20:1
Haec c et alia, et sacerdos nosse debet, ut doceat, et populus credere, ut d quæ doceatur intelligat; e dicente Apostolo: Nisi credideritis, non intelligetis (Isai. VII, 9, juxia LXX). Unde datur intellgi quod non fides ex intellectu, sed ex fide intellectus existal; f nec qui intelligit credat, sed qui credit intelligat, et qui intellexerit, bene agat; sicut alihi scriptum est: Noluit intelligere, ut bene ageret (Psal. XXXV, 4). Non dixit: Non potuit, sed noluit intelligere; ut nihil aliud nolle intelligere dictum, quam nolle creaere noverimus; ac per hoc ut bene agat quis, intelligere studeat, et ut intelligat, credat. Sed quia idem Apostolus dicit: Fides ex auditu;
These and other things both the priest ought to know in order to teach, and the people to believe in order that they may understand what they are taught; as the Apostle says: Unless you believe, you shall not understand (Isa. 7:9, according to the Septuagint). Whence it is given to understand that understanding does not arise from faith out of intellect, but intellect out of faith; nor does he who understands believe, but he who believes understands, and he who has understood acts well; as it is written elsewhere: He would not understand, that he might act well (Ps. 35:4). It did not say: He could not, but he would not understand; so that we may recognize that to be unwilling to understand is nothing other than to be unwilling to believe; and therefore, that one may act well, let him strive to understand, and that he may understand, let him believe. But since the same Apostle says: Faith comes by hearing;
這些以及別的事,祭司當知道,好去教導;百姓當相信,好叫他們明白所受的教導;正如使徒所說:你們若不信,就不能明白(賽七9,按七十士譯本)。由此可知,明白並非由理智從信德而生,乃是理智從信德而出;也非明白的人才相信,乃是相信的人才明白,而明白了的人就行得善;正如別處所記:他不肯明白,以致他不行善(詩三十五4)。經上沒有說:他不能,乃說:他不肯明白;好叫我們認識,不肯明白無非就是不肯相信;因此,人要行得善,就當竭力去明白,要明白,就當相信。但既然這同一位使徒說:信道是從聽道來的;
20:2
auditus autem s per verbum Dei (Rom. x, 17), debetdocior Ecclesiæ prædicare, quod audiat crediturus: quia sine prædicatione nullus erit auditus; eodem Apostolo h attestante atque dicente; Quomodo audient sine prædicante (Ibid., 14)? Si ergo quilibet sine praedicante non audit, sine auditu non credit, sine fide non intelligit, sine intellectu bene non agit; verbum i fidei prædicandum est, i ut audit ns credat, credens intelligat, et intelligens bonum opus perseveranter exerceat: quoniam k cum qui potest uti liberæ voluntatis arbitrio, nec opera sine fide, nec sine operibus fides sola justificat. Et ideo si corde creditur ad justitiam. ore autem confessio fit ad salutem;
and hearing comes through the word of God (Rom. 10:17), the teacher of the Church ought to preach what the one about to believe may hear: for without preaching there will be no hearing; the same Apostle attesting and saying: How shall they hear without a preacher (ibid., 14)? If, therefore, anyone without a preacher does not hear, without hearing does not believe, without faith does not understand, without understanding does not act well; the word of faith must be preached, that hearing he may believe, believing understand, and understanding persevere in good work: for, since one who is able to use the choice of free will, neither works without faith nor faith alone without works justifies. And therefore, if with the heart one believes unto righteousness, but with the mouth confession is made unto salvation;
而聽道是藉著神的話來的(羅十17),教會的教師就當宣講那將要相信的人所能聽見的:因為沒有宣講,就沒有聽見;這同一位使徒見證說:沒有傳道的,怎能聽見呢(同處14)?所以,人若沒有傳道的就不能聽見,沒有聽見就不能相信,沒有信德就不能明白,沒有明白就不能行善;故此信德之道必須被宣講,好叫人聽見就相信,相信就明白,明白就恆久地行善工:因為對能運用自由意志之抉擇的人而言,沒有信德的行為固然不能稱義,單有信德而無行為也不能稱義。所以人若心裏相信就可以稱義,口裏承認就可以得救;
20:3
i qui non crediderit, non habendo fidem, necjustitiam cordis habere poterit, nec salutein.
he who will not have believed, not having faith, can have neither the righteousness of the heart nor salvation.
那不肯相信的人,既沒有信德,就既不能有心裏的義,也不能有救恩。
