Hactenus de virtute cui nomen est fortitudo a disputavimus. Videamus jam quid b etiam justitia nobis afferat in hac vita praesidii, et qualiter ipsa quoque in eorum pectoribus qui se illi c tradiderint, nullis vitiorum valeat impugnationibus superari. Fides enim, quæ est justitiæ fundamentum, quam nulla bona opera præcedunt d, et ex qua omnia bona procedunt, ipsa nos a peccatis omnibus purgat, mentes nostras illuminat, Deo c conciliat, et cunctis participibus naturæ nostrae consociat; spem nobis futuræ remunerationis inspiral, auget in nobis virtutes sanctas, ac nos in earum possessione confirmat.
Thus far we have disputed concerning the virtue whose name is fortitude. Let us now see what aid justice also brings us in this life, and how it too, in the hearts of those who have given themselves to it, can be overcome by no assaults of the vices. For faith, which is the foundation of justice, which no good works precede, and from which all good things proceed, itself purges us from all sins, enlightens our minds, reconciles us to God, and associates us with all sharers of our nature; inspires in us the hope of future recompense, increases in us the holy virtues, and confirms us in their possession.
