
但博士們絲毫沒有察覺這些事,只出於極大的敬虔便起身前往;
But the Magi, perceiving none of these things, out of their great reverence set forth;
7:107
因為他們斷不會料到,那人竟墮落到如此邪惡的地步,膽敢圖謀陷害這樣奇妙的救贖安排;
for they would not have supposed that that man had come to such a pitch of wickedness, and would attempt to plot against so marvelous a dispensation;
7:108
They depart, suspecting none of these things, but conjecturing all that pertains to others from what pertains to themselves.
7:109
'And lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them.'
7:110
For this reason it was also hidden, that, having lost the one who guided them by the hand, they might fall into the necessity of inquiring of the Jews, and the matter might become manifest to all.
7:111
For after they had inquired and had their enemies as teachers, the star appears to them again.
7:112
And observe the most excellent sequence that comes about.
7:113
For from the star the people of the Jews and their king receive them, and they bring forward the prophet who teaches the meaning of what appeared.
7:114
又從先知那裡,再有一位天使接了他們,將一切的事都教導他們;
And from the prophet again an angel, taking them in charge, taught them all things;
7:115
在此期間,他們藉著那星從耶路撒冷往伯利恆行走;
and meanwhile from Jerusalem to Bethlehem they journey by means of the star;
7:116
因為那星從那裡又再次與他們同行;
for the star again accompanied them from thence also;
7:117
好叫你從這裡也學到,這星並非尋常眾星之一;
that you may learn from this too that this was no one of the common sort;
7:118
for not a single star has this nature.
7:119
And it did not simply move, but went before them, drawing them on and leading them by the hand in the midst of the day.
7:120
'And what need was there any longer of this star,' one asks, 'once the place had been made known?' That the young child too might be pointed out.
7:121
因為並沒有別的什麼可以指明他;
For there was nothing else to make him manifest;
7:122
since neither was the house conspicuous, nor was the mother splendid and distinguished.
7:123
There was need, therefore, of the star to set them at the place.
7:124
Wherefore it appears to them also as they come out of Jerusalem, and does not stand still before then, until it reached the manger.
7:125
如此奇事便接連著奇事;
And wonder was joined to wonder;
7:126
for both things were beyond expectation, both that the Magi should worship, and that the star should go before them; and these were sufficient to draw on even those exceedingly hard as stone.
7:127
因為博士們若說他們曾聽見先知宣講這些事,或說有天使私下向他們說話,或許還會被人不信;
For if the Magi had said that they had heard the prophets declaring these things, or that angels had privately conversed with them, they might have been disbelieved;
7:128
but now, with the sight of the star appearing from on high, even those who were exceedingly shameless were put to silence.
7:129
隨後,那星既停在那小孩子之上,便又站住了;
Then, when it had come to rest over the young child, the star stood still again;
7:130
which very thing was of a power greater than belongs to a star, namely, now to be hidden and now to appear, and having appeared to stand still.
7:131
From this those men too received an increase of faith.
7:132
因此他們也歡喜,因為尋見了所尋求的,因為他們已成了真理的使者,因為他們並非枉走這麼遠的路;
For this reason they also rejoiced, because they had found what they sought, because they had become messengers of the truth, because they had not come so long a way in vain;
7:133
so great a longing had they for Christ.
7:134
因為那星既來,就正停在那頭上,指明所生的乃是神聖的;
For having come, it stood over the very head, showing that the offspring is divine;
7:135
and having stood, it leads them to worship, not simply barbarians, but the wiser among them.
7:136
Do you see that with good reason the star appeared? For even after the prophecy, and after the exposition of the chief priests and scribes, they still gave heed to it.
7:137
願馬吉安蒙羞,願撒摩撒他的保羅蒙羞,他們不肯看那博士所看見的,而博士乃是教會的先驅;
Let Marcion be put to shame, let Paul of Samosata be put to shame, who would not see the things which the Magi saw, they who were forefathers of the Church;
7:138
for I am not ashamed thus to call them.
7:139
Let Marcion be put to shame, seeing God worshiped in the flesh.
7:140
seeing him worshiped not simply as a man.
7:141
然而他確是在肉身中,這有那襁褓和馬槽為證;
But that it was indeed in the flesh, the swaddling clothes and the manger show;
7:142
and that they worshiped him not as a mere man, they make plain by offering, at so untimely an age, such gifts as it was fitting to offer to God.
7:143
Let the Jews too be put to shame together with them, seeing barbarians and Magi outrunning them, and not even enduring to come after those men.
7:144
For the things then done were a type of the things to come, and from these very beginnings it was made plain that the Gentiles would outstrip that people of theirs.
7:145
'And how is it,' one asks, 'that not from the beginning, but afterward, he said:
7:146
"Go and make disciples of all the nations"? Because, as I said, what was taking place was a type of that which was to be, and a kind of foreannouncement.
7:147
因為按著自然的次序,理當是猶太人先來;
For the natural order was that the Jews should come first;
7:148
but since they willingly betrayed the benefit that belonged to them, the matter came about in the reverse order.
7:149
其實即使在此,博士也本不當在猶太人之先來到;
Since not even here ought the Magi to have come before the Jews;
7:150
從那樣遙遠之地而來的,也本不當搶先過那些就近坐在城旁的人;
nor ought those from so great a distance to have outstripped those who were seated hard by the very city;
7:151
nor ought those who had heard nothing to have outrun those nurtured amid so many prophecies.
7:152
但既然他們竟過分地不認識原屬自己的美好之事,那從波斯來的就搶先過那在耶路撒冷的人;
But since with excess they were ignorant of the good things that were their own, those from Persia outstrip those in Jerusalem;
7:153
which very thing Paul also declares, saying:
7:154
'It was necessary that the word of the Lord should first be spoken to you;'
7:155
'but since you judged yourselves unworthy, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.'
7:156
因為縱使他們在此之前沒有被說服,至少在從博士那裡聽見之後,也理當奔跑前去;
For even if they were not persuaded before this, at least, having heard from the Magi, they ought to have run;
7:157
for this reason, while those men were sleeping, these ran on ahead.
7:158
Let us then, we also, follow the Magi, and part from our barbarous custom,
7:159
並要與它拉開遙遠的距離,好叫我們得以看見基督;
and let us make a great distance from it, that we may see Christ;
7:160
since those men too, if they had not gone far from their own country, would not have seen him.
7:161
Let us withdraw from earthly affairs.
7:162
因為博士們,當他們還在波斯的時候,只看見那星;
For the Magi too, so long as they were in Persia, saw only the star;
7:163
但當他們離開了波斯,就得見那公義的日頭;
but when they had departed from Persia, they beheld the Sun of righteousness;
7:164
or rather, they would not even have seen the star, had they not eagerly risen up from thence.
7:165
縱使眾人都驚惶擾亂,我們仍要奔向那小孩子的家;
and though all be in tumult, let us run to the house of the young child;
7:166
though kings, though peoples, though tyrants cut off this road, let us not slacken our longing.
7:167
For thus shall we beat off all the terrors that press upon us.
7:168
For these men too, had they not beheld the young Child, would not have escaped the peril that came from the king.
7:169
在他們看見那嬰孩之前,恐懼、危險與紛擾從四面八方壓迫著他們;
Before they saw the young Child, fears and dangers and troubles pressed upon them from every side;
7:170
but after their worship came calm and safety.
7:171
如今接待他們的不再是星,而是天使,因為他們藉著敬拜已成了祭司;
And no longer a star, but an angel receives them, now that from their worship they had become priests;
7:172
for indeed they also offered gifts.
7:173
Do you also, therefore, leaving the Jewish people, the troubled city, the murderous tyrant, the phantom of this present life, hasten to Bethlehem, where is the house of the spiritual Bread.
7:174
For even if you are a shepherd, and come here, you shall see the young Child in an inn.
7:175
Even if you are a king, and do not draw near, your purple robe will profit you nothing.
7:176
你縱然是博士,這也絕不會攔阻你,只要你是為了尊崇和敬拜而來,不是要踐踏神的兒子;
Even if you are a wise man, this will in no way hinder you, provided only you come to honor and to worship, and not to trample under foot the Son of God;
7:177
只要你是帶著戰兢與喜樂來行這事;
provided you do this with trembling and with joy;
7:178
for these two things can indeed meet together at once.
7:179
But take heed lest you become like Herod, and say:
7:180
'That I may come and worship Him,' and then, when you are come, you should wish to slay Him.
7:181
For to this man are like those who partake of the mysteries unworthily.
7:182
For such a one shall be guilty, it says, of the body and blood of the Lord. For indeed they have within themselves the tyrant who is grieved at the kingdom of Christ, one more lawless than that Herod—namely, mammon.
7:183
For this tyrant wishes to reign, and he sends forth his own servants, who in appearance indeed do homage, but in the very act of worshiping commit murder.
7:184
Let us therefore fear lest we ever have the appearance of suppliants and worshipers, while in our deeds we display the very opposite.
7:185
And let us cast away all things from our hands, when we are about to worship.
7:186
Even if we have gold, let us offer it to Him, and not bury it in the ground.
7:187
因為那時連那些外邦人尚且為尊崇他而獻上,那麼你連對有缺乏的他也不施捨,你算是甚麼人呢?若他們走了那樣遙遠的路,只為看見他降生,那麼你連一條小巷都不肯走去探望病人和被囚的人,你還有甚麼可推諉的呢?何況病人、被囚的人,甚至我們的仇敵,我們尚且憐憫;
For if those barbarians then offered it for His honor, what shall you be, who give not even to Him that has need? If they came so long a journey that they might see Him newly born, what excuse will you have, who will not go even the length of a single lane to visit the sick and the one in bonds? And yet even the sick and those in chains, even our enemies, we pity;
7:188
yet you pity not even your own Benefactor and Master.
7:189
他們尚且獻上了金子;
And they indeed offered gold;
7:190
他們看見了星,就歡喜快樂;
They saw the star, and rejoiced;
7:191
but you, seeing Christ Himself a stranger and naked, are not moved to compassion.
7:192
For which of you, who have received ten thousand benefits, has for Christ's sake undertaken so long a journey as those barbarians made—nay rather, than those who were more philosophic than the philosophers? And why do I speak of so long a road? Many of our women are so delicate that they will not even cross a single street to see Him upon the spiritual manger, unless they can lay hold of mules.
7:193
Others, since they are able to walk, set before their coming hither—some the throng of the affairs of this life, and some the theaters.
7:194
那些外邦人尚且在未見他之先,就為他的緣故走完那樣遙遠的路;
And the barbarians, before they saw Him, accomplished so great a journey for His sake;
7:195
你卻連在看見之後也不熱心效法他們;反倒在看見之後棄他而去,跑去觀看戲子(因為我又重提先前所論的同一件事);
but you, not even after seeing, are zealous to imitate them; nay, forsaking Him after seeing, you run to see the mime (for I touch again upon the same things as before);
7:196
and beholding Christ lying in a manger, you leave Him, that you may see women upon the stage.
7:197
Of how many thunderbolts are these things not worthy?
7:198
For tell me, if someone promised to bring you into a palace, and to show you the king seated on his throne, would you then choose to see the theater instead of these things? And yet even from that there would be nothing to gain.
7:199
然而在這裡,卻有屬靈的火泉從這桌上湧流出來;
But here a spiritual fountain of fire gushes up from this table;
7:200
and you, forsaking this, run down to the theater, to see
7:201
游泳的婦女,看那本性被公然羞辱,卻撇下坐在泉旁的基督。因為就是如今他仍坐在泉旁,所交談的不是一個撒瑪利亞婦人,而是全城的人;
women swimming, and nature put to open shame, while you leave Christ sitting beside the fountain. For even now He sits beside the fountain, conversing not with a Samaritan woman, but with a whole city;
7:202
or perhaps even now with a Samaritan woman alone.
7:203
因為就是如今,也沒有人真正與他同在;
For no one is present with Him even now;
7:204
but some are present with their bodies only, and others not even with these.
7:205
然而他並不退去,反倒仍舊等候,且向我們討水喝——不是討水,乃是討聖潔;
Yet nevertheless He does not withdraw, but abides, and asks of us to drink—not water, but holiness;
7:206
for He gives the holy things to the holy.
7:207
因為他從這泉源賜給我們的並非水,乃是活血;
For neither does He supply us water from this fountain, but living blood;
7:208
and though it is a symbol of death, yet it has become the cause of life.
7:209
But you, forsaking the fountain of blood, the awesome cup, depart to a devilish fountain, to see a harlot swimming, and to suffer the shipwreck of your soul.
7:210
For that water is a sea of licentiousness, which does not make bodies to sink beneath the waves, but works the shipwreck of souls.
7:211
And while she swims with her body stripped bare, you, by looking on, are plunged down into the deep of licentiousness.
7:212
魔鬼的網羅正是如此;
For such is the devil's net;
7:213
it makes those who go not down into the water itself, but sit above, more deeply submerged than those wallowing there below, and drowns them more grievously than Pharaoh, who was then sunk together with his horses and his chariots.
7:214
And if it were possible to see souls, I could show you many floating upon these waters, even as the bodies of the Egyptians then floated.
7:215
But this is the more grievous thing, that they call such utter ruin a delight, and name this sea of destruction the channel of pleasure.
7:216
And yet one might more easily traverse the Aegean and the Tyrrhenian sea in safety than this spectacle.
7:217
For first, throughout the whole night, the devil forestalls their souls with expectation; then, having shown them the thing expected, he straightway bound them fast and made them captives.
7:218
你不要因為未曾與娼妓交合,就以為自己是脫離了罪;
For do not, because you have not consorted with the harlot, suppose yourself clean from the sin;
7:219
for by your eager desire you have accomplished the whole.
7:220
因為你若被情慾所轄制,就是點燃了更大的火焰;
For if you are held fast by desire, you have kindled the greater flame;
7:221
but if you feel nothing towards the things you see, you are worthy of the greater condemnation, becoming a stumbling block to others by your incitement to these spectacles, and putting your own sight to shame, and with your sight your soul.
7:222
But that we may not only rebuke, come, let us also devise a method of correction.
7:223
What then shall the method be? I wish to hand you over to your own women, that they may instruct you.
7:224
因為照著保羅的命令,你們本應是作教師的;
For it were fitting, according to the law of Paul, that you should be the teachers;
7:225
but since the order has been inverted through sin, and the body has come to be uppermost while the head is below, let us take even this road.
7:226
But if you are ashamed to have a woman for a teacher, flee the sin, and you will be able speedily to ascend to the throne given you by God.
7:227
因為只要你犯罪,聖經就不僅打發你到婦人那裡去,甚至打發你到比你更卑微的無知生物那裡去;
For so long as you transgress, the Scripture sends you not to a woman only, but even to creatures more lowly than you;
7:228
and it is not ashamed to send him who is honored with reason as a disciple to the ant.
7:229
For this is no reproach against the Scripture, but against those who thus betray their own nobility.
7:230
所以我們也要如此行;
This then we also will do;
7:231
如今我們固然要把你交給婦人;
and now indeed we will hand you over to the woman;
7:232
but if you despise her, we will send you also to the school of the brute creatures, and will show you how many birds, how many fishes, how many four-footed beasts and creeping things appear more dignified and more temperate than you.
7:233
But if you are ashamed at the comparison, and blush, ascend to your own proper nobility, and flee the sea of hell and the river of fire—the swimming pool that is in the theater.
7:234
For this pool procures that sea, and kindles that abyss of flame.
7:235
For if he that looks on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery,
7:236
how shall not he who is compelled even to see her naked become a captive ten thousand times over? The flood in Noah's day did not so destroy the race of men as these swimming women drown all there present with much shame.
7:237
因為那雨雖然帶來了身體的死亡,卻抑制了靈魂的邪惡;
For that rain, though it wrought the death of the body, yet checked the wickedness of the soul;
7:238
But this man does the very opposite: while the bodies remain, he destroys the soul.
7:239
然而你們,每逢談及首位之尊時,便要求主持全天下,因為我們的城邑是最先冠上「基督徒」之名的;
Yet you, whenever there is talk of precedence, claim the right to preside over the whole world, since our city was the first to bind on itself the name of Christians;
7:240
你們自命高於一切城邑,只因我們的城最先承受了基督徒的名號;
you claim to take precedence over every city, because ours was the first to take up the name of Christians;
7:241
可是在自制的競賽中,你們甚至比那些更為粗野的城邑所得的還少,難道不覺羞恥嗎?有人說:「是啊;
but in the contest of self-control, when you carry off less even than the more rustic cities, are you not ashamed? 'Yes,' he says;
7:242
那你吩咐我怎麼做呢?難道要上山去做修士嗎?」正是為此我才嘆息,因為你們以為端莊與自制只配那些人才適合;
'and what do you bid me do? To take to the mountains and become a monk?' It is for this very reason that I groan, that you suppose orderliness and self-control to befit those men alone;
7:243
and yet Christ laid down laws common to all.
7:244
因為當祂說:「凡看見婦女就動淫念的」時,並非只對獨居的修士說,也是對有妻子的人說的;
For when He says, 'If anyone looks at a woman to lust after her,' He does not speak to the solitary monk only, but also to the man who has a wife;
7:245
for indeed that mountain of His was at that time filled with people of all such conditions.
7:246
Consider, then, that theatre, and hate this diabolical one, and do not condemn the word as too severe.
7:247
因為我並不禁止嫁娶,也不阻攔你享受歡樂;
For I do not forbid marriage, nor do I hinder your taking delight;
7:248
but I wish this to be done with self-control, not with shame and accusation and countless reproaches.
7:249
I do not enjoin you to take to the mountains and the deserts, but to be kind and gentle and temperate while dwelling in the midst of the city.
7:250
因為一切律法,除婚姻一事外,都是我們與修士所共有的;
For all the laws are common to us with the monks, except marriage;
7:251
or rather, even in this Paul commands us to be made equal to them in all things, saying:
7:252
'For the fashion of this world passes away, that even those who have wives may be as though they had none.'
7:253
所以他說,我並不吩咐你去佔據群山之巔;
So then, he says, I do not bid you take the summits of the mountains;
7:254
其實我倒希望如此,因為那些城市正在效法所多瑪所行的事;
for indeed I could have wished it, because the cities imitate the things done in Sodom;
7:255
你儘管留下,擁有房屋、兒女與妻子;
Remain having a house and children and a wife;
7:256
but do not outrage your wife, nor make an example of your children, nor bring into your house the pollution that comes from the theatres.
7:257
你豈沒有聽見保羅說:「丈夫沒有權柄管自己的身子,乃在妻子」;
Do you not hear Paul saying? 'The husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife;'
7:258
又為夫妻二人立下共有的律法嗎?可是你呢,若妻子時常上教會,你便成了嚴厲的控訴者;
and laying down laws common to both? But you, if your wife frequently goes to church, become a harsh accuser;
7:259
而你自己整日消磨在劇場裡,卻不以為自己該受責備;
yet spending your own days in the theatres, you do not think yourself deserving of accusation;
7:260
論到妻子的貞潔,你竟如此苛求,甚至到了過分而無度的地步,連她必要的出門都不容許;
but concerning your wife's chastity you are so exacting as to be even excessive and immoderate, not even permitting her the necessary outings;
7:261
yet for yourself you suppose everything is permitted.
7:262
But Paul does not allow this to you, He who gives the same authority also to the wife; for indeed:
7:263
'Let the husband,' he says, 'render to the wife the honour that is due.'
7:264
那麼,這算是甚麼樣的尊重呢——當你在緊要之處凌辱她,又把她的身子交給娼妓?因為你的身子乃是她的;
What sort of honour is this, then, when in matters of moment you outrage her, and give her body over to harlots? for your body is hers;
7:265
when you bring uproars and wars into the house? when you do such things in the marketplace as, when recounted at home, shame the wife who hears, disgrace the daughter who is present, and above them shame yourself? For one must either keep silent, or behave so shamefully that even the household servants deserve to be scourged for it.
7:266
What excuse, then, will you have, tell me—you who behold with great eagerness the very things which it is not even good to mention? who set before all else those things which cannot even be recounted with decency? For the present, then, so as not to become too burdensome, I will here bring my discourse to a close.
7:267
但你們若仍執迷於同樣的事,我便要把刀磨得更利,割得更深;
But if you persist in the same things, I will make the blade sharper, and give a deeper cut;
7:268
and I will not cease until, having scattered the devil's theatre, I make the assembly of the Church pure.
7:269
For thus we shall both be delivered from the present shame, and shall reap the life to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and dominion, unto the ages of ages. Amen.
