30:1
1. Sed jam divina testimonia, sicut promisimus, proferamus. In Act. apostolorum Paulus apostolus sacerdotibus dicit: Ecce ego scio quod amplius non videbitis faciem meam, vos omnes, inter quos ambulavi prædicans k regnum Jesu Christi.
1. But now let us bring forward the divine testimonies, as we promised. In the Acts of the Apostles the apostle Paul says to the priests: Behold, I know that you all, among whom I have walked preaching the kingdom of Jesus Christ, shall see my face no more. Therefore I testify to you this day that I am clean from the blood of all. For I have not shrunk from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. Take heed to yourselves and to the whole flock, in which the Holy Spirit has placed you as bishops to rule the Church of God, which He purchased with His own blood (Acts xx, 25 ff.). The kingdom of God, he says, I have preached while walking among you, that I might keep myself free from the perdition of all who, having heard the word of saving doctrine, are nonetheless not advanced toward salvation.
He preaches the kingdom of God who does not cease to preach of the future life which has no end; of the divine contemplation which has no wearisome satiety; of the blessedness of the saints which has no failing; of the likeness to the angels to be attained: so that, if those who hear are unwilling to be roused toward these ineffable goods, he is absolved who did not keep silent in preaching to them. And what he adds following—For I have not shrunk from declaring to you the whole counsel of God (Ibid., 27)—what else does it give us to understand, except that the ecclesiastical teacher should disclose to those whom he teaches the dispensation of God (which the Apostle calls the counsel of God)?
30:3
Aperit ergo dispositionis divinæ consilium quando docet ut petres pietatem filiis suis impendeodo, eam mereantur a Domino, qui est omnium Pater, 0 ut filii honorem debitum P patribus suis exhibeant, non ex hæreditionis metu deterriti, sed fulturae remunerationis desiderio provocati: quia praeceptum q Domini tam patres filios diligendo, quam filii honorificentiam suis exhibendo patribus complent, qui utrumque jussit ut fierei; r 4ocet ut mariti fidem conjugalis thori suis uxoribus servent; s ut uxores maritos suos non studio formae lenocinantis adhibito, aut accuratione vestium diversarum, sed gravitate morum delectent, et operum sanctitate;
He therefore opens the counsel of the divine dispensation when he teaches that fathers, by showing piety to their sons, should merit it from the Lord, who is the Father of all; that sons should render due honor to their fathers, not deterred by fear of disinheritance, but provoked by desire of the reward to come: because the precept of the Lord both fathers fulfill by loving their sons, and sons by showing honor to their fathers, He having commanded that both be done; he teaches that husbands keep to their wives the fidelity of the conjugal bed; that wives delight their husbands not by employing the zeal of an alluring beauty, or by the careful choice of various garments, but by gravity of manners and holiness of works;
因此,當他教導為父的當以慈愛待自己的兒女,好從那是萬人之父的主那裡得著慈愛;又教導為子的當對父親盡當盡的孝敬,不是因懼怕被剝奪繼承而退縮,而是因渴慕將來的賞賜而受激勵時,他就開啟了神聖安排的旨意:因為主的訓誡,父親藉愛兒女得以成全,兒女也藉孝敬父親得以成全,乃因主吩咐二者都當實行;他教導丈夫當向妻子持守婚床的忠貞;教導妻子當以端莊的品行與聖潔的行為,而非以勾引的妖艷之姿、或精心揀選的各樣華服,來使丈夫喜悅;
30:4
3. His u et talibus et sacerdos annuntiat prædicando, et obediendo populus accipit Dei consilium, sine quo non pervenitur ad regnum; in quo a solo exsecutores divini consilii, participes, Deo auctore, futuri sunt cœlestium præmiorum.
that masters should treat their servants mercifully as their fellow-servants in Christ, and that servants should so serve their masters from the heart that they fulfill the will not only of their masters but also of God, who commands this very thing; that among themselves citizens with citizens, friends with friends, parents with parents should keep true concord; that in no business one should deceive another by cunning fraud, nor in a common contract should anyone himself corrupt the good faith which he wishes to be kept toward himself. 3. These things and the like the priest announces by preaching, and the people, by obeying, receives the counsel of God, without which one does not arrive at the kingdom; in which the doers of the divine counsel alone are, by God's authorship, to be the partakers of the heavenly rewards.
30:5
Deinde quod dicit Apostolus: Attendite vobis et universo gregi in quo vos Spiritus sanctus posuit episcopos regere Ecclesiam Dei, quam b acquisivit sanguine suo (Acl. xx, 28): quis non videat quod tunc sibi sacerdotes attendunt, quando sancte vivendo, ac voluntatem c Domini fiducialiter praedicando, Ecclesiae Dei prospiciunt, ut eis jam grave non sit inlirmos Ecclesiae sustinere, pro quibus redimendis se dignatus est morti vitae auctor offerre? Sed et ipsi qui docentur, ut sapiant; qui increpantur, ut saltern objurgati proficiant;
Then, as to what the Apostle says: Take heed to yourselves and to the whole flock, in which the Holy Spirit has placed you as bishops to rule the Church of God, which He purchased with His own blood (Acts xx, 28)—who does not see that priests then take heed to themselves, when by living holily and faithfully preaching the will of the Lord they look out for the Church of God, so that it is no longer grievous to them to bear with the weak of the Church, for whose redemption the Author of life deigned to offer Himself to death? But also those who are taught, that they may grow wise; those who are rebuked, that they may at least, when chided, make progress;
其次,論到使徒所說的:「聖靈立你們作監督,要治理神的教會,就是祂用自己血所買來的,你們當為自己謹慎,也為全群謹慎」(徒二十28)——誰不看見:祭司唯有在聖潔地生活、忠信地傳揚主的旨意、為神的教會謀益時,才算為自己謹慎,以致他們不再以承擔教會中軟弱的人為難——生命的創始者尚且甘願為救贖這些人捨己受死?而且那些受教導的人,也當好叫自己得著智慧;那些受責備的人,也當好叫自己至少在受責時有所長進;
30:6
I, 3,17).- 4.
those who are borne with, that they may at some time blush for their own crimes, and may show joy to their teachers, by whose patience they are gently treated, from the profit of their own correction; let these too, I say, gladly hear what the divine word, through the apostolic mouth, enjoins upon them: Obey, it says, your superiors and be subject to them. For they themselves keep watch, as those who must render an account for your souls: that they may do this with joy and not groaning; for this is profitable for you (Heb. xiii, 17). 4. Therefore those who hear ought to obey their teachers, and to be subject to them with reverence. This those do who gladly receive correction, and do not contradict those who rebuke them. But as to what he says:
30:7
lpsi enim pervigilant, quasi rationem reddituri pro animabus vestris (Ibid.); sacerdotalem curam pro populo sibi commisso satis ostendit, qui tam in suis actibus quam in praedicationibus vigilantes, sollicite hostis antiqui rimantur insidias, ne quem, velut dormiente pastore, lupus 6 diabolus astuta fraude subripiat, et in damnum pastoris abreptum, secum usque ad supplicia sempiterna perducat. Verum quia ex his qui arguuntur, aliqui se obedientes emendant, aliqui in sua perversitate perdurant, ideo de sacerdotibus ait: Ut cum gaudio hoc faciant et non gementes (Ibid.). Cum gaudio sacerdotes h arguunt, quando correpti proficiunt;
For they themselves keep watch, as those who must render an account for your souls (Ibid.)—he sufficiently shows the priestly care for the people committed to them, who, being vigilant both in their own deeds and in their preachings, anxiously search out the snares of the ancient enemy, lest, as though while the shepherd sleeps, the wolf—the devil—snatch away anyone by his cunning fraud, and, having carried off the one snatched to the shepherd's loss, lead him along with himself even to everlasting torments. But since, of those who are reproved, some amend themselves obediently, while others persist in their perversity, therefore he says of the priests: That they may do this with joy and not groaning (Ibid.). The priests reprove with joy, when those corrected make progress;
「他們為你們的靈魂時刻警醒,好像將來交賬的人」(同上)——他充分顯明了祭司對所託付給他們之百姓的關懷,這些祭司無論在自己的行為或傳講上都儆醒,殷切地搜查那古蛇仇敵的詭計,免得仿佛在牧人睡覺時,那狼——就是魔鬼——用狡猾的詭詐攫去某人,並把所擄的、使牧人受損之人,一同帶走,直至永遠的刑罰。但因在受責備的人中,有的順服地改正自己,有的卻在悖逆中執迷不悟,所以他論到祭司說:「叫他們作這事有快樂,不至憂愁」(同上)。當受改正者有長進時,祭司就歡喜地責備;
30:8
and they do this sadly when they groan that they make no progress in those who despise them; and so he says this is profitable for them—that, with joy and not groaning, the priests should rebuke those who gladden their teachers by their own correction, and heap up their teachers' joys by the increase of their own advancement.
