27:1
i. Superiori libro racionem contemplativæ vitæ a complexus, pro viribus quas Dominus donare dignabitur, de actuali vita, sicut promisit disputare constitui. Quapropter b sicut in praefatione primi voluminis feci, hic quoque officii mei c necessitatem paucis aperio: quia si potuissem sine obedientiæ noxa quod jubebatis abnuere, nunquam me proprice voluntatis instinctu committerem obtrectatorum malevolo d dente carpendum; qui nolentes advertere quam invitus hæc scribenda susceperim, totum quod est vestræ jussionis, applicaturi sunt e forte vitio vanitatis:
Having in the preceding book comprised the consideration of the contemplative life, I have resolved, according to the powers which the Lord shall deign to grant, to discourse, as I promised, concerning the active life. Wherefore, just as I did in the preface of the first volume, here too I disclose in a few words the necessity of my office: for if I had been able, without the harm of disobedience, to refuse what you commanded, I would never of my own will's prompting commit myself to be torn by the malevolent tooth of detractors; who, unwilling to notice how unwillingly I undertook these things to be written, will perhaps ascribe the whole of what belongs to your command to the vice of vanity:
27:2
maxime si de rebus talibus locuturus, quibus ecclesiasticorum pene omnium conversatio tenenda describitur, aliquid tale posuero, quod sæculariter viventium mentes offendat; et f dum in descriptione ecclesiasticæ vitæ mores suos (quos # nesciri magis quam emendari volunt) viderint publicari; in me tanquam suorum actuum proditorem, carnatiter commoti desæviant, atque ea quæ fuerint, donante Deo, prolata, etsi rationabiliter dicta dijudicent, a me tamen dici non debuisse contendant; sicque aut materiam disputationis, aut personam disputantis irrideant. Sed quoniam sana mens incomparabiliter amplius obedientiæ fructum debet appetere quam vitare injustæ obtreclationis opprobrium;
especially if, when about to speak of such matters by which the conduct to be maintained by almost all churchmen is described, I should set down something of such a kind as offends the minds of those who live in a worldly way; and while in the description of the ecclesiastical life they see their own morals (which they wish rather to be unknown than to be amended) made public, they, carnally provoked, may rage against me as a betrayer of their own deeds, and—even if they judge that things which have been brought forth, by God's gift, were reasonably said—may nevertheless contend that they ought not to have been said by me; and thus may mock either the matter of the disputation or the person of the disputant. But since a sound mind ought incomparably more to seek the fruit of obedience than to avoid the reproach of unjust detraction;
尤其當我將要論及這樣的事——其中所描述的乃是幾乎所有教會中人當持守的品行——若我寫下某種冒犯那些屬世生活之人心思的話;並當他們在這對教會生活的描述中,看見自己的品行(這些品行他們寧願被人不知,而非被改正)被公開時,他們便屬肉體地受激動,向我發怒,如同向出賣他們行為的人;並且——縱然他們判斷那些蒙神恩典所陳明的事乃是合理所說的——仍要力辯這些話不該由我說出;於是嘲笑那辯論的題材,或那辯論者的人身。但既然健全的心思應當無可比擬地更去尋求順從的果子,過於躲避不義誹謗的羞辱;
27:3
h levius credidi me gravari reprehendentium dicta mea judicio, quam pertinacis inobedientiae subjacere periculo. Proinde securus, quod vos mihi perficiendi facultatem precibus impetretis a Domino, qui jussistis ut loquerer, et præsumptionem meam apud eos qui me judicaturi sunt, excusetis; opus susceptum i vobis orantibus adjuvandus expediam. 2. Sed priusquam membratim singula quæ proposuistis absolvam, universaliter de ipsa re quæ in hoc libello tractanda est pauca mihi video esse dicenda: quibus evidenter appareat qua ratione mihi succenseri posse præfatus sim, ab eis qui magis quis dicat, quam quid dicat attendunt;
I have considered it a lighter thing to be burdened by the judgment of those reproving my words than to lie under the peril of obstinate disobedience. Therefore, secure that you will obtain for me by your prayers from the Lord—who commanded that I should speak—the ability to complete it, and that you will excuse my presumption before those who are to judge me; I shall, aided by your prayers, dispatch the work undertaken. But before I resolve one by one the several things you proposed, I see that a few things must be said by me universally concerning the very matter to be treated in this little book: by which it may evidently appear for what reason I said above that I could be resented by those who attend more to who is speaking than to what is said;
我便認定,被那些責備我言語之人的論斷所累,乃是較輕的事,過於陷在頑梗不順從的危險之下。所以,我既確信你們必藉禱告為我從主——就是那吩咐我說話的主——求得完成此工的能力,並在那些要審斷我的人面前為我的冒昧開脫;我就要靠你們的禱告為助,著手完成所承擔的工作。但在我逐一解明你們所提的各項之先,我看自己必須先就這本小書所要論述的事項,普遍地說幾句話:好叫人明白顯出,我上文所說我可能招致不悅,乃是出於何故——這不悅是出於那些只看誰在說、不看所說為何之人;
27:4
nec rationem dictorum, sed dignitatem dicentium i prava examinatione discutiunt; et quod facere aut fieri nolunt, dici quoque 1 sibi fastidiunt; paratiores aliquid doctrinæ, etiam quod scire cupiunt ignorare; quam a persona inferiore eognoscere: cum veritas undecunque claruerit, non sit ingenio humano deputanda, sed Deo; nec aliquorum debeat credi, sed omnium, quæ per se m tanta et talis est, ut non tunc sit magna, si eam magni docuerint; sed potius ipsa magnos faciat eos, a quibus doceri vel n disci po. tuerit. Voluistis itaque vobis proprietatem vitæ actualis exponi, ut vos cum vestris secundum ipsam vixisse semper, et vivere probaretis;
With a perverse judgment they weigh not the substance of what is said but the rank of those who say it; and what they themselves are unwilling to do or to have done, they also disdain to have spoken to them. They are more ready to remain ignorant even of a teaching they desire to know than to learn it from a person of lower standing—whereas, when truth shines forth from whatever source, it must be ascribed not to human talent but to God, nor must it be credited to certain persons only, but to all; for of itself it is so great and of such a kind that it does not become great because great men have taught it, but rather it itself makes great those by whom it could be taught or learned. You wished, therefore, that the proper nature of the active life be expounded to you, so that you might prove that you, together with your own, have always lived according to it and still live so;
他們以悖謬的判斷衡量的,不是所言之事的內容,而是說話者的地位;凡他們自己不願做、不願見人做的事,他們也不屑聽人對他們說。他們寧可對自己渴望知道的教導也一無所知,也不願從地位較低的人那裡學習——其實當真理無論從何處顯明時,就不該歸於人的才智,而當歸於神;也不該只信賴某些人,而當信賴眾人所共有的真理;因為真理本身如此偉大、如此卓越,並非因偉人教導它才成為偉大,反倒是它自己使那些藉它而得以施教或受教的人成為偉大。因此你們願意我為你們闡明積極生活(actual life)的本質,好叫你們證明你們連同你們的人始終按此而活、如今也如此活著;
27:5
non qualiter vobis esset vivendum 0 meis disputationibus disceretis. Siquidem converaatio religiosa actualis est vita, quæ docet quomodo præpositi sub se regant viventes et diligant; ac non minus de eorum, quam de sua salute solliciti, quod eis expedire sciunt, paterna cura provideant: et qualiter præposito suo subjecti, tanquam capiti membra deserviant, ac præcepta ejus velut imperium Dei summo amore custodiant; hoc esse sanctum, hoc sibi salubre et necessarium judicantes, quod rectori suo placuerit; non quod eis in perniciem sui arrogantia mentis vitiosæ dictaverit. Ideoque obedientice ac patientiae virtute fundati, majorum suorum non discuciunt constituta, sed faciunt;
not that you might learn from my discussions how you ought to live. For the religious manner of life is the active life, which teaches how superiors should govern and love those living under them; and, no less solicitous for their salvation than for their own, should provide with fatherly care what they know to be profitable for them; and how those who are subject to their superior should serve him as members serve the head, and should keep his precepts, as though they were the command of God, with the highest love—judging that to be holy, that to be wholesome and necessary for themselves, which has pleased their ruler, and not what the arrogance of a vicious mind has dictated to their own ruin. And therefore, grounded in the virtue of obedience and patience, they do not scrutinize the decrees of their elders, but carry them out;
並非要叫你們從我的論述中學習你們當如何生活。因為敬虔的生活方式就是積極的生活,它教導長上當如何治理並愛護在他們之下生活的人;他們對下屬的得救,不亞於對自己的得救那樣關切,當以慈父般的關懷供給他們所知對他們有益之事;也教導那些順服長上的人當如何服事長上,正如肢體服事頭一樣,並當以至高的愛遵守長上的訓誡,如同遵守神的命令——他們判定凡使其治理者喜悅的,乃是聖潔的、對自己有益且必要的,而非那出於敗壞心思之傲慢、為自己招致毀滅所發的命令。因此他們既以順服與忍耐之德為根基,就不挑剔長上的規定,而是去執行;
27:6
Quæsistis igitur utrum æquanimiter sustinendi sint divina præcepta calcantes, an pro modo peccati debeant ecclesiastica severitate coargui. CAPUT I. Quod pro diversitate peccantium, alii portandi sunt, alii castigandi. CAP. II.
and when the rigor of discipline demands that they be sternly rebuked, they bear the correction they receive with magnanimity; and they ascribe their being chastised not to the moods of those by whom they were reproved, but to their own negligences. The course of this little book will also set forth how priests ought to treat and govern their fellow citizens—both common folk and noble, rich and powerful. These things I, as I have already often said, would not dare to write, had I been able to refuse you anything. But now let us set down the very chapters to be discussed. You have asked, then, whether those who trample upon the divine precepts are to be borne with equanimity, or whether, according to the measure of their sin, they ought to be rebuked with ecclesiastical severity. CHAPTER I. That according to the diversity of sinners, some are to be borne and others chastised. CHAP. II.
27:7
