21:1
i. Quod vero dicit Apostolus (I Petr. v, 3), ut nos formam debeamus exhibere fidelibus, quid valebit, si is cui vel exhortandi bonos, vel castigandi malos cura commissa est, bene vivendo se imitandum bonis exhibeat, et malos tacendo non corrigat? Ad hoc enim, nisi me fallit opinio, sancte vivendum est sacerdoti, ne dicta sua repugnantibus factis evacuet: si quod prædicat fieri debere non faciat, aut si quod non facit praedicare præsumpserit. n Si autem aliter egerit, nihil apud eos qui ejus vitam novere, proficit;
But as for what the Apostle says (I Pet. 5:3), that we ought to present a pattern to the faithful, what will it avail if he to whom the care of exhorting the good or chastising the wicked has been committed shows himself worthy of imitation to the good by living well, yet does not correct the wicked by keeping silent? For to this end, unless my opinion deceives me, a priest must live holily: lest he nullify his own words by contrary deeds—if he does not do what he preaches ought to be done, or if he presumes to preach what he does not do. But if he acts otherwise, he profits nothing among those who know his life;
至於使徒所說(彼前五3),我們當為信徒作榜樣,這有何益處,若那受託去勸勉善人或責備惡人的人,雖藉著行得善而向善人顯為可效法的榜樣,卻因緘默而不糾正惡人呢?因為,若非我的看法有誤,祭司之所以必須過聖潔的生活,正是免得他以相反的行為使自己的言語歸於無有——即他若不行他所宣講當行的,或他若擅自宣講他自己所不行的。但他若行事相反,在那些認識他生活的人中間就毫無益處;
21:2
quia ad hoc est Ecclesiae Dei præpositus, ut non solum bene vivendo, alios exemplo suae conversationis instituat, sed etiam fiducialiter prædicando, o singalis ante oculos peccata sua constituat: quae poena maneat duros, quae gloria obedientes ostendat; P nullius salutem desperando cor.temnat; animas emendari nolentium plangat, imitatus Apostolum, qui ait: Ut lugeam multos ex his qui ante peccaverunt, et non egerunt pœnitentiam (1 Cor. XII, 21); et iterum: Quis infirmatur, et ego non infirmor? Quis scandalizatur, et ego non uror (II Cor. XI, 29) ? 2. Quapropter sciens quod si quibuslihet divitibus ac potentibus q parcat, male viventibus autem faveat. eos perdat simul et r pereat;
for to this end he is set over the Church of God: that he may not only instruct others by the example of his own manner of life through living well, but also, by preaching with confidence, set their sins before each one's eyes—showing what punishment awaits the hardened, what glory awaits the obedient; despairing of no one's salvation, may he not contemn it; let him lament over the souls of those who refuse to amend, imitating the Apostle, who says: That I may mourn for many of those who sinned before and did not do penance (II Cor. 12:21); and again: Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn (II Cor. 11:29)? Wherefore, knowing that if he spares any rich or powerful persons and favors those who live wickedly, he both ruins them and perishes himself;
因為他被立在神的教會之上,正是為此:他不僅當藉著行得善,以自己生活的榜樣教導別人,更當憑信心放膽宣講,將各人的罪擺在他眼前——顯明何等的刑罰等候那剛硬的,何等的榮耀等候那順從的;對任何人的救恩都不絕望、不輕看;當為那不肯悔改之人的魂哀哭,效法那說這話的使徒:叫我為許多從前犯罪、不肯悔改的人憂愁(林後十二21);又說:有誰軟弱,我不軟弱呢?有誰跌倒,我不焦急呢(林後十一29)?因此,他既知道自己若寬容任何富足有權勢的人,又偏待那些行惡的人,就連他們一同毀滅,自己也要滅亡;
21:3
he ought both to live holily for the sake of example, and to teach for the sake of the office of his administration: certain that his own righteousness will avail him nothing, from whose hand the soul of the one perishing is required. For whenever any other person perishes, upon whom no necessity of teaching rests, he alone will pay the penalty of his own crime; but that man to whom the dispensation of the word has been committed, even if he lives holily and yet either is ashamed or afraid to reprove those who live in ruin, perishes together with all who perish while he keeps silent. And what will it profit him not to be punished for his own sin, who must be punished for another's? Let me be proved a liar, unless the Lord speaks this through the prophet Ezekiel under a kind of terrifying warning, saying to him:
21:4
Et tu fili hominis, speculatorem dedi te domui Israel (Ezech,. XXXIII, 7). Nec hoc transeunter debemus audire, quod sacerdotem speculatorem appellat: utsicut speculatoris est, de loco editiori prospicere, et plus omnibus contemplari; ita sacerdos debet esse apropositi sublimitate celsior cunctis, ac majoris scientiæ propositi habere gratiam, qua possit sub se viventes instruere. 3. Videamus jam quid divinus sermo bcontineat. Audiens, inquit, ex ore meo sermonem, annuntiabis eis ex me (Ibid.); ut hoc dicat sacerdos, quod ex divina lectione didicerit, quod illi Deus inspiraverit, non qued c praesumptione humani sensus invenerit. Annunitiabis eis, inquit, ex me. Ex me;
And you, son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel (Ezek. 33:7). Nor ought we to hear this in passing, that he calls the priest a watchman: so that, just as it belongs to a watchman to look out from a higher place and to behold more than all others, so a priest ought to be loftier than all by the sublimity of his office, and to have the grace of greater knowledge appointed to him, by which he may be able to instruct those living under him. Let us now see what the divine word contains. Hearing, he says, the word from my mouth, you shall announce it to them from me (ibid.); so that the priest may speak what he has learned from the divine reading, what God has inspired in him, not what he has discovered by the presumption of human sense. You shall announce it to them, he says, from me. From me;
人子啊,我立你作以色列家守望的人(結三十三7)。我們也不可輕忽地聽過這話——祂稱祭司為守望的人:好叫祭司正如守望的人,從高處眺望,比眾人看得更遠;照樣,祭司也當因職分的崇高而高於眾人,並蒙賜更大知識的恩典,使他能教導在他之下生活的人。如今讓我們看那神聖的話語含有甚麼。祂說:你要聽我口中的話,替我警戒他們(同處);好叫祭司講說他從神聖的閱讀所學的、神所默示他的,而非他憑人意的自負所臆造的。祂說:替我警戒他們。替我;
21:5
a non ex te mea verba loqueris. Non est e quod ex cis, lanquam de tuis infleris. Ex ine, inquit, eis annuntia. Sed jam quid annuntiet audiamus: Si me dicente ad impium: Impie, morle morieris; f non fueris locutus, ut custodiaot se impius a via sua, ipse impius in iniquitate sua morietursanguinem vero ejus de manu tua requiram (Ibid., 8). Quid potuit expressius, R qud apertius potest dici ? Si impio, inquit, locutus non fueris, ut ab impietate sua se custodiat, b et ille perierit, sanguinem ejus de manu tua requiram. Hoc est dicere: Si ei peccata sua non annuntiaveris, si cum non argueris, ut ab impietate sua convertatur et vivat;
you do not speak my words from yourself. There is no reason for you to be puffed up over them as though they were your own. From me, he says, announce to them. But now let us hear what he is to announce: If, when I say to the wicked man, 'O wicked one, you shall surely die,' you do not speak so that the wicked man may guard himself from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand (ibid., 8). What could be said more expressly, what more plainly? If you do not speak to the wicked man, he says, that he may guard himself from his wickedness, and he perishes, his blood I will require at your hand. This is to say: If you do not announce to him his sins, if you do not reprove him so that he may turn from his wickedness and live;
你不可冒充自己說出我的話。你沒有理由因這些話自高自大,彷彿是出於你自己的。祂說:替我警戒他們。如今讓我們聽祂所要警戒的是甚麼:我若指著惡人說,惡人哪,你必要死;你若不說話警戒他,使他離開所行的道,這惡人必死在他的罪孽中,我卻要向你討他喪命的罪(同處8)。還有甚麼能說得更明確、更清楚呢?祂說:你若不警戒惡人,使他離開他的惡行,他若死亡,我要向你討他喪命的罪。這就是說:你若不把他的罪指明給他,若不責備他,使他離開惡行轉回得活;
21:6
both you, who did not rebuke, and he himself, who sinned while you kept silent, I will destroy with everlasting flames. Who, I ask, will be of so stony a breast, who so made of iron, whom this sentence does not terrify? Who so estranged from faith that he does not believe this sentence?
