4:1
The first of these, then, was Plutarch, mentioned a little before; as he was being led away to death, he of whom our account speaks, being present with him to the last end of his life, was once more all but slain by Plutarch's own fellow-citizens, as having shown himself the cause of his death; but the counsel of God preserved him then also.
4:2
And after Plutarch, the second of Origen's pupils to be shown forth as a martyr was Serenus, who through fire gave proof of the faith he had received.
4:3
From the same school the third was established as a martyr, Heraclides, and after him the fourth, Hero; the former still a catechumen, the latter newly enlightened, both beheaded. Still further, besides these, from the same school a fifth champion of piety was proclaimed, another Serenus, different from the first, who, it is recorded, after very great endurance of tortures was punished by the cutting off of his head. And of the women, Herais, while still a catechumen for baptism, as he himself somewhere says, 「received the baptism by fire」 and so departed this life.
