85:1
i. Porro illac virtutes quatuor de quibus pauca perstrinxi, 0 et si ibi eiunt, longe tamen alio modo quam in hac vita sunt, ubi contra vitia sine intermissione confligunt, et pro ipso ancipiti dubiæ P concertationis eventu, modo negligentes, qui sibi nolunt obedire. destituunt; modo ad alios, quibus dispicent SIM peccata, vel accedunt, q Deo miserante, vel redeunt. Nam ibi etsi erit temperantia, non ut desidiria mala vel vitia refrenet r aut vincat; scd ut cos, quos hic ab intemperantiæ impugnatione dcfendit, ibi perficiat: ut ex omni parte perfectis præmii sui beata t perceptio perfecte sufficiat. 2. u Ibi crit et animi fortitudo;
1. Furthermore, those four virtues which I have touched on briefly—even if they exist there too, yet they exist in a far different manner than in this life, where they fight without ceasing against the vices, and, on account of the uncertain outcome of the doubtful struggle, sometimes abandon the negligent who refuse to obey them, sometimes either approach others whose sins they despise, by God's mercy, or return to them. For though temperance will be there, it will not be to restrain or conquer evil desires or vices; but to perfect those whom here it defended from the assault of intemperance, so that the blessed enjoyment of their reward may perfectly suffice for those who are perfect on every side. 2. There too will be fortitude of soul;
一、再者,我所略略提及的那四種美德——縱然在那裡也存在,卻是以與此生大不相同的方式存在;在此生中它們不停地與諸惡相爭,又因這可疑爭戰的勝負難料,有時離棄那些不肯順從、漠不關心的人;有時則藉上帝的憐憫,要麼親近那些他們所鄙視其罪的人,要麼回到他們那裡。因為在那裡縱然有節制,卻不是為要約束或勝過邪惡的欲望或惡習;而是為要成全那些在此世它曾從放縱的攻擊中所護衛的人,好叫其賞賜的蒙福享受能完全地滿足那些各方面都全備之人。二、在那裡也將有心靈的剛毅;
85:2
not to repel any evils, or to bear them with equanimity, but to keep the blessed bravely in the eternal good, free from all evils. There, in all who are perfect, will be perfect justice, not to discern between virtues and vices—where the bodies themselves will no longer be vicious—but to bestow eternal rewards on the perfect. This will come to pass when, all carnal concupiscence having been consumed, neither will the spirit lust against the flesh, nor the flesh against the spirit (Gal. 5:17); but the soul, made subject to God, with the flesh subject to itself, shall reign in everlasting peace, and shall cleave to its Creator happily forever.
85:3
Jam prudentia, quæ hic quoque habetur clara, ubi in ænigmate quodam prudentes illuminat, qualis ibi erit, ubi x veritatem perfectis quos hc cjus inquisitio delectabat, sinc ullis figuris fallentibus demonstrabit: ut prudentiæ ar. vpientiæ plenaria y perceptione divinitus illustrati, omnia illa quæ hic perfecle cupiebant nosse, nec poterant, sine ullo impedimento corruptionis ac mortalitatis agnescant; et non solum creaturarum omnium 7 rationes, sed etiam ipsam sui Creatoris eminentiam facie revelata conspiciant?
And prudence, which here too is held to be clear—where it enlightens the prudent in a kind of enigma—what will it be like there, where it will display the truth to the perfect (whom here its inquiry delighted) without any deceiving figures? So that, divinely illumined by the full perception of prudence and wisdom, they may recognize, without any hindrance of corruption and mortality, all those things which here they perfectly desired to know yet could not; and may behold with unveiled face not only the reasons of all creatures, but also the very eminence of their Creator?
